Streszczenie:
AbstractThe church in Africa like its counterparts elsewhere in the world is called to fulfil the mission of Christ which is basically two fold; to liberate humankind on the social-political and economic plane and to lead them to salvation on the eschatological plane. This is self-evident for Christ was not only concerned with the spiritual needs of the people, but material as well. The question therefore arises how does the church in Africa bear witness to the spirit of God and conduct her mission with integrity in its contextual realities of HIV/AIDS, refugee crises, poverty, corruption and abuse of human rights? This paper argues that though the church faces this onerous task it is vibrant, alive and dynamic but for her to be relevant and effective she must develop more imaginative ways of doing mission, being church and theological formation. She needs to be a reconciler, mediating peace and healing due to the deep hurts and painful experiences the continent has encountered over the years. This calls for an ecumenical mission and vision that entails partnering in suffering by accompanying those in pain. She needs to disciple the members through surrendering herself to Christ to be purified, sanctified and renewed. She needs to provide courageous, empowered and effective leadership with moral integrity. She also needs to embody the spirit of unity and reconciliation in a pluralistic context and extend the biblical shalom of peace, justice to the marginalized poor, women displaced people, children, disabled and victims of all forms of violence. Mission with integrity also calls for listening to the other, dialogue and speaking out against all impediments to the gospel.

Streszczenie:
The question of the history of the reception of the Christian Bible in South Africa particularly by African- South Africans has not been a smooth ride. It was part of a bigger package that included among others, the importation of European patriarchy onto African soil, the land grabbing exercise which resulted in among others, the impoverishment of African peoples and, the emasculation of the African man. The latter in turn led to the intensification of patriarchy within the average African family. The preceding situation, was not helpful to the context and/or situation of African women who were already then, at the bottom of the patriarchal ladder, because, as can be expected, within the context of the Black church and theology then, little if any except for a handful of liberation theologians and members of some ecumenical bodies, was done to make the theology propagated then, relevant to pertinent issues which affected the lives of Black people.Given the historical marginalisation of women in the Bible and Theology, not only in South Africa, but also globally, it becomes obvious that even in our context, mainstream theology and biblical hermeneutics left issues pertaining to gender justice basically untouched. It is no wonder, as we will argue in this paper, that given that already vulnerable situation into which African women have been thrown into by the preceding factors as well as by how the Bible continues to be used in our HIV and AIDS contexts, their situation may be succinctly captured as that of a limping animal that has been made to climb the mountain! The Northern Sotho proverb or saying: Wa re o bona e hlota, wa e nameta thaba (while limping, you let it climb the mountain) simply means that a certain situation is being aggravated (by an external factor). The present article will use the preceding proverb as a hermeneutical lens through which to analyse the reception of the Bible by African women in the HIV and AIDS context of South Africa.

Streszczenie:
This thesis studies Archbishop Elias Zoghby and his efforts at Orthodox-Catholic reconciliation within the Patriarchate of Antioch in the light of contemporary ecumenical thought. He has spent the past forty years promoting the cause of unity among the Catholic and Orthodox Churches and has written several articles and books on the unification of the Byzantine Churches of Antioch. Kyr Elias encountered many challenges and criticisms for his project of Double Communion and received much attention for his theological contributions. Although his ideas have been set aside as impractical, it is argued that his treatment of the subject of ecumenism is based on the experiences of everyday life of the lay faithful of Antioch. As such it is a viable representation of lived communion. Chapter One examines briefly the history of the Church of Antioch its experience of the tragedy of schism, and its special vocation to breaking new ground, all from a perspective that helps to better understand the present ecumenical climate within that Church and the milieu from which Archbishop Zoghby emerged. Chapter Two introduces the man himself, his life and his ministry. In the third chapter the written ecumenical works of Archbishop Zoghby are examined chronologically. In Chapter Four is an analysis of his ideas, explored by means of the reactions of both the Catholic and the Orthodox authorities to his initiatives. Furthermore, this chapter sets Kyr Elias's writings alongside the ecumenical ideas of Pope John Paul II's encyclical Ut Unum Sint in order to compare and contrast the two. The conclusion notes some of the weaknesses of Archbishop Zoghby's initiative, but also highlights some aspects of his proposals that have not yet been fully accepted and perhaps not even fully understood by the ecumenical movement at large.

Summaries in English And Afrikaans
Text in Afrikaans
The biography focused on the life and work of Evert Philippus Groenewald in church historical perspective within the context of the twentieth century. It endeavoured to make a contribution to a period in the history of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) against the background of strife in matters related to the church, politics and other areas. Groenewald taught New Testament subjects as professor at the Faculty of Theology (Section 8 - DRC) at the University of Pretoria for 33 years. As one of the first four professors of the new Faculty of Theology he helped to lay a sound foundation. He served as dean of the Faculty for 21 years (1948 - 1969). As administrator and lecturer he played an important role in the establishment, recognition and development of the Faculty. He was a born exegete, the Nestor of New Testament science in SA. He is regarded as a great theologian and the doyen of New Testament research and exegesis in SA. As writer of Afrikaans theological literature Groenewald undeniably fulfilled the role of a pioneer. This was recognised by the award of the Stals-prize for Theology to him, the first time in history. Apart from this he received four honourary doctorates and various other important awards. He made an important contribution to Bible translation and translatory science. As church and cultural leader he strove to find solutions for the problems of his church and people. He made a significant contribution in the ecumenical field. Apartheid was given its biblical foundation by Groenewald during the forties. His intention was to stimulate thought in the search for a solution to the serious racial problem. Further facets of Groenewald's work await research in order to paint a representative theological portrait of him.

This chapter focuses on the contribution of the Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy (EHAIA) to discourses on churches and homosexuality in Africa. EHAIA is a program of the World Council of Churches (WCC) with a strong African ownership. Since the early 2000s, it has worked to sensitize African church leaders on issues relating to HIV and AIDS. As part of this, it has also sought to challenge homophobia and promote a positive understanding of sexual diversity. The chapter begins by discussing the historical, cultural and political contexts in which EHAIA has come to address the issue of same-sex sexuality. It then examines the methodologies utilized by EHAIA in its engagement with the theme, including publications, theological education, intergenerational conversations, pastoral dialogues, and contextual bible studies. The chapter concludes by an analysis of achievements and challenges.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The modern ecumenical movement is conventionally dated from an event that took place in the first year of Lesslie Newbigin’s life and within a hundred miles of his parents’ Northumbrian home. A world missionary conference was held at Edinburgh, Scotland, in June 1910 in order “to consider missionary problems in relation to the non-Christian world.” From that event sprang both the International Missionary Council, formally constituted in 1921, and (at least in the mind of Bishop Charles Henry Brent) the Faith and Order movement, whose first world conference would gather at Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1927. In 1948—the agreement of 1938 having been delayed by the Second World War—Faith and Order merged with the Life and Work movement from the 1920s to compose the World Council of Churches; and in 1961 they were joined by the International Missionary Council.

This brief, final chapter, summarizes the main points made in the previous chapters to demonstrate the relevance of Bonhoeffer’s theology for our time. In creatively appropriating biblical and patristic anthropology for our modern age, Bonhoeffer contributes important insights to Christian reflection on current debates about human nature, politics, and secularity. In drawing his insights from the Christ-centered, incarnational theology of the greater tradition, Bonhoeffer’s work also possesses a deeply ecumenical appeal much needed for our time. His Christian personalism, together with his careful correlation of the nature-grace relation appeals to Eastern Orthodox theologians and strongly resembles the integral humanism of Catholicism in thinkers like Henri de Lubac and Jacques Maritain. Given our present postmodern, secular culture, Bonhoeffer’s hermeneutic theology, his humanist ethics, and integral humanism offer exactly the biblically based, philosophically informed and ecumenically appealing model of engaging life, i.e., the kind of Christian humanism, Christians ought to consider in responding to current cultural issues.

‘Catholic’ is a criterion by which all churches are judged, not just an exclusive claim any one church makes for herself. This point was challenged by Cardinal Sadolet in his argument with Calvin in the sixteenth century but accepted by Vatican II in the twentieth when the Catholic Church asked for help from others in order to be more catholic. Reformed and other traditions responded by sending some of their most ecumenically qualified and respected theologians to help. ‘Receptive Ecumenism’ makes the challenge mutual: we are all in the business of learning to be more catholic. A case can thus be made for recognizing such theologians as John Calvin, Karl Barth, and Robert McAfee Brown as catholic theologians. From a Reformed perspective the good experience of seeing Pope John XXII and now Pope Francis acting as ‘our’ spokesmen on global concerns for peace and conservation makes it is easier to present a convincing case for a ‘pope for all Christians’ and a ‘genuinely ecumenical council’.

The theme of the relationship between one and many, translated into the realm of ecclesiology, encompasses a broad spectrum of ques- tions, including the issue of the catholicity of the Church, the question of church unity, issue of primacy and collegiality, the relationship of one and many Churches, etc. As such, this question not only represents an intra-Orthodox concern but also stands as one of the greatest con- temporary challenges in ecumenical dialogue. In order to grasp the es- sence of this issue, it is useful to get an insight into Metropolitan John Zizioulas’ theological perspectives on the link between one and many. This study initially investigates the philosophical elements of this prob- lem, with further discussion on its theological and ecclesiological con- sequences, in accordance with the Metropolitan method. It is notable that the Metropolitan bases his views on the principle of Trinitarian theology and Christology linked to Pneumatology, a connection fur- ther affirmed by the Eucharistic nature of ecclesiology. Thus, the Eucha- rist becomes the hermeneutical key for comprehending this question. Starting from these foundations, the metropolitan, in understanding the relationship between one and many, comes to talk about the catho- licity of the Church, as well as about the relationship between primacy and collegiality, church unity, etc. Finally, the manifestation of unity in God hic et nunc will be highlighted as the main reason for the Met- ropolitan’s insistence on examining this question through the prism of Eucharistic ecclesiology.

Streszczenie:
Subject of the article’s study – ecumenism of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi and reflection of this phenomenon in the works of scientists and modern Ukrainian media. Main objective of the study: analyze what Ukrainian scientists, journalists and different media are writing about Sheptytkyi’s ecumenism. Methodology: We used a bibliographic method to accumulate factual material, a qualitative content analysis to isolate the ideas of ecumenism from the journalism of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi, a cultural-historical method that made it possible to consider the ideas of ecumenism in the context of the era, the connection with the historical context, as well as methods of synthesis and generalization, induction and deduction. The study process description: In our scientific article, we analyzed the doctoral dissertation of His Beatitude Lubomyr Huzar entitled «Andrei Sheptytskyi, Metropolitan of Halytskyi (1901-1944). Herald of ecumenism». His Beatitude Lubomyr defended this fundamental work at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome back in 1972. Therefore, we observed how this work reflects the historical prerequisites, features and development of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism, who, according to His Beatitude Lubomir, was a kind of innovator in this field, a person who was ahead of his time. We also analyzed the reflections on the ecumenism of Sheptytskyi´s father, doctor Ivan Datsk, which are reflected in his book «In Search of Faithfulness and Truth». In addition, we turned to the scientific text «Ecumenism of Sheptytskyi» by professors Mykola Vegesh and Mykola Palinchak. Subsequently, it was analyzed how the scientific work became a useful basis for the coverage of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism in the press. In particular, in the columns of the cultural and social site «Zbruch» in Diana Motruk’s article «In Search of Church Unity». We also turned to the «Spiritual Greatness of Lviv» website, where in 2020 an interview with Mykhailo Perun, who shot the film «Sheptytskyi: Relevant information», was published, illustrating the ecumenical initiatives of this figure. In addition, we analyzed the publication on Radio Svoboda for 2022, dedicated to the anniversary of Sheptytsky’s stepping into eternity. It is also mentioned there about of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism as his landmark activity. Subsequently, we found an article on the website «Christian and the World», where in a conversation with the scientist Dr. Andrii Sorokovskyi entitled «Andrei Sheptytskyi believed that the union is a synthesis, communion and dialogue between the East and the West, – Andrii Sorokovskyi» also analyzed the phenomenon of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism. Results: we discovered that Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism was studied not only by numerous scientists, but this meaningful legacy of his is a valuable phenomenon for media coverage. Therefore, Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism becomes the subject of interest of journalists not only of publications that write mainly on church topics, but also socio-political and artistic ones. We are sure that Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism will continue to be studied by professional scientists and representatives of the wider media community. Significance: journalism of a religious orientation, high-quality and substantiated coverage of religious processes and phenomena in the press is still something quite new for modern Ukraine. In Soviet times, journalists were afraid to write about religion in order not to incur the wrath of the authorities, so such materials could not be included in the press. That is why it is very important to study how today’s journalists cover important issues of religion, which, in addition, have a strong scientific basis. In addition, the development of ecumenism and religious unity are extremely important for building national unity, which is necessary for our state to effectively confront the enemy in full-scale war. Key words: ecumenism; Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi; media; interreleigion cooperation; dialogue.
