Intellectual Property is an ideology of the late Twentieth Century which reserves property-like rights in information, so that creators may extract its economic value. Current American copyright law draws mainly from this concept; it has been constructed through history by negotiation between various established economic interests. Information Freedom is a competing ideology which has been successful in the software community. It emphasizes the dangers of over-propertization and the benefits of freely accessible resources, especially non-depletable information resources. Compromise must be reached in a practical (non-ideological) fashion in order to achieve the social goals of: production of creative content (encouraged by fair but not excessive compensation for creators); promotion of scientific, political, technical, artistic, cultural, and economic progress by removing obstacles to accessing content and taking advantage of innovations which change the status quo; protection of creative freedom; and ensuring quality and diversity in the content which is created. Civil disobedience as a means to achieve these goals may be counterproductive if it results in tighter technological restrictions on content availability or stricter legal mechanisms; legal reforms proposed by Lawrence Lessig and Jessica Litman are unlikely to be enacted. Internet-based technologies have strong potential to increase exposure to diversity, decrease costs, and improve the subjective experience for music consumers. Cheaper film-making equipment may have similar positive effects for motion pictures to a lesser degree. Internet bandwidth and other practical limitations suggest that immediate changes in video distribution and consumption patterns are more likely to be driven by the availability of Digital Video Recorders, or perhaps competing Video On Demand services. Different economic models which fund content creation may be appropriate for different applications, and may in some cases further social goals better than strong propertization. Alternative models include voluntary contributions (either from creators or consumers); indirect benefit by establishing reputation, selling related services, cross-promotion, or selling advertising; and public funding. The history of telecommunication, including the telegraph, radio, television, and the Internet, provides evidence that important uses for new technology may not be initially obvious, that the maturation of digital information technology and related economic models is just beginning.

Streszczenie:
This is a thesis investigating the use of digital technology in creative writing, with a focus on innovative poetry. Three research areas explore this through theory, practice and reflection. These are preceded by an introduction to digital poetry, including an overview of the field. Chapter 1 describes the use of digital technology in appropriative writing, using digital methods to collect and re-organise text from social media to produce two books. Appropriative, allegorical or conceptual writing is discussed in relation to these books and more generally. This discussion includes reflections on the ethics of appropriative methodologies, with reference to writers such as Kenneth Goldsmith and Vanessa Place. Chapter 2 explores the possibilities of digital technology for procedurally transforming existing texts to produce new ones. Two creative projects are discussed, the first using spreadsheets to transform by mechanistic word substitution and the second using databases to transform by reduction and ‘writing through’. These are contextualised and discussed in relation to the work of John Cage, Jackson Mac Low, the Oulipo and others. Chapter 3 investigates permutational and combinatory works and the use of machine methods to introduce programmatic randomness. A range of online works are described premised on aleatory selection from lists. The poetics of chance is discussed in relation to digital and non-digital combinatory works including Raymond Queneau, Alison Knowles and Nick Montfort. The human-machine dynamic is viewed as collaborative rather than competitive, with the machine envisaged as an adjunct to rather than an alternative to human practice. Processual methods are regarded as having most value when combined with non-processual and non-schematic elements. Originality is considered as a valid concept for procedural works, residing at the level of ideas and design. The procedural works discussed in the thesis are contextualised within a broader personal poetics of inclusivity, playfulness and humour.

Many industries are today facing the possibilities and challenges arising with an increasingly digitalised world. One such is the scantily studied industry of earth-moving contractors that today stands in front of an increasing amount of digital technologies, which may have the possibility to assist firms in their earthwork operations. However, there are indications that many firms tend to experience difficulties to beneficially adopt or see the potential of utilising these digital technologies. Hence, many firms tend to undertake an adoption approach that is associated with high client dependency and a less beneficial unsustainable subordinated position within the industry’s value chain. The purpose of this study has thus been to explore how the technological, organisational and external elements affect earth-moving contractors’ opportunity to adopt and utilise digital technologies in their operations. Moreover, the study has aimed to contribute with the understanding and knowledge of how the adoption of digital technology can be used to strengthen Swedish contractors’ position in the earth-moving industry’s value chain and in the end, aid the country’s sociotechnical development. The findings of the study are based on an explorative multiple case study approach and extensive review of literature. The results suggest that the extent to which adoption and utilisation of digital technologies differs among different earth-moving firms. Three of the five studied companies are considered as digital forerunners which have been able to leverage digital technologies to increase efficiency in their operations. In the case of two of these firms, the adoption of digital technology has enabled them to transform their whole businesses and partake in an increased and more beneficial role within the value chain. Further, the analysis of the findings indicates that the difference in adoption is affected by several factors related to a continuous interaction between (1) the internal aspects of the organisations, (2) the external context of the firms and (3) if the technical features of the digital technologies are perceived as compatible and beneficial for, the current business process and strategy. The thesis contributes to academia with explorative findings within a scarcely studied industry in general and, regarding digital technology adoption in particular. Additionally, the study provides examples of the previously unrecognised industry-dynamic phenomena of value chain integration by earth-moving contractors. These findings could have implications for the whole construction sector in Sweden. Lastly, the study exemplifies opportunities and barriers crucial for the adoption and implementation of digital technologies within smaller project-based organisations.

Digital technology in higher education is constantly evolving. Understanding the effects of digital technology is important for higher education institutions in order to make good investments of digital technology. Previous research has focused on learning, teaching or the organization and the relation between one of these aspects and digital technology, thereby missing a broader understanding of how materiality in digital technology affects higher education. In this study themed interviews were conducted at a veterinary education to collect data regarding the use of a multi touch medical display table in the organization. The findings show that materiality of digital technology affects all aspects of higher education if it is facilitated by the organization. The findings also show that the organization is vital to the incorporation of digital technology in teaching as well as learning and that already existing materiality in the HE organization needs to be analyzed to understand the potential effects of new digital technology

Streszczenie:
With the rising emphasis on security and the number of fraud related crimes around the world, authorities are looking for new technologies to tighten security of identity. Among many modern electronic technologies, digital watermarking has unique advantages to enhance the document authenticity. At the current status of the development, digital watermarking technologies are not as matured as other competing technologies to support identity authentication systems. This work presents improvements in performance of two classes of digital watermarking techniques and investigates the issue of watermark synchronisation. Optimal performance can be obtained if the spreading sequences are designed to be orthogonal to the cover vector. In this thesis, two classes of orthogonalisation methods that generate binary sequences quasi-orthogonal to the cover vector are presented. One method, namely "Sorting and Cancelling" generates sequences that have a high level of orthogonality to the cover vector. The Hadamard Matrix based orthogonalisation method, namely "Hadamard Matrix Search" is able to realise overlapped embedding, thus the watermarking capacity and image fidelity can be improved compared to using short watermark sequences. The results are compared with traditional pseudo-randomly generated binary sequences. The advantages of both classes of orthogonalisation inethods are significant. Another watermarking method that is introduced in the thesis is based on writing-on-dirty-paper theory. The method is presented with biorthogonal codes that have the best robustness. The advantage and trade-offs of using biorthogonal codes with this watermark coding methods are analysed comprehensively. The comparisons between orthogonal and non-orthogonal codes that are used in this watermarking method are also made. It is found that fidelity and robustness are contradictory and it is not possible to optimise them simultaneously. Comparisons are also made between all proposed methods. The comparisons are focused on three major performance criteria, fidelity, capacity and robustness. aom two different viewpoints, conclusions are not the same. For fidelity-centric viewpoint, the dirty-paper coding methods using biorthogonal codes has very strong advantage to preserve image fidelity and the advantage of capacity performance is also significant. However, from the power ratio point of view, the orthogonalisation methods demonstrate significant advantage on capacity and robustness. The conclusions are contradictory but together, they summarise the performance generated by different design considerations. The synchronisation of watermark is firstly provided by high contrast frames around the watermarked image. The edge detection filters are used to detect the high contrast borders of the captured image. By scanning the pixels from the border to the centre, the locations of detected edges are stored. The optimal linear regression algorithm is used to estimate the watermarked image frames. Estimation of the regression function provides rotation angle as the slope of the rotated frames. The scaling is corrected by re-sampling the upright image to the original size. A theoretically studied method that is able to synchronise captured image to sub-pixel level accuracy is also presented. By using invariant transforms and the "symmetric phase only matched filter" the captured image can be corrected accurately to original geometric size. The method uses repeating watermarks to form an array in the spatial domain of the watermarked image and the the array that the locations of its elements can reveal information of rotation, translation and scaling with two filtering processes.

I am a visual artist, a printmaker, and I have been using computer imaging processes in my studio work since 1987. This paper is a supporting document for my submission of creative work which involves incorporating digital imaging into traditional fine arts processes such as printmaking, drawing and collage. The the thoretical basis for my studio production is a combination of cultural studies and postcolonialism. The images I produce re visual summations or examinations of the position of the other in terms of mainstream culture. My creative work interrogates three interrelated themes involving technology and cultural transformation. The first theme is an examination of how visual artists regard technology per se, and the incorporation of digital processes in the production of static images by visual artists working in the Eurocentric tradition in the fine arts of painting and printmaking. The second theme examines the position occupied by specific creative individuals in mainstream culture whose practice places them on the margins of that culture. These individuals occupy the position of the outsider or the other in terms of mainstream cultures. The third theme investigates the phenomenon of technofear in contemporary society, which results from the integration of digital processes in the development of globalised mainstream or imperial metanarratives and their relationship to peripheral individuals and cultures.

The purpose and aim of this study is to examine how the Swedish school works towards digitalization and digital transformation of their educational system. To be able to answer the purpose of this study, the research questions have been deconstructed in three parts: How does the Swedish school work with digitalization and digital transformation from a change perspective? How can this be understood based on the concept digital maturity? Which factors are important based on digital maturity for the Swedish school? The design of this study is based on a case study. The methodology for this study has been a document study, where public documents have been the main source for information. To be able to allocate the documents needed for the study, a search strategy has been formulated as well as criterias for selection to find relevant information. The result of the study shows that investments in digital technology have been conducted in different forms. Some examples of this is one computer to every student and teacher, digital whiteboards and digital learning platforms. The digital maturity in the Swedish school, during these organization changes, has had a middle high level of digital maturity and it is necessary to improve this to be able to tackle upcoming changes and obstacles. Important factors the study could identify was: that it is essential that there is a vision in place for what the digitalization of the Swedish school aim to achieve. Based on the vision, there needs to be strategies on how to achieve it. There is also a necessity for support systems to be in place and finally there has to be competence development as well as opportunities for the staff to get training for their digital competence before, during and after the changing process.

Streszczenie:

The student affairs profession is at a crossroads (Torres & Walbert, 2010) given digital technology’s growth and the academy’s administrative expansion (Bowen, 2013). Student affairs administrators must simultaneously respond to digital technology’s implications in students’ lives (Kirschner & Karpinski, 2010) and to new state and federal compliance mandates connected to their expanding campus roles (Dungy & Gordon, 2010). Student affairs leaders acknowledge that these competing priorities demand more nimble responses (Manning, Kinzie, & Schuh, 2013; McClennan & Stringer, 2009). Significant research (Barr, McClennan, & Sandeen, 2014; Elkins, 2015; Dungy & Gordon, 2010; Junco, 2014; Kuk, 2012; Torres & Walbert, 2010) highlights that student affairs administrator‘s digital technology use can augment traditional in-person co-curricular student experiences; yet, minimal research exists on how student affairs administrators utilize digital technology.

This qualitative, historical, interpretive study analyzed student affairs administrators’ digital technology use from 2005 to 2015. Three research questions and three sub-questions framed the research design, which utilized three data sources. The researcher conducted (N=16) interviews with student affairs professionals and educators. Elite interviews (N=5) were conducted with some of the earlier student affairs digital technology adopters, while (N=11) key informant interviews were conducted with administrators who started their professional careers in 2005. (N=206) documents, including conference presentations and publications, were collected through the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) and College Student Educators International (ACPA)’s websites. Data were analyzed in-case and across cases to highlight overall themes and a progressive timeline of how student affairs professionals used digital technology throughout their work. Using the futurology lens, the researcher envisioned how student affairs should use technology over the next ten years.

Analysis revealed that since 2005, student affairs administrators utilized digital technology to build capacity in their campus work, augment existing engagement efforts with students, faculty, and staff, and inspire change within and outside of their institution. Additionally, a historic timeline described how NASPA and ACPA provided limited, yet progressive, digital technology professional development education.

Student affairs administrators, professional organizations, and academy leaders leading digital technology implementation efforts might utilize the researcher’s recommendations as a starting point to catalyze the academy’s ongoing evolution.

Streszczenie:
Digital preservation may be defined as the cumulative actions undertaken by an organisation or individual to ensure that digital content is usable across generations of information technology. As technological change occurs, the digital preservation community must detect relevant technology developments, determine their implications for preserving digital content, and develop timely and appropriate responses to take full advantage of progress and minimize obsolescence. This thesis discusses the results of an investigation of technology responsiveness for digital preservation. The research produced a technology response model that defines the roles, functions, and content component for technology responsiveness. The model built on the results of an exploration of the nature and meaning of technological change and an evaluation of existing technology responses that might be adapted for digital preservation. The development of the model followed the six-step process defined by constructive research methodology, an approach that is most commonly used in information technology research and that is extensible to digital preservation research. This thesis defines the term technology responsiveness as the ability to develop continually effective responses to ongoing technological change through iterative monitoring, assessment, and response using the technology response model for digital preservation.

This thesis explores aesthetization in general and fashion in particular in digital technology design and how we can design digital technology to account for the extended influences of fashion. The thesis applies a combination of methods to explore the new design space at the intersection of fashion and technology. First, it contributes to theoretical understandings of aesthetization and fashion institutionalization that influence digital technology design. We show that there is an unstable aesthetization in mobile design and the increased aesthetization is closely related to the fashion industry. Fashion emerged through shared institutional activities, which are usually in the form of action nets in the design of digital devices. “Tech Fashion” is proposed to interpret such dynamic action nets of institutional arrangements that make digital technology fashionable and desirable. Second, through associative design research, we have designed and developed two prototypes that account for institutionalized fashion values, such as the concept “outfit-centric accessory.” We call for a more extensive collaboration between fashion design and interaction design.

Off-highway vehicles are on the verge of switching from analog to digital video camera technology (VCT), which offers better video quality and new features but adds complexity to the system. This thesis project aims to implement the digital VCT to the display computer CCpilot VA intended for off-highway vehicles. In this project the differences between analog and digital VCTs were reviewed and then a demo displaying a live digital camera video feed on the embedded Linux based display computer CCpilot VA was implemented with Qt and QML. More specifically, different GStreamer pipelines were tested, as Qt uses GStreamer to play video, and camera settings were changed using the ISO 17215 standard.  The demo displayed a live digital camera video feed with high quality, low latency and high frame rate on the VA by using a GStreamer pipeline utilizing hardware decoding. The results have shown that digital video cameras perform better than analog cameras, primarily because digital cameras have better video quality. The attempts to simultaneously display a video feed and a Graphical User Interface created by Qt have been made. However, they were only successful with poor video performance. A zero-copy link between the GStreamer pipeline’s decoder and sink element must be used to obtain good video performance.

Streszczenie:
Today's K-12 classrooms are increasingly comprised of students who accomplish much of their informal learning through digital media and technology. In response, a growing number of educators are considering how they might draw upon these informal learning experiences to support student engagement and learning in the classroom through technology. The purpose of this study is for social studies educators, school administrators, teacher educators and curriculum developers to understand more about the potentials and limitations of integrating technology such as a digital text. This research focuses on the differences in experiences using a digital text and a printed text from the perspective of four high school social studies classes. The curriculum for the printed and digital texts was developed in collaboration with the Choices Program for the Twenty-First Century at Brown University. This research was based on the assumption that the thoughtful integration of a digital text in the classroom can support student engagement and differentiation while facilitating learning that students can readily transfer to multiple political, economic and social contexts beyond the classroom. Critically, students of poverty and students of color have the most to gain from increased access to digital technology in the public education system. People of color and people of poverty in the United States have significantly less access to technology at home than their white and middle class counterparts. Therefore, the classroom presents an opportunity for students who lack access to digital learning opportunities in their home environments to develop the technological fluency and digital literacy that are increasingly necessary to engage in multiple political and economic spheres in the United States. The current literature on digital technology in education lacks sufficient empirical evidence of the potential benefits and challenges that digital technologies may offer secondary social studies education from the perspective of the classroom. Therefore, the classroom field test that was undertaken for this research offers a more empirical understanding of digital texts from the important perspectives of students and teachers in the classroom learning community. This research was conducted in a large, suburban high school in the Portland Metropolitan area and compared the experiences of tenth-grade World History classes working with a print text to the experiences of tenth-grade World History classes working digitally. The mixed-methods multiple-case study design addresses the following research questions: a) In what ways, if at all, does a digital text provide high school social studies' students different affordances and academic skills than a printed text? and b) How, if at all, do high school social studies students interact differently with a digital text from a printed text? The analysis of data offered evidence that the use of the digital text supported technological fluency, the creation of more sophisticated learning products, differentiation for multiple learning styles and a more supportive reading experience due to its multimodal features. These unique academic affordances were not equivalently supported by the use of the print text. However, the type of text did not demonstrably influence students' ability to communicate their thinking in analytical writing. The analysis of data also suggested that students were somewhat more cognitively and behaviorally engaged in the digital case studies. Importantly, the digital text did not create a negatively discrepant learning experience for students of color but, rather, supported increased student engagement for both white students and students of color. The data also suggested that the digital text posed significant challenges for both students and teachers. The digital experience required students to learn new and challenging technology skills. The digital text also required more class time and created more classroom management challenges for teachers than the print experience. Despite these additional challenges, both students and teachers expressed a preference for the digital experience. Thus, the digital text seemed to provide both a more challenging and a more rewarding experience for students. This study has implications for educators that are interested in thoughtfully integrating a digital text or, a similar digital technology, in comparable classroom contexts.

Streszczenie:
The rapid growth of technology development increases the need for incumbent organizations to digitally transform. Studies show that digitally mature organization have a 26% higher profitability than peers (Westerman et al., 2012), nonetheless, success is rarely obtained as it requires incumbents to radically change their working methods and participate in a very painful transition. To gain knowledge on how to increase the success rate of digital transformations, this thesis examines what critical factors that affect the willingness for change of first line managers. Furthermore, it shows how change management can be applied to improve this willingness. Using a qualitative and exploratory approach through a case study, this research shows that earlier experience of work-related change, perceived usefulness and digital maturity affect the first line managerial willingness to change. Except from applying general theories on change management as well as considering more specific research on technology implementations, this study suggest organizations should focus on leading digital change from transforming individuals based on the three critical factors found to affect managerial change willingness. In doing so, stakeholder management analysis is suggested being a helpful tool as well as moving focus from the technology to a new way of working.

Digital literacy is fast becoming a necessary skill for mediating life in the 21st century. Digital technologies, digital media, and digital devices have become ubiquitous and intrinsic in modern society and using one to interact with the others requires specific skills—digital literacies—be learned. The purpose of this research was to understand the extent to which Baby Boomers are digitally literate, the digital devices they understand and use, and the purposes for which they are using them.

Residents living in a specific group of age-restricted communities comprised of people 55 years of age and older were e-mailed requests to participate in an online survey. More than 8,200 homes received the invitations and 659 people agreed to participate. The survey consisted of 17 three-part, forced-choice questions and five demographic identifiers. To analyze the data, the researcher used SPSS and ran chi-square tests on each response comparing Older Boomers to Younger Boomers regarding specific digital activities in which they engaged, the device(s) they used, and the frequencies with which they engaged in those activities.

The results of this study indicate that the Baby Boomers in the study possess basic functional digital literacies. They use the Internet daily to read news, check weather, and look up recipes, directions, and medical information. While participation in the various activities was fairly even between both Boomer groups, Younger Boomers tend to send and receive text messages, bank online, pay bills online, search for recipes, save online bookmarks, visit social networks, read blogs, and take online classes more than Older Boomers. The majority of respondents were women, college educated, with annual household incomes of $75,000.00 or more. The most popular digital devices used were laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones, respectively and respondents averaged using three different digital devices while engaging in their digital activities. The trend is toward decreasing use of desktop and laptop computers and a corresponding increase in the use of tablets and smartphones.

Streszczenie:
Digital signage is an emerging new communication technology. It is expected to play an important role in today’s dynamic world as digital signage displays timely information, while reducing the environmental costs associated with traditional printed signage. The main focus of this thesis is the design, implementation, and evaluation of a digital signage system based on a PC to display web contents (or other dynamic information) on digital displays located at one or more locations. The system will display information based upon a “playlist” that can be dynamically updated. It avoids the single point of failure of a television (be it analog or IPTV) based system, since each display has an attached processor and local storage containing both the information to be displayed and the local playlist of what is to be displayed. Additionally, the design allows content to be customized to specific local viewers, i.e., the information displayed can be adapted to the user or users currently in front of the display. The granularity of the schedule (i.e., playlist) is much shorter than in existing digital signage systems – leading to a more visually dynamic experience for viewers. On the basis of our evaluation, we strongly believe that this approach to digital signage will displace existing signage systems.

Developments and advances in information and communications technology are boosting a convergence of computing, media, and telecommunications. This is dramatically affecting every aspect of society from technology designers and content creators to users. The design-to-product cycle time continues to decrease as new markets open up, and windows of opportunity exist for those who can move fast and make the right connections. Challenges and opportunities exist in each area of the convergence, but one thing is here to stay: being digital.

Streszczenie:
Analog television systems are rapidly being replaced by digital television systems accross the world. Turkey is not an exception to this development since the government has recently decided to shut-down analog television transmission across the country by 2016. In this context, subject matter of this study is the adoption of digital television in Turkey. And the study&rsquo
s main aim is to understand and explain the economical and political rationale behind the conversion to digital television. In the switch process to digital television, digital television has been presented as a new &ldquo
revolutionary&rdquo
technology which is primarily to enhance the television &ldquo
service&rdquo
for viewers by the champions of the process and the governments. However, this study takes a critical position against this argument and argues that the adoption of digital television is primarily shaped by the commercial stakes of private broadcasting organisations and administrative concerns of governments. In this respect, this thesis argues that even though the digital television has technical superiorities to analog television systems which facilitates the introduction more television channels with higher audio-visual quality, the adoption of digital television does not include any project to improve the quality of television content, the equal access to information in the society and thus citizenship in a democratic society. Quite the contrary, since digital television facilitates and improves pay television implementations, digital television seems to deteriorate the imbalance in the society in accessing the information. It is therefore necessary to put &ldquo
reserve&rdquo
on the expectations from digital television. To articulate this thesis, different national contexts including USA and Britain as leading countries and Turkey in digital television conversion process are dealt with in the study. Firstly, the American and Britain experience of digital television which does not exclude the European context are examined in terms of common developments as well as the pecularities of the countries concerning to switch to digital television. Lastly, in the framework given above, the developments as to the digital television in Turkey are examined in detail. As well as the assessments about recent developments as to the issue, interviews carried out with the representatives of the broadcasting industry and regulatory authorities are also included in the analysis. Hence, this study should be considered as a descriptive research which aims to contribute the academic efforts to develop a conceptual framework to the digital television debate in Turkey.

The digital revolution is challenging both individuals and organizations to be more comfortable using various digital technologies. Digital technologies enable and generate high amounts of data, but people are not very good at interpreting or making sense of it. This study aimed to explore the role of digital competencies and data literacy in digital transformations and identify the consequences the lack of digital competencies and data literacy can cause within digital transformation projects. The authors studied technology consultants' perspectives with experience in digital transformation projects using an exploratory qualitative research design building on the empirical data gathered from semi-structured interviews. The authors were able to identify that the technology consultants perceived digital competencies as crucial skills for individuals to possess in digital transformations. At the same time, data literacy was not considered a crucial skill in the context of digital transformations. Regarding the consequences of a digital skills gap, the technology consultants saw issues within the implementation of the project, delays, or indirect waste of resources like monetary assets.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation presents a study of signal deskewing systems in standard CMOS technologies. The objective of this work is to understand the limitations of deskewing systems as they are applied to modern systems and present new architectures to overcome past limitations. Traditional methods for signal deskewing are explored and the general limitations of these methods are identified. Several new architectures are proposed to address the limitations of previous techniques. The systems will be investigated with regard to minimum resolution, programming time, delay, maximum data rate, full scale range, and duty cycle distortion. Several other effects that are critical to the operation of deskewing systems will also be investigated. These effects include overshoot caused by parasitic package inductance, the impact of capacitive terminations, and the effect of mutual inductance between traces. To fulfill the requirements of this study, two deskewing systems are implemented in a 0.25um process. An open-loop system for deskewing wide data busses and a closed-loop system for deskewing a differential pair of lines are both fabricated. Both systems are found to meet the expected performance metrics, providing validation of the proposed techniques. Use of the proposed architectures allows the limitations of previous methods to be overcome. The remaining work is validated through either analytical techniques, simulations, or both where appropriate.

Streszczenie:
The Internet and digital technologies have created an opportunity for documentaries to find new audiences; however, documentary's capacity to overcome the challenges that the online market presents and achieve sustainability is not yet understood. This study brings together research in the areas of new media and documentary in order to comprehend and assess the significance of the growing overlap between the two. Focusing on documentary distribution post-2000, in the United States and the United Kingdom, the thesis examines how the online market has influenced both the culture of documentary and the economic structure of the methods used to distribute documentary films. This involves an exploration of the rise of digital media in relation to its impact upon the film industry and a historical review of the changes that have occurred within the documentary marketplace. The core analysis takes the form of a case study approach that sets out to identify trends in documentary distribution and generate insights into the new models that both documentary platforms and filmmakers have employed. What this research suggests is that documentary distribution via the Web requires a new framework for thinking about how films reach audiences and generate revenues. In particular, it indicates how audience engagement from the onset of production can help documentaries overcome challenges in the online market. In line with participatory media trends, the research confirms that distribution has become more than just a mechanism for content dissemination and that, in the digital age, distribution has developed as a social phenomenon, which expands through ongoing public . involvement and innovation. However, the research also indicates that alternative distribution strategies that rely upon leveraging communities must be uniquely adapted to each project and its particular core audiences. This means that there is no singular, overarching theory or replicable model that characterises the online distribution process for documentary films. Thus, the thesis adds to our knowledge of the diverse ways in which documentary has inhabited the social space offered by new media while ancho~ing existing theories of 'social media' within specific contexts. 3

Streszczenie:
Digital technology is challenging traditional copyright principles. Despite suggestions from a number of commentators that copyright cannot survive the challenge, this thesis aims to demonstrate that copyright can evolve and adapt rather than face elimination. This hypothesis is tested and illustrated by means of an examination of law in conjunction with technology, and by means of concrete examples. Analysis of the author's position in the face of digital technology requires firstly, an investigation of the way in which the existence and exercise of the author's copyright itself is affected by such technology, and secondly, an examination of how the author's standing in relation to dissemination of works generally is concerned (e.g. as regards freedom of speech). It is with the first of these aspects that this thesis is mainly concerned, although, for the sake of a more comprehensive view, some considerations on the second aspect are also advanced. This thesis examines challenges raised in the copyright field by digital technology and the consequential problems in relation to classification of subject matter, identification of authors, fixation and reproduction, the criterion of originality, the meaning of publication, recognition of moral rights, recognition of economic rights, exceptions and limitations, liability of service providers, authenticity of works, infringement, feasibility of enforcement and conflict of laws. Broader issues relating to Government and private control of access to the new media are also analysed. The analysis is focused on copyright subsistence as well as infringement. Furthermore, both the legal and the technological aspects are considered (with the aid of a comprehensive glossary of technological terms). The approach is one of law and technology in equal measure. In the context of these problems there follows a critical examination and comparison of the main national systems, the main international instruments, and the main regional instruments. This systematic survey seeks to encapsulate the work of learned authors in a concise manner, leading to certain proposals. The approach is one of criticism and selection of feasible and practical solutions. Nearly all elements of the proposed solutions exist already, albeit in a fragmented way. These solutions are based on law and on technology, and are formulated to apply in both the analogue and digital worlds. The thesis concludes that for an effective solution of the problems raised by digital technology, an international standard for copyright protection must be adopted, one apposite for the digital world. The thesis puts forward detailed suggestions towards the adoption of an International Digital Copyright Protection System, in the form of definitional, obligational, conflict of laws and technological proposals, whose common denominator is the will to find new answers for the digital challenges. The definitional proposals will clarify conceptual questions arising from the digital revolution. The obligational proposals will regulate the issue of exemptions from liability and duties of Internet service providers. The conflict of laws proposals will address the problems arising in connection with jurisdiction and applicable law on the Internet. The technological proposals will give practical effect to the system by focusing on deterrence and tracing of copyright infringement.

The optimization of a digital system in deep submicron technology should be done with two basic principles: energy waste reduction and energy-delay tradeoff. Increased energy resources obtained through energy waste reduction are utilized through energy-delay tradeoffs. The previous practice of obliviously pursuing performance has led to the rapid increase in energy consumption. While energy waste due to unnecessary switching could be reduced with small increases in logic complexity, leakage energy waste still remains as a major design challenge. We find that fine-grain dynamic leakage reduction (FG-DLR), turning off small subblocks for short idle intervals, is the key for successful leakage energy saving. We introduce an FG-DLR circuit technique, Leakage Biasing, which uses leakage currents themselves to bias the circuit into the minimum leakage state, and apply it to primary SRAM arrays for bitline leakage reduction (Leakage-Biased Bitlines) and to domino logic (Leakage-Biased Domino). We also introduce another FG-DLR circuit technique, Dynamic Resizing, which dynamically downsizes transistors on idle paths while maintaining the performance along active critical paths, and apply it to static CMOS circuits.
(cont.) We show that significant energy reduction can be achieved at the same computation throughput and communication bandwidth by pipelining logic gates and wires. We find that energy saved by pipelining datapaths is eventually limited by latch energy overhead, leading to a power-optimal pipelining. Structuring global wires into on-chip networks provides a better environment for pipelining and leakage energy saving. We show that the energy-efficiency increase through replacement with dynamically packet-routed networks is bounded by router energy overhead. Finally, we provide a way of relaxing the peak power constraint. We evaluate the use of Activity Migration (AM) for hot spot removal. AM spreads heat by transporting computation to a different location on the die. We show that AM can be used either to increase the power that can be dissipated by a given package, or to lower the operating temperature and hence the operating energy.

Companies heavily and successfully invested in traditional technologies (defenders) often find it difficult to make the transitions to new disruptive technologies, in spite of technological competence and clear opportunity to do so. The core competencies that enabled the firm to excel under the old paradigms become core rigidities when faced with the need to address technological discontinuities. Products like digital still cameras, DSCs, represent the convergence of multiple rapidly changing technologies in electronics, optics, computers, networks, and software. The emergence and adoption of digital still photography both accompanies and defines a new paradigm in the sharing of images as it attempts to both emulate and replace the previous modalities while creating new market-expanding opportunities. The emergence of digital still photography has been predicted and promised for several decades. Indeed, it has already managed to replace silver halide altogether in certain market segments previously relied upon by conventional photography firms, and is at present extending beyond the early adopter stage in the broader consumer market. It is a current example of innovation and technological discontinuity, and one that has enough history to permit analysis. It poses a real potential disruptive threat to the incumbent players, some of which have succumbed while others apparently succeeded. This thesis studies the relationships between the development of the composite technologies in digital photography, the environment in which they operate, the emergence of dominant designs, market diffusion, and the strategies for success employed by leading participants. In the process of studying patterns of entry and exit firms and a detailed look at their products, evidence of a dominant design and support in this industry for the Abernathy and Utterback model of industrial innovation is uncovered. Also revealed is a second wave of innovation in the DSC industry that is firmly established and suggests the onset of a Christiansen-style disruptive dynamic. By studying this specific technological discontinuity in the context of the broader patterns, lessons in adapting to technological change in general are learned.

The purpose of this study was to find out the progress in the research of technology ecosystems and digital business ecosystems and to combine that information for business purposes by the utilization of information about business ecosystems. The need for this information emerged at the Department of Information Processing Science in the context of European Union research projects. The information gained is expected to assist to increase possibilities both for the research and for the personal competence to work with enterprises in new kinds of technology environments. The main research question to be answered in this study was: How are technology ecosystems and digital business ecosystems for business perceived and approached in the literature? Instead of a systematic review, a method of systematic mapping was selected to structure the selected research areas for getting a broad overview over the two streams of research, and for identification the possible research evidence. To answer the main question the following subquestions were set for both systematic mapping studies: RQ1 Which journals include papers on technology ecosystems / digital business ecosystems for business? RQ2 What are the most investigated topics of technology ecosystems / digital business ecosystems and how have these changed over time? RQ3 What are the most frequently applied research approaches and methods, and in what study context? Based on structuring the selected research areas according to the set subquestions, broad overviews were established presenting findings. Based on the identification and evaluation of publication channels the forums for discussion were exposed. Based on the identification of topics and their evolution the trends of discussion were exposed. Based on the identification of research types the non-empirical and the empirical research were exposed. Found research evidence and found solution proposals (from non-empirical research) were discussed and the need for further research was considered. The main contribution of this mapping study was the identification of different perceptions of two vague concepts, technology ecosystem and digital business ecosystem, and notion of their convergence and interlace over time (especially in relation to the exposed scarce research evidence). The recommendations for future research were set based on the found empirical research and solution proposals, as well as limitations of this study.

Streszczenie:
This study critically investigates the concept of “digital Bangladesh” putting it in the wider debates surrounding ICT for Development (ICT4D). The original contribution of this thesis is that it problematizes empowerment in ICT4D approach within the human development paradigm in the context of Bangladesh. The main argument of the thesis is that digital Bangladesh as the local manifestation of ICT for Development is both outcome and facilitator of neoliberal globalization. Another argument is that digital Bangladesh promotes entrepreneurship-oriented personal empowerment which is consistent with the neoliberal ideologies. The thesis involves two types of empirical study: discursive and ethnographic. To be precise, it conducts a critical analysis of the National ICT Policy 2009 with the aim of investigating how digital Bangladesh is discursively constructed by it. The findings of the analysis show that the Policy constructs a positive discourse of digital Bangladesh. Most importantly, parroting ICT4D, the Policy propagates the idea that ICT can bring about progress in all areas of the lives of the citizenry, particularly social equity, education, healthcare and economic growth. The entire National ICT Policy is permeated by technological determinism. On the micro level, ethnographically designed fieldwork was conducted at three telecentres located at three districts. Findings show that the telecentres served predominantly the privileged sections of rural societies (i.e. literate, young men and women), by providing either services based on computer, the Internet and the Web, or computer-education. Peasants and other marginalized populations that form the majority of rural populations were invisible at the centres. Analysed from an empowerment approach based on social power, the findings suggest that the telecentres could hardly bring about empowerment and human development in the lives of the people involved with them in different ways. They at best contributed to the entrepreneurs’ achievement of self-reliance, which is consistent with neoliberalism.

This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of physical movement challenges for training performers in open-ended, practice based learning settings. Moreover, it discusses how multi-modal analytics systems can provide support for performers. This study identifies ten important requirements that a prototype should have in order to fulfill the performer’s needs. These requirements are implemented in a low fidelity prototype that provides modeling movement followed by Laban Movement Analysis theory, capture user data with MMLA tools, and provide personalized feedback. The results indicated there is a potential within the usage of a multi-modal system to support and improve the motor skill learning process through personalized help and feedback.

This project is initiated based on observations from me and other people in the design/technology community. Products and services are optimised for efficiency and standardisation caring more for profit than privacy. We, humans, are becoming the product to be consumed by our technologies. However I believe that good interaction design can also be the remedy to this issue created by it. Celebrating fluidity, creating interactions that trigger reflection and empower users. Designing things away and creating hacks.  This initiated the research question of this thesis: How do we design interactions that empower people in their engagements with the digital so a balanced relation can be formed? This thesis is approaching this issue through a process I call co-reflection through disruptive design. This is a hands on design methode that use experiments as contextualisations of the reflections done by the designer. The experiments are shared with people in order to reflect upon as well. The returning reflections are used to continue the project and often lead to a reframing of it. The big fluctuating issue being targeted in this project called for a process inline with this nature. Throughout this process three design principles and three design handles are initiated.  This project is finalised with a last experiment Huddle. This is a nomad server where the digital design manifesto is kept and collectively written. The proposed design principles and handles are a small stab at the bigger issue. Looking at the fluidity of the process and the community involvement I chose to not deliver a final solution but another experiment that is in flux. Social distancing has become a new social norm, and with it, digital technology takes a more prominent role in socialization as people try to stay home. People are connecting and interacting with each other using different digital technologies and social media platforms. This study investigates how digital technologies help to maintain long-distance childhood friendships. Specific research questions included determining the most popular forms of digital technology used to maintain long-distance childhood friendships of the male population of Southeast Asia, and how significant are these digitally-based long-distance childhood friendships in people who keep in touch with childhood friends, and do people use any other forms of contact to keep in touch with childhood friends other than digital? An online survey was used, with some open-ended follow-up questions sent by e-mail. Moreover, friends are living in different time zones. The Survey found that all friends using digital technology with an Internet connection. The results indicated that people are busy with family and work, and it can be hard to find the time to keep in touch with childhood friends. However, even people are busy and in different time zones, they still maintain friendships using different forms of digital communication. On the other hand, it is very hard to use other forms of contact to keep in touch with childhood friends other than digital. The study findings may contribute to better design of social media and other platforms which are used to support long-distance relationships of adults with their friends from childhood.

Streszczenie:
Blockchain technology has recently gained increased attention. Experts praise it as the “new Internet” for goods. The potential of blockchain technology today is undeniable. Yet, initiatives in other areas, outside the financial sector, are slow to evolve. Academic research shows a lack of studies on how blockchain, as a new disruptive innovation could affect the healthcare system. This paper sets out with the ambition to explore how blockchain technology can affect Sweden’s digital healthcare. More specifically, the study is based on a theoretical analysis. By firstly presenting a literature review on the topic, the theoretical framework based on trust theories, digitalization of the healthcare industry, globalization, data ownership and blockchain technology is developed through an analysis of established theoretical developments. The study proceeds from a constructivist perspective, acknowledging that the healthcare industry, with trends such as globalization and data ownership, could potentially be affected from a disruptive new technology such as blockchain. The findings suggest that blockchain technology could find a promising implementation in the healthcare industry, by creating trust for patient data ownership. However, the technology is still shows limitations and vulnerabilities, and thus cannot be applied immediately.

Telemetry & Instrumentation, in conjunction with NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, has developed a commercial, intelligent, data acquisition module that performs all functions associated with acquiring and digitizing a transducer measurement. These functions include transducer excitation, signal gain and anti-aliasing filtering, A/D conversion, linearization and digital filtering, and sample rate decimation. The functions are programmable and are set up from information stored in a local Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS). In addition, the module performs continuous self-calibration and self-test to maintain 0.01% accuracy over its entire operating temperature range for periods of one year without manual recalibration. The module operates in conjunction with a VME-based data acquisition system.

This paper presents research findings related to the human habits of using digital devices. Through theoretical research and empirical fieldwork, it’s clarified that there is a significant concern regarding how we use digital devices and there is health implication that follow. From this baseline this paper presents an application solution designed from the methods of gamification and persuasive computing, concepts where user motivation is a core for success. Therefore, we present a solution based on a social community because from the research and empirical work a community should be a good platform and the social interactions can provide a large amount of the motivation that has been deemed so relevant.

This thesis investigates the relationship between people and networked technology in order to understand the nature of this relationship and why it affects individuals differently. The research found that digital engagement is best understood as a Second Order Cybernetic system, and that engagement is directly influenced by the individuals’ level of system-‐awareness, which enables them to govern/manage their unique set of cybernetic feedback processes, both internal and external, in conjunction with their personal motivation.

It is predicted that there will be more people over the age of 65 than under 5 by 2050 in developed countries. In recognition of the needs of an ageing population, there is a growing field of research in HCI focused on engaging older people with digital technologies. This thesis contributes to the field of ageing in HCI through a community-based participatory design investigation into the challenges and opportunities for older people to engage with digital tools in their everyday lives. We demonstrate how the commitments, practices and values of participatory design can be used to better understand and foster engagement between digital tools and older people through the support of community-based organisations. This is achieved through two case studies. The rst study with a traditional computer class at a local day centre. The second with a London-based intergenerational running club. The research reflects on and examines the details and decisions of the learning and adoption process across these two studies. We expand our view beyond the digital tools to the influences and situations that contribute to older people's attitudes and usage. Through the lens of participatory design and communities of practice we discuss the considerations of values, problem-solving, and identity that can potentially be transferred to other non-traditional digital learning environments for older people. We provide recommendations and reflect on our challenges to serve as guidance for other researchers engaging in similar participatory work `in-the-wild'.

Streszczenie:
The development of digital social media has altered the fabric of youth culture in terms of a young person's access to information and ability to communicate with a global audience. The conditions, opportunities, and limitations of using digital media are different for marginalized urban youth. In order to harness the educational value of digital media in the lives of disenfranchised youth, we must understand its potential as a means of empowerment. This thesis draws together work in digital social media, youth culture, critical media education, and social justice to put forward a new pedagogical model (Digital Youth Praxis) that enables young people to engage in digital practices in order to address social problems that directly affect their lives. Digital Youth Praxis is a six-phase model, which is used to understand how the current digital practices of young people can be effectively managed within a participant-generated social justice pedagogy. Through participatory action research, this thesis explores how young people between the ages of 14–27 learn and live in an era of media convergence. The research project gathered university, school, and community members to create a collaborative and safe space, which enabled the participants to learn how to engage by means of digital media. The results have shown that the conditions of dialogue and collaborative learning enabled the participants to create digital media productions informed by social justice principles. These productions became a means of empowerment and collaborative learning. The Digital Youth Praxis approach represents a significant innovation in youth digital engagements in that it enables youth participants to draw from their own experience in order to create social change.

Many universities, libraries, government organisations and companies are implementing digital repositories to collect, preserve, administer and distribute their collections via the World Wide Web. In the process of building these digital archives and collections, images such as maps are often are captured in an uncompressed, high-resolution format to preserve as much detail as possible. This process, of high-resolution archiving gives rise to the problem of providing the end-user with access to these large (high-resolution) images, such as maps. This dissertation investigates methods of storing and delivering large images over the Internet while limiting the amount of data being transferred; and also documents efforts to incorporate large image support within the DSpace platform.

More and more community services are being digitized and people must adapt to society's digital development. This is a case study in purpose to investigate how Skånetrafiken works to counter digital exclusion, while at the same time trying to increase understanding of the concept digital exclusion. The theory used in this study was derived from literature on digital exclusion. It is based on Jan Van Dijk's research on digital exclusion, where the theory aims to explain the different levels of digital exclusion. The case is based on a qualitative interview study where five interviews have been conducted with employees from Skånetrafiken. Based on this, several factors have been identified in Skånetrafiken's working methods that promote digital inclusion. Furthermore, a theoretical contribution has been developed for how organizations should work to counter digital exclusion. The theoretical contribution is a result derived from the conceptual framework and the study of Skånetrafiken.

Streszczenie:

Computer system end-users, whether at home or work, have been described as the weakest link in a computer security network. End-users frequently encounter warnings intended to prevent them from engaging in potentially dangerous activities and navigating to potentially malicious sites. However, end-users exhibit behaviors that violate safe computing and Internet use. End-users are either digital natives (born in or after 1982) or digital immigrants (born before 1982). This regression research study addresses the extent to which social behavior (measured by response efficacy, self-efficacy, and social influences) impacts the home computer user’s security behavior, controlling for digital natives. A survey was conducted from a random sample of individuals 21 years of age or older who own a personal computer and are responsible for its maintenance and repairs. The survey intended to determine to what extent do response efficacy, self-efficacy, and social influence impact security behavior of the home computer user, controlling for whether the user is a digital native or digital immigrant. The data was analyzed by using hierarchical linear regression. It was determined that when controlling for the effect of being a digital native, response efficacy and social influence were significantly predictive of behavioral intentions, while self-efficacy was not significantly predictive of behavioral intentions. This study shows that home computer users believe that (a) the security process is essential (response efficacy) and (b) they do not want to be seen in a negative light by their peers (social influence) but (c) that they may not actually change their personal behavior (self-efficacy) when making decisions vis-à-vis the security of their personal computers (security behavioral intentions). It was found that use of persuasive communications can affect the user’s security behavioral intention. Despite the implementation of fear appeals, some users have not changed their decision-making process to ensure the security of their systems.
