Streszczenie:
Abstract Although past studies have found that processes of urban shrinkage may act as a catalyst for socio-economic segregation, these relationships remain underexplored outside the context of large cities and capitals. Moreover, cities at lower-tiers of the urban hierarchy in post-socialist Europe have been doubly excluded from the critical discourse on the socio-spatial effects of shrinkage. Hence, this article examines how shrinkage affects socio-economic segregation in the medium-sized post-socialist city of Schwerin, employing segregation indices to assess levels of spatial unevenness and location quotients to map intra-urban patterns of vulnerable population groups over time. Results indicate processes of shrinkage may exacerbate socio-economic segregation in medium-sized cities and that the spatial heterogeneity of shrinkage intersects with uneven distributions of affluence and poverty. However, suggesting that legacies of state socialism shape contemporary socio-spatial change, segregation in Schwerin is strongly conditioned by its socialist-era housing estates, which are generally characterised by the highest rates of population decline, vacancy, and vulnerable groups.

This article questions the strict parallelism of demographic and economic development in characterising urban shrinkage in Germany. As the cases of several Ruhr cities and East German cities prove, urban economic growth can be achieved thanks to the substantial presence of modern industries and business services, and despite declines in population size. Serious shrinkages of Halle, Cottbus and Schwerin are primarily due to failures in the post-industrial transformation process. Recent policy measures strongly oriented towards slowing the downsizing process of population (via e.g. urban regeneration strategies) do not appear to be sufficient for achieving urban resurgence in these cities. More active industrial policy measures are required there to create a competitive high-tech manufacturing sector, to stimulate innovation activities and to boost its growth interdependence with modern local services and R&D infrastructure.

Due to the special situation of Poles in Germany after the end of the Second World War and the need to provide them with pastoral care, an Ordinariate for Poles in Germany was established as a personal diocese by a decision of the Holy See on 5 June 1945. In a relatively short period of time and despite very difficult conditions, it was possible to organise effective pastoral structures. The main burden of work rested with the parishes, whose numbers began to dwindle over time as the number of Poles in Germany decreased. In connection with the new legislation on the pastoral care of migrants, in 1976 the former personal diocese for Poles was transformed into the Polish Catholic Mission in Germany. This was also accompanied by a change in the status of the priest in charge of Polish pastoral ministry in Germany. The new structures proved to be adequate for the pastoral challenges that arose later and, as a result, the Polish Catholic Mission in Germany has been able to develop to this day.

Background The BEAULI -method (Breast Augmentation by Lipotransfer) is available for extraction and processing of large transplantable fat quantities. The aim of this work is to describe the surgical technique precisely and reproducibly and to provide an overview of the autologous fat transfer based on surgical experience. Method The author performed 300 autologous fat transplantations on 254 women between September 3, 2010, and May 13, 2015. Patients desiring moderate volume increase, fuller and firmer breasts, as well as an optimization of the silhouette, ideally with the concurrent desire of the correction of unwanted fat deposits, were selected. The fat was extracted via water-jet assisted liposuction (Body-jet, Human Med AG, Schwerin, Germany), and the fat cells were subsequently separated with the Lipocollector® (Human Med AG, Schwerin, Germany). Results The results were assessed with a control exam and photo comparison and were based on the responses on a questionnaire. Overall, 35.9% of the patients defined the result as very good, 38.6% as good, 22.4% as satisfactory, and 3.1% as poor. Conclusion This study shows that the autologous fat cell transplantation into the female breast via water-jet assisted liposuction achieves a moderate and harmoniously appearing breast volume enlargement as well as contour improvement. Further studies with more cases and longer observation periods over several years could contribute to improving the method of the autologous fat transfer regarding the grow-in rate, efficiency, and safety.

Recently, several case studies have demonstrated the presence of human radiocarbon dietary reservoir effects in inland contexts. Freshwater reservoir effects present a high degree of variability, making it difficult to define local reservoir effect reference values necessary for correcting chronologies based on 14C dating of human bone material. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that 14C ages of edible freshwater species are delimited by the 14C ages of the main water carbon pools (DIC, POC, and DOC).Water, plant, algae, bivalve, and fish samples were collected from lakes Schwerin and Ostorf (Germany). 14C and isotopic measurements were performed on the floral and faunal species and on water DIC, POC, and DOC. The results demonstrate the potential of the study area for large and variable freshwater reservoir effects. In the case of Lake Schwerin, the working hypothesis was verified as the 14C ages of faunal and floral species were delimited by the 14C ages of water DIC and POC, probably associated with 2 extreme categories of food chains (grazing and detritus). While the results obtained confirm the working hypothesis and suggest a relatively straightforward interpretation, further research is necessary to investigate possible spatial and seasonal variations.

Popular Marian devotion played a vital role in the Catholic Church of Germany during the early modern period, especially during the “golden age of religious revival” experienced by post-Tridentine, baroque popular Catholicism. For example, at least ninety-seven local Marian shrines scattered throughout the diocese of Augsburg attracted pilgrims in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The most famous was certainly Andechs, which drew half a million visitors each year in the seventeenth century from all over the Holy Roman Empire. In turn, Catholics from the diocese of Augsburg traveled beyond the bishopric's borders to major and minor shrines near and far, such as Altötting in Bavaria. Yet while major sites dedicated to the Virgin Mary such as Andechs and Altötting reflected theintensityof ongoing popular Marian devotions, thebreadthof the Virgin Mary's cultural significance is signaled by the large number of Marian shrines within the diocese itself, such as Kobel or Violau, which were mostly small, local affairs that attracted primarily nearby populations as pilgrims and supplicants.

One of the most important and influential Catholic laymen of the nineteenth century was Ambrose Phillipps who in 1862 added de Lisle to his name and so is usually known as Ambrose Phillipps de Lisle. Born in 1809 an Anglican, he was received into the Catholic Church in 1825. In 1833 he married Laura Clifford, a member of one of the oldest recusant families in England and, although they were destined to have a large family, it did not impede their efforts to promote the conversion of the Midlands to Catholicism. Laura was born in Germany at Mecklenberg-Schwerin on 26 October 1811, where her father, Thomas Clifford, fourth son of Hugh, fourth Lord Clifford, was chamberlain to the Duke of Mecklenberg-Schwerin. Thomas died when Laura was only five years old and her mother did not live much longer, dying in 1822, when Laura was eleven. In 1823, Lord Clifford of Ugbrooke and Chudleigh in Devon became her guardian and entrusted her education to the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre at New Hall, near Chelmsford, Essex. She remained there until 27 June 1829 when she returned to live with her guardian at Ugbrooke. In 1831, she met Ambrose and two years later they married on 25 July 1833 at St. James’ Spanish Place, while the civil ceremony took place at St. George’s, Hanover Square.

Based on static data, changes in the diocese of the Masurian Evangelical-Augsburg Church were caused by the mass movement of Lutheran people to both German states. The number of faithful in the diocese decreased by 41.8% (from 39,811 to around 23,200), the parish council disintegrated, and the diocese’s income fell drastically (although the percentage of Church contributions paid by the faithful remained at the previous level). Along with the faithful, seven priests went to Germany; two state authorities were removed from the Masurian territories because of their pro-German views. 1959 is also a time of intensified efforts by the state authorities to procure the rectory and other non-religious buildings from the Church, which greatly undermined the Church’s pastoral and social work, and undermined the material basis of its existence.

“All children must be educated to become worthwhile people“, GDR Minister of Education from 1963 to 1989 Margot Honecker claimed. Liberal youth sociologists interpret adolescence as moratorium, indicating that youth need latitude to challenge current social, political, and moral norms, and to test autonomous life choices, without being responsible for their actions in the same way as adults. In the GDR adolescents were judged based on how closely they matched the ideal of the “generally cultured socialist personality”. According to Honecker, the proper development of the individual would only be possible in communism. Maturation of the individual was not a value for her. Political compliance was demanded in all adolescent life worlds and latitudes for self-development were delineated materially as well as ideally. With respect to this, West German educational sociologist Jürgen Zinnecker spoke of a “barracked moratorium”. Children and adolescents were particularly exposed to the political pressure to adapt. Admittedly, the educational aspirations of the SED targeted all citizens, but unlike adults, adolescents had not yet found their position in society and had thus less chances to evade political education. The law on youth, enacted in 1974, stipulated the “socialist personality” as a general educational goal to which parents had to aspire. Yet early age educational opportunities were conditional to the compliance to given norms, and deviant behavior could be punished rigidly and have grave consequences for the future. Although the majority ostensibly seemed to fulfill the claims by the state, and testified their loyalty with the politics of the SED whenever demanded, they regarded her policy at least indifferently. “Contradiction between word and deed” was one of the major obstacles of the ruling dealing with teenagers. But there were adolescents willing to endure restrictions, to realize self-determined actions. Minor deviance from implicit and explicit standards could cause grave consequences for one’s existence. Attempts at flight and applications for exit permit were the utmost form of non-compliance. The number of adolescents among fugitives and petitioners was disproportional. The dissertation focuses on conflicts emerging from the tension between given life designs and autonomous organization of different spheres by adolescents for the years of Erich Honecker’s reign from 1971 to 1989 in the district of Schwerin.

This chapter examines Rosenstrauch’s years as an actor in Mecklenburg-Schwerin between 1800 and 1804. He had left Kassel in 1800 for a new engagement with the ducal court theater in Schwerin. The chapter opens with his trip from Kassel to Schwerin, explaining the challenges of traveling between the fragmented states of the Holy Roman Empire and the historical and socioeconomic peculiarities of the Baltic region of Europe to which Mecklenburg belonged. It then describes the differences between Hesse-Kassel and Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In contrast to Hesse, Mecklenburg was dominated by serf-owning nobles, and enlightened absolutism had made few inroads. As a result, the ducal capital, Schwerin, was too small to support a permanent theater, so Rosenstrauch’s troupe, directed by Karl Ludwig Krickeberg, spent much of the year on tour. These tours influenced its theatrical work and took it to places that illustrated the diversity of premodern Germany, including the seaport of Rostock, the beach resort of Doberan, and the Swedish exclave of Stralsund. In Rostock, Rosenstrauch renewed his participation in Freemasonry, which was to be an important aspect of his life for the next two decades.

The Gallican evangelicals of the 1550s and 1560s, represented here primarily by Jean de Monluc, François Bauduin, and Charles Du Moulin, stayed on the path blazed by early French evangelicals and continued to seek evangelical reform within the existing French church. Monluc, bishop of Valence, adopted Protestant ideas and practices in his diocese. He worked with the lawyer Bauduin and Huguenot nobleman Antoine of Navarre to try to forge a religious compromise at the Colloquy of Poissy. Calvin turned against Bauduin, whom he labeled a moyenneur. Legal expert Charles Du Moulin lived briefly among the Reformed in Switzerland, Germany, and Montbéliard before returning to France, where he outwardly abjured the Protestant faith but increasingly wrote about religious matters from an evangelical perspective. Du Moulin turned bitterly against the Calvinists, however, for he feared they were taking over the evangelical movement in France.

In their efforts to suppress the language and nationality of the Polish people in the eastern binational provinces after 1870, Prussian state officials looked to the Volksschule to serve as an instrument of germanization. The school’s function was not only to teach Polish children to speak German but also to acculturate them into the German nation. Far from spreading the use of the German language and assimilating the youth into German society, this policy bred germanophobia and a repugnance for the school in Polish families. In spite of all the means of coercion at their disposal, the school authorities did not succeed in achieving these objectives. The total bankruptcy of the germanization policy was exposed when the Polish people resorted to political defiance in the school strikes of 1906. While it is true that the increasingly forceful germanization campaign aroused fervent affirmations of Polish national identity and provoked a countermobilization of Polish nationalists, the failure of the government’s school policy began before the development of a Polish nationalist movement in the 1890s and the outbreak of Polish resistance after the turn of the century. It was the outcome of a long succession of injustices and mistakes made by state officials. Their first error was to underestimate the difficulties, if not the impossibility, of teaching Polish children to speak and read German in the most impoverished and destitute school system in the Prussian state. Although Upper Silesia was the home of 1 million Polish-speaking inhabitants, the heartland of Polish culture and the center of the nationality struggle was Posen. Polish society in Posen was predominantly composed of agricultural laborers and peasants, but there existed also an indigenous nobility and middle-class groups that could provide a cadre of political leaders. The Catholic clergy were Polish and active in public life, unlike the priests in the diocese of Breslau who were mostly German and were under orders from Archbishop Kopp to refrain from antigovernment political activity. Clergymen of high rank represented the electoral districts of Posen in the Reichstag and the House of Deputies.

Abstract This chapter provides a detailed case-study of the Hanoverian-led military intervention in the duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin on behalf of the local nobility which was being oppressed by the tyrannical duke in alliance with Russian tsar Peter the Great. This gave the case a greater degree of diplomatic and geopolitical salience than the other cases investigated so far. This was largely due to the broader context of the Great Northern War, the related alliance between the duke of Mecklenburg and Russia, the fact that the elector of Hanover as the chief intervener was simultaneously King George I of Great Britain, and the rivalry of Hanover and Brandenburg-Prussia in northern Germany. The Emperor’s political stance towards developments in the north also affected Vienna’s approach to the crisis and added a further set of relationships which influenced the case. The analysis will try to discern the normative basis of the motivations, aims, perceptions, and reactions of the involved and uninvolved parties in the case.

Flexible endoscopes are thermo-labile and cannot withstand heat sterilization processes. Common disinfection processes like ethylene oxide or hydrogen peroxide vapour as well as formaldehyde are more or less effective, but require long contact and aeration times. Furthermore, these processes use toxic and explosive substances. Therefore, the development of new methods for the sterilization of thermo sensitive devices especially with long fine lumen is very important. A promising possibility is the decontamination by plasma discharge treatment. Various plasma setups have been developed. However, due to the complexity of plasma techniques and technologies, setups and parameters, it is impossible to compare their antimicrobial efficacy by single experiments. A standardization of microbiological parameters is necessary to attribute the observed effects solely to the plasma efficacy. This work is based on round robin tests with and without plasma treatment by three institution (the Fraunhofer IGB Stuttgart, Germany; the HygCen GmbH Schwerin, Germany and the INP Greifswald, Germany) and the publications by Maucher et al. (2011) and Schnabel et al. (2012).

Streszczenie:
With the words quoted in the title of the presentation, Friedrich Rainer, the Carinthian Gauleiter, characterized the conduct of Bishop Gregorij Rožman and his Catholic clergy during the Second World War in the Province of Ljubljana. This paper endeavours to fathom the underlying motivations behind this political alignment, which triggered a violent civil war in occupied Slovenia in 1941 that tragically tore the Slovenian nation apart – a legacy that can still be felt today. To comprehend the mindset of the Slovenian clergy, it is essential to look at the historical role of the Catholic Church in shaping Slovenian national and cultural identity throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th century. In a predominantly agrarian society, the Catholic clergy assumed multifaceted roles, encompassing spiritual, educational, political and economic functions, underpinned by the conviction that they were the sole interpreters of the nation. To be a true Slovenian was equated with being Catholic. With the beginning of the occupation and the partitioning of Slovenia among the aggressors – Germany, Italy and Hungary – in 1941, the emergence of a Liberation Front, led by the Communists was perceived by the Church in the Province of Ljubljana as a direct challenge to the established social order. Deeming this emerging movement as the paramount adversary of both God and the nation, Bishop Rožman opted to fight it, even if it entailed forging an alliance with fascist Italy and later the Third Reich. This paper will delve into the intricacies of this dynamic process, including the role of the Vatican in its evolution.
