Pełny tekst źródłaIn Australian Aboriginal affairs, the acculturative strand of assimilation developed in large part from Elkin’s religious and Idealist commitment, for which in the years 1928 to 1933 he won social-scientific authority. In competition with both an eliminationist politics of race and a segregationist politics of territory, Elkin drew upon religious experience, apologetics, sociology, and networks to establish a ‘positive policy’ as an enduring ideal in Aboriginal affairs. His leadership of the 1930s reform movement began within the Anglican Church, became national through civic-religious organs of publicity, and gained scientific authority as Elkin made religious themes a central concern in Australian anthropology. But from the 1960s until recently, most scholars have lost sight of the centrality of Idealism and religion in our protagonist’s seminal project of acculturative assimilation. This thesis aims to show how Elkin dealt with problems fundamental to twentieth century Aboriginal affairs and indeed to Australian modernity more generally – problems of faith and science, morality and expediency – in developing his positive policy towards Aborigines.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this thesis we will study self interacting diffusions with a potential V and the penalised (by a function f) occupation measure : \mu_t=\frac{\int_0^t f(s) \delta_{X_ s} ds}{\int_0^t f(s)}. In a first time, in a compact case, with asymptotic pseudo trajectories and a dynamical system on the occupation measure, we give a convergence result (with the notion of attracteur free set) when f verifies such conditions. Then we consider the same processus model living on R with an onemore interaction function g which is solution of the stochastic differential equation dX_t=dB_t - g(t)\nabla V(X_t-\mu_t) dt. In the case where V is an quadratic potential we give such hypothesis on g and f for the convergence of X_t. Then for a linear potential, we prove that the processus is a. S. Bounded. Finally, in the general case, we study the process Y_t:=X_t-\mu_t and the connection between the a. S. (or probability) limit of Y_t and the local (or global) minima of V. In particular, when g=\ln(t) we use the simulated annealing theory

Pełny tekst źródłaThe problem of parametric drift estimation for a a Lévy-driven jump diffusion process is considered in two different settings: time-continuous and high-frequency observations. The goal is to develop explicit maximum likelihood estimators for both observation schemes that are efficient in the Hájek-Le Cam sense. The likelihood function based on time-continuous observations can be derived explicitly for jump diffusion models and leads to explicit maximum likelihood estimators for several popular model classes. We consider Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type, square-root and linear stochastic delay differential equations driven by Lévy processes in detail and prove strong consistency, asymptotic normality and efficiency of the likelihood estimators in these models. The appearance of the continuous martingale part of the observed process under the dominating measure in the likelihood function leads to a jump filtering problem in this context, since the continuous part is usually not directly observable and can only be approximated and the high-frequency limit. In the second part of this thesis the problem of drift estimation for discretely observed processes is considered. The estimators are constructed from discretizations of the time-continuous maximum likelihood estimators from the first part, where the continuous martingale part is approximated via a thresholding technique. We are able to proof that even in the case of infinite activity jumps of the driving Lévy process the estimator is asymptotically normal and efficient under weak assumptions on the jump behavior. Finally, the finite sample behavior of the estimators is investigated on simulated data. We find that the maximum likelihood approach clearly outperforms the least squares estimator when jumps are present and that the efficiency gap between both techniques becomes even more severe with growing jump intensity.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis is devoted to the study of two quite different questions, which are related by the tools that we use to study them. The first question is that of the definition of lattice gauge theories with a non-commutative structure group. Here, by non-commutative, we do not mean non-Abelian, but instead non-commutative in the general sense of non-commutative geometry. The second question is that of the behaviour of Brownian diffusions on non-compact matrix groups of a specific kind, namely groups of pseudo-orthogonal, pseudo-unitary or pseudo-symplectic matrices. In the first chapter, we investigate lattice and continuous quantum gauge theories on the Euclidean plane with a structure group that is replaced by a Zhang algebra. Zhang algebras are non-commutative analogues of groups and contain the class of Voiculescu’s dual groups. We are interested in non-commutative analogues of random gauge fields, which we describe through the random holonomy that they induce. We propose a general definition of a holonomy field with Zhang gauge symmetry, and construct such a field starting from a quantum Lévy process on a Zhang algebra. As an application, we define higher dimensional generalizations of the so-called master field. In the second chapter, we study matricial approximations of higher dimensional master fields constructed in the previous chapter. These approximations (in non-commutative distribution) are obtained by extracting blocks of a Brownian unitary diffusion (with entries in the algebras of real, complex or quaternionic numbers) and letting the dimension of these blocks tend to infinity. We divide our study into two parts: in the first one, we extract square blocks while in the second one we allow rectangular blocks. In both cases, free probability theory appears as the natural framework in which the limiting distributions are most accurately described. In the last two chapters, we use tools introduced (Zhang algebras and coloured Brauer diagrams) in the first two ones to study Brownian motion on pseudo-unitary matrices in high dimensions. We prove convergence in non-commutative distribution of the pseudo-unitary Brownian motions we consider to free with amalgamation semi-groups under the hypothesis of convergence of the normalized signature of the metric. In the split case, meaning that at least asymptotically the metric has as much negative directions as positive ones, the limiting distribution is that of a free Lévy process, which is a solution of a free stochastic differential equation. We leave open the question of such a realization of the limiting distribution in the general case. In addition we provide (intriguing) numerical evidences for the convergence of the spectral distribution of such random matrices and make two conjectures. At the end of the thesis, we prove asymptotic normality for the fluctuations
