The aim of this paper is to search for a new, contemporary, form of literary engagement by avoiding a return to the 20th century idea of literary engagement that presents literature either as autonomous and un-political or as explicitly committed to some political cause. Taking the Dutch poet laurate Lieke Marsman's debut novel Het tegenovergestelde van een mens (The opposite of a human being) as an exemplary case study, this paper stresses that the literature of the millennial generation explores a new and different form of engagement, a form that is consonant with our 21st century living conditions, that are more complex, fluid, and volatile than they have ever been.

Med afsæt i den pragmatiske sociolog Laurent Thévenots begreb om »familiært engagement« præsenterer artiklen tre forskellige metodologiske tilgangetil bynatur som konkrete steder for det, vi kalder »fælleshed«. Hvor begrebet om familiært engagement i sig selv kan minde om »stedstilknytning« if.eks. psykologisk og geografisk litteratur, har teorien som sådan den fordel, at den kobler individuelle engagementer med et relateret begreb om socialkoordinering i form af »fællesheder«. Dermed giver den mulighed for at udpege det familiære engagements mulige samspil med andre former for engagement i byens grønne steder, navnlig et funktionelt engagement i planer og et offentligt engagement i retfærdiggørelse, indeholdt i den samme analytiske model. Spørgsmålet, som her belyses fra forskellige metodiske vinkler, er altså, hvilke former for relationer der findes mellem familiært engagement og fælleshed i bynaturens steder, og andre former for engagement og fælleshed (funktionelt, offentligt). Metodepluralismen over de tre studier resulterer i en generel pointe om forholdet mellem familiært, funktionelt og offentligt engagement i bynatur, og at man tager højde for de mange forskellige mulige sammensætninger af stedsrelationer og ikke søger at reducere disse til ét simpelt fænomen.

ObjectiveThe present study aimed to examine the confounding effects of depressive symptoms and the role of gender in the association between social engagement and cognitive functioning among older Indian adults.DesignLarge-scale cross-sectional survey data were analysed.Setting and participantsData from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (2017–2019) were used in the analysis. The sample included 23 584 individuals aged 60 years and above (11 403 men and 12 181 women).Outcome measuresThe outcome variable was cognitive functioning, which was based on various measures including immediate and delayed word recall, orientation, executive functioning, arithmetic ability and object naming. Social engagement measure consists of marital status, living arrangement, availability of confidant, and participation in indoor games, and social and cultural functions. The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms.ResultsSignificant gender differences in mean cognition scores (men: 25.8, women: 21.1; on a scale of 0–43) were observed. Two-way stratification between social engagement and depressive symptoms was significantly associated with cognitive functioning after controlling for selected explanatory factors. Older men with a low level of social engagements had significantly poor cognitive functioning (β=−1.12; 95% CI: −1.53 to –0.72) compared with men with a high level of social engagements. On the other hand, women with a higher level of social engagement performed poorly on cognitive tests (β=−1.54; 95% CI: −2.11 to –0.98) compared with men with higher social engagements. Three-way stratification between social engagement, gender and depressive symptoms suggests that social engagement’s buffering effects are lower in women than in men. The Karlson-Holm-Breen method identified a significant confounding effect of depressive symptoms on the relationship between social engagement and cognitive functioning.ConclusionThe positive association of social engagement with cognitive functioning was significantly confounded by depressive symptoms, suggesting the need for maintaining social relations that help improve mental health and cognitive functioning among older adults.

Within a span of fifteen years civic engagement has become a cottage industry in political science and political theory, but the term has now outlived its usefulness and exemplifies Giovanni Sartori's worry about conceptual “stretching.” This article traces civic engagement's ascension as a catch-all term for almost anything that citizens might happen to do together or alone, and illustrates the confusion that its popularity has occasioned. It proposes that civic engagement meet a well-deserved end, to be replaced with a more nuanced and descriptive set of engagements: political, social, and moral. It also examines the appeal of engagement itself, a term that entails both attention and energy. Attention and energy are the mainsprings of politics and most other challenging human endeavors. But they can be invested politically, or in associative pursuits, or in moral reasoning and follow-through, and those types of engagement can, but need not, coincide. We should be asking which kinds of engagement—which kinds of attention and energetic activity—make democracy work, and how they might be measured and promoted.

Engagement quality (concurring partner) review is an important part of the audit review process. It is one quality control mechanism used by public accounting firms to monitor the quality of audit engagements. The engagement quality reviewer serves as an evaluator of the performance of the engagement partner and engagement team. Concerns about the effectiveness of existing firm concurring partner review practices have led to increased partner sanctions imposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In addition, Section 103 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 directs the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) to develop an auditing standard on engagement quality review. This practice note reports on an analysis of six major firms' written guidance and practice aids for engagement quality review. Our comparison of the firms' guidance shows some differences in the assignment of engagement quality reviewer, the participation of the engagement quality reviewer in audit planning, the extensiveness of practice aids, and the involvement of engagement quality reviewer during the course of audit engagements. Lastly, we identify a number of research questions and practice implications.

Abstract The imperative of knowledge based and inclusive development is making universities to realign their teaching and research missions to embrace community engagement. Using case studies of three universities in Nigeria, this paper examines how different types of Universities in Nigeria carry out community engagement and the nature of the benefits that accrues from the engagement. It also analyses the existing university policy framework with respect to university community engagement with a view to identifying the effectiveness of these policies in engendering university-community engagement in Nigeria. The findings revealed that the emerging policy to support community engagement at the universities does not provide for adequate framework to engender an effective university-community engagement. Besides, the reward systems of the universities do not support community engagement as a valid form of scholarship. Most of the university engagements are formal engagements with little or no link to immediate local communities. There is the need for a policy re-orientation that first integrates the principles of infusion model as a framework of the university community engagement policy. Secondly, the university community engagement policy must reward and recognize community engagement as a valid kind of scholarship among academics. This is a sine qua non in increasing university contributions to the development of their immediate communities.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the association between social engagement and conversion from Cognitive Impairment No Dementia (CIND) to dementia and to investigate the mediating role of cognitive and physical engagements on that relationship. Data from two waves (2010 and 2014) of the psychosocial and core modules of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were used. The sample consisted of 929 people who had CIND in 2010 and participated in the survey in 2014. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) with eight indicators of social engagement (activities with children, volunteering with youth/others, attending educational course/organization, meeting up, speaking on the phone, writing or emailing) found three groups: formal and informal social engagement (20.7%), informal social engagement only (48.9%), and low social engagement (30.5%). Binary logistic regression analysis showed sub groups with higher levels and greater variety of social engagements were associated with lower probability of conversion to dementia in four years. Path analysis with structural equation modeling (SEM) framework showed the relationship between patterns of social engagement and lower conversion to dementia was mediated by having higher engagement in cognitive activities (e.g. home maintenance, playing sports), but not by engagement in physical activities (e.g. playing games, using computer). Results from this study implied (1) promoting active social engagement may be a promising intervention to prevent or delay conversion from CIND to dementia, and (2) promoting social engagement may be a particularly effective and efficient strategy since it promotes other activity engagements that may itself prevent or delay conversion from CIND to dementia.

The political engagement of individuals has complexly evolved in a borderless world brought by various developments in technology. This study revisits how various predictors, including personality traits such as extraversion and openness to experience, political efficacy, and online (FB) engagement, influence offline political engagements. Using quantitative techniques, the data gathered from a survey with 120 respondents in Cebu City, Philippines, was analyzed using the R software to generate descriptive statistics, correlation, simple linear regression, and multiple regression. A salient finding shows that the respondents’ level of extraversion, openness to experience, and political efficacy is high, while the level of political engagement is low online and offline. While online (FB) political engagement alone highly predicts offline political engagement behavior, all other independent variables (extraversion, openness to experience, and political efficacy) modeled as one attributes a very low effect towards offline political engagement. The model that includes all predictors have produced significant result that strongly supports this study’s central claim. Further, the study discussed the non-engagement of Cebuanos and commenced with suggestions on how Facebook (FB) can further influence an individual’s political engagements as a social media platform. While the publics’ engagements on political issues are vital to democratic societies, the study stressed social media's crucial influence on safeguarding democracies, human rights, and social justice.

Regardless of the size of the hospital, the leaders have critical responsibilities to engage the employee in some situations. So you are in luck if you have the most precious tool of technologies usage as an enhancement variable. Aim: This study aimed to explore Employee Engagement factors in the light of advanced technology. Design: An exploratory correlation study design was exploited in this study. Sample& Setting: a cross-sectional sample of 350 different category employees was employed. Tools: an adapted engagement questionnaire was used to collect the pertinent facts. Results: The main discoveries of this study exhibited that, in the light of technology, many factors are important for enhancing work engagement; these factors are leadership, teamwork, social engagement, staffing& resource capability…..etc. Respectively: These factors did not differ between the studied group work engagements concerning neither their working department nor relation to their gender, but there was a highly significant difference between the studied group work engagements to their years of experience Conclusion: technology using can enhance employee engagement. Although many factors enhance employee engagement, the advanced technologies make those factors differ in their priority and importance. Recommendations: all organizations should promote technologies induction within limits that help in employees’ engagement. Also, to achieve a higher level of work engagement when deploying technology, it's important to distinguish between tacit and explicit knowledge. The objective of this paper was to develop an immersive Web-based learning model and measure its effectiveness on improving self-questioning and self-study skills among graduate students. The proposed model was guided theoretically by the flipped classroom as a new Web-based learning trend. It was also guided pedagogically by active and reflective learning principles that support transforming the teaching and learning practices from content engagement to cognitive engagement. The targeted immersive learning model encompasses four reciprocal phases: Pro-act, Act, Reflect, and Re-act (PARR). A control group post-test only experimental design was applied in this paper to examine the effect of this new learning model on both self-questioning and self-study skills. To validate the suggested model, a convenience sample of graduate students studying an advanced statistics course was selected from the Distance Teaching and Training Program at the Arabian Gulf University during the second semester of the 2012/2013 academic year. The dependent variables in this research were measured by self-questioning skills scale and self-study skills scale. After designing and applying this new immersive Web-based learning model (PARR), findings revealed that using the flipped classroom through this immersive Web-based learning model has a statistical and practical impact on developing self-questioning and self-study skills among graduate students. Each student in the experimental group was able to master self-questioning skills needed to apply quantitative research data analysis knowledge and methods. In addition, each student in the experimental group scored more than theoretical average of the self-study skills scale. The results of this paper may increase the probability and genralizability of using flipped classroom to deliver other statistical course at all educational levels. The contribution of this research is that it qualifies the Web-based instructional practices to shift from content acquisition act to knowledge expression and creation act. In addition, the paper will be of benefit to people looking for pedagogical applications of virtual and blended learning environments for developing multiple ways to express what learners know and be able to do.

Zusammenfassung Seit 2015 vielfältige informelle zivilgesellschaftliche Unterstützung im Gefolge einer dramatischen Flüchtlingssituation in vielen Städten und Kommunen erfolgt ist, rückt das Thema „Mikro-Engagement“ – verstanden als alltägliches, kleines, sozialraumnahes, auch nachbarschaftliches Engagement – ins Zentrum. Es ist niedrigschwellig und lebensweltlich eingebunden und bietet so auch wichtige Zugänge für jene Personengruppen, die sich nicht ohne weiteres an Formaten der organisierten Zivilgesellschaft beteiligen möchten. Um den Zusammenhang zwischen alltäglichen Mikro-Engagement und sozialem Zusammenhalt auszuleuchten, wird zunächst die Bedeutung des privaten Raumes und seiner Übergänge in den öffentlichen Raum für die Konstituierung eines demokratischen Habitus von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern diskutiert (1). Auch das informelle Engagement benötigt begleitende, unterstützende, qualifizierende und vernetzende zivilgesellschaftliche Infrastrukturen (2). Die informellen und nonformalen und handlungswie erfahrungsbezogenen Lernräume des Engagements sind bedeutend für Kompetenzgewinne und politisches Lernen in demokratischen Gesellschaften (3). Angesichts der weiteren Entwicklung sozialer Ungleichheit wird die Bedeutung soziale Bürgerrechte und die Entwicklung der Menschenrechte für den engagement- und gesellschaftspolitischen Diskurs aufgegriffen (4) und es werden abschließend auch Chancen einer „neuen Beschäftigungspolitik“ erörtert, die von Sanktionen Abstand nimmt und informelles wie nonformales Lernen im Medium eines eigensinnigen Engagements ebenso fördert wie Selbstwirksamkeitserfahrungen in den Handlungs- und Erfahrungsräumen des Engagements (5).

Zusammenfassung Vor dem Hintergrund des strukturellen Wandels im freiwilligen Engagement untersucht der vorliegende Beitrag die Beteiligung in drei unterschiedlichen Engagementformen: im administrativen Engagement (formal organisiert und im Rahmen von Leitungs- und Wahlfunktionen), im klassischen Hands-On-Engagement (formal organisiert und praktisch unterstützend) und in den neueren Formen des Engagements (informell organisiert). Die Beteiligung in den drei Engagementformen wird für kreisfreie Städte, städtische Kreise, ländliche Kreise und dünn besiedelte ländliche Kreise analysiert. Außerdem wird untersucht, inwiefern sich Ungleichheiten in Hinblick auf die regionsspezifische Beteiligung in den Engagementformen je nach Geschlecht, Alter oder Bildung zeigen. Mit Hilfe des Deutschen Freiwilligensurveys (FWS) 2019 lässt sich feststellen, dass Hands-On-Engagement in allen regionalen Kontexten am weitesten verbreitet ist. Administratives Engagement wird vor allem in ländlichen Regionen seltener von jungen Menschen oder von Menschen, die keine hohe Bildung aufweisen, ausgeübt. Neue Formen des Engagements werden häufiger in kreisfreien Städten als in anderen regionalen Kontexten ausgeübt; hier engagieren sich alle gesellschaftlichen Gruppen zu ähnlichen Anteilen. Auch wenn die traditionellen Formen des Engagements dominieren, zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass andere Formen ebenfalls bedeutsam sind. Eine stärkere Förderung der neueren Engagementformen vor allem in ländlichen Räumen scheint wichtig, um die Teilhabemöglichkeit aller Bevölkerungsgruppen zu fördern.

Tax consulting services are an important growth area for professional accounting firms. However, regulatory and governmental bodies are concerned that consulting service sales may impair professional accountants' judgment. Using source credibility theory, this study examines whether research and review processes in taxconsulting engagements differ when two key factors are varied: source of the planning idea and engagement type. Big 4 seniors and managers reviewed a tax memorandum in which information source (prepared by National Tax Office or local staff member) and engagement type (initiated by a client or by the firm) are manipulated in a 2×2 design. Engagement managers performed the most thorough reviews when involved in a firm-initiated consulting engagement relying upon a National Tax Office memorandum. Thus, the results of this study are inconsistent with the presumption that objectivity is impaired in highly incentivized consulting engagements.

The study attempts to investigate the level of Employee Engagement and its predictors among the Executive level employees of a reputed Banking and Insurance Software Company in Tamil Nadu, India. The research is based on the primary data collected from 200 executives on a number of parameters related to Employee Engagement and its potential predictors. The research concluded that the level of employee engagement in the organization is quite satisfactory. Four Factors namely Employee Welfare, Empowerment, Employee Growth and Interpersonal Relationships were found to be the predictors of Employee Engagements. Allerdings unterscheidet sich Local Governance unter Einbeziehung bürgerschaftlichen Engagements in ländlichen Räumen deutlich von der im urbanen Kontext. Der konzeptionelle Aufsatz leistet einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis des Verhältnisses von Local Governance und bürgerschaftlichem Engagement in ländlichen Räumen und fokussiert dabei auf vier Besonderheiten: (1) begrenztere Pluralität, (2) engere Engagement-Netzwerke und tradiertere Akteurskonstellationen, (3) kleinere Kommunalverwaltungen und größere Aufgabenzuschnitte sowie (4) eine größere Bedeutung des Engagements bei der Erbringung der kommunalen Daseinsvorsorge. Der Beitrag schließt mit der Ableitung von Herausforderungen aus diesen Besonderheiten und identifiziert Handlungsempfehlungen für die Kommunalverwaltung.

The article is devoted to the study of security proprietary rights to ensure the fulfillment of engagements. The institute of security rights, its regulation under the current legislation of Ukraine and individual countries is analyzed. The legal nature and specific features are determined, the functional load of the methods of ensuring the fulfillment of engagements is clarified and the characteristics of the engagement-legal and real-legal types of security are characterized. Material security encumbrances on the debtor’s property rights, resulting in the „right of succession”, which is to accompany the encumbrance on the thing in the event of its transfer to other owners. The elements of the binding legal relationship are described. Civil turnover requires an effective system of precautionary measures of both binding and substantive nature, due to the need for legal remedies aimed at the proper performance of the parties to their contractual engagements. Along with the engagements, an important place is occupied by the material types of securing contractual engagements, where their main purpose is to give the creditor confidence in the satisfaction of their property interests in case of non-performance or improper performance of engagement by the counterparty. The grounds for the right of the creditor to satisfy property claims on the subject of material security are investigated. A pledge or mortgage may arise on the basis of a contract, law or court decision. The creditor’s claims on the mortgaged property can be satisfied in several ways: foreclosure on the mortgaged property through its sale or transfer of ownership of the mortgaged property in case of default by the debtor of the engagement secured by the pledge. The right of retention is considered, which is realized through the incentive of the debtor to fulfill the engagement by lawful possession of the thing by the creditor until the proper performance of the engagement by the debtor. The right of retention as a form of ensuring the proper performance of an engagement is included in the provisions governing the performance of certain contracts, including contract type, provision of services, commissions, etc. Security rights arise before the breach of the engagement and depend on the proper performance of the contractual engagement. The collateral gives the creditor the right to receive property satisfaction from the subject of collateral in case of non-performance of the engagement due to the debtor’s fault. The analysis and brief description of the types of security property rights is carried out. Theoretical conclusions on the researched questions directed on improvement of regulation of the security rights in the civil legislation of Ukraine are formulated.

Das Engagement für Geflüchtete in Deutschland ging nach der Welle der Flüchtlingshilfe im Jahr 2015 (bis zum russischen Angriffskrieg auf die Ukraine) vorübergehend deut- lich zurück. Frustrationserfahrungen der Engagierten gelten in der Forschung als eine zentrale Ursache dieser Entwicklung. Unter Rückgriff auf qualitative Interviews zeigt der Artikel, dass entsprechende Erfahrungen nicht allein durch enttäuschte Erwartun- gen der Engagierten und prekäre Rahmenbedingungen des Engagements (z. B. unterfi- nanzierte professionelle Strukturen) erklärbar sind. Um Frustration im Engagement für Geflüchtete zu verstehen, ist, so die These des Artikels, auch ein Blick auf alltägliche Pro- bleme der Geflüchteten notwendig. Dieser zeigt, dass Engagierte im Rahmen ihrer Tätig- keit aufgrund restriktiver Asylpolitik und gesellschaftlicher Ungleichheit an Grenzen sto- ßen, die sich im Rahmen des Engagements nicht oder nur begrenzt überwinden lassen.

Engagement und Partizipation haben in diesem neueren Verständnis einen engen und nicht auflösbaren Zusammenhang, weil die Gestaltung der Gesellschaft im Kleinen durch Engagement die Bezüge zu den darauf gerichteten politischen Entscheidungen und zugleich Beteiligungsansprüche schafft. Daher hat Engagementpolitik immer auch enge Bezüge zur Demokratiepolitik. In der Folge der Enquete-Kommission haben sich über die Aktivitäten von Bund, Ländern und Kommunen die neuen und fragilen Politikfelder der „Engagementpolitik“ wie auch – damit eng verbunden – der „Demokratiepolitik“ entwickelt. Auf Empfehlung der Kommission wurde 2002 das Bundesnetzwerk Bürgerschaftliches Engagement (BBE) gegründet, um zu Fragen von Engagement und Zivilgesellschaft die Interessen und Problemperspektiven aus Zivilgesellschaft, Staat und Wirtschaft zu verschränken und gemeinsam fortzuentwickeln. Wet clutches that handle the gearshifts in automatic transmission undergo severe thermal stresses due to the occurrence of large temperature gradients during engagement. To accurately design wet clutches, better models to simulate the engagement process are needed. This work presents a finite element model for simulating wet clutch engagements. The total friction coefficient was used to describe the different lubrication regimes that a wet clutch engagement undergoes. The model also includes provision for drive torque that realistically simulates the engine torque of a car. The results of the simulations are successfully verified by comparison with laboratory experiments on a testrig specially designed to accommodate the drive torque, covering a wide range of typical engagements. Excellent agreement between experiment and simulations is reported in terms of both the dynamics of the engagement and the thermal characteristics. The results are indicative of the utility of the model as a useful engineering tool.

The growing pandemic situation has led the world’s education to the online platform where students’ engagement has been the prime concern of educators, teachers, and researchers. This study aims to report the level of engagement in the online classes in addition to the feeling of the teachers and students towards it. Only a few studies on students’ engagement in the university-level online classes in Bangladesh have yet been conducted. To find the in-depth perfective result, this study has used a quantitative method where one hundred and thirty-eight participants including teachers and students took part in questionnaire surveys. The questionnaires were designed to study three types of engagements like participatory, performance, and skill engagements in virtual education at the level of higher study in Bangladesh. Through a quantitative analysis, our findings show that, though the students get themselves involved in online platforms, their level of engagement varies in terms of these three types of engagements. Data also revealed that the teacher-student interaction level in the online classes is not satisfactory though it lessens the students’ anxiety level. The purpose of this study was to see the learners’ engagement and their attitudes towards online classes. The only limitation is that it is only a small and quantitative study whereas a qualitative study may help to get into more depth the result of it.

The Problem The attachment of a person’s “self” to “role” has been studied from a variety of perspectives by numerous social scientists since 1990. However, scholars are divided on the issues of definition and measurement of engagement. Also, the incremental validity of one engagement measure over the other in predicting performance has not been examined. Therefore, this study attempts to review, test, and examine the incremental validity of different operational definitions of engagement in light of the self and role theory. The Solution ANOVA conducted using 317 knowledge workers from different companies in India indicates that personal engagement, work engagement, and job engagement differ significantly from each other. Next, the results of step-wise regression indicate incremental validity of work engagement over other types of engagements in predicting task performance. However, personal engagement remains the strongest predictor of task performance. The Stakeholders The results of this study are expected to help human resource development (HRD) scholars make more informed decision while choosing a particular engagement measure. The results also encourage practitioners to use work engagement scale to explain their employees’ performance, at least in the Indian context.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of multidimensional engagement (job engagement and organization engagement) on retail stores’ performance directly and indirectly through job performance and job satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from frontline retail store employees. A variance-based structural equation modeling (PLS) is used to examine the relationships between multidimensional engagement, job performance, job satisfaction, and store performance. The bootstrap method was applied to examine the mediation role of job performance and job satisfaction. Findings This study supports the existence of a multi-dimension engagement consisting of job engagement and organization engagement and the relationship between these engagements. Further, this study reveals that job engagement and organization engagement are important determinants of store performance. Practical implications This study provides an avenue for retail store managers to increase their store performance through the development of employee engagement. To improve the store performance, this study suggests that store managers provide a challenging job and encourage employees to use their creativity in serving customers. It is also important to store managers to support employees in performing their jobs, including procedural fairness in stores. Originality/value This study is one of the first attempts to examine the effect of multidimensional engagement on organization performance at a business unit level (retail store).

This study aims to examine the effect of employee engagement, creditor engagement, government engagement and customer engagement on the quality of sustainability reports in energy, raw goods and non cylical companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the 2019-2022 period. The population in this study were energy, raw goods companies and non cylical listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the 2019-2022 period. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling technique and obtained a sample of 39 companies. The data analysis method used is logistic regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that government engagement affects the quality of sustainability reports, while employee engagement, creditor engagement and customer engagement have no effect on the disclosure of sustainability reports.

This research determined the extent of student engagement of students of Partido State University and analyzed the factors affecting their engagement. Moreover, it investigated the correlation between student engagement and academic performance. The study used descriptive-correlational method. A teacher made questionnaire was used to gather data. The general weighted average for two semesters was used to determine the academic performance of the respondents. Focused group discussion was used to validate the data obtained from the questionnaires. A total of three hundred and five students from the College of Education took part in the study. Mean and ranking, frequency count, and Pearson moment correlation were used to treat the data. The study revealed that the level of student engagement along behavioral, emotional and cognitive engagements were high with a mean of 2.84. It was found out that academic performance of the respondents was very good. Furthermore, it was found out that behavioral, emotional and cognitive engagements were positively correlated to the academic performance of the students. Student engagement survey is an important tool to know the whole learning experiences of the students as well the effectiveness of instructional techniques employed by the teachers.

Gamification is to use game elements in a non-game context to increase engagement between human and computer, on the other hand, to encourage in-demand for good behaviors in learning. This research tried to increase student engagements in learning by conducted Gamification technique especially in difficult subjects such as Programming Language courses. The previous work was shown that students dropped, failed, or withdrew from the course at rates of between 35% and 50%. Therefore the main objective of this study is to increase student engagements in learning programming subject, and also to measure the impact of game elements on student’s engagements. Abstract BACKGROUND Engaging patients and care partners in research planning and conduct improves equity and patient-centeredness of research. Determining the most effective engagement methods remains challenging. This study evaluated participation and experience using three engagement methods with the Low Grade Glioma (LGG) Registry’s OPTIMUM project, part of the Participant Engagement in Cancer Genome Sequencing (PE-CGS) Network. METHODS We evaluated participation and experience among participants in LGG Registry Research Advisory Council (RAC) meetings, Twitter (“tweet chats”), and Facebook discussions across four engagement activities. Participants completed validated engagement experience surveys, including the Public & Patient Engagement Evaluation Tool (PPEET), Research Engagement Survey Tool (REST), Patient Engagement in Research Scale (PEIRS-22), and the Trust in Medical Researchers scale. Researchers recorded discussions and performed qualitative analyses across groups. RESULTS RAC engagements involved 25 unique participants representing diverse backgrounds, while tweet chats and Facebook discussions had 197 and 133 participants, respectively. Post-engagement surveys (n = 52 post-engagement 1; n = 40 post-engagement 4) showed no statistically significant differences between engagement approaches in the overall meaningfulness of engagement on PEIRS-22 or REST scales, nor were there differences in post-engagement 1 trust. RAC members rated PEIRS-22 procedural requirements more positively and reported recalling a wide range of expressed views more than social media participants. Conversely, RAC members gave less positive ratings on PPEET items related to feeling heard. Qualitative findings highlighted differences in the nature of interactions across groups, but agreement around trust and similar recommendations for promoting participation in genomic research across engagement methods.

What makes first-semester students stay engaged in non-mandatory lecture-based courses? This study aims to answer this question by analyzing the relationship between student engagement with autonomy support and achievement goals. Data gathered through self-reports from 340 students attending four introductory lecture-based courses at four German universities were used to test the following hypotheses: (1) students who pursue goals for self-improvement display emotional, behavioral, and cognitive engagement, (2) emotional engagement is predicted by students’ perceptions of autonomy support, and (3) students who aim to outperform their peers display higher emotional engagement compared to cognitive engagement. After confirming the hypotheses with multiple regression analyses, additional results indicated a statistically significant relationship between both emotional engagement and achievement goals with autonomy. Further, results indicate a moderate positive association between emotional engagement and both behavioral and cognitive engagements. These findings confirm the presence of both mastery and performance goals in courses with a lecture-based teaching. This study highlights some limitations for statistical analyses with agentic engagement as well as the need to analyze study participants’ school culture for further research on student engagement.
