Streszczenie:
This work looks at three contemporary issues in personnel sharing in mission using a case study methodology. The issues are: the value of short-term and long-term missionary appointments and an examination of the relative strengths and weaknesses of both kinds of appointment; the method of preparing people for missionary service, with particular examination of the CWM Training In Mission (TIM) programme; and the issue of what should happen when a missionary appointment must be terminated before the contracted period. For each is·sue background material and a case study are presented followed by a series of questions which form the basis of a group discussion on the case. Each case was used with a group and the ensuing discussion is reported so that the reader can gauge if the study has been successful. The case study method is discussed in some detail since the methodology is crucial to the presentation of this work. The issues that arise from the whole process are also treated in a separate chapter, although the purpose of the method is to raise the issues, more than to give definitive results. Some knowledge about CWM is assumed, although there are sections which help the reader understand the uniqueness of the organisation. An underlying assumption throughout the work is that there is still a place for missionaries in the work of the church today.

Efforts to understand the determination of needs of new weapon systems must take into account inputs and actions beyond the formally documented requirements generation process. This study analyzes three recent historical cases of fighter aircraft development to identify decisions made independently from the documented requirements process, about the need for new systems. The primary inputs to those decisions are identified, and a qualitative model for understanding the undocumented inputs, and their role in determining weapon system needs, is presented. By analyzing data across the cases, which span a period of significant change in fighter design, the concept of a Dominant Mission Emphasis (DME) is introduced. The DME is defined as that mission which receives the most emphasis from the majority of participants in the needs determination process, and which the majority of other missions support, either directly or indirectly. It emerges when enough participants become convinced that it is appropriate to address the military, economic, political, social, and other needs that exist, and it serves as a means for bounding the intractable array of possibilities for weapon system needs. The convincing of participants occurs primarily through a social process, not a technical or an authoritative one. Over time, as conditions change, the appropriateness of the DME will decrease. The appropriateness over time can be modeled with a bell-shaped curve. Cues are identified which suggest the need to re-examine the DME.
(cont.) The strength of a DME can be measured by qualitative and quantitative indicators, including such things as verbal statements, military doctrine, intellectual and academic writings, organization within the military, resources committed, and promotion decisions. These indicators can also be used as controls to strengthen or weaken a DME in response to the perception of its appropriateness for existing conditions. The DME is constantly being questioned and challenged by individuals who seek to convince others that its appropriateness is not sufficient for existing conditions. Alternative missions are proposed and advocated as new DMEs. The roles of the primary means for convincing participants of the appropriateness of a DME are presented.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the 51st (Highland) division over the course of the First World War. Underpinning the study is an analysis of both change and continuity, at home and overseas, and the performance of the division as a fighting unit. The key themes identified for study have been training, esprit de corps, recruitment and reinforcement, and battle performance. Through the investigation of the key themes, other important characteristics have been analysed, such as command and control, organisation, and the level of centralisation in both the formation and in the wider Army. Key questions in the research apply to both divisional study and to wider academic understanding of the First World War. The thesis considers a number of themes that have been neglected by historians old and new, and brings into sharp focus some areas of research that may have produced inaccurate assumptions. In addition, a substantial range and quantity of primary sources have been utilised, many unexplored until now. The selection of the 51st (Highland) Division for study was based on a number of criteria. (Highland) Division experiences were both unique and not unique. In some areas it was a very individual formation, but in other areas or at particular times of the war it was not.

Streszczenie:
Since the 1980s the locus of manufacturing and some services have moved to countries of the Global South. Liberalization of trade and investment has added two billion people to world labour supply and brought workers everywhere into intense competition with each other. Under orthodox neoliberal and neoclassical approaches free trade and open investment should benefit all countries and lead to convergence. However considerable differences in wages and working hours exist between workers of the Global North and those of the Global South. The organising question for the thesis is why workers in different countries but the same industries get different wages. Empirical evidence reviewed in the thesis shows that productivity does not explain these wage differences and that workers in some parts of the South are more productive than workers in the North. Part of the thesis examines the usefulness of explanations drawn from Marxist, institutionalist and global commodity chain approaches. There is a long established argument in Marxist and neo-Marxist writings that differences between North and South result from imperialism and the exercise of power. This is the starting point to review ways of understanding divisions between workers as the outcome of a global class structure. In turn, a fault line is postulated between productive and unproductive labour that largely replicates the division between the Global North and the Global South. Workers and their organizations need shared actions if they are to resist global competition and wage disparities. Solidarity has been the clarion of progressive movements from the Internationals of the early C19th through to the current Global Unions and International Confederation of Trade Unions (ICTU). The thesis examines how nationalism and particular interests have undermined solidarity and reviews the major implications for current efforts to establish and advance a global labour position.

This project offers a resource for the training of lay preachers from the first world who have participated in mission trips to the developing world of El Salvador. The project further enhances the experience of the mission trip by giving mission participants the tools to proclaim the gospel in light of their mission experience. Chapter One explores the unique political, economic, religious and cultural realities of the mission territory of El Salvador. Chapter Two examines the spiritual history of the missionaries themselves within the culture of the United States, exploring the various spiritual movements that have shaped their nation. Liberation Theology and its impact on the people of El Salvador and the United States will be discussed in Chapter Three. Its profound impact on lay spirituality and their understanding of the scriptures will also be examined. Chapter Four outlines four preparation meetings for missionaries as well as the spiritual agenda for the mission trip to El Salvador. In Chapter Five, eleven key points for effective preaching will be offered in a description of a workshop to be given to returning missionaries to enable them to proclaim what they have seen and heard on their mission trip. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the effectiveness of this workshop as well as sample homilies will also be presented in this chapter. The project concludes with reflections on the benefits of missionary preaching for both the missionaries and their sponsoring communities.

As the complexity and influence of engineering systems in modern society increases, so too does their potential to create counterintuitive and catastrophic accidents. Increasingly, the accidents encountered in these systems are defying the linearized notions of accident causality that-though developed for the simpler engineered systems of the past-are prevalently used for accident prevention today. In this dissertation, an alternative approach to accident prevention based on systems theory-the Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) and STAMP-based hazard analysis (STPA)-is augmented with the notion of using phase space attractors to evaluate how well STAMP safety control structures enforce system safety constraints. Phase space attractors are mathematical results that emerge from the behavior of systems with dynamic structures that draw or constrain these systems to specific regions of their phase space in spite of a range of conditions. Accordingly, the goal in using this notion for the evaluation of safety constraint enforcement is to identify and analyze the attractors produced by a safety control structure to determine if it will adequately "attract" the system to safe states in spite of a range of unforeseeable conditions. Support for this approach to evaluating STAMP safety control structures is provided through the study of a safety control structure in an existing complex, socio-technical system. This case study is focused on a safety control process-referred to as Procedure Rework-used in Space Shuttle Mission Control to update procedures during in-flight operations as they are invalidated by changes in the state of the Space Shuttle and its environment.
(cont.) Simulation models of procedure rework are developed through physical and human factors principles and calibrated with data from five Space Shuttle missions; producing simulation results with deviations from the historical data that are-as characterized by Theil Inequality Statistics-small and primarily due to cycles and noise that are not relevant to the models' purpose. The models are used to analyze the attractor produced by the Procedure Rework Process across varied conditions, including a notional crewed spacecraft mission to a distant celestial body. A detrimental effect in the process is identified-and shown to be potentially far more severe than light delay on a mission to a distant celestial body-and approaches to mitigating the effect are explored. Finally, the analysis conducted is described as a generalizeable process for using phase space attractors to evaluate system safety constraint enforcement in engineering systems.

Procurement, consolidation, international transportation, custom clearance and distribution are the main global logistics steps of an integrated supply chain. Business-to-business e-commerce can significantly alter the logistics of business supply chains, with significant implications for the geography, modal structure and values of transportation services such as speed, reliability, visibility and transparency. Traditional procurement systems happen via complex, paper-intensive, approval and order process with high administrative cost and low economies of scale. These processes may include re-keying of information, lengthy approval cycles, a substantial involvement of financial and administrative resources, lack of transparency in the bidding process which ultimately would limit the benefits of volume procurement contracts and result in delays to end-users, i.e. losing efficiencies and precious time in a humanitarian relief program. The purpose of the study within the Transportation and Logistics Division of The World Food Programme is to answer the following question: how can The World Food Programme leverage the internet as a global buyer that connects suppliers and service providers in a digital interactive base? The aim of the study is to pin-point which transactions can in the future be made with higher visibility and with a better management of information in order to take advantage of volume procurement contracts, integrate the process and reduce the cost of each procurement transaction. Determining a best practice with a new process and its benefits is the objective.

Streszczenie:
Although descriptions of civilian experience during the Second World War tend to stress concepts of unity and the nation 'pulling together', much literature ofthe period repeatedly suggests division and distrust, and fears of an 'enemy within' that can be seen directly in the numerous fifth columnist plotlines and more indirectly through stories of personal treachery and duplicity. Here the work of a number of authors writing during World War II is examined, with close comparison of how themes of betrayal and mistrust are woven into their texts. This is placed in context through consideration both of government propaganda warning citizens of the dangers of spies and fifth columnists during the war and social fracturings along gender, class and political lines that were already in existence when war began. The 'enemy within' motif exists in a number of forms and discussion of this is extended to consider, for example, contemporary concerns that the increasing authoritarianism of the British government meant the country was moving towards the fascism it had gone to war to defeat, presentations of the home as an enemy space, and repeated depictions of fragmented identity and trauma that suggest the enemy also exists within the individual psyche.

Genetic testing companies have come under fire lately for an array of reasons. Many direct-to-consumer outfits are being challenged by the federal regulatory authorities, by the physicians' community and by the public itself. The desire to derive utility from the existing mass of genetic research is only outpaced by the sheer amount of new information being added to our understanding daily. These genetic testing companies are simultaneously trying to apply the existing knowledge, build a base for further study and be credible, going concerns from a business perspective. It is a worthy but difficult objective. The direct-to-consumer genetic initiatives face resistance from physicians who are the traditional intermediaries between medical insight and application of this insight. The companies also face a strong adversary in a government that wants to protect its constituents from fraudulent marketing claims and misinformation. Recent, informal studies have also exposed flaws in the product offerings and delivery of information by these companies. Finally, these are all for-profit entities which are struggling to become profitable. The objective of this thesis is to identify an attractive consumer base and opportunity that would allow for successful deployment of genetic diagnostic capability. I postulate that the success of a direct-to-consumer company would depend on finding a customer that values the genetic insight deeply and is able to take action from such insight. Based on those two fundamental criteria-perceived value and actionable utility-I build a profile of place, person and disease to test my hypothesis. Driven by the findings of my research, I anchored my hypothesis around an Indian consumer who pays for health care out-of-pocket, is vulnerable to certain genetic diseases due to narrow, endogamous customs and has grown up in a culture of arranged marriages. If this individual's religious and moral code forbids early termination of pregnancy or if financial and logistical circumstances make abortion impossible, I posit the desire for this cohort to use pre-marital genetic testing will increase. My research showed that people born in India and people who had considered arranged marriage as a viable option (the two groups overlapped but not completely) did display a greater likelihood of using genetic tests at the pre-marital and pre-natal stage to make informed decisions about family planning. These groups also showed a greater inclination towards early termination of pregnancy as well as reconsidering partner choice based on the outcome of genetic testing. However, the data also showed that those groups that did not believe in abortion still did not preferentially want a pre-marital genetic test.

Streszczenie:
This is a study of Japanese folding screens decorated with a variety of cartographic imagery of European origin. The central argument of this work is that Japanese cartographic namban screens made during the period considered in this dissertation can assist us to further understand the marked Christian eschatological character of the pictorial programmes decorating these screens, reflecting European contemporary hopes about the messianic coming of a universal Christian King, and about the Christian future of Japan at the onset of Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada's ban against Christianity (1614). By taking into account the use of folding screens as diplomatic gifts, this research seeks to argue that the hybridity of namban cartographic screens reveals as much about the expectation of Jesuit missionaries towards the evangelization of the Japanese archipelago as they did about how Japanese artists and observers understood European cartographic knowledge within a pre-existing local ritual use of maps and cartography. This dissertation is composed of four chapters. In chapter one I describe the material qualities of folding screens, the architectural environments in which they were displayed, and how the practice of donating folding screens as diplomatic gifts was eventually co-opted by the Jesuit missionaries operating in Japan. Chapter two is a discussion on the organization and the passage of the first Japanese diplomatic mission in Europe and the role that European cartography and geographical allegories played in this event. In chapter three I will examine the dissemination of Christian sacred images in Japan and the establishment of a Jesuit school to train Japanese artists in western-style painting. Chapter four unpacks the discussion developed in the preceding chapters and focuses on two specific pairs of namban cartographic screens - the Map of the World and Twenty-Eight Cities (today at the Imperial Household Agency in Tokyo) and the Battle of Lepanto and World Map (today at the Kosetsu Museum in Kobe) - for which I propose a new interpretation.

The Joint Precision Airdrop System (JPADS) exists to execute logistical resupply operations using fixed and rotary wing air in a safe, effective and precise manner in order to deliver supplies and equipment to intended recipients at multiple locations on a single mission in hostile or restricted terrain. In the U.S. Military's Current Operating Environment (COE) in locations all over the world, Soldiers find themselves operating in areas that are either too arduous to move to by ground or where the threat is elevated to the point where the unit must maneuver to a particular location by air in order to increase unit survivability, maintain the element of surprise and execute timely operations. Current and previous logistical resupply platforms and systems fail to meet these requirements due to inaccuracies and ineffectiveness, increased enemy capabilities to effect friendly supply lines and increased threats to low flying aircraft, which has an immediate impact on mission accomplishment. Current force structure requires a system that can operate in a dynamic and mercurial environment in order to rapidly adjust to changes on the ground, which is a necessity. The objective of this research thesis is to provide a thorough analysis of the JPADS through a rich stakeholder analysis of the system and a complete study of the JPADS system architecture. This will allow further investigation using the Design Structure Matrix (DSM), which is a system engineering methodology and tool utilized to provide improvement recommendations to project sponsors working on the system. This research thesis will argue that there are two critical components vital to the success of the JPADS, which include an integrated Wind Data Sensor that can provide real-time wind updates to the JPADS and a Terrain Avoidance Feature to ensure success in challenging terrain such as we find our military currently operating in. Instrumental to the success of the JPADS is developing a system that takes full advantage of tip of the spear technology through a modular system capable of adapting to both the environment and the mission. This research thesis will apply systems architecture and DSM analysis to the JPADS in order to fully analyze the system and illustrate why the incorporation of both the Wind Data Sensor and the Terrain Avoidance Feature is a necessity to ensure operational success of the system.

There is an imbalance of literature on church, mission, and unity. It has often been argued the three are so close they can no longer be understood separately; scholars began to use the term ‘mission and unity’ or ‘mission in unity’. However, few, if any, works approach individual national or denominational church history in this comprehensive way. This study is an attempt to fill the gap on the issue of unity in Korean Christianity, particularly the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK).  The PCK has responded to various foreign challenges in an indigenous way, on the one hand, and has struggled with its own indigenous problems, both ecclesiastical and socio-political, on the other. This study is to examine the process of indigenisation of the issue of unity in the PCK. Centring on the PCK, there have been four simultaneous histories: the church history of the PCK, the mission history of the missions, both expatriate and indigenous, and the ecumenical movement; and the interaction between these histories is indispensable to understand the issue of unity.  Through various ecclesiastical and socio-political challenges, the ecumenicity of the PCK continues to grow, although slowly and incompletely, and thus the PCK is expected to play a role of a bridge-builder, as a divided unifier, in the polarised church and the conflict ridden world.

The World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations food agency, has recently acquired the difficult task of transporting aid into the Somali region of Ethiopia. The political instability, rebel activity, ethnic tensions, and poor infrastructure in the area endanger and delay the flow of commodities through the WFP's supply chain. In this thesis, we explore and analyze the role that these threats play in the WFP's aid distribution in the Somali region. Specifically, we measure the impact of insecurity in the WFP's distribution system, study the current methods that the WFP employs to mitigate risks, and investigate possible precautionary technologies to improve security in this resource constrained environment. Our research suggests that while many tools can enhance security, the organizational measures aiming to increase responsibility and trust between all involved supply chain stakeholders ultimately prove to have a stronger impact on the overall safety of aid-distribution. Finally, though our research has focused mainly on the WFP, we believe that all similarly situated humanitarian organizations will find our analysis applicable.

Martin Heidegger employs in Being and time´s section 14 the term depriving the world of its worldhood to characterize the stance adopted by the tradition of philosophy to think about the beings. In this posture, the world is interpreted as being present at hand, based on a privilege of the cognitive mode of relationship with them. Our aim, however, is not restricted to an elucidation of this mode of thinking the world depriving it indicated by Heidegger, but investigate why this mode predominates in philosophy as a whole, in the previous ontology. From the realization that the cognitive attitude has its roots and reasons in an essential way of being that ourselves are, of Dasein, called being-in-theworld, we pose the question: in what sense Heidegger uses the term depriving the world to characterize an approach to the being based on being-in-the world? Through the investigation of issues in Being and time´s division one, we emphasize this question, assuming that it affects the main issue of this Heidegger´s text, the question of the meaning of being.

Streszczenie:
This thesis deals with the complex question of how global Christian mission organizations must learn to function, especially the Wycliffe Global Alliance (WGA). I summarize how the Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) began in 1942 as the resourcing organization for the Summer Institute of Linguistics (now called SIL International) and how their mutual founder, American William Cameron Townsend, was influenced by Western mission strategy and conservative evangelical theology. The changing global context is impacting how the missio Dei takes place and this is influencing how mission agencies interact with each other and the church worldwide. This is leading to new paradigms of how mission is conceptualized around the world. The thesis outlines how the changing global context has forced Wycliffe to reevaluate its place in the world because, half a century after its formation, the church has new homes in the global South and East. It follows that as a Western mission, Western resources have decreased and this has shaped how Wycliffe Bible Translators (International) has now become Wycliffe Global Alliance (WGA). However, this goes beyond a mere change of name and has resulted in a type of structure that enables it to better engage with the church worldwide. The thesis also examines the complexity of contextualization in the global environment, noting how different languages and cultures are involved, each with its own rules and subtleties. I show how the shift of the centre of gravity of the church to the global South and East presents new theological challenges for the Bible translation effort and these directly impact WGA. There are many missiological implications for WGA that come from influences in church history regarding the importance of language, the translatability of the gospel, the history of Bible translation and how missional reflection is necessary in various situations. These merge together to provide new implications which are influenced by globalization for mission agencies such as WGA. The thesis also emphasises that WGA is a global mission movement, so I have identified methods of leadership development and structure, all of which are critical to WGA’s effectiveness and involvement in the missio Dei. I show that forming global mission leaders is unique and complex, and how the leaders must embrace a wide variety of qualities, skills and capabilities, especially in responding to greater cultural diversity. Since most leadership principles are culturally bound, this creates obstacles in cross-cultural situations. Therefore, I emphasize that a successful multicultural organization like WGA must learn to focus on both worldwide and local objectives. The thesis outlines how theological, missiological, cultural, contextual and leadership values converge and therefore reshape a mission movement like WGA. My conclusion is that none of these influences can be ignored – all are relevant. Each must be reflected upon in order to provide directions for WGA as it seeks to be faithful to its vision and serve the global church.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: World Class Manufacturing (WCM) was first introduced into Nampak in 1990, and since then, there have been three attempts by the organisation to re-implement WCM in the organisation. In the last 23 years, 1990-2013, no formal assessment has been done with regard to evaluating whether the introduction of WCM was effective or not in the organisation, according to the goals and objectives set when the projects were initially implemented. The aim of this research report was to evaluate whether the implementation of WCM was effective in the Nampak Plastic Rigids (PRs) clusters and the study focused on only three operations namely; Nampak Tubes, Closures and Megapak. Secondly, the research aimed to establish what elements were required to successfully implement and sustain WCM in an organisation. Through the research it was established that in order to implement and sustain WCM successfully the following elements are required; strategy alignment, strategy implementation or execution, benchmarking, employee involvement, change management and the correct selection of continuous improvement tools and tactics. The three operations selected in the study were then evaluated against these elements through a survey, in order to gauge their alignment against each element. The research found that none of the three operations met the ideal state of 85 per cent in aligning themselves to the six elements. Nampak Tubes was the only operation that came close to the required ideal level of 85 per cent, as the operation had re-implemented WCM in 2011 and as a result, the operations performance in terms of the selected KPIs was better than that of the other two. However, on average none of the three operations reached the 85 per cent ideal range. This was an indication that the PRs were not aligned to the required six elements in their attempt to implement WCM, and despite the three previous attempts, success had not been achieved. The elements could prove complex as regards their comprehension and implementation as guided by the literature review and research, thus leadership should take careful note of the relationship between all of them. The organisational leadership is responsible for ensuring that the WCM strategy is driven centrally and adopted by all the stakeholders in the organisation, as all the elements require a leadership intervention. World Class Manufacturing is more than a concept or a project; it is a philosophy which should be treated as a way of life, if organisations are to be successful in being competitive.

This dissertation examines the creation and initial use of the precision bombing system employed by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II in the opening phase of the Combined Bomber Offensive against Germany. It presents the system as distinctly sociotechnical, constructed of interdependent specially trained humans-the pilot, navigator, and bombardier-purpose-built automated machines-the Norden bombsight and the Minneapolis- Honeywell C-1 Autopilot-and the high-altitude, daylight bombing (HADPB) doctrine, all of which mutually shaped each other's creation and use. The first part of the study establishes the relationship between the HADPB doctrine, the humans, and the machines, presenting the bombardment system as a three-level socio-technical system designed for optimum control at all levels. It describes the elements at each level, their design for use as a system, how they initially employed the system, and how their actions caused a revision of the HADPB doctrine, in the process redefining precision from a system perspective and significantly changing the system's social structure. The second part of the study examines the actions performed by the three principal sociotechnical members the bomber crew, and determines the specific tasks and roles accomplished both the humans and machines within the system. It establishes what the crewmembers did, analyzing their professional construct, the machines that shaped their professional identities, how the humans and machines, through distinct processes of shared control and cognition, accomplished the tasks associated with precision bombing-flying, navigating, and bombingand how the HADPB doctrine affected their actions. It focuses on how technology, by granting varying levels of control over the task of flying the aircraft, created conflict over control of the system itself, and how command, a uniquely military function granted organizationally and doctrinally to the pilot, served as arbiter of that conflict. This study establishes a perspective for the future study aerial combat systems, and a better understanding of the organizational and social impact of the increased use of automation in those systems, particularly relevant to the discussion surrounding the expanded use of remotely piloted aircraft by the United States Air Force in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Streszczenie:
"Christian Slavery" shows how Protestant missionaries in the early modern Atlantic World developed a new vision for slavery that integrated Christianity with human bondage. Quaker, Anglican, and Moravian missionaries arrived in the Caribbean intending to "convert" enslaved Africans to Christianity, but their actions formed only one part of a dialogue that engaged ideas about family, kinship, sex, and language. Enslaved people perceived these newcomers alternately as advocates, enemies, interlopers, and powerful spiritual practitioners, and they sought to utilize their presence for pragmatic, political, and religious reasons. Protestant slave owners fiercely guarded their Christian rituals from non-white outsiders and rebuffed the efforts of Quaker, Anglican, and Moravian missionaries to convert the enslaved population. For planters, Protestantism was a sign of mastery and freedom, and most believed that slaves should not be eligible for conversion. The planters’ exclusive vision of Protestantism was challenged on two fronts: by missionaries, who articulated a new ideology of "Christian slavery," and by enslaved men and women who sought baptism for themselves and their children. In spite of planter intransigence, a small number of enslaved and free Africans advocated and won access to Protestant rites. As they did so, "whiteness" emerged as a new way to separate enslaved and free black converts from Christian masters. Enslaved and free blacks who joined Protestant churches also forced Europeans to reinterpret key points of Scripture and reconsider their ideas about "true" Christian practice. As missionaries and slaves came to new agreements and interpretations, they remade Protestantism as an Atlantic institution. Missionaries argued that slave conversion would solidify planter power, make slaves more obedient and hardworking, and make slavery into a viable Protestant institution. They also encouraged the development of a race-based justification for slavery and sought to pass legislation that confirmed the legality of enslaving black Christians. In so doing, they redefined the practice of religion, the meaning of freedom, and the construction of race in the early modern Atlantic World.Their arguments helped to form the foundation of the proslavery ideology that would emerge in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Science Operations Center at UC Berkeley was recently successful in implementing an automated monitoring system that allowed reduced operations staffing from 24 hours per day to 9 hours per day. The payload safety is monitored exclusively by artificial intelligence (AI) telemetry-processing systems for 16 hours per day. At launch, the EUVE Science Operations Center was staffed and operated as a typical satellite control center, receiving real-time and tape recorder data 24 hours per day. From September 1993 through February 1995, EUVE science operations were redesigned in a phased, low-cost approach. A key factor in the implementation was to utilize existing personnel in new roles through additional training and reorganization. Through- out this period, EUVE guest observers and science data collection were unaffected by the transition in science operations. This paper describes the original and actual implementation plan, staffing phases, and cost savings for this project. We present the lessons learned in the successful transition from three-shift to one-shift operations.

Historians John W. Dower, Craig Cameron, and Ronald Takaki argue that the Pacific War was a war of extermination fueled by race hate. Therefore, the clash between the military forces of the Japanese Empire and United States of America yielded a "kill or be killed" environment across the battlefields of the Pacific. This work examines the conduct of the Second Marine Division during its campaign of conquest against the Japanese held island of Saipan from June 15, 1944-July 9, 1944. It is based upon traditional military history sources to test their theories in context of the conduct of Marines toward Japanese soldiers and civilians during the Saipan campaign. Did Marines practice a war of extermination or conduct themselves in a humane manner?

Duncan, Graham A. "Partnership in mission : a critical historical evaluation of the relationship between ‘older’ and ‘younger’ churches with special reference to the World Mission Council policy of the Church of Scotland". Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28763.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The writing of contemporary history has implications regarding objectivity, subjectivity, the idea of progress, ecumenical history and its relationship to world history. Riane Eisler’s dominator and partnership models in her cultural transformation theory provide an appropriate hermeneutical basis for a historical consideration of the concept of partnership in mission (PIM) along with traditional biblical concepts which have guided mission theology for centuries. Partnership in mission is a laudable concept in the furtherance of participation in God’s mission. It has a distinguished history despite the difficulties experienced in making it a functioning reality. It has had the potential to enable sending and receiving churches to experience fellowship, humility and dignity in relationships. However, the issue of power in the ‘older’ sending churches has been an intrusive factor in preventing the theory from becoming a reality. In the case of the Church of Scotland, which stands in the grand ecumenical tradition of the twentieth century, despite great strides being made over the years to develop mutually enriching relations, increasing problems presented the opportunity for partner relationships to become authentically interdependent. Unfortunately, vulnerability on the part of the Church of Scotland World Mission Council has led to a return to a colonial/dominator approach to partnership. Recent developments in the Church of Scotland indicate that partnership in mission, while still the official model on which mission policy is based, has been challenged in its essence. Attempts to reform the work of the World Mission Council by means of a business consultancy have added no apparent value to the work of the Council or to its worldwide relationships. A lack of flexibility characterises recent developments along with a refusal to examine any other possible models which will enable the maintenance of existing partner church relationships. This has resulted in policy decisions, which affect them deeply, being made without any reference to partner churches. Nor has the Church’s constituency in Scotland been adequately consulted. For the first time in recent history policy decisions of WMC have been the cause of much discussion and deep division within the Church of Scotland. Further, they have ruptured valuable long term relationships and have through differential approaches to partners posed a potential threat to relationships between younger churches and possibly to a diminution of the standing of the Church of Scotland in the ecumenical movement. Opportunities for repentance, self sacrifice and the growth of fellowship in relationships have been spurned to the eventual cost of the Church of Scotland. Authentic partnership in mission is a distinct possibility through the development of relations based on mutuality, where resources must be subject to the norms of accountability, horizontal relations and management of the gifts of God for the people of God.
