The aims of this paper is to discuss the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) education in Malaysian educational system and how it has been implemented in teaching method course. The policy of STEM education started in the United States and has been expanded to all over the world including Malaysia. The policy of STEM education in Malaysia has its own understanding based on Malaysian Education policy. In ensuring the successful of STEM education, preservice teachers need to be trained. Hence, School of Educational Studies has taken this initiative to train these student teachers through Chemistry Teaching Methods course. In this course, student teachers need to plan a lesson plan using 5E instructional model. They also need to teach based on that lesson plan through simulated teaching in ensuring STEM elements are successfully implemented.

Streszczenie:
Educational change, particularly change involving the adoption of educational innovations, is a complex process. In Malaysia, the significant role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in promoting digital education is reflected in the national ICT in education policy. Nevertheless, studies in the Malaysian educational context have shown that the policy implementation resulted in varying degrees of success. Through a discourse analysis approach, this paper aims to examine the evaluation studies on large scale initiatives introduced to digitize the Malaysian education system, from the Smart Schools programme to the incorporation of the Frog Virtual Learning Environment in classroom. The rationale behind these top-down initiatives and how they affected the stakeholders at the micro level, namely, teachers and students, are reviewed and analysed. The analysis informs our understanding of the factors that contribute to the successful and unsuccessful implementation of these initiatives and guide the planning of future policies.

Streszczenie:
Today, majority of the world population are getting more concern on products impact towards the environment. In many parts of the world, electric vehicles (EV) are gaining popularity with vehicle owners due to higher fuel price and lower carbon monoxide emitted to the environment. In Malaysia EV technology is still in infancy stage and many Malaysian drivers are not familiar with this technology. The two main objectives of this study are to investigate the Malaysian driver’s perceptions and awareness on EV technology (i.e. price, driving range, charging point infrastructure and cost of ownership) and to identify EV potential and marketability. A set of questionnaire was developed, pilot tested for its reliability and validity; and distributed to 300 respondents. However, only 112 respondents returned the completed survey questionnaire giving a response rate of 37.3%. The survey finding shows the respondents’ perceptions and knowledge were varied with respect to gender, age, educational level and monthly household income. In depth analysis of the survey results revealed that respondents with higher educational level, age and household income are more likely willing to invest in EV compared to those with lower educational level and household income. Their main positive perceptions on EV are less maintenance, zero carbon monoxide emission to the atmosphere and lower energy cost (i.e. charging cost) compared to fuel cost.

Streszczenie:
The younger generations of students called Digital Natives learn via technology. The Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 has taken the initiatives to implement Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in learning in bid to cater to their learning styles. However, the implementation has not been smooth-sailing as most teachers have not been integrating ICT in their lessons seamlessly. Goldberg’s (1981) Big Five Model of Personality can explain various usage of ICT based on their respective trait but TESL (Teaching English as Second Language) undergraduates in the Malaysian context had not been studied before. The researcher purposively selected 72 TESL undergraduates from the Faculty of Educational Studies in a public university in Malaysia for the study using a questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The findings reported high levels of ICT integration and motivation in integrating it. Next, they scored the highest in Openness to experience towards ICT integration in L2 teaching while low in Neuroticism. There was also a statistically significant, moderate, positive relationship between their level of motivation, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion and Openness traits and their ICT integration in L2 teaching. These findings present vital implications for TESL program and course coordinators to facilitate their pre-service teachers to leverage ICT in their teaching practice.

This paper reviews major issues of mobile technology and mobile web usage among university students, including characteristics, importance and problems faced by university students when accessing web sites through mobile devices. This article also reviews the technology adoption models/theories that will best explain the adoption of IT/IS. The author identified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the best model in explaining adoption of mobile web because TAM is the most suitable in explaining behavioural intention in the context of mobile devices. Mobile Web is the World Wide Web which is accessed through a mobile device such as laptop computer, smart phone or tablet. It establishes the entirety of the Internet and is not limited to webpages which have been specifically designed to be viewed through mobile devices. Distinctive features of mobile technology especially mobile web technology and its progressive impacts on information transfer and learning process has created many educational opportunities for higher education institutions. Although mobile devices are highly flexible, accessible and convenient, students are still facing great problems when they use mobile web for educational purpose.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to information technology (IT) implementation in the curriculum. The focus was on Malaysian Ministry of Education Polytechnic (MoEP) faculty members' attitudes toward IT, as well as IT availability and IT use in teaching. The response rate from the 332 surveys sent to the MoEP was 75.9%. Faculty members as a whole appeared to have readiness for adoption of changes related to IT use in teaching despite the lack of IT use in general. The use of selected IT items was skewed greatly in the direction of non-use. Faculty attitudes toward the use of IT in their teaching were very positive. The overall professional development experiences in IT that respondents had were greatly skewed toward non-participation. Results for items associated with supports services showed that they were available for faculty use. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents reported to face barriers to the use IT in their teaching. The extent of IT use in general for male respondents and female respondents showed a significant difference among gender. ANOVA revealed no difference between MoEP membership and IT use in general. Analysis of department membership and IT use in general revealed no difference between the two. Highest level of education had a low significant correlation with extent of IT use in general. A low negative correlation was shown between highest level of education and other demographic variables. Age had a moderate positive correlation with years served for the MoEP and a high correlation with years served for the MoE. Years served for the MoEP also has a moderate correlation with years served for the MoE. There were no significant correlations among variables except for online discussion and teaching load. Highest level of education showed a low correlation with email, WWW, and scanner. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine what variables were the best predictors of IT use. Results revealed an R2 of 0.04. Highest level of education contributed significantly to the variance. Adoption proneness proved to be a predictor for IT use in teaching, while other selected demographic variables were not significant predictors.

Streszczenie:
The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) stress the need for Malaysian engineering graduates to be able to integrate sustainable development knowledge, skills and values in their professional practice. The 2012 Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) manual outlines 12 outcomes that students of Malaysian institutions of higher learning offering engineering programmes are expected to develop upon completion of their studies. Of the 12 outcomes, three are explicitly linked to sustainable development. While institutions of higher learning are required to develop the prescribed skill set using outcome based approaches to learning, integration measures are not specifically stipulated. 30 hypothetical competences were developed as a means of addressing the issue of integrating sustainable development outcomes within the undergraduate engineering programme curriculum. Using a private higher learning institution offering engineering programmes as a case study, this study set out to explore the views of the institution’s stakeholders, i.e. the final year undergraduate engineering students, academicians, university management and engineers, as well as education for sustainable development experts and ESD practitioners on (a) the extent to which sustainable development and education for sustainable development is incorporated within the engineering curriculum of the higher learning institution (b) the inclusion of sustainable development programme and module learning outcomes within the undergraduate engineering curriculum and how it can be included within the curriculum, and (c) the additional components needed for the EESD framework for undergraduate engineering education in Malaysia. Respondents’ perspectives were sought through a triangulation mixed methods approach, through surveys, interviews and analysis of documents. Findings of the study were then used to develop the proposed (a) guidelines to incorporate sustainable development competences holistically within undergraduate engineering programme outcomes and common module learning outcomes, and the (b) Whole Institution EESD Framework.

Wan, Omar Wan Nor Aishah. "The integration of content and English in the teaching of information technology subjects at polytechnics and community colleges in Malaysia". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/31475/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This mixed-methods study investigates the teaching of Iinformation Technology (IT) subjects at polytechnics and community colleges in Malaysia as the policy for the medium of instruction for Science, Mathematics and Technical subjects at primary and seconday education sector changed from Bahasa Malaysia to English in 2003 and back to Bahasa Malaysia again in 2009. However, as polytechnics and community colleges are under the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), they are guided by the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) (2015). The higher learning institutions in Malaysia do not clearly define English or Bahasa Malaysia as the only medium of instruction due to factors such as internationalization and the needs to be able to produce globally competitive graduates. Due to these factors, the use of English or bilingualism at higher education sector becomes necessary. This research provides an insight into the transition period when the polytechnics and community colleges started receiving the first batch of students who had gone through ETeMS in 2008, and therefore, the lecturers were required to teach Technical subjects through English. The objectives of the study are to investigate the attitudes and motivation levels of the lecturers at polytechnics and community colleges in Malaysia with regards to the policy of teaching IT subjects through English, to examine the strategies the lecturers used to upgrade their English and to explore the strategies the lecturers used to teach their subjects through English. The quantitative data were collected via a survey during the first phase of the study. 211 out of 265 IT lecturers from polytechnics and community colleges across Malaysia had responded to the survey. The data from the survey provided information regarding the demography of the population, their attitudes and motivation towards the teaching of content subjects through English, as well as the strategies that they used in order to improve their own English so that they could teach their students better. The survey also gathered information regarding the lecturers’ experiences and the strategies they used when they had to teach their students through English. The findings from the survey were used to categorize the lecturers according to their motivation levels and teaching practice. In order to obtain lessons from best practices, a group of lecturers representing positive disposition were selected and finally, seven lecturers managed to participate in the observation sessions. The qualitative phase consisted of observation sessions and in-depth exploration of the lecturers’ background and experiences as well as the views concerning the teaching of IT through English. The teaching practice and strategies were then grouped, interpreted and rationalized through research lenses, which include CLIL, Multimodal approach and good teaching practices. The findings revealed that the majority of the lecturers had positive attitudes and moderate to high levels of motivation with regards to the policy of teaching IT subjects through English. The majority of the lecturers received little training to upgrade their English level, especially while in-service, and they were not self-driven to pursue the upgrading of English through their own initiatives. Learning to upgrade English was mainly obtained through incidental learning. For the teaching strategies, about half of the lecturers used only English for certain functions of teaching IT such as when giving instruction, advice, explanation and introduction or conclusion. Some other lecturers used code-mixing and translation when giving instruction, advice, explanation and introduction or conclusion. The majority of the lecturers also used simple English and English Technical terms, and they also had the freedom to adapt their teaching strategies. The majority of them did not teach English to make the students understand the lesson on IT. Teachers’ personality including years of experience play a role in effective teaching. Teachers with more years of experience were observed to be more able to conduct student-centred and dialogic interactive teaching compared to new teachers. Nevertheless, new teachers could also steer away from being teacher-centred while teaching if they had the initiatives to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Finally, recommendations were made in order to improve current teaching practices so that both lecturers and students were able to gain benefits. This requires not only the lecturers to be able to embrace change but also the commitment from MoHE, the polytechnic and community college policy makers and administrators as well as the positive attitudes of the students and the public. With the improvements in the teaching practices, it is hoped that polytechnics and community colleges will be able to produce quality graduates that meet the demands of the industries in Malaysia and worldwide.

Streszczenie:
Computer technology has been introduced into the field of language education for more than three decades. However, how individual learners interact with language learning multimedia programmes in different ways is not yet understood. A possible explanation is related to the learners variables. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of cognitive style, one of these variables, on the language learning process. The participants of this study were a group of ESL university students from Malaysia, who interacted with a language instruction CD-ROM. This study focuses on investigating the interaction process from the students perspective. Ridings Cognitive Style Analysis, a computer software that measures individuals cognitive style, was used to assist in identifying and categorizing students cognitive style. Thirty students cognitive style was measured before each student spent an average of three hours interacting with a language instruction CD-ROM. This study adopts the case study approach. The primary method of collecting data involved semi-structured interviews with students that focused on their experiences and preferences while interacting with language instruction CD-ROM. Factors that affected the interaction process were then examined to detect whether they were linked to the differences of students cognitive orientation. The findings of this study reflect the mixed results that previous researchers have found regarding the effect of cognitive style on students language learning experiences. Although responses toward the content, graphics and vocabulary items did partially reflect their cognitive orientation, cognitive style was not the only factor that influenced these students behaviours or preferences as they interacted with the language instruction CD-ROM. The study found factors that were not linked to the students cognitive styles, yet these also influenced the interaction process. These non-cognitive-style factors consisted of students language learning motivation, social presence, and their conception of language learning and cultural influence, which resulted in teacher-centeredness. As a result of these findings, theoretical, research and pedagogical implications are discussed. Recommendations and limitations of the study are also presented.

Streszczenie:
Flipped classroom is not a new concept in education. Students are expected to be well-prepared before coming to face-to-face sessions since they have to read/watch/listen to the lectures through the learning management system (LMS) or an e-learning portal before coming to the classes. What traditionally was practised is that students were given lectures during face-to-face sessions. Now, the lectures are online, and only activities to enhance students’ understanding will take place during face-to-face sessions. The concept is now being implemented successfully in some higher learning institutions in Malaysia, including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang; Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah; and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor. In fact, the emphasis is given by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia for all higher learning institutions to incorporate the use of technology in teaching and learning. Given this, the National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM) must also be prepared to rise to this challenge. This research becomes the main study on the use of flipped classroom at the NDUM

Streszczenie:
Malaysia is moving towards a developed country status and it is imperative that the healthcare provided be at a higher standard than it is today. As members of the healthcare team, nurses play an essential role in the provision of healthcare. As such it is timely that nurses’ education be upgraded. As most of them only have a certificate or diploma in nursing, one way to upgrade the nurses is by providing opportunities for a baccalaureate degree. However, due to the shortage of nurses, nurses find it a challenge to enroll in a full-time on-campus programme. One way to help nurses meet the challenge is by providing an online distance learning programme to Malaysian nurses. And, to ensure the success of the online distance learning programme, it was realized that the nursing students need to be adequately prepared for an online learning environment. How much preparation will be determined, among other things, by their prior experience and skill in using technology as well as by their belief and attitude towards online distance learning. A survey was conducted on a cohort group of students during a face-to-face precourse orientation, that is, prior to the start of the online program. The findings of the survey are presented and discussed in the paper and implications for the future are highlighted.
