D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2008.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 169-174).<br>Different experiments on strongly correlated materials have shown phenomena which are not consistent with our conventional understandings. We still do not have a general framework to explain these properties. Developing such a general framework is much beyond the scope of this thesis, but here we try to address some of challenges in simpler models that are more tractable. In correlated metals it appears as strong correlations have different effect on different parts of fermi surface. Perhaps most striking example of this is normal state of optimally doped cuprates; the quasiparticle peaks on the nominal fermi surface do not appear uniformly. We try to track such phenomena in heavy fermion systems, which are correlated fermi liquids. In these systems, a lattice of localized electrons in f or d orbitals is coupled to the conduction electrons through an antiferromagnetic coupling. Singlets are formed between localized and conduction electrons. This singlet naturally have non-zero internal angular momentum. This nontrivial structure leads to anisotropic effect of strong correlations. Internal structure of Kondo singlet can also lead to quantum Hall effect in Kondo insulator, and formation of isolated points on the fermi surface with fractionalized quasiparticles. In the second part we study a phase transition in Heisenberg model between two insulating phases, Neel ordered and certain spin liquid state, popular in theories of the cuprates. The existence of such a transition has a number of interesting implications for spin liquid based approaches to the underdoped cuprates and clarifies existing ideas for incorporating antiferromagnetic long range order into such a spin liquid based approach. This transition might also be enlightening, despite fundamental differences, for the heavy fermion critical points where a second order transition between the heavy fermion phase and a metallic phase with magnetic antiferromagnetic order is observed.<br>by Pouyan Ghaemi Mohammadi.<br>Ph.D.

Bien que mon activité de recherche a été principalement axée sur la caractérisation structurale des phases d'Aurivillius en relation avec leurs propriétés ferroélectriques, je me suis aussi intéréssé à divers aspects liés à la synthèse de ces phases que ce soit sous forme de monocristaux, de poudres ou encore de films (voie chimique). Une première section consacrée à la synthèse ouvrira donc cette deuxième partie. Dès mon arrivée au SPCTS, une part importante de mon activité a été consacrée à l'étude des intercroissances à longues périodes qui ont pu être observées dans divers systèmes mais dont les caractéristiques structurales restaient inconnues. Sur la base de nos observations expérimentales, un modèle cristallographique généralisé utilisant le formalisme des groupes de super-espace a été développé pour les stuctures de type Aurivillius. Ce travail est issu d'une collaboration étroite avec l'équipe du Prof. J.M. Perez-Mato de l'Université de Bilbao. Cette nouvelle approche cristallographique et son utilisation constitueront la deuxième section. L'étude des relations structure/propriétés dans ces composés a constitué une autre part importante de mes recherches au SPCTS avec, notamment, le co-encadrement de la thèse de Jenny Tellier. Les divers aspects de la transition ferroélectrique-paraélectrique (FE-PE) rencontrés dans les composés de type Aurivillius ont été abordés que ce soit dans le cas des termes simples, des composés d'intercroissances que dans le cas, moins classique, des composés présentant un comportement ressemblant à celui de "relaxeurs" tel que Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3. Ce travail visant à décrire les mécanismes structuraux associés à la transition FE-PE fera l'objet de la troisième et dernière section.

In this thesis we use the Variational Cluster Approximation (VCA) in the investigation of broken symmetry states of strongly correlated systems with frustration. Layered organic compounds, in which dimers of organic molecules form an anisotropic triangular lattice, are among materials that show this frustration. We discuss the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model used for studying these compounds. Then we introduce VCA, which allows to study ordered phases by a variational principle based on the electron self-energy. We explain the computational methods that we used in conjunction with VCA. A comparison of the normal state and Néel antiferromagnetic ordered phase energies enables us to conclude that this order is dominant at large values of U, below some critical value of frustration (t'/t ). By observing the saturation of the order parameter, we argue that U [greater or approximately equal to] 8 is already in the strong coupling limit. d -wave superconductivity is discussed in relation with cluster and lattice point group symmetries. The two different pairings, d[subscript x[superscript 2]]-[subscript y[superscript 2]] and d[subscript xy] , are studied separately. A comparison of the energies of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases shows that while d -wave superconductivity dominates the antiferromagnetic phase, the d[subscript x[superscript 2]]-[subscript y[superscript 2]] order exists at intermediate U and d[subscript xy] is dominant at low values of U. We found no evidence of homogeneous coexistence of antiferromagnetic and d -wave superconducting phases. In addition, we investigate a spiral magnetic order on the isotropic triangular lattice, where no Néel antiferromagnetic order is found. By looking at the density of states, we see that the system is metallic at weak coupling. For U [greater or approximately equal to] 6 until a value in the range [8,12), we find an insulating phase, without long-range order, which we conjecture to be a spin liquid phase. This spiral order is found at stronger coupling.

Firstly, at a stripe melting phase transition, which may be relevant for the high temperature superconductors, where we propose a specific type of transition which produces critical exponents agreeing with neutron scattering experiments on LSCO. Secondly, for a Pomeranchuk transition where an electronic nematic order parameter develops we present a controlled expansion within which the physics of such a transition, and of the related problem of fermions coupled to a gauge field, can be addressed. Thirdly, in a quantum spin liquid phase that is likely to be realized in certain organic Mott insulators. Here we show how such a phase can be accessed from a low energy description of a metal, without resorting to slave-particle constructions. Methodologically, the work in this thesis relies on field theoretical methods such as the renormalization group, the large-N and related expansions, dualities, bosonization and slave-particle constructions.<br>by David Fabian Mross.<br>Ph.D.

<p>The technique of Nanoindentation <em>in situ</em> Transmission Electron Microscope has been implemented on a Philips CM20. Indentations have been performed on Si and Sapphire (<em>α-Al</em><em>2</em><em>O</em><em>3</em>) cut from wafers; Cr/Sc multilayers and <em>Ti</em><em>3</em><em>SiC</em><em>2</em> thin films. Different sample geometries and preparation methods have been evaluated. Both conventional ion and Focused Ion Beam milling were used, with different ways of protecting the sample during milling. Observations were made of bending and fracture of samples, dislocation nucleation and dislocation movement. Basal slip was observed upon unloading in Sapphire. Dislocation movement constricted along the basal planes were observed in <em>Ti</em><em>3</em><em>SiC</em><em>2</em>. Post indentation electron microscopy revealed kink formation in <em>Ti</em><em>3</em><em>SiC</em><em>2</em> and layer rotation and slip across layers in Cr/Sc multilayer stacks. Limitations of the technique are presented and discussed.</p>

3xxx aluminium alloys are used among others in packaging, architectural applications and heat exchangers. Both dispersoids and constituent phases are very important in this alloy system. The size and distribution of the dispersoids have a strong influence on the deformation, the recovery and recrystallisation behaviour and final mechanical properties of the 3xxx Al alloys. Also the constituent phases influence recrystallisation, grain size, texture and mechanical properties. In this thesis dispersoids and constituent phases in 3xxx Al alloys were studied, using transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques as the main tools for the investigations. The alloys studied here were direct chill-cast 3xxx aluminium alloys with varying material composition. They were studied after various low temperature homogenisations. Constituent phases extracted from the Al matrix were studied with respect to type, lattice parameters, chemical composition and morphology in alloys with various composition. Al6(Fe,Mn) was found to be the most prominent constituent phase in the alloy with a low Si content. Orientation relationships (ORs) of constituent particles with relation to Al matrix were investigated for Al6(Fe,Mn) and α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si constituents. The OR between the Al matrix and the Al6(Fe,Mn) constituent was determined to be [-1-1-2]c // [-11-1]Al , (33-3) c // (0-2-2)Al . This OR is consistent with the OR of Al6(Fe,Mn) dispersoids. α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si constituent particles in the Si rich alloy were found to have various possible orientations. The main focus of this thesis is the study of α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoids. How the precipitation of α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoids influences the hardness and tensile strength in alloys were systematically investigated. The evolution of density, size and volume fraction of the α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoids when varying the annealing time, the temperature and the alloy composition was quantitatively studied by conventional TEM and electrical measurements. A hardening effect from the dispersoids was revealed. The hardening effect increases with increasing Mn and Si contents in the alloys. A high number density of relatively small dispersoids are beneficial for the hardness. For some applications of the 3xxx alloys this hardening during low temperature annealing is of significant importance for the further process. The α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoid phase is a cubic icosahedral quasi crystal approximation phase. Investigations of quasi crystal approximant phases are important for better understanding of quasi crystals. Diffraction studies verified that the most commonly observed OR for the α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoids is [1-11] α // [1-11]Al , (5-2-7)α // (011)Al . This orientation may be explained by the assumption that the Mackay icosahedron internal in the α-phase has a fixed orientation in relation to Al, similar to that of the icosahedral quasi crystals existing in this alloy system. High angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF STEM) tomography and diffraction studies were combined to study the α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoids in the 3xxx Al alloys. Most dispersoids were found to have a plate shaped morphology after low temperature homogenisation at 450 °C for 24 hours. The largest proportion of the dispersoids follows the commonly observed OR with the Al matrix. A methodology was established, which connects information about the morphology, the OR and the habit plane of crystalline particles, not restricted only to the dispersoid phase studied in this thesis.<br>Aluminiumslegeringer Produksjon av aluminium er en energikrevende prosess. Norges store vannkraftressurser gjør produksjon av aluminium i Norge både bærekraftig og lønnsom. Ved å tilsette legeringselementer kan materialegenskapene til aluminium forandres. Dette gir aluminiumslegeringer en rekke bruksområder. Gode egenskaper er høy styrke, lav vekt, god termisk og elektrisk ledningsvevene, høy formbarhet og lav vekt. Lav vekt er fordelaktig i et miljøperspektiv for eksempel i transportsektoren, da drivstofforbruket kan bli redusert. Aluminium er resirkulerbart, og bare 5% av energien som brukes i primær aluminiumsproduksjon trengs for å resirkulere aluminium. Den kjemiske sammensetningen av legeringene endres når materialet resirkuleres, og dette endrer materialegenskapene og mikrostrukturen til materialet. Man må derfor forsøke å forstå disse endringene og forutse hvordan material egenskapene vil endres ved resirkulering. 3xxx aluminium legeringer brukes blant annet til varmevekslere, bygningsprodukter og matinnpakning. I disse legeringene tilsettes jern, mangan og silisium. Konstituente faser blir dannet under størkningen av aluminium, og dispersoidene felles ut under homogenisering. Disse fasene er veldig viktige fordi de påvirker og bestemmer hvordan materialegenskapene endrer seg i legeringene. I denne avhandlingen har dispersoide faser og konstituente faser blitt studert med Transmisjonselektronmikroskop teknikker som hovedverktøy. Hovedfokuset for avhandlingen har vært å studere α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoider. Hvordan disse dispersoidene påvirker hardhet og spenninger i materialet ble systematisk studert. Det ble funnet en hardhetseffekt i legeringene med et høyt Si og Mn innhold, som er viktig for noen anvendelser. En metodologi for å koble tomografi og diffraksjonstudier av α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoider ble også utviklet for å kunne gi et komplett bilde av dispersoidenes morfologi, fasetter og orientering. α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoide fasen er en kubisk ikosaeder kvasi krystallinsk approksimasjon fase. Å undersøke slike kvasikrystallinske approksimasjons faser er viktig for å forså kvasikrystaller. Diffraksjonstudier bekreftet og verifiserte orienteringen av α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si dispersoidene i aluminium. En forklaringsmodell som knyttet kvasikrystallenes orientering og dispersoideorienteringen ble laget.

The thesis consists of four main topics. First, a theoretical description of single molecule spectroscopy is presented in order to study time-dependent fluctuations of single molecule spectra in a dynamic environment. In particular, the photon counting statistics is investigated for a single molecule undergoing a generic type of spectral diffusion process. An exact analytical solution is found for this case, and various physical limits are analyzed. Second, motivated by recent experimental observations of anomalous spectral fluctuations in quantum dot systems, both the lineshape phenomenon and the photon counting statistics are explored when spectral fluctuations are characterized by power-law statistics, for which there is no finite timescale. Unique features of the power-law statistics are demonstrated in spectral properties of those systems. Third, a spectral analysis method is developed for the non-adiabatic electron transfer reactions, which allows a unified treatment of diverse kinetic regimes in the electron transfer process. The method is applied to electron transfer reactions in mixed-valence systems in order to explore the possibility of electronic coherence. Finally, effects of the nonequilibrium bath relaxation on the excitation energy transfer process are investigated by generalizing the Forster-Dexter theory of excitation energy transfer to the case of the nonstationary bath relaxation.<br>by YounJoon Jung.<br>Ph.D.

We investigate the ground-state properties of two strongly-correlated systems: the two-dimensional $t-J$ model that can be used to study the high-temperature superconducting phase in the doped antiferromagnet, and the frustrated N\'eel antiferromagnet described by the $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice, which is widely considered as the prototype model for spin frustration.
In this thesis, we apply to these two systems state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo techniques, including the variational and the Green's function Monte Carlo with the fixed-node approximation. Few Lanczos steps are used to systematically improve the accuracy of the trial wave functions. By introducing a suitable regularization scheme for the variational calculations with few Lanczos steps, stable and controllable simulations can be performed up to very large cluster sizes with very good accuracy.
In the two-dimensional $t{-}J$ model at $J/t=0.4$, we show that the accuracy of the Gutzwiller-projected variational state (containing $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing) can be improved much by few Lanczos steps; in addition, the fixed-node Monte Carlo with these systematically improvable trial wave functions gives results that are comparable with the best accurate DMRG ones. Our main outcome is that the ground state is homogeneous and no evidence of stripes is detected around the doping $\delta=1/8$. Indeed, our best approximation to the ground state does not show any tendency towards charge inhomogeneity. Furthermore, our results show that a uniform state containing superconductivity and antiferromagnetism is stabilized at low hole doping, i.e., $\delta \lesssim 0.1$.
In the $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice, we use the projected mean-field state that is built from Abrikosov fermions having a $Z_2$ gauge structure and four Dirac points in the spinon spectrum. No spin or dimer order is found in the strongly frustrated regime and our calculations imply that a spin liquid phase may faithfully represent the exact ground state around $J_{2}/J_{1}=0.5$. The few Lanczos step technique is used to systematically improve the accuracy of the variational states both for the ground state and for few relevant low-energy excitations. This procedure allows us to estimate, in a valuable and systemic way, the spin gaps within thermodynamical limit and to show a solid evidence of an unconventional gapless excitation spectrum in the strongly frustrated regime, i.e., $J_{2}/J_{1}\simeq 0.5$. In particular, we found gapless triplet excitations at momenta $(\pi,0)$ and $(0,\pi)$, which are compatible with the presence of four Dirac points at momenta $(\pm \frac{\pi}{2},\pm \frac{\pi}{2})$ in the spinon spectrum.

La these de victor ivanov s'articule autour de deux axes de recherches pour lesquels la spectroscopie raman s'est revelee etre un outil bien adapte a l'etude des supraconducteurs a haute temperature critique reba#2cu#3o#7 (re = terre rare). La premiere partie de ce travail presente une etude theorique et experimentale du processus de mise en ordre et de diffusion de l'oxygene dans ces materiaux. M. Ivanov aborde en premier lieu le calcul de la distribution de temperature a travers l'echantillon sous l'effet de l'echauffement laser qui peut influer sur la distribution en oxygene. La microcristallinite des echantillons frittes induit un effet d'echauffement, negligeable dans le cas des films minces. Le comportement de la bande raman de l'oxygene apical dont la frequence varie avec le contenu en oxygene et l'ordre du sous reseau d'oxygene a mis en evidence des microphases dans les cristallites avec des domaines de taille minimum egale a 10 cellules elementaires. Une etude du compose isotopique du materiau sous-dope en oxygene yba#2cu#3#1#8o#6#. #2 a permis de mieux etudier les sites des lacunes en oxygene et l'influence du recuit laser sur l'echange isotopique entre les differents sites de l'oxygene. Dans la deuxieme partie de la these, le profil des bandes raman a haute resolution provenant des vibrations des atomes de baryum et de cuivre a ete etudie en fonction de la temperature entre 10 et 300 k sur des films minces de supraconducteurs yba#2cu#3o#7. Ces profils presentent une asymetrie caracteristique d'une forte interaction electron-phonon. La simple superposition d'une fonction lorentzienne asymetrique (fonction de fano) pour la raie du ba a 115 cm#-#1 et de lorentziennes pour les autres bandes ne peut rendre compte de facon satisfaisante de l'intensite spectrale entre 80 et 200 cm#-#1 et un calcul plus elabore s'impose. En considerant que les vibrations du baryum et du cuivre interagissent avec un continuum commun d'excitations electroniques, le spectre raman calcule est en tres bon accord avec le spectre raman experimental. Ce calcul permet de determiner l'intensite de l'interaction electron-phonon pour les deux phonons impliques (ba et cu) a differentes temperatures. Le continuum electronique est du a des transitions de basse energie puisque des phonons de basse energie sont deformes par l'interaction. Dans le schema de bandes de yba#2cu#3o#7 calcule par la methode k. P, deux bandes sont suffisamment proches entre elles et intersectent le niveau de fermi de facon a permettre des transitions electroniques interbandes en infrarouge lointain. La premiere hypothese pour l'origine du continuum implique des transitions electroniques interbandes de l'oxygene apical o(4)p#x o(4)p#y pres de la ligne sr (k = /a, /b, ) de la zone de brillouin. Dans la seconde hypothese, on remarque que la bande des chaines cuo croise une bande dite impaire du plan conducteur cuo#2 pres du niveau de fermi au point k = (0. 5/a, 0. 2/b, 0). Les transitions entre ces deux bandes ont des energies comprises entre 0 et 200 cm#-#1, donc proches des energies des phonons du sous-reseau metallique. Cette derniere hypothese parait la plus plausible car elle implique une anisotropie du gap supraconducteur, ainsi qu'il est observe experimentalement.

Les objectifs de ce travail sont d'une part d'étudier la structure électronique de carbures de titane bidimensionnels appartenant à la famille des MXènes, et d'autre part de synthétiser des films minces pour caractériser certaines de leurs propriétés. L'étude de la structure électronique a été réalisée sur le système Ti3C2T2 avec une attention particulière portée aux groupements de surface T (T=OH, F ou O) en comparant les résultats obtenus par spectroscopie de perte d'énergie des électrons à ceux des calculs ab initio. Cette étude, portée à la fois sur les excitations du gaz d'électrons de valence et des électrons de coeur, a permis de mettre en évidence la localisation des groupements de surface, ainsi que leur influence sur la structure électronique du MXene. La comparaison des simulations et des spectres expérimentaux a également permis de caractériser la nature chimique des groupements de surface. Enfin, la limite d'une telle étude est discutée en considérant les phénomènes d'irradiation responsables de la perte d'atomes d'hydrogène. La synthèse d'échantillons modèles nécessite la synthèse préalable d'un film mince de phase MAX précurseur pour le MXene : nous avons choisi la phase Ti2AlC, précurseur de Ti2C. La synthèse de Ti2AlC a été réalisée par recuit ex-situ de systèmes multicouches déposés à température ambiante. Les films ont été caractérisés par diffraction des rayons X et microscopie électronique en transmission. Au-delà de l'obtention d'un film mince de Ti2AlC texturé, cette étude a permis de montrer que la phase recherchée était obtenue via des mécanismes d'interdiffusions induisant la formation d'une solution solide métastable vers 400°C qui se transforme en phase MAX vers 600°C. Enfin, l'application de ce procédé à la phase V2AlC a permis de montrer l'importance de l'orientation de la phase initiale pour l'obtention d'un film mince texturé<br>The aim of this work is at first to study the electronic structure of bidimensional titanium carbide systems, belonging to the MXene family and also to synthesize thin films of such new materials to characterize their properties. The study of the electronic structure has been performed for the Ti3C2T2 MXene with a special attention to the T surface groups by using a combination of electron energy loss spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This study, focused on both valence and core electrons excitations, enabled the identification of the surface group localization, their influence on the MXene electronic structure as well as their chemical nature. The limits of our TEM-based study is also discussed in view of irradiation phenomena which induce the loss of hydrogen atoms. The synthesis of a MXene thin film requires, beforehand, that of a MAX phase thin film: we opted for Ti2AlC, the precursor for the Ti2C MXene. The MAX phase thin film synthesis was carried out by ex-situ annealing of a multilayer layers. X-ray diffraction experiments and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy observations show that a highly textured Ti2AlC thin film is obtained above 600°C after the formation, at 400°C, of a metastable solid solution. Finally, by using the same process for V2AlC, we demonstrate that the initial phase orientation plays a key role for the texture of the thin film so obtained

De nombreux alliages de structure doivent leurs propriétés mécaniques à la présence de précipités inter ou intragranulaires. Ainsi les superalliages à base nickel, de matrice austénique γ, sont souvent renforcés par des précipités de phases intermétalliques ordonnées. Au sein de l’alliage Inconel 718, outre la phase γ’ de structure L12 (cubique simple), on trouve des précipités de Ni3Nb sous la forme métastable γ" (D022 - tétragonal centré) ou sous la forme stable δ (D0a - orthorhombique). Le rôle des précipités γ’, γ" et δ sur les propriétés macroscopiques de l'alliage est connu et largement utilisé en contexte industriel. Cependant les mécanismes de précipitation et de transformation de ces précipités ne sont toujours pas complètement élucidés, ce qui a motivé ce travail. La microstructure de l’alliage a été caractérisée par microscopie optique (MO) et électronique (à balayage et en transmission ; MEB et MET) dans l’état de livraison et après des traitements thermiques isothermes et anisothermes. Les essais d’analyse thermique différentielle (ATD) nous ont permis de préciser les domaines de température de précipitation et de dissolution des différentes phases présentes (γ’, γ" et δ). Différents états de précipitation ont été obtenus à l’aide de traitements thermiques isothermes basés sur les diagrammes temps-températuretransformation (T.T.T.) disponibles dans la littérature. Les observations en MET « à haute résolution » des précipités des phases δ et γ’’ ont permis de caractériser certains des défauts structuraux présents dans ces précipités. Nous montrons ainsi que les défauts d’empilement au sein de la phase γ’’ peuvent servir de germes pour la précipitation de . Alors que la structure des interfaces δ/γ ainsi que les défauts d’orientation au sein des lamelles de δ suggèrent que la croissance de la phase δ a lieu directement à partir de la matrice<br>Many structural alloys are strengthened by the presence of precipitates in the grains or at grain boundaries. Nickel based superalloys often present an austenitic γ matrix in which ordered intermetallic phases precipitate. In the alloy Inconel 718, one can find γ’ L12 cubic ordered precipitates together with the compound Ni3Nb in its metastable form γ" (D022 - tetragonal) or the stable phase δ (D0a - orthorhombic). The incidence of those precipitates on macroscopic properties of the alloy 718 is well known and widely used in industrial applications. However the mechanisms responsible for the precipitation and transformation of these phases are not fully understood, which motivated the present study. The alloy microstructure has been observed by optical microscopy (OM) and electron microscopy (scanning and transmission, SEM and TEM) in the as received state as well as after heat treatment (isothermal and anisothermal). Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was used to determine the precipitation and dissolution temperatures of the phases γ', γ" and δ. Various precipitation microstructures were obtained by heat treatments based on available TTT diagrams. Some of the structural defects present in γ" and δ precipitates have been characterised by lattice imaging TEM observations. It is shown that stacking faults in γ’’ phase can act as a seed for the germination of . The structure of the δ/γ interface and the orientation defects in δ lamellae suggest that the growth of δ phase occurs directly from the matrix (and not by transformation of the γ’’ phase)

L'application d'une perturbation externe à certains matériaux (tels que la température, la pression ou la lumière) provoque souvent l'émergence de nouvelles propriétés macroscopiques dont l'origine se situe au niveau atomique. Par conséquent, une étude détaillée de la dynamique atomique devient essentielle pour la compréhension de processus tels que les transformations chimiques ou les transitions de phase. Dans le cas particulier des transitions de phase structurales, la symétrie du cristal est soumise à une transformation entre deux états différents à une valeur critique. Les échelles de temps typiques de la dynamique structurale sont de l'ordre de quelques centaines de femtosecondes à plusieurs picosecondes. Le développement des impulsions laser femtosecondes a permis aux chercheurs d'accéder aux échelles de temps nécessaires pour explorer la dynamique structurale ultra-rapide. Plus précisément, la diffraction résolue en temps s'est révélée être une technique idéale pour suivre et dévoiler les voies hors équilibre suivies par le réseau après une courte impulsion laser. Cette thèse présente des études expérimentales réalisées par des techniques de diffraction d'électrons et de rayons X résolue en temps sur deux transitions de phase structurelles différentes. Dans une première partie, nous démontrons les capacités du montage expérimental de diffraction d'électrons ultra-rapide (UED) développé au Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquée. Nos résultats expérimentaux réalisés sur des échantillons monocristallins de haute qualité sont présentés ainsi qu'une étude quantitative des implications des effets de diffraction dynamique dans les expériences UED. Dans une deuxième partie, nous présentons un ensemble d'expériences de diffraction d'électrons pompe-sonde réalisée sur GdTe₃, un composé appartenant à la famille des Tritellurides de terres rares qui présente un état d'onde de densité de charge. L'arrivée d'une excitation optique déclenche la transition de phase de manière non thermique. La dynamique de relaxation est caractérisée par un ralentissement qui augmente avec la fluence incidente ainsi qu'avec la température initiale de l'échantillon. Ces résultats éclairent les interprétations controversées actuelles concernant l’ émergence de défauts topologiques photo-induits.Dans une troisième partie, nous présentons des expériences de diffraction des rayons X en temps résolu réalisées à la ligne CRISTAL du synchrotron SOLEIL. Dans ce cas, nous avons étudié le composé A15 Nb₃Sn, qui présente une transition de phase d'une symétrie cubique à une symétrie tétragonale à l'équilibre thermique. Les résultats de notre expérience pompe-sonde mettent en évidence une réponse différente du réseau par rapport à la transition d’ équilibre thermique, ce qui encourage les futures recherches sur la dynamique structural de ce matériau<br>The application of an external perturbation in certain materials (such as temperature, pressure or light) often gives rise to the emergence of new macroscopic properties with their origin at the atomic level. Therefore, a detailed study of the atomic dynamics becomes essential to the understanding of processes such as chemical transformations or phase transitions. In the particular case of structural phase transitions, the symmetry of the crystal undergoes a transformation between two different states at a given critical value. The typical time scales of the structural dynamics occur on the order of few hundreds of femtoseconds to several picoseconds. The development of femtosecond laser pulses has enabled scientists to access the required time scales to explore the ultrafast dynamics of the lattice structure in the relevant time scales. More precisely, time-resolved diffraction has proven to be an ideal technique to track and unveil the out-of-equilibrium pathways followed by the lattice after a short laser pulse.This thesis presents experimental studies performed by time-resolved electron and X-ray diffraction techniques on two different structural phase transitions. In a first part, we demonstrate the capabilities of the ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experimental setup developed at Laboratoire d’Optique Apliquée. Our UED experimental results performed on high quality single crystal samples are presented along with a quantitative study of the implications of dynamical diffraction effects in UED experiments. In a second part, we present a set of pump-probe electron diffraction experiments performed on GdTe₃, a compound belonging to the rare-earth Tritellurides family which presents a charge density wave state. The arrival of an optical excitation triggers the phase transition non-thermally with the out-of-equilibrium relaxation dynamics of the charge density wave state characterized by slowing down that increases with incident fluence as well as with initial sample temperature. These results shed more light on current controversial interpretations involving the emergence of photoinduced topological defects. In a third part, we present time resolved X-ray diffraction experiments performed at CRISTAL beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron. In this case we have studied the A15 compound Nb₃Sn, which displays a displacive phase transition evolving from cubic to tetragonal symmetry at thermal equilibrium. Our pump-probe results present evidence of a different lattice response with respect to the thermal equilibrium transition, encouragingf uture investigations on the dynamics of this material

A partir de l’observation de l’Univers, il a été démontré que la masse associée à la matière visible ne représente que quelques pourcents de son budget énergétique total. La partie restante est composée de l’énergie noire, responsable de l’expansion cosmologique, et d’une matière invisible, la matière noire. La famille de particules la plus probable pour décrire cette matière noire est appelée WIMP. Ces particules peuvent être directement détectées par la mesure du recul nucléaire induit lors d’une diffusion élastique au sein d’un matériau scintillant. Pour cela, la Collaboration XENON a développé un détecteur placé sous terre, consistant en une chambre à projection temporelle (TPC) et utilisant du xénon sous deux phases: liquide et gazeuse. La différence de taux d’ionisation des atomes rencontrés pour un recul nucléaire induit par un WIMP, par rapport à un recul électronique induit par des sources de bruit de fond b ou g, conduit à des rapports différents entre les signaux émis en phase liquide et gazeuse. Cette différence est utilisée pour isoler les WIMPs du bruit de fond. Une bonne connaissance du signal d’ionisation est donc requise pour un tel détecteur. Dans ce contexte, la réponse du détecteur XENON100 aux signaux de charge d’électrons uniques est étudiée. Ils correspondent à des faibles signaux émis en phase gazeuse par un ou plusieurs électrons extraits en coïncidence temporelle. Grâce à cette analyse, une méthode innovante pour calculer le rendement d’extraction des électrons du liquide vers le gaz a été établie<br>From the observation of the Universe, it has been demonstrated that the mass associated to visible matter represents only few percent of its energetic budget, while the remaining part is composed by dark energy, responsible to the cosmological expansion, and by some hidden matter, the dark matter. The likeliest particles family used to describe this dark matter is called WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles). That kind of particles could be directly detected by measuring nuclear recoil during an elastic scattering inside a scintillating material. For this, the XENON Collaboration has developed a detector consisting in a time projection chamber (TPC) using xenon dual phase (liquid and gas) detector, and placed underground. The different ionization density of nuclear recoils induced by WIMPs, and electronic recoils induced by β particles or g rays background source, leads to different ratio between both signals, in the liquid and in the gas phase, and is used to discriminate WIMPs from background. A good knowledge of the ionization signal is strongly required for such a detector. In this context, the XENON100 response to single electron charge signals is investigated. They correspond to very tiny signals emitted in the gas phase by one or few electrons extracted in time coincidence. Thanks to this analysis, an innovative method to establish the extraction yield of electrons from the liquid to the gas phase has been drawn, allowing to explore a key information to reject electronic recoils from nuclear ones

Cette thèse porte sur la synthèse et la caractérisation de nouvelles phases bidimensionnelles par microscopie électronique in-situ, notamment la silice (SiO2), des cages nanométriques de carbone similaire à des molécules C20 et le chalcocite (β-Cu2S). Ces études ont permis de mettre en évidence les conditions préalables de croissance afin que celle-ci soit reproductible. La caractérisation de ces structures a été réalisée par imagerie haute résolution (HRTEM) ainsi que par spectroscopie de perte d’énergie (EELS). La première partie de la thèse est consacrée à l’étude de la nucléation et la croissance in-situ d’une phase cristalline 2D ordonnée et désordonnée sur différents métaux de transition (Co, Ru, Fe) ainsi qu’une phase 1D qui croît le long des marches atomiques sur la surface métallique. La seconde partie est consacrée à la croissance in-situ de cages de carbone d’un diamètre de l’ordre de 0.36 nm en présence d’un catalyseur métallique, tel que Co, Fe et Ru. La dernière partie est consacrée à l’étude de la croissance de la plus fine structure cristalline du β-Cu2S sur la surface du graphène. Toutes ces études ont été appuyées par des simulations d’images de microscopie<br>The aim of this thesis is the synthesis and characterization of new two-dimensional phases in an in-situ transmission electron microscopy experiment. These studies concerned the nucleation and growth of three deferent materials: quasi-two-dimensional silica (SiO2), the smallest possible carbon cages with the size of C20, and two-dimensional chalcocite (β-Cu2S). The characterization of these structures has been performed using high resolution imaging (HRTEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The first part of this thesis is devoted to the study of the nucleation and growth of an ordered or disordered 2D crystalline phase of silica on different substrates (Co, Ru, Fe) and a 1D silica phase grown at atomic steps of a metal surface. The second part illustrates the in-situ growth of the smallest possible carbon cages with a diameter of about 0.36 nm on catalytically active metal surfaces such as Co, Fe, or Ru. The last part is devoted to the growth of the thinnest stable layer of β-Cu2S on a graphene surface. All these studies were accompanied by image simulations

Les phases MAX sont des carbures et nitrures ternaires dont les propriétés sont intermédiaires entre celles de métaux et de céramiques. Ce travail de thèse a pour objectif de mesurer leur constante diélectrique complexe en fonction de la composition et de l'orientation cristallographique. Les échantillons utilisés sont des monocristaux élaborés en couches minces et des polycristaux massifs. Les mesures ont été effectuées par spectroscopie de perte d'énergie des électrons (EELS) et par l'ellipsométrie V-UV. Les propriétés diélectriques très différentes en fonction de l'orientation du cristal ont été mises en évidence et ont donc confirmé l'anisotropie suggérée par la théorie. L'étude d'autres composés en couches minces tel que Ti2GeC, Ti2SnC dont la synthèse a été réalisée nous a permis d'étudier l'influence des éléments A sur les propriétés diélectriques et optiques de ces matériaux. Un modèle phénoménologique semi-classique de Drude-Lorentz a été utilisé pour reproduire la fonction Ɛ. Après ajustement de ce modèle aux mesures expérimentales, il a été possible d'extraire la densité electronique et d'estimer un temps de relaxation des électrons libres. Les résultats sont en bon accord avec les valeurs publiées et nous permettent de confirmer que la conductivité statique présente une forte anisotropie dans Ti2A1C et Ti2A1N. Enfin, une approche ab initio a été mise en œuvre afin de modéliser les constantes diélectriques complexes. Ces calculs basés sur la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité dépendant du temps (TDDFT) reproduisent l'anisotropie de la réponse diélectrique et montrent qu'elle est intimement liée aux champs locaux<br>The MAX phases are ternary carbides and nitrides which exhibit remarkable properties half way between metals end ceramics. In this work, we have measured the complex dielectric constant Ɛ(ω) as a function of the composition of the sample. The samples are thin films of single crystal grown by magnetron sputtering and bulk polycristals processed by hot isostatic pressure. The measurements have been performed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the infrated - soft x-ray range and by V-UV ellipsometry in the infrated-ultraviolet range (1. 6 to 5. 5 eV). The dielctric properties of the Ti2A1C and Ti2A1N samples are remarkably different with the crystallographic orientation. In particular, a shift of the energy position of the plasmon of Ti1A1C with respect to the orientation of the crystal is observed. The dielectric constants of thin films of Ti2GeC, Ti2SnC and V2GeC have also been determined. A empirical semi-classical Drude-Lorentz model is fitted to the experimental spectra enabled us to extract the microscopic parameters such as the relaxation times and the electron density and the lifetime of free electrons. In addition, we show that the DC conductivity is indeed anisotropic in these compounds, a fact which has not been possible to address so far on macroscopic measurements. The dielectric function has been modelled in the framework of the time dependant density functional theory. Our calculations showed that the various dielctric functions in Ti2A1C are clearly influenced by strong local effect created by the presence of the d band in this material

The sun provides us with a surplus of energy convertible to electricity using solar cells. This thesis focuses on solar cells based on chalcopyrite (CIGSe) as well as kesterite (CZTS(e)) absorber layers. These materials yield record efficiencies of 20.4 % and 11.1 %, respectively. Especially for CZTS(e), the absorber layers often do not consist of one single desired phase but can exhibit areas with deviating material properties, referred to as secondary phases. Furthermore, several material layers are required for a working solar cell, each exhibiting interfaces. Even though secondary phases and interfaces represent a very small fraction of the solar cell they can have a profound influence on the over-all electrical solar cell characteristics. As such, it is crucial to understand how secondary phases and interfaces influence the local electrical characteristics. Characterising secondary phases and interfaces is challenging due to their small sample volume and relatively small differences in composition amongst others. This is where electronmicroscopy, especially transmission electron microscopy, offers valuable insight to material properties on the microscopic scale. The main challenge is, however, to link these material properties to the corresponding electrical characteristics of a solar cell. This thesis uses electron beam induced current imaging and introduces a new method for JV characterisation of solar cells on the micron scale. Combining microscopic structural and electrical characterisation techniques allowed identifying and characterising local defects found in the absorber layer of CIGS solar cells after thermal treatment. Furthermore, CZTSe solar cells in this thesis exhibited a low photo-current density which is traced to the formation of a current blocking ZnSe secondary phase at the front contact interface. The electron microscopy work has contributed to an understanding of the chemical stability of CZTS and has shown the need for an optimised back contact interface in order to avoid chemical decomposition reactions and formation of detrimental secondary phases. With this additional knowledge, a comprehensive picture of the material properties from the macroscopic down to the microscopic level can be attained throughout all required material layers.

Ce travail de thèse a été dédié à l’élaboration et l’étude de nouveaux matériaux hybrides obtenus par la fonctionnalisation de molécule-aimants (en anglais single-molecule magnets, SMMs) et de complexes à transfert d’électron. Le premier chapitre fait un état de l’art des deux classes de composés magnétiques utilisées dans ce travail : les molécule-aimants et les systèmes à transfert d’électrons. Une brève description des systèmes magnétiques hybrides présents dans la littérature est ensuite présentée dans le but d’illustrer les motivations qui ont conduit à ce travail. Le chapitre II décrit la fonctionnalisation des molécule-aimants de type [Mn12] dans le but d’obtenir des systèmes cristaux liquides hybrides. Deux approches ont été étudiées : (a) la fonctionnalisation des ligands périphériques avec des groupements fortement lipophiles (longues chaines alkyle) ou (b) le greffage de promoteurs mésogènes par l’intermédiaire d’espaceurs aliphatiques flexibles. Les chapitres III à V présentent les études sur des carrés moléculaires à ponts cyanure {Fe2Co2} qui montrent un transfert d’électron thermo- et photo-induit. Le chapitre III discute de la possibilité de moduler le processus de transfert d’électron de ces carrés moléculaires via le changement du contre anion. La fonctionnalisation du carré moléculaire {Fe2Co2} avec de chaines aliphatiques et son impact induit sur les propriétés physiques à l’état solide et en solutions sont décrits dans le chapitre IV. Le chapitre V discute de l’effet de la fonctionnalisation avec des groupements fortement électrodonneurs, tels que les groupements méthoxy, sur le processus de transfert d’électron des carrés moléculaires {Fe2Co2}<br>The work presented in this thesis was focused on the design and investigation of novel hybrid materials via ligand functionalization of the single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and electron transfer complexes. Chapter I contains general information about these two classes of the magnetic systems. In order to illustrate the motivation behind our work, a brief review on previously reported soft hybrid magnetic systems, is presented. Chapter II is dedicated to the functionalization of [Mn12]-based SMMs towards hybrid liquid crystalline systems via two different approaches: (a) the functionalization of peripheral ligands with strongly lipophilic groups (long alkyl chains), or (b) the grafting of mesogenic promoters through flexible aliphatic spacers. Chapters III – V are focused on cyanido-bridged molecular {Fe2Co2} squares that exhibit thermally or photo-induced electron transfer. Thus, in Chapter III, the possibility to modulate the electron transfer properties in {Fe2Co2} molecular squares via the use of different counter-anion is discussed. The functionalization with long aliphatic chains and its influence over the properties of {Fe2Co2} molecular squares in solid state and solutions are discussed in Chapter IV. Finally, the effect of the ligand functionalization with strongly electron density donating groups (methoxy) over the electron transfer properties of {Fe2Co2} molecular squares is investigated in Chapter V

L’objectif de ce travail est de caractériser par microscopie électronique en transmission (MET) la structure cristalline des films minces de BiFeO3 (BFO) épitaxiés sur LaAlO3 (LAO) (001) et Ca0,96Ce0,04MnO3//YAlO3 (CCMO//YAO) (001) à l’échelle de nm. En effet, BFO à l’état massif cristallise dans la structure rhomboédrique R3c à température ambiante avec une polarisation ferroélectrique de ≈ 90 μC/cm2 suivant [111]pc. En film mince, des études précédentes ont montré que BFO peut adopter une structure pseudo-quadratique (type-T) avec un rapport c/a ≈ 1,27 et une structure pseudo-rhomboédrique (type-R) avec un rapport c/a ≈ 1,07. Ce changement de phase améliore la polarisation ferroélectrique et change l’ordre antiferromagnétique. Nous avons étudié des films minces de BFO de différentes épaisseurs déposés sur (001) LAO. Pour le film de 7 nm, aucun joint de grain n’a été observé. Le diagramme de diffraction présente seulement les réflexions fondamentales de la maille pseudo-cubique. Dans les films plus épais, deux types de grains sont présents de type-T avec un rapport c/a ≈ 1,24 et de type-R avec un rapport c/a ≈ 1,05. La phase type-R est présente sous la forme d’un grain incliné entouré par une matrice de phase de type-T. Les deux phases de type-T de type-R ont été identifiées respectivement comme une structure monoclinique Cm et une structure rhomboédrique R3c légèrement distordue. Pour les films minces de BFO (94 nm) déposés sur CCMO//YAO (001), deux phases de type-T et de type-R sont également présentes. La phase de type-R est identifiée ici comme la phase rhomboédrique R3c légèrement distordue avec un rapport c/a ≈ 1,09. La phase de type-T est identifiée comme la phase quadratique P4mm légèrement distordue avec un rapport c/a ≈ 1,27. Nos résultats tendent à montrer que l’augmentation de la contrainte de compression favorise la stabilisation de la phase quadratique P4mm<br>The aim of this work is to characterize by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at the scale of nm the crystal structure of thin films of BiFeO3 (BFO) grown on (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) and (001) Ca0,96Ce0,04MnO3//YAlO3 (CCMO//YAO). Indeed, BFO in the bulk state crystallizes in the R3c rhombohedral structure at room temperature with a ferroelectric polarization of ≈ 90 μC/cm2 in the [111]pc direction. In thicker films, two types of grains are present T-like with a c/a ratio ≈ 1.24 and R-like with a c/a ratio ≈ 1.05. The R-like phase is generally present in the form of slanted R-like grains surrounded by a T-like matrix. The T-like and R-like phases were identified as a monoclinic Cm structure and rhombohedral R3c structure slightly distorted, respectively. For thin films of BFO (94 nm) deposited on CCMO//YAO (001), T-like and R-like phases are also present. The R-like phase is identified here as the rhombohedral R3c structure slightly distorted with a c/a ratio ≈ 1.09. The T-like phase is identified here as the tetragonal P4mm phase slightly distorted with a c/a ratio ≈ 1.27. Our results suggest that the increase of the compressive stress promotes the stabilization of the tetragonal phase P4mm

Dans cette thèse, des formations des germaniures de manganèse et des disiliciures de cobalt en couche minces ont été étudié comme la structure et chimie. Dans le système Mn-Ge, deux nouvelles relations entre des grains du Mn5Ge3 et (111)Ge ont été identifiées. De plus, il a été montré que la pureté du Mn5Ge3 dans les couches déposées par pulvérisation cathodique magnétron dépend du mécanisme de croissance. Une diffusion réactive donne du Mn5Ge3 presque pure tandis qu’une réaction non-diffusive donne du Mn5Ge3 qui contient la plupart des impuretés de la pulvérisation cathodique magnétron. Dans CoSi2 qui a été formé d’une configuration Co/Ti/Si, une ségrégation du Ti a été détectée dans les joints de grains du CoSi2. En outre, la distribution du Ti ségrégé a été caractérisée d’être inhomogènes. Pour étudier la ségrégation dans les joints de grains systématiquement, une méthode a été développé qui permet de corréler des investigations structurelle et chimie à l’échelle atomique sur un et le même échantillon dans les joints de grains sélectionnes. Finalement, une méthode a été proposée pour quantifier une ségrégation dans les points triple<br>Germanide and silicide thin films have application in different field such as thermoelectricity, magnetism and/or microelectronics. This PhD thesis study the formation, structure and chemistry of Mn5Ge3 thin films, which is interesting due to its ferromagnetic property for possible spintronic devices, and of CoSi2 thin films, which are used as contact materials. Two new epitaxial relationships between Mn5Ge3 grains and (111)Ge have been identified. The chemical purity of Mn5Ge3 has been related to the deposition by magnetron sputtering: Mn5Ge3 thin films grown by reactive-diffusion are relatively pure while the significant incorporation of impurities in Mn5Ge3 grown by non-diffusive reaction is beneficial for the ferromagnetic property. Ti segregation to CoSi2 grain boundaries has been quantified in CoSi2 grown from a Co/Ti/Si thin film. Additionally, an inhomogeneous distribution of Ti at CoSi2 grain boundary has been related to the defect density. A method has been developed for correlative structural and chemical investigations at the atomic scale on selected interfaces. Finally, a method to quantify the triple junction segregation has been proposed

Afin de mieux comprendre les évolutions structurales mises en évidence dans les oxydes lamellaires de formule générale Li1+x(Ni0.425Mn0.425Co0.15)O2 utilisés comme électrode positive pour batterie lithium-ion, la structure du composé Li2MnO3 a été étudiée en détail. Obtenu selon différentes voies de synthèses, réalisées à différentes températures, ce matériau qui peut être considéré comme un matériau model à fait l’objet d’une étude cristallographique où l’utilisation de la microscopie électronique a été privilégiée. Deux types de défauts ont été identifiés. D’une part, l’existence de fautes d’empilement au sein du matériau a été démontrée. Leurs conséquences sur les clichés de diffraction électronique et les diagrammes de diffraction des rayons-X ont étés expliquées permettant d’unifier les controverses présentent à ce sujet dans la littérature. D’autre part, l’étude de la stabilité thermique du composé Li2MnO3 a mis en évidence l’apparition de défauts de type « phase spinelle » en surface des grains lorsque la température de traitement thermique devient supérieure ou égale à 900°C. Le traitement du matériau par la voie acide a pu être étudié et le mécanisme de désintercalation chimique du lithium par la voie acide a finalement pu être précisé. Il est montré que ce mécanisme est le même quelle que soit la taille des particules<br>In order to get a better understanding of the complex structural evolutions occurring in the layered oxides like Li1+x(Ni0.425Mn0.425Co0.15)O2 materials when they are used as positive electrodes in lithium batteries, the structure of Li2MnO3 has been studied in detail. Obtained from several synthesis ways, annealed at various temperatures, this compound that can be considered as a model one regarding these complex materials has been the object of a crystallographic study where the use of electron microscopy was privileged. Two kinds of defects could be identified. From one part, the existence of stacking faults in the Li2MnO3 material has been proved and they have been visualized for the first time. Their consequences on X ray and electron diffraction patterns are explained allowing the unification of discrepancies existing in the bibliography. For other part, the study of the thermal stability of Li2MnO3 evidenced the appearance of spinel type defects when the annealing treatment is performed above 900°C. Finally the delithiation by acid leaching is studied and the lithium extraction mechanism is clarified. It is shown that this mechanism is the same whatever the particle size is

La formation de la phase métastable A1 dans les alliages Fe-Nd solidifiés de différentes façons est étudiée. Sa composition chimique estimée grâce à la microsonde électronique est très riche en fer (65 à 70% at. Fer). Son domaine d'existence, sa fraction volumique ainsi que sa cinétique de transformation en Nd2Fe1#7, sont fortement liés à la vitesse de solidification et à la composition de l'alliage. La substitution de l'Al au Fe dans la phase Nd5Fe1#7 se fait d'une manière indirecte à travers la réaction péritectoïde de la phase Nd2Fe1#7 (avec l'aluminium en substitution au fer). La phase nommée a#2 (Nd5Fe1#7 avec Al en substitution) est totalement différente de la phase (phase stable dans le ternaire Fe-Nd-Al). L'influence de la substitution de l'Al dans les phases A1 et Nd2Fe1#7 est également étudiée. Dans l'alliage ternaire Fe-Nd-Dy, la phase A1 est complètement supprimée. La phase Nd5Fe1#7 accepte du dysprosium en substitution au Nd mais en faible quantité, car au-delà d'un certain taux de Dy dans la phase, elle est déstabilisée au bénéfice de la phase de laves pseudo-binaire Fe2 (Nd, Gy) parfaitement stable

Les matériaux quantiques ont récemment introduit en physique de la matière condensée pour unifier tous les matériaux dans lesquels les fortes corrélations électroniques gouvernent les propriétés physiques du système (e.g. les isolants de Mott) et les matériaux dont les propriétés électroniques sont déterminées par la géométrie de la fonction d’onde (e.g. matériaux de Dirac). Ces matériaux montrent des propriétés émergentes résultantes de l’intrication de différents degrés de libertés : la charge, le spin et le moment orbital, donnant lieu aux propriétés topologiques des électrons. L’étude de ces interactions et des compétitions entre les degrés de liberté pertinents nécessite l’utilisation de techniques pompe-sonde ultra-rapides. Particulièrement, les pulses laser femtosecondes interagissent uniquement avec les électrons pour les placer dans un état hors-équilibre décrit par des distributions de type non Fermi-Dirac. La dynamique subséquente implique de nombreux processus, avec un temps de relaxation relié aux constantes de couplage. De plus, dans les techniques résolues en temps, la lumière peut agir comme un paramètre externe, différent des paramètres thermodynamiques, pour explorer le diagramme de phase. Cela nous donne l’opportunité de stabiliser de nouveaux états inaccessibles par des chemins thermiques quasi-adiabatiques ou de manipuler les propriétés physiques des systèmes.Dans cette thèse, nous avons réalisé différentes expériences dans le but d’étudier les propriétés à l’équilibre et hors équilibre de deux matériaux corrélés: BaCo₁₋ₓNiₓS₂ et (V₁₋ₓMₓ)₂O₃.La première partie de ce projet a été dédiée principalement à l’étude de BaNiS₂, le précurseur métallique de la transition de Mott dans BaCo₁₋ₓNiₓS₂ . En utilisant l’ARPES, nous avons étudié la structure de bandes électroniques de BaNiS₂ dans toute la zone de Brillouin. L’expérience, combinée avec des calculs théoriques, révèle un nouveau type de cône de Dirac bidimensionel à caractère orbitalaire d et induit par les corrélations. Le croisement des bandes est protégé par les symétries particulières de la structure cristalline. Nous avons aussi mesuré la structure de bandes de l’isolant de Mott BaCoS₂ dans ses phases magnétique et non magnétiques.Dans la seconde partie, nous avons étudié la dynamique électronique hors équilibre de BaNiS₂ et (V₁₋ₓMx)₂O₃. Grâce à des mesures tr-ARPES et tr-Réflectivité, nous avons observé une renormalisation non thermique et ultra-rapide du cône de Dirac dans BaNiS₂. Ce phénomène est purement provoqué par les excitations électroniques et est stabilisé par l’intéraction entre les électrons et les phonons. De plus, en utilisant différentes techniques pompe-sonde (tr-XRD basé sur XFEL et tr-Réflectivité) nous avons aussi exploré des phases hors-équilibre du matériau prototype de Mott-Hubbard (V₁₋ₓMx)₂O₃ appartenant à différentes parties de son diagramme de phase. Nos résultats montrent une phase transitoire non thermique se développant immédiatement après la photoexcitation ultra-rapide et durant quelques picosecondes dans les phases métallique et isolantes. Cette phase transitoire est accompagné par une distorsion structural qui correspond à un durcissement du réseau et est marqué par un “blue shift” du mode phononique A₁g. Nos résultats soulignent l’importance du remplissage des orbitales aussi bien que des effets important des forts couplages électron-réseau sélectifs dans les matériaux fortement corrélés<br>Quantum materials is a new term in condensed matter physics that unifies all materials in which strong electronic correlation governs physical properties of the system (e.g. Mott insulators) and materials whose electronic properties are determined by the geometry of the electronic wave function (e.g. Dirac materials). These materials show emergent properties– that is, properties that only appear by intricate interactions among many degrees of freedom, such as charge, spin and orbital, giving rise to topological properties of electrons. The study of these interactions and competitions between the relevant degrees of freedom demands applying ultrafast pump-probe techniques. Particularly, femtosecond laser pulses act only on the electrons and set them to an out-of-equilibrium state inexplicable by the Fermi-Dirac distribution. The ensuing dynamics involves various processes and the rate at which the relaxation occurs is related to the coupling constants. Moreover, in time-resolved pump-probe techniques light can act as an additional external parameter to change of the phase diagram – different from thermodynamic parameters. It gives us the opportunity of stabilizing new states inaccessible by quasi-adiabatic thermal pathways or eventually manipulating the physical properties of the systems.In this thesis, we performed different experiments in order to study the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of two correlated compounds: BaCo₁₋ₓNiₓS₂ and (V₁₋ₓMₓ)₂O₃.The first part of the project was mainly devoted to the study of BaNiS₂ that is the metallic precursor of the Mott transition in BaCo₁₋ₓNiₓS₂. By applying ARPES, we studied the electronic band structure of BaNiS₂ in its entire Brillouin zone. These results combined with some theoretical calculations give evidence of a novel correlation-induced and two-dimensional Dirac cone with d-orbital character. The band crossing is protected by the specific symmetries of the crystal structure. We also investigated the electronic band structure of the Mott insulator BaCoS₂ in its magnetic and nonmagnetic phases.In the second part, we studied the out-of-equilibrium electron dynamics of BaNiS₂ and (V₁₋ₓMx)₂O₃. By means of tr-ARPES and tr-reflectivity measurements, we observed an ultrafast and non-thermal renormalization of the Dirac cone in BaNiS₂ . This phenomenon is purely provoked by the electronic excitation and is stabilized by the interplay between the electrons and phonons. Moreover, by applying various pump-probe techniques (XFEL-based tr-XRD and tr-Reflectivity) we also explored the out-of-equilibrium phases of the prototype Mott-Hubbard material (V₁₋ₓMx)₂O₃ in different parts of its phase diagram. Our results show a transient non-thermal phase developing immediately after ultrafast photoexcitation and lasting few picoseconds in both metallic and insulating phases. This transient phase is followed by a structural distortion that corresponds to a lattice hardening and is marked by a “blue shift” of the A₁g phonon mode. These results underline the importance of the orbital filling as well as the strong effect of the selective electron-lattice coupling in the strongly correlated materials

Study of the metastable phases obtained by non-equilibrium processing techniques has come a long way during the past five decades. New metastable phases have often given new perspectives to the research on synthesis of novel materials systems. Metastable materials produced by two non-equilibrium processing methods were studied for this dissertation- 304-type austenitic stainless steel (SS304 or Fe-18Cr-8Ni)+aluminum coatings produced by plasma enhanced magnetron sputter-deposition (PEMS) and nanocrystalline Ti, Zr and Hf powders processed by mechanical milling (MM). The objective of the study was to understand the crystallographic and microstructural aspects of these materials. Four SS304+Al coatings with a nominal Al percentages of 0, 4, 7 and 10 wt.% in the coatings were deposited on an SS304 substrate by PEMS using SS304 and Al targets. The as-deposited coatings were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and three-dimensional atom probe microscopy (3DAP). Surface morphology and chemical analysis were studied by SEM. Phase identification was carried out by XRD and TEM. The microstructural features of all the coatings, as observed in the TEM, consisted of columnar grains with the columnar grain width (a measure of grain size) increasing with an increase in the Al content. The coatings had grains with average grain sizes of about 100, 290, 320 and 980 nm, respectively for 0, 4, 7 and 10 wt.% Al. The observed grain structures and increase in grain size were related to substrate temperature during deposition. XRD results indicated that the Al-free coating consisted of the non-equilibrium ferrite and sigma phases. In the 4Al, 7Al and 10Al coatings, equilibrium ferrite and B2 phases were observed but no sigma phase was found. In 10Al coating, we were able to demonstrate experimentally using 3DAP studies that NiAl phase formation is preferred over the FeAl phase at nano scale. During mechanical milling of the hexagonal close packed (HCP) metals Hf, Ti and Zr powders, unknown nanocrystalline phases with face centered cubic (FCC) structure were found. The FCC phases could be either allotropes of the respective metals or impurity stabilized phases. However, upon MM under high purity conditions, it was revealed that the FCC phases were impurity stabilized. En plus des phases H, Q et L détectées en diffraction des rayons X, apparaît une structure à cylindres flexibles caractérisée par des défauts (dislocations, disinclinaisons, domaines focaux, joints de flexions et de torsions). Nous pensons que ces défauts sont une étape vers la transition HQ. Le modèle de structure de la phase à cylindres flexibles que nous proposons est discuté et comparé aux modèles proposés par d'autres auteurs. Nous avons analysé par microscopie électronique à transmission et par diffraction des neutrons les alliages quasicristallins suivants: Ti2Fe, Al65Cu20Fe15, Al71Pd19Mn10, Al65Cu20Fe10Cr5, Al65Cu17,5 et Al63Cu17,5Si2. Toutes ces études abordent deux aspects différents de ces alliages : les phases quasicristallines et leurs approximants cristallins. Dans le premier aspect, nous avons étudié la structure et la formation des phases icosaédriques Ti-Fe, Al-Cu-Fe et Al-Pd-Mn. Les mécanismes de croissance ont été identifiés. Les vitesses de croissance de ces quasicristaux sont très faibles par rapport à celles des cristaux. En ce qui concerne le deuxième aspect, nous nous sommes attachés à l'étude des approximants de la phase décagonale dans les alliages Al65Cu20Fe10Cr5 et Al63Cu17,5Co17,5Si2. Nous avons pu relier la phase décagonale à ses approximants en mettant en évidence les mêmes types d'unités structurales. Nous avons aussi mis l'accent sur la phase de type CsCl qui peut être la structure de base pour toutes les structures quasicristallines et cristallines étudiées dans ce travail

This dissertation explores the use of anion photoelectron imaging to interrogate electronic dynamics in small chemical systems with an emphasis on photoelectron angular distributions. Experimental ion generation, mass selection, laser photodetachment and photoelectron imaging were performed in a negative-ion photoelectron imaging spectrometer described in detail. Results for photodetachment from the simplest anion, H⁻, are used to illustrate fundamental principles of quantum mechanics and provide basic insight into the physics behind photoelectron imaging from a pedagogical perspective. This perspective is expanded by introducing imaging results for additional, representative atomic and small molecular anions (O⁻, NH₂⁻ and N₃⁻) obtained at multiple photon energies to address the energy-dependence of photoelectron angular distributions both conceptually and semi-quantitatively in terms of interfering partial photoelectron waves. The effect of solvation on several of these species (H⁻, O⁻, and NH₂⁻) is addressed in photoelectron imaging of several series of cluster anions. The 532 and 355 nm energy spectra for H⁻(NH₃)n and NH₂⁻(NH₃)n (n = 0-5) reveal that these species are accurately described as the core anion solute stabilized electrostatically by n loosely coordinated NH3 molecules. The photoelectron angular distributions for solvated H⁻ deviate strongly from those predicted for unsolvated H⁻ as the electron kinetic energy approaches zero, indicating a shift in the partial-wave balance consistent with both solvation-induced perturbation (and symmetry-breaking) of the H⁻ parent orbital and photoelectron-solvent scattering. The photoelectron energy spectra obtained for the cluster series [O(N₂O)n]⁻ and [NO(N₂O)n]⁻ indicate the presence of multiple structural isomers of the anion cores, the former displaying sharp core-switching at n = 4, the latter isomer coexistence over the entire range studied. The photoelectron angular distributions for detachment from the O⁻(N₂O)n and NO⁻(N₂O)n isomers deviate strongly from those expected for bare O⁻ and NO⁻, respectively, in the region of an anionic shape resonance of N₂O, suggesting resonant photoelectron-solvent scattering. Partial-wave models for two-centered photoelectron interference in photodetachment from dissociating I₂⁻ is presented and discussed in the context of previous results. New time-resolved photoelectron imaging results for I₂⁻, for both parallel and perpendicular pump and probe beam polarizations, are presented and briefly discussed. Finally, new ideas and directions are proposed.

Titanium and aluminium alloys are among the most used construct materials due to their physical and mechanical properties except steels. The joining of these alloys can improve properties of whole construction but it is still difficult task. Especially welding of titanium and aluminium alloys is difficult cause formation of undesirable intermetalic phases in the weld. This thesis focuses on influences of electron beam welding parameters especially focusing and deflection of beam and preheating of base material to quality of heterogeneous join of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V and aluminium alloy EN AW-6061 – T651. There is described preparation of welded joins and brazed joins in the thesis, which are evaluated by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS analysis of chemical composition. There was evaluated presence and chemical composition of formated intermetalic phases in the welded joins and quality and defects in the brazed joins.

Les isolants de Mott forment une vaste classe de matériaux corrélés aux nombreuses propriétés fascinantes. Ces composés subissent divers types de transitions isolant-métal (IMT). La découverte récente d'un TIM pilotée en tension, appelé Transition de Mott Electrique (EMT), a suscité beaucoup d'intérêt. Cette TME, qui peut être volatile ou non-volatile, ouvre la voie à des applications de rupture, comme les neurones artificiels ou les mémoires de Mott. Une frontière actuelle de la recherche consiste donc à étudier et comprendre les TIM dans les isolants de Mott placés hors équilibre par des stimuli externes tels que des impulsions de champ électrique ou laser ultra-rapides. Dans ce contexte, ces travaux de thèse portent sur le mécanisme de l'IMT pilotée par un champ électrique et / ou des impulsions lumineuses dans les isolants de Mott. Notre étude de l’isolant de Mott emblématique V2O3: Cr clarifie la nature de la phase créée sous champ électrique. Nous montrons en effet que les porteurs chauds générés à la TME induisent une compression locale du réseau selon des chemins filamentaires. La persistance d'une phase compressée métastable explique la non-volatilité de l'EMT. D'autre part, notre expérience de pompe-sonde IR ultra-rapide indique que la photoexcitation de V2O3: Cr lance une onde de déformation compressive conduisant à une IMT macroscopique pilotée par un effet élastique. Enfin, l'application simultanée d'impulsions lumineuses et électriques dans l'isolant de Mott GaTa4Se8 confirme que la TME est basée sur l'accumulation de porteurs chauds, et permet ainsi la réalisation d'un neurone électro-optique artificiel de Mott<br>Mott insulators are a broad class of strongly correlated materials with numerous fascinating properties. These compounds undergo various types of Insulator to metal transitions (IMT). The recent discovery of a voltage-driven IMT, called Electric Mott Transition (EMT), has attracted much attention. This EMT can be volatile or non-volatile. Both properties lead to breakthrough applications, such as Mott artificial neurons or Mott memories. Therefore, a current frontier of research is to study and understand Insulator to metal transitions in Mott insulators driven out-of-equilibrium by external stimuli such as a short electric field or ultrafast laser pulses. In this context, the Ph.D. work focuses on the mechanism of the IMT driven by electric field and/or light pulses in Mott insulators. This work unravels the pivotal roles of hot carriers and electron-lattice coupling at the IMT driven by electric or light pulses. Our study of the iconic Mott system V2O3:Cr reveals the nature of the phase created under electric field. We show that hot carriers generated at the EMT induces a lattice compression in a filamentary path. The persistence of a metastable compressed phase is responsible for the EMT's non-volatility. On the other hand, our ultrafast IR pump-probe experiment suggests that the photoexcitation of V2O3:Cr launches a compressive strain wave promoting an Insulator to metal phase transformation. Finally, the concomitant application of light and electric pulses in the Mott insulator GaTa4Se8 confirms that the EMT is based on the accumulation of hot carriers, and enables the implementation of an artificial electrooptic Mott neuron

La microstructure d'un alliage eutectique Nd-Fe a été étudiée grâce à la microscopie électronique à transmission. Il apparaît que le composé métastable A1 est constitué de deux composés nanocristallins, dont les compositions sont proches de Nd20Fe80 et Nd40Fe60 (% at. ). L'origine de la formation de tels composés est interprétée dans un diagramme de phases binaire métastable, incluant la phase NdFe2. Les caractéristiques structurales des autres phases du système binaire sont également étudiées. L'addition d'aluminium aux alliages Nd-Fe dont la composition est riche en Nd modifie drastiquement les propriétés macroscopiques (coercitivité, dureté). Ces effets sont liés aux modifications microstructurales apportées par l'aluminium (disparition de la phase A1 au profit de la phase ternaire U). La microstructure de ces alliages est voisine de celle de la phase intergranulaire rencontrée dans les aimants (Fe, Al)-Nd-B. Une étude bibliographique a confirmé que la phase U s'y présentait sous la forme de lamelles. Son influence sur la coercitivité des aimants est discutée. La structure cristalline polytypique de la phase U a été mise en évidence par diffraction électronique. Les polytypes 12R, 4H, 8H ont été identifiés. Une méthode permettant de déterminer les positions atomiques au sein de la maille polytypique est brièvement expliquée

This thesis proposes a technique to determine and improve the performance of a sensorless speed estimator for an induction motor based on Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA). The theoretical concepts underlying the parameter based observer are developed first and then the model of the observer is built using Simulink. The observer is developed based on Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS). The dynamic performance of the observer and its behavior due to variation of machine parameters is studied. The error in speed estimated using this observer is shown and the ability of MCSA to retune the rotor speed from the stator current spectrum. The spectrum estimation technique has been implemented using a software routine in Matlab. Both the observer and MCSA techniques were implemented practically on an induction motor. The performance of the combined sensorless speed estimation system was tested and verified.

The first molecular scattering observed using the new Edinburgh electron diffraction apparatus is detailed in this thesis. The new apparatus utilises a phosphor screen/CCD detection system rather than the photographic plates more commonly used in electron diffraction studies. The electron beam is provided by a telefocus electron gun. Two molecular target sources have been investigated: a Campargue-type molecular beam and an effusive needle source. Calibration of the apparatus has been attempted using argon gas. Carbon tetrafluoride, CF<SUB>4</SUB>, has been used as a typical gas-phase molecule and its scattering investigated extensively, while preliminary results for a more complex molecule, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, are also reported. Finally, the structure refinement of di-<I>t-</I>butyl(trichlorosilyl)phosphane using data from the existing electron diffraction apparatus is reported.

A new gas-phase electron diffraction apparatus is reported in this thesis. The machine complements the existing electron diffraction set-up at Edinburgh University. The new apparatus utilises an electron counting device consisting of a pair of stacked microchannel plates and a novel, position-sensitive anode counter rather than the photographic plate-rotating sector method more commonly used in electron diffraction studies. The work carried out with this detector is discussed together with results from a simulation program designed to evaluate the operational capabilities of the device under a range of experimental conditions. The molecular target source was provided by a Campargue-type molecular beam and the electron beam was produced by a telefocus electron gun. Both of these beams have been fully characterised and the results are presented in this work. A short review is given of the current developments in gas-phase electron diffraction. Finally, the structural refinements of two molecules studied using the photographic method are reported. These are 1,2-di-<I>tert</I>-butyldisilane and 1,2-dicarbapentaborane(7).

The problematics of weldability of heterogeneous welds of aluminium and titanium alloys produced by electron beam welding is discussed in this work. Homogenous welds of selected alloys were analyzed in the first stage. Welding of these materials relates to formation of intermetallic phases at the interface of base materials due to differences in physical, chemical and metallurgical properties of base materials. One of the prerequisites for producing high quality weld joints is to find optimal process parameters. The influence of selected process parameters to integrity, structure and mechanical properties of heterogeneous Al/Ti joints is evaluated.

Thesis advisor: Ziqiang Wang<br>Exotic phases and associated phase transitions in low dimensions have been a fascinating frontier and a driving force in modern condensed matter physics since the 80s. Due to strong correlation effect, they are beyond the description of mean-field theory based on a single-particle picture and Landau's symmetry-breaking theory of phase transitions. These new phases of matter require new physical quantities to characterize them and new languages to describe them. This thesis is devoted to the study on exotic phases of correlated electrons in two spatial dimensions. We present the following efforts in understanding two-dimensional exotic phases: (1) Using Zn vertex algebra, we give a complete classification and characterization of different one-component fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, including their ground state properties and quasiparticles. (2) In terms of a non-unitary transformation, we obtain the exact form of statistical interactions between composite fermions in the lowest Landau level (LLL) with v=1/(2m), m=1,2... By studying the pairing instability of composite fermions we theoretically explains recently observed FQHE in LLL with v=1/2,1/4. (3) We classify different Z2 spin liquids (SLs) on kagome lattice in Schwinger-fermion representation using projective symmetry group (PSG). We propose one most promising candidate for the numerically discovered SL state in nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on kagome lattice}. (4) By analyzing different Z2 spin liquids on honeycomb lattice within PSG classification, we find out the nature of the gapped SL phase in honeycomb lattice Hubbard model, labeled sublattice pairing state (SPS) in Schwinger-fermion representation. We also identify the neighboring magnetic phase of SPS as a chiral-antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase and analyze the continuous phase transition between SPS and CAF phase. For the first time we identify a SL called 0-flux state in Schwinger-boson representation with one (SPS) in Schwinger-fermion representation by a duality transformation. (5) We show that when certain non-collinear magnetic order coexists in a singlet nodal superconductor, there will be Majorana bound states in vortex cores/on the edges of the superconductor. This proposal opens a window for discovering Majorana fermions in strongly correlated electrons. (6) Motivated by recent numerical discovery of fractionalized phases in topological flat bands, we construct wavefunctions for spin-polarized fractional Chern insulators (FCI) and time reversal symmetric fractional topological insulators (FTI) by parton approach. We show that lattice symmetries give rise to different FCI/FTI states even with the same filling fraction. For the first time we construct FTI wavefunctions in the absence of spin conservation which preserve all lattice symmetries. L’alliage d’aluminium 6061-T6 a été choisi comme matériau de structure du casier et du caisson du cœur de réacteur Jules Horowitz (RJH). Transparent aux neutrons, il doit ses bonnes propriétés mécaniques à la précipitation de fines aiguilles nanométriques appelées béta'' contenant Mg et Si et à la présence de dispersoïdes Al(Cr,Fe,Mn)Si jouant un rôle important dans la résistance à la recristallisation. Le caisson et le casier seront soumis à de forts flux neutroniques à une température avoisinant les 50°C. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier les évolutions microstructurales de l’alliage sous irradiation et plus particulièrement la stabilité des précipités. Pour cela, des études analytiques par irradiations in-situ et ex-situ aux électrons et aux ions à température ambiante et forte dose ont été réalisées ainsi qu’une étude du comportement des précipités sous irradiations aux neutrons à faible dose. La caractérisation fine des précipités par Microscopie Electronique en Transmission a montré que les dispersoïdes sont stables sous irradiation, cependant ils présentent une structure cœur/coquille avec un cœur riche en (Fe, Mn) et une coquille riche en Cr qui s’accentue sous irradiation par accélération de la diffusion. En revanche, les nano-phases type béta’’ sont déstabilisées par l’irradiation. Elles sont dissoutes par irradiation aux ions au profit de l’apparition d’amas riches en Mg, Si, Al, Cu et Cr participant à l’augmentation du durcissement de l’alliage, tandis qu’elles tendent à se transformer en précipités cubiques sous irradiation aux neutrons<br>The 6061-T6 Aluminium alloy, whose microstructure contains Al(Fe,Mn,Cr)Si dispersoids and hardening needle-shaped beta” precipitates (Mg, Si), has been chosen as the structural material for the core vessel of the Material Testing Jules Horowitz Nuclear Reactor. Because it will be submitted to high neutron fluxes at a temperature around 50°C, it is necessary to study microstructural evolutions induced by irradiation and especially the stability of the second phase particles. In this work, analytical studies by in-situ and ex-situ electron and ion irradiations have been performed, as well as a study under neutron irradiation. The precipitates characterization by Transmission Electron Microscopy demonstrates that Al(Fe,Mn,Cr)Si dispersoids are driven under irradiation towards their equilibrium configuration, consisting of a core/shell structure, enhanced by irradiation, with a (Fe, Mn) enriched core surrounded by a Cr-enriched shell. In contrast, the (Mg,Si) beta” precipitates are destabilized by irradiation. They dissolve under ion irradiation in favor of a new precipitation of (Mg,Si,Cu,Cr,Al) rich clusters resulting in an increase of the alloy’s hardness. beta’’ precipitates tend towards a transformation to cubic precipitates under neutron irradiation

Les quasicristaux sont des solides ordonnes presentant une coherence orientationnelle a longue distance sans periodicite de translation. Leurs proprietes electroniques sont spectaculaires. Par exemple, la phase alpdre presente une resistivite de semi-conducteur (> 10 ohm. Cm a 4 k), bien que sa densite d'etats au niveau de fermi soit environ 1/10 de celle de l'aluminium pur. Une etude numerique de plusieurs alliages intermetalliques a base d'aluminium et d'approximants realistes de quasicristaux a permis de degager deux caracteristiques essentielles de leur structure electronique: un creusement important de la densite d'etats au niveau de fermi par rapport aux electrons libres, ce qui est attendu pour les alliages de hume-rothery, et une structure tres piquee dans la densite d'etats. Cette derniere propriete, specifique des quasicristaux, a ete correlee avec les proprietes de transport electroniques. Le role des metaux de transition a ete etudie par une generalisation du modele de l'etat lie virtuel en tenant compte de la specificite de ces alliages. Nous presentons, entre autre, une explication de la valence negative apparente des metaux de transition qui est evoquee depuis longtemps dans les intermetalliques. En outre, cette etude montre que les metaux de transition jouent un role important dans le creusement de la densite d'etats au niveau de fermi. Dans le cadre de la theorie de la diffusion, nous analysons la localisation des electrons par un agregat atomique dans une matrice metallique. Cette etude montre l'existence d'etats lies virtuels d'agregats qui peuvent expliquer la structure piquee de la densite d'etats et sont coherents avec la notion d'etats critiques generalement consideres pour decrire le spectre electronique des pavages quasiperiodiques. Cependant, la stabilite des agregats n'est pas due a cette localisation car leur energie de cohesion est la somme d'interactions de paires. Cela renforce l'image des quasicristaux comme des alliages de hume-rothery

Gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) is the only viable technique for the accurate structural study of gas-phase molecules that contain more than ~10 atoms. Recent advances in Edinburgh have made it possible to study larger, more complex, stable molecules using the SARACEN method. This thesis is concerned with obtaining the structures of unstable species, using both standard GED techniques and by developing a new method in which ash vacuum pyrolysis is used to generate short-lived species in situ. In the first part of this thesis nine primary phosphines (R-PH2) with different substituents (R = methyl, vinyl, ethynyl, allenyl, allyl, propargyl, phenyl, benzyl and chloromethyl) are studied by GED. Vinylarsine and vinyldichloroarsine are also studied. Primary phosphines and arsines appear infrequently in the literature owing to their toxicity and high reactivity, especially of the unsaturated systems. The conformational behaviour in these molecules and trends throughout the series are rationalised. As appropriate, comparisons are made to analogous amines and the differences found are discussed. Tertiary phosphines (R3P) are routinely protected by complexation with borane (BH3) and it has been proposed that this technique could be extended to primary phosphines. As an extension of the initial investigation, the GED study of methylphosphine-borane offers an insight into structural changes that occur upon complexation, although attempts to study larger phosphine-borane complexes by GED proved dificult. The structures and bonding trends in a series of phosphineborane adducts are discussed, mainly using the results of ab initio calculations. The second part of the thesis details the implementation of a new, very high temperature nozzle, which allows the generation of short-lived species by pyrolysis. The workings of this nozzle are discussed and the study of the structure of ketene, generated from three different precursors, is detailed. The benzyl radical has also been studied, and a preliminary GED structure is presented. As a result of this work the molecular structures of Meldrum's acid and dibenzylsulfone are also presented, having been determined in the gas phase for the first time.
