Streszczenie:
Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are widely used for the navigation of land vehicles. However, the positioning accuracy of GNSS, such as the global positioning system (GPS), deteriorates in urban areas due to signal blockage and multipath effects. GNSS can be integrated with a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)–based inertial navigation system (INS), such as a reduced inertial sensor system (RISS) using a Kalman filter (KF) to enhance the performance of the integrated navigation solution in GNSS challenging environments. The linearized KF cannot model the low-cost and small-size sensors due to relatively high noise levels and compound error characteristics. This paper reviews two approaches to employing parallel cascade identification (PCI), a non-linear system identification technique, augmented with KF to enhance the navigational solution. First, PCI models azimuth errors for a loosely coupled 2D RISS integrated system with GNSS to obtain a navigation solution. The experimental results demonstrated that PCI improved the integrated 2D RISS/GNSS performance by modeling linear, non-linear, and other residual azimuth errors. For the second scenario, PCI is utilized for modeling residual pseudorange correlated errors of a KF-based tightly coupled RISS/GNSS navigation solution. Experimental results have shown that PCI enhances the performance of the tightly coupled KF by modeling the non-linear pseudorange errors to provide an enhanced and more reliable solution. For the first algorithm, the results demonstrated that PCI can enhance the performance by 77% as compared to the KF solution during the GNSS outages. For the second algorithm, the performance improvement for the proposed PCI technique during the availability of three satellites was 39% compared to the KF solution.

ABSTRACT Organizations are adopting team-based structures to promote cooperation and coordination of actions and, thus, enhance performance (Libby and Thorne 2009; Chenhall 2008). However, team-based structures do not automatically improve performance. The economics literature suggests that working in teams may impair performance because of the potential conflict between individual and group incentives. In contrast, the organizational behavior literature argues that working in teams may enhance performance via members' collectivist cognitive orientation. This paper analyzes how both the economic incentive system and the team's predominant (individualist or collectivist) cognitive orientation affect team performance. We conduct an experiment with postgraduate students. Our results show that enhanced team performance is positively related to both individual economic incentives and predominately collectivist orientation in the team, and that the effectiveness of any incentive system design seems to be related to the team's predominant cognitive orientation.

A turbocharger is fitted to a diesel in order to enhance the inlet charge pressure, hence increasing the fresh air in the cylinder, then more fuel can be injected into the cylinder and sequentially more engine power can put out. The electrical aided turbocharged system is a mechanism adding a high speed electronic motor into a turbocharger shaft. The electronic motor can work as a motor to drive the turbocharger shaft and as a generator to generate electricity energy to storage energy. According to certain constraint conditions, the controlling strategy of the hybrid turbocharged system is presented. The simulation results about key work points reveal that controlling the turbocharged engine following the strategy can enhance the engine performance.

Transcritical CO2 refrigeration system is coupled with the single effect vapour absorption with LiBr-water as a working pair having an objective to enhance the performance of low temperature transcritical refrigeration system while using natural working pair and to reduce the electricity consumption to produce low temperature refrigeration. The high grade waste heat rejected in the gas cooler of tc-CO2 compression refrigeration system (TCRS) is utilized to run the single effect vapour absorption system (SEVAR) to enhance the energy efficiency of the system. The gas cooler in the transcritical CO2 system is having heat energy at high temperature and pressure, which is utilized to run the vapour absorption system, while the other refrigerant heat exchanger provides subcooling to further enhance the performance. The combined cycle can provide refrigeration temperature at different levels, to use it for different applications. Energetic and exergetic analysis have been done to analyze the combined system to compute the performance parameters and the irreversibilities occurring in different components to further increase the performance. The combined system is optimized for various heat rejection and refrigeration temperatures. The COP of the combined system has been enhanced by to 24.88% while the enhancement in exergetic efficiency (ηex) is observed as 10.14% respectively over tradition transcritical CO2 compression refrigeration system, with -10°C as an evaporation (TCRS cooling) temperature and exit temperature of gas cooler T4 being 40°C. The consensus problem has become a key issue in the field of collaborative telemedicine systems because of the need to guarantee the consistency of shared data. In this paper, we focus on the performance of consensus algorithms. First, we studied, in the literature, the most well-known algorithms in the domain. Experiments on these algorithms allowed us to propose a new algorithm that enhances the performance of consensus in different situations. During 2014, we presented our very first initial thoughts to enhance the performance of the consensus algorithms, but the proposed solution gave very moderate results. The goal of this paper is to present a new enhanced consensus algorithm, named Fouad, Lionel and J.-Christophe (FLC). This new algorithm was built on the architecture of the Mostefaoui-Raynal (MR) consensus algorithm and integrates new features and some known techniques in order to enhance the performance of consensus in situations where process crashes are present in the system. The results from our experiments running on the simulation platform Neko show that the FLC algorithm gives the best performance when using a multicast network model on different scenarios: in the first scenario, where there are no process crashes nor wrong suspicion, and even in the second one, where multiple simultaneous process crashes take place in the system.

During recent years, various researches have been done to improve combustion process and through that, increasing the fuel economy of diesel engines of heavy truck. However, the controlled thermal management system has not been significantly employed for further reduction of specific diesel oil consumption and increase of truck mileage. Approximately 30% of fuel supplied energy is rejected to the ambient via cooling system which place massive demands for advanced design cooling systems to realize greater engine thermal efficiency. Advanced thermal management system can reduce the fuel consumption, pollutant emissions, warm up time, and enhance overall engine performance. This paper presents a control strategy which enhances the operational performance of the diesel truck using thermal management on two different real driving cycles. Firstly, the cooling system model was validated with experimental data, and then replaced with an advanced controlled thermal management system using a 1-D simulation model. A parametric study is performed using the developed model to examine the effects of advanced control thermal management system on the truck performance. The criteria for selecting the optimum pump speed, fan speed and the valve lift depend on the real truck thermal state to minimize parasitic and pumping losses and the total amount of heat rejected to the ambient. The analysis of the preliminary results indicates that the controlled strategy can reduce the parasitic losses, enhance fuel economy and reducing packing requirements.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between balanced scorecard (BSC) attributes and quality performance and the possible moderating effect of quality performance on the relationship between BSC and business performance. The positive findings from the multinational pharmaceutical organisations in Egypt may help the national pharmaceutical companies to improve their performance when incorporating the same tool (BSC) in their quality management system. Design/methodology/approach This research employs a quantitative approach to conduct a survey, and empirical data were drawn from 28 multinational pharmaceutical organisations in Egypt, 125 correct questionnaires were used for further analysis, and the research model was tested using the structural equation modelling technique by analysis of moment structures software. Findings The findings of the empirical research reveal that the BSC attributes significantly and positively relate to quality performance where strategy translated to operations has the strongest relationship, providing feedback/learning and communication have a moderate relationship, whereas alignment relation is negligible in the presence of other attributes. Additionally, BSC attributes have a significant positive relationship with business performance directly and indirectly and quality performance is the moderator. Also, the research suggests that the quality performance has a significant and positive relationship with business performance. Research limitations/implications The overall research implication is that the BSC certainly acts as a ground foundation for consolidating the quality management system. The BSC practices presented in this research emphasise that this tool is not just an integration of financial and non-financial metrics that measure performance; rather, it is a performance management system that reinforces the quality system and helps to harmonise the strategy and goals that leads to improvement in the performance levels. Practical implications The study shows that BSC practices support the organisational quality/business performances. Therefore, managers must develop and continuously refine their strategies, allocate sufficient resources for achieving targets of strategic measures, in order to achieve superior business performance. Originality/value Several studies approached the effect of some of BSC attributes on quality performance; yet, this research considers the association between the four attributes collectively with quality/business performance. Additionally, no previous research has comprehensively studied the moderating effects of quality performance on the relation between BSC and business performance, especially in pharmaceutical companies in Egypt.

Abstract Soft Microgel (SMG) used to enhance oilfield recovery is a kind of aqueous dispersion chemical agent system of microgel particles. It is usually used in medium and low permeability reservoirs and is generally not used for plugging large pores of reservoirs due to the limitation of particle size. To resolve the problem that SMG cannot effectively block large pores of the reservoir, the multi-functional system (SMG-w) can be synthesized by introducing inorganic components into SMG under special conditions. The main physical and chemical properties of SMG-w are carried out in the laboratory. The results of the study show that SMG-w has an excellent resistant ability to temperature and salinity. Besides, it can also decrease the interfacial tension of oil and water. What’s more, it can react with Ca2+ or Mg2+ in formation water from a large number of flocs in the high salinity reservoir, which can enhance physical and chemical properties of SMG-w and make it be applied in deep profile control of high permeability reservoirs with high temperature and high salinity.

This study identified the causes of insufficient emergency interconnected operation (EIO) performance, such as pressure-related problems and connection problems caused by elevation differences between blocks, the characteristics and locations of emergency interconnection pipes (EIPs), and pumps. Then, it tested four strategies to improve the EIO performance, including increasing the EIP diameter or installing additional EIPs, pressure reducing valves (PRVs), or pumps. The advanced pressure-driven analysis model was applied to quantify the EIO performance improvement achieved using these strategies. Further, these strategies were tested in a real water distribution system. To solve the low-pressure problem, the EIP diameter was increased and an additional pump was installed; the former did not significantly improve, whereas the latter improved supply by 20–30%. To solve the high-pressure problem, PRVs were installed to maintain the EIO performance effectively. To solve connection problems, new EIPs were installed. Although this improved the supply performance, the installation of pumps was recommended to overcome elevation differences. The proposed strategies should contribute to the allocation of facilities such as EIPs, pumps, and PRVs for realizing effective EIO.

In this paper, we propose a novel method to enhance the accuracy of a real-time ocean forecasting system. The proposed system consists of a real-time restoration system of satellite ocean temperature based on a deep generative inpainting network (GIN) and assimilation of satellite data with the initial fields of the numerical ocean model. The deep learning real-time ocean forecasting system is as fast as conventional forecasting systems, while also showing enhanced performance. Our results showed that the difference in temperature between in situ observation and actual forecasting results was improved by about 0.5 °C in daily average values in the open sea, which suggests that cutting back the temporal gaps between data assimilation and forecasting enhances the accuracy of the forecasting system in the open ocean. The proposed approach can provide more accurate forecasts with an efficient operation time.

This paper will discuss and demonstrate how FACTS controllers shunt Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Static VAR Compensator (SVC) have successfully been applied to power system for effective regulating system voltage. One of the major reasons for installing a STATCOM or SVC is to improve dynamic voltage control and thus increase system load ability. In this paper a STATCOM and SVC are used to regulate voltage in a power system. When system voltage is low they generate reactive power (capacitive). When system voltage is high they absorb reactive power (inductive). In this paper comparison is also performed between SVC and STATCOM under fault condition and it is show that STATCOM have the ability to provide more capacitive power during a fault over SVC. All the simulations for the above work have been carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

PurposeThis paper aims to present the development of a knowledge-based system (KBS) to support the implementation of Lean Six Sigma (L6s) principles applied to enhance quality management (QM) performance within a health-care environment. Design/methodology/approachThe process of KBS building has been started by acquiring knowledge from experts in field of L6σ and QM in health care. The acquired knowledge has been represented in a rule-based approach for capturing L6σ practices. These rules are produced in IF […].THEN way where IF is the premise and THEN is the action. The produced rules have been integrated with gauging absence pre-requisites (GAP) technique to facilitate benchmarking of best practice in a health-care environment. A comprehensive review of the structure of the system is given, detailing a typical output of the KBS. FindingsImplementation of L6s principles to enhance QM performance in a health-care environment requires a pre-assessment of the organisation’s competences. The KBS provides an enhanced strategic and operational decision-making hierarchy for achieving a performance benchmark. Research limitations/implicationsThe KBS needs validation in real health-care environment, which will be done in Oman’s hospitals. Practical implicationsThe paper is intended to benefit QM practitioners in the health-care sector during decision-making to achieve performance improvement against a best practice benchmark. Originality/valueThis research presents a novel application of a hybrid KBS with GAP methodology to support the implementation of L6s principles to enhance QM performance in a health-care environment.

Streszczenie:
Recently, buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) have been widely implemented as seismic load resistance systems in buildings to enhance their response against dynamic vibration. However, during catastrophic earthquakes, the steel core in BRB devices fully yields, which causes the BRB to lose its functionality. While the incorporation of various filler materials, such as new high-performance concretes, has the potential to enhance the performance of buckling-restrained braces (BRBs), there remains a notable gap regarding comprehensive research investigating this aspect. Therefore, this study assessed the effect of implementing ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPFRC) as filler material on BRB behavior. For this purpose, the finite element model for the proposed BRB was developed and hysteresis analysis results under incremental cyclic loads were investigated. Then, the prototype of a BRB with UHPFRC concrete was cast and experimentally tested under cyclic loads by using a dynamic actuator. Based on the testing results, a new design for a BRB device named as rubber buckling-restrained brace (RBRB) was developed, implementing hyperelastic rubber components between the steel core and UHPFRC as an additional load-bearing mechanism to enhance the device vibration dissipation capacity. Subsequently, a finite element model of the newly proposed rubber buckling-restrained brace (RBRB) was developed to assess the device’s performance. The analysis results demonstrate a notable enhancement in load capacity and energy dissipation for the RBRB device compared to conventional BRBs.

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices, which can break the Shockley–Queisser limit (33.7%) and enhance the thermal energy utilization efficiency, have garnered increasing attention in recent decades. Structuring the emitter surface has been demonstrated to be powerful for tailoring thermal emission to enhance the power density and system efficiency of a TPV system. However, the design and optimization of the broad parameters of the surface nanostructures manually remain to be thorny issues. In this paper, the Bayesian algorithm under the framework of material informatics was coupled with a rigorous coupled wave analysis to optimize the geometry of the infrared grating nanostructure to achieve wavelength-selective emission to boost the TPV performance. It is demonstrated that only less than 0.173% of the total candidate structures were calculated to find out the optimal structure with high spectral emittance in the range of 0.3–1.708 μm, and the power density and system efficiency of the TPV system were enhanced to 4.20 W/cm2 and 35.37%, respectively. The present machine-learning-based optimization of a multi-parameter nanostructure can improve the performance of the TPV system significantly and can be extended to other physical fields in a feasible manner.

A hybrid anaerobic solid – liquid (HASL) system was developed to enhance food waste bioconversion in comparison with the conventional two-phase anaerobic digester. The advantages of the HASL system were the higher efficiency of methane production and smaller volume of effluent from the system. The biogas, which was generated from the methanogenic phase, had an average methane content of 71–72%. Total removal of volatile solids consisted of 78–80%. The HASL system can be operated in both batch and semi-continuous modes with satisfactory performance. The addition of a submerged biofilter for ammonia removal to the HASL system further enhanced the performance of anaerobic digestion. Methane production in the enhanced HASL system was increased by 26% in comparison with the HASL system without submerged filter. This paper describes the development of the enhanced HASL system for anaerobic treatment of food waste.

In an intelligent smart city like Sejong city in Korea, automatic and smart software is absolutely necessary for autonomous traffic and vehicles control systems. Therefore, these systems need to have an accurate and timely performance; otherwise, safety issues may arise. To resolve this, we propose our code visualization approach to adapt an object-oriented smart traffic control simulator, which analyzes Java code’s complexity and identifies bad codes against performance. To achieve an accurate performance, we must repeatedly perform refactoring until attaining a range of system-defined performances through effective code visualization. As a result, we enhance the code complexity of the cyber-physical system-based software to achieve the exact performance. With this approach, we expect to obtain an accurate performance and complexity improvement of the object-oriented traffic control simulator without significant power consumption.

SUMMARYThe enhanced dexterity and manipulability offered by master–slave teleoperated surgical systems have significantly improved the performance and safety of minimally invasive surgeries. However, effective manipulation of surgical robots is sometimes limited due to the mismatch between the slave and master robots’ kinematics and workspace. The purpose of this paper is first to formulate a quantifiable measure of the combined master–slave system manipulability. Next, we develop a null-space controller for the redundant master robot that employs the proposed manipulability index to enhance the performance of teleoperation tasks by matching the kinematics of the redundant master robot with the kinematics of the slave robot. The null-space controller modulates the redundant degrees of freedom of the master robot to reshape its manipulability ellipsoid (ME) towards the ME of the slave robot. The ME is the geometric interpretation of the kinematics of a robot. By reshaping the master robot’s manipulability, we match the master and slave robots’ kinematics. We demonstrate that by using a redundant master robot, we are able to enhance the master–slave system manipulability and more intuitively transfer the slave robot’s dexterity to the user. Simulation and experimental studies are performed to validate the performance of the proposed control strategy. Results demonstrate that by employing the proposed manipulability index, we can enhance the user’s control over the force/velocity of a surgical robot and minimize the user’s control effort for a teleoperated task.

PurposeEffective cooling is one of the challenges for photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems to maintain the PV operating temperature. One of the best ways to enhance rate of heat transfer of the PVT system is using advanced working fluids such as nanofluids. The purpose of this research is to develop a numerical model for designing different form of thermal collector systems with different materials. It is concluded that PVT system operated by nanofluid is more effective than water-based PVT system.Design/methodology/approachIn this research, a three-dimensional numerical model of PVT with new baffle-based thermal collector system has been developed and solved using finite element method-based COMSOL Multyphysics software. Water-based different nanofluids (Ag, Cu, Al, etc.), various solid volume fractions up to 3 per cent and variation of inlet temperature (20-40°C) have been applied to obtain high thermal efficiency of this system.FindingsThe numerical results show that increasing solid volume fraction increases the thermal performance of PVT system operated by nanofluids, and optimum solid concentration is 2 per cent. The thermal efficiency is enhanced approximately by 7.49, 7.08 and 4.97 per cent for PVT system operated by water/Ag, water/Cu and water/Al nanofluids, respectively, compared to water. The extracted thermal energy from the PVT system decreases by 53.13, 52.69, 42.37 and 38.99 W for water, water/Al, water/Cu and water/Ag nanofluids, respectively, due to each 1°C increase in inlet temperature. The heat transfer rate from heat exchanger to cooling fluid enhances by about 18.43, 27.45 and 31.37 per cent for the PVT system operated by water/Al, water/Cu, water/Ag, respectively, compared to water.Originality/valueThis study is original and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. This paper introduces system comprehensiveness, a variable reflecting the diversity of performance measurement (PM) categories captured in a PM system. Using this variable, we synthesize the information systems and management accounting literatures into an integrated model of PM systems. Based on survey responses from 646 experienced financial managers, our integrated model results provide evidence that system comprehensiveness partially explains how participation leads to job-relevant information. Furthermore, our findings indicate that system comprehensiveness is associated with employee outcomes through the mediating effect of jobrelevant information. These results suggest that organizations benefit from PM systems that incorporate a broader set of measures. Also, by linking the two research streams, this paper provides a richer understanding of how participation improves employee outcomes. Along this line, we identify a variety of future research opportunities that, if approached from a cross-disciplinary perspective, could further enhance our understanding of PM systems.

The outsole of a running shoe must provide enough traction for the athlete to avoid slipping during running. What is unknown is whether there is any point to designing running shoe outsoles with traction above this minimum required traction. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether performance could be enhanced by increasing the outsole traction of a running shoe. A commercially available running shoe (Control) was compared against the same shoe model with the outsole modified with a higher traction rubber (High Traction). The available traction of each shoe was measured with a traction testing system. Twenty male athletes completed a maximal effort timed running course in both shoes on two different surfaces. When wearing the Control running shoe, the athletes were able to complete the course on an asphalt road surface at maximal effort without slipping. When completing the same course wearing the High Traction shoe, the subjects were able to perform the course even faster. Therefore, the results show that the role of running shoe outsole traction is not to merely provide adequate traction to avoid large scale slips, but can also help athletes enhance performance of high-traction tasks such as accelerations and changes in direction.

Streszczenie:
Redundancy techniques have been extensively utilized to enhance the reliability of engineering systems. There are three different types of standby techniques, cold, hot, and warm. Warm standby is adopted for less energy consumption and shorter leading time compared with hot standby and cold standby, respectively. Besides redundancy, performance sharing is another strategy to enhance system reliability, where the subsystems with sufficient performance can share the surplus performance with other subsystems with deficient performance. This article considers a demand-based warm standby system with a common bus performance-sharing mechanism, where the subsystems can share performance through the common bus and each subsystem can be configured with warm standby components in order to meet its demand. To be more general, the imperfect switching for the activations of warm standby components is also considered. Moreover, the multi-valued decision-diagram technique is developed to analyze the reliability for the proposed model. The proposed technique can handle systems whose time-to-failure distributions can follow arbitrary distributions in addition to the common utilized exponential distributions. Numerical studies are provided to validate the proposed model and technique.

Adaptive assistive control for a haptic interface system is proposed in the present paper. The assistive control system consists of three subsystems: a servo controller to match the response of the controlled machine to the virtual model, an online identifier of the operator’s control characteristics, and a variable dynamics control using adaptive mechanism. The adaptive mechanism tunes an impedance of the virtual model for the haptic device according to the identified operator’s characteristics so as to enhance the operator’s control performance. The adaptive law is derived by utilizing a Lyapunov candidate function. Using a haptic interface device composed by axy-stage, an effectiveness of the proposed control method was evaluated experimentally. As a result, it was confirmed that the operator’s characteristics can be estimated sufficiently and that performance of the operation was enhanced by the variable dynamics assistive control.

This paper proposes a feedback system that is based on the self-evaluation of perceived productivity as a mechanism for detecting deviations in an engineering design student project. By monitoring key performance indicators, project members used feedback loops to recognize alarming patterns and act accordingly. The study is based on descriptive survey data that addressed three factors of influence: perceived productivity, perception of stage completion, and work-activity distribution. The productivity data was analysed by detecting patterns in the form of peaks and lows and by combining the patterns with qualitative data from observations and documented work activities. Measurements were taken every time the project team got together; 33 occasions during the course of the project, resulting in a total of 280 student responses for productivity (P) and completion (C) and 115 student replies for work activity distribution. The findings provide an extraction of peak values and low values that enables tracking of critical incidents. Through an in-depth activity log, each value was enriched with lessons learned about what took place and the consequences for the project, thus enhancing learning from past activities through systematic feedback sessions. The accumulated set of data provided distinguishable patterns for the project team to interpret. Over time this made student actions more proactive, activity execution more distinct and purposeful, and resource allocation in combination with feedback reflections more refined.

VLIW DSPs can largely enhance the Instruction-Level Parallelism, providing the capacity to meet the performance and energy efficiency requirement of sensor-based systems. However, the exploiting of VLIW DSPs in sensor-based domain has imposed a heavy challenge on software toolkit design. In this paper, we present our methods and experiences to develop system toolkit flows for a VLIW DSP, which is designed dedicated to sensor-based systems. Our system toolkit includes compiler, assembler, linker, debugger, and simulator. We have presented our experimental results in the compiler framework by incorporating several state-of-the-art optimization techniques for this VLIW DSP. The results indicate that our framework can largely enhance the performance and energy consumption against the code generated without it.
