Streszczenie:
In the 1920s and 1930s, the Japanese proletarian literary movement had an enormous impact on East Asian writers, who often translated and adapted Japanese tales. Amongst them, Hayama Yoshiki’s 1925 short story “Inbaifu” (The Prostitute) enjoyed great popularity. This paper focuses on the Taiwanese writer Lang-shi-sheng’s adaptation of “Inbaifu”, the 1935 “Yami” (Darkness), and Manchukuo writer Yuan Xi’s adaptation of the same Japanese source text, the 1938 short story “Shi tian” (Ten Days). By comparing the Taiwanese and Manchukuo stories, this paper suggests that both versions of “Inbaifu” reflect the Japanese debate on proletarian literature that was fashionable in East Asia in the 1930s. However, by resetting the stories in Taiwan and Manchukuo, respectively, the authors created cultural products that defy borders and simple nationalist interpretations.

In this essay, I want to analyze how maternal instinct is depicted in one short story which has South East Asia as a setting of place because this maternal instinct has became one of the most debatable issues in feminist study until nowadays. The main data is a short story entitled Broken. This short story was included in anthology of Asian short stories entitled A Rainbow Feast. One thing which becomes uniqueness in Broken that picks my interest is how this novel exploits woman acts and habits in different way than any other novel. VerenaTay through this novel tells a story about one particular woman and how she treats her newborn baby. Different with other novel, Broken pictures the woman who lives in different world than us, a human. It is interesting to see how VrenaTay pictures that woman acts and somehow lives after she was dead, how a woman escapes from subversive condition and move toward dominant one by leap through the limit of life and death.

Asia has never been free from issues of oppression, marginalization, and exploitation in terms of race, politics, economy, gender, etc. that Westerners have inflicted on Easterners. In the twenty-first century, this perspective has expanded to human power over nature. The issue of natural destruction in recent decades is the result of human exploitation of nature involves power relations and marginalization of the oppressed in the concept of colonialism. The destruction of nature, natural exploitation, and marginalization of the oppressed in the Asian context is shown in three Indonesian short stories entitled Pekik Burung Kedasi di Tepi Kahayan (Crying Cuckoos over the Kahayan), Cenning Rara, and Pohon Pongo (Pongo’s Caring Tree). The purpose of this paper is to break the European perception of Asia that the East is a backward region with uncultured people who are unable to lead themselves in world-saving issues. This study uses library research. Through the ecocritical postcolonial approach, the results state that (1) the European perspective on Asia as uncultured, uneducated, and unable to voice their thoughts is misleading, (2) Asians have a strong relationship with nature and can be aligned with Europe to build the world through saving nature.

The liberation of India from British domination in 1947 was the most significant historical event in the South Asian history. Despite the fact that freedom promised only liberty, equality, and fraternity, the only result was widespread violence, which eventually led to British-India being divided into two sovereign dominions (India and Pakistan). This Partition resulted in the loss of houses, properties, friends, relatives, and, most importantly, identity. The purpose of this paper is to look at how Jhumpa Lahiri addresses diasporic concerns, unpleasant partition experiences, and fractured cultural identity in two of her short- stories, “When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” and “A Real Durwan”, from her collection, Interpreter of Maladies. Lahiri, an Indian immigrant from the United Kingdom, is well aware of the difficulties that immigrants experience in their host country. She has brilliantly depicted the painful consequences of partition in the works described above, especially the bloodshed that occurs during the civil war between East and West Pakistan. The goal of this article is to examine how Lahiri uses these two short stories to emphasize the deceiving features of freedom. Green University Review of Social Sciences Dec 2021; 7(1-2): 105-111

Abstract Zakariyyā Tāmir (b. 1931) is generally considered to be one of the most innovative authors in contemporary Arabic literature. One characteristic of his short stories is that they take up and retell the historical and literary traditions of the Middle East in a variety of ways: in his texts Tāmir works − and plays − with subjects, literary models, conventions, lore, and popular folk fictions. It is this work with and on tradition which this study explores by analysing Tāmirs use of historical and literary figures that are part of the cultural heritage. The study argues that the grotesque is the aesthetic category through which Tāmir narrates tradition. This grotesque, distorting, use of the cultural heritage serves a satirical purpose − the stories are a violent critique of the modern Arabic world −, but, moreover, the stories forge by this means a new concept of tradition that subverts any kind of immovable, static and paternalistic concept of tradition.

Streszczenie:
Gender representation is significant in every country in South East Asia. In Myanmar, an Asian country, men and women have equal rights under Myanmar customary law, but there is still inequality in some situations. However, gender discrimination is not a prominent social feature; and awareness and understanding of this feature cannot be reached without a course to literary work, which is a reflection of Myanmar culture and Myanmar society. Therefore, to see how gender is represented in Myanmar society, short stories which reflect Myanmar real culture are chosen to be analyzed in this study. That is why, speech acts and some specific linguistic features are investigated and analyzed on the topic of how men and women are represented and portrayed in Myanmar short stories. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are conducted for analyzing the data; descriptive statistical analysis is used for quantitative method and sociolinguistic explanation is presented for qualitative method. Through speech act theory, it is found that there is no difference between males and females in using directives and assertive speech acts. In terms of linguistic features, it is found that reporting verbs, adverbs and adjectives used to portray male characters are described negatively rather than the features used for portraying the female characters. This seems to suggest that males have more negative images than females. Moreover, that the subjects of sentences in the data refer to males more than females is likely to imply that males are leaders and females followers in Myanmar society.

n the recent years, several Bulgarian cinematic works have put into the space frame some kind of new artistic enactment with many different and even unrecognised identities, along with their visible stereotypes, patterns and models of representation: the well-known Bulgarian identity starts dialogising through screen with Far East (in general plan) cultures and unfamiliar Asian characters. This is definitely something absolutely new to the national cinema, i.e. to realize original themes and stories on the Bulgarian-Asian axis, to introduce totally unused, even attractive personages, often even in an absolutely non-Bulgarian cultural environment. In fact, these films are exactly in these two directions: the first variant of realisation explores the confrontation between the Bulgarian and the Asian identities in the context of our contemporary and post-totalitarian reality. The second variant of realization is the unprecedented deep immersion in the distant Asian territories with other aesthetic conventions, where the worldviews and behaviours are far from the European and Western values, and of course, in their compendium generate other, supranational and categorically universal meanings and messages. The proposed paper analyses the second cinematic trend, where the young Bulgarian female director Yana Lekarska works. The research focus is totally on her shorts, filmed in the Republic of Korea – the feature films Bridge (2016), November will be May (2017), Here and Now (2018) and the documentary Nam nam buk nyeo (2016). Yana Lekarska's entire work in terms of worldview and architectonics is much more Korean in style, than representative of the typical Bulgarian cinema.

Streszczenie:
Metaperipatus inae sp. nov. (Onychophora: Peripatopsidae) from Chile is described and compared with the previously monotypic M. blainvillei by light, fluorescence, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The new species is distinguished from M. blainvillei by having (1) fixed number of legs in both sexes, (2) a characteristic color pattern of the integument, and (3) a larger body size. The structure of the ovaries in both species is different from that in other onychophorans. In contrast to other species of Peripatopsidae and South-East Asian Peripatidae, stalked oocytes are lacking. In addition, the absence of a germinal epithelium surrounding a central lumen contrasts with the organization of ovaries in the Neotropical Peripatidae. A distinct separation into a sterile and a fertile ovarian portion suggests that the novel type might be derived from an ovary with stalked oocytes characteristic of the Peripatopsidae and South-East Asian Peripatidae. The seminal receptacles in both members of Metaperipatus are small and either non-functional or short-term stores since they contained no sperm in the investigated females. The mode of sperm transfer is by dermal insemination, with spermatophores deposited on the female’s body. Based on these observations, the evolutionary development of the ovaries and reproductive strategies in Onychophora are discussed. In addition, an identification key of onychophorans from Chile is provided.

Streszczenie:
Don Lee reworked his eight magazine stories to varying degrees, arranged the sequence of the stories in a specific order, and published a short-story cycle in 2001. Significantly, the writer changed the ethnic identity of some characters from white American to Asian American. He also added and highlighted Asian American themes and issues. In short, Lee made an “Asian American” short-story cycle par excellence by coloring his stories yellow. This essay examines Lee's rewriting and arrangement of his magazine stories for an Asian American short-story cycle. It first compares the differences between the magazine and cycle versions of the stories. It goes on to examine totalizing devices such as the common setting, recurrent places, connective characters, and unifying themes. Lastly, it elucidates the arrangement of the eight stories and significance of the title story in the cycle. It ultimately argues that Don Lee retrofitted his magazine stories extensively and meticulously for a short-story cycle in order to portray the diverse aspects of post-immigrant Asian America at the turn of the century from his positionality as a third-generation Korean American.

Using data from ionosondes, located in East Asia, and total electron content maps, we have made a comparative analysis of ionospheric disturbances associated with the intense geomagnetic storms of December 14–16, 2006 and December 19–22, 2015. These storms had almost equal peak intensities (Dstmin=–162 and –155 nT), but different durations of the main phases (2.5 and 19 hr). At the beginning of both the storms, the region under study was located in the vicinity of the midnight meridian. Ionospheric responses to magnetic storms differed in: i) an increase in the F2-layer critical frequency at subauroral latitudes, caused by an increase in auroral precipitation, during the initial phase of the former storm and the absence of this effect in the latter; (ii) a sharp drop in the critical frequency in the evening hours of the main phase of the latter storm, caused by a shift of the main ionospheric trough to lower latitudes, and the absence of this effect during the former storm; (iii) generation of a short-term positive disturbance observed at subauroral latitudes only in the early recovery phase of the former storm after the negative ionospheric disturbance. During both the storms at middle latitudes there were positive disturbances and wave-like fluctuations of the critical frequency which increased in the vicinity of the dawn meridian. The main causes of the differences between the ionospheric storms are shown to be the differences between the initial conditions of the magnetosphere–ionosphere system and durations of the main phases of magnetic storms.

In this study, the theory of sense phenomenology was applied to short stories, namely M. Navin’s Tamil short story collections. The first and second objectives of this research are also to identify and analyse the feeling of grief represented in M. Navin’s short stories. Researchers used Sohaimi Abdul Aziz’s theory of sense phenomenology, which he developed in 1998. Sohaimi Abdul Aziz combined two theories from west and east. Sohaimi combined the theory of sense from the east and the theory of phenomenology from the west which then emergence into sense phenomenology theory. Researches used a descriptive qualitative design to analyse the short stories. The researcher involved the method of text analysis and literature review in this study. The researcher used three collection of M. Navin’s short stories published in year 2015, 2018 and 2020 which titled ‘Mandai Oodi’, ‘Boyak’ and ‘Uchai’. The researcher focused on 25 short stories, to assess M. Navin wring work. The three short stories by M. Navin, show that theory of sense phenomenology is suitable and can express the feeling of characters in the short stories.

In teaching Southeast Asian literature in English in Thailand, a lecturer presented a brief historical background of each country. After lecturing on each country’s literature background, the students were assigned to write the reflection essays on short stories studied in class. Then, a lecturer summarized the issues discussed in class and from students’ reflection essays. This article is resulted from the case study of teaching modern Southeast Asian Literary Works in English at IAC international studies ASEAN-CHINA program, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat university, Thailand. A lecturer and students discovered gender and political issues in Laotian, Burmese and Vietnamese short stories. Laotian and Vietnamese short stories A Bar at the Edge of Cemetery and The Khaki Coat represent writers’ attitudes towards their communist/socialist government. Laos and Vietnam share social problems such as poverty-famine, economic inequality and class struggle. Additionally, Laotian, Burmese and Vietnamese short stories also portray gender issues such as gender inequality, women’s liberation movements, and the effects of war on women.

This paper reports the results of an empirical analysis of the linkage between the financial markets (foreign-exchange, stock, and bond markets) of Korea and the financial markets of the United States, Japan, and six major East Asian countries. A multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) model is used to analyze 23 financial variables and identify time-varying correlation coefficients. A comparison of these values before and after the currency crisis yields four main conclusions. First, the interest rates in the major Asian countries, including Korea, are moving independently of one another. Second, the correlations between the Korean financial variables are higher after the crisis than before it, and the highest correlation is between the won/dollar exchange rate and the stock price index. The high linkage between the won/dollar exchange rate and stock price index signifies that short-term foreign investment flow influences the won/dollar exchange rate and the stock price index equally. Third, the impact of U.S. stock prices on Korean stock prices has increased by more than 20 times since the currency crisis, indicating a synchronization of the Korean stock market and the U.S. stock market. Fourth, the linkage between the stock market prices of Korea and those of Japan and several East Asian countries has been increasing since the currency crisis, whereas the Korean—U.S. stock market linkage has become somewhat less significant.

‘Econophoria’ is the hope that the solution of all governance challenges, whether international or domestic, can be sought through economic growth and development. It is prevalent in the East Asian region, where tremendous economic development success stories have gone hand-in-hand with lengthy periods without interstate war. This paper explores the theoretical underpinnings and antecedents for econophoria, and how it has manifest in practice in East Asia. It also raises, however, a number of questions which challenge the underlying assumptions of peace though trade and economic growth paradigms in East Asia. How does the skewed wealth distribution that is associated with macro-economic growth affect the internal stability and peace of the societies in East Asia? Does this have an impact on the propensity of the governments to contain the conflicts they have with their neighbours at a level of low tension? Is the pursuit of economic growth prior to, or at the expense of, human rights and the wellbeing of the most vulnerable sustainable in the contemporary international operating environment?

To address the supervisees' unique acculturation experiences, a supervisor must provide culturally responsive supervision where the supervisees can critically examine the influence of cultural experiences on self-of-the-therapist. The authors used autoethnography as the methodology to present their supervision stories, which include challenging clinical examples and collective reflections, to highlight unique issues they encountered in the United States. Clinical implications are provided to develop effective and culturally responsive supervision.

Literary writers in Africa have used different genres of art to reflect and critique actions in the society at different points of history. Apart from entertaining and preserving culture, works of art have a role in creating awareness among the audience and proposing action in the society. The pre-colonial, colonial and pre-millennium texts have received significant literary attention with reference to their concerns. Most studies in Africa for example tend to focus on canonical writers and their contributions to the political and economic developments in the society. However, many post millennial short stories have received minimal critical attention. This paper, therefore, examines the socio-cultural and economic resurgence in selected post millennium short stories in East Africa in order to find out the kind of society that upcoming writers are yearning for, thus revealing the major concerns of short stories written in the 21st century. Post-colonial theory guides the analysis done in this paper and helps in demonstrating how the Millennium Development Goals influenced the thematic concerns in the five (5) short stories under discussion, which are all written by emerging post-millennial writers. The paper argues that 21st Century writers are sensitive to issues affecting their society and they, in the process of writing, attempt to propose ways of societal transformation through literature. The paper gives variety and contributes to the existing reservoir of literary analysis in East Africa.

This paper explores the discourse on womanhood in the Asian context by delving into the narratives of women characters in five short stories by three Asian writers. Specifically, it attempted to determine the images associated with Asian women based on the portrayal of the main protagonists in the selected short stories. It then analysed how these images construct womanhood and perpetuate such ideal in the Asian mindset. Viewed from both formalist and constructionist lenses, findings show that the women protagonists are relegated to their three-pronged traditional roles/images: daughter, wife, and mother. These images, in turn, shape how these characters behave and are seen by other characters - submissive, self-sacrificing and subjugated. However, despite an unrelentingly difficult life, all the five women still struggle to survive. Such act seems inconsistent with the above stereotypical construct of womanhood, though a closer look actually shows a different side to the said construct: strong, steadfast and resilient/survivalist. Not all of the protagonists overcome their tragic lives. Nonetheless, all five women manage to convey that the concept of womanhood is more complex than how it had been perceived in the past. This complexity is clearly illustrated in the lived realities of many Asian women today.

The waiting woman is a ghost who appears to be endlessly waiting – for recognition, for her lover, for a chance to reincarnate, or to exact revenge. In Asia, her roots can be found in early medieval Chinese records of the strange, arguably the oldest written ghost stories in the region. The romanticized version of this ghost, introduced in Tang Xianzu's drama Peony Pavillion ( Mudan ting, 1598), influenced many writers of Japanese kaidan (strange) stories and merged with East and Southeast Asian ghostlore that continues to inspire contemporary local fiction and films. The article proposes to read the figure of the waiting woman as a representation of the enduring myth of the submissive Asian femininity and a warning against the threat of possible female emancipation brought about by the socio-economic changes caused by modernisation.

Beyond the binary of nostalgia and assimilation, Vietnamese diasporic identity emerges in these narratives as the tenuous subject of physical and psychic trauma. Informed by postcolonial theories of diasporic identity, Asian American scholarship on racial abjection, and psychoanalytic and feminist analyses of trauma and sexual deviance, I argue that the characters in these stories either succumb to or subvert the unwitting repetition of trauma in their attempts to challenge, if only precariously, patterns of domination through sadomasochism and counternationalist historiography.

AbstractDespite their long history in the United States, relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to Asian Americans and their lived experience in sports. The purpose of this study was to give voices to Asian American men by focusing on their experiences in sports. In particular, this study examined the experiences of East Asian and Southeast Asian American male college students who were often perceived as “foreign” and “pejoratively feminine” racialized minority yet participated in sports that were associated with dominant masculinity in the U.S. The setting of the study was as a predominately White institution located in Upstate New York where Asian Americans make up about one percent of the total student population. Qualitative research method was employed for the study. Six Asian American male students were recruited through snowball and purposeful sampling methods. In-depth interviews were conducted to reveal the rich stories of these Asian American men. The research showed that the stories of Asian American male college students were much nuanced and complicated. Specifically, this study revealed that Asian American men were constantly otherized as “forever foreigners” who did not have a legitimate citizenship in the United States. Also, Asian Americans faced unique ideas about their manhood that either highlighted emasculated and feminized masculinity or hyper-masculinity. In dealing with these situations, Asian American men employed unique cultural strategies to challenge and resist racial stereotypes through sports.

Taking three translated short stories with specific focus on “home,” namely Syed Waliullah’s “The Tale of a Tulsi Plant,” Abu Rushd’s “The Bone” and Ashraf Siddiqui’s “A House with a Pond” from Niaz Zaman’s edited book, The Escape and Other Stories of 1947 (2000), this paper will attempt to bring to light both the erasure and the enduring memory of the 1947 Partition of Bengal. We interpret “home” as a symbol of uprooting and enrooting for people crossing from the West to East Bengal within a volatile world of insecurity, loss and fear. While the stories do not directly engage with the grand and populist discourses of the 1947 riots, they represent an uncanny world-in-transition for Muslims trying to cross into East Bengal/East Pakistan to start a new life. We analyse the stories’ indissoluble relation between materiality and memory, necessary for the identity of the region’s collective posterity. In doing so, we employ Ananya Jahanara Kabir’s terms such as “postmemory” and “post-amnesia” to argue that the essay is our attempt to reclaim the literary memories of 1947, which shape the intergenerational identities of Bangladeshis.

A number of recommendations are made, including the setting up of a regional organization to coordinate a multilateral version of the Chiang Mai Initiative and further development of the regional currency and bond markets to increase the private sector's access to long-term financing. Given the region's huge holding of foreign reserves, the paper also recommends a much more proactive approach in managing these reserves in order to influence global financial developments.

Myths and legends are representative of the unique cultural aspects of ethnic communities and, thus, fruitful resources of meaningful stories that can attract tourists and simultaneously convey meaning to their experiences. This study aims to increase understanding of the attractiveness of mythology-based tourism products among East Asian target markets. The aim is to examine how interested Chinese, Japanese and Koreans are in products that are based on stories and themes of Finnish mythology, as represented in the Finnish national epic Kalevala. Thematic interviews were conducted among Chinese, Japanese and Koreans living in Finland. In the interviews two stories from Kalevala (the stories of Aino and Sampo) were utilized along with three themes strongly linked to Kalevala: nature, sauna and bear. The findings indicate that Kalevala and Finnish mythology are not familiar enough in the Asian target markets to be a significant pull factor itself for the tourists. However, the interest in the stories and mythical content shows that they can be used as elements that add value to tourism products. The findings also show differences in what the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans value and pay attention to. The findings provide customer insight for tourism product development in the target markets. Attention should be paid to how the stories and mythical themes are integrated into tourism products. Highlighting the linkages of Kalevala to the cultures of the target markets could also make it more appealing and easier to understand.

The Asian values debate has been long on speculative advocacy but short on empirical validation, with statistical tests emerging only lately. This study explores two questions: whether Asians indeed hold distinct cultural attitudes when compared with non-Asians and whether these cultural attitudes and beliefs identified as Asian values form coherent dimensions among Asians. The study first identifies four dimensions of Asian values based on a review of various Asian values discourses: familism, communalism, authority orientations, and work ethic. The findings from the empirical analysis based on multilevel models and factor analysis return mixed support for the Asian values hypothesis. Although East Asian respondents do exhibit strong work-related values compared with those from other regions, commitment to familial values and authoritarian orientations are actually lower among East Asians. Also, while preference for strong leadership and parental duty do turn out to form distinct sets of attitudes among South and Southeast Asians, the four dimensions do not constitute a clear value complex in the minds of East Asians.

This study analyzed volatility comovement and contagion in the stock markets of four countries (China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan) in East Asia, which are closely connected with each other geographically and economically in terms of short-term and long-term perspectives. The volatility of stock returns has complex properties of not only volatility clustering, but also long memory, regime change, and substantial outliers. This study reviewed the volatility comovement and contagion in a stock market from long-term and short-term perspectives with the Bivariate Markov Switching Multifractal (BMSM) volatility model that is known for explaining such characteristics well, in spite of using small number of parameters. The empirical analysis results are as follows: China has no significant correlation with the other three countries. Therefore, China stock market is regarded as isolated or segmented market. The influence of the financial crisis on East Asian countries varies depending on the country. Regardless of the starting point of the crisis, Korea and Taiwan are shown to be vulnerable to external impact, compared to China and Japan. From the perspective of the nature of crisis, financial crisis that occurred in 1997 in East Asia and South Europe in 2011 were identified as local shocks as they had an impact on only a few countries, while the global crisis in 2008 was identified as global shock because it caused significant short-term and/or mid and long-term volatility of all countries.

Central characters in Divakaruni's narratives embody the sufferings of immigrants in the New Land. Precisely it was proposed to study the stories from the perspective of the diaspora. In this collection, the researcher has selected five stories, including "Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter," "The Intelligence of Wild Things," "The Blooming Season for Cacti," "The Names of Stars in Bengali," and "The Unknown Errors of Our Lives." Since the characters like Mrs. Dutta, Mira, Radhika, and Kahuku's mother emigrate from India to different zones of America, they combat issues of cultural contradiction, identity crisis, disruption and family strives. Unlike them, Tarun, Mrs. Dutta's son, and her family are assimilated into the American society, whereas the characters such as Mrs. Dutta, Didi, and Mira recurrently remember their original house and early childhood days with friends. It is because they are fragmented and frustrated in America. The study concluded that the characters in her stories are ambitious and want to live a luxurious life but because of the lack of opportunities, they could not fulfill their desires and even some of them decided to return to their homeland to get a better life.

The rapid rise of East Asian economy has aroused the reflection on Confucianism in the academic community and the reassessment of the value of the “East Asian Confucian Cultural Circle”. Throughout the economic modernization process of developed countries, it can be found that the construction of any social system must be based on its traditional culture, and the choices made by organizations should also be regulated by cultural values. Without the ethical order, economic modernization would be short of the support and participation of spiritual power, and thus would be difficult to achieve the economic modernization goal of continuing social progress. Starting from the cultural reflection on the motivation of the development of economic modernization in East Asia, this paper summarizes the concept of East Asian Confucian Cultural Circle, and dialectically analyzes the profound and complex relationship between Confucianism and economic modernization in East Asia.

AbstractThe East Asian summer monsoon is unique among summer monsoon systems in its complex seasonality, exhibiting distinct intraseasonal stages. Previous studies have alluded to the downstream influence of the westerlies flowing around the Tibetan Plateau as key to its existence. We explore this hypothesis using an atmospheric general circulation model that simulates the intraseasonal stages with fidelity. Without a Tibetan Plateau, East Asia exhibits only one primary convective stage typical of other monsoons. As the plateau is introduced, the distinct rainfall stages—spring, pre-mei-yu, mei-yu, and midsummer—emerge, and rainfall becomes more intense overall. This emergence coincides with a pronounced modulation of the westerlies around the plateau and extratropical northerlies penetrating northeastern China. The northerlies meridionally constrain the moist southerly flow originating from the tropics, leading to a band of lower-tropospheric convergence and humidity front that produces the rainband. The northward migration of the westerlies away from the northern edge of the plateau leads to a weakening of the extratropical northerlies, which, coupled with stronger monsoonal southerlies, leads to the northward migration of the rainband. When the peak westerlies migrate north of the plateau during the midsummer stage, the extratropical northerlies disappear, leaving only the monsoon low-level circulation that penetrates northeastern China; the rainband disappears, leaving isolated convective rainfall over northeastern China. In short, East Asian rainfall seasonality results from the interaction of two seasonally evolving circulations—the monsoonal southerlies that strengthen and extend northward, and the midlatitude northerlies that weaken and eventually disappear—as summer progresses.

This paper examines the dynamic dependence structure of crude oil and East Asian stock markets at multiple frequencies using wavelet and copulas. We also investigate risk management implications and diversification benefits of oil-stock portfolios by calculating and comparing risk and tail risk hedging performance. Our results provide strong evidence of time-varying dependence and asymmetric tail dependence between crude oil and East Asian stock markets at different frequencies. The level and fluctuation of their dependencies increase as time scale increases. Furthermore, we find the time-varying hedging benefits differ at investment horizons and reduced over the long run. Our results suggest that crude oil could be used as a hedge and safe haven against East Asian stock markets, especially in the short- and mid-term.

Urostylididae is a moderately species-rich family of phytophagous, mainly arboricolous pentatomoid true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) currently comprising 8 genera and 172 species (Rider et al. 2018). All described species occur in Asia, but undescribed taxa are present in Madagascar (P. Štys, pers. comm.). The present short paper was prompted by a recent contribution by Kim et al. (2018), who reviewed the species of the genus Urostylis Westwood, 1837, occurring in Korea, including the description of a purportedly new species, U. koreana Kim & Jung, 2018. The identity of the latter species is clarified below, with proposal of a new subjective synonymy.

Streszczenie:
The East Asian crisis occurred despite highly impressive macroeconomic performance and prudent fiscal policies pursued by the severely affected countries which enjoyed excellent international credit rating till June 1997. The crisis came as a rude shock to the international financial community and the policy-makers on account of its unprecedented magnitude and global impact. In this paper, Bakul Dholakia argues that the crisis resulted from a strong combination of mutually reinforcing factors such as appreciation of real exchange rates, high levels of current account deficit, extremely high growth of short-term external debt⁄ and highly fragile financial sector. According to Dholakia⁄ the overall impact of East Asian financial crisis on the Indian economy can be described as moderate. The slow-down of India's industrial growth and exports and fall in the stock market since the last quarter of 1997 can be attributed more to the climate of political uncertainty than the East Asian crisis. Given the favourable macroeconomic fundamentals⁄ Indian economy currently does not face any threat arising from the Asian virus.

Purpose – This paper aims to seek to find answers to three questions. First, is there any possibility of long-term cointegration between East and Southeast Asian equity markets? If so, how many cointegrating equations are there? Second, what are the short-term causal relationships between equity markets in East and Southeast Asia? Third, what is the East Asia’s most influential equity market toward their Southeast counterparts, and vice versa? Design/methodology/approach – This study uses Johansen's (1988) cointegration method to test long-run relationships among East and Southeast Asian equity markets. With regards to short-run causal relationships, this study uses Granger-causality test as well as the forecast variance decomposition method. Findings – Johansen test proves that there is cointegration between East and Southeast Asian equity markets, but the integration process is not complete. Cointegrating vector also provides evidence that member countries of ASEAN+3 respond differently to external shocks. With regards to short-run causal direction, this study finds that Japan Granger-causes all equity markets in Southeast Asia, while Singapore and Vietnam Granger-cause all equity markets in East Asia. These results imply that Japan is the market with most linkages in Southeast Asia, while Singapore and Vietnam are the markets with most linkages to East Asia. Furthermore, forecast variance decomposition reveals that Japan is the East Asia’s most influential equity markets, while Singapore is the most influential equity market in Southeast Asia. This study suggests that policymakers in East and Southeast Asian countries to synchronize the capital market standards and regulations as well as to reduce the barriers for capital mobility to spur the regional equity market integration. Research limitations/implications – Increasing integration of East and Southeast Asian capital markets forces policymakers in ASEAN+3 countries to synchronize monetary policies, as it has been found that regionally integrated capital markets reduce the degree of independent monetary policy (Logue et al., 1976). It is therefore important for policymakers in East and Southeast Asian countries to assess the possibility of stock market integration within this region to anticipate the future risks associated with economic integration as well as to build collective regional institutions (Wang, 2004). Click and Plummer (2005) also argued that integrated stock markets is more efficient than nationally segmented equity markets, and the efficiency of Asian capital markets has been questioned in particular after the 1997 Asian financial crises. Yet, the empirical evidence on the extent of financial integration among ASEAN+3 member countries has been limited and inconclusive. This study is therefore an attempt to investigate the recent development of ASEAN+3 equity markets integration. Practical implications – This study focuses its attention on the existence and the extent of financial integration in East and Southeast Asia region, and it provides evidence that equity market integration in ASEAN+3 is far from complete, and for that reason, there is a need for policymakers in ASEAN+3 member countries to synchronize their standards and regulations. Furthermore, the policymakers in East and Southeast Asia can gain benefit from this study, as it provides the evidence that ASEAN+3 member countries respond differently to policy shocks, which may hinder the development of regional financial integration as well as the policy effectiveness of region-wide authority in ASEAN+3. Originality/value – This research is different from previous studies, as it puts the regional financial integration within the context of ASEAN+3 frameworks. Unlike previous research that considers East and Southeast Asian countries as an individual entity, this research considers East and Southeast Asia into two different blocks, following Tourk (2004) who documented that negotiation process for ASEAN+3 financial integration is conducted in sub-regional level (ASEAN vs East Asia), rather than national level (country per country basis). Second, this study covers the period after the 1997 Asian financial crisis. As suggested in Wang (2014), that the degree of stock market integration tends to change around the periods marked by financial crises, the updated study on Asian financial integration in the aftermath of 1997 financial crises is important to document the development of regional financial integration.

Streszczenie:
Exports play a significant role in the economic catching-up transition in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The East Asian market has emerged for CEE’s exports not only because of its dynamic economy, but also because of the European debt crisis, the political tension between Ukraine and Russia, and the recent threat of terrorism. This study utilises panel ARDL models to estimate the long-run and short-run relationships between export instability and commodity concentration and geographic concentration. The datasets cover the 2004–2014 period for the trade of all the CEE countries with 10 East Asian marketplaces. The results of the causal relationships show significance in the long-run, but not in the short-run. This study suggests that the CEE export policy toward East Asia is likely to consider the impact of trade concentrations on export instability.
