Streszczenie:
A dog’s aggressive behavior is influenced by external and internal factors, including its psychological profile. In this study, dogs’ and owners’ personalities and the owners’ attachment style to their dogs were identified and associated with owner-reported dog aggression towards humans and animals. Forty Slovenian owners participated with their dogs, of different breeds and aggression history, sorted into three groups (non-aggressive dogs, dogs aggressive towards humans, and dogs aggressive towards animals). The owners filled out three separate questionnaires that assessed dog aggression history towards different targets, owner’s personality and degree of insecure attachment styles to dogs; namely anxious and avoidant attachment. Dog personality was characterized using a standardized dog mentality assessment test, during which the dog was exposed to nine tasks, performed outside, and dogs were scored based on behaviors they exhibited. The results indicated that dogs which were aggressive towards humans were less sociable than non-aggressive dogs and this was associated with the higher neuroticism scores of their owners. We also found that dogs which were aggressive towards strangers had owners with lower scores for anxious attachment and that dogs which were aggressive towards owners had owners with higher scores for avoidant attachment. These results imply that the psychological profiles of both a dog and its owner influence dog aggression towards humans.

The purpose of the present cross-sectional, convenience sampled study was to ascertain differences in diet and lifestyle between cat (n155) and dog (n318) owners and their pets. Average cat ownership was 6·1 (sd5) years and average cat's age was 6·9 (sd5) years. Cats were reported to be overweight (14 %), fedad libitum(87 %), given medication (11 %) and had health conditions (24 %). Cat's age was significantly and positively related to cat's weight, duration of illness, owner's BMI and some owners' dietary characteristics. Overweight in cats was significantly associated with overweight in older owners ( ≥ 60 years). Younger cat owners ( < 60 years) showed non-statistically significant trends between the owner's BMI and cat's overweight. Cat's age was inversely correlated with cat's and owner's activity levels. Dogs were owned for 5·5 (sd4) years and mean dog's age was 5·9 (sd4) years. Dogs were reported to be overweight (18 %), fedad libitum(49 %), given medication (31 %) and had health conditions (34 %). Dog's age was positively associated with duration of illness. Dog's age was inversely correlated with amount of food fed, dog's activity and owner's exercise and intake of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Dog's age was positively correlated with the owner's BMI and frequency of added fat consumption. Overweight in dogs was associated with overweight in older owners ( ≥ 60 years) and was correlated with poorer health in both the dog and the owner. Younger dog owners were more likely to have an overweight dog if they themselves were obese. Similarities were found in owner's and pet's diet and lifestyle issues with ageing. Overweight was associated with ageing, dietary, lifestyle and health issues in this sample. Older owners who were overweight had overweight pets. Strategies should be targeted towards decreasing both owner's and pet's overweight. The use of exercise and dietary interventions should be encouraged.

We previously showed (Kotrschal et al., 2009) that owner personality and human–dog relationship predicted the performance of a human–dog dyad in a practical task. Based on the same data set we presently investigate the effects of individual and social factors on the social attraction of dogs to their owners. Twenty-two male and female owners and their intact male dogs were observed during a “picture viewing” test, where we diverted the owner’s attention away from their dog whilst it was permitted to move freely around the room. Owner personality axis “neuroticism” and dog personality axis “vocal and aggressive” were, respectively, positively and negatively related to the time the dog stayed in proximity to the owner. Quality of relationship and attachment also had significant effects on this proximity. We conclude that personality and the nature of the human–dog relationship may all influence dogs’ social attraction to their owners. Given high rates of obesity and chronic disease in both people and dogs, it is important to understand how dogs and dog owners influence each other’s health, including physical activity (PA) levels. Research suggests that dog owners who walk their dogs are more likely to meet PA guidelines than those who do not, but few studies have investigated dog walking intensity or its contribution to dog owners’ total moderate-to-vigorous PA using accelerometry. Furthermore, no studies have examined the contribution of dog walking to dogs’ total PA or the relationship between dog and dog owner PA using accelerometers on dogs. The authors used accelerometers on 33 dog owner–dog pairs to investigate (a) the intensity of dog walking behavior, (b) the contribution of dog walking to dog owners’ overall moderate-to-vigorous PA and dogs’ overall PA, and (c) the correlation between dog and dog owner PA. Dog owners wore an ActiGraph accelerometer and logged all dog walking for 7 days; dogs wore a Fitbark activity monitor. On average, 64.1% (95% confidence interval [55.2, 73.1]) of daily dog walking was moderate to vigorous intensity, and dog walking accounted for 51.2% (95% confidence interval [44.1, 58.3]) of dog owners’ daily moderate-to-vigorous PA. Dog walking accounted for 41.2% (95% confidence interval [36.0, 46.4]) of dogs’ daily PA. Dog owners’ daily steps were moderately correlated (r = .54) with dogs’ daily activity points. These findings demonstrate the interdependence of dog and dog owner PA and can inform interventions that leverage the dog–owner bond to promote PA and health in both species.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of two concurrent randomized controlled interventions based on social cognitive theory to increase walking. A second purpose was to compare the efficacy of the intervention between two distinct groups: dog owners and non-dog owners. Adult dog owners ( n = 40) and non-dog owners ( n = 65) were randomized into control or intervention groups. Intervention groups received bi-weekly emails for first 4 weeks and then weekly email for the next 8 weeks targeting self-efficacy, social support, goal setting, and benefits/barriers to walking. Dog owner messages focused on dog walking while non-dog owners received general walking messages. Control groups received a 1-time email reviewing current physical activity guidelines. At 6 months, both intervention groups reported greater increases in walking and maintained these increases at 12 months. The greatest increases were seen in the dog owner intervention group. In conclusion, dog owners accumulated more walking, which may be attributed to the dog–owner relationship.

Dogs, as companion animals, have many positive effects on the health and quality of life of dog owners, if the purpose of dog ownership is not as a watchdog but as a companion animal. Dogs can encourage the owner to engage in daily walks, play, sports and other interactions, which are beneficial for physical, mental and social well-being, as has been proven by various studies. The aim of our research was to investigate the role and impact of dogs on dog owners' physical activity, dog interactions and mental health. To achieve our goal, we created an online questionnaire that was completed by 220 dog owner respondents. Our research sought to understand how dog owners develop a relationship with their companion animal, the role of the dog in their active leisure time and the impact of the dog on the owner's mental health. We used a four-part questionnaire to obtain our answers. The first part covered demographic questions, the second part focused on the respondent's dog and the time spent with him/her doing sports. In the third part, the Monash Dog-Owner (MDORS) (Cavo et al., 2016) questionnaire was used and in the last part, the Mental Health Test was used. Our research has confirmed that exercising with dogs has positive effects on humans. Walking with a dog encourages exercise and also encourages the owner to spend time outdoors. Around 26% of the people in the study exercise together and 77.3% walk with their dog. The mental health of dog owners is medium and the level of happiness is above average. These results confirm that promoting dog ownership can help to achieve the objectives of public health strategies to encourage people to be more active, to exercise or to improve quality of life and health.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables that contribute to obesity in pet dogs. The working hypothesis was that sports dog owners will better estimate their dog’s body condition and report stronger belief and control over their dogs’ feeding and exercise compared to traditional pet owners. We collected data on 171 pet owners (101 participated in canine sports) for this study. Each owner completed the Dog Owner Attitude Questionnaire. Each dog was measured for percent fat and Purina body condition scale. For the pet dogs, the median Purina body condition score was 6 (too heavy), but for the sports dogs it was 5 (ideal) (p < 0.05 different from pet dogs). The average percent fat for the pet dogs was 19.1 ± 8.6%, and for the sports dogs it was 13.8 ± 5.3% (p < 0.05 different from pet dogs). Among pet owners, 52% were able to correctly estimate their dog’s body condition. Sports dog owners were 57% correct. Pet dog owners fed approximately 60% more per day compared to sports dog owners. Pet and sports dog owners exercised their dog via walking, but sports dog owners reported more activity with the dog, while pet dog owners reported more activity than the dog did by themselves. Overall, pet and sports dog owners put a high value on their dog’s health and well-being, but better education with regard to body condition, feeding and exercise is critical to improve the pet obesity problem.

We describe the relationships between dog owners’ personality attributes (assessed via questionnaire), their behaviours and the dog’s behaviours observed during brief dog-owner and dog-stranger interactions (N = 78). Interactions comprised the owner commanding the dog to sit, and the stranger showing a ball to the restrained dog and then hiding it. Owners scoring higher on neuroticism and openness used more commands (gestural and verbal) when asking the dog to sit, and the dogs of owners higher on neuroticism obeyed with a longer latency and spent more time looking at the stranger. More extraverted owners praised their dog more, and it took longer for their dogs to look at the stranger but they spent more time looking at the stranger, whereas dogs of more agreeable owners spent more time looking at the ball. Based on these results we conclude that some aspects of owners’ personality appear to be tied to their dog’s attentional concerns. To examine the dog ownership factors characteristic to a population of dogs confiscated after a human and/ or animal-directed biting incident, we compared bite risk assessment reports of 159 confiscated dogs in the time frame 2008, 2009, 2010 (tf1) and of 215 confiscated dogs in the time frame 2020, 2021, 2022 (until mid-May; tf2). The reports were compiled by the same institute in a standardized format. We studied frequencies and chi-square pairwise comparisons (P<0.05) for 30 identified ownership factors. Overall (tf1 and tf2), 1,308 ownership factors were mentioned in the reports and reports mentioning ≥5 factors were twice as frequent in tf2 (38%) than tf1 (16%). Our data suggest that nine factors may in particular serve as a warning signal for biting incidents, as these factors were most frequently (≥15%) prevalent in the total of reported cases: having a multiple dog household, a dog reportedly roaming a neighbourhood without an owner, a dog’s care tasks being transferred, a short leash and muzzle obligation served to the owner for a dog, an isolated and/ or confined keeping of a dog, a dog owner’s (suspected) substance abuse, a dog owner’s (suspected) animal abuse, a dog owner aggressing at confiscation of the dog and a dog owner being reported on for antisocial behaviours such as intimidation. Particularly, a dog owner’s aggressive or antisocial behaviours and previous obligations to muzzle and short leash a dog (in our dataset often inappropriately adhered to by owners), may indicate that a proportion of owners of confiscated dogs, may not always be willing and/ or capable to guarantee societal safety. The results show that identification of dog ownership factors, might be useful for establishing biting incident policies and further studies should be done on preventive measures and controls.

Background: Dogs with idiopathic epilepsy experience not only the preictal and ictal seizure phases but also the postictal phase. To date, research has primarily focused on the preictal and ictal semiology and therapeutic control of ictal events. Research into the postictal phase‘s pathophysiology, as a therapeutic target and how it impacts the quality of life, is sparse across different species. Interestingly, even if anecdotally, owners report the postictal period being an impactful negative factor on their quality of life as well as their dog’s quality of life. Hypothesis/objectives: We aimed to assess the semiology and the impact of postictal signs on the quality of life of owners and dogs. Method: This observational study was carried out using surveys of owners of dogs with seizure disorders. Results: The questionnaire was filled out by 432 dog owners, 292 of whom provided complete responses that could be analysed. More than nine out of ten owners (97%) reported the presence of various postictal clinical signs. The dog’s and the owner’s quality of life was mainly affected by specific postictal signs, i.e., disorientation (dog: 31%; owner: 20%), compulsive walking (dog: 17%; owner: 22%), ataxia (dog: 12%; owner: 6%), and blindness (dog: 17%; owner: 10%). Nearly 61% of the owners felt that the severity of postictal signs was moderate or severe. Rescue antiseizure medications did not have an effect on controlling the postictal signs based on 71% of the responders. In contrast, 77% of the respondents reported that other measures such as rest, physical closeness, and a quiet and dark environment had a positive impact on the postictal phase. Conclusions and clinical importance: Overall, this survey shows that specific postictal signs are common and have a notable impact on the perceived quality of life of both dogs and their owners. According to the respondents, antiseizure medication might have no influence on the postictal phase in most cases, in contrast to other nonpharmacological measures. Further research on the management of the postictal phase is vital for improving the quality of life of dogs with seizure disorders and their owners.

The beneficial of keeping a dog and the booming Chinese pet dog market allowed many Chinese people considering owning a dog. However, how owners treat their dogs are extremely different. Some of them consider dogs as their child while others think dogs are just objects with special function. These different attitude leads to dog owners’ different consumption intention towards dog-related products and services. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the dog owner’s intention of buying or keeping a dog in China. The theory of planned behavior was used to analyzed in this thesis. The goal was to figure out the factors that influence owners’ intention of buying or keeping a dog. To investigate our purpose, the qualitative method with eleven semi-interviews were conducted in this thesis, and we analyzed the data using the method of qualitative content analysis. The results were shown from attitude, subject norm and perceived behavior, which comes from the theory of planned behavior.

Dogs have lived with us for thousands of years, so we have learned to understand one another. Dogs have been shown to synchronize their behavior with humans. Behavioral synchronization is characterizes by doing the same thing at the same time and in the same place as someone else. This synchronization is often dependent on the relationship and the emotional state of the individuals. The main aim in this study was to develop a method to test behavioral synchronization and also to investigate how this, but also other behaviors, are effect by preceding human-dog interactions. Privately owned dogs (N=21) were tested with three different treatments (play, pet or ignore). The test procedure consisted of the owner walking or standing still in a predefined pattern, while their dog was freely roaming. This study showed that dogs adapted their movement pattern to their owners. This was similar to previous studies showing that the method developed can be used to test behavioral synchronization between owner and dog. Dogs explored the test arena less after play interaction and they also tended to seek more eye contact with their owners, but the interactions did not affect how much time spent in human proximity, how much they followed them or on dogs movement pattern.

The CDC estimates that 4.7 million Americans get bitten by dogs every year. Most of these dog bite injuries involve a family-owned pet and a household member or person familiar to the dog. This capstone examines six topics: dog bite injuries and its impact on communities; new strategies for dog bite injury prevention; incidence of dog bite injuries requiring emergency room treatment among children from 2001 to 2008; dog bite injury healthcare costs; implementation of dog bite injury prevention; and legal issues and outcomes in dog bite injury. A novel approach to dog bite injury research should include a socio-ecological perspective that captures complex risk factors surrounding behavior and sociological background of dog owners before, during, and after dog bite injury incidence that is collected in a national integrated data system and translates prevention science effectively according to the CDC Injury Research Agenda.

[Truncated abstract] The Dogs and Physical Activity (DAPA) study sought to examine the relationship between dog ownership and physical activity, in particular walking. It used an ecological model to examine the socio-demographic, intrapersonal, social environmental, physical environmental and policy-related factors affecting dog owners walking with their dog. Results from this study are presented as a series of papers four which are published, in press or accepted for publication. A review of the dog ownership, health and physical activity literature and results from qualitative research of the potential barriers and motivators to dog owners being physically active with their dogs were used to develop and test an instrument for measuring dog walking behaviour. The DAPA tool was designed to measure the amount of physical activity people undertake with their dog and dog-specific individual and environmental factors affecting people walking with their dog. It was developed as a supplementary tool for the second RESIDential Environments (RESIDE) survey. RESIDE is a 5-year longitudinal study of the physical activity levels of people building homes in new housing estates in Western Australia. Findings from the baseline survey of 1813 RESIDE participants (44% dog owners) showed that dog owners were 60% more likely than non-owners to achieve sufficient physical activity and sufficient walking and almost 80% more likely than non-owners to achieve sufficient walking for recreation in the neighbourhood after controlling for demographic, intrapersonal and environmental differences. ... Findings from the DAPA study highlight the importance of the local policy and physical environment in encouraging dog walking behaviour. Perceived lack of accessible public open space (POS) and dogspecific exercise areas were identified by focus group participants as major barriers to dog owners walking with their dog. Objective measurement of the local physical environment of dog owners supported their concerns; no dog owners in this study had access to a sign-posted off-leash park [greater than or equal to] 2 acres within their neighbourhood. Furthermore, access to local POS with dog-supportive infrastructure was associated with being a regular dog walker. Overall, the results of this study draw attention to the needs of dog owners in the allocation and design of POS. The prospective component of the DAPA study enabled examination of the causal relationship between dog ownership and physical activity. After adjusting for baseline variables, dog acquisition significantly increased minutes of recreational walking within the neighbourhood by 37 minutes. However, after further adjustment for changes in baseline variables, the increase in minutes of recreational walking within the neighbourhood from dog acquisition reduced to 21 minutes and was no longer statistically significant. Increase in intention to walk appeared to mediate the relationship between dog acquisition and increased recreational walking. This study highlights a number of important physical activity benefits associated with dog ownership and provides evidence to suggest that dog walking has the potential to positively affect the proportion of the community who are sufficiently active.

Pedigree dog welfare in the United Kingdom is a controversial subject. This PhD aimed to investigate small animal veterinary surgeons’ (VS), pedigree dog breeders’ (PDB) and owners’ perceptions surrounding canine health, their roles, information acquisition and the quality of online resources available to new dog owners. Via a mixed-methods approach VS and PDB were asked about their perceptions of pedigree dog welfare using online questionnaires. Focus groups were then used to explore these parties’ opinions on advising dog owners and buyers. Dog owners were administered an online questionnaire to explore drivers of dog acquisition and sourcing of information about canine health. A further sample of dog owners provided possible internet search terms they would use to find information on how to care for a new dog. These terms were used for a scoping review to examine the quality of available information. The VS and PDB exhibited varied perceptions relating to pedigree dog breeding, inherited disease and health screening programmes. Each group considered themselves the most knowledgeable on these topics and lacked clarity on how their roles interrelated. Focus groups showed conflicting views on advising dog owners and buyers. Dog owners varied in their drivers for ownership, from whom they obtained information and the internet search terms used when looking for information online. The scoping review identified a lot of easy to understand, poor quality information. VS and PDB need to better understand and appreciate each others’ roles, perspectives and knowledge to instigate effective collaboration and improve pedigree dog health. Owners are diverse and require a multifaceted educational approach to improve knowledge. The quality of online information for owners needs to be made clear and a coordinated approach involving all stakeholders is required to enable dissemination of practical, evidence-based information on pedigree dog health.

Streszczenie:
Background: Numerous studies have found that there are many health-related benefits to owning a dog, however, this has not been investigated in a high dense Asian environment where the culture is very different to Western countries. Objectives: This study aimed at investigating 1) if dog-owners are more active than those who do not own a dog; 2) if dog-owners have higher perceived physical and mental health status compared to a sample of the population who do not own a dog; 3) are there social/environmental factors measured by the Dogs-and-Physical Activity (DAPA) tool that are associated with the perceived physical and mental health as well as physical activity (PA) habits of dog owners. Methods: A total of 102 Chinese dog-owners resident in Hong Kong were recruited to examine what factors might affect dog-owners to walk their dog regularly and hence likely to take part in more daily PA. All of these dog-owners were invited to complete a questionnaire that combined the DAPA-tool, Short-Form-12 health survey (SF-12), and the International-Physical-Activity-Questionnaire – short (IPAQ-short) and to wear an accelerometer for a week. Of the 102 recruited dog-owners, 52 had analysable SF-12 and accelerometry data that could be compared with similar data from 47 HK Chinese who did not own dogs. Linear regression was used to analyse differences between dog-owners and non-dog-owners and to examine social/environmental factors that contributed to physical component score (PCS) and mental component score (MCS) and accrued PA of the dog-owners; their living status, gender, age, Body Mass Index (BMI), income, education level and work status were adjusted during the analysis. Result: Compared to those without dogs, dog-owners were found to have higher PCS scores (P<0.001), involved in more moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA, P=0.02) and overall PA (OVPA, P<0.001) as measured by objective accelerometry; while no significant differences were seen in MCS, nor MVPA or OVPA as measured by the self-reported IPAQ. “Owning a dog adds to my happiness” was associated with having higher PCS (P=0.04); whilst “Trees and shrubs for dogs to sniff” (P=0.02), “Sitting areas with benches” (P=0.06) and “My enjoyment of being outdoors” (P=0.01) were positively related to MVPA as measured by IPAQ, whilst “My dog would be unfriendly or difficult to control” (P=0.02) was negatively related to IPAQ MVPA. Furthermore, “Signs to say if dogs are permitted” (P=0.03), “Trees and shrubs for dogs to sniff” (P=0.02), “The fact that I feel safe when walking with my dog” (P=0.02) and “It would keep my dog healthy” (P=0.04) were found to be positively related to OVPA as measure by IPAQ, whilst “My family commitments” (P=0.03) and “It would stop me feeling guilty” (P=0.03) were found to be negative related to IPAQ OVPA. No variables were significantly related to MCS among the dog-owners. Conclusion: Dog-ownership is associated with Hong Kong owners having a more active lifestyle and is related to higher perceived physical, but not mental health. A small number of social and physical factors appear important in providing a supportive environment that can help enhance the health benefits of dog-ownership.

Dog parks are the fastest growing type of park in U.S. cities; however, their increasing popularity has been met with increasing criticism of pets in public space. Dogs have shown to be a deep source of neighborhood conflict, and the provision of dog parks, or off-leash areas, is a seemingly intractable controversy for city officials. In 2003, Portland, Oregon established a network of 33 off-leash areas which remains the second largest both in count and per capita in the country. The purpose of my research is to understand the public debate over off leash dogs during the establishment of Portland's off-leash area network, and how dog parks relate to processes of demographic change. The analysis involved two phases. First, I conducted a thematic analysis of editorial perspectives published in the major local newspaper. Second, I conducted an exploratory spatial analysis of the distribution of Portland's off-leash areas and patterns of racial and economic change throughout the city from 2000 to 2015. Central to the debate are conflicting notions of responsible pet ownership. The notions of responsibility employed in the debate are primarily personal, yet the findings from my exploratory analysis of the relationship between dog parks and demographic change suggest a need to attend to notions of public responsibility. I recommend that future research, discussion, representations, and policy regarding dog parks consider the consequences of off-leash areas as amenities within the changing neighborhoods in which they exist.

Streszczenie:
Dog relinquishment or ‘getting rid of the dog’ is common practice in Australia and other countries where dogs are kept as pets. Each year thousands of dogs are relinquished for a variety of reasons. While losing a pet through death can be as devastating for some people as the death of a loved human, little is known about the human impact of losing a dog through relinquishment. This qualitative study sought to explore the experience of dog relinquishment from the perspectives of a Western Australian sample of 21 relinquishers, 10 adults who had experienced dog relinquishment in childhood and 15 animal welfare workers. Data, collected via semistructured interviews, were transcribed verbatim and analysed in accord with Straussian grounded theory methodology, an inductive, interpretative methodology, utilising the constant comparative method. The substantive grounded theory of ‘protective-restoring to maintain self integrity in the face of a self disturbing experience’ that was generated from an interpretative analysis of the data, describes the human experience of dog relinquishment as one of psychological, social and moral conflicts that challenged participants self and social image. The theory proposes that those who experience dog relinquishment personally or professionally experience a disturbed self integrity (i.e., a sense of cognitive and emotional unease). Five conditions, identified as threats to self integrity, were found to contribute to participants’ sense of unease, namely the culture of relinquishment, a crisis of conscience, a fear of losing face, losing faith and losing the dog. Variation in participants’ experience was accounted for by individual and social conditions that influenced the type, intensity, frequency and duration of their unease. Participants’ experience of dog relinquishment was characterised by one or more of three types of unease, namely, cognitive dissonance, psychological stress and grief, which were dealt with through a process identified as protective-restoring. The continuous four phase process of protective-restoring involved recognition, identification, assessment and counteraction of threats to self integrity. Its aim was to protect participants from further threats and to restore their self integrity. Six types of strategies were identified that participants employed during the counteracting phase of the protective-restoring process, namely, self enhancing, blaming, impact reducing, emotional management, avoiding and blocking. Strategies employed were not always successful and in some circumstances increased rather than reduced the unease of participants. Further the strategies sometimes contributed to the unease of others. These findings indicate that the human experience of dog relinquishment is multidimensional and complex. Further, given its potential to detrimentally impact the mental health and wellbeing of large numbers of adults and children, dog relinquishment is an experience that should not be trivialised or ignored. As well as contributing to the human-animal interaction body of knowledge, the substantive theory that has emerged from this research could be used to inform the development of a screening tool to identify those who are likely to be negatively impacted by dog relinquishment. Further, the theory could also be used to inform the development of interventions that could be used to assist adults and children to deal with the negative impact of dog relinquishment.

Streszczenie:
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária
ABSTRACT - The use of medical cannabis in veterinary species is an area of growing interest, largely due to the therapeutic benefits observed in human medicine and the ever-closer bond between humans and their pets. Yet, there is very little research on the effects of cannabis in animals and the legal status for veterinary drugs containing cannabis is unclear. Veterinarians play a pivotal role in advising tutors, making it important to characterize the panorama of the Portuguese veterinary profession in the face of these new therapies. This study used three anonymous online surveys to evaluate the attitudes, beliefs and knowledge about medical cannabis among veterinary physicians, veterinary students and owners of dogs with canine atopic dermatitis (CAD). A secondary goal was to recruit patients for a future clinical trial on the use of cannabis as an adjunctive therapy to CAD. There were 138 responses on the veterinarians’ survey, 331 on the students’ survey and 358 on the atopic dog owners’ survey. Veterinarians didn’t feel very knowledgeable concerning the differences between marijuana and hemp or the toxic effects of both marijuana and hemp, but most felt confident about the therapeutic uses of hemp. Most vets and students believed cannabis could be useful in veterinary medicine, while owners were unsure. Over 60% of veterinarians claimed to have experience with medical cannabis in dogs, and the conditions for which they prescribed it the most were chronic pain, anxiety and inflammation. Only 6% of the owners had already purchased a cannabis product for their pet, most frequently for a dermatological condition, anxiety or chronic pain. Of those, most said they had acquired the product on the internet and the top reason for purchase was that it was prescribed by a vet. Both owners and vets perceived the products as moderately or highly effective and only 10% reported mild side effects. Over half of the veterinarians had a low level of concern regarding the safety and side effects of cannabis, while most owners were moderate or highly concerned. Both veterinarians and students were highly supportive of veterinary training and research on medical cannabis. 204 emails were collected from owners potentially interested in participating on the clinical trial on the use of cannabis in CAD. Most participants agreed that medical cannabis may offer benefits in veterinary medicine and were supportive of further clinical research. Still, clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of cannabis in veterinary species are urgently needed. It is imperative that veterinarians and students receive formal training on medical cannabis to properly advise their clients.

Assistive mobility aids play an important role in the overall well-being, mobility, and activity of animals with neurological and/or orthopaedic impairments. The user experience relates not only to the pet owner, but also to the animal using it. Animals cannot express how they feel when using an assistive mobility aid, so the owner's observation of the animal is of great importance in this case. In this study the experiences of users of mobility aids for dogs were investigated using a questionnaire. All pet owners invited to participate had received a mobility aid (orthosis, prosthesis, or wheelchair) made by us for their pets in the past year. Of fifteen pet owners invited, eight dog owners responded to the questionnaire. The aids used were orthosis (25%), prosthesis (50%) and wheelchair (25%). Our survey shows that most owners (5/8) believe that assistive devices have a very positive impact on their dog’s life. To improve the use of mobility aids in animals, future research should focus on making them more accessible. To restore normal limb function after injury, chronic disease or amputation, good collaboration between veterinarians, technicians (orthotists/prosthetists) and owners based on scientific evidence should be encouraged. Owning a dog brings with it a multitude of responsibilities, chief among them being the essential task of dedicating ample time to training [1]. While the specific time commitment may vary, effective training necessitates steadfast dedication and effort. Unfortunately, many dog owners struggle to allocate sufficient time, leading to untrained canine behavior [2]. Research indicates that approximately 75% of dogs worldwide lack proper training. Effective training serves as the bedrock of a harmonious human-canine relationship, fostering mutual understanding and safety [3]. Despite its paramount importance, training demands patience, consistency, and perseverance, qualities often underestimated by dog owners. Addressing this issue requires a shift in owners' perspectives, underscoring the significance of prioritizing training through professional guidance and obedience classes. Ultimately, investing in training not only enhances the quality of life for dogs but also strengthens the bond between owners and their cherished companions, showcasing the dedication necessary to ensure canine well-being in an ever-changing world.

This study was conducted in selected provinces of Bicol Region from April 2015 to May 2015 to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of dog owners regarding rabies and dog bites. A purposive sampling was used in selecting the respondents of the study. Frequencies were tabulated for all variables. Of the 1,200 respondents, 2,193 dogs were recorded making a 2:1 ratio of dogs to householders in this particular study. Among these dogs 58% were vaccinated against rabies. The majority of the ones taking care of the dogs were female (57.3%) but the primary owner (62.9%) was the head of the family. Only 34.7% of the respondents knew that it is their duty to get their pets vaccinated against rabies. Around one-fourth (20.7%) admitted that someone in their household had been bitten by a dog but most respondents (62.5%) did nothing to the dog. The majority (57.7%) of the bite victims were youths (1-14 years old) and almost all (82.7%) of the wound bites were washed with soap and water. Television (44.9%) was the primary source of knowledge about rabies. The majority of participants (67.3%) said that humans are the main end-hosts that can be infected with rabies. Salivation or drooling (42.7%) and craziness (34.2%) were the main signs cited as behaviour of rabid dogs while craziness (40.2%) and hydrophobia or fear of water (25.4%) were cited for rabid humans. Most (33.9%) do not know the source of rabies but the majority (61.8%) believe that vaccination is the main preventive measure against rabies. The majority of participants (63%) reported that the local ordinances regarding rabies in their locality is about the Local Anti-Rabies Act and almost all (93.2%) admitted that vaccination is the most common anti-rabies program of the government.

Streszczenie:
This report summarizes results from five seasons, 2015?2019, of Golden Gate National Recreation Area?s western snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus nivosus) monitoring program. The goals of our monitoring program are to estimate trends in the overwintering snowy plover population size and distribution, as well as to track potential disturbance threats to snowy plovers. We surveyed Ocean Beach and Crissy Field for snowy plovers twice a week every other week, from 01-July 2015 to 13-May 2020. During each of the five years, we observed snowy plover counts that were higher than long-term average counts calculated from 1994 to 2019 on Ocean Beach, with a record maximum count of 106 plovers in 2015. We also observed higher-than-average numbers of snowy plovers on Crissy Field, ranging from a maximum count of six in 2017 to a record maximum count of 12 in 2019. Additional field seasons and analyses are necessary to determine population trends for these two beaches. Following recent use patterns at Ocean Beach, snowy plovers were primarily observed in the wider area of beach between Lawton and Lincoln streets. At Crissy Field, snowy plovers were only found in the Wildlife Protection Area to the east of the US Coast Guard pier. Leash non-compliance rates at Ocean Beach remain high, approaching 80% of dogs observed unleashed in the Snowy Plover Protection Area. In contrast, many fewer dogs?mostly on leash?were observed in the Wildlife Protection Area at Crissy Field, where the area is smaller and where National Park Service (NPS) staff installed protective fencing, entrance gates, and signage in 2010. Dog owners were often observed approaching Crissy Field?s fenced Wildlife Protection Area but turning back at the fence without entering. Continued low levels of compliance with leash regulations at Ocean Beach indicate a need to enhance outreach and enforcement actions related to off-leash dog walking.

Streszczenie:
The international community is increasingly aware that adopting laws, regulations, and mechanisms to gather and exchange information about “beneficial owners” (BOs) is crucial for combating tax evasion, money laundering, corruption, and the financing of terrorism. This paper explains the concept of beneficial owner, describes the standards in this area that countries should commit to, and presents the ratings achieved under the FATF and GF evaluations by each one of the 26 Inter-American Development Bank borrowing member countries regarding their beneficial ownership laws and regulations. Moreover, it analyzes the definitions of beneficial ownership currently in use in these 26 countries. In Latin America and the Caribbean, regulation in this area is very uneven. Although most countries have in place regulations defining the concept of beneficial ownership, thesedefinitions do not always comply with international standards. In general, all of the countries have room to improve their regulations and, especially, their compliance in practice.
