Streszczenie:
Abstract Despite its economic relevance, the informal sector in Nigeria is plagued by occupational health and safety (ohs) anomalies. This study assessed ohs conditions among informal sector workers (isw s) operating in three Nigerian cities (Sokoto, Owerri and Port Harcourt). A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from a total of 717 isw s. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in data analysis. Logistic regression was used in predicting good ohs practices, based on gender, education level, occupation, health impairments and common health and safety practices. The findings show that many isw s have inadequate water sources and sanitary facilities and poor occupational health and safety practices. The overall model was statistically significant in predicting the likelihood of having good ohs practices. The study concludes that ohs conditions among isw s are poor as a result of insufficient water and sanitation facilities and poor environmental health practices. Improved water and sanitation provision and ohs awareness and education programmes for isw s, in line with their specific occupations and susceptibility to certain kinds of occupational health impairment, are recommended.

Streszczenie:
In recent years, the economy of enterprises has developed rapidly. Most enterprises focus on economic interests and ignore the occupational health of employees, resulting in an increase in the occupational morbidity rate of employees. Occupational insecurity of corporate employees will reduce the work efficiency of employees. In turn, it will affect the economic development of the enterprise. Paying attention to the occupational health and safety development of corporate employees is a necessary measure for corporate economic development. The main reasons that endanger the occupational health of employees are the unreasonable discharge of pollutants and the substandard treatment of pollutants. The sustainable environmental strategy of enterprise development can well control the risk factors that endanger the occupation of enterprise employees, and it is conducive to the health and safety development of enterprise employees and enterprises. This paper studied the impact of sustainable environmental factors on the occupational health and safety development of enterprise employees through the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and analyzed the impact on the occupation of enterprise employees according to the larger influencing factors. The experimental results showed that heavy metal wastewater, dust, hydrogen sulfide gas, and high-temperature radiation are the four most weighted impact indicators. Different concentrations of these four indicators are tested; when the concentration value of these impact indicators is low, it has little impact on the occupational safety and development of enterprise employees. However, when the concentration increases, the occupational safety and development of enterprise employees are seriously reduced. When the safety is the lowest, it is only 20%, and the development is only 23%. Carrying out sustainable environmental development can reduce the discharge of industrial waste; hence, while protecting the environment, the occupational health and safety and development potential of employees can be improved.

A joint China-U.S. symposium entitled “Integrating Occupational and Environmental Health” was organized by the Department of Science and Technology of Hebei Province, PRC, and the Department of Work Environment at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, U.S.A. A framework called “Sustainable Production” was proposed by U.S. participants to link environmental and worker protection. Sustainable production focuses on systems of production that integrate concerns for the long-term viability of the environment, worker health and safety, the community, and the economic performance of firms and other enterprises. The disciplines of environmental and occupational health and safety were brought together by Chinese participants under the unifying theme of the development, implementation, and impact of new technologies. As production processes are increasingly concentrated in China, collaboration among U.S. and Chinese environmental and occupational health and safety professionals is ever more essential.

Streszczenie:
The traditional theory of occupational safety has played an important role in promoting the development of occupational safety. Its use effectively reduced the number of casualties and saved thousands of lives. However, it turned out that the "margin effect" has become more and more obvious. World statistics show that the number of accidents at the workplace has dropped to a certain level and can no longer be reduced to zero. This means that it is necessary to search for new methods in theory that would help reduce the number of accidents. A review of recent articles in this field shows us new trends in the development of safety and safety at work. The Chinese study looked at the benefits of the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) in the construction industry. Safety-Related Data (SRDs) are important factors for making Safety Decision-Making (SDM) in a company. A systematic approach to risk assessment in the field of occupational safety and health is linked to a new process for identifying risk factors together with weighing the influence of these risk factors. For the weight of the factors in adverse events, a multi-criteria model is used to analyze the analytical hierarchy. Using appropriate Big Data processing, we can achieve more efficient forecasting of crisis events that lead to accidents at work.

Objective. The study objective was to conduct a systematic review of the effectiveness of integrated workplace interventions that combine health promotion with occupational health and safety. Data Source. Electronic databases (n = 8), including PsychInfo and MEDLINE, were systematically searched. Study Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria. Studies included were those that reported on workplace interventions that met the consensus definition of an “integrated approach,” published in English, in the scientific literature since 1990. Data Extraction. Data extracted were occupation, worksite, country, sample size, intervention targets, follow-up period, and results reported. Quality was assessed according to American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Practice Guidelines. Data Synthesis. Heterogeneity precluded formal meta-analyses. Results were classified according to the outcome(s) assessed into five categories (health promotion, injury prevention, occupational health and safety management, psychosocial, and return-on-investment). Narrative synthesis of outcomes was performed. Results. A total of 31 eligible studies were identified; 23 (74%) were (quasi-)experimental trials. Effective interventions were most of those aimed at improving employee physical or mental health. Less consistent results were reported from integrated interventions targeting occupational health and safety management, injury prevention, or organizational cost savings. Conclusion. Integrated approaches have been posed as comprehensive solutions to complex issues. Empirical evidence, while still emerging, provides some support for this. Continuing investment in, and evaluation of, integrated approaches are worthwhile.

This study identifies gender specific farm health and safety issues. Based on a sample from the 1988 New York Farm Family Survey, descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis were used to establish unique gender based profiles in terms of labor force participation, and prioritization of farm health and safety issues, concerns, and information sources. Based on the factor analysis, women's main farm health and safety issues included physical problems and occupational hazard screening needs, provider integrity, and economic incentives. Men's main issues consisted of accident related counseling needs, skin related hazards, and the farm related convenience of the services. Men and women had statistically significant differences in the types of information sources and reasons for using farm health and safety services. These differences imply that farm health and safety providers must consider both gender related information gathering and farm health and safety prioritizations to more efficiently allocate intervention resources, more effectively promote safety, and reduce the incidence of occupationally related morbidity and mortality in agriculture.

Streszczenie:
Mismanagement of mortuary waste is a significant risk factor for disease transmission. Quantitative estimation of mortuary waste generation is needed to estimate the potential risk and as a basis for any waste treatment, disposal and management plan. Bangladesh, a developing country, is an example where there has been no rigorous estimation of mortuary waste generation and associated risk factors based on a thorough scientific study. The present study used a statistically designed sampling method of waste generation in a broad range to identify the factors associated with public health and environmental safety. The data gathering techniques included observation, formal structured interview, informal dialogue, and waste weighing. The proportion of mortuary waste classified as hazardous by the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines was found to be high. The waste generation rate per dead body was found to be 9.00 ± 2.52kg and average waste generation per day was 918 ± 11kg among the surveyed mortuaries. Operatives dealing with the infectious waste were frequently found to be untrained, without even a basic understanding of the hazards involved. Personal protective equipment was inadequate in most cases, which led to frequent accidental injuries. None of the mortuaries were found to have adequate storage facilities for dead bodies as well as hazardous waste in the context of environmental health and safety. Hazardous waste was dumped into city corporation bins, and disposed of on general landfill sites. As well as exposing the waste to the environment, this could potentially contaminate ground water, soil and sediments, especially as the dumps were located in areas subject to frequent flooding. The significant factor of health and environmental risk was identified as decomposition of dead bodies. The degree to which dead bodies are decomposed is related to the time taken to bring them to the mortuary and to the duration of the autopsies. The delay was due to poor communication, low level of interest, transportation cost, and trying to avoid social harassment. This is the first study to attempt this type of thorough estimation of mortuary waste and assessment of risk on environmental health occupational safety.

Effective supervision of workplaces in terms of occupational health and safety contributes significantly to the prevention of occupational accidents in many developed countries. The Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, which entered into force in 2012 in Turkey, brought obligations to employers and employees on the subject. However, the extent to which employers and employees fulfill their responsibilities arising from the Law and related Regulations has often had to be left to the initiative of the parties, due to the insufficient number of occupational health and safety inspections carried out by the Guidance and Inspection Board. One of the important reasons why the occupational health and safety policies implemented in line with the ILO conventions and EU directives in Turkey cannot achieve the desired success in practice is the insufficient number of occupational health and safety inspections carried out in enterprises. In this study, first of all, the general view of work accidents in Turkey, work accidents occurring in risky sectors over the years and deaths as a result of work accidents will be examined. Afterwards, evaluations will be made by the Presidency of the Guidance and Inspection Board by including the number of inspections carried out in the workplaces over the years. Farming is a hazardous occupation with a unique combination of exposures and psychosocial factors that often vary with the type of operation. Some hazards are unique to farming; others are common in industry. Many who farm also work at other jobs. Even for non-agricultural companies, farm related illnesses and injuries can be costly in terms of lost work time, medical insurance, and life insurance. According to a former U.S Surgeon General, “Because of agriculture's diversity and geographic distribution, we must depend on local action to deal practically with the problem” (Novello, 1991). Occupational health nurses in both agricultural and non-agricultural industries can play an important role in local action to protect their workers, neighbors, friends, and families.

As this short history of occupational safety and health before and after establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) clearly demonstrates, labor has always recognized perils in the workplace, and as a result, workers’ safety and health have played an essential part of the battles for shorter hours, higher wages, and better working conditions. OSHA’s history is an intimate part of a long struggle over the rights of working people to a safe and healthy workplace. In the early decades, strikes over working conditions multiplied. The New Deal profoundly increased the role of the federal government in the field of occupational safety and health. In the 1960s, unions helped mobilize hundreds of thousands of workers and their unions to push for federal legislation that ultimately resulted in the passage of the Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. From the 1970s onward, industry developed a variety of tactics to undercut OSHA. Industry argued over what constituted good science, shifted the debate from health to economic costs, and challenged all statements considered damaging.

This research aimed to describe the implementation of occupational safety and environmental health (OSEH) learning by teachers in the construction and property technology expertise programme. This research was conducted at five Indonesian vocational high schools that held the construction and property technology expertise programme. The population of this research was all vocational high school students in South Sulawesi province. Based on the cluster random sampling technique, five schools were selected to be the research sample with a total of 270 students. The results showed that the implementation of OSEH learning was carried out extremely well by the teachers in all of the schools under study. However, only 20% of the students had adequate OSEH knowledge, which indicates the need for the improvement of their knowledge. While the students’ attitudes towards the implementation of OSEH were generally good, they reported that their schools lacked personal protective equipment to be used during their practicum, thereby showing the need for more facilities. Streszczenie:
Occupational and environmental health advocates promote the potential of alliances between workers and community members to address shared health problems resulting from industrial processes. Advocates recognize the need to overcome job blackmail, which has successfully pitted these groups against one another by threatening job loss in the face of calls for improved standards. This strategic form of issue management represents a dualism between good health and clean environments on one hand and jobs and tax bases on the other. The author argues that overcoming job blackmail requires attention not only to this dualism, but to the broader social construction of occupational and environmental health. The article describes a series of oppositional constructions, in both strategic organizational rhetoric and everyday cultural discourse, which reinforces job blackmail and impedes the development of solidarity among workers, neighbors, and environmental advocates. These dualisms polarize our views of work and environment, science, and social identity, thereby producing barriers to coalition formation. Understanding these reifications helps to build an activist agenda and identify potential resources for organizing to overcome these barriers.
