Recently, engineering graduates who acquired different skills, as well as leadership capabilities, are very much demanded to maintain high-level innovation, dealing with emerging technologies, and fulfilling the various needs of the public. Consequently, it is necessary that academicians in engineering programs develop appropriate curricula to achieve excellence in engineering education. Being accredited from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is an indication that an academic program has fulfilled international standards in engineering education. The main element in ABET evaluation process is Student Outcomes (SOs) as they incorporate several capabilities and skills expected by stakeholders such as employers. In this study, we used Interpretive Structural Modeling technique (ISM), which is a soft operational research technique, to prioritize SOs and develop a precise study plan for the Industrial Engineering program at Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering (IMSE) at Kuwait University (KU). This plan showed an intelligible depiction of the relationships between the SOs and a clear direction on how to merge them within the engineering study plan. For data collection, surveys were developed and conducted to faculty members at IMSE Department at KU in addition to a set of employers within the country. The results indicated that ISM model facilitates a clear understanding of the relationships among SOs within the Industrial Engineering study plan at IMSE at KU. In addition, it recommended that students should understand the professional and ethical responsibilities at early stages of the study plan and that should be followed by training them on effective communication techniques.

Excellence is defined in an organization as the ongoing efforts put by any employee to complete his/her task in an excellent way. The tasks are completed as per the internal framework of standards and processes defined within an organization. A task completed by any employee is said to be excellent if the output of the task exceeds task objectives or task expectations. We are designing the Engineering Excellence Plan which contains different goals and metrics. This plan can compute excellency factor for any employee within an organization towards his/her defined goals. The goals and metrics can be different for different organisation and strategy to compute excellency factor can also be varied. We are designing one general template in Excel that contains general set of goals and metrics (metrics are defined to analyse whether the goals are achieved or not). After defining the goals and metrics we will compute the percentage of excellency for any employee. The percentage of excellency depends upon how much an employee achieved his/her goals within the given time frame. After computing individual percentage for an individual employee, we will then compute the overall percentage of any project or any team within an organization.

Streszczenie:
The Centre for Heritage Conservation Studies and Technologies (KDWT) was founded in spring 2016 as a central research institute of the Otto Friedrich University Bamberg. The core tasks of the KDWT are the expansion of knowledge and technology transfer to non-university research in-stitutions, business and crafts, the expansion of technical excellence, the supplementation of the range of courses, the support in research, teaching, transfer and service in terms of content and technical equipment as well in the internationalisation of research. The centre is divided into four departments: Monument Preservation, Digital Heritage Technologies, Building Research and Res-toration Science and thus covers both the foundations in the humanities as well as engineering and scientific approaches. The first volume of the “Reports of the KDWT” series presents the technically diverse work of the first two and a half years since the KDWT was established in a format with colour illustrations. Four main chapters represent the four departments mentioned. First, the fundamental aims and focus of each subject are outlined. This is followed by individual presentations of the respective re-search projects, which also would like to bring the content closer to the non-expert reader, especially through the illustrations provided. For a better overview, basic information and thematically linked publications have been added to the projects. For example, the Monument Preservation department reports on various projects related to the theme, city and heritage conservation, addresses participatory heritage protection, emotions and heritage as well as a municipal monument plan for Bavaria, to name just a few. The digital heritage technologies outline projects in the area of 3D documentation. The building research area analy-ses large medieval buildings, develops concepts for building preservation and improves technical skills in building analysis. Finally, the area of restoration science explains the use of non-destructive methods of investigation and microanalysis based on international and local projects, be they Sin-ghalese temple sites, European cathedrals or medieval textiles from the Bamberg cathedral treasury. The aim of the project presentations is to clarify to what extent each sub-area represents the KDWT with extraordinary, professionally sound experience and expertise in teaching, research and above all in practice. In order to do justice to the extensive transfer, networking and research activities of the individual members, a fifth main chapter lists all individual services in alphabetical order until mid-2018.

Under the background of the general plan for general survey of Germplasm Resources issued by the State Forestry and grassland administration, in order to establish the forest and grass germplasm resources management system, it is urgent to identify the forest vegetation types. In the past, manual identification was often used, which was inefficient and had a high error rate. Considering the small number of samples in the plant leaf database, in order to improve the accuracy of plant leaf identification, In the framework of tensorflow, a convolution neural network method for plant leaf image recognition based on transfer learning is proposed. Firstly, the plant leaf image is preprocessed, and the plant leaf image data set is expanded through the horizontal transformation, random clipping, translation transformation, color and illumination transformation of the original image, and is divided into training set and test set in the ratio of 7:3, the concept V3 model is applied to image data processing by migration learning. The trained models ResNet50 and Concept V3 are migrated and trained on the plant leaf image data set, and the full connection layer is replaced in the pre training model, so that it can adapt to the recognition of plant leaf images. The accuracy of the test set obtained from the pre training model of this method is 95.22% and 95.45%, reaching the excellent level required by the task.

The versatility of nanomedicines allows for various modifications of material type, size, charge and functionalization, offering a promising platform for biomedical applications including tumor targeting. One such material, silk fibroin (SF) has emerged, displaying an excellent combination of mechanical and biological properties characterized by its high tensile and breaking strength, elongation, stiffness and ductility. High stability allows SF to maintain its chemical structure even at high temperatures (around 250°C) and compared with other biological polymers like polylactide (PLA), poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and collagen, SF shows excellent biocompatibility and lower immunogenic response making it a very suitable material for drug delivery and tissue engineering. Here we describe the structure, synthesis and properties of SF nanoparticles. We evaluate its emergence as a multi-functional polymer for its utility as a nanocarrier to deliver cancer therapies directly to tumors together with considerations for its clinical use.

Hierarchical structures are widely observed in nature, and they have been considered to have excellent mechanical properties. In this paper, a novel hierarchical honeycomb with graded design is proposed to improve impact resistance. Two parameters are selected to determine the design of hierarchy and gradient respectively. A series of nonlinear finite element models are developed in Abaqus to systematically explore the crashworthiness. In in-plane crushing, the deformation mode of honeycomb is studied, and the specific energy absorption (SEA) is mainly discussed in out-of-plane crushing. Compared with the traditional honeycomb, the energy absorption characteristics can be increased by up to 81.4% in the simulation.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Objective/Scope The studied field is located in North Oman asset and developed through waterflood line-drive since 1980s with top quartile recovery factor. In the period between 2010 and 2012, production has declined faster than expected reaching to a peak decline rate of 19% per year resulted to significant associated oil production loss. This abstract summarizes the recovery process for waterflood development supported with lean approach by WRFM team not only to arrest production decline but also to flip the coin to production incline in 2015-2016. Lean Approach The major reasons that led to the ineffective waterflood performance in this field were several surface and subsurface issues related to water distribution, low injection efficiency and low level of integration within the team. The success achieved through focused proactive waterflood management (Asset's WRFM Plan, 2016) and seamless integration with field operations and asset leadership with below key steps: Setting a firm WRFM Waterflood Strategy focusing on waterflood management, field/reservoir operating envelope and pressure maintenance. Goal Deployment value stream metrics aimed to improve reservoir operating envelope compliance by improving water-injectivity compliance that ensures effective and even injection water distribution etc. The pressure maintenance strategies include priorities the injection optimization in the low-pressure blocks and continuous monitoring of reservoir pressure through periodic acquisition of pressure surveys. This resulted in significant improvement of average reservoir pressure. Standardized regular field, pattern/ sector and well reviews (Chatterjee, Someshwar et.al., 2017) resulted in effective sweep monitoring strategy by using latest FDP static and dynamic models calibrated with recent surveillance data (RST, MPLT etc.). This process helps to generate and optimize the WRFM opportunities to maximize the production. Periodic waterflood health checks by external and internal experts mainly focused on accessing waterflood improvements and benchmarked with other fields of the asset during 2014, 2016 and 2018. The waterflood health check score improved with time and field achieved the highest score across all the other matured fields in North Oman. More importantly, the noticeable improvement in integration between different teams i.e. petroleum, operation, and engineering on daily to weekly basis ensures stability of the WI performance, meeting injection target and honest transparent communications to work as ONE TEAM through different session using Leader Standard Work (LSW). Results and Conclusion These efforts by the integrated team resulted in: Arresting the production decline from 19% annual effective to 6% within 3 years Reversing the decline trend of 3% between 2015-2016 Safeguard more than a mln m3 of asset's reserves A gain of average oil rate for reversing the decline trend This project is an excellent example of being innovative with lean structure and simple "Going Back to Basics" principle for water flood management. The projects delivered with commercial mindset to arrest the decline and safeguard reserves; external focus by benchmarking with waterflood assessment and strong integration- displaying highest standard of improved organizational behavior.

One of offset wells had been abandoned because of not reaching to reservoir target and other offset well was eventually reach to well TD after three sidetracks and incurred heavy costs. This paper discusses the case study of phenomenal drilling performance at Well-3 in Alpha field which includes extensive well engineering data reviews to achieve operational excellence. A very detailed offset review has been prepared followed by generation of well plan after careful selection of the drilling plans which included drill bits designs, BHA selections, drilling practices, drilling fluids performance targets, drilling rig performance and extensive level of vigilance to deliver the most complex well with best of the class benchmarking in the field as compared with previous wells and surrounding fields of similar sub-surface challenges. The detailed Well Design and Engineering together with technological selection purely application-based enabling to deliver a successful Alpha field well, both in terms of the lowest cost and in terms of time as the fastest well in Alpha field. The Alpha field due to its complexity, lower success rates and higher costs was one of the most challenging assets in terms of drilling and production delivery. With excellent drilling performance at Well-3 and good production results has opened more opportunities for the Alpha field, and more wells are being planned in the upcoming time.

It is well recognized that manufacturing is making a comeback to the US, from the outsourcing that took place between 1980–2010. The need for advanced manufacturing careers is also well documented by many manufacturing organizations, substantiated by the report entitled “A National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing” which was released by the Executive Office of the President National Science and Technology Council’s in February 2012. The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) points out that at the height of the recession, 32% of manufacturers reported that they had jobs unfilled because they could not find people with requisite skills. It is also well documented that liberal arts (BA) graduates suffer from mal-employment problems; they are either underemployed or unemployed. To solve this problem, this paper describes an innovative solution of transforming BA graduates to take on advanced manufacturing positions to meet the skilled workforce needs and fill these positions. This paper briefly describes the program, but focuses mainly on one aspect of it: industry partnerships. We describe the importance of industry partners to the proposed solution. We also discuss industry needs.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) innovators lag behind their non-HBCU counterparts in the commercialization of innovations as they were originally set up as teaching and blue-collar trade institutions. There exists a strong need for education and training to bridge this gap by promoting the commercialization of innovations in HBCUs and thus transform next-generation HBCU innovators into entrepreneurs. HBCUs are promoting entrepreneurial education and mindset via changes in engineering education programs and curriculums. Several federally funded programs like the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) Center for Nanotechnology Research Excellence (CNRE) are promoting innovation and intellectual property generation at HBCUs. NSF I-Corps Program supports the education and training of innovators about the commercialization of mature or patented innovations at HBCUs. The NSF I-Corps Introduction to Customer Discovery explores strategies in identifying key customer segments through extensive customer interviews, which is a fundamental step in the commercialization process. This paper discusses our educational experience in the customer discovery process for Pumpless Solar Thermal Air Heater (Patent Number 10775058). To learn about prospective customers’ attitudes and perceptions of the innovation, we conducted 30 interviews with potential customers (end users). Our innovation is focused on providing portable, cost-effective, healthy, and environmentally friendly space heating solutions. We tested several hypotheses about the value proposition of our innovation during interviews to explore the market segments for potential commercialization. During the Customer Discovery process, we came to know about new issues such as health issues caused by the dry air in winter. We also learned that mitigation of problems due to the current heating system required a humidifier to reduce health issues that added additional cost. Based on our interviews our innovation is suitable for customers needing: (i) Heating source mitigating health issues, (ii) add-on technology to reduce their heating bills. Our next step is to pursue market segments for our innovation. We plan to utilize the current experience of commercialization of intellectual property to develop training modules for the MECH 302 Undergraduate Research Experience and MECH 500 Research Methods and Technical Communication courses offered under the mechanical engineering program at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).
