Streszczenie:
Methodologies for end use analysis have been developed by different researchers in the energy and water fields and in different areas in the world over the last 20 years. While there are core features associated with the methodologies and models used, the differences can provide insight into the ways that they might be improved, as well as the differences that may be required in different regions and when models are used for different purposes. In addition to reviewing the field of end use analysis and appliance stock models, this paper will focus on two case studies. The first is the Sydney Water End Use Model, developed as part of the Sydney Water Least Cost Planning Study. This model has been developed and used to project the demand for water in Sydney over the next 20 years under business as usual scenario, as well as allow the projection of a number of scenarios which include major investment in water efficiency and effluent reuse programs as well as regulatory options to improve the efficiency of water using appliances in stalled in new buildings. Key features of the Sydney Water End Use Model include the fact that it takes into account the fact that the efficiency of toilets in Australia has a much larger range than (say) the US, in that the dual flush toilet was introduced in (to date) three stages. The model also accounts for projections of demographic and land use change which has been particularly dramatic in Sydney, particularly the movement to smaller occupancy rates in dwellings, and towards multi-family residential dwellings. The second case study will demonstrate the linkages between end use modeling of energy using and water using appliances. A model of residential energy use in Australia has been developed as part of a research project to develop greenhouse abatement scenarios for Australia, and many of the appliances modeled overlap with the water end use model, including clothes washing machines, dishwashers, showerheads and taps. This more recent modeling exercise has revealed the importance of key assumptions in standard stock modeling techniques, and highlighted the need for earlier starting dates for stock modeling. The process and results of these two case studies will be presented, and conclusions drawn about further improvements in end use analysis for both water and energy use. The linkage between the use of backcasting as a planning tool, and the use of end use analysis as a pre-requisite for the development of a demand management program is highlighted.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – This paper aims to argue on the efficiency of Quality of Service (QoS)-based adaptive streaming with regards to perceived quality Quality of Experience (QoE). Although QoS parameters are extensively used even by high-end adaptive streaming algorithms, achieved QoE fails to justify their use in real-time streaming videos with high motion. While subjective measurements of video quality are difficult to be applied at runtime, objective QoE assessment can be easier to automate. For end-to-end QoS optimization of live streaming of high-motion video, objective QoE is a more applicable approach. This paper contributes to the understanding of how specific QoS parameters affect objective QoE measurements on real-time high-motion video streaming. Design/methodology/approach – The paper approached the question through real-life and extensive experimentation using the Skype adaptive mechanisms. Two Skype terminals were connected through a QoS impairment box. A reference video was used as input to one Skype terminal and streamed on one direction. The impairment box was stressing the stream with different conditions. Received video was stored and compared against the reference video. Findings – After the experimental analysis, the paper concludes that adaptive mechanisms based on QoS-related heuristics fail to follow unexpected changes to stream requirements. High-motion videos are an example of this variability, which makes the perceived quality sensitive to jitter more than to packet loss. More specifically, Skype seems to use if-else heuristics to decide its behavior to QoS changes. The weaknesses to high-motion videos seem to lie on this rigidity. Research limitations/implications – Due to the testbed developed, the results may be different if experiments are run over networks with simultaneous streams and a variety of other traffic patterns. Finally, other streaming clients and algorithms would contribute to a more reliable generalization. Practical implications – The paper motivates video streaming engineers to emphasize their efforts toward QoE and end-to-end optimization. Originality/value – The paper identifies the need of a generic adaptive streaming algorithm able to accommodate a big range of video characteristics. The effect of QoS variability to high-motion video streaming helps in modeling and design.

Streszczenie:
The city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia has been recognised as having high quality drinking water, but like other urban cities in the world, its growing population means increasing water demand. Melbourne is also already on its eight year of dry climatic conditions and is currently experiencing a drought that forced water authorities to impose water restrictions after 20 years of unrestricted supply. The current drought, dwindling supplies and possible impact of climate change highlight the importance of making better use of this precious resource. The Water Resources Strategy has been developed for Melbourne, which serve as the basis for the Victorian Government to set per capita consumption reduction targets of 15%, 25% and 30% by 2010, 2015 and 2020 respectively. The strategy was developed to ensure a continuation of a safe, reliable and cost effective water supply that is environmentally sustainable in the long term. This is in recognition that population growth and water consumption will eventually require additional supplies of water (Water Resources Strategy Committee for the Melbourne Area 2002). One of the key findings of the National Land and Water Resources Audit's Australian Water Resources Assessment 2000 is the lack of detailed knowledge about the end use (Australian Water Association 2001). The residential sector in the U.S. is responsible for about 20% of the country's primary energy use (EIA, 2011). Studies estimate that efficiency improvements in this sector can reduce household energy consumption by over 25% by 2020 (McKinsey Global Energy and Materials, 2009). In this thesis, given the increasing amount of attention that both policy-makers and industry are giving to residential energy use, I examine the implications of end-use electrification and efficiency improvements in households. In particular, I focus on high efficiency electric technologies for heating and cooling (referred to as HVAC) needs. Advancements in technologies such as heat pumps are beginning to make the economic case for switching from end-uses of gas to end-uses of electricity in the residential sector. I examine the implications of such end-use electrification, ranging from its impact on energy consumption to its contribution to the abatement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. I use the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model, a computable general equilibrium model, to analyze the research question. The EPPA model captures full economy-wide impacts of policy mandates and technology changes. First, I added further detail to household energy consumption in the model. Then, I introduced technology changes corresponding to advanced electric technologies for residential heating and cooling and tested their impact with policies that either support or inhibit their entry into the marketplace. I find two interesting results from the analysis. First, if policies are enacted to support advanced electric HVAC technologies, they displace end-uses of gas and increase household electricity consumption. Second, household end-use electrification in the U.S. leads to an increase in overall emissions in the economy, given that the overall emissions of any electric appliance depend not only on the end-use efficiency of the appliance but also on the efficiency of generating and distributing electricity. Thus, end use electrification only helps in emissions abatement if the power sector becomes less carbon intensive.

Network simulations often output a log file, which must be parsed to understand the details of the simulation. Visualizations of these simulations are used to make debugging and analysis easier, and there are many visualizers that will display the simulation in 2D. Those in 3D do not fully utilize 3D graphics operations to visualize asimulation. This thesis explores the ways 3D graphics can be used to further enhance a visualization. To do this, it introduces a new network simulator and a visualizer, consisting of an analyzer, which collects statistics about a simulation, and a renderer, which leverages an existing program package for rendering.

Streszczenie:
Purpose –The purpose of this research is to increase knowledge about how a led fitting impacts the environment. To be able to fulfil the purpose, it has been broken down into four research questions: • RQ1: What is the environmental impact during transportation? • RQ2: What is the environmental impact during the use phase? • RQ3: What is the environmental impact during the end of life phase? • RQ4: How can the environmental impact be decreased? Method: The authors worked abductive in the relation between theories and empirical data. The authors conducted a case study at a Swedish company in Jönköping. The case study covers a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). The LCA includes four different stages; goal, scope & boundary definition, life-cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment and interpretation. During the stages the authors carried out a pre study, interview, document study and calculations. To find out more information about the problem area a literature study was conducted. Theoretical material was received from books, peer review articles and reports. The literature study and the case study increased the authors knowledge to answer the research questions. Findings: The research findings indicate that transportation, Use- and end of life phase impact the environment in different amounts of greenhouse gases (CO2e). The transportation from production to customer stands for 0,16 kg CO2e, the use phase for 15,6 kg CO2e and end of life for 0,5 kg CO2e. The environmental impact can be decreased if companies both deal with the issue to make products more sustainable during the entire life cycle. The transportation’s environmental impact can be decreased through reduction of CO2 emission, which is the dominated greenhouse gases during road freight transportation. The use phase environmental impact can be decreased if adapting a more efficient consumption system. Another way to minimize the environmental impact is to offer and implement maintenance and repairing. The end of life environmental impact can be decreased by recycling or reuse the materials. Another way to lower the impact is to have a holistic perspective when choosing material. Lastly the impact can be decreased if companies, already in the design stage to think about the products last phase. Implications: The practical implications in this study is the case study. The case study contributed with knowledge about the environmental impact of a led fitting. The study has not contributed with any new theories. The study is based on a problem statement with already amount of existing theories and developed tools to calculate the environmental impact. Even if the study did not contribute theoretically, it strengthens already existing theories or statement from other researchers. Limitations: The research ability to generalize can be questioned since the research was limited to a single case study. This can affect the generalizability of the result. Streszczenie:
Context Spyware is “computer software that obtains information from a user's computer without the user's knowledge or consent” [25]. Spyware is often embedded in another application and is usually stated in End User License Agreement (EULA) [20]. However it is quite common to accept the EULA without even reading it. Therefore beside the traditional spyware analysis techniques, automated EULA analysis can be helpful for common users in order to identify the spyware [18]. Objectives The techniques of automated EULA analysis do exist however the process of taking a binary application, analyze it, and prepare it in order to extract the EULA has not been studied in existing research. There is a need for such a tool that can extract and analyze the EULA text from an installer binary without executing it. Objectives of this research are to investigate the techniques to unpack the binary file, extract the EULA, analyze it and present the analysis results to the end user. Methods In order to establish basic understanding of the related concepts preliminary study is done. In this study a number of article sources are used, including ACM Digital Library, Compendex, Inspec, IEEE Xplore, and Springer Link. Material has been selected after reading titles and summaries. Prototype of an open source tool is designed and developed. This tool extracts the EULA from executable binary installers, analyzes the extracted text and gives suggestions about legitimate level of the software. Results To evaluate our application we downloaded 150 executables from different web sites, which were already classified as bad or good by [23]. We used our tool to extract EULA text from executables. We were able to extract EULA from 48 percent of selected binary files. Analysis of extracted EULAs was also done to classify the software as good or bad. This analysis assists the user to make a decision to accept or reject the installation of software without reading even a single word of EULA. During the extraction and analysis process there was no significant impact on performance of the host system. Conclusion We conclude that EULA can be extracted from a binary file without executing it. However because of limited time it was not possible to extract EULA from all installer binaries. The rate of EULA extraction can be improved in future research.

The Quality of Service (QoS) is already a major concern for operators, but things are changing and, although in many cases better QoS results in better Quality of Experience (QoE), fulfilling the required performance parameters is not a synonym of satisfied users. QoE conditions can immediate response on the user satisfaction and thus the goal of QoS assurance should be to promote a better QoE. This will give the operator a deeper sense of the contribution of network’s performance to the overall level of customer satisfaction in terms of reliability, availability, scalability, speed, accuracy and efficiency. The main goal of this work is to provide operators with mechanisms for end user behaviour analysis and at the same instant detailed network status. With this information operators know the end users behaviour in a certain region, know in detail network performance metrics and can adapt QoS mechanisms to fulfil end users expectations.

Streszczenie:
AbstractBatch runs corresponding to the same recipe usually have different duration. The data collected by the sensors that equip batch production lines reflects this fact: time series with different lengths and unsynchronized events. Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) is an algorithm successfully used, in batch monitoring too, to synchronize and map to a standard time axis two series, an action called alignment. The online alignment of running batches, although interesting, gives no information on the remaining time frame of the batch, such as its total runtime, or time-to-end. We notice that this problem is similar to the one addressed by Survival Analysis (SA), a statistical technique of standard use in clinical studies to model time-to-event data. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms adapted to survival data exist, with increased predictive performance with respect to classical formulations. We apply a SA-ML-based system to the problem of predicting the time-to-end of a running batch, and show a new application of DTW. The information returned by openended DTW can be used to select relevant data samples for the SA-ML system, without negatively affecting the predictive performance and decreasing the computational cost with respect to the same SA-ML system that uses all the data available. We tested the system on a real-world dataset coming from a chemical plant.

AbstractJANI-model [6] is a model interchange format for networks of interacting automata. It is well-entrenched in the quantitative model checking community and allows modeling a variety of systems involving concurrency, probabilistic and real-time aspects, as well as continuous dynamics. Python is a general purpose programming language preferred by many for its ease of use and vast ecosystem. In this paper, we present Momba, a flexible Python framework for dealing with formal models centered around the JANI-model format and formalism. Momba strives to deliver an integrated and intuitive experience for experimenting with formal models making them accessible to a broader audience. To this end, it provides a pythonic interface for model construction, validation, and analysis. Here, we demonstrate these capabilities.

AbstractIn this paper, we present an overview of the MOVING platform, a user-driven approach that enables young researchers, decision makers, and public administrators to use machine learning and data mining tools to search, organize, and manage large-scale information sources on the web such as scientific publications, videos of research talks, and social media. In order to provide a concise overview of the platform, we focus on its front end, which is the MOVING web application. By presenting the main components of the web application, we illustrate what functionalities and capabilities the platform offer its end-users, rather than delving into the data analysis and machine learning technologies that make these functionalities possible.

Streszczenie:
Abstract High quality geometry creation is a key step in the design process for complex modern turbomachinery subsystems such as an annular combustor assembly. In particular, parametric generation of 3D CAD geometry is an enabler for design studies and multi-disciplinary analysis. In a traditional approach, 3D CAD models are either created in a bespoke manner with respect to the engine of interest or if a parametric approach is used, the geometry is for one particular combustor configuration, which typically leads to insufficient flexibility for topological variations. In either of these cases for every combustor design, substantial manual efforts are involved in geometry creation as well as in geometry manipulation towards creation of a truncated sector model suitable for meshing and analysis. A more flexible and fully parametric approach in highly integrated and automated design processes during all product design phases is therefore necessary. The present paper focuses on the exploitation and integration of a novel geometry modelling approach into an existing and well-established combustor design and analysis system called Prometheus in order to achieve a massive step toward a fully End-to-End (E2E) system. The new system is enabling rapid combustor design and analysis by combining feature-based geometry modelling approach that enables automatic creation of an analysis compatible combustor assembly with a geometry-centric optimization system. The automated design system can manipulate 3D geometry, to create necessary script files for meshing, simulation and post-processing for a typical CFD analysis, and execute the process to analyze different designs with respect to defined design objectives and constraints. The improved system enables engineers to assess different design concepts quickly early in the design process by providing best trade-offs between design objectives but also allows the use of detailed simulation models and boundary conditions in later more mature designs stages. The paper will discuss the robustness and flexibility of the underlying parametric CAD approach, how it augments the downstream processes, which is able to handle and translate significant topological changes throughout the E2E system. It will also clearly demonstrate the efficiency gain of the automated combustor design process, which enables design engineers to make better decision faster.

It is often of interest in studies of human movement to quantify the function of a muscle force or muscular joint torque. Such information is useful for the identification of the causes of movement disorders and for predicting the effects of interventions including surgical procedures, targeted muscle strengthening, focal treatments for spasticity, and functional electrical stimulation. One useful way to characterize the actions of muscle forces or muscular joint torques is to create linked-segment models of the body and analyze these linkages to determine the joint angular accelerations or end effector forces that result solely from the application of the muscle force or torque in question. Such induced acceleration (IA) analyses or induced end effector force (IEF) analyses have been applied most often to quantify muscle function during normal and pathological walking [1,2].

Streszczenie:
In many vessels with container, such as those involving rotating machinery, barrel casings are closed with disc shaped end covers on both axial sides. The end covers are fixed to the barrel casing with bolted joints or retaining devices. A shear key structure is often applied to pressurized vessels as a retaining device, because it can endure higher pressure than bolted joints can. Stress distribution in the shear key and the casing depends on the contact condition between the shear key and the casing. Thus, it is difficult to design a shear key structure merely by using Design-by-Formula procedures. We designed the shear key structure according to Design-by-Analysis procedures based on finite element (FE) analysis. By taking the contact condition between shear key and casing into consideration in an FE model and carrying out elastic and inelastic analyses, we developed a new shear key structure configuration. We will confirm the validity of the new shear key structure by means of pressure tests that will be conducted in May of 2009.
