Abraham Bennet was a clergyman and electrical experimenter who invented the gold-leaf electroscope and the doubler of electricity. He used a mechanical revolving version of the latter to devise a concept of ‘adhesive electricity’, which had an important influence on Volta in the formulation of his contact theory of electromotivity. Bennet managed to balance his clerical position, obtained by patronage, with the friendship and assistance of the local philosophical community, which included Erasmus Darwin, White Watson and the members of the Lunar and Derby Philosophical Societies. The Lunar members helped him to publish his research and supported his nomination as F.R.S. in 1789; however, the relative harmony of the philosophical community represented by the Royal Society, which temporarily united provinces and metropolis, was shattered by the political turbulence of the revolutionary era. The delicate balancing act that allowed Bennet to claim support from Banks and Kaye at the same time as from Priestley and Darwin became more difficult and Bennet's research activity foundered due to ill health and political division.

A bender disk transducer can generate low-frequency sound in a small size and light weight. But traditional bender disk transducer only works at single frequency by using first order bending mode and emits moderate levels of power. In this work, a double resonance bander disk low frequency transducer is investigated by using finite element model. The double resonance bender disk transducer consists of two segmented 3-3 mode piezoelectric ceramic disk on the both side of hollow metal disc, which could generate larger displacement in order to increase power radiation. A simple elastic mass system placed inside the hollow metal disc is introduced in the system to produce other lower resonance modes. Through the FEM calculations, it is found that the transmitting voltage response (TVR) of bender disk transducer could enhance 4dB in the first order bending mode resonance frequency, which is compared with traditional bender disk transducer with the same size. The TVR of lower resonance mode which is produced by additional central simple support elastic mass system in segmented bender disk transducer is more than 130dB. Through the optimization of finite element simulation, a double resonance bender disk transducer is designed, and its resonance frequency is 600Hz and 1kHz, respectively. The value of TVR is 130dB and 134dB corresponding to two resonance frequency. The double resonance bender disk transducer is compact dimension, low weight and it is a high performance low frequency transducer.

Alan Bennett is one of the most popular mainstream dramatists working in Britain today, his canon now a mainstay of regional and amateur theatre companies. Yet for a writer who was once compared to John Osborne as taking ‘the moral temperature of the nation’, his output is widely regarded as apolitical and, at worst, ‘safe’. In the following article, Richard Scarr suggests that this viewpoint is misleading, and argues that Bennett is not only one of the most politically contentious playwrights in dominant theatre, but that the ideological viewpoints he has supported have changed as his career has progressed. Richard Scarr is an English graduate of the University of North London, and has recently completed an MA in Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary and Westfield College. He is currently researching a PhD on the rhetoric of Renaissance comedy, with particular emphasis on the double-entendre.

La récupération de l'énergie est le processus qui consiste à convertir l'énergie inutilisée présente dans notre environnement en énergie électrique utilisable pour alimenter un système électronique. Les récupérateurs d'énergie cinétique à transduction électrostatique (eKEH) utilisent l'énergie cinétique présente dans l’environnement, qui provient d'un objet en mouvement ou de vibrations, afin de la convertir en énergie électrique. Le principe employé est basé sur un condensateur variable polarisé. En ajoutant une couche triboélectrique entre ses armatures et en créant un contact entre elles, un eKEH devient ce qui l’on appelle communément un nanogénérateur triboélectrique (TENG). Ce type de transducteur accumule des charges par contact dans la couche triboélectrique qui devient ainsi un électret dont le champs électrique semi-permanent généré permet une variation de la distribution des charges électriques dans les électrodes par induction électrostatique.La modification de l'architecture d'un TENG par l'ajout d'une troisième électrode permet de transformer un transducteur à capacité simple en un TENG à capacité double. Le fait de doubler l'élément de conversion dans un transducteur doit permettre d’augmenter la quantité d'énergie convertie. Le circuit électronique choisi pour redresser le signal obtenu en sortie du générateur est le doubleur de Bennet. L’absence de tension de saturation en sortie de ce circuit est une caractéristique particulière de cette pompe de charge dite instable. Elle se traduit par une augmentation exponentielle de la tension de sortie et des charges accumulées dans le condensateur de stockage qui augmentent (en théorie) de manière infinie. Cela signifie que la surface du cycle charge-tension aux bornes du TENG, et donc l’énergie convertie du domaine mécanique, augmente à chaque itération du cycle mécanique du transducteur.Cette thèse comprend l'analyse, la simulation et la démonstration expérimentale d’un doubleur de Bennet comportant deux capacités variables asymétriques incluant chacune une couche triboélectrique. Il est montré que les performances du système « double TENG » - « double Bennet » sont supérieures au doubleur de Bennet classique. L'étude analytique s'aligne sur les simulations. Le système a été testé expérimentalement. Il en est conclu que les résultats expérimentaux sont pertinents lorsqu'ils sont comparés aux performances du système classique d’un « TENG mono-capacitif » - « Bennet simple». Par rapport au doubleur de Bennet classique, le double Bennet atteint les mêmes niveaux de tension en moins de temps. Cela est dû à l'avantage du double condensateur TENG qui augmente le nombre de charges accumulées par cycle mécanique. Energy harvesting is the process that involves converting otherwise unused energy present in our environment into usable electrical energy that can be used to power an electronic system. Electrostatic kinetic energy harvesters (eKEHs) utilize vastly present kinetic energy that originates either from an object in motion or vibrations and converts it into electrical energy. The employed principle is based on a polarized variable electrostatic capacitor. With an addition of a triboelectric layer between its plates and utilizing the triboelectrification effect, an eKEH is transformed into a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). This type of transducer accumulates charges by contact in the triboelectric layer which thus becomes an electret whose generated semi-permanent electric field allows a variation of the distribution of the electric charges in the electrodes by electrostatic induction.Altering the architecture of a TENG by adding the third electrode, a single-capacitive transducer is converted into a double-capacitive TENG. Doubling the conversion element in a transducer is expected to increase the amount of converted energy. Chosen electronics circuit to condition obtained signal from the generator is Bennet’s charge doubler. An increase without saturation point at the output of this circuit is the unique characteristic of this unstable charge pump. It reflects through an exponential increase of output voltage and a number of charges accumulated in the storage capacitor which increase (in theory) in an infinite way. This means that the surface of the charge-voltage cycle at the terminals of the TENG, and thus the converted energy of the mechanical domain, increases at each iteration of the mechanical cycle of the transducer.The scope of this thesis encompasses the simulation, analytical and experimental research of Bennet’s charge doubler with two asymmetric variable capacitors each containing a triboelectric layer. It is postulated that the performance of the "double TENG" - "double Bennet" system is superior to the classic Bennet’s double. The results of analytical and simulation analysis have shown that the expected behavior of this circuit aligns with hypothesized performance results. The system has been tested experimentally. It is concluded that the results of the constructed system are relevant when compared with the reported performance of the classic "single-capacitive TENG" - "Bennet’s doubler" system.When compared with classic Bennet’s doubler, double Bennet reaches the same voltage levels in less time. That is due to the advantage of double capacitive TENG which increases the number of accumulated charges per mechanical cycle. In analytical analysis, it was found that the two TENG capacitors are codependent and that in operation they affect one another.The output signal of double Bennet is characterized by high voltages ranging from a few hundreds of volts to a few kilovolts (kV). To reduce the rectified output voltage to a level compatible with a commercial application, a Buck DC-DC converter is implemented. This requires a switch. This thesis proposes and studies the use of a high-voltage MEMS micro-plasma switch whose actuation voltages is defined by Paschen’s law. Within the scope of this thesis, the theoretical and experimental studies of this law at the micrometer scale propose optimal actuation voltages for better management of the converted energy

The recent interest in bent core liquid crystal has shown many unique physical properties, such the anomalous behaviour of the elastic constants (SplayK1, Twist K2, and BendK3). In bent core liquid crystals it is observed that K3K1). Such behaviour is analogous to calamitic liquid crystals but is in contrast to all other bent-core nematic materials reported to date. Such a result questions some of the current explanations for the elastic behaviour of bent-core materials. Using molecular field theory and atomistic modelling the different elastic behaviour predicted is again in excellent agreement with experimental results. The bend angle is again shown to be an important part in determining the physical properties of bent-core nematic liquid crystals. In a mixture from an oxadiazole dopant and calamitic host liquid crystal, it was found that a filament structure appears in the nematic phase. The filaments appear to interfere with the measurements for elastic constants. In order to understand the filament structure many methods were used including SAXS, dielectric permittivity, and DSC. It was found that the mixture had formed a gel - like phase. The gel is composed of a liquid crystal network and a liquid crystal background, not seen before in any gel system. Due to the liquid crystalline properties both the network and the background can be aligned and manipulated. The new gel phase can possess many new unique properties which warrant further studies understand further into how fundamentally the phase is forming.

Marguerite Duras a assurément pensé à la littérature en se mesurant sans cesse à sa production littéraire et plus amplement, à sa production artistique. Littérature, cinéma, théâtre font en effet l’objet d’une réflexion constante chez l’écrivain qui montre par là une tendance certaine pour la pensée théorique. Si Marguerite Duras a pu s’exprimer négativement vis-à-vis de la théorie, c’est parce qu’elle redoute les dérives de l’esprit théorique qui peut parfois se révéler dogmatique. L’adhésion à l’idéologie du PCF d’abord partagée puis contestée, fait ainsi l’objet de sévères critiques qui donneront raison dans son œuvre à des textes littéraires traversés par cette épreuve du théorique doctrinaire. D’autres engagements théoriques et politiques prouveront en revanche incontestablement l’attrait intellectuel de l’écrivain envers une époque qui, entre les années 1960 et 1980, fait avancer le discours de la théorie et notamment de la modernité littéraire. Cette thèse se propose de montrer que la théorie occupe sans cesse l’esprit de l’auteur, qu’elle se révèle particulièrement sous la forme d’une tentation à laquelle l’écrivain ne succombe jamais définitivement, et qui donc revient comme une obsession habiter et interroger son œuvre. Cette tentation s’intègre d’abord à la vie de Duras qui évolue au sein d’une génération fortement politisée et marquée par la pensée critique. Elle saura ensuite s’incorporer à l’activité créatrice de l’auteur et, dès lors, à sa pratique littéraire et artistique. La tentation du théorique suit ainsi deux directions. For sure Marguerite Duras always thought about literature by comparing herself to the rest of literature and the artistic production of her time. Indeed, literature, cinema and theater are the reflexive centers of a constant thinking which shows how much theory is a main issue for the writer herself. Her apparent and negative odds against theory in general are all because of the wanderings of the dogmatic way of the theoretical spirit. Being an active member of the French Communist Party (PCF), sharing its ideological point of view and then quitting it made way for a severe criticism and gave to her literary works a doctrinal trial. Others theoretical and political commitments may decidedly show in contrast her intellectual attraction of the writer for her age which, between the 1960s and the 1980s, made theory and literary modernity look forward. This essay will show how theory is always on Duras’s Mind as it is for her such a temptation that she never totally succumbs to, and that came back as an obsession to haunt and question her works. This temptation marks at first place her life that went through a harsh political generation that also dealt with criticism and thinking. This temptation would also be an important part of her creativity process and made her way unto literary and artistic technicals. The Theoretical temptation she dealt with went on two different ways. She went on a public adventure but without never belonging to the chorus of her times or explicitly belonging to the New Novel too. She stood as a solitary voice, a voice of her that expressed herself as a intimate confidence. This voice whispered in her writings her personal and conceptual thoughts that escorted modernity in literature. Her voice made of theoretical temptation would mingle at last with her poetical voice which reveals, through a reflexive game, the productive strengh of her writing. Vowed to a never-ending movment unto the last word, beyond the walls of all genres, the tremendous creativity of Marguerite Duras will give birth to a mesmerizing landscape in her works that goes unto the modern writing

System dynamics modelling has been used for around 40 years to address complex, systemic, dynamic problems, those often described as wicked. But, system dynamics modelling is not an exact science and arguments about the most suitable techniques to use in which circumstances, continues. The nature of these wicked problems is investigated through a series of case studies where poor situational awareness among stakeholders was identified. This was found to be an underlying cause for management failure, suggesting need for better ways of recognising and managing wicked problem situations. Human cognition is considered both as a limitation and enabler to decision-making in wicked problem environments. Naturalistic and deliberate decision-making are reviewed. The thesis identifies the need for integration of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Case study results and a review of the literature led to identification of a set of principles of method to be applied in an integrated framework, the aim being to develop an improved way of addressing wicked problems. These principles were applied to a series of cases in an action research setting. However, organisational and political barriers were encountered. This limited the exploitation and investigation of cases to varying degrees. In response to a need identified in the literature review and the case studies, a tool is designed to facilitate analysis of multi-factorial, non-linear causality. This unique tool and its use to assist in problem conceptualisation, and as an aid to testing alternate strategies, are demonstrated. Further investigation is needed in relation to the veracity of combining causal influences using this tool and system dynamics, broadly. System dynamics modelling was found to have utility needed to support analysis of wicked problems. However, failure in a particular modelling project occurred when it was found necessary to rely on human judgement in estimating values to be input into the models. This was found to be problematic and unacceptably risky for sponsors of the modelling effort. Finally, this work has also identified that further study is required into: the use of human judgement in decision-making and the validity of system dynamics models that rely on the quantification of human judgement.

Double ionisation of the triatomic molecules presented in this chapter shows an added degree of complexity. Besides potentially having many more electrons, they have three vibrational degrees of freedom (three normal modes) instead of the single one in a diatomic molecule. For asymmetric and bent triatomic molecules multiple modes can be excited, so the spectral bands may be congested in all forms of electronic spectra, including double ionisation. Double photoionisation spectra of H2O, H2S, HCN, CO2, N2O, OCS, CS2, BrCN, ICN, HgCl2, NO2, and SO2 are presented with analysis to identify the electronic states of the doubly charged ions. The order of the molecules in this chapter is set first by the number of valence electrons, then by the molecular weight.

This chapter examines how Abbo, the well-connected abbot of Fleury (Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire) in the Orléanais, sought out papal protection in the mid-990s. As the terms of the bull he solicited from Gregory V reveal, he was out to remove the monastery almost entirely from established networks of patronage and association. Saint-Benoît would henceforth be an exempt house, answering only to Rome and the pope. This was a dramatic decision, and it was not one Abbo took lightly. It was occasioned by his difficulties with the local bishop of Orléans, Arnulf. Arnulf was also a close associate of the king, Hugh Capet, and as such posed a double threat. Just as Anno had found immunity the best means of fending off the local count of Worms, so papal exemption offered Abbo the ideal solution to his problems with Arnulf. Based on the Bennett 4R chain, we construct a rotating loop by fixing one R axis to the frame and the fixed R becomes a coaxial double R pair. The R pair opposite to the fixed double R is replaced by a spherical S pair which can be equivalent to a (RRR) open chain with non-coplanar intersecting axes. In the (RRR) sub-chain, we choose special axes and derive R|- R|(R(RRR)R chain moving with 2 DoFs. That moving R becomes a coaxial double R with the addition of another rigid body and the obtained chain with hybrid topology generates a 3-dof motion, which is mathematically modeled by a 3D submanifold of a 4D group of X motions. Because of the product closure in an X-motion group, adding an H pair with any pitch and an axis parallel to the fixed R axis leads to a mechanical generator of a 4D X-motion group. Then, parallel arrangement of two generators of the same X motion gives a new parallel generator of X motion, which can be actuated by four fixed R pairs; the two Hs must have distinct pitches. A special design with four collinear actuated axes is revealed too.

This paper proposes a novel architecture for the pilot stage of electro-hydraulic two-stage servovalves that does not need a quiescent flow and a torque motor as well as a flexure tube to operate. The architecture consists of two small piezoelectric valves, coupled with two fixed orifices, which allow variation of the differential pressure at the main stage spool extremities in order to move it with high response speed and accuracy. Each piezoelectric valve is actuated by a piezoelectric ring bender, which exhibits much greater displacement than a stack actuator of the same mass, and greater force than a rectangular bender. The concept is intended to reduce the influence of piezoelectric hysteresis. In order to assess the validity of the proposed configuration and its controller in terms of spool positioning accuracy and dynamic response, detailed simulations are performed by using the software Simscape Fluids. At 50% amplitude the −90° bandwidth is about 150Hz.
