Literature and first-hand accounts assert that home education and schooling are fundamentally different forms of education and that homeschooling has long been associated with positive educational outcomes. In 2012, the Western Australian School Curriculum and Standards Authority directed all Western Australian schools and home educators to begin implementing the Australian Curriculum (a Foundation to Year 10 syllabus specifying yearly-delineated content). Home educators received no explanation as to how they could apply such a detailed, fixed syllabus to their un-school-like settings and the only assistance offered came in the form of a reference to the official Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority website. The aim of this research is to determine how homeschooling parents perceive this directive, how (or if) they intend to satisfy its obligations and whether evidence suggests that superior educational outcomes are likely to result. It is argued that parents’ perceptions of homeschool requirements are of critical importance as accurate evaluation of home education is extremely difficult particularly if parents choose to eschew registration. A qualitative paradigm with an interpretive phenomenological emphasis was utilized to understand parents’ responses, actions and decisions. To this end, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted in March 2013 with thirteen home educators. Participants were recruited from Perth and south-west Western Australia using purposive and snowball sampling. The findings of this study indicate there is a wide disparity in parents’ willingness to adopt the Australian Curriculum into their homeschool settings. Some parents indicate an inclination to adjust the way they report educational experiences rather than to modify their actual practices. This study concludes that imposing a regulatory framework intended for mainstream schools onto home educating families actually restricts the use of flexible practices which have significantly contributed to the positive educational outcomes of homeschooled children in the past.

There are a lot of stand-alone and mobile platforms using transmitters today. Some want to be found while others do not. In our modern society there is a great demand of mobility and communication abilities. This means that several mobile platforms could potentially carry a sensor to record incoming signals to be used in Direction Finding. This thesis identifies the possibility to determine the direction to a transmitter with randomly placed sensors. By conducting a literature review well-known methods such as Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA) and MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) where chosen as methods in this analysis. The methods are applied on two antenna arrays, an Uniform Circular Array (UCA) and a Random Circular Array (RCA). The RCA is generated with randomly placed sensors. The performance in the Direction Of Arrival (DOA) is investigated in presence of time synchronization error and with different numbers of elements, radius and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). The ambiguity in the arrays is also investigated to insure a ambiguity-free DOA estimation. The results from this analysis identifies that the accuracy in the DOA estimation is dependent on the number of elements, SNR, the elements positions and the radius of the DF array. Furthermore, the accuracy of a UCA is greater than a RCA when the elements are randomly distributed within the area of a circle with radius R. Finally, it has shown that if time synchronization error occurs between the sensors, then the MUSIC method the accuracy will decrease greatly.

Resultaten implicerar att noggrannheten i riktningsbestämningen är beroende avantalet element, SNR, elementens position och radien i antennmatrisen. Online mapping services and portable GPS units make it easy to get very detailed driving directions. While these directions are sufficient for an automaton to follow, they do not present a big picture description of the route. As a result, while people can follow these detailed turn-by-turn directions, it can be difficult for them to actually comprehend where they are going. Our goal is to make such directions more comprehensible. Our approach is to apply findings from human spatial cognition, the study of how people conceptualize and organize their knowledge of large-scale space, to create a system that generates written route overviews. Route overviews provide a big picture description of a route, and are intended to supplement the information in turn-by-turn directions. Our route overviews are based on cognitively-inspired design criteria such as: the use of spatial hierarchy, goal-directed descriptions, selective suppression of detail, and the use of the trunk segments and cognitive anchor points along the route. In our experiments, we show that we can make directions more comprehensible independent of the particular places a person knows - by using what we know about how people think about space to structure the way we present spatial information.

The General Direction Routing Protocol (GDRP) is a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) multi-path routing protocol which abstracts localization information (commonly GPS coordinates) into relative direction information in order to perform routing decisions. By generating relative direction information GDRP is able to operate with fewer precision requirements than other protocols. This abstraction also allows the integration of other emerging hardware-based localization techniques, for example, Beamforming Sensor Arrays. GDRP does not specifically address the next hop a packet should take, but instead specifies a direction it should travel. This direction abstraction allows for multiple paths to be taken through the network thus enhancing network robustness to node mobility and failures. This indirect addressing scheme also provides a solution to sensor node unique identification. GDRP is simulated in a custom simulator written in Java. This simulator supports interfaces for multiple protocols for layers 1, 2, 3, and 7 of the OSI model. For performance comparisons, GDRP is compared against multiple WSN routing protocols. GDRP operates with a significantly lower setup cost in terms of bytes transmitted and a lower setup latency for networks of varying sizes. It also demonstrates an exponentially lower routing cost when compared to another multi- path routing protocol due to a more efficient packet propagation in the network.

This Master thesis tackles the problem of measuring objects’ directions from a motionlessobservation point. A new method based on a single rotating camera requiring the knowledge ofonly two (or more) landmarks’ direction is proposed. In a first phase, multi-view geometry isused to estimate camera rotations and key elements’ direction from a set of overlapping images.Then in a second phase, the direction of any object can be estimated by resectioning the cameraassociated to a picture showing this object. A detailed description of the algorithmic chain isgiven, along with test results on both synthetic data and real images taken with an infraredcamera.

Power lies at the heart of the running of a company. It is the employer's decision-making ability that constitues managerial power. Examining managerial power brings us to wonder about what legally justifies the inegality relationship between employers and employees within a context of civil equality. The fact that companies are linked to one anather in an intricate network of influences makes as question power holding, too. Reffering to the actual exercice of power seems to be the most appropriate means to identify the person who holds power. The employer enjoys an extensive managerial power he exerts over the company's property as well as over the employees. This power is under the control of the legislation and case law, and such normative control represents a safe guard against the arbitrary exercise of managerial power. The power regulating norms are effective so long a they are supervised by authorities entitled to see to it that they are abided by. Our purpose is not to examine the control of legality, but rather to appreciate to what extent and according to what canons the judge and the legal administration are entiled to check the employer's interests, and thereby are likely to call the latter's options into question

This thesis addresses the question of whether time has an objective direction. Most philosophers of time hold that time has an objective direction, on the grounds that there are various phenomena which seem to suggest that time has a direction. These phenomena include the fact that there seem to be a range of temporally asymmetric phenomena such as the increase of entropy, causation, and deliberation. Amongst these phenomena are also appearances and linguistic data. It may seem as though we feel as though time passes, or we feel as if time has a direction. In addition, we use tensed expressions such as ‘the meeting will start’ or ‘that meeting has ended’. Most philosophers hold that since the best explanation of these phenomena posits objective temporal direction, we have a reason to posit that time does have an objective direction. That is, they appeal to an argument (or series of arguments) in the form of an inference to the best explanation (henceforth IBE) from the presence of these various phenomena to the positing of an objective direction to time.

This thesis deals with problems related to the notion of sense of direction in graphs: We define this notion and provide some examples of labelling that realize it. We then survey the problem of minimal sense of direction in regular graphs using symmetric labelling, and its connection to various notions such as cycle symmetry, vertex symmetry, Cayley graph, view, and surrounding. We also present new types of symmetries that are equivalent to having minimal sense of direction. Afterward, we cover the problem of minimal sense of direction in regular graphs using an asymmetric labelling and establish several new results regarding this problem. We show that many classical topologies do not have asymmetric minimal sense of direction using the asymmetric labelling. We conclude this thesis with a program that finds the minimum chordal labelling in an arbitrary graph.

In the research on urban flows, two trends can be distinguished: some studies based on real urban environments, either in the field or on reproductions; and some on simplified models. One such model, a staggered cube array, has been investigated extensively, both experimentally in wind tunnels and numerically using LES and DNS, but always with a flow direction normal to the faces of the cubes. We are here investigating the effects of different wind directions on the flow within and above the cube array. As no other study has been published on the subject, both numerical and experimental investigation methods have been used. For the numerical side, large-eddy simulations were conducted using the finite volume method implemented in commercial software (StarCD, CD-adapco). The half-channel flow simulated was driven by a momentum source equiva- lent to a pressure gradient. The results are shown to agree well with those of wind-tunnel experiments conducted in parallel. For the experimental side, the boundary layer flow is measured in two dimensions using particle-image velocimetry and the drag using pressure tapped cubes and a drag balance. The results show that the mean flow field within the canopy is only weakly dependent on the direction of the flow above. Above the canopy, the mean velocity profile, time av- eraged and spatially averaged in horizontal layers, is shown to include an inertial sublayer where a logarithmic profile can be fitted. The fit proves to be best by considering for zero-plane displacement the height at which the mean drag acts and points arguably in the direction of a flow dependent value of the Von Karman constant. At the top of the numerical domain, the mean flow is also deviated from the direction of the forcing. We show that this deviation is directly related to previously unseen lift forces applied on the cubes. On balancing the different forces in the numerical domain, the viscous contribu- tions to both the lift and the drag forces are shown to be larger than anticipated from previous studies. Although these results could not be validated by the experiments as the viscous forces remain small compared to the experimental errors, such contributions raise concerns with regards to the Reynolds number independence of the flow and to the need for more complex wall conditions for LES. Overall, the variations of the flow pa- rameters are not negligible and prove to be non-linear and non-monotonic with the flow angle which highlights the importance of considering the flow direction when studying or parameterising urban landscapes. 1.

Developmental processes involving symmetry-breaking of homogeneous cell populations into leaders and followers are found in many important contexts. Cells constrained by culture on two-dimensional scaffolds, as well as in three-dimensional shapes, appear to respond to convex curves with an increasing propensity to protrude, while concave curves in contrast appear to inhibit protrusion. This has interesting implications in terms of a potential positive feedback loop. This feedback may act in symmetry-breaking, through amplification of initial stochastic differences in cell shape, and also in collective migration, through reinforcing and directing the coherent movement of collectives. In this study, epithelial cells were cultured on two-dimensional micropatterns with variable curvatures to examine the effect of edge geometry and other variables on the likelihood of protrusions forming. This platform allowed the quantification of F-actin-based protrusions at the periphery of multicellular epithelial clusters, in segments defined by cluster edge curvature. The initial observations confirmed reports in the literature of preferential localisation of protrusions at more convex regions, and relative inhibition at more concave regions. A previously-published work has postulated a role for secreted modulators of motility, with the shape of a group of cells determining the concentration of diffusing morphogen each individual cell is exposed to. To test this hypothesis, a low-shear flow culture chamber was used to disrupt the putative gradients. Despite theoretical and empirical support for the sufficiency of the flow condition to disrupt autocrine signalling, micropatterned cells cultured under flow showed no significant differences from the control condition. These findings form the basis of a manuscript which has been accepted for publication by the Journal of Anatomy. The results of an Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) study carried out by collaborators were suggestive of a role for cellular mechanotransduction in sensing and responding to micropattern curvature. Differential calcium channel mechanoactivation was hypothesised as being one potential mechanism underlying the response to curvature, given the known involvement of mechanosensitive ion channels in cellular responses to force and substrate stiffness, and the multiple roles of calcium in cellular motility. Artificially increasing cytosolic calcium levels with Ionomycin reduced protrusion rates at convex curves. However, treatment with BAPTA-AM to sequester intracellular calcium had no effect on protrusion rates. ROCK inhibitor, in contrast, increased protrusion rates at concave curves, and Blebbistatin increased protrusion rates globally. These results together are suggestive of differential control of myosin depending on local curvature: cyclic and driven by calcium-activation of MLCK in the convex regions (with lamellipodia undergoing protrusion-retraction cycles), versus sustained and controlled by ROCK in the concave regions (where lamellipodia are inhibited). The unexpected finding that protrusions at convex regions were resistant to the actin cytoskeleton-disrupting drug Cytochalasin D may point to a role for a tropomyosin isoform in defining the differing mechanical characteristics of the actin cytoskeleton in response to local curvature. In addition, the previously-noted lack of effect of BAPTA-AM treatment (which has been shown to interfere with dynamic microtubules) is suggestive of a role for stabilised microtubules in protrusions at convex regions. These indications of unique characteristics to the protrusions promoted by convex curvature give added support to the curvature-protrusion feedback model, and its relevance to tissue morphogenesis. In summary, this work provides evidence against a previously-published suggested mechanism for the curvature-protrusion feedback loop that is proposed to act during epithelial morphogenesis, and evidence in support of a role for a calcium-based mechanism in driving the initiation and maintenance of leader cells in migrating epithelial sheets. Further work is called for in characterising the protrusions promoted by convex curvature, and the mechanisms controlling them. This area is of significance in gaining greater understanding of tissue morphogenesis in pathogenesis and development, and of potential value in tissue engineering applications.

This research explored two aspects of visually guided walking (1) what is the role of optic flow in the recalibration of misperceived direction while walking, and (2) how does a change in perceived direction map onto a change in walking direction. Data from five studies investigating adaptation to displaced direction (by prism glasses) suggested the following. First, optic flow is important in the recalibration of perceived direction. Further, processing optic flow is attentionally demanding, such that when cognitive load is increased, recalibration decreases. The results also demonstrated that the timecourse of recalibration changed as a function of the presence, or absence, of optic flow. With regards to the relationship between egocentric direction and walking direction, we demonstrated that a change in visual straight ahead could be mapped onto a change in target-heading error. We found that this relationship held when we unpacked the data according to the direction of displacement to which observers were exposed. The important relationship between visually perceived direction and walking direction was also highlighted in a patient study, using patients whose perception of direction was endogenously shifted after a right hemisphere stroke. Taken together, the results of this thesis help to highlight the role of optic flow in the recalibration of perceived direction, and the role of perceived direction in the visual guidance of walking. It is argued that optic flow promotes rapid recalibration of visual direction, and that change in perceived visual straight ahead can be mapped onto a changed in walking direction.

The adult kidney consists of hundreds of thousands of fine epithelial tubules as functional units called nephrons. Nephrons have U-shaped tubules: loops of Henle that descend from the cortex to the medulla. This radial arrangement is critical to maintain water homeostasis in the kidney. Although Henle’s loops are crucial to renal physiology, the cue(s) they uses to navigate to the medulla are not understood. In this thesis, I investigate how the loop of Henle elongates during mouse renal development and show that it is probably guided to the medulla by diffusible, heparin-binding molecules. I used immumohistochemistry (IHC) on cryosections of embryonic kidneys to study the natural anatomy of the Henle’s loop. I used a low-volume culture system to allow embryonic kidneys (both natural and tissue-engineered) to form loops of Henle ex vivo and manipulated their direction of growth. Time-lapse imaging of Lgr-5 EGFP embryonic kidneys demonstrated the movement of the apex of the loop which suggested the idea of guidance cue(s) acting on the loop of Henle. Cut-and-paste experiments showed that loops appeared to be attracted to maturing collecting duct. Co-culture with an exogenous tubule inducer suggested the embryonic spinal cord as another source to attract the loops. Using raTAL (rat thick ascending loop of Henle) and 6TA2 (embryonic collecting duct cells) cell lines, I designed and performed a cell migration assay to test whether raTAL was attracted to 6TA2 cells. raTAL cells were notably attracted to 6TA2 cells compared to other cell lines. raTAL cells were also attracted to 6TA2-conditioned medium, which indicated that raTAL cells were attracted by secreted molecule(s). To begin to characterise those secreted molecule(s), heparin-binding protein-coated beads were used in the cell migration system and showed that at least one critical guidance factor is heparin-binding. From this study, I found that the apex of the Henle’s loop does move and loops are attracted by secreted molecule(s) possibly from the collecting duct. Although target molecule(s) were unidentified, this study provides the first mechanistic information about the guidance of the loop of Henle. Moreover, this was the first study of guidance of epithelial tubule shafts (rather than tips) adding to our understanding of general tubule morphogenesis.

It is a familiar tenet that desires and beliefs have opposite directions of fit. Our beliefs, according to this view, should be changed to fit the world – if necessary – because they are for saying how things are. Our desires give us reasons to change the world, because they are for saying what to do, or how things should be. I argue that like beliefs, desires have only the mind-to-world direction of fit. In arguing for this conclusion, I present new accounts of both desire and direction of fit. Desires are inputs to the goal-directed system – a system for behavioural control studied in psychology and neuroscience – with the function of tracking the reward values of outcomes. In the goal-directed system these states are combined with further states representing contingencies between actions and outcomes, in order to select the actions which offer greatest reward. According to this account, desires come in occurrent and standing forms, are likely to have a wide range of outcomes as their objects, and interact with habits, emotions and intentions in familiar ways. My account of direction of fit uses a teleosemantic framework. Teleosemantics is a family of theories of representation that aim to identify the characteristic functions of representations and the systems in which they operate, and focus on representation as a biological phenomenon. It is particularly suited to thinking about direction of fit, because representations have their directions of fit in virtue of what they are for – that is, their functions. I claim that representations have the mind-toworld direction of fit when the systems that produce them have the function of doing so under specific conditions, and the world-to-mind direction of fit when the systems that consume them have the function of behaving in specific ways, whenever the representations occur. Desires do not have the world-to-mind direction of fit, because what the goal-directed system should do when any given desire is occurrent also depends on what other desires are occurrent at the time, and on the agent’s beliefs. It does not follow that we have no reason to try to make the world fit our desires; instead, this conclusion shows that the place of desires in rational motivation is less closely tied to their properties as representations than some philosophers have thought.

This study explores the similar and different developmental influences that shape the practice of beginning and advanced spiritual directors. An examination of the contemporary literature on spiritual direction finds that in the main, two developmental influences shape the practice of contemporary spiritual directors: their capacity to adopt a contemplative stance towards their directees and their ability to be aware contextually of the factors that fashion the dynamic of accompaniment. While the review highlights the presence of these two influences, the literature is deficient in understanding the similarities and differences in how these two influences shape the practice of beginning and advanced spiritual directors. To address the deficiency, this study reviews three groups of Western Australian spiritual directors, Anglican, Churches of Christ and Roman Catholic. The investigation takes a qualitative, ethnographic approach, using focus groups. An analysis and discussion of the data confirms that the similarities and differences in the influences that shape their practice revolve around two key developmental influences namely, the capacity of directors to adopt a contemplative stance to their directees, and their ability to be aware contextually of the factors that fashion the dynamic of accompaniment. While both influences shape beginning and advanced directors, the former impacts more on the practice of beginning directors and the latter more affects advanced directors. Two factors may initiate and sustain the capacity of directors to adopt a contemplative stance. First, directors grow by noticing and attending to all the dimensions of their human experience. Second, directors develop by having their experience attended to in some form of therapeutic relationship or through participation in various developmental group processes. Directors may enhance their capacity to be aware contextually of the factors that fashion the dynamic of accompaniment through understanding paradigms about spiritual direction practice and spiritual development. Their appreciation of paradigms about spiritual direction may derive from two sources. The first is by how they distinguish more effectively spiritual direction from other therapeutic practices. The second is by how they grow in understanding relevant theological, philosophical, and psychological perspectives that inform good practice. Directors may further increase their comprehension of interpretive frameworks about spiritual development by redressing the attitudinal effects of fundamentalism and incorporating a multiplicity of approaches to spirituality. Training programmes are an important means to introduce and develop directors’ abilities to be aware contextually of the factors that fashion the dynamic of accompaniment. A person’s ecclesial role may influence the context in which a director commences practice. From this discussion, this study draws conclusions and offers recommendations applicable to practice and research.

A scanning sensor at the dry end of a paper machine samples a noisy mix ture of both cross direction and machine direction variations. Although many techniques have been developed to separate these two variations and estimate a filtered profile, industrial practice has changed little over the years. In this work, a novel online Cross Direction (CD) /Machine Direction (MD) separation approach is developed. The method uses a fundamental prop erty of the CD variations to separate them from the MD variations. It is shown that the scanned CD variations build an even periodic function in the time domain and appear only as integer multiples of twice the scanning frequency in the frequency domain. Based on this property, the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is utilized to separate the CD profile from noise and the MD variations. The performance of this method is verified through comprehensive simulation tests and is compared with existing wavelet and exponential filters. It is shown that the suggested method has better per formance in simulation scenarios. This is further validated by applying the method to industrial data. In the second part of this thesis, a novel picketing detection method is devel oped. The picketing pattern is associated with growing components in the spectrum of actuator profiles. A conventional change detection algorithm, CUSUM, is applied to detect these growing components. The method is verified in two simulation scenarios. It is shown that this method can detect and predict a picketing pattern before any picketing pattern is visible on the raw profile.

Ground based radars often experience difficulties in target detection and direction finding (DF) applications due to the interference between the direct and surface reflected signals when the targets fly at low altitudes. In this thesis, the phenomena governing the low angle propagation are overviewed and a multipath signal model including the effects of refraction, specular reflection, diffuse reflection, curvature of the earth and antenna polarization is presented. Then, the model is utilized to develop detection and DF algorithms for the targets at low altitudes. The target detection algorithm aims to increase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to overcome the effects of signal fading caused by surface reflections. The algorithm is based on diversity combining and the combining weight vector is calculated by maximizing average value of SNR. The technique is compared with Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) algorithm which is optimal in terms of SNR. In direction finding, it is the height of the target that is explored since the target range information is obtained from the time delay. The target height is estimated by utilizing Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). The performance of our algorithm is compared with that of the technique that is known in the literature as Refined Maximum Likelihood (RML).

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ability to perceive pitch direction across a variety of melodic contours differs across grade levels. In addition, differences between responses to ascending versus descending patterns and between responses to two- versus three- versus four-note patterns were examined.
The main study involved two experiments; Experiment 1 examined children's ability to identify pitch direction using a visual aid; Experiment 2 examined children's spontaneous notations of the same melodic contours.
The results showed a subsequent increase in mean scores from grades 1 to 6 across both tests. The clearest increase in ability occurred within the first three grades with a plateau reached by grade four. Same-pitch patterns received the highest overall means. The ability to identify direction using a visual aid was easier for children than to write spontaneous notations. Melodic contours with larger intervals were more easily perceived.

This study explored undergraduate music majors' strategies in two-part dictation. Sixty volunteers answered a questionnaire on their musical background, learning styles, and dictation methods. They then took part in three dictation sessions. Two sessions directed attention to rhythm first or pitch first, and one session was a non-directed control dictation. Treatments were counterbalanced across 6 groups (n = 10). Dependent measures were pitch and rhythm accuracy scores on dictations. Analysis of variance showed no order effects. A repeated measures MANOVA (pitch and rhythm by 3 conditions) showed a significant effect for condition ($p < .0001$). Higher rhythm accuracy resulted from the rhythm-first condition, compared to the non-directed ($p < .05$) and pitch-first ($p < .0001$) conditions. Pitch accuracy was not affected by condition. Accuracy was unrelated to any of the covariates examined (instrumental information, years of theory and counterpoint study, keyboard skill, learning style and private strategy). Results suggest that in polyphonic dictation, attending to rhythm first and pitch afterwards may be an effective way of maximizing rhythmic accuracy.

Human control of locomotion relies heavily upon vision. Through our eyes we sample information about the illuminated environment that aids us in moving skilfully through it. The exact visual information that supports control of high-speed locomotion around bends has been a matter of debate. Two models of steering (the Tangent Point and Active Gaze model) propose different visual inputs to enable this process. In two studies (Chapter 2) these models were tested against each other, and it was found that humans look at points on their future path (consistent with the Active Gaze model). Not only do participants look where they want to go (Chapters 2 & 3), but they go where they look (Chapter 4), even when there is an additional cognitive load at the point of fixation (Chapter 7). However, gaze direction is not the sole source of information when steering: visual direction and optic flow may also play a role. Three experiments (Chapters 3, 4, & 5) highlight the importance of the visual direction information provided by road-edges. When information from road-edges was strong (Chapters 4 & 5) gaze direction ceased to bias steering. Optic flow also caused systematic steering biases when the temporal and spatial flow characteristics from regions either side of the bending roadway were manipulated (Chapter 6). Two distinct behaviours were elicited by humans steering in the presence of optic flow asymmetries: i) steering was biased towards one region in order to equalise asymmetries, and ii) oversteer increased at higher perceived speeds averaged across global flow asymmetries. The observed interaction between flow, road- edges and gaze direction is indicative of the visuomotor-control system's propensity to use multiple sources of information in a flexible manner according to information quality and availability.

The new Bluetooth standard (Bluetooth 5.1) contains direction finding specifications. Specifications for received signal strength indicator(RSSI) using measures of signal strength in order to give a sense of how far away an object is has been present in earlier versions. It will now be accompanied with the possibility of angle of arrival estimation(AoA). AoA estimation in Bluetooth utilizes antenna arrays. Antenna arrays are formations of many individual antenna elements working together. The difference between the measured data at each antenna is dependent on the orientation and position of the antenna elements as well as on phase of an incoming electromagnetic signal. By looking at the phase shifts between the antenna elements in an antenna array it is possible to find an estimation of the direction of where the incoming signal is coming from.  The goal of this thesis is to investigate if the NicheTM antenna(concept developed by Proant AB) is applicable for AoA estimation. In the project we have simulated the different characteristics of the Niche antenna and done extensive simulations of different types of configurations of an Niche antenna array. The commercial electromagnetics simulator CST MW studio suite has been used for simulations. A formation that works well with regards to stability and mutual coupling has been found. The simulated results have also been confirmed by measurements on a mechanically constructed antenna array. Measurements have been carried out in an anechoic chamber. We have done full radiation pattern measurements of the antenna array. The antenna array that we have created can estimate the angle of arrival of an incoming signal with an accuracy of 2.7o with a certainty of one standard deviation. For increased accuracy in the AoA estimation a MATLAB code utilizing the MUSIC(MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm with our variant of the steering vector has been written.
