Streszczenie:
Some applications of thin-film high-temperature superconductors, such as bolometers, radiation shielding, and space-cooled electronics, require knowledge of the superconducting-state radiative properties. At present, no general predictive model of the radiative properties has been presented. In this work, reflectance predictions based on two of the major theories of the superconducting state, the classical Drude–London theory and the quantum-mechanical Mattis–Bardeen theory, are compared with the available experimental data to determine the best method for predicting the radiative properties of thin-film Y-Ba-Cu-O. It is seen that the Mattis–Bardeen theory is more successful than the Drude–London theory in predicting the reflectance. Consequently, approximate formulae for the Mattis–Bardeen theory are developed, thus enhancing the theory’s usefulness for engineering calculations.

Streszczenie:
Within the framework of the fermion-spin theory, the charge transport in the doped Mott insulators on a honeycomb lattice is studied by taking into account the pseudogap effect. It is shown that the conductivity spectrum in the low-doped regime is separated by the pseudogap into a low-energy non-Drude peak followed by a broad mid-infrared band. However, the decrease of the pseudogap with the increase of doping leads to a shift of the position of the mid-infrared band towards the low-energy non-Drude peak, and then the low-energy Drude behavior recovers in the high-doped regime. The combined results of both the doped honeycomb-lattice and square-lattice Mott insulators indicate that the two-component conductivity induced by the pseudogap is a universal feature in the doped Mott insulators.

In this paper, we construct a split octonionic mathematical approach to generalized electromagnetic and gravito-Heavisidian chirality of dyons by modification of the Drude–Born–Fedorov constitutive relations. In this context, we describe dual Euclidean space-times structure associated with [Formula: see text] Zorn’s vector matrix realization of split octonion. As such, using the Zorn’s vector matrix realization, an alternative form of generalized Proca–Maxwell equations of massive dyons is obtained in chiral media. It is well known that in weak unified gravito-Heavisidian field, the Einstein’s equations become Maxwell-like equations under the first approximation. Thus, we study the gravito-Heavisidian analogous theory to electromagnetic theory, and discuss the Drude–Born–Fedorov constitutive relations, gravito-Heavisidian field, Proca–Maxwell equations and gravito-Heavisidian wave equations for linear gravitational chiral field of gravito-dyons in flat split octonion space-time.

Copper and gold films with thicknesses between approximately 10 and 60 nm have been prepared by electron beam evaporation and characterized by spectrophotometry from the near infrared up to the near ultraviolet spectral regions. From near normal incidence transmission and reflection spectra, dispersion of optical constants have been determined by means of spectra fits utilizing a merger of the Drude model and the beta-distributed oscillator model. All spectra could be fitted in the full spectral region with a total of seven dispersion parameters. The obtained Drude damping parameters shows a clear trend to increase with decreasing film thickness. This behavior is discussed in the context of additional non-optical characterization results and turned out to be consistent with a simple mean-free path theory.

Streszczenie:
It is well known that the Casimir force calculated at large separations using the Lifshitz theory differs by a factor of 2 for metals described by the Drude or plasma models. We argue that this difference is entirely determined by the contribution of transverse electric (s) evanescent waves. Taking into account that there is a lack of experimental information on the electromagnetic response of metals to low-frequency evanescent waves, we propose an experiment on measuring the magnetic field of an oscillating magnetic dipole spaced in a vacuum above a thick metallic plate. According to our results, the lateral components of this field are governed by the transverse electric evanescent waves and may vary by orders of magnitude depending on the model describing the permittivity of the plates used in calculations and the oscillation frequency of the magnetic dipole. Measuring the lateral component of the magnetic field for typical parameters of the magnetic dipole designed in the form of a 1-mm coil, one could either validate or disprove the applicability of the Drude model as a response function of metal in the range of low-frequency evanescent waves. This will elucidate the roots of the Casimir puzzle lying in the fact that the theoretical predictions of the Lifshitz theory using the Drude model are in contradiction with the high-precision measurements of the Casimir force at separations exceeding 150 nm. Possible implications of the suggested experiment for a wide range of topics in optics and condensed matter physics dealing with evanescent waves are discussed.

Streszczenie:
There is a long-standing issue that the optical conductivity in normal-state of cuprate superconductors deviates the conventional Drude type marked by [Formula: see text] dependence, exhibiting two main components from underdoping to overdoping, a narrow band peaked around zero energy and a broadband centered in the mid-infrared region called mid-infrared band. Within the renormalized t-J model and self-consistent mean field theory, we discuss the doping and energy dependence of optical conductivity in cuprate superconductors. Our results show that the appearance of the pseudogap in normal state is responsible for anomalous optical conductivity, giving rise to the mid-infrared band. In particular, in analogy to the doping dependence of pseudogap, optical conductivity is also strongly doping dependent. By increasing the doping concentration, the spectral weight of the optical conductivity suppressed strongly in underdoped region increases quickly, and the peak position of the mid-infrared band moves towards to the lower energy region, then incorporates into the narrow band centered in zero energy in the heavily overdoped region.

In studies of women's legislative behaviour, the concept of critical mass is widely used and, more recently, criticised as a tool for understanding the relationship between the percentage of female legislators and the passage of legislation beneficial to women as a group. In this research note, we revisit classic contributions by Rosabeth Moss Kanter and Drude Dahlerup and outline and discuss their assumptions regarding anticipated connections between numbers and outcomes. We find that later gender and politics scholars have often misconstrued their work, with crucial implications for subsequent research on relations between the descriptive and substantive representation of women. We argue that clarifying the theoretical origins of the critical mass concept is crucial for forging a more coherent and cumulative research agenda on women's political representation.

This paper provides a review of the complicated problems in Lifshitz theory describing the Casimir force between real material plates composed of metals and dielectrics, including different approaches to their resolution. For both metallic plates with perfect crystal lattices and any dielectric plates, we show that the Casimir entropy calculated in the framework of Lifshitz theory violates the Nernst heat theorem when the well-approved dielectric functions are used in computations. The respective theoretical Casimir forces are excluded by the measurement data of numerous precision experiments. In the literature, this situation has been called the Casimir puzzle and the Casimir conundrum for the cases of metallic and dielectric plates, respectively. This review presents a summary of both the main theoretical and experimental findings on this subject. Next, a discussion is provided of the main approaches proposed in the literature to bring the Lifshitz theory into agreement with the measurement data and with the laws of thermodynamics. Special attention is paid to the recently suggested spatially nonlocal Drude-like response functions, which consider the relaxation properties of conduction electrons, as does the standard Drude model, but lead to the theoretical results being in agreement with both thermodynamics and the measurement data through the alternative response to quantum fluctuations of the mass shell. Further advances and trends in this field of research are discussed.

In the framework of the generalized Lorenz–Mie theory (GLMT), the optical force and torque on a graphene-coated gold nanosphere by a vector Bessel beam are investigated. The core of the particle is gold, whose dielectric function is given by the Drude–Sommerfeld model, and the coating is multilayer graphene with layer number N, whose dielectric function is described by the Lorentz–Drude model. The axial optical force Fz and torque Tz are numerically analyzed, and the effects of the layer number N, wavelength λ, and beam parameters (half-cone angle α0, polarization, and order l) are mainly discussed. Numerical results show that the optical force and torque peaks can be adjusted by increasing the thickness of the graphene coating, and can not be adjusted by changing α0 and l. However, α0 and l can change the magnitude of the optical force and torque. The numerical results have potential applications involving the trapped graphene-coated gold nanosphere.

We present results on the determination of the differential Casimir force between an Au-coated sapphire sphere and the top and bottom of Au-coated deep silicon trenches performed by means of the micromechanical torsional oscillator in the range of separations from 0.2 to 8 μm. The random and systematic errors in the measured force signal are determined at the 95% confidence level and combined into the total experimental error. The role of surface roughness and edge effects is investigated and shown to be negligibly small. The distribution of patch potentials is characterized by Kelvin probe microscopy, yielding an estimate of the typical size of patches, the respective r.m.s. voltage and their impact on the measured force. A comparison between the experimental results and theory is performed with no fitting parameters. For this purpose, the Casimir force in the sphere-plate geometry is computed independently on the basis of first principles of quantum electrodynamics using the scattering theory and the gradient expansion. In doing so, the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity of Au is found from the optical data extrapolated to zero frequency by means of the plasma and Drude models. It is shown that the measurement results exclude the Drude model extrapolation over the region of separations from 0.2 to 4.8 μm, whereas the alternative extrapolation by means of the plasma model is experimentally consistent over the entire measurement range. A discussion of the obtained results is provided.

Spectrophotometry has been widely used to retrieve the dielectric function of a bulk iridium sample using an extended version of the Drude–Lorentz model. The parameters of the model are optimized using a spectral-projected-gradient-method-assisted acceptance-probability-controlled simulated annealing approach. Furthermore, optimized values of Drude parameters corresponding to the optical response of electrons and holes (scattering frequency of electrons, the ratio between scattering frequencies of holes and electrons, the ratio between effective masses of electrons and holes, the ratio between the number densities of holes and electrons, and electron volume plasma frequency) are used to evaluate charge transport and magnetic properties. These include static and dynamic conductivities, intrinsic mean free paths, the effective mass of charge carriers and their number densities, Fermi velocities and energies, densities of states at Fermi energies, mobilities, specific heats, Hall’s coefficient, thermal conductivities, charge carrier coupling constant, paramagnetic and diamagnetic susceptibilities, and the number of Bohr magnetons. In addition, optimized resonance energy values of the Lorentz contribution to the dielectric function were compared with the background information provided by density-functional-theory calculations for iridium. A decomposition of the energy loss function was used as the starting point to calculate the effective numbers of bound electrons involved in interband transitions, as well as the densities of states at the final energies of the sets of transitions considered. The Drude–Lorentz model involves charge carrier parameters for both electrons and holes, as well as the resonance energies correlating with the energies associated with quantum transitions. To a large extent, several physical quantities calculated from optimized parameters exhibit values close to those obtained from measurements or by applying other models, including quantum mechanics formulations.

We study the optical conductivity and orbital susceptibility of the two-orbital Hubbard model within the extended linearized dynamical mean-field theory. In the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP), the optical conductivity of the wide band presents a non-zero Drude peak, while the optical conductivity of the narrow band drops to zero in the lower energy region. It is shown that the OSMP is constrained by the negative crystal-field splitting, while it can survive in the region with positive crystal-field splitting. We also find that the orbital susceptibility presents a reversion at Fermi surface in the OSMP regime, which implies that orbital ordering can coexist with OSMP in two-orbital systems.

AbstractThe millivolt energy resolution now obtainable in electron energy-loss spectra (EELS) on the latest monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope corresponds, via the uncertainty principle, to a time range of 414 fs (for 10 meV resolution), and a time resolution of 0.138 fs (for energy range of 30 eV). (Thus, the width of an EELS peak is inversely related to the lifetime of an excitation.) This compares favorably with the latest X-ray free electron lasers. The time evolution of a Drude–Lorentz oscillator may be obtained from an EELS using logarithmic deconvolution followed by Kramers–Kronig analysis to extract the frequency-dependent dielectric function, and a final Fourier transform from frequency to time domain. This time-dependent dielectric function was interpreted as the impulse response of electrons, phonons, or ions based on the Drude–Lorentz theory. The time evolution of electronic oscillators from ice and protein, extracted from low resolution experimental data, were compared. Using higher energy resolution data we have also extracted the time-resolved spectra from excitons in an alkali halide, BaF2. Despite the small scanning transmission electron microscope probe size, delocalization limits the spatial resolution to about 50 nm, which is, nevertheless, better than the millimeter resolution of infrared absorption spectroscopy or Raman spectroscopy.

The response of plasmonic metal particles to an electromagnetic wave produces significant features at the nanoscale level. Different properties of the internal composition of a metal, such as its ionic background and the free electron gas, begin to manifest more prominently. As the dimensions of the nanostructures decrease, the classical local theory gradually becomes inadequate. Therefore, Maxwell’s equations need to be supplemented with a relationship determining the dynamics of current density which is the essence of nonlocal plasmonic models. In this field of physics, the standard (linearized) hydrodynamic model (HDM) has been widely adopted with great success, serving as the basis for a variety of simulation methods. However, ongoing efforts are also being made to expand and refine it. Recently, the GNOR (general nonlocal optical response) modification of the HDM has been used, with the intention of incorporating the influence of electron gas diffusion. Clearly, from the classical description of fluid dynamics, a close relationship between viscosive damping and diffusion arises. This offers a relevant motivation for introducing the GNOR modification in an alternative manner. The standard HDM and its existing GNOR modification also do not include the influence of interband electron transitions in the conduction band and other phenomena that are part of many refining modifications of the Drude–Lorentz and other models of metal permittivity. In this article, we present a modified version of GNOR-HDM that incorporates the viscosive damping of the electron gas and a generalized Drude–Lorentz term. In the selected simulations, we also introduce Landau damping, which corrects the magnitude of the standard damping constant of the electron gas based on the size of the nanoparticle. We have chosen a spherical particle as a suitable object for testing and comparing HD models and their modifications because it allows the calculation of precise analytical solutions for the interactions and, simultaneously, it is a relatively easily fabricated nanostructure in practice. Our contribution also includes our own analytical method for solving the HDM interaction of a plane wave with a spherical particle. This method forms the core of calculations of the characteristic quantities, such as the extinction cross-sections and the corresponding components of electric fields and current densities.

The disorder effect on superconducting properties of thin-film YBCO nanostructures in external magnetic fields is experimentally studied. The disorder was produced by irradiation with xenon ions. The research included transport measurements of narrow bridges based on HTSC YBCO films (thickness 50 nm) in strong magnetic fields (up to 12 T). Thus, for samples with different degrees of disorder, critical dependencies have been studied, i.e. the Hc2(T) phase transition line, the Hirr(T) irreversibility line, etc. The dependences of the mean-free path and critical temperature on the concentration of defects created by ion irradiation have been experimentally studied. The experimental data are described using formulas obtained within the framework of well-known models, such as the Ginzburg-Landau theory, the Drude theory and the Gorkov equations.

Abstract The optical response of spherical nanoparticles was studied based on the quasi-static approximation of classical electrodynamics. The simple Drude model was used to calculate the complex dielectric function of the metal. We investigated the behavior of the absorption cross-section spectra of metallic spherical core–shell (including dielectric-metal and metal-dielectric) nanoparticles numerically. We found that the number of resonance peaks in the absorption cross-section spectra depends on the number of metal-dielectric interfaces of the nanostructure, as predicted by plasmonic hybridization theory. Furthermore, the absorption cross-section spectra can be precisely controlled by changing the thickness of the shell and the dielectric constant of the medium.

Abstract We review the recent advances on exact results for dynamical correlation functions at large scales and related transport coefficients in interacting integrable models. We discuss Drude weights, conductivity and diffusion constants, as well as linear and nonlinear response on top of equilibrium and non-equilibrium states. We consider the problems from the complementary perspectives of the general hydrodynamic theory of many-body systems, including hydrodynamic projections, and form-factor expansions in integrable models, and show how they provide a comprehensive and consistent set of exact methods to extract large scale behaviours. Finally, we overview various applications in integrable spin chains and field theories.

We study the lateral Casimir force between corrugated dielectric plates. We use the dielectric contrast perturbation theory [R. Golestanian, Phys. Rev. Lett.95, 230601, (2005)], which allows us to consider arbitrary deformations with large amplitudes. We consider sinusoidal, rectangular, and sawtooth corrugations, for samples made of silicon and gold. We use the plasma and Drude–Lorentz models for the permittivity of gold and silicon, respectively. For these geometries and materials, the lateral Casimir force is not a sinusoidal function of the relative lateral displacement of plates when the gap between the plates in comparable with the depth of the corrugations. Our results facilitate the design of miniaturized devices based on lateral Casimir forces.

Graphene applications in electronics require experimental study of the formation of high-quality Ohmic contacts and deeper understanding of electron transport mechanisms at metal/grapheme contacts. We have studied carrier transport in twisted CVD graphene decorated with electrodeposited Co particles forming Ohmic contacts with graphene layers. We have compared layer resistivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field R(T, B) for as-synthesized and decorated twisted graphene on silicon oxide substrates. Experiments have proven the existence of negative (induction < 1 Tl) and positive (induction > 1 Tl) contributions to magnetoresistance in both specimen types. The R(T, B) functions have been analyzed based on the theory of 2D quantum interference corrections to Drude conductivity taking into account competition of hopping conductivity mechanism. We show that for the experimental temperature range (2–300 K) and magnetic field range (up to 8 Tl), carrier transport description in test graphene requires taking into account at least three interference contributions to conductivity, i.e., from weak localization, intervalley scattering and pseudospin chirality, as well as graphene buckling induced by thermal fluctuations.

The electrodynamic response in the normal and superconducting ground states of K 3 C 60 and Rb 3 C 60 is reviewed. The normal state optical properties are rather unconventional since they can be explained only by considering the interplay of a Drude-like and a mid-infrared absorption component. On the other hand, the superconducting state optical properties are more straightforward since they display clear fingerprints related to the conventional weak coupling limit of the BCS ground state. Our optical spectra clearly display a well developed excitation due to the superconducting gap. Moreover, the analysis of our optical results in the superconducting state within the standard Eliashberg electron–phonon theory of superconductivity strongly supports a pairing mechanism mediated by high frequency intramolecular phonon modes.

According to the hydrodynamic Drude model, surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanostructures blueshift owing to the non-local response of the metal’s electron gas. The screening length characterizing the non-local effect is often small relative to the overall dimensions of the metallic structure, which enables us to derive a coarse-grained non-local description using matched asymptotic expansions; a perturbation theory for the blueshifts of arbitrary-shaped nanometallic structures is then developed. The effect of non-locality is not always a perturbation and we present a detailed analysis of the ‘bonding’ modes of a dimer of nearly touching nanowires where the leading-order eigenfrequencies and eigenmode distributions are shown to be a renormalization of those predicted assuming a local metal permittivity.

Streszczenie:
Thermal radiation absorption in metallic particles is an important phenomenon in many contemporary laser-processing techniques, including laser cladding of coating materials and laser cleaning of particulate contaminations. In this work, the Drude free-electron theory and electromagnetic wave theory are utilized to characterize the internal absorption of CO2 laser radiation in aluminum, chromium, and nickel particles. The results show that metallic particles have unique radiation properties. Radiation absorption in large particles occurs only in a very narrow region of the front particle surface, which results in inefficient radiation absorption. On the other hand, micron and submicron particles can absorb radiation very efficiently, due to the strong diffraction effect at the particle surface. For extremely small particles (e.g., nanometer particles), radiation absorption becomes less efficient. The particle absorption efficiency is found to increase with temperature, and this temperature dependence can be determined from those of flat metal surfaces at the normal incidence.

We analyze a random resistor–inductor–capacitor (RLC) lattice model of two-dimensional metal–insulator composites. The results are compared with Bruggeman's and Landauer's Effective Medium Approximations where a discrepancy was observed for some frequency zones. Such a discrepancy is mainly caused by the strong conductivity fluctuations. Indeed, a two-branches distribution is observed for low frequencies. We show also by increasing the system size that at pc the so-called Drude peak vanishes; it increases for vanishing losses.

An impedance approach has been implemented to design truncated 1D photonic crystals, sustaining optical surface modes, with any predetermined wavelength and wavevector. The implementation is realized as a free Windows program that calculates both the thicknesses of the double layers and the thickness of the final truncated layer at given refractive indices of the layers. The dispersion of the refractive indices can be given in the form of the Sellmeier/Drude formulas or in the form of a wavelength-n-k table. For mixed layers, the Maxwell Garnett theory can be used. This approach is suitable for studying and visualizing the field distribution inside photonic crystals, dispersion, and other aspects of the designed structures that sustain optical surface modes. Therefore, this program should promote scientific development and implementation of practical applications in this area.
