The aim of this study is to define the eco-compatibility of biopolymers, the so called "green plastics" with a view extended to all phases of life in order to quantify the environmental impact of these materials. Nowadays, biopolymers represent the most widespread materials when it comes to replace the conventional polymers and they are considered particularly promising in terms of environmental sustainability. Indeed, the production of plastics from renewable sources in recent years has had an exponential growth (from 180 ton in 2008 to 1 million of ton in 2011). This rise is due to the market demand of products and materials with an increased environmental performance compared to “traditional plastics”, it is also due to the necessity to find alternatives to fossil fuel and to split the price of manufacturing to the fossil fuel cost. Therefore, the need to quantify the biopolymer environmental impact is becoming meaningful in order to give a concrete and objective answer to the market. However, even if there is the rapid growth on the market, the environmental data are still ambiguous and not well established. It is necessary to stress that the term “biopolymers” does not correspond to a precise and (internationally) recognized definition. In fact, This term is used both to indicate the raw material biologic origin (from biomass) and to report the information about the biodegradability in the biopolymers end of life contest. As a matter of fact, it must be specified that: - the biodegradability can be a characteristic both for a polymer coming from biomass and for one coming from fossil fuel source; - it does not exist a direct correlation between renewable source and biodegradability: a biopolymer from renewable sources is not necessarily biodegradable; - biopolymers are already implemented in the market to produces goods, for example in the packaging sector, but very often only a small percentage of their composition comes from a renewable source. In order to outline the effective sustainability when conventional polymers are replaced with biopolymers, it is necessary to consider the environmental burden related to the entire life cycle. In particular, it has to be considered: the biomass growing phase, the pellet and manufacturing production, the use phase and the end of life scenarios. Many evaluation methods are nowadays available to assess the environmental sustainability, but above all Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) remains the most reliable. LCA is in fact one of the most internationally recognized methodology for the evaluation of environmental burdens, related to a product or a service during all life cycle stages, from the extraction of raw materials to the end of life. In the specific case of biopolymers, the quantification of the environmental burdens through the application of the LCA methodology is a complex target because many are the issues to be considered for each phase and data availability is very little. In order to reach this target, a deep data collection from scientific studies and main LCA databases allowed to precisely detect specific issues concerning each of the different life cycle phases. In particular, the main issues are: the description of the parameters from the Marina Foschia Environmental Sustainability of BIOPLASTICS 3 sowing to the harvest step (raw material cultivation, carbon storage, land use change, agriculture management, transport) in biomass growing phase; the investigation of LCA data availability in the pellet production and manufacturing phase and the analysis of the existing data coming from chemical recycling plant (one of the possible end of life scenarios). It has to be mentioned that one of the most widespread biopolymer used in the market is the Polylactic acid (PLA): most of the information and data used in this study are referred to PLA life cycle.

To check rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions, many management tools are being used by different industries. In order to address environmental issues the corporate sector has seen a drastic increase in the use of environmental management systems. There is strong need to check how these environmental management systems are rendering environmental management services. Research shows that environmental management systems are mistakenly expected to prescribe technical and environmental objectives. Without describing what goals an organization must achieve, they lay out a system for management of numerous environmental obligations. Hence environmental management systems are not strategic; they tend to reactively fix issues contingent upon their occurrence and may miss opportunities to avoid problems before they occur. Further, environmental management itself is seen in isolation of a socio-ecological context, which makes environmental management lose ground and operate in a virtual vacuum. Mostly environmental management is identified as an ’agenda’ which runs counter to the overall development of an organization. Provided, environmental management systems can be integrated with basic principles of sustainable development these management systems can be utilized as a launching pad to move organizations towards sustainability. Built to render the administrative services only through a mechanism of self regulation and continuous improvement, these management systems can be used to deliver sustainable product planning. The present study illustrates the possibilities for integration of sustainability objectives into environmental management systems. In our effort to integrate sustainability in environment management systems extensive literature reviews, interviews and a case study (Hammarplast AB) have been used. For the analysis of the current reality, a framework for strategic sustainable development and methods incorporating “backcasting from principles of sustainability” – i.e. templates for sustainable product development and strategic life cycle management – has been used. The use of tools not only illustrates contemporary sustainability gaps but also gives a concrete set of guidance to integrate sustainability in environmental management systems.

The overarching question of this dissertation is in what ways complementary currencies (CC) systems can contribute to environmental sustainability from an institutional and ecological economics perspective. More particularly, the research focuses on household energy consumption, as it is an important target for policy makers in the EU. The first three chapters focus on the emerging trend of using CC systems as top-down instruments for environmental sustainability. Our findings relate to developing a taxonomy of these systems, designing new top-down CC systems adapted to the context of energy savings in the household sector, exploring the influence of these new systems on the quality of motivation in the light of Self-Determination Theory and investigating the acceptability and effectiveness of these systems. In the fourth and last chapter of this dissertation, we approach our research question from a bottom-up angle and, using an inductive methodology, we explore how community currencies could act as an organising instrument capable of helping cohousing communities achieve their energy-efficiency potential. Finally, we conclude by highlighting our contributions regarding the structure and important features of these systems, how they can be used in an ecological economics paradigm, and how they can set rules for collective action in an institutional perspective.

The approach to addressing many environmental problems requires a strong foundation in chemical science and engineering. A prime example is the developing subject of environmental engineering, where a multidisciplinary field is led by chemists and chemical engineers. This thesis presents a collection of research publications, which are of both an applied and multidisciplinary nature, primarily directed towards developing technology for energy and environmental sustainability. This has included the development of sensors for in-situ environmental monitoring and the application of nanocrystalline semiconductor photocatalysts for treatment of air, waste and potable waters. The development of laser processing methods for catalyst production and modification and the design and assessment of advanced photocatalytic reactors is also presented. Research on the reduction of carbon dioxide to fuel products is also considered. Real time in-situ sensors for environmental monitoring are an area that has seen a significant growth over the past twenty years. In this thesis, I detail my research into optical and electrochemical sensors for detection of organic chemicals and heavy metals in both the marine environment and in contaminated land. The other key research theme is the topic of water remediation using semiconductor photocatalysis. This has included treatment of industrial effluent, drinking water and water used in aquaculture. In particular, I have led research on the photocatalytic removal of cyanotoxins in water, a technique pioneered at RGU. These highly toxic chemical metabolites of cyanobacteria have been responsible for the deaths of animals and humans through ingestion of contaminated water.

Functional surfaces are of crucial importance to both fundamental and applied science. Many phenomena are driven by the properties of interfaces: catalysis, corrosion and adhesion to name a few. These properties can be modified using surface functionalisation, which in this thesis is applied to three areas of environmental concern: sustainable catalytic carbon-carbon coupling, atmospheric CO2 sequestration and photocatalytic water purification. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to these three areas and Chapter 2 summarises the common experimental techniques used throughout this thesis. Chapters 3 and 4 describe the application of pulsed plasma deposition for production of palladium functionalised catalysts for common carbon-carbon coupling reactions. For low loading palladium catalyst cloths in Chapter 3, high product yields and selectivities have been measured in conjunction with environmentally friendly solvents. In Chapter 4, palladium - poly(ionic liquid) catalyst membranes are described, which demonstrate selective permeation (separation) of the product species through the underlying membrane support. Both low loading palladium catalyst cloths and palladium - poly(ionic liquid) catalyst membranes display low levels of metal leaching allowing them to be recycled multiple times. Chapter 5 extends the use of pulsed plasma deposited imidazole moieties to the directed liquid-phase epitaxial (layer-by-layer) growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOF-508 functionalised surface displays CO2 gas capture behaviour at atmospheric concentrations proportional to the number of MOF-508 layers. Finally, Chapters 6 and 7 describe the preparation of separable P25 TiO2 based photocatalysts. Micron-sized silica-steel microcomposite core with TiO2 nanocomposite shell photocatalysts were prepared using sol-gel chemistry in Chapter 6. Their application to degradation of waterborne organic pollutants during UV illumination has been demonstrated, along with recycling via magnetic separation. Chapter 7 describes photocatalytic P25-TiO2 composite macrospheres, which possess both UV and visible light photocatalytic activity depending on the synthesis conditions. These macrospheres have been demonstrated for their use in flat bed reactors under visible light irradiation, for application to point of use solar driven removal of water borne contaminants. Additionally, Appendix 1 outlines work carried out on the fundamentals of P25 TiO2 photocatalysts, using XRD and photocatalytic degradation studies.

General interest and international regulations have begun to create a world in which consumers demand to know how their products are made and companies must provide that transparency. With over 15,000 suppliers, Li & Fung wants to obtain better insight into its suppliers' environmental sustainability characteristics. The Sustainable Apparel Coalition's (SAC) Higg Index is currently viewed as the foremost way to assess a supplier's environmental sustainability; however, its facility module only applies to certain types of industries. Li & Fung requires a tool that encompasses its full supplier base and is short and robust enough to provide valuable insight into its supply chain and help it engage factories in decreasing their environmental footprints. This thesis discusses the methodology used to create such a tool and the information acquired during a successful pilot. To facilitate integration and adoption, the categories and some of the questions and language are modeled after that in the Higg Index. However, this scorecard incorporates many different and more focused questions, and the majority of its answers are standardized to promote easy analysis post-assessment. Its scoring system is also quite robust, aiming to award points accurately and with attention to the information and quality of environmental initiative undertaken at a factory. Finally, it incorporates a novel benchmarking and visualization section, which not only will help the user compare factories, but also more clearly see the areas in which a given factory is excelling or needs improvement. This knowledge will then allow Li & Fung to engage with its suppliers and help them decrease their environmental impact. The scorecard was piloted in 14 factories in the Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Hong Kong regions. Factory types included categories such as apparel, home textiles, umbrellas, and bags. Benchmarking was done across factory types to investigate commonalities and compare initiatives.

As scientists become more aware of the imposing threats associated with climate change, university leaders are encouraged to become familiar with the principles of sustainability. Abundant research already supports the relevance of environmental sustainability in higher education; however, there exists a gap in the literature which investigates an understanding of environmental sustainability and the implementation of its practices. By examining colleges at the University of Kentucky, this study identifies organizational barriers to recognizing a thorough understanding of environmental sustainability at the departmental level. The results indicate that out of the eight colleges selected, two have no existing environmental sustainability programs or initiatives. Based on this research it is possible for departments to initiate self-assessment and situate themselves firmly inside an institutional vision of sustainability.

This study utilizes the relativity theory, from behavioral economics, to evaluate impact of a ‘decoy' product offering in a set of product choices on consumer evaluation and purchase intention of eco-friendly products. Product categories tested include multipurpose cleaners (low involvement decision), denim jeans (medium involvement), and vehicles (high involvement). 310 respondents were tested. The findings of this research indicate that the addition of a less-desirable "decoy" product offering has a positive effect on the overall evaluation and purchase intention of eco-friendly goods. Further, this research is unique in finding that the addition of a less-desirable "decoy" product offering also has a positive effect on certain evaluation components of equivalent-quality competitor products. This research provides a foundation to better market sustainably-produced goods at point-of-purchase displays (both virtual and physical), indicating that marketers can influence and increase consumer purchase of eco-friendly goods. Theoretically, this is a "triple bottom line" win: good for businesses (lower costs), consumers (safer products), and the environment (less waste and impact).

This work entitled "From Environmental Education for Sustainability to the Sustainability of Environmental Education: the paths of the Nursery School Teacher Izaldino in Maceià - AL" aims to: a) analyze how the EE is being deployed in the Nursery School Teacher Izaldino â CEMI, and what guarantees that it be implemented with Sustainability b) register the actions of ongoing training in EE developed by the Municipal Education Office of Maceià â SEMED, and the Environmental Education Program Lagoa Viva - PEALV also in MaceiÃ, and propose suggestions that contribute to the realization of EE in municipal schools. The methodology is qualitative in nature, characterized by a case study. In order to construct the theoretical framework, we reviewed the literature which discussed the Environmental Crisis, the prospect of Sustainability, Sustainability and Education, the ideological character of EE, the process of institutionalization of EE in Brazil, the Absences and Emergencies in Education and in Educators Development. Following, we present the Environmental in Childhood Education. Subsequently, we introduce some of the history, goals and actions developed by PEALV as well as the story of CEMI, analyzing how it has educated for Sustainability, and with sustainability in its pedagogical project for promotion of EE with insertion and integration in the community where the school is located. We also reflect on the conceptions of EE and environment school community (administrators, teachers, auxiliary staff and studentâs parents), and noticed some contradictions, part of the respondents feature a naturalistic view of the Environment and a behaviorist conception of EE. However, this fact has not compromised the sustainability of EE implementation in school. We could verify that the basic principles of ecological literacy (partnership, interdependence, the cyclical nature which in education, can also be understood as the cyclical exchange of information, flexibility, and diversity) proposed by Capra (1996), are present in school community of CEMI, showing by this, that the school is on the right way for the construction of Sustainability, and also, for the construction of Sustainable Educational Spaces
O presente trabalho intitulado ―Da EducaÃÃo Ambiental para a Sustentabilidade à Sustentabilidade da EducaÃÃo Ambiental: os caminhos da Creche Escola Mestre Izaldino em Maceià â AL‖ teve como objetivo: a) analisar como a EA està sendo implantada na Creche Escola Mestre Izaldino - CEMI e o que garante que ela seja implantada com Sustentabilidade; b) registrar as aÃÃes de formaÃÃo continuada em EA desenvolvidas pela Secretaria Municipal de EducaÃÃo de Maceià â SEMED e pelo Programa de EducaÃÃo Ambiental Lagoa Viva â PEALV em Maceià e c) propor sugestÃes que contribuam para a efetivaÃÃo da EducaÃÃo Ambiental na rede municipal de ensino. A metodologia utilizada caracteriza-se como qualitativa, por um Estudo de Caso. Para a construÃÃo do referencial teÃrico fez-se uma revisÃo da literatura onde discutiu-se a crise ambiental, a perspectiva da Sustentabilidade, Sustentabilidade e EducaÃÃo, o carÃter ideolÃgico da EA, o processo de InstitucionalizaÃÃo da EA no Brasil, as AusÃncias e EmergÃncias em EducaÃÃo e FormaÃÃo de Educadores, e o Ambiental na EducaÃÃo Infantil. Seguiu-se apresentando um pouco da histÃria e objetivos e aÃÃes desenvolvidas pelo Programa de EducaÃÃo Ambiental Lagoa Viva - PEALV. Contou-se a histÃria da CEMI, analisando como ela tem educado para a Sustentabilidade e com Sustentabilidade no seu projeto pedagÃgico de promoÃÃo da EA com inserÃÃo e integraÃÃo com a comunidade onde a escola està inserida. Fez-se tambÃm uma reflexÃo sobre as concepÃÃes de EA e de Meio Ambiente da comunidade escolar (gestoras, professoras, auxiliares de serviÃos gerais e pais/mÃes de alunos/as) e percebeu-se algumas contradiÃÃes, em que certa parte dos(as) entrevistados(as) apresentam uma visÃo naturalista de Meio Ambiente e outra uma concepÃÃo de EA comportamentalista, mas isto nÃo tem comprometido a sustentabilidade da implementaÃÃo da EA na escola. Pode-se verificar que os PrincÃpios BÃsicos da AlfabetizaÃÃo EcolÃgica (a parceria, a interdependÃncia, a natureza cÃclica â que na educaÃÃo pode ser entendido como o intercÃmbio cÃclico de informaÃÃo, a flexibilidade, e a diversidade) propostos por Capra (1996), estÃo presentes na comunidade escolar da CEMI, mostrando com isto que a escola està no caminho correto para a construÃÃo da Sustentabilidade, para a construÃÃo de um EspaÃo de Educadores SustentÃveis.

This thesis examines the relationship between outdoor recreation and environmental concern as part of the wider issue of environmental sustainability in late-modern societies. It includes studies of environmentalists’ (that is environmentally committed individuals’) preferences and motivations with regard to outdoor recreation, and covers the inquiries of whether and how outdoor recreation can influence levels of environmental concern. The questions addressed are how environmentalists engage in outdoor recreation, with what motives, and whether participation in outdoor recreation can influence levels of environmental concern. Empirically, the thesis is based on a mixed methods approach, including analyses of data from a national survey on outdoor recreation and a qualitative case study of the organization Nature and Youth Sweden (Fältbiologerna). Theoretically, it is based on the concepts of place, habitus and field. Study results show that environmentally committed individuals favor participation in appreciative activities in areas perceived as pristine, preferably away from urban environments. Motivations refer to these preferences, but also to aspects of discursive context, social identity and social position. These aspects are also found to be crucial regarding the influence of outdoor recreation on environmental concern. Thus, study results also show a lack of support for environmental concern as an automatic outcome of outdoor recreation. It is rather a combination of interconnected conditions referred to as: favorable place relations, adequate outdoor experience and appropriate social context. The thesis contributes to new knowledge on the relationships and connections between outdoor recreation and environmental sustainability. While the results are of importance with regard to planning for outdoor recreation and development of nature-based tourism, they are of particular interest for environmental organizations, schools and other institutions working for a more sustainable society.
This thesis examines the relationship between outdoor recreation and environmental concern as part of the wider quest for environmental sustainability in late-modern societies. Generally, outdoor recreation contributes to an increased use of resources and a growing impact on the environment. At the same time, outdoor recreation is also part of a wider narrative of fostering environmental concern, where forms of nature encounter are seen as potential pathways to pro-environmental attitudes and behavior. Thus, the thesis addresses themes of recreational participation and preferences among environmentalists - and the inquiry into the ways outdoor recreation may influence levels of environmental concern.

It is worth great effort to identify the motivation a person may have to live a certain way. Efforts in persuading a person to change are fruitless if he or she lacks the right motivation. This thesis identifies strict parameters for sustainability as well as impediments to future sustainability. Further, it examines possible ways to overcome such impediments. Building on previous research in the field of environmental motivational research, this research proposes nine motivations why people not associated with environmental behavior would want to live a more sustainable lifestyle. The small rural town of Albion, Idaho was selected as the sample for this research. Residents living within the sample area displayed very little desire to change their current lifestyle. Top motivations for living more sustainably were a desire to live a healthier lifestyle, to live more self-reliantly, and the desire to wear things out such as reusing a zip lock bag multiple times instead of throwing it out after only one use, in order to get the most use out of any one item. In a focus group discussion, comments by participants referred to the desire to keep traditions alive, provide educational opportunities to their children, and furnish their children with the ability to live a healthier lifestyle as core reasons to live sustainably. In the mind of the participants, there is not much difference between the terms "sustainable lifestyle," "self-reliant lifestyle," and a "rural lifestyle." All three lifestyles are viewed synonymously.

Increasing global human population coupled with the climate change pose serious threats on the basic needs of society. The coming decades will witness the challenges associated with the food security, land availability, clean water availability, and energy security. These issues directly or indirectly affect the various components of the Earth's Critical Zone (ECZ). Our natural resources are finite and hence a policy framework is urgently required to deal with the growing demand in food, clean energy, and water in sustainable ways. This work characterises some key components of the ECZ such as wetlands, through modelling and computational simulation approaches. A data-driven methodology known as the system identification is used to devise a nonlinear dynamic model of the tropical wetlands. The dataset used in the study corresponds to a Global Inundation Extent from Multi-Satellites. The model gives some useful insights about the dynamics of tropical wetlands and the possible effects of climate change on wetlands. The prediction power of this model is shown to be superior than the competing analytical models representing the inundation dynamics. This work also contributes towards the theoretical advancements in the nonlinear system identification method by proposing a new algorithm capable of performing the model structure selection in the NARMAX model class under the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) framework. In addition to the data-driven approach, this thesis also switches to analytical modelling framework for investigating the sustainable ways of food production and climate change mitigation through a Negative Emission Technology (NET) known as enhanced weathering. The recent reports of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have highlighted the need of an NET to meet the ambitious targets of lowering the global temperature. A process-based model representing the enhanced weathering of a mineral is developed and integrated with standard soil, vegetation process models. The integrated model is termed as the Integrated Enhanced Weathering Critical Zone Model, which is used to analyse the potentials of enhanced weathering in the UK conditions. The simulation results indicate that with the implementation of enhanced weathering in the UK farmlands, we can reduce the atmospheric carbon through sequestration as well as increase the crop yield substantially. In another words, food security and climate change mitigation can be addressed simultaneously. In a nutshell, the simulation results and analyses of this thesis can be used to design further experiments for investigating the ECZ processes like inundation dynamics and enhanced weathering. The results can also act as guidelines for framing the relevant policies towards environmental and food sustainability.

This thesis examines how to take into account both environmental and social sustainability goals to be used in scenarios or in policymaking. In paper I, we select four sustainability goals that have to be fulfilled by 2050 in normative future scenarios for Sweden in a degrowth context. Two goals address ecological challenges, climate change and land use issues specifically. The other two goals address social issues and deal with participation and influence in society as well as resource security and distribution. The environmental goals will require significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and land use compared to today's levels. The social goals are within reach today, although the degree of fulfillment differs across different groups in society. In paper II, we review existing and suggested climate or energy targets at a global, national and local scale and search for justice perspectives or for proposals for such perspectives. We find that the justice aspect is not explicitly formulated in existing climate and energy targets and that, the community of justice i.e. the receivers of benefits or burdens, in our reviewed examples, is limited to human beings, thereby excluding all other living beings. In paper III, we assess how four different backcasting scenarios for land use in a Swedish context, all of which fulfil a climate target of zero CO2 emissions in 2060, impact on other sustainability goals. We conduct a goal conflict analysis between the chosen climate goal and the other Swedish environmental goals, the gender equity goals and the public health goal. We find that there are more potential goal conflicts in scenarios with no global climate agreement. From the results of all three papers, I then discuss several aspects that have to be taken into account when setting goals, such as the major uncertainties associated with long-term goals, the elusiveness, the normativity of goals and the need to separate goals from the means to achieve the goals.
Utsläpp av växthusgaser (GHG) och andra miljöproblem, såsom förlust av biologisk mångfald, markanvändning och övergödning av sötvatten och marina kustekosystem, är stora utmaningar för mänskligheten. De planetära gränser för dessa områden har redan överskridits. Av de 16 svenska miljömålen för 2020, vars syfte är att lösa dessa ödesfrågor, bedöms bara ett – "Ett skyddande ozonskikt" – uppnås i tid. Vad gäller sociala mål på global nivå fram till 2015 – FN:s Milleniemål – har visserligen betydande framsteg gjorts på en del områden, t.ex. jämställdhet i utbildningen, men utfallet skiljer sig mellan länder och inom länder med avseende på socioekonomisk grupp och kön. Denna avhandling undersöker hur man kan ta hänsyn till både miljömässiga och sociala hållbarhetsmål som ska användas i framtidsscenarier eller som underlag till beslutsfattande. I artikel I väljs fyra hållbarhetsmål i en tvärvetenskaplig process. Målen ska uppfyllas 2050 i s.k. normativa framtidsscenarier (backcasting) för Sverige i en kontext av nedväxt eller låg tillväxt. De två första målen handlar om klimatförändringar och markanvändningsfrågor. De två andra är sociala mål och omfattar delaktighet och inflytande i samhället samt tillgång till resurser och fördelning av dessa. För att uppnå de valda miljömålen, kommer drastiska minskningar av växthusgasutsläpp (GHG) och markanvändning att behövas, jämfört med dagens situation. Båda de sociala målen är inom räckhåll i dag, även om graden av uppfyllelse skiljer sig mellan olika grupper i samhället. I artikel II genomförs en kvalitativ dokumentanalys för att samla information om befintliga och föreslagna klimat- och energimål på global, nationell och lokal nivå. Vi letar också efter rättviseperspektiv i befintliga klimat- och energimål samt förslag till sådana perspektiv i föreslagna mål i den vetenskapliga litteraturen liksom i rapporter från miljöorganisationer. En slutsats är att rättvisa inte är uttryckligen formulerat i befintliga klimat- och energimål. Vi använder en teoretisk ram för social rättvisa som skiljer mellan vem som ger och får det som fördelas, vad som fördelas (rättvisevaluta) och hur det fördelas (distributionsprinciper). Utifrån vår analys fann vi att en egalitär princip används för de flesta föreslagna målen, exempelvis för globala mål om utsläpp av växthusgaser per capita. Samtliga av de granskade målen omfattar endast rättvisa mellan människor och exkluderar därmed andra levande varelser. I artikel III analyserar vi hur fyra olika backcastingscenarier för markanvändning i ett svenskt sammanhang år 2060 påverkar andra hållbarhetsmål när ett klimatmål om noll CO2-utsläpp är uppfyllt. Med hjälp av en matris gör vi en målkonfliktanalys med de övriga svenska miljömålen, jämställdhetsmål och mål för folkhälsan med dess 11 tillhörande målområden. Analysen visar att de potentiella målkonflikterna är fler i scenarier utan globalt klimatavtal. Detta beror främst på att vissa miljöfrågor måste behandlas på global nivå, samt att minskningen i miljöpåverkan kommer att bero på åtgärder som inte bara vidtagits i Sverige utan också globalt. Utifrån dessa tre artiklar diskuterar jag sedan olika aspekter som måste beaktas vid fastställandet av mål. Eftersom hållbarhetsmål är långsiktiga och kännetecknas av en hel del osäkerhet diskuterar jag behovet av att sätta upp "försiktigt utopiska mål" (cautiously utopian goals), det vill säga mål som kan vara omöjliga att uppnå, men möjliga att närma sig. Sådana mål kan få till stånd de djupgående förändringar som krävs för en hållbar och rättvis framtid samtidigt som de är acceptabla för de intressenter som berörs. Mål är ofta otydliga vad gäller vad som ingår eller inte. Vad gäller klimatmålen, exempelvis, är det ofta otydligt huruvida utsläpp från handel är inkluderade eller ej och vilket referensår en viss utsläppsminskning baseras på. Sådana avgränsningar bör synliggöras och helst diskuteras med avseende på hur de kan påverka till exempel andra länders utsläppsminskningar. Det finns också ett behov att skilja mål från medel för att uppnå målen, eftersom det gör det möjligt att formulera mål som kan uppnås på olika sätt. Ekonomisk tillväxt ses ofta som ett mål i sig, såsom i FN:s nya hållbarhetsmål (SDGs). Tillväxt borde dock betraktas som ett rent verktyg för att uppnå egentliga mål rörande, exempelvis, välbefinnande. Mål är också normativa och återspeglar både olika kulturella och etiska perspektiv på vad en god hälso- och sjukvård eller bostadsstandard bör vara. De underliggande värdena bör därför också synliggöras och ifrågasättas. Både inter- och intragenerationella rättviseperspektiv bör göras mer konkreta och tydliga så att sådana frågor kan följas upp. En bra start kan vara att förutom ett territoriellt perspektiv börja använda ett konsumtionsperspektiv vid upprättandet av klimat-eller markanvändningsmål, då effekten av vår konsumtion på andra länders miljö och hälsa har ökat under de senaste årtiondena.

Recent environmental catastrophes such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico and the rising acid mine water in Johannesburg, South Africa, have demonstrated the far reaching environmental, social and financial consequences of unsustainable environmental management practices. Mining is an activity that significantly contributes to South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product but has the potential to significantly impact the environment and a diverse set of stakeholders. As a result, it is imperative that mining activities are undertaken in a sustainable manner. This research studied the mining sector’s response to environmental sustainability on a company level. The study entailed the use of a mixed methods approach within a strategic framework to enable the researcher to confirm the maturity level of current practices and simultaneously explore the extent to which companies are preparing for the future. The key research findings suggest that South African mining companies have current practices that are relatively developed, with insufficient focus on innovation to meet the future sustainability challenge. Key recommendations to meet the sustainability challenge include industry collaboration, a change in paradigm by companies, integration of suppliers into product stewardship practices and adequately managing the tension between the local empowerment and environmental agenda. The major theme of this research has been to understand the South African banking sector’s response to environmental sustainability. The research was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. To elicit understanding of these responses, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with representatives from seven South African banks. The research interviews revolved around four core themes; the environmental drivers, environmental strategy implementation, the corresponding practices undertaken and their frame of reference according to the sustainable value framework, together with the relevant benefits and costs realised. The key research findings of the study include: all of the banks have either formalised or are in the process of formalizing a response to the pursuit of environmental sustainability; the banks either have or are in the process of developing a sustainability strategy; the growing environmental concerns and credit risks are currently the primary drivers of pursuing environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the practices adopted by the banks to pursue environmental sustainability were currently internally focused with priority for operational quick wins addressing risk and cost reduction. Based on the research findings, recommendations have been made to further enhance the pursuit of environmental sustainability. These include: integration of environmental sustainability factors in performance reporting for all business units; integration of environmental sustainability criteria in all business case assessments. The thesis aims to create a rule-based framework in order to facilitate corporate strategy making and regulatory drafting pertaining to sustainable development. To do so, the premise is set that business sustainability can be broadly categorised in four interdependent pillars, namely, Environmental, Economic and Social sustainability and Corporate Governance. Accordingly, four case studies are devised, each focusing on one of said areas of business sustainability in different industries and business sectors. The findings of each case study are instrumental to the final conclusions of the current thesis. Covering a vast array of examples in corporate behaviour with regards to business sustainability led to the understanding that industries and regulators suffer from a lack of a standardised approach to implement a common theme within sustainability. It is submitted that the current sustainability reporting standards do not distinguish between rules and advantageous reporting criteria. To alleviate this problem the thesis draws from the findings of each case study and devises a rules-based system which drafters of legislation and corporate sustainability strategists can benefit from as a set of guiding norms and principles to aid them in their implementing behaviours. These rules are discretionary in application and non-exhaustive; readers of said framework may choose which rules are most applicable and if so, how they would apply to their circumstances. Therefore, extensive opportunity for further research remains in order to complement the implementation of these rules.

L’industria fashion è una delle industrie più inquinanti al mondo e, in un periodo storico in cui sempre più consumatori cercano di adottare comportamenti d’acquisto volti ad avere un impatto quanto più positivo possibile, le aziende operanti nel settore devono adeguare il loro modello di business per rispondere ad una crescente domanda di sostenibilità ambientale. Il progetto di tesi vuole fornire una fotografia dello status quo in merito alle certificazioni di sostenibilità ambientale nella fashion industry, con particolare focus sui materiali. Le certificazioni costituiscono infatti uno strumento oggettivo di comunicazione dell’impegno nel perseguimento di strategie di sostenibilità. La scelta di analizzare specificatamente quelle relative ai materiali si basa sul fatto che la produzione e la lavorazione delle materie prime è una delle fasi più inquinanti del processo produttivo del tessile e dell’abbigliamento. Dapprima è stata svolta una ricerca delle certificazioni di sostenibilità ambientale riferite ai materiali sulla base della loro diffusione; queste sono poi state descritte al fine di coglierne obiettivi e requisiti necessari per il conseguimento. Infine, le certificazioni sono state confrontate con lo scopo di elaborare un ranking, potenzialmente utile per le aziende che vogliono orientare una decisione in un panorama così complesso. La seconda parte della ricerca prende invece in considerazione le strategie di sostenibilità ambientale perseguite dai principali gruppi incumbent che operano nel segmento luxury: si è effettuata una verifica di coerenza tra le mission di sostenibilità dichiarate negli annual reports e le tipologie di certificazioni richieste, laddove indicate, dai gruppi alle supply chain, per rispondere alle suddette mission.

Research purpose: Environmental issues have become a regular debate within social, business and political arenas. The need to combine social, environmental and economic systems to achieve a sustainable future (Triple Bottom Line), is gaining prominence within many international development projects. The study of traditional business Environmental Management Systems (EMS) leads to the observation that such systems place primary emphasis upon economic and environmental factors. The project begins with the proposal that an EMS built by an organisations employees' has a greater potential to identify practical environmental impacts and reduce social resistance to change.Methods: This thesis details the development of a seven-stage framework for environmental change referred to as Socio-Environmental Cohesion for Sustainability (SECS). The framework is trialled within a case study organisation (OrgX) using an interpretivist philosophy of social constructionism to guide the research. An action research project is conducted with the researcher acting as an observing participant of the change process. The developed framework follows a multimethodology design of organisational engagement, with strong emphasis placed upon the social values that can drive environmental management practices. The combination of cybernetic and social tools of organisational analysis is shown to provide a unique approach to environmental strategy design; Viable Systems Model, Team Syntegrity, Cultural Analysis, Social Network Analysis.Results: The Cultural and Social Network Analyses provide evidence of an informal environmental network (EWG) contained within OrgX, and identify the core social environmental values of the employee group. A Team Syntegrity workshop is performed and develops a bottom-up participatory approach to environmental strategy designs between the EWG and business management. Following the workshop, OrgX is shown to implement 56% of the developed environmental strategy within eight months. The Viable Systems Model is used to diagnose the organisations structure, which is then combined with the Social Network Analysis to establish the outreach of the EWG.Conclusions: The recognition of the informal environmental network as an official management committee, improvements to operational efficiency and practical benefits to onsite biodiversity, indicates that the SECS framework is capable of addressing all aspects of the Triple Bottom Line.

The purpose of this research was to explore the state of sustainability in U.S. Parks and Protected Areas (PPAs) as well as to create a tool to help measure and maintain sustainability in PPAs. The primary research question driving this research was “What is the current state of sustainability in U.S. PPAs?” This guiding question also addressed a sub-question, which asked, “Can a tool be developed and validated to measure the state of sustainability in parks?” The second research question in this project was “Do current park managers believe the use of a sustainable parks certificate would aid ongoing efforts to uphold and maintain sustainability in their parks?” Each research question was addressed through the creation of a survey to measure the state of sustainability through five hypothesized domains, with 55 Likert-scale-style questions and six open-ended questions addressing the certificate program. The survey opened in May 2017 and ended in October 2017. It was sent to approximately 2,645 managers across the country and included national parks and state parks in U.S. states and territories. The data showed that participants were in favor of creating a sustainable parks certificate to help them become more sustainable. A chief recommendation was to start an initiative aimed at providing an online platform for sustainability training geared specifically toward PPAs. This research project has begun the steps necessary to advance the state of sustainability in U.S. PPAs.

Industry is a key player in the transition to a sustainable society, where manufacturing companies need to respond to the challenges of environmental concerns in several ways. The need for managing environmental technological change in production systems is and will continue to be a challenge for manufacturing companies, as they often tend to focus on short-term priorities to stay economically competitive, rather than developing the organisation to manage longer-term environmental competitiveness. In accordance with this, the objective of the thesis is to develop an understanding of how to manage environmental technological change in a production system. By identifying four categories of contextual preparedness, these being short-term focused, trade-off prepared, balance-seeking or long-term prepared, the thesis provides perspectives on how to manage change related to time and contextual aspects. The operation managers need to manage the projects by allocating individuals who can work systematically and build a strong knowledge base by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. It shows that knowledge is not only about technology but also about realising the need for change and developing strong longer-term objectives. A model is developed to support operations managers with purposeful actions, such as reflecting upon their long-term capabilities and making conscious decisions when to manage their environmental technology change processes regarding their own production system. The model presents how to “zip” sustainability into operations, so as to provide guidance for operations managers on how to systematically manage long-term change in a context that needs to work with multiple time aspects - and priorities. By using the term zip it is emphasised that the long-term developments have to be consciously integrated into the organisation aligned to the short-term needs. Literature reviews, as well as four empirical case studies, have been conducted in order to explore environmental technological change. In the first two studies, the factors which affect environmental technological change in a production system have been identified. In the two subsequent studies the change processes as such were studied, leading to an increased understanding of how the production system and temporal dimensions influence the change processes. The studies conducted and the results are presented in six appended papers.

Early literature in the field of environmental ethics suggests that environmental problems are not technological problems requiring technological solutions, but rather are problems deeply rooted in Western value systems calling for a reorientation of our values. This dissertation examines what resources are available to us in reorienting our values if this starting point is correct. Three positions can be observed in the environmental ethics literature on this issue: 1. We can go back and reinterpret our Western canonical texts and figures to determine if they can be useful in providing fresh insight on today's environmental challenges; 2. We abandon the traditional approaches, since these are what led to the crisis in the first place, and we seek to establish entirely new approaches and new environmental identities to face the environmental challenges of the 21st century; 3. We look outside of the Western tradition for guidance from other cultures to see how they inhabit and interact with the natural world. This dissertation presents and evaluates these three options and ultimately argues for an approach similar to the third option, suggesting that dialogue with indigenous cultures and traditions can help us to reorient our values and assist in developing more sustainable environmental identities.

Los resultados de esta tesis demostraron que es posible una evaluación y mejora ambiental constante de los sistemas lácteos mediante el uso de herramientas especializadas como CalcPEFDairy, auditorías energéticas e indicadores de economía circular; y que juntos son capaces de identificar y proponer medidas de mejora de alto impacto. Los resultados también demuestran la viabilidad de comunicar adecuadamente los resultados medioambientales obtenidos con CalcPEFDairy como una estrategia de marketing. La calidad y confiabilidad de los resultados obtenidos de las herramientas implementadas en esta tesis es tal que pueden usarse en un proceso de verificación externo para obtener una declaración ambiental y una Ecoetiqueta para un producto lácteo disponible en el mercado. This thesis results shows that a constant environmental assessment and improvement of dairy systems is possible through the use of specialised tools such as CalcPEFDairy, energy audits and circular economy indicators; which together are capable to identify and propose high impact improvement measures. The results demonstrate the feasibility of properly communicating the CalcPEFDairy environmental assessment outcomes as a marketing strategy since their quality and reliability is such that they can be used in an external verification process to obtain an environmental declaration and eco-label for a market available dairy product. This verified green credentials give dairy producers the real possibility of increasing their economic returns without affecting their system and products environmental sustainability.

This thesis is about space sustainability and the need to protect the outer space environment for the long term. It attempts to address this by assessing the outer space liability regime, particularly the fundamental flaw that it does not directly account for damage caused to the space environment. Jurisprudential lessons can be learnt from existing environmental liability regimes for hazardous activities on earth, to protect the outer space environment. While it is acknowledged that there are short comings in the environmental liability regimes as they stand, if the inherent weaknesses are remedied environmental liability could be a good tool for deterrence and accountability for damage caused to the space environment by polluters.
Cette thèse est sur la soutenabilité de l'espace et la nécessité de protéger l'environnement spatial à long terme. Elle traite du problème en regardant le régime de responsabilité civile spatiale, notamment en se penchant sur le fait qu'il ne tient pas compte des dommages causés à l'environnement spatial. Des leçons de jurisprudence peuvent être tirées des régimes actuels de responsabilité environnementale pour les activités dangereuses sur terre, pour protéger l'environnement spatial. Alors qu'il est reconnu qu'il y a des limitations dans les régimes de responsabilité tels qu'ils se présentent, si l'on remédie aux faiblesses inhérentes, la responsabilité environnementale pourrait être un bon outil de dissuasion et de responsabilité pour les dommages causés à l'environnement spatial par les pollueurs.

This exploratory study aims to find out the challenges multinational corporations are facing when communicating about the ecological pillar of sustainability internally. By conducting an in-depth investigation of one multinational company, the study identifies three themes which imply potential drawbacks for the company’s goal to become an environmental pioneer within the operating industry. The first obstacle is related to the abstract content and intrinsic character of the sustainability idea. Furthermore, complex international business structures including different target groups hamper the internal sustainability communication, which pursues a peculiarly wide audience and is therefore dependent on the multiplier effect for the spread of information. Moreover, the intrinsic value of sustainability causes a priority lack, perception difficulties of the communicated messages as well as gaps between attitude and behavior. A long time period is required in order for the internal communication to achieve a change. All in all, especially the abstract, voluntary and intrinsic character of sustainability makes the communication uniquely difficult and thus demanding an overall change of the society’s attitude and prospect towards the topic.

Education and training are recognized as the crux of developing green organizational cultures in the achievement of corporate sustainability. Should ecology training be linked with the practical work of corporate members? Should they “learn by doing” or “do by learning”? The present study covered the links between environmental education and training and its success in greening the employees and corporate cultures. It investigated the effectiveness of environmental training and models a suitable training approach in developing environmentally aware corporate cultures. The study first revealed the drivers and challenges of implementing environmental education and training in managerial perception. 13 environmental managers of sustainability leading corporations and governmental departments in Hong Kong were surveyed by either face-to-face interviews or mailed questionnaires survey. The role of environmental education and training in raising employees’ awareness toward a more sustainable manner has been fully recognized by the surveyed mangers. However, engaging employees in environmental learning was found to be the single biggest challenge among the managers. Managers have faced a dilemma when designing training content and training approaches. A wide range of rationales and determining factors were identified in the study. They were employee interests and motivation, training practicability and applicability, justification of resources and continuity of training impacts. A series of environmental education and awareness training programmes of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) were used as a case study. Evaluation of the training outcomes, in terms of changes in participants’ environmental knowledge, attitudes and behaviour, was surveyed by using self-completion questionnaires with retrospective post- and then-test design. Across the 47 responses, the results show that employees gained knowledge and changed their values and behaviour towards the environment significantly. The acquisition of knowledge and attitude change leads to the development of green behaviour both in the workplace and at home. Training design and approach, relevance and applicability of training content were found to have the greatest impact on the training outcomes. A combination of direct- and indirect- experiences in the training is also essential as the employees have direct contact with nature for affective-based attitudes while a proportion of indirect experience training is responsible for intellectual development. Training should be available for employees from each stratum in the company rather than only focusing on pinpointed management staff since it could promote a workable interface between employees and the corporation. Furthermore, organizational support including supervisory and peer support is vital to the training outcomes by encouraging employees to perform pro-environmental behaviour at work, in turn, greening the corporate culture. This study brings to the conclusion that, even though transition of sustainable corporate culture is a long process, it could be achievable in real-life businesses through utilizing an effective environmental education and training with properly designed strategies.

The increased consumption of finite resources threatens the preservation of the environment. Environmental pioneers George Perkins Marsh, Gifford Pinchot, and Aldo Leopold were the first to address this concern in the United States. With this background, environmental sustainability in the United States has become a common consideration for public, private, and government organizations. Many organizations have implemented environmental management systems to handle environmental issues. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore what environmental sustainability programs manufacturing firms in West Michigan pursue and their motivation for doing so. Leaders from 13 West Michigan manufacturing companies were interviewed. Research questions addressed the benefits administrators perceive can be gained by adopting environmental sustainability programs, disadvantages in adopting environmental sustainability programs, and what organizations are doing to pursue environmental programs. Cost savings was cited as a major reason for pursuing sustainability programs with the lack of time and resources being the greatest restraint environmental administrators encounter. Company leadership noted that sustainability programs provided their firm a competitive advantage with many Millennial employees preferring companies that manage robust environmental programs. The sustainability strategies identified in this research can be leveraged by firms seeking to implement or improve their environmental programs.

There is much that is being done to deal with these issues, such as recently passed EU legislation mandating takeback and recycling systems for electronic goods. The influence of corporate culture on the strategies used by firms to meet the environmental sustainability challenge has been explored in this dissertation. This was investigated through web-based questionnaires that were administered to employees in companies who would have knowledge of both their employer‟s corporate culture and corporate sustainability practices.To determine this, the respondents were requested to rate both the corporate strategies undertaken to meet the environmental challenge, as well as the corporate culture where they work. The corporate strategies were evaluated using a bespoke instrument which was constructed from various strategy instruments found in the literature. The corporate culture was evaluated using a well-known organisational culture instrument available in the literature. Potential contextual variables pertaining to the perceptions of the respondents, as well as to the business and industry sector characteristics, were evaluated as well.The findings indicated that the contextual variables had little or no effect on either the corporate culture or the corporate strategies undertaken by the firm, and that a strong comprehensive culture correlated strongly with positive corporate strategies. Corporate cultures that emphasise social coordination (or organic culture forms) exhibited stronger correlations with positive corporate strategies than those which emphasise formal control methods (or mechanistic forms). The focus of the firm, whether on internal dynamics or the external environment, did not show a significant effect on the corporate strategies that were undertaken by the firm.A sustainability culture was synthesised from the findings of the research, which concludes with recommendations regarding further research into this topic.

The purpose of this study was to examine choice-making as it relates to providing a source of clean water to those at varying social distances. A discounting survey was completed by 65 participants asking them to choose between spending a specified about of money on plastic water bottles that have a 100% chance of harming the environment or spending $1000 on a water filtration system that has a 0% chance of harming the environment. Results indicated that as social distance increased, responding became more impulsive as evident by a steeper amount of discounting. For “Person #1”, 27.69% of participants chose to spend money on plastic water bottles while for “Person #100”, 53.8% of participants chose to spend money on plastic water bottles. The R2 calculated was 0.8633. Results also indicated that there was a positive correlation between frequency of behaving in sustainable ways and how much one valued the environment, as well as how concerned one was with the environment. Implications, strengths and limitations, and future research opportunities are discussed.

Environmental sustainability is clearly one of the most ardent problems that societies are facing today. The new face of the world seen from globalization perspective, sometimes results in corporations being stronger than states, by twisting the politics to play in their favour. It is important that highly educated employees contribute more to push the organizational environmental performance and mitigate for measures being adopted to tackle the climate change issues. Generations Y and Z are playing a key role in stopping this crisis, as they're the majority of the working population worldwide for the present decade. This study aims to indicate which factors mainly influence pro-environmental intention of current students in various European universities, when considering a job. The literature and latest acknowledgements from the job market portray a tendency that the job seekers and hiring companies should have compatible core values in order to attract and nourish long-term collaborations. The correlation between the students being sustainability savvy and their criterias when looking for employment needs to be checked, because this could be a source of radical changes in the job market and the companies' models of running their businesses in the future.
Miljömässig hållbarhet är en av de mest akuta utmaningar samhällen står inför idag. Globalisering resulterar ibland i företag som är starkare än stater, genom att de påverkar politiska beslut för sin egen fördel. Det är viktigt att högutbildade medarbetare bidrar till att ökad miljöprestanda och minska klimatpåverkan i sina organisationer. Generation Y och Z spelar där en nyckelroll i att stoppa klimatkrisen, eftersom de detta decennium utgör majoriteten av världens förvärvsarbetare. Denna studie syftar till att finna de faktorer som huvudsakligen påverkar miljöpositiva intentioner hos nuvarande studenter vid olika europeiska universitet, när de överväger en anställning. Litteraturen och arbetsmarknaden visar på vikten av kompatibla kärnvärden mellan företag och arbetssökande för att attrahera och nära långsiktiga samarbeten. Men korrelationen mellan elevers miljökunnande och deras kriterier för företagsval behöver studeras djupare, eftersom det kan vara en källa till radikal förändring av arbetsmarknader och företagens arbetssätt.

This study explores the overlapping of platform technology and cooperative processes in logistics and how this can be of interest to make the industry more environmentally sustainable. It examines the literature regarding platform technology, horizontal collaboration, and environmental sustainability in logistics. Data was collected through interviews with experts in the logistics industry, representatives from logistics companies and a software solutions provider, to obtain a nuanced image from the industry. A framework was created to provide answers to how digital platforms can better be utilized for cooperation in logistics to improve environmental sustainability. In order to fulfill this, incentives and challenges for small- and medium-sized enterprises to cooperate through platform technology were identified. The incentives that were found were classified into driving and pushing. The driving incentives refer to evident benefits for small- and medium-sized enterprises of joining cooperative logistics platforms, while pushing incentives are based on external factors and current issues that potentially could be solved through a cooperative platform. The identified challenges to cooperating through digital platforms are related to cooperative processes, technology and digitalization, and environmental sustainability. These were analyzed from a systems perspective to understand how these affect the problem on several levels in the industry of logistics. Together, the incentives and challenges form the final framework and illustrate how platforms for cooperation can be realized in the logistics industry.
Denna studie undersöker överlappningen av digitala plattformar och samarbetsprocesser inom  logistik och hur detta kan vara av intresse för att göra industrin mer miljömässigt hållbar. Studien utforskar forskningslitteraturen om digitala plattformar, horisontellt samarbete och miljömässig hållbarhet inom logistik. Data samlades in genom intervjuer utförda med experter inom logistikindustrin och representanter från en mjukvarulösningsleverantör och från små- och medelstora företag inom logistik, för att få en nyanserad bild från branschen. Ett ramverk skapades för att ge svar på hur digitala plattformar kan användas bättre för samarbete inom logistik för att förbättra miljömässig hållbarhet. För att uppfylla detta så identifierades incitament och utmaningar för små- och medelstora företag för samarbete genom plattformsteknik. De incitament som hittades klassificerades som drivande och pressande. De drivande incitamenten syftar till de uppenbara fördelar för små- och medelstora företag att ansluta sig till kooperativa logistikplattformar, medan de drivande incitamenten baseras på externa faktorer och problem som potentiellt kan lösas genom en samarbetsplattform. Utmaningarna för att samarbeta via digitala plattformar identifierades relaterat till samarbetsprocesser, teknik och digitalisering, samt miljömässig hållbarhet. Dessa utmaningar identifierades sedan ur ett systemperspektiv för att förstå hur de påverkar problemet på flera nivåer inom logistikbranschen. Tillsammans utgör incitamenten och utmaningarna det slutgiltiga ramverket och illustrerar hur plattformar för samarbete kan förverkligas mer inom logistikindustrin.

The general objective of this research is to explore theories and methodologies of sustainability indicators, environmental management and decision making disciplines with the operational purpose of producing scientific, robust and relevant information for supporting system understanding and decision making in real case studies. Several tools have been applied in order to increase the understanding of socio-ecological systems as well as providing relevant information on the choice between alternatives. These tools have always been applied having in mind the complexity of the issues and the uncertainty tied to the partial knowledge of the systems under study. Two case studies with specific application to performances measurement (environmental performances in the case of the K8 approach and sustainable development performances in the case of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy) and a case study about the selection of sustainable development indicators amongst Municipalities in Scotland, are discussed in the first part of the work. In the second part of the work, the common denominator among subjects consists in the application of spatial indices and indicators to address operational problems in land use management within the territory of the Ravenna province (Italy). The main conclusion of the thesis is that a ‘perfect’ methodological approach which always produces the best results in assessing sustainability performances does not exist. Rather, there is a pool of correct approaches answering different evaluation questions, to be used when methodologies fit the purpose of the analysis. For this reason, methodological limits and conceptual assumptions as well as consistency and transparency of the assessment, become the key factors for assessing the quality of the analysis.

This thesis deals empirically with various research questions in environmental economics. In particular the issues of sustainability and eco-efficiency are approached on three different data-sets. The first paper deals with the analysis of eco-efficiency for 103 provincial (NUTS 3 - Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics 3) capitals of Italy throughout 2000-2008. It focuses on the link among economic growth, energy consumption and air pollution, modeling cities as territorial units that ought to promote growth, while at the same time minimising its environmental impact. Subsequently, the eco-efficiency of this panel of provincial capitals is measured through panel estimates of an input-distance function. Within this procedure, considering some environmental control variables, the paper evaluates if environmental best practices correspond either to those municipalities that adopt environment-friendly policies or to cities characterised by a particular urban context. The evidence points to the existence of a significant link between economic development, energy consumption and air pollution at the provincial capital level. The most ecoefficient provincial capitals are also among the wealthier, which is consistent with an Environmental Kuznets Curve. The second paper investigates the Ecological Footprint indicator by focusing on the notion of sustainable development and then of carrying capacity of land. The impact of man on nature is explored through an empirical analysis of the growth rate of population, and the percentage of urban and rural population, in Europe. The level of CO2 emissions per inhabitant in the EU is compared with that of developing countries. Through a sectoral approach, the total CO2 emissions per capita from fuel combustion, electricity and heat production, manufacturing industries and construction, transport and other sources are separately appraised. The third paper studies the relationship between rice production and methane emissions. Rice farming is believed to be a major anthropogenic source of methane emissions, which are measured emissions at both country and world levels of aggregation. It presents a quantitative estimation of the statistical relationship between rice production dynamics and methane emissions with regression estimates computed (country-wise and globally) over a large set of countries. The evidence only partly validates the expectation of a positive statistical influence of rice production on methane emissions. In fact a Kuznetstype evidence shows up: increasing rice production is correlated with fewer emissions. This negative relationship holds for a measure of countries sufficient to emerge significantly also at the world level. [edited by Author]

The aims of this thesis are the development of theoretical approaches and their application to real cases in order to assess the sustainability of production processes. Adopting an approach of Life Cycle Thinking allows to compare different technologies, both traditional and innovative ones, evaluating the best performance from an energy and environmental perspective. Currently there are many technologies that are presented as sustainable at the theoretical level. However there are actually insufficient tools to verify that technologies are truly sustainable, not only at the theoretical level and considering not only the final stage of the operation, but the entire life cycle. Moreover there are insufficient tools for ranking technologies on the basis of their sustainability. In order to select the most efficient technology, the question is: "Which criteria can be used for selecting the most appropriate technology?". The present thesis proposes instruments to answer that question: the Analogical Model, EROI (Energy Return On Investment) and EPT (Energy Payback Time), SEI (Environmental Sustainability Index). The uncertainty is treated in a dedicated chapter. The first section of the thesis is dedicated to a theoretical analysis of those arguments, which are applied in the second section in four case studies. The first case study is dedicated to the Dark Anaerobic Fermentation in two stages: hydrogen and methane are produced using waste organic materials as substrate. The second one illustrates the comparison between four prototypes of nano-structured heat exchangers and a traditional heat exchanger (Thermonano European Project). Clothes drying is a very energy-intensive process and it has a high impact in the domestic electricity consumption. In 2005, the EU-28 total energy consumption of household tumble dryers has been estimated at 21 TWh and an increase up to 30 TWh in 2020 will be expected. Therefore, there is a strong interest to improve the efficiency of these household appliances in order to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, the traditional technology of domestic tumble dryers, based on opened or closed air cycle, uses electrical heaters to warm up the process air before the entrance in the drum. Since many years, vapour compression heat pump system has been identified as a suitable technology for more efficient household tumble dryers. In the case of heat pump tumble dryers, it is of the greatest importance to pursue efficiency improvement, by focusing on the single components or process and in the general unit operation. The research focuses on the process of mass transfer in order to improve the condensation rate, leading to a faster removal of moisture. The fin surface characteristics impact on heat and mass transfer rate, as well as on air pressure losses; in a tumble dryer the selection of the surface which leads to the fastest removal of moisture from the air is crucial. For this purpose, an experimental study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of different coatings on evaporator performance during dehumidification process. Studies in the existing literature that investigate into the impact of fin coatings in dehumidification process are limited. Moreover, data at high air absolute humidity (more than 40 gv/kga) are not available in the open literature. A wind tunnel was then designed and built at the ITC-CNR of Padova for experimental investigations. A characterization of the heat exchanger behaviour in dry conditions was performed. Then, tests in dehumidification conditions were carried out to compare experimental results to a dehumidification model. Good model predictions was found using a log-mean enthalpy method (LMED) for tests with air inlet absolute humidity up to 30 gv/kga; for higher values of this parameter, the relative difference between experimental and model results increased. The model assumption of a unit value of the Lewis Factor was not verified for tests with air inlet absolute humidity higher than 30 gv/kga; a Lewis Factor equal to 0.5 was calculated. An alternative model was then considered, based on a modification of the previous log-mean enthalpy difference method (m-LMED). This model included the Lewis Factor value in the calculation of the overall heat transfer coefficient. For tests with air inlet absolute humidity higher than 30 gv/kga, relative differences below 10% was found between experimental results and m-LMED predictions. The core of the experimental activity investigated into the impact of fin coatings on heat exchanger performance in dehumidification conditions. Experimental test conditions were characterized by values of air inlet absolute humidity higher than 40 gv/kga. Three test sample with different surface characteristics were analyzed: one is the untreated aluminium surface, a second with an hydrophilic coating and a third with an hydrophobic coating. Comparisons were carried out according to the total heat transfer rate, the drain rate and the retained weight. Dehumidification tests were performed in steady state conditions at different air volumetric flow rates. The hydrophobic sample presented the lowest values of heat transfer rate and drain rate for all the investigated flow rates, but it showed the highest values of retained weight. On the other hand, the hydrophilic and the untreated samples showed similar values of heat transfer rate, drain rate and retained weight, highlighting no relevant difference between their behaviour in dehumidification conditions.
Il processo di asciugatura dei vestiti ha un elevato impatto nel consumo elettrico domestico. Di conseguenza, c'è un forte interesse nel miglioramento dell'efficienza energetica delle asciugatrici domestiche al fine di ridurre il loro consumo di energia. La tecnologia tradizionale di questi elettrodomestici utilizza resistenze elettriche per riscaldare l'aria prima dell'ingresso nel cesto. Da alcuni anni, i sistemi a pompa di calore sono stati identificati come la tecnologia più adatta per realizzare asciugatrici domestiche più efficienti. Nel caso di questo tipo di elettrodomestico, il miglioramento dell'efficienza del singolo componente, del singolo processo o del funzionamento generale ha un ruolo fondamentale. In particolare, lo studio si è focalizzato sullo scambio di massa all'evaporatore al fine di incrementare il tasso di condensazione, facilitando la rimozione dell'acqua dall'aria di processo. Le caratteristiche della superficie alettata dell'evaporatore influenzano lo scambio di calore, lo scambio di massa e le perdite di carico dell'aria. In un'asciugatrice, la scelta della superficie che consente di ottenere una più rapida deumidificazione è fondamentale. A questo scopo, un'indagine sperimentale è stato intrapreso al fine di valutare l'impatto di diversi rivestimenti superficiali sull'efficienza dell'evaporatore durante il processo di deumidificazione. Gli studi in letteratura inerenti all'impatto di trattamenti della superficie alettata nei processi di deumidificazione sono limitati. Inoltre, dati sperimentali in condizioni di elevata umidità assoluta non sono disponibili in letteratura. Una galleria aerodinamica è stata progettata e costruita all' ITC-CNR di Padova per le indagini sperimentali. I primi test sono stati effettuati per caratterizzare il comportamento dello scambiatore di calore in assenza di deumidificazione. Successivamente, sono state condotte prove in deumidificazione per confrontare i risultati sperimentali con un modello di deumidificazione. Buone previsioni sono state ottenute utilizzando un modello di differenza media efficace entalpica (LMED) per prove con umidità assoluta di ingresso fino a 30 gv/kga; per valori maggiori, la differenza relativa tra i risultati sperimentali e quelli del modello aumenta. Ciò è dovuto da un'invalidazione di un'ipotesi del modello che pone il fattore di Lewis pari a uno; per tali prove è stato calcolato un fattore di Lewis pari a 0.5. Perciò, è stato considerato un modello alternativo, basato su una modifica del precedente (m-LMED). Questo modello include il valore del fattore di Lewis nel calcolo del coefficiente di scambio termico totale. Per i test con umidità assoluta di ingresso maggiore di 30 gv/kga sono state trovate differenze relative inferiori al 10% tra i risultati sperimentali e quelli del modello m-LMED. La maggior parte dell'attività sperimentale ha interessato lo studio dell'impatto dei trattamenti della superficie alettata sull'efficienza dello scambiatore in deumidificazione. Le prove sperimentali sono state caratterizzate da elevati valori di umidità assoluta di ingresso, maggiori di 40 gv/kga. Tre campioni aventi caratteristiche diverse delle alette sono stati analizzati. Il primo è caratterizzato dalla superficie in alluminio non trattato, il secondo da un rivestimento idrofilico ed un terzo da uno idrofobico. Sono stati effettuati confronti in termini di potenza termica scambiata, di tasso di condensazione e di peso dell'acqua ritenuta. Le prove in deumidificazione sono state condotte in condizioni stazionarie a diverse portate volumetriche dell'aria. Il campione idrofobico ha evidenziato i più bassi valori di potenza termica scambiata e di tasso di condensazione, ma i più elevati valori di peso dell'acqua ritenuta. D'altra parte, il campione non trattato ed il campione idrofilico hanno manifestato valori simili in tutte e tre le categorie di confronto, non evidenziando particolari differenze nel loro funzionamento in deumidificazione.

This dissertation explores the value of disclosure in sustainability reports. Sustainability reports are part of the information provided publicly by companies and may reveal information about the type of sustainability practices adopted by the company and extent of implementation. To this end, we explore (1) developed constructs using sustainability reporting, and (2) consistency with established sustainability performance measures. Till now, limited research has been conducted pertaining to the specific operational practices that companies are reporting on for the sake of developing a new measure of social and environmental sustainability out of them. Finally, (3) using the proposed measure, we explore links to financial performance and firm size. To meet these three research objectives, we first synthesize and obtain from the literature and relevant guidelines a list of operational practices for environmental and social sustainability. Next, content analysis of 331 sustainability reports is implemented. In particular, scoring is carried out on the identified environmental and social practices to see which of those are prioritized in companies’ sustainability reports. Based on the prevailing practices, we develop two constructs for social sustainability and three constructs for environmental sustainability. These constructs allow us to identify ‘leader’ and ‘laggard’ companies in four industrial sectors for comparison and provide illustrative text from their sustainability reports to demonstrate our scoring methodology. Second, we check consistency of our developed measure with existing measures of sustainability that are considered valuable. Specifically, we correlate our measure with Dow Jones Sustainability Index and Environmental Social and Governance data and find that all three measures are positively and significantly correlated with each other at the same level. Given the consistency between the three measures, we argue that our measure for sustainability performance is valuable and thus sustainability reporting appears to have some value. Finally, we explore the link between our developed measure with financial performance and firm size. Existing literature has extensively studied this relationship using established measures of sustainability performance, thus the results remain inconclusive. We revisit this relation by investigating whether our developed measure can shed light on that relationship. Structural equation modeling is performed, which indicates that there is not a significant relationship between our developed measure and financial performance, at least in the short term, as is consistent with similar research using ESG or other established measures. Thus, some aspects of sustainability but not all appear to be positively linked to financial performance. Also, to account for the industry effect, we are performing cluster analysis in four industrial sectors and identify upper and lower clusters, based on companies’ total sustainability disclosure score. Our analysis indicates sector specificity as regards the relationship between sustainability disclosure and financial performance based on the proposed instrument. Also, size expressed by revenues does not affect the measure we developed, as suggested by some of the literature.
