Streszczenie:
Abstract. The aim of this paper is to quantitatively characterize the climatology of daily precipitation indices in Catalonia (northeastern Iberian Peninsula) from 1951 to 2003. This work has been performed analyzing a subset of the ETCCDI (Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices) precipitation indices calculated from a new interpolated dataset of daily precipitation, namely SPAIN02, regular at 0.2° horizontal resolution (around 20 km) and from two high-quality stations: the Ebro and Fabra observatories. Using a jack-knife technique, we have found that the sampling error of the SPAIN02 regional averaged is relatively low. The trend analysis has been implemented using a Circular Block Bootstrap procedure applicable to non-normal distributions and autocorrelated series. A running trend analysis has been applied to analyze the trend persistence. No general trends at a regional scale are observed, considering the annual or the seasonal regional averaged series of all the indices for all the time windows considered. Only the consecutive dry days index (CDD) at annual scale shows a locally coherent spatial trend pattern; around 30% of the Catalonia area has experienced an increase of around 2–3 days decade−1. The Ebro and Fabra observatories show a similar CDD trend, mainly due to the summer contribution. Besides this, a significant decrease in total precipitation (around −10 mm decade−1) and in the index "highest precipitation amount in five-day period" (RX5DAY, around −5 mm decade−1), have been found in summer for the Ebro observatory.

Streszczenie:
The oblique ionograms automatic scaling algorithm (OIASA), developed at the INGV for the identification of trace of oblique ionograms, allows the determination of the maximum usable frequency (MUF) for communication between the transmitter and receiver, automatically rejecting poor quality ionograms. A test of the algorithm using data from a campaign of oblique soundings between Dourbes (50.1°N, 4.6°E) and Roquetes (40.8°N, 0.5°E) has been performed. Oblique soundings from three different campaigns have been studied, covering different geomagnetic conditions, in order to study the behavior of the autoscaling algorithm under quiet and perturbed geomagnetic periods. The reported results demonstrate that OIASA performance is not influenced by geomagnetic or ionospheric activity conditions. This demonstrates a satisfactory performance of the automatic scaling algorithm, even under different geomagnetic conditions, the potential application of OIASA as a near-real-time tool for ionospheric monitoring purposes, and its performance for tracking ionospheric effects caused by space weather events.

Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT The heliophysics catalogues published by the Ebro Observatory during 1910–1937 have been converted into a digital format in order to provide the data for computational processing. This has allowed us to study in detail the North–South (N–S) asymmetry of solar activity in that period, focusing on two different structures located at two different layers of the solar atmosphere: sunspots (Photosphere) and solar plages (Chromosphere). The examination of the absolute and normalized N–S asymmetry indices in terms of their monthly sum of occurrences and areas has made possible to find out a cyclic behaviour in the solar activity, in which the preferred hemisphere changes systematically with a global period of $7.9 \pm 0.2\ \mathrm{yr}$. In order to verify and quantify accurately this periodicity and study its prevalence in time, we employed the Royal Greenwich Observatory-United States Air Force/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sunspot data series during 1874–2016. Then, we examined each absolute asymmetry index time series through different techniques as the power-spectrum analysis, the Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition With Adaptive Noise algorithm or the Morlet wavelet transform. The combined results reveal a cyclic behaviour at different time-scales, consisting in two quite stable periodicities of $1.47 \pm 0.02\ \mathrm{yr}$ and $3.83 \pm 0.06\ \mathrm{yr}$, which co-exist with another three discontinuous components with more marked time-varying periods with means of $5.4 \pm 0.2\ \mathrm{yr}$, $9.0 \pm 0.2\ \mathrm{yr}$, and $12.7 \pm 0.3\ \mathrm{yr}$. Moreover, during 1910–1937, only two dominant signals with averaged periods of $4.10 \pm 0.04\ \mathrm{yr}$ and $7.57 \pm 0.03\ \mathrm{yr}$ can be clearly observed. Finally, in both signals, periods are slightly longer for plages in comparison with sunspots.

Streszczenie:
As in other countries, the public in Argentina became aware of the existence of something called “the theory of relativity” only after November 1919. Although the news of Arthur Eddington's eclipse expedition, which provided the first confirmation of Einstein's theory, was poorly reported in the newspapers, by the end of 1920 Einstein had become a household name for the educated middle class of Buenos Aires, the capital city of the country. This was in great measure the result of the activity of a few enthusiastic lecturers. Significantly, none of them belonged to the prestigious Institute of Physics of the University of La Plata, which during the decade of the 1910s was considered the most important center of physical research in Latin America. Between July and August 1920 the Spanish physicist Blas Cabrera – perhaps the greatest popularizer of Einstein's theory in Spain – visited Argentina and talked about relativity. In September Georges Duclout, a French engineer who had graduated from the Zurich Polytechnic and by then was professor of applied mechanics at the School of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (FCEFyN) of the University of Buenos Aires, also gave a series of conferences on the subject. That same month José Ubach, a Jesuit astronomer trained at the Ebro Observatory in Spain, and established in Buenos Aires, lectured on relativity at the Colegio del Salvador.

Streszczenie:
This work proposes a new indirect method to detect the impact of solar flares on ionospheric sounding measurements, i.e., on the signal-to-noise ratio of ionospheric reflected radio signals. The method allows us to detect and characterize the ionospheric absorption of high-frequency radio waves as a product of these energetic events. The detection is based on the estimation of the quiet conditions signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) pattern of the month and the subsequent comparison of this pattern with the SNR for the analyzed day. The method has been tested by using data from Ebro Observatory ionospheric station (DPS4D, EB040), but it can be applied to any other ionospheric station. At EB040, it can provide observational data to the international Service of Rapid Magnetic Variations (SRMV) to help confirm Sfe (Solar Flare Effects). To set up the method, we considered a data set of 262 solar flares that occurred during 2011–2014 and were observed during daylight hours at EB040 (17 X-class, 124 M-class, and 121 C-class). This led to impose a threshold of −20 dB in the SNR for at least four consecutive frequencies to confirm that a solar flare took place. The method is particularly sensitive for the detection of X-class solar flares, performs quite well with M-class events, and is even able to detect some C-class flares with high solar altitude angles. Furthermore, we studied some constraints that affect the detection of solar flares from the analysis of GOES-15 hard X-ray flux data about the considered events. For each flare, we computed its solar altitude angle at the time of the ionospheric sounding to get an estimation of its geoeffective irradiance, which had an effect on the local ionosphere. We can confirm that the method of detection is more effective with flares that present a solar elevation angle higher than 18.94°, a geoeffective hard X-ray irradiance above 3.30 × 10−6 W/m2, and a geoeffective hard X-ray radiant exposure higher than 1.61 × 10−3 J/m2, computed during the 5 min preceding the ionospheric sounding.
