The most time consuming and capital intensive portion in the assembly of power electronic devices is the test system. A comprehensive test system including functional and stress screening technologies can significantly increase assembly times and more than double the capital investment required in a new assembly line. The primary purpose of the test system is to screen components for early life failures and to verify proper assembly. Determination of key performance characteristics and the resultant test system are developed during the product design phase and are seldom revised after the product has been released to manufacturing. This thesis explores best practices in testing methods and develops new methods to analyze test system performance. Both efforts were conducted in an effort to optimize existing test regimes. Upon completion of the above analyses the existing test sequence was reduced by 50%. This was primarily due to a discovery in the Burn In test cycle which indicated that failures correlated strongly with the on/off cycles inherent in the test sequence. A new test cycle was proposed to accommodate this finding and test results verified the initial hypothesis. Additionally, the summary of best practices identified new forms of product testing including Highly Accelerated Stress Testing (HAST), moving additional product testing into the development phase consequently reducing testing requirements during assembly.

This thesis provides insight into methods for data analysis of testing procedures to optimize the overall testing times within the electronics manufacturing industry. By analyzing each test regime within the manufacturing sequence individually, with the goal of overall test time reduction, better test system optimization may occur. Specifically, within Burn In testing it was found that failure rates were heavily dependent upon the device on/off cycle. Once discovered new test cycles were proposed to reduce overall test times by 50%. Once implemented such new test cycles increased early failure capture as expected. In addition, industry benchmarking studies showed new forms of testing such as Highly Accelerated Stress Testing (HAST) are pushing the product testing earlier into the product life cycle where in-process tests such as Burn In may be reduced. In the case of HAST testing, the tests are being conducted in the design phase reducing more costly Burn In testing in the production phase.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis presents guidelines for how eco-design methods can be adapted to facilitate the introduction of ecologically responsible manufacturing in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Indian electronics industry. It also investigates the major opportunities and obstacles for eco-design to become a natural part of product design. This is urgent both from environmental and economic perspectives since the SMEs pollute a lot in proportion to their share of the total industrial production, and at the same time they are vulnerable for the increasing environmental demands on product design. The European Union recently introduced their directive on the Restriction of the Use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) which bans certain hazardous chemicals in electric and electronic device. For many producers that supply to the European market this was a wake up clock to start thinking about environmental aspects related to production.
The study was carried out as an interview and questionnaire study at three SMEs in the electronics industry. Additional interviews were held with informants in different organisations. It was concluded that for SMEs in the Indian electronics industry qualitative and semi-quantitative eco-design methods should be chosen before quantitative methods. Eco-design methods should resemble traditional methods that are already used in the companies. For the product developers to be able to work with eco-design more education and other solutions are needed to raise the environmental knowledge. Support and commitment from top management is also imperative. Methods should be developed to encourage the establishment of multi functional teams and early integration of environmental aspects in design projects.
The external demands on environmentally responsible manufacturing are expected to increase in the future. This will most likely have a positive influence on the environmental awareness in the industry, just as the RoHS directive has had. However, there are still economic and technical barriers that need to be bridged for SMEs in India to be able to work with eco-design. More cooperation and communication between academics, policy makers and the industry is needed to make it happen.

This research aims at proposing and testing a method for the assessment of the alignment between competitive criteria and Autonomation practices, using theoretical and empirical basis. In order to create a heuristic situation and to apply the proposed method, a case study was conducted at a company that manufactures high-tech electronic equipment. The comprehension of the constructs that represent the application of Autonomation is supported by the theoretical review of concepts involving Autonomation, its impact on the production system and the interaction with the competitiveness at the enterprise?s level. The elements that influence each construct in the production process are identified through a focus group. The indicators found were weighed and measured, allowing the identification and quantification of gaps. The results are analyzed and discussed from the viewpoint of Industrial Engineering, proposing a plan of actions and implications for the improvement of the assessed process. This thesis contributes to the construction and development of a model representing the relationships among constructs, competitive criteria, and factors of the application of Autonomation. It is considered that the proposed method approximates the operational approaches to strategic settings, avoiding isolated and inefficient initiatives in manufacturing. Thus, it can be seen as a managerial tool, which can be useful for supporting the achievement of a pre-established manufacturing strategy.

The electronic manufacturing industries in Taiwan are mainly OEM (Original Equipment Manufactures) and ODM (Original Design Manufactures). Since the major international customers push hard for cost down and precise delivery, it will be a must to implement VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) into the upstream supplier, control the costs and avoiding unnecessary stock & risk of shortage. As most of the components are customized, some specific and unique matters need to be take into consideration when implemented VMI. Base on paper study & experiences, this research summarizing the factors which will affect electronic manufacturing industries' introduced VMI into 4 categories (including 87 items) as item categories, management mechanism, laws & regulations and information technology according to 4 composition factors which are industry uniqueness, internal environment, external environment and assistance tools. Then use the Cause and Effect Diagram to analyze relationship between the efficiency of VMI introduction and the factors mentioned above, and finally summarized it into 12 models. In the end, the ways of VMI introduction will be divided into 9 steps, with a specific case as an example to explain how to use these reference models and introduction steps efficiently.

Since 2012, the German government approved the “High-Tech Strategy 2020’” action plan, including ”Industry 4.0” in its top 10 future projects. More and more research is exploring the industry. 4.0 and its new technologies. Recently, 3D printers, IoT, AI, smart manufacturing and other new terms have been discussed. However, does Industry 4.0 really changed our manufacturing industry? Differ from other researches, which study from the technical aspects. In this study, it is mainly discussing on the appearent of Industry 4.0.If does, what are the effects to Taiwan’s major industries – the electronics manufacturing industry (electronic components manufacturing, automation equipment, electronic test&measurement instruments and semiconductor) and how they decide their new business strategy. In this study, using the DuPont analysis as an financial indicators .to revert the resource allocation of the top companies in the electronics manufacturing industry. Additionally, using thed factor and cluster analysis todiscriminate which companies have been using the same operating strategy. These will help to divide into different strategic group and study the competitive advantages of each group. Mean while, the timeline was deived into two periods, firstly is from 2010 to 2013 and secondly is from 2014 to 2017. The impact of Industry 4.0 was identified by examining and comparing the strategic groups ofthese companies in these two periods. This study provide a strong evidence that the competitive environment of the electronics manufacturing industries has changed during the period of Industry 4.0. The appication of Industry 4.0 had revert the traditional strategies such as focusing mainly on sales capabilities, but , production capacity. Companies that invest more resources into fixed assets, that is, companies that can make their factories' production equipment more efficient through digitalization, networking and automation can get more benefits and open up gaps with competitors.

This study discovered that because the electronics manufacturing industry has faced global competitions, all Taiwan’s electronics manufacturers have been impacted, so as to cause the price competition with each other. With facing the saturation condition of clients for Taiwan’s domestic EMS providers, the virulent price competition among Taiwan’s electronics manufacturing industries, and the orders controlled by clients completely, they have resulted in the decrease of gross profit margin; therefore impacted on companies’ profit-making. The main difference between EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) providers, Taiwan’s OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) manufacturers in early days is that in addition to provide their clients with OEM services, EMS providers has also provided the peripheral services such as product development, logistics management, transportation, product maintenance and materials management to their clients. Most traditional OEM and ODM manufacturers are passively providing manufacturing services according to clients’ demands; in addition, since their service contents were simple assembly OEM, thus they had many competitors and highly replaceable. However, EMS providers are intending to be the virtual factories for their clients with providing flexible and elastic management services. In addition to inspect various key challenges and transformation that faced by EMS industries and their operating patterns; marketing strategy of overseas exhibition, development of European and Japanese clients, and small amount of customized manufacturing, this study also inspected how Taiwan’s EMS providers can look for the niche market from the Industry 4.0 advocate of global countries, in order to retake the market domination with their own advantages. This study thought that LH company’s future transformation strategy is to integrate the production manufacturing systems, transform from the production manufacturing into the manufacturing service, make use of the integration with the production information, material management and shipment information, change the production pattern into the provision of real-time production information service for clients, and make the production with the optimal process management and flexible production to shorten the time to market for their clients; in addition, through building the cross-industry alliance with clients to increase the interaction to support real-time service operation, so as to improve the key compatibility and clients’ trust

Owing to the characteristics of low technique threshold, high labor demand and huge fluctuation of market demand, the low efficiency of human resources allocation for the Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) industry is often induced with changing economic climate. Previous research rarely addressed the policy of human resources, and mostly developed production planning for only a single period. This causes the weakness of a low reaction to the variation of the market. Thus, our study proposes an aggregate production planning model as a better solution for EMS. Under satisfying the following conditions: material supply constraints, raw material prices, capacity limitation of each plant and the lead time of production and transportation into consideration, the model proposed contains many issues regarding human resource issues which includes labor hiring, discharge, training and cross-department labor transfer. We also develop a method to solve the model in order to figure out the accurate HR demand of every production period and the needed amount of backup HR. Because the model proposed is the NP-Complete problem in this study, the distributed and parallel computing method is exploited. To speed up the convergence of the solving procedure, both the upper and lower bounds for each solution scheme are found. There are two parts of Design of Experiments (DOE) as well as results analysis: For each part of the experiments, the levels of demand are arranged in the order of “rush- off” or “off- rush” to simulate multi- periods order variation. First, a small scale model is built to clarify the accuracy of our model and the feasibility of our solving procedure (distributed and parallel computing). According to the results, both distributed and parallel computing and single-machine computing generate the same optimal solution, but the former takes only one-tenth of the time to obtain the solution compared to the latter. In the final part, we design a large scale model in order to illustrate the advantage and the feasibility of distributed and parallel computing. The results show that distributed and parallel computing can obtain the approximate optimal solution in 11 hours, while it takes more than 80 hours for single machine computing. As a conclusion of this research, aggregate production planning not only effectively responds to t high variation of demand for the EMS industry, but also decreases the production cost. In addition, compared to other methods in the literature, distributed and parallel computing can approximate the optimal HR and order allocation much faster.

Owing to the high growth rate and revenue of global PC market, Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) enterprises in PC related (Notebook and Desktop) products become the major players in electronics manufacturing downstream industry in Taiwan. However, due to the demand to continue the growth, those main large EMS enterprises need not only to proceed successive interior investment, but also attempt to begin exterior growth strategies such as Merger and Acquisition(M&A), Joint Venture(JV) or strategy alliance. The purpose is for them to enlarge the gap among competitors, which the “economics scale” are formed and became a barrier for small and middle enterprises (SME). Those large EMS enterprises cross the border and enter the field of non-PC related products, and aggressively build up a vertical integration of the upstream supply chain. Therefore, superior enterprises which belong to the industry of non-PC related singular products, or SME supply chains that have business relations with first tier brand companies will be the target partner for large EMS in terms of M&A, JV or strategy alliance. We implement five force model and diamond model to analyze the development of electronics manufacturing downstream industry in Taiwan, and to discuss the strategy of growth towards those enterprises. Besides, we also probe into SME’s pressure while facing customers’ requests, intense industrial competition and aggressive potential competitors such as large EMS. Based on the above case study, we then adopt the corresponding policies. We believe that with limited resources, SME have failed to sustain high growth in order to meet customers’ demands. Under the circumstance, M&A and JV are maybe the best solution for SME. In other words, the successive “reinvestment risk” derives from “high growth” turns out to be one of the key factors to force SME executives for a more detailed consideration about cooperating with large EMS. We also found conformity with the development strategies of Taiwan electronics manufacturing downstream industry, and the result of our five-force analysis and diamond model analysis. In addition, due to the fact that Taiwan electronics manufacturing downstream industry have formed a highly entry barrier of “industry cluster”, the development of collectivization would deepen its characteristics. In this case, the global electronics manufacturing business could be mastered by most Taiwanese businessmen and become a positive encouragement for Taiwan electronics manufacturing downstream industry.

Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is a method of operational mode for inventory management in the environment of supply chain management. In essence, it is a concept for integrating unilateral supply chain inventory management issues into a single inventory management problem. Based on customers’ actual or forecasted demands and inventory levels inventory replenishment solutions can be obtained through VMI. Suppliers can learn sales information from customers’ demands messages and perform more effective plans for rapid responses to market changes and customer needs. In recent years, many companies have been integrating the resources of whole supply chain pipelines to form VMI supply chain strategic alliances between enterprises in order to reduce inventory costs and risks. To face today''s low-profit era in electronic manufacturing industry, companies hope to cooperate with its partners to implement VMI to reduce inventory costs, avoid unnecessary stockpiles and material shortages to increase supply flexibility and maintain companys’ competitive advantage. This study is to investigate why Taiwan''s IT industries import VMI management mechanisms? What related considerations are considered? What are the difficulties and solutions in the process of initiating and implementing VMI mechanism? And finally, what benefits can be brought up to enterprise for using VMI? By the case study, we have shown that VMI indeed contents many significant properties that can increase operating benefits, reduce inventory costs and effectively improve company’s inventory management system.

As technology improves every day, new developments have constantly infiltrated our lives. The market has become more intense because of the frequency that enterprises launched their products. Although enterprises had improved the quality of products as well as to the brand image to attract its customer, however, many companies are still facing the crisis. Due to those brand damage events, the reputation of the brand could break down overnight. How to provide the best remedy to make up for customers at the right time in order to save the damaged goodwill or to maintain customers brand attitude and royalty is a subject worthwhile a discussion. In August 2016, Samsung Electronics, this almost a hundred-year funded worldwide based corporation, has faced the biggest challenge ever. The new launched mobile phone which was considered as Samsung's annual diamond product called Galaxy Note 7, it has exploded by battery problem. In the day of the listing, there were actually not only one but many new phones spontaneous combustion caused by the battery overheating. The design of this paper is based on the Samsung mobile phone explosion. Through the scenario simulations, this paper is going to explore whether the different remedies will affect remedy results or brand's attitude. Furthermore, this paper is targeting at understanding in what remediation, customer would feel the most satisfactory after the service recovery in different crisis situations. Overall, the results have indicated that customers would not blame at enterprises when crisis incident belongs to external attributions. Meanwhile, it would be better if enterprises have also assisted customers for returned to the status before the error. By contrast, when crisis incident belongs to internal attributions, both customer satisfaction and perceived justice have significantly plunged no matter enterprises provided what service recovery methods. At this time, enterprises need to provide compensate. The result also shows that branding experience has moderating effect between crisis incidents and service recovery. After the recovery, customer satisfaction and perceived justice have outstanding positive effects on brand attitude.

Under the framework of the mentoring system, the researcher tries to explore the training culture for project managers in the electronic manufacturing industry, based on the current situation and history of the mentoring system. In terms of work performance, the researcher aims to understand the system’s influence on task performance, promotion, and performance review. In the aspect of career development, the researcher also endeavors to identify the influence of the mentoring system on professional competencies, potential, and social emotional supports. Through these studies, the researcher attempts to determine the key success factors of the mentoring system for project managers. The methodology this research adopts is based on the qualitative case study method. Information is collected through in-depth interviews with department heads, masters, and disciples. A total of ten employees from three companies have been selected for the interview. They are selected, through a convenience sampling approach, from the electronic manufacturing industry, including brands, consumer electronic products, and system suppliers. According to the cases study, the mentoring relationship can be categorized into three types, i.e., mentoring of newly-recruited junior employees, mentoring of newly-recruited senior employees, and mentoring upon request. The study shows that, except for one case, all masters and disciples have maintained good interactions in both work and personal life. Systematic teaching programs and regular performance tests are not the sole ways used by business owners to ensure the smooth operations of the mentoring system. In terms of the work performance of project managers, the mentoring system has great influence on their task performance in various aspects, such as the development of problem-solving abilities, professional abilities, and interpersonal skills, as well as the establishment of broader perspectives of the work and the organization. The system also affects the promotion of project managers, taking into account the managerial/professional skills and the business succession plan. In terms of career development, the mentoring system provides analysis on work competencies and potential of the project managers. The former includes analysis on the diversification of competencies, job assignment, performance evaluation, benefit systems and promotion. The latter includes analysis on the aggressiveness, potential, and competitiveness. In summary, the key success factors for mentoring system of the case studied include the commitments to establishing values and learning models to accumulate the tacit knowledge of employees; the construction of knowledge-transmitting platforms and work supports; mutual social-emotional support between masters and disciples; as well as the efforts to satisfy the respective needs of the department managers, masters and disciples. Finally, the researcher has come to the conclusion based on the findings of the study. It is hoped that these conclusions would be helpful to both future researchers and business owners who are interested in implementing mentoring systems for their companies. The researcher has also provided management suggestions for implementing mentoring systems in the electronic manufacturing industry. At the last part of this study, the researcher further shares his experience and feelings in the research process, highlights the possible restrictions, and provides recommendations for future researchers.

Well-being is a key factor for putting social change and life indicator under the microscope. The pursuit of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has led to an economic miracle in Taiwan for the past few decades; however, the relationship between the increasing wealth and people’s well-being remains questionable. Related research has shown that the increase of GDP does not relatively enhance well-being. Most research on workplace well-being in Taiwan has been focused on military teaching and the service industry, but few researchers have touched on the well-being of workers in electronics manufacturing services (EMS) factories, which are the most important of all Taiwan’s overall exports. This research is based on an analysis of the workplace well-being of female workers in the EMS industry and discusses the topic from their perspective using Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) as a tool to interview eight females who work in the warehouse. These are individual interviews, conducted face-to-face with pictures in order to investigate their needs and ideas. The interview data is collected and analyzed by ZMET with regard to perceiving the Conceptual Metaphor and Deep Metaphor of female workers’ well-being at the EMS factory. This research also contains a related discussion of the female workers’ well-being and suggestions.
