Streszczenie:
Abstract. The Flemish nation is a reality. Flanders has even become a state to some extent. Flanders no longer speaks French. French has been gradually ideologised from the language of prestige to the language of the enemy. Flanders has not chosen Flemish, but Dutch as its new language of prestige. There was no elite in Flanders speaking Flemish. Those who should have developed Standard Flemish in the 17th and 18th centuries, switched to French. After 1830, the Orangists put forward three major arguments to reject Flemish and to opt for Dutch. First, Flemish was not strong enough to compete with French. Second, Flemish was not good enough; it was corrupted by French, it was only a poor by-product of a Belgian nation-state that was dominated by French. Third, by opting for Dutch, the Flemings would link up with their history. In the second half of the 19th century, a process of dutchification gradually set in. As the importance of language as a social, economic and, therefore, political factor increased, the influence of Dutch grew stronger. Yet, there seem to be limits to the dutchification of Flemish society and, consequently, of the language of the Flemings. Even the most dedicated supporters of Pan-Netherlandic unity somehow reject the language of the Dutch as a model for Flanders.

Abstract The acquisition of [PART+AUX] and [AUX+PART] word order in Flanders. A descriptive, methodological and theoretical addition to Meyer & Weerman (2016)This paper presents new data on the acquisition of verb clusters in Flemish children. The data were collected by means of a sentence repetition task and the results are in line with the development path for verb clusters in Dutch children as proposed by Meyer & Weerman (2016). While Flemish children also show a development from more 2-1 orders in the youngest group to more 1-2 orders in the older group, this development seems to happen more slowly in Flemish children than in Dutch children. In spite of the fact that the results of both the Flemish and the Dutch study refute an analysis that takes the input adult language as the main factor in verb cluster formation in children, the Flemish data suggest that the higher frequency of 2-1 orders in the Flemish context could help to explain why 1-2 orders are acquired more slowly in Flemish children than Dutch children. In addition, this paper also discusses the results of a production test in Flanders that shows a high preference for 2-1 orders until the age of 7, thus questioning the type of linguistic skills that are assessed in a sentence repetition task.

Circulation of Dutch plays in Czech, 1898–1989 This article deals with the circulation of Dutch and Flemish dramatic texts in the Czech lands between 1898 – when the first translation of a Dutch theatre play was probably published – and 1989 – the year of the Velvet Revolution, after which the cultural field changed radically. It is a fact that relatively few Dutch and Flemish plays have been translated into Czech. The same is true of the actual production of the plays in Czech translation: these were rather sporadic throughout the whole 20th century, except for several plays by Herman Heijermans which were staged quite regularly in the first decades of the 20th century. This article surveys the different periods of the 20th century and provides an outline of the development of the Czech reception of Dutch and Flemish drama, including a dramatic mystification during the World War II.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The contemporary Dutch language belongs to European multi-centered languages and has three variations: Dutch of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch in Northern Belgium, and Dutch in Surinam. There are differences among the above variations which mainly regard the pronunciation and lexicon. The Flemish and Surinam variations pose a great challenge, especially for the translators of the Flemish and Surinam literature. Similarly, they pose also a significant theoretical and practical problem for the authors of one and two-language dictionaries of the Dutch language. The contemporary lexicography attempts to register the differences which one can find between the standard of the Dutch language and: its Northern Belgium variation, as well as its Surinam variation. It needs to be noted that lexicographers so far have been paying much attention to lexical differences between Dutch of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Dutch of the Northern Belgium. In this very paper there are described four printed Flemish-Dutch dictionaries and one online dictionary, we also characterize the Prisma Handwoordenboek Nederlands met onderscheid tussen het Belgisch-Nederlands en Nederlands-Nederlands met medewerking van W. Martin en W. Smedts.

Streszczenie:
Dutch is a language spoken by about 20 million people in the Netherlands and Belgium. This region is not only characterised by a complex dialect situation, but also by the use of two institutionalised varieties of the Standard language: Netherlandic Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands and is documented in Collins & Mees (1982), Mees & Collins (1983) and Gussenhoven (1999), while Belgian Dutch is spoken in the northern part of Belgium (Flanders) by approximately 6 million speakers. This variety is the same as what is commonly referred to internationally as ‘Flemish’. However, the term ‘Flemish’ is avoided here since it erroneously suggests that this language is different from the one spoken in the Netherlands: the lexical and syntactic differences between the two language varieties are very small. Nevertheless, there are significant phonetic differences as well as substantial regional variability within the two speech communities.

AbstractThis paper describes experiments in which I tried to distinguish between Flemish and Netherlandic Dutch subtitles, as originally proposed in the VarDial 2018 Dutch–Flemish Subtitle task. However, rather than using all data as a monolithic block, I divided them into two non-overlapping domains and then investigated how the relation between training and test domains influences the recognition quality. I show that the best estimate of the level of recognizability of the language varieties is derived when training on one domain and testing on another. Apart from the quantitative results, I also present a qualitative analysis, by investigating in detail the most distinguishing features in the various scenarios. Here too, it is with the out-of-domain recognition that some genuine differences between Flemish and Netherlandic Dutch can be found.

Streszczenie:
In Belgium and the Netherlands, most schools are state-funded, faith-based (mainly Roman Catholic and Protestant) schools, but today this majority of Christian schools is no longer in accordance with the religious view of many parents and students. This, in turn, can lead to a restriction of parental school choice. In this contribution, we will focus on the differences between the Flemish and the Dutch education systems and argue why, in spite of a comparative legal and financial framework, the Dutch educational system is, compared to the Flemish system, better able to guarantee this school choice. The main reasons for this claim are (1) the diversity between different faith-based schools in the Netherlands compared to a more or less mono-religious model in Flanders; (2) the diversity within faith-based schools in the Netherlands, compared to the centralized governance of most Flemish faith-based (Catholic) schools; and (3) the policy of including religious symbols in most Dutch schools, versus a policy of exclusion in most Flemish schools.

This study examines the framing of Syria fighters in Swedish newspapers during selected time periods of 2016 and 2017. Syria Fighters refer to individuals who travel to Syria to join the ongoing conflict, an occurrence commonly known as Foreign Fighters. Using framing analysis and framing theory the study finds that Syria fighters and their actions are framed mainly as problematic and as a negative social phenomenon. The study also makes a comparison to similar, previous research of Dutch and Flemish newspapers and finds clear similarities as well as differences.

Streszczenie:
This thesis considers the translation of Dutch and Flemish picture books into Swedish from 1995 to 2006. The main aim of the thesis is to study what meaning the notion translation takes on where picture books are concerned and how the translation practice for picture books is influenced by international co-productions. The thesis includes a bibliographical study and a larger case study of the Dutch picture book artist Dick Bruna and his internationally renowned picture books about the rabbit Miffy in Swedish translation. Working within the theoretical frame of descriptive translation studies (DTS), I describe and analyse picture book translation as a phenomenon and a practice that occurs at a certain moment in time in a certain sociocultural context. Using the model of Toury (1995), I study translation norms governing the selection and translation of Dutch and Flemish picture books and of Bruna’s picture books about Miffy in particular. Toury’s model is largely designed for the analysis of written texts. As picture book texts combine both verbal and visual modes of expression, I use multimodal analysis combining the social semiotic visual grammar of Kress & van Leeuwen (2006) with systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as a tool to analyse the translation of picture book texts. By combining DTS and SFL, I study translation as a cultural and social semiotic practice. The analyses in the thesis indicate that picture book translation can be characterised as an international, target culture-oriented and multimodal translation practice. The multimodal translation analysis shows that, while translated picture books have the same images as their source text due to co-production, images can be combined with different social meanings, as for instance images of children and interaction with the reader, expressed in the written text. Images can also assume different meaning potentials and also referential interplay and plausible reading paths between words and images can change.

In postdramatic theatre, as theorized by Hans-Thies Lehmann, theatricality, processuality andperformance art have merged. This overlapping was precisely at the heart of the so-called Flemish Wave, inthe 1980s. That generation drew links between the avant-garde's ideals and methods, and today's youngartists. The blurring of art and life overflows theatrical stages and frames, but thereby reveals the veryessence of theatricality : what is showed on those contemporary stages is the emergence of a process, animage in construction, a work-still-in-progress...This is what coins down the expression « théâtreperformantiel » (« performantial theatre » versus performativity). Frictions between representation, illusionand performativity provoke a constant oscillation between meta-theatrical distance, self-referentiality, shockand sensationnal immersion. It even flirts with the dream of total art. These works also rely on an activespectator's gaze. In the midst of these contradictions, stage images oppose a resistance to the visual flows ofthis world. These movements are explored through a field analysis and a close-up on the creative processesof three Flemish and Dutch groups created around 2000 : Abattoir Fermé, the Warme Winkel andWunderbaum. Participative observation offers deeper insight into the aesthetic and ideological issues at stakeat the heart of this encounter between theatre and performance. It also reveals the currency and the validity ofquestioning the avant-garde's ideals given the context of an economic crisis and political tightening

Streszczenie:
(in English): This Thesis deals with the phenomenon of indirect translation. Since indirect translation is still relatively common in the Czech culture, but at the same time rather understudied, the aim of this Thesis is to describe the phenomenon in more detail and with the help of an actual text analysis to investigate the influence this method has on the final translation. Two texts were chosen for the analysis, both written by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, being a characteristic sample of the bibliography of Czech indirect translations of Dutch written works. Compiling this bibliography was one of the tasks of this Thesis. It documents the extent to which indirect translation was used in past and present, and it also shows what kind of texts are most likely to be translated indirectly. Finally, the chosen texts were reduced (using sample method) to fragments that were then analysed in terms of stylistic and semantic shifts. According to the analysis the most common shifts appeared to the stylistic ones, mostly those that result in weakening the original style of the author in favour of the translator's own style. What the semantic shifts concerns, in comparison with the mediating translation they seem to occur twice as often in the mediated translation.

Streszczenie:
This article aims to contribute to the study of Belgian Dutch as an immigrant language in North America. It does so with the specific hypothesis that the pre-migration sociolinguistic and language political context in migrants’ home countries plays an important role, in particular with regard to societal multilingualism, as underlying layers of multilingualism can have an impact on the post-migration contact situation. Using the diary of a Flemish missionary who moved to Canada in 1886 as our main source, both Dutch-French and Dutch-English language contact are charted over a 25-year time span, with specific attention to lexical borrowing. We discuss the impact of a number of mostly language-internal variables on the relative frequency of lexical borrowing from each source language (e.g., semantic field, part of speech, level of integration in the target language, luxury versus necessary loans), revealing highly divergent borrowing profiles for French and English. The article rounds off by assessing the explanatory value of the pre-migration sociolinguistic context of Belgian Dutch, for the language patterns observed in this specific ego-document, discussing the interaction between past and present layers of language contact.

Streszczenie:
The Kingdom of Belgium is a small European country with three official languages, among them Dutch. It was not until the 20th century that Dutch became firmly established as the official state language in this country. In addition, the language which is spoken by the Flemish people has some peculiarities which make it different from the Dutch language which is used in the Netherlands. In order to understand the reasons for these differences, it is necessary to look at the history of the country. This article traces the history of the formation of literary Dutch in the territory of modern Belgium and shows the different stages from the 13th century to the present, which led to the formation of a complex continuum of languages in this region. The author also answers the question of the place of the southern version of the Dutch language in the Dutch-speaking region.

Streszczenie:
The article discusses the main stages in the development of the language situation in the Brussels — Capital Region in the context of historical and socio-cultural phenomena. The purpose of the study is to illustrate the influence of the Dutch language on the Belgian varieties of French. The tasks to be solved are the substantiation of the legitimacy of the division of the Belgian variants of the French language into Brussels and Walloon variants, as well as the clarification of the issue of recognizing the Marolian as a mixed Franco-Dutch language. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the division of the Belgian version of the French language into Brussels and Walloon is, to a greater extent, of a historical nature and is currently difficult. Modern Dutch, along with English and Arabic, influences Belgian French throughout the country, however, given Brussels’ metropolitan status, as well as being surrounded by Flemish territory, it can be assumed that this influence is especially noticeable in the Brussels-Capital Region. Elements of the Marolian language are used mainly as original linguocultural inclusions in the Dutch and French languages of the capital. The result of this study of the features of the french spoken in Brussels is the conclusion that this variant retains features that are very different from Walloon French. On the one hand, the transition to a common French norm blurs the lines between these two options, on the other hand, the Flemish prehistory of the Brussels-Capital Region introduces many Dutch elements into the French language of this enclave. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time it takes into account the influence of the Marolian language on the formation of the Brussels version of French, and also reveals the specifics of the functioning of this version in the conditions of multilingualism, characteristic of modern Brussels.
