Streszczenie:
My thesis gives insight on directing a main stage production at the collegiate level as a student. Specifically directing Tradin’ Paint, an original piece from playwright Catherine Bush a native of Abingdon Virginia, and a company playwright for the Barter Theatre. In the thesis I discuss how I arrived at different conclusions for my show through different research. I discuss the experience of being a director over professors, and my own peers, and how all of these challenges and discoveries eventually gave me a finished product to be proud of. If a director were to look at this work, they will find chapter two interesting, as it is my prompt book, with blocking and little notes on the script. This thesis is a great representation of a student directing thesis: Directing a Main stage Show.

The challenges of producing and directing small professional theatre in any metropolitan area are many. This thesis is concerned with the process of finding a producing theatre, casting, rehearsal and staging the play, "Nothing Sacred" by George F. Walker, in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Unlike many thesis projects this one was conducted completely outside of the university setting and is thus a true reflection of the small professional theatre community.

Streszczenie:
This thesis documents the directorial preparation and rehearsal process for the production of Euripides Medea, produced at the TELUS theatre, January 2009, as the thesis requirement for an MFA in Directing from the Theatre Department of the University of British Columbia. Included are a script analysis of the Kenneth McLeish translation of Medea, a rehearsal journal, and an essay examining the role and intervention of the gods in Euripides’ Medea. This production was framed as a re-enactment by the household staff of Jason and Medea. The appendix includes a storyboard script for the household characters written by the director. The bibliography includes sources used by the director for script analysis research. Challenges in staging Medea include the deus ex machina, the child actors and staging the Greek Chorus. An essential question explored in this production is the character of Medea and whether the audience is to consider her as a monster or as a human. This production explored the deus ex machina as an act of grace, signaling that the gods transcend societal codes of justice, and that Euripides offers the image of a complex woman, struggling and stumbling towards the divine.

Streszczenie:
This is an exploration of the director's role in autobiographical theatre. The director is in a unique position when storytelling on a personal level is being executed theatrically. I explored this topic over the course of directing three plays, each of which contained a strong personal storytelling element, which broadened my perspective of the director's role. The three plays were Slashtipher Coleman’s The Neon Man and Me, Birth by Karen Brody, and Will Power to Youth Richmond presents: William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Traditionally, the director’s role includes a myriad of tasks. These tasks can include and are not limited to creating pictures on stage that reflect the story being told, coaching actors in their craft specific to the production, vocal and movement coaching, viii creating a concept, interpreting and translating the action, and being the intermediary amongst the creative team in reaching the overall artistic vision. However, when the director is presented with personal stories to shape and mold, this role changes; no longer can the director wear a traditional hat and assume that the story will tell itself through a series of pictures, but now the director dons different hats and accesses other skills that more closely reflect those of mentor, spiritual leader, psychologist, teacher, and friend. This thesis is a narrative of the explorative process that one director experienced when staging these three prototypes of autobiographical theatre.

Richard III is regarded as one of Shakespeare's longest and most complex plays, with a complicated plot, and a character that is a Machiavellian villain. After a workshop of Act I as an MFA Directing Project, I was granted by Temple University to stage a full production of Richard III as my thesis. Approaching the play proved difficult for me due to my lack of experience with Shakespearean text. However, by analyzing Shakespeare's text, and approaching the adaptation with the goal to make the story as clear as possible, I desired to create a production that embodied the idea of "now." The designed team and I created a world that was a-historic pulling from classic and modern forms that provided the necessary landscape for the play to occur. Through a series of seven chapters I explain my process from conception to production. I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement. A Director's Script, Actor's Lexicon, Program Note, Design Renderings and Production Photos support my journey to opening night of Richard III.

My aim was to explore the ways in which one could direct children's theatre for the purposes of education, entertainment and vocation. This paper covers the theoretical side of my studies, working from theories on education, direction and Theatre in Education. From these three theoretical bases, I have developed a working theory for myself centred on a concept of "creative learning.' I have also provided documentation of my work in the field with three organisations - Barking Gecko Children's Theatre Company, the Murdoch Children's Performing Group and Thornlie Primary School. This documentation covers the work I was engaged in, my aims and objectives and the processes I encountered/employed, including examples of how my own theory was put into practice, and the successes and failures of that practice.

Towards Directing: A film editor’s journey’ represents the exegetical component of this PhD by project. It is written to accompany the short fiction film that forms the practical component and is integral to the work. The text discusses the challenges encountered by a film editor attempting the task of directing a short film. It is concerned with differences between the two roles and how these differences shape the experience of a seasoned editor attempting the journey. The exegesis is structured into chapters that relate to the process of making the film: Scripting, Preproduction, Production and Postproduction. It begins by investigating the roles of editors and directors and spaces where they intersect. It goes on to examine my journey through each of these production processes. The influences of other filmmakers are discussed, particularly those who began their careers as editors. The exegesis concludes with a reflection on my journey through the process of directing the short film project, and how my progress was influenced by my editing background. The text ends with a commitment to pursue further directing experiences despite the intense pressure and frequent uncertainty involved.

The following presents an investigation into questions of spatial direction and continuity. This includes the directing of people via a choreographed sequence of architectural spaces through a site and a building. It further investigates a concept of continuity at various scales. A proposal for an art gallery in downtown Washington DC becomes the vehicle of exploration. The urban scale of this proposal seeks a continuity of relevant existing conditions while also creating opportunities to experience the city as well as the gallery. A serpentine-like continuous band or ribbon becomes the physical element responsible for direction and continuity for the building itself.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate mechanisms involved in activating gene expression in a distinct neuronal sub-population. As a model system, I have chosen the GABAA receptor α6 subunit gene. Within the whole brain, α6 gene expression is restricted to differentiated cereballar granule cells and the lineage-related granule cells in the cochlear nucleus. I searched for regulatory elements using constructs derived from regions within the α6 gene in a transgenic mouse assay, linking these regions to the β-galactosidase reporter gene to assay for transcriptional activity. A 7.2 kb DNA fragment containing a 1 kb portion upstream of the start site(s), together with exons 1-8, directs cerebellar granule cell-specific reporter gene expression. Truncated versions of this 7.2 kb transgene were analysed; none of these smaller transgenes gave consistent granule cell-specific expression. As an adjunct to identify cerebellar granule cell-specific DNA elements, a comparative approach was employed. If the expression pattern of the α6 gene is conserved in evolutionary distant species, then sequences involved in spatially regulating this gene expression may also be conserved. I cloned α6 cDNA homologues in distant species (goldfish and chicken) and showed that α6 expression was restricted to cerebellar granule cells. Comparative genome sequencing was used to look for conserved DNA regions outside the coding region of the α6 gene. The chicken and pufferfish α6 gene structures were mapped and the corresponding regions of the mouse, chicken and pufferfish genomic clones were sequenced. Two small regions of sequence identity were identified in the 5' proximal area in all three species. These regions could be binding sites for transcription factors. Cerebellar granule cell precursors can switch on the α6 gene ectopically. This implies that α6 gene expression is cell-intrinsically regulated.

Smale, Bernard. "Deathwork : a sociological analysis of funeral directing". Thesis, University of Surrey, 1985. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/848036/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Funeral directing is a service occupation seeking to sell skills for income. Directors offer to act as caretaker of the dead and to construct a fitting disposal ceremony - the funeral ritual. This is a most significant symbolic act, yet little is known about the people into whose care the duty is entrusted. Their services are almost universally employed and they perform their most important activities in full public view, yet their work-routines, attitudes and aims are a matter for conjecture. No sociological study of the occupation has been undertaken in the United Kingdom. This research investigates both proprietors and workers by observation, participation, in-depth interviewing, historical analysis and cross-cultural comparison. It utilises a Symbolic Interactionist perspective and a Dramaturgical focus, and employs a conflict model of social control to examine the form of constraint experienced by members. An ethnography of funeral work is presented and the development of a funeral director is described. The study is interpretive, examining the manner in which occupational roles are conceived and presented, and the type of client-relationships developed by funeral services. The historical development of 18th Century tradesmen to contemporary entrepreneurs is traced and the rewards available to successful contenders is assessed. The search for collective occupational status in the United Kingdom is compared to that already achieved in Newfoundland, and the ambivalence attached to the performance of funeral directing in the United Kingdom is outlined. The occupation is shown to be a successful example of a capitalist free-market business enterprise, in which goods and services are sold to customers for profit. Overt commercialism is concealed behind a claimed professionalism to reduce client unease concerning the appropriate role for those who handle the dead on their behalf. The occupation is characterised by high profits, secure market, competitive individualism, dominance of small family businesses, weak collegiate control, low level of occupation specialism and unsophisticated intellectual knowledge. Present market dominance is unlikely to face challenge in the foreseeable future, but continued market monopoly will not necessarily erradicate current status ambiguity.

Background: Directing autogenous Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) to defect sites has a great promise in bone regeneration. We designed a MSC specific, bone affinity peptide (E7HA7) by conjugating E7 with a polyglutamate hydroxyapatite (HA) binding motif. We sought to characterize the in-vivo releasing pattern and bioactivity of E7HA7. Methods: HA discs were coated with fluorescent labeled peptides E7HA7, E7HA2 or E7 were subcutaneously implanted in Sprague Dawley rats. In an ectopic bone formation model was used to test the in-vivo bioactivity of E7HA7 conjugated to DBM. Results: E7HA7 showed slower peptide release from scaffolds in comparison to other groups, being statistically significant at week 2 compared to E7, and to E7HA2 at week 4 and 8. In ectopic model, the medians for new bone formation in each group were: iDBM=0.041mm3, iDBM-E7=0.071mm3, aDBM=0.138mm3, and aDBM-E7=0.192mm3. Conclusions: Conjugation of E7 to polyglutamate bone binding domain showed slow releasing kinetics and osteoinductive potential.

Streszczenie:
This practice-led PhD research is an in-depth exploration into the field of theatre directing. The thesis is presented in three components: an exegesis and a two-part original creative work. Conducted over three phases, the study investigated how a culturally displaced individual (a product of the Armenian diaspora) may find a sense of identity through theatre directing and address the internal struggles of belonging, acceptance and self that are often experienced by those who have confronted cultural unhoming. Embarking on a career in theatre directing, while exciting, can often be a daunting and experimental vocation. Renowned Australian director Gale Edwards (as cited in P. Ward, 1988) suggested that being a director can often be a very difficult job. It is lonely, isolating, you are attacked by critics, and you are responsible if anything goes wrong and forgotten when everything goes right. In contradiction to Edward’s thoughts, evidence shows that within the past decade there has been a growing interest in the vocation of theatre directing. I asked, in a competitive artistic profession that is rapidly developing, what attracts an individual to the authoritative role of the director and what are the underlying motivations of this attraction? The first two stages of the study probed into my incentives as a Persian-Armenian-Australian actor turned director, and then queried the provocations of other theatre directors in a similar predicament. Initial interviews with the directors provided detailed accounts of how they embarked on the profession of theatre directing and insight into their motivations for doing so. The second phase of interviews investigated the director’s role more deeply, focusing primarily and acutely on the activity of directing. The purpose of this phase was to uncover whether, consciously or unconsciously, the activity of directing is a reflection of the individual’s sense of self. The final stage of the study is a creative project that is presented in two parts: a children’s book and an immersive Theatre in Education performance, titled The Special Team Elite. Utilising my creativity as a director and storyteller, these components explored my personal familiarities with cultural prejudice. The significance of this research lies in its innovative approach to the field of theatre directing that addresses cultural effects relating to individuals who have struggled with ethnic identity and displacement. By uncovering that there is more to the role of the director than the mere finality of a production, we can observe that the theatre is a promising setting for cultural exchanges in dialogue and for personal development. Theatre directing as the vehicle for these expansions and progressions of self can potentially address the internal struggles of identity often experienced by those who, in some form, have encountered cultural displacement.

Blood vessels are essential for the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to tissues, as well as for the removal of waste products. Patients with tumors, wounds or diabetes all have active angiogenesis, formation and remodeling of blood vessels, a process that is initiated and manipulated by gradients of secreted signaling proteins. This thesis describes the development of new microfluidic in vitro assays where directed migration of single endothelial cells and three dimensional vascular structures can be monitored in real time. Combining these assays with live imaging microscopy we have studied the behavior of endothelial cells in gradients of proangiogenic factors as well as directed sprouting in embryonic kidneys and stem cell cultures. With the 2D assay we have quantified endothelial cell chemotaxis towards FGF2, VEGFA165 and VEGFA121 and we also demonstrate that constant levels of VEGFA165, but not of FGF2, are able to reduce chemokinesis of endothelial cells. In the 3D migration chamber we have studied directed endothelial cell sprouting in mouse embryonic kidneys and embryoid bodies in response to VEGFA gradients. In both models directed angiogenesis is detected towards increasing levels of growth factor. Using the microarray technique on differentiating embryonic stem cells we have been able to identify the gene exoc3l2 as potentially involved in angiogenesis and endothelial cell migration and we present evidence that ExoC3l2 is associated with the exocyst complex; an important regulator of cell polarity. We have also shown that siRNA mediated gene silencing of exoc3l2 results in impaired VEGFR2 phosphorylation as well as loss of directionality in response to a VEGFA gradient.

The Fluidity of Collaboration: Directing Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice explores the development of my directorial practice as I directed Eurydice in the UBC Department of Theatre and Film 2015-2016 season January 21 – February 6, 2016 at the Frederick Wood Theatre. The first sections of this document consists of the original script analysis I submitted as the basis for the production. This analysis traces my thinking about the play from first impressions and dominant images, through character and structural breakdown, the given circumstances of production and my intended approach to the text. The second section describes the process of producing the play, from the initial design concept meetings, the design refinement, budgeting and finalization process, casting, rehearsals and production. The bulk of this thesis, the second section focuses on how collaboration with designers, actors, coaches, stage management and technicians changed my thinking about the play. I also discuss the challenges that we faced through the design and rehearsal process, and how I attempted to overcome these challenges. The third section is a self evaluation, written after the run of Eurydice. In the evaluation, I compare my original intentions to the reality of the production, note the elements of the production I thought were generally successful, and examine the less successful aspects of the play. Specifically, I note the way that collaboration with the team of theatre artists that brought Eurydice to the stage changed my initial vision for the play. This collaborative effort brought many exciting and innovative ideas to the show, but it also diluted some of the thematic content I wanted to forward. Thus the overall question of this thesis is an exploration of the impact of collaboration on theatre creation.

Streszczenie:
Using the social model of disability as a catalyst, this practice as research project starts with the understanding that theatre can disable some of its spectators. Contemporary theatre is conventionally visual. If a theatregoer has low or no vision she or he can be disable by theatre. An investigation of historic directing practice and dramaturgy will demonstrate an ocular bias in contemporary performance. A theatre director is in a unique position to counter this bias and influence opening performance to those with visual impairments or blindness. The idea of blind spectatorship is a provocation for directors and theatre makers. What are popular and experiential definitions of blindness and how might these ideas influence conceptions of an audience? How does theatre disable someone with low or no-vision? What can a director do to open performance to a blind or visually impaired spectator? Audio description interviews with audience members and access specialists, the practice of theatre companies like Extant and Graeae and an Affirmative Model of Disability frame and inform this study. It will be argued that access strategies for the visually impaired or blind, outside of a very few companies, are not widely considered within an artistic purview. This thesis aims to place these access responsibilities firmly within a director’s control and considerations. By locating this study in my own directing practice, I can demonstrate how performance can be opened to a broader audience. Four fully produced stage plays covering a range of performance styles (kōläzh, 2006; Foto, 2010; In the Tunnel, 2010; Variations on the Death of Trotsky, 2012) and several laboratory experiments focused on elements of staging, production, directorial intent and perceptive intersections of access are used to question and exhibit the findings of this study. Sonic dramaturgy emerges as a particularly useful tool for theatre makers and an economic and scalable balance to visual conventions.

Streszczenie:
Self-assembly of molecular building blocks has attracted increasing interest as an effective bottom-up approach for the design of functional nanomaterials. Amongst the variety of known molecular building blocks, very short (di- and tri-) peptides and their derivatives are of particular relevance in this context due to their chemical simplicity, low cost and remarkable properties. In this thesis, we first investigate the behaviour of the well-known self-assembling dipeptide diphenylalanine (FF) and its amidated derivative (FF-NH2) in a predominantly aqueous environment. We demonstrate that these molecules can form metastable hydrogels upon a combination of solvent switching and sonication of the dipeptide solutions. The hydrogels show instantaneous syneresis upon mechanical contact resulting in rapid expulsion of water and collapse into a semi-solid gel. Thanks to the highlyhydrophobic nature of the fibres formed, the gels can be employed as selective scavengers for small hydrophobic molecules. Combining biocatalysis and molecular self-assembly provides an effective approach for processing of self-assembled materials, directing the assembly kinetics by means of catalysis which results in the controlled formation of hierarchical nanostructures. Herein, we investigate the possibility to achieve localised self-assembly of peptide derivatives exploiting different strategies to immobilize enzymes, thereby adding spatial control over the self-assembly process. We functionalised surfaces with bioinspired polydopamine and polyphenol coatings to study the effects of enzyme surface localisation and surface release on the self-assembly process. We demonstrate how these coatings could be conveniently used to release protease enzyme thermolysin into a pre-gelator (Fmoc-T and F-NH2) solution for bulk gelation as well as to irreversibly immobilize the enzyme for localizing the self-assembly to the surface. Enzyme-(magnetic)nanoparticle conjugates were employed to trigger the self-assembly and gelation of peptide derivatives in two different systems, an equilibrium system and a far from equilibrium one. For both systems, the self-assembly results in the formation of stable hydrogels. We were able to visualise the self-assembled nanostructures at the site of enzyme immobilization by electron microscopy. Moreover, employing magnetic nanoparticles allows for an additional level of control on the properties of the hydrogels, which can be manipulated with an external magnetic field. Finally, we employed a soft-lithographic technique (microcontact printing) to transfer a pattern of enzymes onto a modified substrate. The surfaces with the patterned thermolysin were used to trigger the localized formation of the gelator Fmoc-TF-NH2 through direct condensation of two non-assembling precursors Fmoc-T and F-NH2. Fluorescence microscopy was employed to confirm the localized formation of self-assembled structure by staining the β-sheet fibres with Thioflavin T. The thesis concludes with a number of overall conclusions that can be drawn from the work presented, as well as some possible directions for future work.

[image] The proposed biogenesis of the ladder polyethers features a dramatic series of epoxide opening reactions, elegantly accounts for the structural and stereochemical features of all related natural products, and, in principle, could significantly simplify the synthesis of these extraordinarily complex molecules. In practice, however, such cascades are strongly disfavored, and non-natural directing groups must be covalently attached to each epoxide to overcome this inherent bias. We report herein a general method for directing group-free cascades that also supports the postulated biosynthesis. The two salient aspects of this strategy are a single design principle (a template) and a promoter that both donates and accepts hydrogen bonds. Water is the superior promoter, and it is most effective at approximately pH 7.

Chapter 1. Directing groups are a powerful means of controlling the selectivity in reactions. The field of hydroformylation has used directing group strategies to control regio- and diastereoselectivity with much success. However, directing groups are inherently inefficient as they must be installed and removed from the molecule of interest, and generate a stoichiometric byproduct in the process. Strategies to solve this problem have included the use of exchange reactions that allow for transient binding of substrate to a molecule that can direct the course of the reaction. This allows the use of catalytic quantities of the directing functionality to effect the desired transformation, and obviates the need for installation and removal of the directing functionality in separate steps. Chapter 2. Our lab has developed a phosphorous based ligand that incorporates an N,O-acetal moiety that allows for reversible binding of both alcohol substrates and a metal catalyst. These ligands rapidly exchange with alcohols in the presence of catalytic amounts of p-TsOH. The racemic ligand was found to undergo epimerization on exchange with a chiral alcohol in an effort to isolate enantioenriched material. However, a strategy using a thermodynamic gearing effect of adjacent stereocenters was found to be successful in producing a chiral ligand. Chapter 3. Using catalytic quantities of our scaffolding ligand we are able to effect branch- and diastereoselective hydroformylation of homoallylic alcohols. We offer a model based on A1,3 strain for the origin of the diastereoselectivity, and tested substrates to lend support to the model. We also investigated the use of chiral scaffolding ligands in the enantioselective hydroformylation of homoallylic alcohols, and preliminary results show modest enantioselectivity. Chapter 4. We have expanded the substrate scope of our scaffolding ligand strategy to include the hydroformylation of allylic alcohols. We are able to produce β-hydroxy carbonyl compounds in good yields and with excellent selectivities, which offers an alternative to the formaldehyde aldol reaction. We show that our strategy is successful in the hydroformylation of trisubstituted olefins, which are a difficult class of hydroformylation substrates, where we are able to produce single diastereomers in good yields under mild conditions. We investigated the enantioselective hydroformylation of allylic alcohols and found that while racemization may be a problem with these substrates, in-situ hemi-acetal protection may offer a solution to the problem

Streszczenie:
In 1983 Merriam published a critical review of mentoring literature. Since that time a preponderance of mentoring literature has continued to flow. The purpose of this study was to expand on Merriam's article with a critical literature review of mentoring literature published since 1983. Additionally, this study built upon Merriam's work by focusing on the dynamics of the mentoring relationship as it applies to career development in the business community. Merriam's four criticisms were reviewed and revealed only minor changes since 1983. The literature review was augmented with interviews in the business community in order to look at how mentoring is currently practiced in the field. The interviews consisted of both open and closed-ended questions, which were qualitatively analyzed. After conducting the interview phase of this study, it became apparent that mentoring is valued and respected within the business community as a career development and succession planning strategy. However, it is also apparent that further research is needed with a larger population of diverse organizations. Additional evaluation of organizational dynamics mentoring program goals needs to be further examined in order to validate the viability of mentoring as a career development resource. A concluding section highlights areas for future research on mentoring.

Streszczenie:

Within the discipline of information systems sometimes the conception of the main object is that the information system must be computer based. An example of an information system that is non-computer based is the scenic theatre performance. Input is the message or knowledge the participants of the theatre production want to pass over to the audience; output is the information and experiences the performance in itself mediates to the audience. This has been produced through a system development process; although the developers not always have been aware about what development model has been used.

The dissertation combines some of the concepts found in theatre production with traditional system development concepts, and hence introduces new perspectives into the area of information systems. Some of the main findings in the study of theatre productions were the triplicity of a theatre production as a development process, an information system and an organization at the same time; the integrated relations of context, developers and users, which leads to spontaneous changes and overlaps of development roles; and the narrative and dramaturgical approach in the practical use of methods and techniques.

These aspects should be useful also in development of other types of information systems, whether computer based or using other information technologies. The triplicity gives arguments to redefine each of these concepts.

The generalizability of this approach has been validated through a second study, at a folk high school, which showed that models and concepts from theatre productions are possible to generalize to other information system areas than theatre, and that the borders of the organization coincides with the borders of the information system. Especially temporary organizations must be seen as ongoing, continuous development processes.

Starting with a group of lightning researchers, planetarium staff, and visualization specialists, an academically diverse group was formed through a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a planetarium show on lightning. The show target audience is middle school aged children. The goal of the show is to teach lightning safety and lightning facts in an immersive environment. Through the use of video, an animated character, and a meteorologist, the curriculum is presented to the audience. I fulfilled the roles of producer and director through all aspects of production. My role also included maintaining group organization and communication throughout show production. This paper discusses my experiences in producing Enlightening Lightning! by starting with outlining the curriculum and finishing with putting it all together at the planetarium. The goal of this paper is to discuss the techniques and organizational methods used to manage a diverse group and produce a multimedia show.

Dean, Janice Louise. "Directing public companies : company law and the stakeholder society". Thesis, Brunel University, 2000. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5289.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the legal duties of directors of UK public companies in the light of the 'stakeholder' approach to the firm. It considers the theory that directors are not simply agents of shareholders, but have a duty to take into consideration and, where appropriate, to balance the interests of several constituencies. Examples of suggested stakeholders include employees, customers, suppliers and creditors, as well as the local community and the natural environment. If this broad view of public company responsibility is warranted, the role of the law in securing a 'stakeholder' style of management needs to be examined, and this study attempts that task. To this end, empirical research was conducted via interviews with public company directors and secretaries from a range of public companies of different sizes operating in many business sectors to investigate: • the extent to which at present they view their role as requiring assessment and inclusion of the interests of stakeholders • the manner in which such assessment and inclusion is actually carried out • the impact which a statutory formulation of duties to incorporate stakeholder interests would or might have on decisionmaking in practice • the effect of board structure on corporate decisionmaking. The effect of 'stakeholder orientation' of company directors on the economic performance and social impact of UK public companies was considered. The DTI's Company Law Review Steering Group has referred to the distinction between 'Enlightened Shareholder Value' and the 'Pluralist' approach. This thesis further reviews those arguments and seeks to set them in their commercial context. It is highly probable that there will be a new UK Companies Act following the next General Election. This thesis suggests a new statutory statement of directors' duties and considers the impact which such statutory wording might have. If directors' legal duties were to be reformulated, that change would needs to buttressed by a mechanism to protect stakeholder expectations, in court as a last resort. This thesis argues that the most promising form for such stakeholder remedies is that of the current 'unfair prejudice' action. If the UK is to avoid being left behind internationally in its system of corporate regulation, it needs to take its European Union obligations and the laws of other Member States into account. It is argued that the UK can find much to learn from the continental European traditions. The conclusion of the thesis focuses on the Company Law Review and its potential economic impact. It is argued that UK company law should address the rights of all stakeholders if it is to be ‘modern’ and ‘competitive’.

As You Like It is regarded as one of Shakespeare's mature comedies in that he combines both serious and comic subject matter. Hired by Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in Vancouver, Canada, I was granted permission by Temple University to submit this production as my thesis. Approaching the play from an objective perspective proved initially difficult due to the vast multitude of research materials and my personal experience of having twice performed in the play. However, by analyzing Shakespeare's text, and approaching the play from the ending first, I was able to discover my unique conceit on directing the play. Set during the English Civil War, I was able to establish the necessary two worlds of the play, a Puritan Court and an English Cavalier Forest of Arden. Through a series of six chapters I explain my process from conception to production, as well, I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement. A Director's Script, Costume Sketches, an early Set Design and Reviews support my journey to Opening Night of As You Like It.
