Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis studies the re-definition of social norms linked to children and their parents in the context of post-communist transition in Estonia. It does so by analyzing the institution of child protection in Estonia, which mainly looks after "problem" children and parents, i. E. Families who experience difficult situations in the social and family spheres. The first and foremost aim of the institution is to avoid the dislocation of the parent-child couple ; and this objective is radically opposed to the soviet model of sending children to the orphanage

Pełny tekst źródłaTutoring interactions refer to the Vygotsky's concept of zone of proximal development, in which the infant's developmental potential is supported by a more competent partner. Most empirical studies investigating the vygostskyan thesis focuses on parental instructional behavior fostering the child's development. On the other hand, researches on the influence of the child himself or his characteristics on parental scaffolding are scarce. So, the purpose of this study is to explore if, independently of a parental responsiveness on the developmental level of child, parental scaffolding can be influence by the child's characteristics, like among the down syndrome children, for example. Three groups of 12 non deficient children (14, 18 and 22 months) and three groups of 12 down syndrome children matched on mental age, have been videotaped with their parent during a problem solving situation (sorter task). The results indicate that, with young children of equivalent developmental level, parent's behaviors change according to they're in interaction with non deficient children or down syndrome children. Indeed, parent's instructions of non deficient children change as infants gain more mastery, providing more concrete and specific instructions with youngest and less explicit, less concrete and more verbal at the end of the second year. On the contrary, parent's of down syndrome children request, even at earlier ages, a self-governing action. The discussion closely examines the implications of influence of characteristics of down syndrome children on parental scaffolding

Pełny tekst źródłaWe compare the communicative behaviour within the duos fathers-infant and mothers-infant within one culture (intracultural comparison) then those between France and the Czech Republic (intercultural comparison). Thus we examined the structural, functional and pragmatic aspects of the parents-child communication. To realise this approach we have chosen the situation of the reading of an illustrated book. We worked with middle-class families. The infants are first born, aged between 30 and 36 months, living with their two parents. The total number of subjects is 28. The children are divided in a balanced way: 14 French and 14 Czech, and in every sample 7 boys and 7 girls. Thus our results indicate, that indeed in the one hand, the culture plays the role of universal factor which determines the way of the communicating in the family and, in the other hand the culture seems to act as a factor of specification which is linked to the country of origin

Pełny tekst źródłaThis research started in Xalapa, in Veracruz, Mexico. Its objective is to improve the knowledge of parental participation and involvement in preschool education. One hundred and ninety-two parents, who had enrolled their child in one of the twenty-one participating kindergartens, were selected. The parents answered a questionnaire that we gave to them. With an exploratory analysis of the collected data, our objective was to understand not only differences but also the similarities between the parents and their involvement in the preschool environment; to identify the parent's way of participating and also their involvement; to discover the different activities in which the parents participated; to show the different elements that determine the parents implication in their child's preschool education; to evaluate the teachers role in the activities designed for the parents, and finally to determine the benefits for the child due to the parents participation. We analysed the answers from different perspectives: financial support for the kindergarten and their work schedule. Amongst the results found were that women's involvement is more important than the man's. The parent's past perception and their school experiences define their involvement in their child's preschool education. Finally, to have and maintain good relationship between family and the kindergarten is part of the day-to-day work of teachers and that is also a requirement for the parents

Pełny tekst źródłaOne of the most important contempory mutations in the family, is the increasing number of children living with one parent and his new mate, i. E. , in stepfamilies. This work falls into three parts : the state of current research and theory on stepfamilies, and two empirical surveys. The first part deals with the evolution of the research on stepfamilies from 1987 to 1997. Everywhere a more dynamic approach to this phenomenon has prevailed. American researchers have been studying the effects of family structures. As for French sociologists, they mainly focus on the elusive social norms and behavioral caste differences in stepfamilies. Further more, sociologists have started collaborating with anthropologists on the various forms of kinship, and the norm of exclusive parenthood which characterizes western culture. The second part is about popular stereotypes on stepparents. Traditional literature has always presented us with the stories of wicked stepfathers and stepmothers, while nowadays popular books, children literature, and the media, show a positive image of and even glorify the new "tribes. " the third part examines the result of a survey conducted with sixty parents and children involved in stepfamilies. The data suggest that the stepfather only plays a secondary role in the education of the children. The protagonists'background shapes the relationship between stepparent and stepchild which is tighly related to the other relationships within the family network, and above all to the mother-child bond. The interviewed stepchildren seem not to conform to the social pattern of the new extended network. Their halfsiblings are their true brothers, but, contrarily to what the new myths would have us believe, neither their stepparent, nor their stepsiblings belong to their own family. The stepfamilies where coparenting is the rule are scarce. Most of them seem to be mother-centered, as it is usually the norm in the single- parent family

Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this research project is to document the association between parents’ experiences of childhood maltreatment (CM) and their subsequent parenting behaviors and to further our understanding of the processes and variables influencing this association. First, a meta-analysis of studies that have examined the association between mothers’ exposure to CM and their subsequent parenting behaviors towards their 0-6 years old children was conducted. The potential impact of both conceptual and methodological moderators has also been tested. A total of 32 studies were retained for analysis and results reveal a small but statistically significant association between maternal exposure to CM and parenting behavior (r = –.13, p < .05). Moderator analyses reveal that the association between CM and parenting are of greater magnitude when parenting measures involved relationship-based or negative, potentially abusive behaviors, when samples have greater proportions of boys compared to girls, and when studies were older versus more recent. Second, an empirical study was conducted in order to replicate the findings suggesting an association between mothers’ exposure to CM and maternal sensitivity and to test its potential underlying mechanisms. While previous studies have suggested that maternal (i.e., psychosocial adjustment, attachment state of mind) and environmental (low- vs high-risk) characteristics partially explain the association between CM and parenting, none of these studies have considered all these variables together. This second study thus aimed to test the potential mediating or moderating effect of these variables on the association between CM and parenting outcomes as well as their direct effect on maternal sensitivity. Results replicated the association between CM and lower maternal sensitivity of mothers of 18-months-old children. Together with CM, risk and attachment state of mind were all predictive of maternal sensitivity. However, no mediation effect was found, suggesting that while all these variables act simultaneously, we remain uncertain as how they interact with each other. Results also revealed that psychosocial adjustment acts as a moderator of the association between CM and maternal sensitivity, the association being stronger for mothers presenting fewer adjustment difficulties.

Pełny tekst źródłaImmigrant parents of a child with a disability show more signs of vulnerability than other parents. This situation can reduce their availability and alter their involvement in their child’s rehabilitation program. The objective of this doctoral thesis is to determine the expectations and needs of these parents, in order to provide them with assistance adjusted to their living conditions as the child grows. First, a scoping review of the scientific literature is carried out to improve the understanding of existing knowledge on immigrant parent support (Chapter 1). The twenty selected publications indicate that informational support is the most needed, about the child’s condition, the functioning of the healthcare, the social, and the educational systems in the host country, or the support services. Furthermore, the transmission of information may be hampered by non-mastery of the host country’s official languages, or because of intercultural differences between immigrant parents and stakeholders. In regard to the non-use of formal supports, it seems mainly due to the inadequate response of formal services to parent’s expectations, unawareness about parental support services opportunities, and non-perceived exhaustion. Given the few number of documented scientific writings, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 immigrant parents of a child with disabilities in the province of Quebec (Canada) as part of a larger study about their communication with stakeholders in early childhood (Chapter 2). The purpose of this second study is to improve the understanding of formal support services use by immigrant parents and the factors influencing their choices. It is worth mentioning that the data gathered is very focused on child services. Informational support and support for decision-making are the formal supports most used by parents, followed by educational support, active listening and financial assistance. Five factors appear to determine the use of formal support to parents: (1) their perception of the child’s condition, (2) access to information, (3) their strategies and capacity to act, (4) the involvement of the informal network, and (5) their perception of their need for support services. Following this first exploratory analysis, new semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight immigrant parents of children of different ages in Montreal and Quebec, to deepen the theme of the use of formal support intended to parents as the child grows (Chapter 3). The interview guide designed for this study focuses on the expectations and needs of immigrant parents to achieve a balance in all aspects of their lives. After an exploratory thematic analysis of the speech of parents and the application of a model of stress and coping, seven main sources of tension are highlighted: (1) the migratory path, (2) the child’s condition, (3) the social and healthcare functioning in the host country, (4) the professional integration, (5) the parent’s relationship, (6) their social network, and (7) the parental health. To cope with these stressful circumstances, immigrant parents mainly use financial assistance, informational support, support for decision-making, educational assistance and transportation support. The expressed satisfaction varies, particularly because of the differences between the expectations and the received services (educational support, active listening, child care), and in terms of the amount of aid received (financial support, information, assistance to decision). An original theoretical model can map the context of the parents in terms of expectations, needs and used supports. If certain periods of the child's life can lead to more stress for parents (diagnosis, school transition, transition to adulthood), the use of the formal supports is further explained by the migratory journey.

Pełny tekst źródłaMany researchers have studied lexical and pragmatic-discursive particularities of the language that parents use to address their young child. A literature review shows that there are both differences and similarities between mothers and fathers. However, characteristics of the language that parents use for addressing their child have rarely been studied. Moreover, there is a paucity of studies examining the effects on the child’s syntactic development of dialogue, speech genres and activities during which parent-child dyads interact. This thesis has three goals: i) improve understanding of differences and similarities in the syntactic and pragmatic-discursive aspects of maternal and paternal language and their effect on the child’s language, ii) evaluate the effect of the ongoing activity on the production and the use of mother-child and father-child dyads, iii) investigate the relation between syntactic and pragmatic-discursive dimensions during the language learning process.Seven 3-4 years old native French-speaking children and their parents were observed during two activities: a symbolic play and a picture card game. The syntactic dimensions of their productions were analyzed while considering certain discursive and pragmatic properties related to the use of these productions (status of the child’s interlocutor, type of activity and pragmatic-discursive aspects). Our results suggest that the status of the child’s interlocutor, associated with the type of activity and the dialogue’s specificities, form a body of variables that should be taken into account in order to better describe children’s syntactic uses and their variability

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study explores the capacity of young children to adapt their communicative behaviors to the social situation. More specifically, we investigate if young children's communicative behaviors differ with fathers and mothers. Past research shows that fathers are more oriented toward task accomplishement than and that mothers are more cooperative intercolutors than fathers. We examine whether young children seem to take into account these characteristics while communicating with their parents. The variation of communicative behaviors are analyzed from two points of view : a) the distribution of the functions and the contents of messages with each parent and b) the form of request reformulations in communication breakdown situations. The results of these two studies show that young children's communicative behaviors are different with fathers and mpthers. Children produce messages linked to task accomplishment more often with father than with mothers while they produce messages not linked to taks accomplishment more often with mothers. These differences also concern messages which initiate conversations. An analysis of parents' behaviors shows results which are similar to those found for children. As regards the study concercing request reformunaltions, children's reformulations are more "demanding" with mothers than with fathers. In conclusion, it seems that young children adapt their communicative behaviors according to the characteristics of each parent

Pełny tekst źródłaThe mother-child relationship and the special bond between mother and baby are a topic that has for long interested theorists and has made way for interesting works and posture throughout the years. This research reviews the main contributions made on the mother-baby bond topic in Europe and America. The cases of 25 adolescent mothers in Quilpue (Chile) are investigated. Five of these women are from the Mapuche Native community. Those women are monitored during their pregnancy and for the first months after the birth of their child, in order to determine the kind of bond created between them and the intergenerational transmission influencing this bond. For the first time in Chile, the CAMIR (adult-adult) and the RAF (adult-baby) tests are applied so as to contribute with new information on the subject

Pełny tekst źródłaThere is a lack of resources for nurses to work effectively with parents to increase physical activity of their preschooler. It is important to intervene given the problems of overweight and the low level of physical activity among young children. Based on the theory of planned behavior and other constructs, this study aims to identify the determining factors of parents’ intent to incite their children aged 3 to 5 years to be more active. A total of 282 parents, attending 35 child care centers in Quebec, completed a self-administered questionnaire in this descriptive correlational study. Results indicate that the perception of control, the social influence, the moral norm, the attitude, the regularity, and the amount of parents’ physical activity explained 75% of the variance of parents’ intention. These findings could be used to develop an intervention to improve or consolidate parents’ intent to increase their child’s physical activity.

Pełny tekst źródłaWhat does underlie the specific vision of parents of mentally deficient adults about their child's sexuality ? In order to answer this question, we have collated empirical studies and psychoanalytical theories. We proposed two hypotheses. First, we assumed that the child mental deficiency leads the parent to keep an idea of the telationship with his son or his daughter favouring an aspect of symbiosis and proximity rather than autonomy. Secondly, we assumed that the parent vision about sexuality is related to his/her conception of the relationship between the parent and the mentally deficient adult. .

Pełny tekst źródłaIntroduction: Children living with a motor impairment tend to have fewer opportunities to play. Thus, parents have a pivotal role in the exploration and facilitation of playfulness for these children. Hence, there is a need to describe how parents and their children living with a motor impairment, experience playful co-occupations. Objectives: This study aims to explore playful co-occupations, as experienced by parents of preschoolers living with a motor impairment, and situating how these co-occupations occur. Methods: Through a hermeneutical phenomenological design, six parents of children living with a motor impairment shared the meaning and their experiences of playful co-occupations. Data collection consisted of two semi-structured interviews and participative observations of the parent-child interactions in the participants' home environment. Analysis consisted of an interpretative analysis of interviews' and observations' data. Analysis was done through open coding, elaboration of successive syntheses and the use of hermeneutic circle principle to capture the essence of the experiences. Playful co-occupations rest on scripts co-constructed by the parent-child transaction. These evolutive scripts are freely and naturally co-created. Playful co-occupations transform participants' daily lives into precious moments for the parent and the child. These co-occupations allow the dyad to experience moments of normalcy. The context is decisive for the manifestation of playful co-occupations. Results suggest that recommended exercises presented as ‘playful' activities and integrated into the daily life, jeopardize playful co-occupations. Conclusion: Playful co-occupations are meaningful in the daily life of the parent and his child. The results of the study invite research and clinical intervention to recognize playful co-occupations' value by seeking to preserve and facilitate them.

Pełny tekst źródłaDuring three last decades, the principal prospects for study of the psychosocial development of the young child especially were interested in the dyad mother child and more recently in the dyad father-child. If the influence of each one of these partners could be highlighted, the majority of these studies consider only insulation these relations, thus omitting a reflexion on the social system in which are taken and these various interpersonal relations develop. The study of the family system appears today essential to continue in our comprehension of the early psychosocial development. Our research is a proposal for an application empirical of the eco-systemic model of the development. French families (N = 52) and Quebecois (N = 41) having an old child from 18 to 42 months took part in our study. We thus sought to highlight the interdependence of the marital couple, of the practices educational of the parental couple and the relations socio-emotional of the young child with his parents. An analysis centered on the variables, then centered on the subject, enabled us to underline the multidimensional aspect and systemic of these various family relations. Our analyses underline the important predictive capacity of each one of our subsystems on the development socio-emotional of the child. We release two models of operation thus : a first based on the mediator role of the educational practices in the influence of the marital couple on the development of the child, and a second based on the interaction of the marital couple and the educational practices

Pełny tekst źródłaAbstract: The increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) puts pressure on the healthcare system. Parent-mediated interventions are an interesting alternative to answer the needs of families having a toddler with a diagnosis or a suspicion of ASD. However, few researchers have looked at parents’ experience during parent-mediated interventions even though parents are the main actors of these interventions. This sequential explanatory mixed study aims to evaluate a 12-week parent-mediated intervention for young children with a suspicion of ASD aged between 12 and 30 months by considering both parents’ and children’s outcomes. Methods: For the quantitative part (crossover randomized controlled trial), the 19 parent-child dyads were randomized either in the Intervention group or the Waitlist group (participants in this group had to wait three months before getting access to the intervention). Data were collected through questionnaires and direct observation three to four times depending on the group allocation. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as between and within group comparisons. For the qualitative part (exploratory), semi-directed interviews conducted with a subsample of six participants were analyzed thematically. Results: The program was globally highly appreciated (median score = 3.625/4). Specifically, there was a significant positive effect of the intervention on parent-child dyadic engagement (p = .012; effect size = .51). Furthermore, there was a normalization of children’s cognitive (p = .010; effect size = .57) and motor abilities (p = .071; effect size = .38) after the 12-week program. The near absence of effect on parental well-being could be fixed by targeting specifically parental support rather than focusing on their skills development. Conclusion: The parent-mediated intervention brings promising benefits on the proximal outcome (parent-child interactions) and, to a lesser extent, on distal outcomes (children development, parental well-being and social validity). Still, the intervention should be adapted to better answer parental needs.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study analyses the strategies used by migrant parents when they have a « singular child », a child that is different from the others and reminds them a vulnerability, by his suffering, his difficulties or by the feeling for strangeness he provokes. The representations parents use in order to think about such a child often concern his “ontological nature”. Five families from West African origin have been interviewed in order to analyse the strategies of mixing different types of representations that can be found in the parent’s representations of such a “singular child”. The study is based on the work of the ethnopsychoanalysts of the Bobigny School. On the level of methods, some aspects of the grounded theory approach by Glaser and Strauss (1967) have been integrated. While developing Obeyesekere’s notion of personal symbols, the study proposes to distinguish four different elements that appear in the parent’s strategies of mixing representations: 1) creativity, 2) the use of cultural representations for the symbolization of unconscious conflicts, 3) the reorganisation of identities 4) the question of difference and bounds between oneself and the other. With the description of the principal factors that characterise the strategies of mixing cultures, the research proposes a way of looking at hybridity that stresses the importance of creativity in the elaboration of new identities and shows how this process may help migrants to develop more agency. Thinking about the difficulties of a child in migration often mobilises a creative process of mixing representations which may provoke profound changes in the relation between the child and his parents, at least if they are heard and supported in their process of thinking and redefining their cultural identity

Pełny tekst źródłaParents of an autistic child go through many periods of transition which may be perceived as stressful. Bruchon-Schweitzer and Dantzer (1994) developed a model to study the coping behaviours, which takes into account both the stressors and transactional processes. Until now, many researches have focused on stress endured by parents and strategies used by them to cope with the disorder of their child. However, those considering the impact of autism on quality of life are not frequent and, to the best of our knowledge, no French study analysed the effects of interaction between these factors yet. We met 160 parents who filled out several questionnaires and self-rating scales we have adapted or created for assessing: (1) information about the child and the family situation; (2) perceived stress; (3) perceived social support; (4) perceived control; (5) coping strategies and (6) quality of life. These instruments have satisfying psychometric properties, and our results provide some interesting elements for clinicians and support the already existing data: Autism puts a strain on the life of parents who, as a consequence, would need more substantial breaks in their daily life. The results also support our hypotheses: The child's autonomy, his or her school and social insertion, as well as the partnership between parents and professionals are at the root of successful adaptation. Finally, they indicate the relevance of a program for parents focused on the management of stress and emotions, adjustment of cognitions and resolution of problems
