Streszczenie:
This dissertation examines recidivism for domestic violence offenders under both traditional probation and specialized probation conditions. This research compares recidivism at a traditional probation locality (Riverside Criminal Justice Services) and a specialized domestic violence unit (Chesterfield Community Corrections Services) in order to determine the nature of recidivism at both localities. In addition, the research aims to identify individual risk factors which are statistically associated with recidivism. The research is based on secondary data and draws on offender criminal records generated by the Virginia State Police, as well the extraction of information from probation files at both localities. The multivariate models indicate that a higher degree of recidivism occurs at the specialized domestic violence unit, and that the experimental locality, along with a younger age, are consistently statistically significant predictors for recidivism. Less consistent but still statistically significant risk factors included positive drug tests, higher supervision levels, and unsuccessful probation completion. The implications of these findings, as well as policy recommendations and directions for future research are fully discussed.

Streszczenie:
The primary objectives of this thesis are to, circularly, deconstruct contemporary domestic violence policy while developing and evaluating methods for deconstructing policy. Policy is theorised as a discursive practice, which allows a variety of policies to be compared and critiqued by how they position the people they affect. These are known as subject positions, or subjectivities, and throughout this thesis I attempt to critique policy by examining the (re)construction of subjectivity. In addition, because policy is not theorised as functioning through direct causal relations there is an opening for psychoanalytic subjectivities where the subject positioning occurs at the level of the unconscious. Consequently, I have chosen to draw upon Parker's critical transformative psychoanalytic discourse analysis (CTPDA) as a psycho-discursive method where discourse analysis and psychoanalysis are combined in such as way that psychoanalysisis understood to be a culturally produced theory of self. Three separate analyses of two key, contemporary domestic violence policies demonstrate the utility of CTPDA by developing it as a method alongside the topic under consideration the use of 'family' to name concern of policy is considered in Te Rito from Aotearoa/New Zealand (A/NZ), who are world leaders in the domain of domestic violence, and 'consultation' where decisions have already been made and gender through the gender-neutral term 'domestic violence' are considered in Safety and Justice (S&J) from the UK, where much of this thesis was undertaken. In the final chapter, I argue that critique needs to be able to imagine its own policies and ways of realising them and highlight that psychoanalysis has the potential to offer an effective approach.

Streszczenie:
Domestic violence impacts millions of Americans annually and, in spite of the use of rehabilitative programs, recidivism in domestic violence continues to be more likely than in any other offense. To date, batterer intervention programs (BIPs) have not proven to be consistently impactful in reducing recidivism in cases of domestic violence. The purpose of this quasi-experimental, quantitative study was to examine differences in recidivism for first-time male domestic violence offenders who have participated in a BIP and a more recently developed alternative: victim-offender mediation (VOM). The theories of restorative justice and reintegrative shaming frame this study to determine if offenders take accountability for their actions and face the victim in mediation, there can be a reduction in recidivism. Archival data from records of first-time male, domestic violence offenders, between the ages of 18 and 30, who participated in either a VOM or BIP in a county in the Midwest were examined for recidivism 24-months postintervention, and analyzed with an ANCOVA analysis while controlling for age. The findings revealed no significant difference in recidivism for first-time male offenders 24-months post participation in a BIP or a VOM intervention while controlling for age F (1,109) =.081, p = .777. The findings provide support for the notion that restorative justice interventions may be an additional intervention used in cases of domestic violence deemed appropriate for the intervention. The findings from this study can add to the body of research examining interventions to address the high recidivism in cases of domestic violence, which impacts victims, offenders, and communities.

Streszczenie:
This thesis research has examined what male social workers believe to be the causes of domestic violence and, more importantly, what they believe causes non-violence between partners. The research was a qualitative study of interviews with men, mostly social workers, who worked with both perpetrators and victims of domestic violence. The aims of the research are to provide some answers as to why, despite the attention given to domestic violence and the provision of DV treatment programs by social workers and counsellors, in both public and private sectors, the problem remains intractable. Twenty men who worked in the area of domestic violence were interviewed, individually, with a series of twenty five questions. Two leaders of a local men's group were also interviewed. The main discussion topics for all these men were their views on the causes of domestic violence and then, more positively, what they felt were the reasons why most men, including themselves, were physically non-violent. Investigating what these men feel causes domestic violence and nonviolence may provide an insight into what brings most men in our society to be physically non-violent to their partners. Hopefully, this information can be used to implement factors into families and society to work towards non-violence. The interviewees' definitions of domestic violence were discussed, and what causes it. What causes non-violence, and scripting was positioned by them as the major factor in both. Within traditional Western male scripting lies males' sense of entitlement to privileged positions in their families and society. A question about violence surfaced. What is the purpose of violence? For the purpose of this research violence is defined as person or persons insisting on getting what they want, as a result of their claim to have the right to have it. Male entitlement to privileges was identified by five of the men as being problematical and a central cause of domestic violence. The other fifteen interviewees, as well as the two men from the men's groups, accepted but appeared to discount the issue on varying levels. Whilst five men saw the existence of male privilege as a significant problem that needs changing, ten of the others saw the existence of it, but defined it as normal, and therefore by implication, believe it will be maintained, or that it can not be changed. One of the underpinning dynamics revealed in this research is that the issue of male privilege is apparent to some and invisible to others, in the context of domestic violence this is going to be a problem. In dealing with domestic violence we have to not simply invest in putting more social workers in the DV area; they need to be properly and adequately trained, and adequately committed to a treatment model which foregrounds male privilege [and does not present men as victims.] We need public investment in DV counselling, training and accreditation. We need to address the issue of male privilege in the whole of society and to focus on creating equality of power in relationships between men and women.

Streszczenie:
The present study examined acculturation among Asian-Indians, residing in the United States and Canada, and explored: (1) whether acculturation can predict reporting of domestic violence, (2) how acculturation between Asian-Indians immigrants and US/Canadian born Asian-Indians is related to reporting domestic violence, and (3) how traditional practices such as arranged marriage and/or dowry influence the relationship between acculturation and domestic violence. Participants (N=100) were administered the Acculturation Scale for Asian Indians (ASAI; Parekh, 2000) and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2; Straus, 1996). Results demonstrated that acculturation was not found to be a good predictor of physical assault or psychological aggression and that acculturation was not significantly related to physical assault or psychological aggression. Significant results were found for birth status and acculturation. Traditional arranged marriage and dowry could not be addressed due to the low number of participants that could be classified into these variables. Therefore, a qualitative analysis was conducted. Factors influencing these results and limitations of the present study were offered.

Streszczenie:
The report of intimate violence is often taken on face value in research. With no gold standard existing, one partner's report is often an accepted measure of violence in the relationship. This discrepancy in reporting between intimate partners has been thoroughly examined, yet researchers still debate the reliability of single partner reporting. The current study extends upon the Archer (1999) meta-analysis of intimate violence discrepancy reporting, and includes current studies, instruments and research methods in the analysis. This study examines the discrepancy effect among thirty-four samples from studies of heterosexual intimate violence, finding that the discrepancy in general was sizeable for men's violence, and that different study conditions yield differing levels of discrepancy. This discrepancy level is a major issue when conducting quantitative research, especially typological studies, which utilise estimation and extrapolation of prevalence levels, and when violence data is used to evaluate recidivism. The current study identifies situations where the discrepancy is likely to be high and makes recommendations to improve the accuracy of the data being used to advise government policy and spending.

This thesis seeks to analyze the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV) within female same-sex relationships in order to uncover how/if it can be related to an invisibility of female same-sex relationships in society at large. By analyzing various articles and academic texts dealing with IPV in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships, the hope is to establish some core differences and similarities within the field of IPV research. The analysis will also look at how the notion of the violent female is addressed, and how other characteristics such as race, ethnicity, age and ableness compound in the narratives of IPV in female same-sex relationships. The analysis will be carried out with the use of domestic violence theory through an ecological model which allows all environments an individual inhabits to be analyzed. Intersectionality alongside a post-colonial and queerfeminist approach will also be applied in the qualitative text analysis of the material. Numerous methods and explanations are put forward in the literature in order to explain IPV, in hetero and homo relationships. Lacking in the discussion is the image of the female abuser while also missing discussions on other intersecting identity markers.

The Aim of this study is to examine violence in close relationship and to explore the different explanation on men's violence as well as the factors that contribute to their violent behavior. Violence in close relationships can occur in different forms and anyone can fall as a victim of both physical and mental abuse. Violence and discrimination against women violates the principles of equal rights and respect for human dignity. In Sweden, men's violence against women and violence in close relationships is still a major problem that requires great work and attention. It is one of Sweden's responsibility to meet all people's equal values and rights and to fight violence in close relationship.

This commentary outlines how my published works have contributed to knowledge on violence against black and minority ethnic (BME) or minority women in the UK, particularly in relation to domestic violence, forced marriage and so called 'honour' based violence (HBV). They help to define and enhance our understanding of these issues. In addition, they have critiqued multiculturalism and influenced, advocated and developed the former Home Office Minister, Mike O'Brien's concept of 'mature multiculturalism' (Parliamentary Debates, 1999; also cited in Home Office, 2000:10), and utilised the theoretical framework of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989 and 1991) to address these problems. I have also located my works within the framework of violence against women and girls (VAWG), secularism, equalities and human rights. My publications have reflected upon and influenced policy, practice and research, and as such, contributed to documenting the history and achievements of black feminism.

Bracewell, Kelly Anne. "Teenagers' experiences of domestic violence refuges". Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2017. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/20513/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Refuges have been central to UK domestic violence service provision since the 1970s. Early studies focused on the needs of adult women but increasingly, children and teenagers have also become the business of refuges. Much of the existing research regarding users’ experiences of refuges has, however, failed to distinguish the needs of teenagers (aged 13 to 18 years) from those of adult women and younger children. This study aims to redress this balance by examining the current service response provided by refuges for teenagers. Teenagers aged 16 and 17 are now incorporated within the Government definition of domestic violence and abuse in England and Wales (Home Office, 2013). This policy shift requires refuges to ensure appropriate provision for under-18s. The research investigates how teenagers experience refuges and whether refuge provision responds effectively to the needs and rights of teenagers. The findings can be used to inform policy and service development. This study is influenced by elements of feminist theory and the sociology of childhood which prioritise subjective understandings of experience and children’s agency. Data collection took place in refuges across the North West, East and West Midlands of England. It involved telephone interviews with 25 members of staff and face to face repeat interviews using participatory methods with 20 teenagers, resulting in 89 interviews. Originality resides in the detailed exploration of teenagers’ experiences across the length of their refuge stay and, in some cases, into their new homes. Interviews revealed an absence of educational, emotional and social support throughout the period of a teenager’s stay, and the picture was similar upon resettlement from the refuge. Difficulties experienced by teenagers during their refuge residence related to specific features of adolescence; refuges’ focus on safety and protectionism was particularly problematic for adolescent development. Refuge life was found to have severe negative effects on teenagers’ education. This study found that refuges are currently missing opportunities to reduce harm and promote prevention of future domestic violence and abuse by building teenagers’ resilience. This thesis argues for attitudinal change as well as relevant resources. The research highlights the shortcomings of refuges and links them to conceptions of victimhood in refuge policy and the changing nature and reduction of services. These conditions are restricting refuges’ ability to respect, protect and meet the rights of teenagers. This thesis advocates for teenagers to have greater visibility and recognition as service users in their own right.

This study aims at evaluating the possible relationship between domestic violence and generational psychic transmission. It is relevant due to the high prevalence of violence against women, and because this is actually considered a public health problem. The main objective was to investigate the possible transmission of violence from one generation to another and its probable resonance. It examines what types of violence the victims suffered and how they conceptualized it. To achieve the objectives, a qualitative fieldwork was carried out interviewing nine women victims of physical violence by intimate partners through means of Internet chat conferences. The procedure used was the Underlying Discourse Unveiling Method (UDUM). The results indicate a clear repetition of violence among family members, from the standpoint of the perpetrator and of the victim.

Volume I is divided into two papers. The first is a literature review that explored the emotional experience of professionals who work with victims of domestic violence. Twelve papers are evaluated and the evidence of negative and positive effects is presented. The second is a qualitative study with young people, their mothers and their grandmothers which explored resilience after domestic violence. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Four themes regarding the memories of domestic violence, newfound stability, acceptance and strength and continued and re-scripted attachments were found. Volume II consists of five reports. The first describes the assessment of a 13-year-old boy with low self-esteem. His needs and strengths are formulated from two approaches: cognitive-behavioural and systemic. The next discusses a behavioural intervention and single case experimental design for a 15-year-old male presenting with challenging behaviours. The third paper outlines a Person Centred Care training program for staff working with older adults. The fourth is a case study of two siblings in local authority care. To consider care-plans, a formulation is informed by the complex trauma literature. The final report was an oral presentation of an admission assessment of a young woman in a high secure hospital.

The present thesis focuses on the issue of domestic violence, describing the phenomenon from an historical, statistical and legislative point of view. In particular, after an introduction of the history and specific measures adopted to fight the issue worldwide, such as the CEDAW and DEVAW Conventions, the Beijing Conference and the Istanbul Convention, and the analysis of the related statistics of IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) and domestic homicide, the study focuses on the related legislation of China and Italy, underlining the laws of the two countries, starting from the first Marriage Law of the RPC to the last Law 69/2019 adopted in 2019 by the Italian government. The final aim is to provide the reader with the right instruments to understand and critically analyse the situation in both countries caused by the phenomenon.

Streszczenie:
The complex social issue of domestic violence is a global problem. Its multifaceted impacts are devastating to those far beyond the immediate victim and perpetrator. On the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, domestic violence incidences are frequent. While customary, reactive intervention and research initiatives in Trinidad have focused mainly on women and children, curbing this social ill has been unsuccessful. This dissertation sought to balance the domestic violence equation by exploring Trinidadian men’s perspectives on this social issue and also sought to examine their perspectives on the concept of male marginalization in relation. Using a qualitative method of inquiry, the researcher collected data from a sample of twelve Trinidadian men; seven took part in one-on-one open-ended interview sessions, and the remaining five participated in a focus group. Two central research questions guided the study: (1) What are men’s perceived reasons about why Trinidadian men perpetrate domestic violence against women in Trinidad? (2) What are men’s perspectives on male marginalization and its influence on why men perpetrate domestic violence against women in Trinidad? The study found that the participants perceived Trinidadian men’s domestic violence perpetrating habits to be a result of several factors such as: a need to be in control, feel powerful and to demand respect; men’s inability to communicate feelings and emotions; childhood socialization experiences and lack of consequences for perpetrators. Additionally, male marginalization was perceived to be a result of women’s upward mobility in education, employment and income earning capabilities. Participants perceived male marginalization as contributory to men’s perpetration of domestic violence in Trinidad.

Streszczenie:
The report of intimate violence is often taken on face value in research. With no gold standard existing, one partner?s report is often an accepted measure of violence in the relationship. This study examines the discrepancy effect among thirty-four samples from studies of heterosexual intimate violence, finding that the discrepancy in general was sizeable for men?s violence, and that different study conditions yield differing levels of discrepancy.

Streszczenie:
What should public prosecutors do when victims withdraw support for domestic violence prosecutions? This question motivates the investigation undertaken in this thesis and the answer defended herein can be summarised as follows: within the realm of justified (permissible) action, prosecutors should respond effectively; which is to say that ceteris paribus domestic violence prosecutors should respond as feminists. Thus, a central claim of this thesis is that other things being equal, domestic violence prosecutors should be feminists. This claim is intended as a provocative formulation of the proposition that domestic violence prosecutors should act for reasons generated by the value of reconstituting their States (and communities) as less patriarchal. This thesis defends that claim in two steps. Step one sets out a general theory of prosecutorial practical reasoning and step two considers the prosecution of domestic violence offences in particular. Along the way, this thesis provides an original account of the nature of prosecutorial action, the values that can be realised through such action, and the relationship between these values and the practical reasoning of criminal prosecutors. Moreover, this thesis provides original analyses of two key concepts, domestic violence and patriarchy, and explains the relevance of the latter to a proper understanding of the former. The thesis then puts the preceding insights to work in answering the motivating question stated above, providing answers both in terms of what prosecutors would be justified in doing and what prosecutors should do in order to be effective. Finally, the thesis examines and responds to some general objections that might be raised to the arguments herein, ultimately defending the role. of the domestic violence prosecutor as feminist.

Streszczenie:
Chapter One examines the literature on children’s experiences of domestic violence. The research reviewed indicates that within the same family children can have different experiences of domestic violence. Within the literature five common themes were identified; children’s experiences of abuse, responses to and effects of domestic violence, coping and sense making, impact on relationships and access to services and support. Children consistently experienced feelings of fear towards the perpetrator and a sense of responsibility for their mother’s well-being. Further qualitative research was recommended to identify different children’s resilience’s. Chapter Two explores the unique perspective of mother’s experiences of their relationship with their children within the context of domestic violence. IPA analysis indicated that domestic violence led the women to experience shame and see themselves as a ‘bad mother’. They attempted to distance themselves against this uncomfortable emotion by experiencing their child as a ‘bad child’. There were areas of resilience and agency as the women interviewed altered their parenting style and consequently their relationship with their child once leaving the relationship. Chapter Three provides reflections on the research journey. This includes the author’s experiences of methodological and ethical issues relating to conducting research with women who have experienced domestic violence, particularly with regards to the utilization of the principles of feminist and empowering methods.

Streszczenie:
There is a high rate of domestic violence worldwide and most of the victims of abuse are women. South Africa is no exception to this and it is estimated that one out of three women worldwide experiences domestic violence in her lifetime. Social work plays a role in addressing domestic violence. Therefore, the goal of the study was to explore and describe social work interventions to address domestic violence in Sedibeng District. The researcher conducted this study using a qualitative approach. The study was applied and explorative in nature and utilised an instrumental case study design. Ten social workers employed in different non-profit organisations in Sedibeng District were purposefully selected to participate in the study. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews guided by an interview schedule. Findings indicated that some social workers lacked information about domestic violence and requisite interventions, which was a challenge to service rendering to women victims of domestic violence. As, findings indicated that the commonly used strategies among the social workers include counselling, awareness, support groups and referrals. Furthermore, few participants were very elaborate about their roles in helping women victims of domestic violence. These roles are limited to; educator, facilitator and advocacy. Also, findings showed that lack of resources was a major challenge in social work interventions in addressing domestic violence. This study concludes that social workers do not have enough resources at their disposal and lack adequate information on domestic violence. As a result, they do not fully understand their roles and fail to assist women victims of domestic violence. To overcome the challenges faced by social workers when rendering services to victims of domestic violence, it is recommended that the Department of Social Development and other role players should avail enough resources. These include vehicles, office equipment such as telephones and computers, and shelters for the victims. There is also a need for the social workers to be continuously trained on domestic violence and the best intervention strategies.

In a country in which human rights feature prominently in our discourse about who we are, as well as in the South African constitutional and legal framework, so many wrongs continue to be perpetrated on women and children. However, children seem to be particularly affected by domestic violence, either physically, emotionally or socially. In order to adequately address these diverse experiences and understand what children say, an in-depth investigation into how children experience domestic violence, and what their views are, is required. The study will focus on those children who had been affected emotionally and socially in their homes. This study will make an attempt to expand on how children experience domestic violence, what the general reaction of a selected group of children, who have observed domestic violence, is and what their views of domestic violence are. Attention was given to the relevant literature as well to legislative and policy frameworks. The study employed a qualitative research method in order to obtain in-depth data from the children. Children were selected from three schools in a small Northern Cape town, which participated in the study and the schools were grouped as follows: one school from each area, which are Nonzwakazi, Sunrise and De Aar (town). Each high school had five participants. The participants‟ ages were between 12 and 17. All the participants reside at De Aar which is situated in Prixley kaSeme District about 300 kilometres from Kimberley, Northern Cape Province. Data was coded according to the themes that emerged from the study and were analysed. The results indicated that children are able to share their experiences when given the opportunity. It is further shown in the results that children view domestic violence as a wrong and that men are the sole abusers. It further indicated that children do not have confidence in the courts; they are of the view that the courts are being too lenient on the abusers and they further said that more protection orders should be issued in order to prevent domestic violence. They blame this on non-responsiveness of the police when they are called and the kind of punishments the courts impose when the abuser is brought before court. The majority of children expressed their wish to see justice being done. The study found that children are of the view that there is little support from the police and the courts. The study concluded that children, acting voluntarily and with appropriate ethical safeguards, can make a significant contribution to both describing their experiences of domestic violence, and to indicating the standard of services and other interventions that they can trust and use.
