Streszczenie:
Chaining is a linguistic mechanism that is concerned with the construction of texts, their textuality and their network of semantic relations. It is concerned with the practical investigation of the constituent units of a given text of any length. This means that we can carry out an in-depth textual analysis of the text at the level of all units of language – morpheme, word, sentence and paragraph levels. Chaining is also concerned with textual progression and processing. When projected onto Qur' anic discourse, chaining produces the Qur'anic text in an upside-down pyramid shape. Thus, there is more reason for the longest suras to be placed at the beginning and the shortest ones at the end. Looking at the upside-down pyramid text, we can appreciate why the Qur'anic message is concluded by monotheism (Q. 112) and divinity (Q. 114), while the wider top surface of the pyramid is the textual environment for lordship (Q. 1) and Islamic legal rulings (Q. 2, Q. 4, etc.), with numerous intervening leitmotifs that are conceptually and intertextually interrelated. Conceptual and intertextual chaining makes the text more accessible to the reader: it is not necessarily characterised by superfluous repetition, but rather is linguistically marked by a high degree of informativity.

Imagology, the study of national and cultural images as represented in textual discourse, is a fruitful approach for disciplines dealing with textual change, such as translation studies. Both imagology and translation studies have gradually extended their area of research, which has revealed growing commonalities. Journalistic texts have for instance been included in research that was previously almost exclusively dealing with literary discourse. Moreover interest in imagological research, sometimes related to the distribution of a promoted national or cultural self-image, has now also grown in countries outside of Europe. Future perspectives for findings on image spread through translation are offered through collaboration with existing research in sociology and psychology.

This paper attempts to critically analyze the feminist constructions of traditional discourses and practices about spousal sexual relationships as discussed and debated in online Urdu weblogs in Pakistan. Using critical discourse analysis framework, the paper conducts a detailed textual analysis of an article published in online Urdu weblog "humsub.com.pk". CDA is used here to present an exposition of underlying ideologies, discourse strategies and textual tactics used by feminist authors to subvert traditional discourses of sexuality, power relations and sexual ethics. These ideological and power aspects of written texts are studied through various methodologies however the present paper has used Fairclough's (2003) three-dimensional model of discourse analysis. This paper is part of an ongoing doctoral research study in which three online Urdu Weblogs are selected as data sources for the period of two years (March 2019 to March 2021). For the purpose of the paper only a selected article is analyzed within the context of a larger data set. The selected media text is was published in Urdu language in June 2021 on humsub.com.pk. This paper aims at describing how liberal secular feminist discourses of sexuality and sexual freedom criticize traditional discourses and practices but these critical feminist discourses fail to engage in rational debates and mainly remain emblems of denial and refusal. Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, discursive, feminist discourse, traditional discourse, discourses of sexuality, textual tactics.

This article addresses the position of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in discourse and social studies. It provides information about the principles of critical discourse analysis and what makes it different from other discourse analyses, which are considered to be non-critical. The term ‘critical’ has been the keyword that distinguishes any types of discourse analysis, i.e. whether or not they are oriented to social issues. Further, CDA concerns on social issues, e.g. power and social inequality, which collaborates micro-analysis of language and macro-analysis of social structure, have brought significant contributions to linguistics and social studies. Especially for linguistics, CDA has brought significant impacts to the textual analyses, which are oriented to investigate how power, social inequality, hegemony and discrimination are established and maintained through discourse presentations.

Abstract This study reveals a mosaic of artful rearrangement, rewriting, and creative interpretation of prophetic texts within the Admonitions of the Damascus Document. Many explicit quotations from scriptures and implicit allusions are interwoven and interpreted in the Admonitions through various methods, including pesher interpretation. The textual backdrop of the Admonitions helps us to determine the borders of the different discourses and to define the structure of the composition, which is divided into ten discourses built in a symmetrical chiastic structure. Each discourse comprises layers of quotations and allusions arranged around a central explicit pesher. Therefore, the explicit pesher in each discourse should not be viewed as an isolated pesher, as some have claimed, but rather as part of a larger thematic pesher. Each discourse/thematic pesher presents a different aspect of the work’s central theme: a polemic introduction to the rules of interpreting the Torah.

Moreover, gender differences and the use of textual discourse markers by Indonesian EFL students in EFL essays have not been extensively discussed. Therefore, this study aimed at elaborating the use of textual discourse markers in male and female students essays. This study involved 40 essays, 20 essays written by female students and 20 essays written by male students. Those essays were selected randomly from Critical Reading and Writing 1 (CRW 1) courses. The study aimed at analyzing the differences and similarities in the use of discourse markers between female and male students essays based on Frasers classifications (1999) of textual discourse markers. AbstractAdvancing theories of literature and animality requires both recognizing the failures of traditional humanist models that separate and elevate people over all "things" animal as well as identifying and developing alternative forms. Along with providing fresh readings and important insights about representative texts in the literary canon, two new books—Carrie Rohman's Stalking the Subject: Modernism and the Animal (2009) and Philip Armstrong's What Animals Mean in the Fiction of Modernity (2008)—illustrate how this challenge is being addressed. Strategically, Rohman works within established textual forms of modern humanity to expand the parameters of who counts as a subject in literature. Armstrong takes a more tactical approach, extending ideas of nonhuman agency in order to frame this very discourse of representation itself as a problem that modern narrative forms bring to a crisis. What thus emerges is a range of textual actions and actors that exceed traditional humanist calculations of the subject. Together these studies frame questions with broader implications for humanistic scholarship: how do textual forms of subjectivity, even of discourse, become historical, and historically flexible, through animal involvements in literary representations?

When Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe published an elaborate version of their discourse theory in Hegemony and Socialist Strategy (1985), they were met with fierce resistance by a unified front of traditional Marxists and anti-poststructuralists. The debates on post-Marxism dominated much of the book’s reception. This focus, combined with discourse theory’s rather abstract nature, its lack of clear methodological guidelines, and its more natural habitat of Political Studies, caused discourse theory to remain confined to this realm of Political Studies, despite the broad ideological definition of the political preferred by the authors. This article aims to revisit discourse theory and bring it into the realm of Media Studies. A necessary condition to enhance discourse theory’s applicability in Media Studies is the re-articulation of discourse theory into discourse theoretical analysis (DTA). DTA’s claim for legitimacy is supported in this article by two lines of argument. Firstly, a comparison with Critical Discourse Analyses (CDA) at the textual and contextual level allow us to flesh out the similarities — and more importantly — the differences between CDA and DTA. Secondly, DTA’s applicability is demonstrated by putting it to work in a case study, which focuses on the articulation of audience participation through televisional practices. Both lines of argument aim to illustrate the potential, the adaptability and the legitimacy of DTA’s move into media studies.

In operating with quite an abstract approach to 'discourse', cultural studies has hardly engaged in detailed textual analyses examining the role of language and discourse in the constitution of cultural processes. By focusing on an area of concern for contemporary cultural studies such as the discursive construction of subject positions, this paper casts light on the instrumental role that critical discourse analysis (henceforth CDA) may play as an analytical resource for cultural studies. In particular, we highlight how detailed textual analyses undertaken by CDA may contribute to deciphering the role of language and discourse in the articulation of cultural practices of identity representation and construction in media discourse. After revising the coincidences on the agendas of CDA and cultural studies, a case study follows exploring the discursive construction of such a subject position on masculinity as the so- called 'new man' in a sample from men's magazines' problem pages as a characteristic popular-culture genre in contemporary Britain. Our analysis substantiates the validity of Fairclough's CDA framework for disentangling the mechanisms of identity construction in this genre of present-day media discourse in the UK.

I will also study the textual symbolism and networks of paronomasias, used to link diseases, body parts, animals and medicinal plants in the same healing action. The analysis of its rhetorical organization and the textual mechanisms of meaning production allows us to understand the functions of ritual language and the presence of a codified system of discourse. The basis of my theoretical approach is the convergence between rhetoric and semiotic study of discourse.

To this end the study adopts three different analytical paradigms. It first utilises a textual approach to survey occurrences of the verb q-t-l in the Qur'an in the context of the imperative. Then a lexical and pragmatic paradigm is applied in order to cast light on the meanings of ‘killing’. The third approach taken is hermeneutic, examining the works of mufassirūn and their analyses and interpretations of the verb, again in the context of the discourse of the imperative. These approaches are also informed by the concepts and tools of modern linguistics.

The various perspectives on the existence until the dissolution of the mass organization need to be understood in depth, objectively, and comprehensively. This research was conducted with the aim of comprehensively dissecting the discourse of HTI radicalism which wants to substitute the Pancasila ideology by carrying the caliphate ideology. This research is a literature study using a qualitative approach. The knife of analysis is the critical discourse analysis of Norman Fairclough's model which consists of three dimensions of analysis, namely text analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The data in this study are texts in the form of vocabulary, sentences, or discourses whose corpus is from a news story entitled "The Rise of HTI Rejection, Said Aqil: The Governor Must Be Able To Build Citizens" published by Tempo.co on Friday, May 5, 2017. The results show that in In terms of text analysis, especially in terms of diction and textual structure, Tempo.co represents the rejection of the caliphate ideology promoted by HTI which is reflected in the use of diction which has a positive meaning. The textual structure uses a strategy of accommodating sources as a news construction database. This can be seen in the construction of news where the four components, namely 1) news title, 2) selection of sources, 3) positioning of source quotes, and 4) the quantity of sources' statements lead to the collectivity of the meaning of rejection of the ideology of the HTI caliphate. Likewise, in the aspect of discourse practice, it is illustrated that the construction of Tempo.co news is in line with the public perspective which rejects HTI's radical ideology, as well as socio-cultural practices that strengthen or strengthen public knowledge and awareness that the disbandment of HTI must be carried out immediately because it can threaten the existence of Pancasila, UUD 1945, dan NKRI.

Abstract The linguistics of the 60s and 70s did not prove to be of much help to translation and translation theory, due to the emphasis placed on languages as formal systems. However, newer directions of linguistics research which focus on the communicative function of language, such as text linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, have much to offer to translation studies. This paper shows how discourse analysis can be applied to translation and highlights some of the benefits of knowledge of linguistics and discourse analysis for the translation teacher, the student and the professional translator. In addition, it joins recent literature on translation studies and linguistics (House and Blum-Kulka 1986; Hatim and Mason 1990; Neubert and Shreve 1992; Baker 1992) in calling for a more influential role of linguistics in translation studies and translation theory. Working within discourse analysis and, in particular, syntax in discourse, i.e. discourse functions of syntactic constructions, the present study examines the discourse functions of the passive in Spanish and in English. The paper first presents a contrastive description of the textual functions of the passive in English and in Spanish based on a corpus of original texts in both languages. Then a discourse-based explanation for the differences is provided. Finally, the author examines the solutions found in translation as well as the analysis' efficiency in predicting and/or explaining such solutions.

This article examines the textual constitution of militarism and militaristic subjects in and by educational discourse in Pakistan. The article focuses on two subjects, namely social studies and Urdu, which are taught in the public school system of Pakistan. In order to examine the constitution of militaristic subjectivities, the author draws upon concepts of poststructuralist theory and critical discourse analysis. The author's main argument is that it is vital to first deconstruct the constructs of war from the minds of people in order for the constructs of peace to be instilled. There are many sites where such deconstruction needs to begin. One of the likely places for such an exercise is in textbooks, for these are sites in which war and violence are or can be constructed and instilled into the minds of future citizens. These are also natural sites for the construction of defenses of peace, for these spaces harbor agency to resist war and violence. This article examines textual and discursive data from Pakistan's educational discourse (mainly curricula and textbooks) to illustrate how war and militarism are constructed by these discourses via curricula and textbooks.

Abstract The article deals with sentence-initial time adverbials in English declarative sentences. Theoretically, it is grounded in functionally-oriented and discourse-based studies, trying to combine the study of syntactic structure, information structure, information flow, and cognitive-pragmatic aspects of discourse construction and interpretation. The aim is to examine some regularities regarding the interplay of their syntactic and pragmatic characteristics and their textual and pragmatic discourse functions. The corpus-based research includes several parameters: (1) syntactic – the form and functional subtype of initial time adverbials, and the syntactic structure of the sentences containing them; (2) pragmatic – related to the information status of initial time adverbials; (3) textual – dealing with semantic, formal and functional similarities between the initial time adverbials and the sentences containing them, and other adverbials and structures in the relevant language segment, as well as with the position of the initial time adverbials in the text. The identified discourse functions (textual and pragmatic) of the initial placement of time adverbials include linking with the previous and following text, rearranging the functional elements within a sentence, temporal scene-setting, creating two especially prominent positions in a sentence, signaling segment boundaries of textual units, etc. It is suggested that particular discourse functions, rather than being associated with one of the parameters examined, actually depend on the interrelatedness of several of them.

This paper aims to present a sociology of literary studies that is distinguished from the sociology of literature in that its focus is on literary studies as a social practice rather than as a socio-cultural institution: how literary studies is institutionalized as such not how it functions in relation to literature. The sociological analysis of literary studies in this paper entails two tasks. Firstly, it constructs a methodological frame within which literary studies can be observed and analysed in terms of the rules of discursive formation rather than as a pre-discursive entity. This is achieved through conceptualizing the Foucauldian notion of discursive formation and knowledge practice as an analytic strategy and operationalising it via Paul Dowling's Social Activity Method. Empirically, the analysis produces a description of the practice of literary studies as instantiated in the particular region of the practice constituted with what I refer to as the crisis discourse. The analysis describes literary studies as that which is emergent upon differing institutionalising strategies articulated by its participants to mark out literary studies from other practices and to maintain its disciplinarity through regulating the distribution and the access of the distribution of the discourse within and beyond the practice. The generalisability of the research in this paper lies in the applicability of the analytical method that can be employed at any given level of analysis to examine discursive practice—such as literary studies—as the effects of the particular discourses in terms of how they articulate and sustain the institutionalised identity of the practice.

In consumption culture, individuals need things to update their selves or to represent their identities. The more they update their belongings, the more they feel unsatisfied. In this cultural recycling, everyday objects become objects of desire, while the notion of design functions to create attraction. The problem originates in the disengagement of subjects–objects in which the capitalist economic system gets benefits sustaining the cycle of mass production-consumption. To get more benefit, this cycle is sped up along with discount shopping context. The study aims to produce a design discourse in discount shopping context in relevance of the issues of individuality and ethics. The method is a textual analysis with critical studies perspective and deconstructionist approach. The texts are the questionnaire transcripts written by fifteen women. Critical studies perspective clarifies power relations between capitalist economic system and consumer; and deconstructivist approach determines binary relations in relevance of individuality, and ethics and heterogeneity of the texts concerning to design. Along with these two approaches, textual analysis creates a discursive structure. The structure is used to generate a design discourse in which the meaning of design is situated. In this structure, design would be something in a specific heterogeneity and relations around the matters of individuality and ethics. The discursive structure is of importance that summarizes the method used and determines all coherencies around the definitions of design. This structure also could be a useful source for the production of other critical discourses on the relations of subjects–objects and the position of design in consumption culture.

However, en only fulfills this function when ocurring in a sentenceinitial subject NP. In the course of the grammaticalization, neither the sentence-initial position nor the subject function of the NP are required to present new and salient discourse referents.

The relevance of the study is determined by the need to rethink musical art as a value orientation in the period of postmodernity. The purpose of the study is to determine the features of the textual dimension of musical discourse as a feature of the postmodern value perception of musical art in combination with the information and computerization of society. The purpose of the article is to show the basic context of the textual dimension of musical discourse. This research shows a holistic analysis of musical art in the context of discourse analysis and innovative modeling, which in the future is a prospect for creating new ideas for the interpretation of musical works. The study highlights the main components of textual analysis of a musical work, as well as the perception of musical discourse as a manifestation of today’s information of social development. For a comprehensive analysis of musical art it is necessary to understand the basic theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of this concept. Therefore, the principal theoretical approaches of scientists concerning musical discourse in the context of the textual dimension were studied, and theoretical problems in musical discourse analysis were developed. Beneficial to study the complex modeling of the textual dimension of musical art, the methods of analysis and synthesis, research method and discourse analysis method were used. This study provided a basis for determining the effectiveness of computer simulation technology in the context of the musical dimension.

Telecommunication advertisements have bifurcating relations, functioning as a buoyant part of the capitalist market, and as instruments indexing consumerism, which bridges the gap between service providers and subscribers. Previous linguistic studies on the subject have focused on speech acts, mainly locutionary and illocutionary acts, and the lexical and stylistic resources in telecommunication advertisements. This study focuses on the representations of consumerism in MTN and GLO advertisements. The study adopts a model labeled as conceptual-textual meaning in advertisements, which annexes the principles of critical stylistics, pragmatic acts, and multimodality to analyse both textual and multimodal excerpts from ten (10) MTN and GLO television advertisements. These were downloaded from youtube, where they are streamed to reach a vast majority of internet users after they had been aired on mainstream television and cable stations. The study reveals that consumerism is the most pivotal feature projected in the advertisements of MTN and GLO. Advertisements and services are principally designed to condition choice of the subscribers to expand their consumptions. Consumerism is metaphorised, using food substances and materials co-opted from the socio-cultural milieus that condition the advertisements. Conceptual-textual functions like naming and describing, enumerating and exemplifying and prioritising, and direct acts, indirect acts, conversation, emotional and psychological acts, as well as the textual resources of inference, metaphor, reference, relevance, and metapragmatic joker are used extensively to show consumerism. The study concludes every service option is aimed at expanding consumerism, while the cost of services, interest, and use of the services are the shades of consumption of telecommunication services

Researchers conducted a textual analysis of metajournalistic discourse published in articles by The Image, Deconstructed, the photojournalism industry blog, from 2011 to 2017 ( N=70). Findings suggest that photojournalists define access differently than scholars. They obtain access through purposeful body language and verbal communication, clarity of intent, and persistence. These findings are interpreted through the lens of the theory of metajournalistic discourse.

Revival takes on many different forms in Muslim societies. This article explores and identifies a ḥadīth discourse of revival, based on a famous ḥadīth and its commentary that promises renewal at the head of every century. Using an inter-textual analysis, it argues that revival was rooted in the first crisis faced by the early Muslim community when the Prophet died and could no longer personally guide Muslims. Across time and place, the discourse of revival confronts this original crisis by naming and renaming it, and offering a resolution. I also suggest that the first crisis was beyond resolution, as according to Muslim belief the prophetic line of succession ended with Muhammad. The discourse of revival thus became potentially recurrent, as resolution was always prone to disruption.

Statement of the problem. The results of interdisciplinary studies show that the aging process was causelessly associated with words of decline, vulnerability and has a gender marking. The relationship between these two identities is complex, and as linguistic research, it has not been studied to a sufficient extent yet, and does not have a satisfactory theoretical foundation. The purpose of the article is to analyze lexical units with ageist semantics excerpted from literary works and identify semantic groups that are based on certain stereotypical attitudes associated with the aging process. Materials and methods. The research material is the prose of American female writers K. Bushnell and S. Mayer, containing examples of age stereotypes. The main methods of analysis are the continuous sampling method, the hypothetical-deductive method, the descriptive method with its main components (observation, description, generalization), as well as the method of contextual-pragmatic interpretation. Conclusions. In the course of the work, it is revealed that under the influence of formed ageist attitudes, negative thoughts about senescence can become inward-looking and become a source of gerontophobia. In the works under study, the language of ageism is divided into five semantic groups, ncluding explicit expressions of personages, as well as implicit author’s bias.

the present study p urports to shed light on the problematics of the relationship between language and politics in general and on the semiotic formulation, in particular, of Prince Saud Al-Faicel political discourse. It attempts to explain how this discourse succeeded to formulate a political model capable, thanks to its argumentative and rhetorical tools, to decode or unlock regional crises and international transformations in order to make historical decisions. Such problematics reflect our particular perception of political discourse in its relationship with textual linguistics, along with the powerful semiotic discursive strategies and practices ever present in the analysis and interpretation of the political discourse of Prince Saud Al-Faicel. The Present study relied on an analytic frame following Norman Fairclough's model and other semiotic studies structured around lexicon and language construction. It also paid attention to analyzing the intricacies characterizing relations and strategies within power relations. The originality of the present study can be seen in its combination of the textual approach with the analytical one when dealing with political discourse.

Despite a myriad of studies that have been reported in analysing media discourse, few works take into account media bias. In response to this empirical gap, the present critical discourse study (CDS) aims to expose how the biggest national and international news media, The Jakarta Post and The New York Times construct the media bias in depicting Palestine and Israel regarding the latest conflicts in 2019 and 2020. The transitivity system of Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics (SFL) was adopted to examine the textual features or choice of words in the clauses of 4 news articles from each news media. The findings show that both mainstream media have similarities, as if more favors to Palestine as the victim of the conflicts rather than Israel as a war criminal nation. However, The Jakarta Post and The New York Times have different sensitivities in constructing media bias. This empirical evidence suggests that critical discourse analysis (CDA) has a pivotal role in comprehending language used in media discourses. The last but not least, combining CDA and another theoretical approach is suggested for future studies.

ABSTRACT: Previous studies of the dísir have tended to focus on either their links with fertility or use of the term to designate a wide range of supranatural female figures. This study reassesses the textual evidence for the nature of these beings, applying Jens Peter Schjødt’s notion of “discourse” to argue that we should not be searching for a single coherent category of beings. Rather, it argues, our sources depict three semidistinct “dísir” discourses: a group of prosperity-focused female figures with strong links to local landscapes worshipped during the late pagan Iron Age; the use of the signifier “dís” as a poetic synonym for a range of female figures in verse; and a medieval textual discourse of “martial dísir” construed on the basis of poetic texts, but which has no basis in pre-Christian religion.

AbstractRepresentation of lesbian relations in Ming-Qing vernacular literature is foremost a male discourse. A close look into this discourse will help gauge the contemporary social stance, especially the male stance, towards lesbianism. This paper examines textual strategies and the narrative norm of portraying lesbian love and sex in twelve Ming-Qing texts. The normative pattern extracted from these texts suggests a consensus in the male position that favors suppression of lesbianism via trivializing or heterosexualizing passions and romance between women. Male writing on lesbianism thus seems to function as containment of homosexuality for the benefit of the institutions of heterosexual sex and marriage.

Streszczenie:
The traditional definition of anaphora in purely co-textual terms as a relation between two co-occurring expressions is in wide currency in theoretical and descriptive studies of the phenomenon. Indeed, it is currently adopted in on-line psycholinguistic experiments on the interpretation of anaphors, and is the basis for all computational approaches to automatic anaphor resolution (see Mitkov 2002). Under this conception, the anaphor, a referentially-dependent expression type, requires “saturation” by an appropriate referentially-autonomous, lexically-based expression — the antecedent — in order to achieve full sense and reference. However, this definition needs to be re-examined in the light of the ways in which real texts operate and are understood, where the resulting picture is rather different. The article aims to show that the co-textual conception is misconceived, and that anaphora is essentially an integrative, discourse-creating procedure involving a three-way relationship between an “antecedent trigger”, an anaphoric predication, and a salient discourse representation. It is shown that it is only in terms of a dynamic interaction amongst the interdependent dimensions of text and discourse, as well as context, that the true complexity of anaphoric reference may be satisfactorily described. The article is intended as a contribution to the broader debate within the pages of this journal and elsewhere between the formalist and the functionalist accounts of language structure and use.

Discourse analysis has grown in applied linguistics since the 1970s and its application in translation studies became prominent in the 1990s (Munday 2012, 137). One of the topics in discourse analysis that has been given particular attention by translation scholars is the translation of choices within the textual metafunction, with particular focus on the role of Theme and its impact on thematic development in text. A number of studies have generated new insights into the translation of textual choices, for example concerning failures to recreate patterns of thematic progression. The growth of this area of research is a highly encouraging development since it had previously been largely neglected in translation studies (House 1997, 31). While these studies have focused on separate micro-issues in specific language pairs, the present article attempts to conduct a comprehensive review of existing studies on this topic in order to (i) highlight major topics addressed so far and (ii) make suggestions for further studies into this important area of translation from a systemic functional linguistic perspective.

The intensity of this official discourse frequently vacillated, adjusting to both economic and political conditions of the time as part of the larger political-economic contestation between competing ideas and policies.Originality/valueThere have been calls for more studies on how frugality discourses have evolved in international markets, especially in terms of how they are shaped by local historical antecedents and long-standing tensions. Through the Chinese case, this article illuminates why some traditional values persist and obtain a paradoxical co-existence with consumerist ethos in our modern society.

The article considers the specific character of modern translation discourse, trends and opportunities of realization in the era of changes and global challenges. The relevance of the article is determined by the need to establish common and distinctive forms of expression and formats of translation discourse. The representative sources of three communicatively active discursive practices constitute the empirical base of the paper: scientific / translation studies translation discourse; professional / industry translation discourse; didactic translation discourse. The textual material of the discourse under consideration is analyzed in order to identify thematic dominants of three subtypes under consideration. The similarities and differences of the topics discussed by the translation community within the framework of the selected discursive practices are determined. Sources of translation discourse in Russian and German linguistic cultures were also involved in the analysis to identify common and distinctive features. The analysis revealed the tendency of the Russian-language translation discourse to be a more profound scientific search and substantiation of translation problems, and, on the contrary, the tendency of the German- and English-language discourses to discuss applied issues. The analyzed subtypes of translation discourse reveal certain unifying features: current challenges reaction rapidity, new phenomena and trends in society. However, these subtypes have translation tools of their own, traditions and formats that shape thematic dominants of each direction of the discourse. Thus, the paper revealed the dynamic nature of the discourse, on the one hand, and its sustainable development, on the other.

This article supplements the array of methods in urban policy discourse analysis by applying textometry to a corpus of planning documents. Textometry is a systematic computer-assisted analysis of textual data. When applied to large corpora, the method can reveal contrasts that cannot readily be detected by non-instrumented human reading. It seems promising therefore to use textometry to analyse urban planning documents which, in France as in other countries, are known for being at first sight pretty indistinguishable from each other. By analysing dozens of documents at a time, this method increases the scale of analysis, enabling us to identify massive transitions in discourse over time or major contrasts among discourses emanating from specific groups of actors. When combined with classical methods (i.e. interviews, qualitative archival research), textometry seems to be effective at identifying new ways of understanding urban policy discourses. To exemplify the potential of such a method, the analysis developed here draws on a corpus of 36 French urban transport plans (plans de déplacements urbains) for the period 2000–2015. Our results display marked contrasts in discourses, mainly as a result of changes over time. Paradoxically, for most cities between 2000 and 2010, the discourses become increasingly abstract in their content while highlighting a proactive attitude and providing specific information on the document implementation process and a precise list of institutional partners.

Composicionalidade. Sequência textual.ABSTRACTThis article presents an analysis of the compositionality of a soccer narration broadcast on television, starting a dialogue between studies of discourse (of dialogical perspective) and the notion of textual sequence, proposed by Adam (2011). For this, we intend to analyze the work of the speaker / narrator in the compositional of soccer narration ; describe the enunciative scene in which the interaction occurs and discuss its relevance to the understanding of compositionality in this type of narration, and finally reflect on how the occurrence and organization of these sequences interferes, a priori, in the genre architectural. The paper focuses on the English-language digital discourse (EDD) and considers it in terms of Descartes’ square. Despite the incongruence of the medieval philosophical paradigm with the modern stage of posthumanitarian studies, it is the quadronymic and clearly delineated frame, “perspicuae veritates” (according to R. Descartes), which can balance a diverse phenomenon of digital discourse. There are three main aspects of the study considered further: English-language digital discourse and its quadronymic potential, which is interpreted in three main perspectives: in terms of discursive impulse and discourse response; within hyper- / hypodynamic levels of English-language digital discourse and the English-language digital textual space (EDTS). Quadrominic interpretation of English-language digital discourse results in the following findings: symmetry of discourse construction; logic and sequence of discourse representation and its parameters; slot representation of discourse paradigmatic parameters; identification of interdependencies, conditions and parameters of discourse within quadrants.

The article discusses the potential contribution of (critical) discourse analysis to cultural studies. The textual/discursive approach to media reception is advanced as a way of investigating the semiotic and sociological concerns underpinning cultural studies. The article demonstrates the expediency of exploring the socio-cultural implications of media consumption by embracing its complexity. Understood as related to the textual/discursive, affective, cognitive, ideological and embodied aspects of identity, the complexity of individuals’ engagements with media is examined by means of discursive psychology. The advantages of this approach over other methods of investigating media reception are illustrated and discussed in relation to the concept of ‘cultural intelligence’. Relatedly, the importance of the proper understanding of the media consumer’s reflexivity is stressed, as well as an accurate operationalization of this concept in critical research.

This article takes the case of the Vietnamese Cao Dai religion to examine how Asian religious leaders and translators, in a context of colonial modernity, invested a European language with their own cosmologies and discourses, building both a national identity and an alternative spiritual universalism. Studies of translation in colonial contexts have tended to focus on the processes and impact of translating European texts and ideas into the languages of the colonized. This article discusses the inverse process, examining how Caodai textual production used French spiritist language and tropes to occult its Chinese roots, translating Daoist cosmology into a universalist and anti-colonial spiritual discourse rooted in Vietnamese nationalism. These shifts are examined through a close examination of translingual practices in the production and translation of the core esoteric scripture of Caodaism, theĐại Thừa Chơn Giáo 大乘真教(The True Teachings of the Great Vehicle), rendered in its 1950 Vietnamese-French edition asThe Bible of the Great Cycle of Esotericism. This study demonstrates how colonial religious institutions and networks of circulation in Asia stimulate the emergence of new movements and textual practices that mimic, invert, jumble, and transcend the cosmologies of both the Chinese imperium and the European colonial regime.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe study of multimodality in discourse reveals the way writers articulate their intended meanings and intentions. Systemic functional analyses of oral biology discourse have been limited to few studies; yet, no published study has investigated multimodal textual features. This qualitative study explored and analyzed the multimodal textual features in undergraduate dentistry texts. The systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA) is framed by Halliday’s (Halliday, M. A. K. 2014. Introduction to Functional Grammar. Revised by Christian M. I. M. Matthiessen. 4th ed. London/New York: Taylor and Francis) linguistic tools for the analysis of Theme and Kress and van Leeuwen’s (Kress, Gunther, and Theo van Leeuwen. 2006. Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Design. London: Routledge) framework for the analysis of visual designs. Oral biology discourse intertwines two thematic progression patterns: constant and linear. Although a split-rheme pattern was minimally employed, disciplinary-specific functions of this pattern emerged. The SF-MDA of the composition of information in oral biology pictures extends Kress and van Leeuwen’s functional interpretations of the meaning-making resources of visual artifacts. Finally, the pedagogical implications for science tutors and for undergraduate nonnative science students are presented.
