Streszczenie:
The aim of the study was to understand whether family businesses and non-family business differ from one another regarding green business and environmental issues. Green business issues are of global importance for the continued existence of business within the world. Businesses do not exist in isolation but within the context of the environment within which they function. Business has an impact on the environment and the environment has an impact on business. Furthermore, family businesses constitute a large part of the world economy and estimates range from 60-90 percent of GDP contributed by family businesses. In the South African context family businesses also form a significant part of the business environment. A literature study was conducted. The study identified five factors and considered each of these factors in the study. The five factors are: Green Business; Values; Stewardship; Succession; and, Stakeholders. In addition to a literature, primary research was conducted and data were collected by means of a questionnaire that collected data on the factors identified as well as some biographical information, including race, age and the sectors in which the respondents operated. The study’s findings correspond with the literature study, although no clear difference was found between family business and non-family business relating to green business and environmental issues. Family businesses do however believe that they are stewards of the environment and need to care for the environment.

Streszczenie:
Research purpose: Environmental issues have become a regular debate within social, business and political arenas. The need to combine social, environmental and economic systems to achieve a sustainable future (Triple Bottom Line), is gaining prominence within many international development projects. The study of traditional business Environmental Management Systems (EMS) leads to the observation that such systems place primary emphasis upon economic and environmental factors. The project begins with the proposal that an EMS built by an organisations employees' has a greater potential to identify practical environmental impacts and reduce social resistance to change. Methods: This thesis details the development of a seven-stage framework for environmental change referred to as Socio-Environmental Cohesion for Sustainability (SECS). The framework is trialled within a case study organisation (OrgX) using an interpretivist philosophy of social constructionism to guide the research. An action research project is conducted with the researcher acting as an observing participant of the change process. The developed framework follows a multimethodology design of organisational engagement, with strong emphasis placed upon the social values that can drive environmental management practices. The combination of cybernetic and social tools of organisational analysis is shown to provide a unique approach to environmental strategy design; Viable Systems Model, Team Syntegrity, Cultural Analysis, Social Network Analysis. Results: The Cultural and Social Network Analyses provide evidence of an informal environmental network (EWG) contained within OrgX, and identify the core social environmental values of the employee group. A Team Syntegrity workshop is performed and develops a bottom-up participatory approach to environmental strategy designs between the EWG and business management. Following the workshop, OrgX is shown to implement 56% of the developed environmental strategy within eight months. The Viable Systems Model is used to diagnose the organisations structure, which is then combined with the Social Network Analysis to establish the outreach of the EWG.Conclusions: The recognition of the informal environmental network as an official management committee, improvements to operational efficiency and practical benefits to onsite biodiversity, indicates that the SECS framework is capable of addressing all aspects of the Triple Bottom Line.

Ramsay, Sylvia L. "Hybrid Business Organisations' Lessons for Environmental Social Work". Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/404167.

Streszczenie:
This research project aimed to find ways to increase the capacity of social workers to improve environmental wellbeing by examining hybrid organisations. It is important that social workers act to increase environmental wellbeing because environmental systems are being placed under severe pressure from pollution, accelerated loss of biodiversity, soil loss and climate change (Dylan, 2012; Gray et al., 2017; IUCN, 2015; Steffen et al., 2015; Zapf, 2010). From perspectives that recognise the innate value of the natural world this damage is immoral but even from an anthropocentric perspective the damage to the environment is exacerbating environmental injustice and reducing the ability of humans to survive (Boetto, 2019; Jones, 2011; McKinnon & Bay, 2013). This research project used a multi-case study method framed through the ontological and epistemological lens of critical realism (Bergene, 2007; Bhaskar, 2016; Easton, 2010; O’Gorman & MacIntosh, 2015; Vincent & O'Mahoney, 2018). Based on the theory of social learning (Lysack, 2009; McLeod, 2013; Sundel & Sundel, 2005) it was expected that people would learn how to act in more environmentally beneficial ways through interaction with other people. Initially the theory of social learning did appear as the mechanism to cause change, however as more detailed analysis was undertaken, it was found that social learning was not the only mechanism. The term hybrid organisation has no strict definition and is applied broadly (Barraket et al., 2010; Raynolds et al., 2014; Sabeti, 2011) but for the purposes of this project, hybrid organisations are defined as non-government organisations seeking to achieve environmental and social benefits rather than maximising financial profit. The three hybrid businesses examined for this project; Food Connect – linking urban consumers with local sustainable farmers, Substation 33 – recycling e-waste and Running Wild – assisting long term unemployed, were able to achieve both environmental and social benefits. The study was successful in identifying activities hybrid organisations undertake to improve the wellbeing of the environment and identifying how these activities improve environmental outcomes. Factors that supported environmental wellbeing assisted participants to act in environmentally beneficial ways and by involving people in environmentally beneficial activities participants demonstrated changes in their beliefs and practices. As well as these enabling factors, many barriers to participation in environmentally beneficial activities were also identified. The findings were then assessed from a social work perspective and possible applications for social work were identified. Social workers could seek to add the successful practices demonstrated by hybrid organisations to social work to increase the environmentally beneficial outcomes of social work practice. It also appears that the skills and knowledge of social workers could be helpful in overcoming barriers to increasing environmental wellbeing. The compatibility of the hybrid model with social work appears strong, as tasks considered important in defining social work were being undertaken in hybrid businesses. Being able to realise social benefits while achieving environmental benefits, strengthens the case for adding the environmentally beneficial activities to social work practice. In addition, people with training in the profession of social work could make a useful contribution to any organisation seeking to implement a hybrid business model.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Historically organisations have had the "luxury" of being able to anticipate future developments and respond to them in good time due to, firstly, the comparatively slow pace of change and, secondly, the past being a relatively good predictor of the future. The second half of the 20th Century bears witness to some of the most dramatic changes and developments experienced by mankind. Most notable of these were globalisation, de-regulation, the emergence of the information/knowledge economy and, perhaps most significant of all, the changes brought about by the Internet. The underlying assertion of this report is that, given the current, complex, dynamic and sometimes volatile nature of changes in the external environment, in order to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage, organisations will be forced to consider carefully the dynamics of the environment in which they operate and to build their plans around these dynamics. This report briefly traces the evolution of strategic planning to its current status prior to providing a detailed analysis of the nature of environmental scanning and its applicability to strategic planning. The report provides a theoretical rerview of environmental scanning and a discussion of some of the tools and techniques of environmental scanning. Within this context the report provides a brief indication of the extent of the practice of environmental scanning within the financial services sector of South Africa. The conclusion assesses the findings of the current state of the practice of environmental scanning against the theory, with the view to providing an insight into the extent to which environmental scanning is applied in South Africa. Possible future directions of research and development of the practice are also identified.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The natural environment has gained intensified importance in recent years (Stern, 2007) as the depletion of free natural resources and creation of non-intentional by-products speeds up. Especially air quality-related issues such as carbon dioxide emissions caused by non-intentional by-products from fuel combustion intensify the pressure on nature and thereby on human beings. Global commitments to greenhouse reduction by different nations, manifested in the Kyoto Protocol, increase the pressure on the economic environment as they force nations and in particular companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to the agreed levels. This means that companies unable to meet the emission targets are forced to acquire additional emission rights. This has an impact on the value of a company. The lower the emissions, the more emission rights can be sold on the carbon markets. Furthermore, the less natural environmental risk a company is exposed to, the higher its value. In general, the risk reductions result from creating benefits for the natural environment. This research project shows how the natural environment impacts on the value of a company. It considers the green value, described as the overall tradable benefit from the reduction of non-intentional by-products, of a small liquid-petroleum-gas (LPG)-converting company. It is assumed that emission benefits created through the reduction of relevant marketable byproducts will lead to emission credit notes, equal to emission rights, offered to companies at the carbon spot market. This enables the companies participating on the carbon market to buy additional emission rights. This non-empirical report focuses on a study of the theory. Topics such as the global natural environment, awareness of natural environment and willingness to pay for higher quality of the natural environment, traditional valuation, and environmental accounting give an understanding of the subject. In addition, personnel communication was used to discuss relevant market expectations and prospects. The outcome is a valuation approach to determine the potential value of companies. The intention is to show that the value goes beyond a purely financial approach. From the valuation procedure performed one can easily see that the value of a company is strongly influenced by the green value component derived from valued environmental benefits.

Globalization and technological progress are the two issues influencing our lives to a great extent nowadays. Indeed, national borders between countries are blurring in terms of cultural differences. The information overflow around us is evident. Progressing convergence is making the Earth a homogeneous entity. This, in turn, might be perceived as desirable or harmful, depending on one’s standpoint; however, it is having a strong impact on the world of business, among others. This research investigates internationalization of two companies embedded in the clustered Swedish music industry. At first, the process is analyzed making use of many theoretical concepts in order to get a holistic picture, which results in an eclectic approach. Later on, the environment is studied to find out how it had determined the companies’ development, international potential and therefore foreign expansion. The result indicates congruent evidence that the companies’ successful rapid internationalization is derived from their embeddedness in the Swedish music environment. A strong synergetic relationship between networking, learning and resource acquisition is identified to be strongly enhanced by environmental conditions and its legacy. Therefore, competitive advantage in international markets of the globalized world is still locally embedded.   Keywords: SME’s internalization process, Toontrack AB, Propellerhead AB, Cluster, Environment, Swedish music industry, networks, born global, resources.

Streszczenie:
In the United States, citizens concerned with climate change and income inequity scrutinize the activities of corporations. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) have a critical role in business management, because stakeholders demand transparency in a company's operations. This correlation study, grounded in stakeholder theory, examined the relationship between environmental initiatives, CSR, and net profit for U.S. corporations. Participants included 96 companies with listing on either National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, or the New York Stock Exchange, or both, with and without evidence of CSR and environmental disclosures. The multiple regression analysis significantly predicted higher net profit for companies disclosing CSR information, with the statistical evidence demonstrating the importance of environmental and social responsibility, F(2,93) = 31.650, p = .00, R2 = .405. The environmental variable was not significant at p = .651, while the CSR variable proved significant at p = .04, indicating a need for organizations to participate in CSR activities. Recommendations for further research entail exploring the return on assets, net profit ratio, and return on equity. Implications of study findings for social change include support for companies to participate in global reporting organizations and CSR activities.

Corporate environmental responsibility has engaged the attention of academics, practitioners and environmentalists for some time, creating pressure for companies to conduct business in an environmentally greener manner. To find economic support for such conduct by South African companies, this study aims to investigate whether superior environmental performance by South African listed companies leads to superior financial performance. A review of related literature identified significant diversity in research approach and methodology as well as environmental and financial performance measures employed and therefore also in the results obtained. Given the continuing emergence of climate change as a material issue for business, this study utilised South African Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI SA) ratings as proxy for South African companies’ environmental performance. The infancy of the Carbon Disclosure Project in South Africa does result in some data limitations which necessitated a portfolio approach to address the research question. This approach, however, prevented explicit consideration or judgement on the direction of causality between environmental and financial variables. The environmental performance data limitations and the resulting need for some assumptions resulted in this study being explorative in nature. Using CDLI SA ratings as distinguishing environmental performance characteristic, industrymatching, mutually-exclusive stock portfolios were constructed. Relative portfolio performance was measured with reference to the Sharpe and Treynor ratios and a simple statistical test. Considering the three years 2008 to 2010, the Sharpe and Treynor ratios for Environmental Leaders and Laggards portfolios did not clearly identify either Environmental Leaders or Environmental Laggards as superior financial performers and results also varied across industries. There appears to be some trend emerging which sees Environmental Leaders outperforming Environmental Laggards in more recent years for some industries, however, the short time frame under consideration provided insufficient support for such conclusion. Statistical means testing concluded that the mean returns of Environmental Leaders and Environmental Laggards are similar. Sensitivity analysis performed on the Financials sector indicated that the Sharpe and Treynor ratios are sensitive to portfolio construction. Despite this sensitivity, statistical means testing consistently found little evidence to infer that the mean returns of Environmental Leaders portfolios are either higher or lower than that of Environmental Laggards portfolios. It is suggested that the similar performance of the Environmental Leaders and Environmental Laggards portfolios may be attributed to the use of an environmental performance measure unable to sufficiently distinguish between environmental leaders and environmental laggards. Another interpretation of the results could be that investors consider disclosure-based environmental performance measures as unreliable, or less reliable as compared with outcome-based or combined measures. Finally, it may be that investors’ expectations have not yet been adjusted to reflect the fact that climate change constitutes a materiality issue for business in the long run, which will require companies to actively manage carbon risks. Although there exists voluminous international research on the topic of this study, South African research in this regard is restricted. This study adds to the existing body of South African specific research, but is only explorative in nature; therefore areas for future research have been recommended.

Streszczenie:
Calls for the inclusion of sustainable development in the business curriculum have increased significantly in the wake of the financial crisis and increased concerns around climate change. This has led to the appearance of new initiatives and the development of new teaching approaches. This thesis explores business education at the upper secondary school level in Sweden following the inclusion of the concept of sustainable development in the curriculum. Drawing on poststructuralist discourse theory, the overarching purpose is to identify the roles of a responsible business person that are articulated in business education and to discuss how these roles could enable students to address sustainability issues. The thesis consists of four studies, based on textbook analyses, teacher interviews and classroom observations. Three categories of roles have been identified, implying that a business person is expected to either adapt to, add or create ethical values. These three categories are compared with the roles indicated in the environmental discourses constructed by Dryzek and the responsibility regimes developed by Pellizzoni. Drawing on Dryzek’s and Pellizzoni’s reasoning about which qualities are important for addressing sustainability issues, it is concluded that the roles identified in the studies could mean that students are unequipped (the adapting role), ill-equipped (the adding role) or better equipped (the creating role) to address uncertain and complex sustainability issues. The articles include empirical examples that illustrate how and in which situations specific roles are articulated, privileged or taken up. The examples also indicate how the scope for business students’ subjectivities are facilitated or hampered. It is suggested that the illustrative empirical examples could be used for critical reflection in order to enhance students’capabilities of addressing uncertain and complex sustainability issues and to improve educational quality in terms of scope for subjectivity.

With less than half a century's development, e-business and the Information and Communication Technologies it relies on, have been growing rapidly. With an even shorter history than the technology itself, the study of its impact on the environment and sustainable development in general, is still in its infancy. A review of past literature has revealed that the problem is complex. Both negative and positive impacts have been identified. Traditional systematic approaches have been found to be insufficient for this research topic. To explore the relationship further, a new methodology is proposed in this thesis. In particular the main objective of this PhD study is to demonstrate and develop an Expert Decision Support System at the meso level, to simulate the relationship between e-business and the environment. In pursuit of this aim, results are presented of two surveys that were conducted to collect data and build a knowledge base. Analysis of the data using various techniques was considered, based on data mining technologies and Fuzzy Logic. The development of the Expert Decision Support System is then discussed, adopting a two-way simulation approach. The forward chain of the system is developed based on Decision Support System technology, with the heart of the system built on Neural Networks. Calculation, estimation and prediction of environmental indicator values based e-business indicators are conducted in this part. The backward chain is based on Expert System technology, where conditions and rules are presented to reach certain pre-defined environmental targets. An individual company should then be able to use this system within a certain industry, for example, to simulate its environmental performance by adopting or limiting Information and Communication technologies. A demonstration of how the system can be used and operated on various occasions for different purposes is presented, based on four application scenarios: predictions, simulations, comparisons and solutions. It is claimed that the results from the Expert Decision Support System, which ideally should be integrated into a company's financial system and other information management systems, will provide important information that could be incorporated into a company's strategic plans, action plans and technological reformation. The research presents a pilot study which tries to not only build a quantitative model but also to construct a decision support system to simulate this relationship in the real world. It is claimed that the work both extends research methodologies in this field and endows traditional Neural Network applications with new meanings and challenges.

Streszczenie:
This qualitative and quantitative study examines governmental initiatives and business concepts as approaches to promote the export of environmental technology. Here, environmental technology refers to technologies (products, services, organizational models, and large-scaled technical systems) whose development and use actually provide or intends to provide a better environmental performance than their relevant alternatives from a life cycle perspective. Using literature reviews, surveys and interviews, this thesis collects primary and secondary data from national government level, private Swedish environmental technology firms and Swedish municipality-owned firms. Three main research questions guide this thesis. These questions address how different governments in selected countries promote the export of environmental technologies and how private Swedish environmental technology firms perceive the effectiveness of  governmental export promotion initiatives in realising export. In a complementary view, the thesis focuses on fundamental components of business concepts for export of environmental technologies by municipality-owned companies. These three units of analysis (i.e. – governmental initiatives, private companies and municipality-owned companies) are influenced by the characteristics of the environmental technology sector in Sweden. The main results from the study suggest three conclusions. First, governmental initiatives intended to promote the export of environmental technology are largely similar to approaches that intend to promote the export of “conventional” technology. These initiatives can be categorised as: financial aid programs, information programs, education and training programs, and trade mobility related programs. When it comes to perceived effectiveness of governmental promotion initiatives by private firms, results indicate that firms that accessed more than one type of governmental promotion, particularly those including financial support, perceived governmental promotion as contributing to realising export. For municipality-owned companies exporting environmental technology, the thesis proposes seven fundamental components of a business concept as: market (including regulation), finance, resources, activities, partnership (private-public partnership), ownership and responsibility, and legitimacy. Among these factors, regulation, public-private partnership, and legitimacy are particular to environmental technologies. These results suggest a dynamic balance between generic and tailored export promotion initiatives for environmental technology exporters, with much attention to program implementation as is given to program content formulation. The components proposed for municipality export opens up a potentially new research trajectory on environmentally conscious design that considers technological as well as non-technological changes based on large-scaled environmental technology systems for system-wide environmental improvements.

Ghana's mining sector is a significant contributor to the national economy; however, environmental degradation continues to stigmatize the sector. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore experiences and perspectives of middle managers on how to drive compliance with EPA regulations and standards in Ghana's mining sector. Ajzen's theory of planned behavior was the conceptual framework for this phenomenological study. A purposive sample of 20 middle managers from Ghana's mining sector participated in interviews, which were transcribed and then coded to generate common themes. The primary research question involved exploring factors that promote employee compliance in Ghana's mining sector. Three critical themes that emerged from the study were (a) business benefits of compliance, (b) factors that promote employee compliance, and (c) obstacles to compliance. The implications for positive social change include the potential for community members to experience reduced environmentally related health challenges with concomitant increases in their quality of life

Business leaders in the United States compete in a global marketplace for goods and services as well as in recruiting and retaining talented workers. The most experienced workers can usually be selective in choosing their employers. In 2000, awareness of corporate environmental issues began increasing substantially. Many prospective employees seek corporate leaders who are genuinely committed to running companies that focus on reducing negative environmental impacts. Business leaders have been increasingly using corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports to document their commitment to environmental responsibility. The purpose of this quantitative, experimental study was to examine working professionals' perceived attraction to a firm based on the level of credibility of the company's CSR report and whether any such effects differ based on employee qualification. Two hundred and eighty full time employees from two companies and members of a Department of Defense networking group completed the survey. Analysis of covariance, controlling for the effects of age and gender was used for evaluating the effects of the CSR status on attraction to a company. The results from this study indicate that an increase in credibility of a CSR report did not significantly relate to an increase in attraction to a company. In addition, the qualification level of the employee did not appear to have an influence on organizational attraction to a company that mentioned its corporate sustainability activities. This research contributes to theoretical research in organizational attraction and corporate environmental sustainability activities.

Streszczenie:
The long term profitability and sustainability of organisations is inextricably linked to the health of our natural environment (Redekop, 2010) yet their actions continue to both directly and indirectly impact upon the environment and the services it provides. Organisations need to ensure that they have access to the skills, competencies and knowledge needed to operate within the constraints that the environment imposes and to change their business practices to respond to challenges that are inevitable in the future. However, skills and attributes to initiate and support organisational environmental change remain ill defined (Quinn and Dalton, 2006; Van Velsor, 2009; Willard et. al., 2010; Christie et. al., 2013). This study addresses this research gap by evaluating the factors that influence the success of environmental manages as change agents within their organisations. Using semi-structured interviews with environmental managers in the Northeast of England, the study explores the mechanisms used by practitioners to bring about change, the barriers and enablers they experience and the skills, attributes, behaviours and values they believe to be important for success. In so doing, the study provides a practitioner perspective on organisational environmental change. Findings highlight the context specific nature of environmental change but point to a strong degree of commonality in the characteristics likely for success as an environmental manager. The importance of personal environmental concern, strong communication and people skills, a pragmatic approach to organisational change and strong organisational knowledge alongside environmental knowledge, are identified as important. The findings of the study have implications for the ways in which the environmental managers of the future are educated and supported through their professional development. Additionally, the study highlights the need for further effort by professional bodies to raise the profile of the environmental manager role and to promote the robust validation of competencies within the profession.

A multi-variate descriptive model of environmental and nature conservation attitudes and values is proposed and empirically supported. A mapping sentence is developed out of analysis of data from a series of Repertory Grid interviews addressing conservation employees' attitudes towards their profession's activities. The research is carried out within the meta-theoretical framework of Facet Theory. A mapping sentence is developed consisting of 9 facets. From the mapping sentence 3 questionnaires were constructed viewing the selective orientations towards environmental concern. A mapping sentence and facet model is developed for each study. Once the internal structure of this model had been established using Similarity Structure Analysis, the elements of the facets are subjected to Partial Order Scalogram Analysis with base coordinates. A questionnaire was statistically analysed to assess the relationship between facet elements and 4 measures of attitudes towards, and involvement with, conservation. This enabled the comparison of the relative strengths of attitudes associated with each facet element and each measure of conservation attitude. In general, the relationship between the social value of conservation and involvement pledges to conservation were monotonic; perceived importance of a conservation issue appearing predictive of personal involvement. Furthermore, the elements of the life area and scale facets were differentially related to attitude measures. The multi-variate descriptive model of environmental conservation values and attitudes is discussed in relation to its implications for psychological research into environmental concern and for environmental and nature conservation.

This dissertation sought to develop a grounded theory explaining how ENGOs assess the environmental performance of firms, select target industries and firms, and influence those targeted industries and firms. A preliminary model based on research in the fields of social movements, neo-institutional theory, stakeholder theory, and corporate social performance was developed. The model contained 21 propositions: seven regarding assessment, nine regarding targeting, and five regarding influencing. Interviews were conducted with 33 representatives of five ENGOs: Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Greenpeace, Environmental Defense (ED), World Resources Institute (WRI), and Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). NRDC and WRI served as pilot studies. NRDC, Greenpeace, and ED were considered case studies for the purpose of drawing inferences about the propositions. Insufficient interviews were conducted at WRI and UCS to draw inferences from them; however, data from these interviews was included in the dissertation to the extent it provided additional support for the inferences drawn. Qualitative methods were used to analyze the data. Results regarding the propositions were presented, as well as additional findings going beyond the propositions. A grounded theory of how ENGOs assess, target, and influence firms was developed based on the results; a model to accompany the grounded theory was also developed.

New information technologies can greatly impact the landscape of business and even entire industries. For some, these changes are both welcome and anticipated. For others, technology seems to cause more problems than it solves. The ability to interrelate technology and business strategy is what differentiates these two groups. Strategy, not technology, should guide the direction of the business. This thesis presents a simple set of current business frameworks for analyzing the business transformation effects of new information technologies. The analysis includes the five force method, value chain analysis, and Gary Hamel's business model. Both the five force method and the value chain analysis are from the work of Michael Porter. Next, the thesis introduces a case drawn from the Department of Public Works (DPW) in Arlington, Massachusetts. Currently, the water department in the DPW plans to install a new wireless data collection system and a new data analysis application. The new technologies allow the DPW to collect and analyze customer's meter readings more efficiently. Through the use of the above mentioned business analysis tools, this thesis explores the possible business transformation effects caused by the implementation of the new technologies. By examining the future effects, the town can make a more educated decision regarding when and how to implement the new IT systems. Also, the analysis may help to eliminate unexpected issues before they arise both during and after the implementation.

Business intelligence (BI) maturity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is significantly behind larger companies that utilize BI solutions. Successful data oriented business environments require knowledge and insight to understand organizational capabilities. This quantitative correlational study assessed the relationship between variables and BI solutions by examining the independent covariates (size and environment) on the dependent variable of BI maturity. In addition, the research examined the extent that BI maturity is leveraged as an organizational asset. Research questions selected for this study considered the relationship between enterprise size, environment, and SMEs’ BI maturity. Contingency theory was used to examine the relationship between variables, characteristics, and performance. A Qualtrics panel was used to distribute the BI maturity model survey to for-profit employers, with 1000 or fewer employees, located within the state of California. Respondents completed 102 surveys, which served as the data source. Descriptive analysis and chi-square were conducted on a sample size of 102. The results of the study revealed no significant relationship between the dependent and independent variables. While the domains of strategy and quality are findings in this research, this study found a significant relationship does not exist between either the organizational size, environment and SMEs’ BI maturity. Consideration of the implications that are found in this study apply to both covariances (size and environment). These findings strengthen the need for further SME BI research.

Streszczenie:
Studies of global environmental politics have not paid much attention so far to the role and views of the international business community. This thesis seeks to analyse how the business community has approached global environmental issues as discussed at the so-called 'Earth Summits' in 1992 and 2002. The specific focus is to address the question of how the international environmental discourses of business have changed from one summit to another. Are there sufficient empirical grounds to suggest that business is progressing towards a unified and cohesive set of discursive themes and issues? The method used combines qualitative discourse analysis with quantitative content analysis. Combining the 'best of' these two approaches means that a more detailed and rigorous analysis of the content of a large amount of material can be undertaken. This is applied to compare the business discourse at the 1992 Rio and the 2002 Johannesburg Earth Summits. These are two of the key events in the formation of international environmental politics discourses and provide an excellent opportunity to examine the changing role of business over time. The empirical results of this work reveal some continuity, but also major changes within the discourses used by business actors at mega earth summits. There is a high level of continuity not only in the commitment to free market principles but also in the notion that embracing sustainable development is good for business. Looking at changes over time, among the key findings is that business appears increasingly willing to reach accommodation with environmental non-governmental organisations and is keen to overcome its traditionally defensive, reactive role, adopting a proactive approach to shaping the international environmental agenda. While the main elements of a new master business environmental discourse were formulated in 1992, the new approach only become dominant afterwards. By 2002, the discourse had not only been refined and extended, but it had also achieved a much higher level of consensus with the business community taking an active part in the Johannesburg summit. The thesis concludes by discussing the significance of these findings in our understanding of the environmental role of business within global environmental debates.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Performance management systems are integral to many organisations. On all levels of management such performance measurements are used to drive a desired behaviour and business units, departments, as well as individuals are rewarded for meeting or exceeding set targets. In large silo-structured organisations, divisions are particularly focused on their own targets and responsibilities. This may result in a diminished view of the effect their strategies and processes may have on overall stakeholder value. These divisions execute strategies to enhance the achievement of their own goal. The execution of these strategies sometimes hampers other divisions in meeting their goals. The net effect of this hampering may result in reduced stakeholder value. A mechanism is needed through which organisational divisions can evaluate the systemic environment, in order to identify hampering processes. The case may be that their processes are hampering other divisions, or that their processes as such are being hampered. The main objective of this research study was to develop such a mechanism. This mechanism emerged through a framework which can be used during investigations of hampering processes. Such investigation is conducted by following six predefined steps to guide the investigator in identifying the hampering factors. This framework was developed by combining primarily three disciplines: Systems thinking, Performance evaluation and Supplier perceived value. The evaluation framework was validated through three case studies. In all of the cases the framework delivered the expected result. It is thus concluded that organisations can apply the framework to help identify systemic environmental factors that may hamper business processes.

The study explores a set of genre-hybrid reviews, 1999-2001, characterised by a standpoint of ecological rationality, and produced by a professional writer for a professional environmental management organisation. The interaction between such managers has not been studied before in terms of professional communication and was delineated as a new field of enquiry. The issues of tact and Face were important for this organisational community, which shared characteristics of contact communities and Communities of Practice. Methods used derive from studies of text in context, and organisational communication. The assembly of theoretical material is one outcome of the study, which tackled three questions: 1 To assess in what way the reviews made a contribution to the organisation, Weick's equivoque and the notion of the Fractal were combined to explain the text as an active organ for collaborative organisational learning and knowledge management. Thereby the texts are presumed to have contributed to the organisation's goal to enhance knowledge and practice in environmental management among managers drawn from diverse intellectual backgrounds. 2 To address the question of the technical characteristics of the reviews, narrative polyphony concepts provided suspension dialogia, which complemented the notion of translation suspension. 3 To address how the reviewer had managed to reproduce organisational patterns despite his inconsistent moral standpoint, the search for a theoretical position travelled through code-switching, pragmatics and translation, emerging with a concept similar to intersemiosis, labelled 'codehandling'. The combination of questions produced complex answers. Translation constructs, such as dynamic equivalence, increasingly emerged as productive and suitable to complement emerging endogenous approaches in environmental management literature. The genre-hybrid is argued to have altered the social function of the review. In prioritising interaction, it put at risk the organisation's strategic tact 10 structure. Nevertheless, the reviewer managed the risk within acceptable limits and produced popular and successful reviews.

The aim of this research was to explore how participants made meaning in an environmental education and training course for people from industry, business and local government in South Africa, and to identify and comment on any constraints to this meaning-making. I used a Symbolic Interactionist theoretical framework to explore and comment on the meaning-making process. I started my research by conducting a questionnaire to select participants for interviews. During the course the selected participants were interviewed, as well as the two course co-ordinators. Data was also gathered during the course from participant observation field notes ('captured talk'), photographs, participants' assignments and course evaluations. The data was analysed using an adapted form of discourse analysis and matrices. The research highlights that the opportunities provided on the course were adequate for encouraging meaning-making amongst both the co-ordinators and participants. However, recorded instances of meaning-making were low, which indicated that there were certain constraints during the meaning-making process. This research highlights and comments on identified constraints such as time and workplace support. The research supports similar findings which emerged from research conducted on the Gold Fields environmental education course for teachers and also offers recommendations for further research and practice into meaning-;making within the field of environmental education and industry, business and local government in South Africa.

In the last five years, the US has experienced a significant number of unprecedented events, many of which will have long-term impact on its business environment. Given this fact and the rapid pace of change in the world today, there is a new imperative for understanding and managing these complex dynamics and associated emergent risks. This dissertation, therefore, focused on analyzing the current state of the US business environment; the analysis creates a basis for further examination of the various aspects of the studied problems. The author undertook a comprehensive environmental scan, using a broad set of information resources, in order to look at its present status and the factors affecting it as well as the perceived level of risk. During this process, the author also attempted to verify whether the current method of PEST analysis is still a relevant and useful tool given today's complex, intertwined and quickly evolving global business environment. The first chapter is devoted to the theoretical background of information seeking and environmental analysis as well as classifying international business risks. Chapter two takes a broad look at the US macro economy, including the following areas: Political, Legal, Economic, Socio-Cultural and Technological. Chapter three is a business application, and the bulk of its content is devoted to the specifics of the current US business environment; the perceived risks affecting it are also investigated. Final conclusions are drawn based on the research conducted.

The country will have to find pioneering ways to address the poverty problems faced by a large proportion of its people, while still ensuring economic growth at a reduced cost to the environment. In an effort to promote the shift to a “green” economy, the South African state and its related entities have developed a number of incentive programmes aimed at easing the transition. These incentives primarily support businesses in their efforts to become more energy-efficient, or to convert to renewable energy sources. The objective of this study is to critically evaluate what the South African government is doing with regard to environmental instruments aimed at assisting the country to reduce carbon emissions. This case study follows a quantitative approach, considering the financial effects that the different environmental instruments could have on South African manufacturers. Through the study the researcher will be able to make certain recommendations to businesses in the manufacturing industry who are interested in investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The results of the study will also give the researcher insight into the South African environmental incentives, which will allow him to make informed comments on the proposals that government has tabled regarding future environmental taxes and incentives. The research questions that the researcher tried to answer were based on the current and future policy measures that the South African government has implemented, or will implement, in order to move the country to a low-emissions trajectory. These policies were then also compared to international measures in order to determine if the policies chosen by the South African government are appropriate for the this country’s economy. This study has led the researcher to discover a number of issues relating to the status of environmental policy in South Africa. These discoveries have allowed him to make certain recommendations to businesses investing in this realm, as well as to government which develops these policy measures. The main findings of the study are that with the assistance of the South African government and related entities, investments in renewable energy have become viable. When considering the current status of South African environmental policy, the researcher has also come to realise that the country is lagging behind the rest of the world with regard to policy development. The South African economy is unique, thus policies have to be structured in a way that will not be detrimental to the country.

Streszczenie:

This dissertation suggests that the greening of the corporate governance mechanisms—meaning efforts to tie executive compensation to environmental targets (incentive) and to enhance board responsibility over environmental performance (monitoring)—induces managers to comply with pressures to lower toxic emissions in the U.S. high polluting industries.

Although emphasis has been placed on the benefits of greater use of both incentive and monitoring mechanisms to improve corporate environmental performance, there is little consideration given to the potential costs associated with their implementation. I argue that mechanisms of incentive in the form of environmental compensation may serve as substitute of mechanisms of monitoring by the environmental board committee.

However, contrary to my expectations, results show that incentive and monitoring are positively associated. Nonetheless, I suggest that these mechanisms are most effective in improving environmental performance when adopted under specific circumstances of environmental risk. I found that the existence of environmental compensation is positively associated with firms' environmental risk. Furthermore, there is weak evidence showing that environmental board committees are more prevalent in firms that face conditions of moderate environmental risk.

This dissertation employs a panel regression model with random-effects. The sample consists of the S&P500 firms that are required to report toxic emissions to the Toxic Release Inventory, years 2006 to 2011. Data was collected from proxy statements, annual reports, and various other databases.
