The environmental problems related to the fossil energy is one of the energy issues causing great attention. Alternative energy sources becomes one of the important subject people are searching for. Solar cell, which converts light energy into electricity, is the most promising technology amongst the renewable energy. Dye-sensitized solar cell, DSSC, is considered as an alternative to the conventional solar cells due to its transparence, flexibility, high conversion efficiency, and low cost. Ruthenium complexes exhibit relatively high DSSC performance. However, ruthenium complexes did not efficiently absorb the photons in the Far-Red (FR)/Near-Infrared (NIR) region. To improve the performances of DSSCs, it would be essential to develop FR/NIR sensitizer. In this thesis, we designed and synthesized two new donor-π-conjugated-acceptor (D-π-A) unsymmetrical squaraine dyes, WCH-SQ10 and WCH-SQ11. These two squaraine dyes, have a triphenylamine as an electron donor, 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene as a conjugate moiety, and quinoline with COOH as an acceptor. WCH-SQ10 showed absorption maximum (λmax) centered at 686 nm with a molar absorption coefficient (ε) of 92376 M-1 cm-1 and λmax of WCH-SQ11 centerd at 673 nm with a ε of 87154 M-1 cm-1. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) are 122 nm and 120 nm for WCH-SQ10 and WCH-SQ11, respectively. The overall conversion efficiency (ŋ) for WCH-SQ10 was 1.77 % (Jsc = 9.25 mA/cm2,Voc = 374 mV,FF = 0.51), for WCH-SQ11 was 1.96 % (Jsc = 9.06 mA/cm2,Voc = 391 mV,FF = 0.55) under the illumination of AM (air mass) 1.5 global simulated sunlight (100 mW/cm2). Incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectra of the devices sensitized by WCH-SQ10 and WCH-SQ11, reveal the efficiency at wavelength from 800 nm to 1100 nm. The results suggest that squaraine dye is a promising FR/NIR sensitizer.

Global warming and depletion of fossil fuels have led to a great interesting in clean renewable energy sources. Amongst the new energy technologies, solar cell which utilizes the Sun as an energy source is one of the most promising technologies. Dye-sensitized solar cell, DSSC, is considered as an alternative to the conventional solar cell due to its transparence, flexibility, colorfulness, high conversion efficiency and low cost. Sensitizer is one of the key components for the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of DSSCs. Ruthenium complexes and organic dyes exhibit relatively high efficiency, however those photo-sensitizers did not absorb the photons in the Far-Red (FR) or Near-Infrared (NIR) region. To improve the performances of DSSCs, it would be essential to develop FR/NIR sensitizer. Squaraine dyes with attractively intrinsic absorption of the red-light photons and unusual high molar extinction coefficient were developed for the application in DSSCs. In this study we designed and synthesized several new donor-π conjugated- acceptor (D-π-A) unsymmetrical squaraine dyes, coded JYL-SQ1, JYL-SQ2, THL-SQ3, JYL-SQ5, JYL-SQ6 and JYL-SQ7, in which thiophene derivatives were incorporated to link the squaraine core and donor moiety. The fundamental physcicochemical properties of these squaraine dyes and the corresponding DSSCs devices based on them were well-studied. Understanding the relationship between the structure of the squaraine dyes, their physical properties and photovoltaic performance of the corresponding DSSCs devices may provide a new way for designing new high efficiency FR/NIR sensitizers.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have recently received great attention because of low production cost. Nature has proved that chlorophylls can be the best energy harvesters. In 2011, YD2-o-C8 co-sensitized with Y123 has achieved the PCE of 12.3%. We designed and synthesized the dyes (20)、(21)、(22) base on YD2-o-C8 to reduce dye aggregation and lower charge recombination, we have modified octyloxy group to 2-butyloctyloxy group. Owing to the deficiency of acetylenic link, the PCE of these modified dyes is lower than YD2-o-C8. In addition, the modified [A3B] asymmetric dyes (25) and (28) have a dip near 500 nm in the UV-vis absorption spectrum. To improve the light-harvesting efficiency, porphyrins were co-sensitized with perylene, which show strong absorption band in the 450~550 nm region. For organic dye, we synthesized a series of perylene-fused and perylene-anhydride dyes. In perylene-fused system, dye (47) with long alkyl chain exhibited an efficiency of 5.85%. In perylene-anhydride system, we modified and synthesized compound (56) with long alkyl donor chain based on P1. The compound (56) achieved an efficiency of 4.55%.

This work separated into two parts, both of them improved from the structure of black dye (N749). In part I, here reports a new series of panchromatic Ru(II) terpyridine sensitizers which possess thienyl functionalized isoquinoline pyrazolate chelates, along with tridentate terpyridine anchor and monodentate thiocyanate ligand. The 2-dodecylthienyl substituent was modified at various sites of isoquinoline moiety. These new sensitizers exhibit significantly higher molar extinction coefficients at 400-800 nm versus N749 reference complex, leading better light-harvesting capability across visible and near infrared region (NIR), giving a superior performance to DSC cells. In part II, A series of bis-tridentate and thiocyanate-free Ru(II) sensitizers with high stability were designed. Tridentate ligands were substituted for three thiocyanate ligands, which not only avoided thiocyanate linkage isomerism to increase the yield but also enhanced the lifespan of as-fabricated solar cell device. Different from previous extended-conjugation structure, here attached small alkyl groups to azolate chelates to reduce synthesis process and cost, leading to more opportunities for commercial application. Moreover, different alky-substituted tridentate chelates showed different device performance. At last, the stability test and synthesis cost analysis has been done.
