English poetry is a treasure house of the English national thoughts, a poet expressing his feelings and thoughts about nature, society and life, and an important means for English learners to know English culture. English poetry, as a common style, has its own stylistic features, such as paying attention to the beauty of rhyme and rhythm. The appreciation and study of English poetry is usually carried out from the perspective of aesthetics or literature. Of course, some literary theorists also emphasize the pragmatic purposes of poetry, such as enlightenment, pleasure, imitation, self-expression, etc. In view of the textual features and pragmatic effects of poetry, this paper will analyze the pragmatic effects and appreciation of the English poem "Dwelling in the woods on a snowy night" from the perspective of deixis in pragmatics.

The influence of British literature on global literature is enormous. In so many ways, British literature has influenced world literature. The Anglo-Saxon period established the British literature tradition, which continues to influence world literature today. In this blog post, we will look at various aspects of British literature's influence on global literature. The study of literary works from the United Kingdom and other countries around the world is known as British and world literature. It includes classic and contemporary works, often translated into English, that reflect regional and historical cultural and social norms. Individuals who study British and world literature gain insights into the historical, social, and cultural contexts in which the works were written. This allows for a better understanding of human experiences and the appreciation of different points of view. British literature composition is the process of creating written works in the English language that originate in or are related to the United Kingdom. This includes works written by British authors throughout history in the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Different literary movements, such as Medieval, Renaissance, Romanticism, and Postmodernism, have shaped the evolution of British literature composition. The composition of British literature has had a significant impact on the literary world and continues to inspire many contemporary writers.

In Asian literature, Malaysia is categorized as the minority for its literature. Its development in literary realm has just built for some decades. It is not like the other big countries, such as China, Japan, and many other Southeast Asia which have been famous for its literature in world. Having no difference with other literature, Malay literature is developed through translation. Since English is still the main language in world literature, Malay literature has to consider its literature to be translated in English too. Meanwhile, modern Malay literature has presented already the novels in form of English language verse. Many novelists have tendency to write directly in English rather than presenting their works in vernacular language (Malay language). Translation, specifically in English, does not play important role in Malay literature. Malay English novels can assist the circulation of Malay Literature around the world, yet it may also reduce the appreciation for Malay language itself. This paper aims to discuss Malay literature dilemma in using English as the vernacular language in novels or using English as the bridge for bringing Malay culture into World Literature.

Background: This article examined intervention studies that used appreciation of visual arts to foster observation skills and discussed their effectiveness in making accurate diagnoses in terms of expertization. Methods: In order to collect journal articles and academic books (written in English) on empirical intervention studies that examined the use of visual arts for cultivating observation skills in health professionals’ education and training, the author first targeted articles that had been included in previous systematic reviews. In addition, they conducted a manual search. From this body of literature, the author selected studies that objectively measured observation skills only through the appreciation of visual art. They collected and read around 300 articles and selected 12 studies after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: This article revealed no concrete evidence on whether appreciating visual art contributes toward an accurate diagnosis. Extant studies determined that such appreciation facilitates the observation of more visual features and a detailed view over time. However, they did not confirm the positive effects of appreciating visual arts on an accurate diagnosis. This article also confirmed that such appreciation does not reduce misdiagnoses or develop tolerance toward ambiguity that prevents premature closure. Moreover, the transfer of observation skills from one context to another is unlikely to be as successful as the intervention studies had intended. Conclusions: For fostering diagnostic skills, providing students with many instances of medical cases and appropriate knowledge to evoke implicit learning for extracting subtle differences in the cases, should be prioritized over visual art appreciation. On the other hand, such appreciation may foster verbalization skills and understanding or extraction of the patient’s background and context. These competencies may cultivate teamwork and perspective-taking, indirectly leading to an accurate diagnosis.

Among all the literary pieces used in English language teaching, poetry has always been regarded as an interesting and challenging literature genre used in English language teaching. Researchers that explored the appreciation of poetry and the factors that affect its approach had different points of view; however, they certainly agreed on the universal concern of research on the difficulty and lack of enthusiasm in dealing with poetry. Accordingly, recent neuroscientific research commenced using poetry in paraphrasing since both complement one another in language teaching. As a literary product, poetry requires a high analysis skill for adequate comprehension, while paraphrasing involves extensively analyzing ideas and forming new borrowed personal interpretation. Hence, this study aimed to see the relationship between students' degree of poetry appreciation and paraphrasing skills.

Streszczenie:
This is a study of the translation and reception of the Roman historian Livy in the sixteenth century in the British Isles. The thesis examines five major translations of Livy's history of Rome, the Ab Urbe Condita, into the English and Scottish vernaculars. The texts considered here span from the earliest extant translation of around 1533 to the first, full-scale translation published in 1600. By taking a broad view across the century, the thesis uncovers the multiple and versatile uses to which Livy was being put and maps out the major trends surrounding his reception. The first chapter examines Livy's initial reception into print in Europe, outlining the attempts of his earliest editors to impose a critical order onto his enormous work. The subsequent chapters consider the respective translations undertaken by John Bellenden, Anthony Cope, William Thomas, William Painter, and Philemon Holland. Each translation is treated as a case study and compared in detail with the Latin original, thereby revealing the changes Livy's history experienced through the process of translation. By locating these translations in the cultural and political contexts from which they emerged, this study reveals how Livy was exploited in some of the most pressing debates of the period, from arguments over women's apparel to questions of faith. The thesis also considers how these translations responded to the most recent developments in European scholarship on the Ab Urbe Condita and on classical history more generally. Livy's contribution to the development of Scottish historiography is also considered, both as a stylistic model and as a rich source of narrative material. Ultimately this thesis demonstrates that Livy played a fundamental though hitherto underexplored role in the development of vernacular literature and historiography in the British Isles.

Streszczenie:
The argument of this thesis is that Finnegans Wake is a peculiarly appropriate text for an investigation of the academic discipline of English, and that the issue of readership is the best way to approach the Wake. The thesis, which is organised into three main sections, shows that both Finnegans Wake and the discipline of English Studies are similarly engaged in problems of defining audiences. The opening section shows that the Wake has long been seen as a limit to literature, and as a defining text of literary study. Reception theory proves unable to cope with a study of historical audiences. Finnegans Wake was written over a period roughly concomitant with the rapid professionalisation of English studies and underwent a loss of audiences except for its critical reviewers. The extended third chapter sets out in some detail the growth of English studies, both in itself and more specifically as a context for the name of Joyce in the 1930s and beyond. This also includes analysis of the passage of the Wake in university syllabi. The second section considers post-structuralist claims that the Wake disrupts or subverts the space of the academy. It analyses a wide range of poststructuralist and other reactions to the Wake, and proceeds to a study of inscriptions of readership in the work of Derrida, and explores Derrida's idea of audiences for Joyce. The third section presents two readings of key elements of Finnegans Wake. Analysis of the letters, and of some of Joyce's sources, stresses the important role of the professor figures, which is indicative of the extent to which Joyce's last work was influenced by the professionalisation of literary study. Textual analysis proceeds with the Four, who function as an internal interpretive community. A brief conclusion sums up the argument of the thesis.

The present study opens up the field of Catalan connections with English literature. The importance of Edwardian influences on the general transmission of English authors and works is demonstrated. Original data on the reception of G.K. Chesterton, the Edwardian figure with a most remarkable impact in Catalonia, is brought to light (Chapter 1, Appendix 1), followed by discussion of the presence of H.G. Wells and G.B. Shaw and an account of the reception of Well's early fiction (Chapter 2); their influence sheds new light on the aspiration of an élite to modernise Catalan culture. Catalan translations of English fictional works produced in the period 1918-38 (Chapter 3, Appendix II) are linked to the reception of the roman anglais in the context of the crisis of the roman à thèse, and the meditating influence of French criticism is revealed. The values of romance, adventure, and the common man (from Defoe to Stevenson, from Stevenson to Conrad) constitute the recurrent thread associated with the English tradition and with the Edwardian fictional canon, as these were mediated from France to Catalonia. This panorama of transmission enhances an understanding of Catalan views of the novel, in the light of Edwardian values (Chapter 4), as exemplified in Carles Riba's critical appraisal of two Catalan authors, in the appeal of Joseph Conrad's narrative technique and its influence on J.M. de Sagarra, as well as in the comparison of Frank Swinnerton's Nocturne (a best-seller of 1917) and its Catalan counterpart, M. Teresa Vernet's Les algues roges. This thesis also includes a chronology of the reception of Chesterton and a list of Catalan translations of English works of fiction.

Streszczenie:
The reception of the Huguenot poet Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas' Semaines (1578, 1584 et seq.) is an important episode in early modern literary history for understanding relations between Scottish, English and French literature, interactions between contemporary reading and writing practices, and developments in divine poetry. This thesis surveys translations (Part I), allusions and quotations in prose (Part II) and verse imitations (Part III) from the period when English translations of the Semaines were being printed in order to identify historical trends in how readers absorbed and adapted the poems. Early translations show that the Semaines quickly acquired political and diplomatic affiliations, particularly at the Jacobean Scottish Court, which persisted in subsequent decades (Chapter 1). William Scott's treatise The Model of Poesy (c. 1599) and translations indicate how attractive the Semaines' combination of humanist learning and sacred rhetoric was, but the poems' potential appeal was only realized once Josuah Sylvester's Devine Weeks (1605 et seq.) finally made the complete work available in English (Chapter 2). Different communities of readers developed in early modern England and Scotland once this edition became available (Chapter 3), and we can observe how individuals marked, copied out, quoted and appropriated passages from their copies of the poems in ways dependent on textual and authorial circumstances (Chapter 4). The Semaines, both in French and in Sylvester's translation, were used as a stylistic model in late-Elizabethan playtexts and Zachary Boyd's Zions Flowers (Chapter 5), and inspired Jacobean poems that help us to assess Du Bartas' influence on early modern poetry (Chapter 6). The great variety of responses to the Semaines demonstrates new ways that intertextuality was a constituent feature of vernacular religious literature that was being read and written in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Britain.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is an analysis of the manner in which the persona and works of Ben Jonson were appropriated – between the Restoration, in 1660, and the retirement of David Garrick, in 1776 – to reflect the political and social concerns of the age. Unlike previous studies, rather than primarily focusing on the stage history of Jonson, I analyse a wide range of sources – produced both within and outwith the theatre – in order to explore, across a variety of media, a breadth of material which appropriates the playwright and his works. I shall consider in my first main chapter the appropriations of Jonson within the Restoration court, in particular noting the assimilation of the playwright's work to what might be styled a proto-Tory ideology, as well as the way in which his plays could mirror the destabilising effects of the king's romantic liaisons. In my second chapter, I explore the moral reformation at the turn of the eighteenth century, in which we can see appropriations of Jonson which cast his works as being primarily didactic. The third chapter moves the narrative of the thesis into the years of the premiership of Sir Robert Walpole. I shall consider the way in which the playwright's works – especially The Alchemist and Eastward Ho! – were seen as being especially relevant to an age of speculation and mercantile endeavour, as well as examining the manner in which the figures of Sejanus and Volpone were appropriated to mock the increasingly unpopular premier. In the final chapter, I shall offer an analysis of Garrick's seminal portrayal of Drugger in the contexts of the political philosophy of the mid-eighteenth century, considering the manner in which it was interpreted alongside the character's further appropriations by Francis Gentleman. The thesis concludes by exploring political appropriations of Jonson up to the present day.

This thesis argues that as historians of English-Canadian poetry, A. J. M. Smith, John Sutherland, Northrop Frye, and Desmond Pacey explicitly promote the value of past conflict reconciled into present harmony. They do so by claiming that such reconciliation marks the maturity of English-Canadian culture. This thesis also argues, however, that the interactive progression of their histories implicitly undermines this value. It does so because each critic appreciates a different group of poets for realizing their shared cultural ideal, thereby establishing contradictory representations of what they all claim to be the culmination of English-Canadian literary history. The thesis concludes that while their lingering sense of present cultural maturity should now be fully renounced, the value these critics place on reconciliation is well worth preserving and transforming.

Abstract An ageing scholar takes his young bride, for their honeymoon, to Rome, a far cry from the English provincial town which gives its staunch name to George Eliot’s supreme novel: Middlemarch. For Dorothea Brooke, now inescapably Dorothea Casaubon, the disillusionment has already begun. Rome oppresses her, though not Rome alone. Forms both pale and glowing took possession of her young sense, and fixed themselves in her memory even when she was not thinking of them, preparing strange associations which remained through her after-years. Our moods are apt to bring with them images which succeed each other like the magiclantern pictures of a doze; and in certain states of dull forlornness Dorothea all her life continued to see the vastness of St. Peter’s, the huge bronze canopy, the excited intention in the attitudes and garments of the prophets and evangelists in the mosaics above, and the red drapery which was being hung for Christmas spreading itself everywhere like a disease of the retina.

“American English as a poetic resource” argues that American English is one of the country’s great poetic resources. It is remarkably adaptable, contested, and diverse. When poets explore American English’s poetic usefulness, the diversity of their approaches and interests demonstrates the language’s flexibility. They use American English to critique and celebrate America and its literary traditions and to create a distinctive literature that also draws from traditions outside it. They mark differences as well as affinities. In some cases, the poetry shows an exuberant appreciation of American English’s peculiarities, its quirks and openness to experimentation and cultural cross-fertilization. Discussed poets include Walt Whitman, Harryette Mullen, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ezra Pound, and Robert Frost.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Chapter 4 traces the features and channels of the initial appreciation of American literature by Italian intellectuals. The scarce knowledge of the English language among Italians had a direct influence on the discovery of American literature, since French translations regularly acted as a cultural go-between. Even the fact that millions of Italians migrated to the Americas in the decades around the turn of the century did not encourage better knowledge of English. This cultural resistance is also somehow connected to the near-absence of the theme of migration to the USA in the literary production of Italian authors. Despite the fact that millions of Italians were crossing the Atlantic, interest in the language and literature of those distant places and interest in representing the experience of migration remained minimal. The chapter also deals briefly with opera librettos, a genre that showed a similar tension between French and American influence. The final section discusses the interest shown by Italian intellectuals towards American pragmatist philosophy at the turn of the century. This involved a number of key figures in Italian culture, including the future leader of Italian Fascism, Benito Mussolini.

Streszczenie:
Hebrew, once regarded as a “classical language,” exerts enormous shaping power on British and American poetry, politics, and culture from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. It prompts the greatest innovations in post-Renaissance English verse, developments in aesthetics, including the sublime, fruitful arguments in politics, and vital strands of British and American thought that cannot be accounted for otherwise. This shaping power—related to but not the same as the influence of biblical translations regarded as literature—has received only sporadic attention. Hebrew as the other classic has not obtained its rightful place in studies of literature in English, nor in Anglo-American literate culture. This essay explores the other classic in: British and American colleges and universities; Puritan Hebraists; concepts of the sublime; the seminal criticism of Robert Lowth; the work of Dennis, Watts, Smart, Macpherson, Merrick, Blake, Wordsworth, Whitman, Longfellow, and Lazarus; in myths of national origin and identification; in Coleridge, De Quincey, Thoreau, Melville, Arnold, and J. L. Lowes; as well as in an appreciation of the stylistic and moral strengths of Hebrew Scripture. It explores why study of Hebrew declined. The essay challenges the exclusion of Hebrew, upon which all discussion of “classical languages” and their reception by the romantics has been based. The presence of Hebrew as the other classic enlarges and redefines the nature of classical influences on the romantic era.

Streszczenie:
This chapter concentrates on the Shakespeare authorship controversy. It examines the correlation between the literary persona that is the author of the Shakespearean corpus with the historical persona that is William of Stratford. It also talks about the English schoolteacher named J. Thomas Looney, who created a profile of the author of the Shakespearean corpus based on the contents of the plays and poetry. The chapter looks into Looney's proposal that Edward de Vere is the author of the Shakespearean corpus. It also discusses the “New Criticism,” which is an approach to literature that intentionally ignores authorship or authorial intent as well as social and cultural context in favor of deep readings of the text and an aesthetic appreciation of its structure and perceived meaning.

Streszczenie:
John Ashbery named Marvell as one of the three poets to whom he was most attracted when he decided on his vocation in college, and Marvellian echoes resound throughout his work. This chapter argues that Marvell and Ashbery’s kinship is grounded in a shared experience of historical rupture introduced by new media, and in their efforts to welcome its derangements of individual experience. Both poets were alert to the possibilities mass media offered for the realization of traditionally Christian (though hardly exclusively Christian) virtues, and they made stylistic choices with these possibilities in mind. A just appreciation of their common strategies gives us reason to question the identification of aesthetic innovation with conceptual breakthrough, and to reconsider the role of ‘tradition’ in accounts of the English Revolution and the literature associated with it.
