Streszczenie:
AbstractOur study examines the effect of water utilization together with the effect of water quality on economic growth across countries. We constructed a panel of 177 countries covering the period of 1960–2009. We analyse two dependent variables, gross domestic product per capita and the average of five years of growth. The analysis is conducted using a fixed effects model and fixed effects with instrumental variables. We find that although water utilization affects growth, water quality also proves to be highly significant and affects growth in both the short and long run to a greater degree than water quantity.

Streszczenie:
A study was carried out in coastal Ramanathapuram district to find out the influence of sea water intrusion on quality of irrigation water. The analytical results indicated that the ground water in the study area was sodic. The Residual Sodium Corbonate (RSC) value was negative in ninety three percent of the samples analysed. The Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) of irrigation water was found to be positively associated with SAR of the Soil Water Extract (SWE). A wide variations in the other quality parameters viz. potential salinity, permeability index, sodium ratio and adjusted SAR were observed due to the intrusion of sea water in to the ground fresh water aquifers of the coastal belt at various degrees. Significant positive correlation was noticed between SAR of irrigation water and the SWE of irrigated surface soils (r=0.231) No relationship existed between SAR and ESP of the coarse taxtured soils in the coastal areas.

We conduct a laboratory experiment to test for the existence of the endowment effect—a gap between willingness to accept and willingness to pay—for improved drinking water quality using a within-subject design. We find a statistically significant and positive gap. Willingness to accept is 62 to 125 cents higher than willingness to pay on average, indicating the presence of endowment effects. This gap is robust to information about the quality of water being consumed. We also identify some heterogeneity in the size of the gaps that is associated with differences in subjects' knowledge of drinking water quality and disparities in their incomes.

Effluents from the treatment plant of Saint Jean de Monts and Saint Hilaire de Riez have been injected into a confined ground water for twelve years. This ground water is connected with the sea. Effluent floats on the surface of the aquifer and it disperses by dilution at the freshwater/salt water interface. The aquifer acts as a direct overflow pipe. The injection of effluent has preserved the quality of waters in the coastal area and in the Breton Marsh.

The quality of the surface water (rivers) around Warri metropolis was evaluated using Water Quality Index (WQI) techniques. The study was carried out to assess the suitability of the water samples collected from different river bodies’ around Warri metropolis. The water quality index (WQI) was determined based on their various physico-chemical parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolves solids, total suspended solids, sulphates, nitrates, phosphates, chlorides, turbidity, biochemical oxygen demanded. The water quality indexes values obtained varied greatly from 110.12 to 821.5. The result is quite high due to high turbidity (9mg/l – 119mg/l) and total suspended solid (10mg/l – 124mg/l). The presence of faecal coliform in the various water bodies is very alarming which ranges from 2 – 16 cfu against the stated standard of nil by most regulatory agencies and as such may pose detrimental health effect when consumed by individuals within those areas if not properly treated. This may be due to poor waste management practice along the rivers course. To avert this process, effective waste management and control along the water course should be encouraged.

The functions and utility of emission and immission standards are discussed as instruments in the management of water quality. Especially the intrinsic a-priori trade-off associated with setting immission standards, the complexity of the cause-effect relationships and the variability of water quality are used as an argument to rely less heavily on such standards. It is argued that simulation, systems analysis, Habitat Suitability Criteria and plan effect matrices are tools that can be implemented and used more effectively.

Water quality of the Zayandehrud River, located in an arid region of central part of Iran, was assessed using National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index (NSF WQI) calculated by four aggregation methods. Water samples were collected monthly (July 2006 to June 2007) from eight stations in the middle of the river. The parameters required for the NSF WQI calculations including saturation percent of dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, fecal coliforms, pH, nitrate, total phosphate, temperature deviation, total dissolved solids and turbidity were measured. According to WQIm which appeared to be more adapted to environmental conditions of the Zayandehrud River, the studied section of the river was considered as “reasonable” to “polluted” water quality. All of the calculated water quality indices showed the lowest values in August. In addition to BOD5 and fecal coliform amounts which were generally high, nitrate and total phosphate concentrations were also considerably increased due to agriculture practices in August. Generally, BOD5 and fecal coliforms are the main water quality subindices that reflect the effect of anthropogenic activities on the water quality of this river.

Streszczenie:
In western Canada, dugouts are the primary source of water for beef cattle during the summer months. Over time, drought conditions and/or direct access by grazing animals have a negative effect on water constituents and overall water quality. A study was conducted to determine the effects of improvements in water quality on cattle performance. The effect of pasture water quality on weight gain of beef cattle was assessed with 44 Hereford yearling steers over 5 years and 40 Angus cow–calf pairs over 3 years. From 1999 to 2003, cattle were allocated to 1 of 4 treatments, which comprised untreated dugout water pumped to a trough, aerated water pumped to a trough, and coagulated and chlorinated water pumped to a trough, all compared with direct access by livestock to the water source. Data were collected on livestock weight gains, water consumption, fecal parasites, environmental conditions, water chemistry, biological constituents, and forage production and quality. Water treatment by aeration or coagulation tended to improve steer weight gains (P < 0.05) over untreated water from a dugout in 3 of 5 years. Daily weight gains tended to be improved slightly by simply pumping water to a trough without treatment. Water aerated and pumped to a trough in early summer tended to produce greater (P < 0.05) weight gains in calves than those drinking directly from the dugout. The effect of treatment on improving cattle weight gains appeared to be related to improved water palatability, which increased water and feed consumption. Water chemistry and biological constituents analysed did not identify significant differences among treatments. These results suggest that improving water quality with aeration and pumping to a trough will improve weight gain 9–10% over a 90-day grazing period in most years.

One of the possibilities to enhance nutritional benefits of processed cheese is the incorporation of whey proteins. However, it is necessary to characterise the effect of their addition on its texture, rheology, and sensory quality. Processed cheese was manufactured from Edam cheese, low-fat fresh cheese, emulsifying salts, and water phase (drinking water, non-modified and modified reconstituted whey). Modification of whey was performed by enzymatic protein hydrolysis and additional removal of hydrophobic peptides. The texture of products was characterised by texture profile analysis, rheology by dynamic oscillation rheometry, and sensory quality by descriptive quantitative analysis. The effect of whey protein addition on the texture and rheology of cheese was dependent on protein concentration and modification. Native whey concentration in comparison with water decreased hardness and chewiness and enhanced adhesiveness of samples. Higher concentration increased hardness and chewiness and lowered adhesiveness. Modified whey compared to the native one produced softer and better chewable products. However, the sensory analysis of products did not demonstrate any differences in their hedonic quality.

The assessment of a river water’ quality is an essential procedure of monitor programs and is used to collect basic environmental data. The management of integrated water resources in a sustainable method is also necessary to allow future generations to meet their water needs. The main objective of this research is to assess the effect of the Diyala River on Tigris River water quality using Geographic Information System (GIS) technique. Water samples have been collected monthly from November 2017 to April 2018 from four selected locations in Tigris and Diyala Rivers using the grab sampling method. Fourteen parameters were studied which are Turbidity, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Biological Oxygen Demand, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Sulphate, Phosphate, Sodium, and Total Alkalinity. The results of GIS maps showed that the water quality of the Tigris River nearly affected by the water quality of the Diyala River within the locations selected. The maps also reveal that in March and April 2018 the quality of surface water got a sudden peak compared with the other months. This is due to the increase in both the parameter of Turbidity and Total Dissolved Solids.
