Streszczenie:
With the advent of quantum computers, there has been a growing interest in the practicality of this device. Due to the delicate conditions that surround physical qubits, one could wonder whether any useful computation could be implemented on such devices. As we describe in this work, it is possible to exploit concepts from classical information theory and employ quantum error-correcting techniques. Thanks to the Threshold Theorem, if the error probability of physical qubits is below a given threshold, then the logical error probability corresponding to the encoded data qubit can be arbitrarily low. To this end, we describe decoherence which is the phenomenon that quantum bits are subject to and is the main source of errors in quantum memories. From the cause of error of a single qubit, we then introduce the error models that can be used to analyze quantum error-correcting codes as a whole. The main type of code that we studied comes from the family of topological codes and is called surface code. Of these codes, we consider both the toric and planar structures. We then introduce a variation of the standard planar surface code which better captures the symmetries of the code architecture. Once the main properties of surface codes have been discussed, we give an overview of the working principles of the algorithm used to decode this type of topological code: the minimum weight perfect matching. Finally, we show the performance of the surface codes that we introduced, comparing them based on their architecture and properties. These simulations have been performed with different error channel models to give a more thorough description of their performance in several situations showing relevant results.

Streszczenie:
The probability of undetected error P[formula omitted](є) for the primitive triple-error-correcting BCH codes of blocklength 2[formula omitted]  1, used solely for error detection on a binary symmetric channel with crossover probability є ≤ 1/2, is examined. It is shown that for odd values of m, P[formula omitted(є) increases monotonically with є. For even values of m, this is not necessarily true. However, for a fixed є, as m increases, P[formula omitted](є) approaches 2‾[formula omitted] where p is the number of parity bits. The extended double and triple-error-correcting primitive BCH codes are also examined. The undetected error probability of these codes is shown to have similar characteristics as the non-extended cases. An improved upper bound on the probability of undetected error which is valid for any linear code is derived. Comparison of this improved upper bound with the Kasami upper bound for some classes of codes is shown.

Streszczenie:
This study investigated the effect of four score study styles--no score study, study with score alone, study with score and a correct aural example, and score study at the electronic keyboard--on the pitch and rhythm error detection abilities of beginning conducting students. Subjects were 30 members of undergraduate beginning conducting classes at three midwestern universities. Four tests were developed, each having 31 four- to six-measure excerpts from band literature. Each excerpt contained only one error. Excerpts were grouped according to difficulty and assigned to tests in a modified random manner to facilitate equality of difficulty between sets. Within each test, excerpts were arranged in order of increasing difficulty and rescored to contain from one to eight parts. A counterbalanced design was utilized featuring a Latin Square into which the four score study styles were entered. Over the course of four sessions subjects received all four styles and all four tests. The orders in which subjects received score study styles were assigned on a rotational basis. Each subject within a university received the tests in the same order, but this order varied between universities. Six Hypercard © (Atkinson, 1987-90) stacks were developed on a Macintosh LC computer for presentation of the tests, management of the study, and data collection. Excerpts were played through MIDI keyboards using sampled wind instrument sounds. Study with the score and a correct aural example was found to be significantly more effective than either study with the score alone or no study. No significant difference was found between score study at the keyboard and any other score study style. There were significant differences in test scores attributable to the number of parts in examples. Generally, error detection became more difficult as the number of parts in examples increased. There were no significant differences in test scores attributable to the order of presentation of score study styles, individual example sets, or groups/order of presentation of example sets. There were significant differences in means score study time per session attributable to score study style, and in mean total time per session attributable to session number.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
This thesis will focus on preventing and overcoming the effects of radiation in RAM on board the ZA cube 2 nanosatellite. The main objective is to design, implement and test an effective error detection and correction (EDAC) system for nanosatellite applications using a SoC development board. By conducting an in-depth literature review, all aspects of single-event effects are investigated, from space radiation right up to the implementation of an EDAC system. During this study, Hamming code was identified as a suitable EDAC scheme for the prevention of single-event effects. During the course of this thesis, a detailed radiation study of ZA cube 2’s space environment is conducted. This provides insight into the environment to which the satellite will be exposed to during orbit. It also provides insight which will allow accurate testing should accelerator tests with protons and heavy ions be necessary. In order to understand space radiation, a radiation study using ZA cube 2’s orbital parameters was conducted using OMERE and TRIM software. This study included earth’s radiation belts, galactic cosmic radiation, solar particle events and shielding. The results confirm that there is a need for mitigation techniques that are capable of EDAC. A detailed look at different EDAC schemes, together with a code comparison study was conducted. There are two types of error correction codes, namely error detection codes and error correction codes. For protection against radiation, nanosatellites use error correction codes like Hamming, Hadamard, Repetition, Four Dimensional Parity, Golay, BCH and Reed Solomon codes. Using detection capabilities, correction capabilities, code rate and bit overhead each EDAC scheme is evaluated and compared. This study provides the reader with a good understanding of all common EDAC schemes. The field of nanosatellites is constantly evolving and growing at a very fast speed. This creates a growing demand for more advanced and reliable EDAC systems that are capable of protecting all memory aspects of satellites. Hamming codes are extensively studied and implemented using different approaches, languages and software. After testing three variations of Hamming codes, in both Matlab and VHDL, the final and most effective version was Hamming [16, 11, 4]2. This code guarantees single error correction and double error detection. All developed Hamming codes are suited for FPGA implementation, for which they are tested thoroughly using simulation software and optimised.

Streszczenie:
The Skynet IV satellite will provide a medium for an integrated digital communications network. This will use the packet-oriented techniques employed in many modern communications systems. One important role of the system will be to provide jam-resistant services. The advent of sophisticated electronic jammers has required the application of complex error-correcting codes and data interleaving techniques. When the satellite link forms part of a wider network, these have profound effects upon the performance of the data link protocol. This project has examined some of these effects. Terrestrial data link control protocols were found to be very inefficient, and a number of enhancements to these protocols have been proposed. An implementation of the enhanced protocols has been tested within a simulation environment. The simulator was written in Simula, an object-oriented programming language. The performance of the link was observed to be highly dependent upon the error environment presented by the underlying physical layer service (in this case a frequency-hopped spread spectrum anti-jam satellite circuit). A model of the physical layer was combined with a link layer simulator. The model used an unusual technique to reduce the computational requirements of the simulator. The project revealed that a conventional anti-jam satellite circuit is unsuitable for carriage of packetised data services. However, a number of simple changes to the protocol and error control techniques may yield a significant increase in the performance, permitting use of the service even in the harsh error environments presented by hostile jammers. These results are to be used in the specification of future satellite modems.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates the role of error-correcting codes in Distributed and Pervasive Computing. The main results are at the intersection of Security and Fault Tolerance for these environments. There are two primary areas that are explored in this thesis. 1. We have investigated protocols for large scale fault tolerant secure distributed storage. The two main concerns here are security and redundancy. In one arm of this research we developed SAFE, a distributed storage system based on a new protocol that offers a two-in-one solution to fault-tolerance and confidentiality. This protocol is based on cryptographic properties of error correction codes. In another arm, we developed esf, another prototype distributed persistent storage; esf facilitates seamless hardware extension of storage units, high resilience to loads and provides high availability. The main ingredient in its design is a modern class of erasure codes known as the {em Fountain Codes}. One problem in such large storage is the heavy overhead of the associated fingerprints needed for checking data integrity. esf deploys a clever integrity check mechanism by use of a data structure known as the {em Merkle Tree} to address this issue. 2. We also investigated the design of a new remote authentication protocol. Applications over long range wireless would benefit quite a bit from this design. We designed and implemented LAWN, a lightweight remote authentication protocol for wireless networks that deploys a randomized approximation scheme based on Error correcting codes. We have evaluated in detail the performance of LAWN; while it adds very low overhead of computation, the savings in bandwidth and power are quite dramatic.

Streszczenie:
An automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme with memory and soft error detectors has been recently proposed by Benelli. Its performance was studied mainly through computer simulation. In this thesis, a generalized version of this ARQ scheme is examined. The selection of certain thresholds and weights to minimize the bit error rate in systems using a fixed number of packet repeats is considered. The evaluation of the average number of transmissions per packet in systems in which negatively acknowledged packets are retransmitted until successfully received is described. Finally, the performance of the memory ARQ scheme with forward error correction is analyzed.
