Streszczenie:
In her novel Arabian Jazz, Diana Abu-Jaber attempts to explore the Arab American identity as something new; as an identity that exists related to, but ultimately separate from, the Arab and American identities from which it was originally created. This thesis discusses the emergence of the depiction of the Arab American female identity in the novel, examining how the characters explore issues of race, class, imperialism, and sex within both the Arab and the American cultures as those issues shape female identity. The thesis also presents a rhetorical analysis of the speeches that allow the characters a voice with respect to how identity is shaped and reshaped throughout the novel.

Streszczenie:
The thesis explores the work of the above four contemporary children's writers, in relation to post-1960s Western society. I concentrate primarily on depictions of children, adults and relationships between the two, and the way in which these depictions engage with changing social attitudes. I also place the novels in their literary-historical context, examining whether or not they continue the literary traditions of their predecessors in children's literature, or whether their central focus is on contemporary social engagement. I also consider whether literary traditions (particularly fairytale discourse) are re-worked and reinvented in accordance with contemporary social issues. In Western society, the post-1960s era has brought widespread social changes, which include the democratisation of childhood - 'children's rights' is now a well-used term, both legally and in everyday life. Despite this, however, today's society seems to be experiencing unprecedented confusion and uncertainty in its attitudes towards children, particularly with regard to child-liberation and various reactions against it. Nonetheless, the post-1960s era has witnessed an intense interest in childhood - the many debates and disagreements are evidence of this. Throughout the thesis, I examine the way in which Dahl, Fine, Jones and Rowling engage with (or react against) these contemporary childhood issues. Chapter one outlines the social context and provides information on the most prominent issues: children's rights; parenting advice and educational issues (both of which focus predominantly on liberalism versus strict control); children as a burden or a pleasure; freedom versus guidance; the death of childhood versus the prolonging of dependency; children as innocent angels or destructive demons. Chapters two to six go on to explore these issues in the literary texts: chapter two concentrates on family relationships; chapter three examines individual adult characters, while chapters four and five focus in detail on the portrayal of child characters, including their relationships with adults and the development of their potential. Chapter six investigates the depiction of magic, and the way in which it can be viewed as a form of psychological power for children (and so can feature in realist as well as fantasy texts). The thesis as a whole, therefore, examines the novels' relationship with both literary and social discourse, predominantly with regard to the adult-child relationship.

Ismail, Farah. "'The shifting perils of the strange and the familiar ' : representations of the Orient in children's fantasy literature". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/31214.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates the function of representations of the Orient in fantasy literature for children with a focus on The Chronicles of Narnia as exemplifying its most problematic manifestation. According to Edward Said (2003:1-2), the Orient is one of Europe’s ‘deepest and most recurring images of the Other… [which]…has helped to define Europe (or the West) as its contrasting image, idea, personality, experience.’ However, values are grouped around otherness in fantasy literature as in no other genre, facilitating what J.R.R. Tolkien (2001:58) identifies as Recovery, the ‘regaining of a clear view… [in order that] the things seen clearly may be freed from the drab blur of triteness or familiarity.’ In Chapter One, it is argued that this gives the way the genre deals with spaces and identities characterized as Oriental, which in Western stories are themselves vested with qualities of strangeness, a peculiar significance. Specifically, new ways of perceiving the function of representations of the Other are explored in the genre of fantasy. Edward Said’s concept of imaginative geographies is then introduced and the significance of this concept in light of the fictional spaces of fantasy is explored. Next, fantasy’s links to representations of the Orient in Romance literature are explained, and the way in which these representations are determined by the heritage of Orientalist discourse is examined. Finally, the issue of children’s literature as colonial space and the implications of this in a fantasy framework are discussed. Chapter Two begins by introducing C.S. Lewis and explaining the ideology at work in The Chronicles of Narnia. The order in which The Chronicles should be approached is then established, and the construction of identity in the first three of The Chronicles is examined. Chapter Three focuses on The Horse and His Boy, the book in which the pseudo-Oriental space of Calormen most prominently figures. Chapter Four is devoted to the last two books of The Chronicles with emphasis on the role played by the Other in the destruction of Narnia in The Last Battle. In Chapter Five, I sum up the essential problems of representing the Orient as illustrated by my study of The Chronicles of Narnia. Representations of the Orient in The Chronicles are compared with pseudo-Oriental constructions in Castle in the Air, by Diana Wynne Jones, Emperor Mage and The Woman Who Rides Like A Man by Tamora Pierce and both Voices and The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula K. Le Guin. The similarities and differences evident in the representations of the Orient in all these works are traced and the implications of them are explored. Le Guin in particular is noted as an author who demonstrates some ways to break free of Orientalist paradigms of identity.

Payne, Rachel Page. "Baumrind's Authoritative Parenting Style: A Model for Creating Autonomous Writers". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3518.

Streszczenie:
Though Quintilian introduced the term in loco parentis in his Institutio Oratoria by suggesting that teachers think of themselves as parents of a student's mind, composition scholars have let parenting as a metaphor for teaching fall by the wayside in recent discussions of classroom authority. Podis and Podis have recently revived the term, though, and investigated the ways writing teachers enact Lakoff's "Strict Father" and "Nurturing Mother" authority models. Unfortunately, their treatment of these two opposite authority styles reduces classroom authority styles to a mutually exclusive binary of two less than satisfactory options. I propose clinical and developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind's taxonomy of parenting styles as the ideal way to reform our thinking as a field about the authority model we should adopt in our writing classrooms. While Baumrind includes the inferior models Podis and Podis work from in her authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, she found that the authoritative style, which is both strict and nurturing, promises the best results for parenting children: autonomy and academic achievement. By applying her descriptions of authoritative parents and the outcomes for their children to the practices of composition instructors and their students, I reveal how useful Baumrind's taxonomy of parenting styles could be for a field that often uses nuanced terms for authority without either clearly defining them or backing claims with replicable, aggregable, data-driven (RAD) research. If our field chooses to adopt Baumrind's terminology and definitions, then, we will be able to communicate about classroom authority in terms anchored in a coherent paradigm and garner more respect for our field as we probe the outcomes of Baumrind's authoritative parenting style as a college composition teaching style through our own empirical research.

This dissertation analyses contemporary Arab-American literary productions by female writers, specifically, Shakir’s collection of memoirs Bint Arab and her two short stories “Oh Lebanon” and “Name Calling,” as well as a selection of novels, Abu Jaber’s Arabian Jazz and Crescent, Darraj’s The Inheritance of Exile, Alia Yunis’s The Night Counter, and Laila Halaby’s Once in a Promised Land. It shows how these works construct a space which enables them to investigate questions of identity, culture, ethnicity and gender. Identity conflicts around everyday matters like physical appearance, color, dress codes, veiling, chastity, and marriage are addressed by drawing upon critical works by Arab-American female writers and psycho-social studies on biculturalism. Moreover, this work emphasizes coalition-building with women of color by extending Anzaldua’s concept of the “consciousness of the borderlands” to encompass works by Arab-American female writers. Theories by post-colonial thinkers, particularly Said’s studies on Orientalism, also contribute to the dissertation’s questioning of the Oriental model of womanhood. Finally, this dissertation envisages critical works that study storytelling and its role in creating a surrogate home for “exilic” identities, with special emphasis on the Scheherazadian narrative. This project views literary productions as an appropriate way to investigate social, political, cultural and ethnic issues. It shows how writings by Arab-American women contribute to exploring inner identity conflicts, how they connect with other minority groups, and how they create a new sense of home

Uncovering the feminine myth has been the topic of numerous studies. In recent years, research has focused on the return of ancient images of the goddess as the primary metaphor for the feminine myth. Utilizing feminine typologies from Jungian archetypalists and feminist scholars, this study summarizes the research on the archetypal feminine in order to analyze Diane di Prima's Loba poems. An analysis of the poems is undertaken and reveals patterns of feminine images which are consistent with other revisionist literature by women. The analysis is then used to frame a production of poems as a ritual celebrating the Loba as goddess. As Christine Downing suggests in The Goddess, women need images of the goddess to recognize the divine in themselves. The adaptation of the Loba poems for performance creates such an image. It also creates a theatre piece with what Sue-Ellen Case calls "woman as subject." As a result of this study, the goals of feminist archetypal theory are advanced as well as the goals of feminist theatre.

Eroticism is a variation of human sexual activity that goes beyond the penetration. It binds to sexuality and human sexual practices, in this sense, it is related to the privacy of the human being, besides being a conscious practice of the imagination and of the human desire. Eroticism is one of the features that differ animal and human. So, in eroticism, there is the awakening of desire, constructed from the subtlety of the bodies presentation, allowing arise, at that moment, interest in pleasure. Under the vision of eroticism, we will analyze the work Diana Hunter, written by Marcia Denser, in which the main character is a woman who experiences sexual adventures, since the focus is to give and receive sexual pleasure. In this work, the central subject is sexuality and female identity, which are addressed through heterosexualmeetings of pure eroticism. Therefore, the eroticism is essential to the reflection on Denser´s narrative and is necessary to understand how it is used by the author to think how the phallocentric ideal interfere in female sexual desire and how Denser uses sexuality and desire as a female liberating, besides dicussing an ideology that pleasure is restricted to men, since, by social conventions, the male figure is linked to the representation of power and dominance and female figure is related to the inferiority, devoted to women. Thus, the erotic language is a facet used by the writer to propose changes in the woman´s posture in the midst of a prejudiced society. We will analyze, from concepts of eroticism, the relations built up between this and the assertation of identity of the women in the narrative, because it is through erotic aesthetic that Marcia Denser introduces a discourse of identity assertation in which the expressions of the body, of the sexuality and of the female desire are addressed. The theoretical framework is basea on the concepts of: Octavio Paz (1994), Jesus Antônio Durigan (1986), Lúcia Castelo Branco (2004), Michel Foucault (1982; 2001), Georges Bataille (1987), Sarane Alexandrian (1993), Anthony Giddens (1993), Glaydson Silva (2003), Mary Del Priore (2011), Marina Colassanti (1997), Simonde de Beauvoir (1967), Miclelle Perrot (2003), Stuart Hall (2006)among others.

This essay examines the inherent instability present in Diana Wynne Jones’ 1986 novel Howl’s Moving Castle. I suggest that in relying on the ambiguity of the story and the setting, Jones creates not only a more complex universe, but allows the characters to be multidimensional -- both literally and figuratively -- without having any stable selves. Using deconstruction as a (non-existent) foundation for my analysis, I contend that the strength of the story is in the looseness of it. Thus, by using a Derridean approach with added Cixousian feminist elements and a heap of Kristevian intertextuality, I further argue that Jones invites the reader to embrace the ambiguity of identity by closely analyzing the conflicting behaviours of the two main characters in the novel, Sophie Hatter and Wizard Howl. In conclusion, I argue that Diana Wynne Jones through subverting classic fairy tale tropes in an ingenious way, suggests that there is no such thing as a final finished growing person and that there is comfort to be found in embracing this incompleteness.

Who tells the true story of the world? The western civilisation is highly influenced by the written word. The writings of ancient philosophers, poets and religious authorities still have a strong cultural impact. Myths and religion as well as philosophical and political systems effects our self-concept. These models are all unified by there ambition to explain mankind and tell the story of reality. This essay examines two published diaries in order to discuss their relation to the common story of the world. The objects of the study are Feberboken, by Stina Aronson (written in 1934) and Allt, by Martina Lowden (written in 2006). The diary is a place for the personal story, it gives the writer an opportunity to confront the surrounding world. The conventional conception of reality can be questioned. I will use Pierre Bourdieus theory about the biographic I to discuss the Self in the texts. Two definitions of mimesis will be treated. The traditional meaning of the term, given by Plato, and the postmodern point of view, represented by Gilles Deleuze. I aim to investigate how Feberboken and Allt are confronting the generic image of reality.

The Girl Gang: Women Writers of the New York City Beat Community seeks to revise our understanding of the Beat community and literary tradition by critically engaging the lives and work of five women Beat writers: Diane di Prima, Joyce Johnson, Hettie Jones, Carol Bergé, and Mimi Albert. This dissertation argues that, from a position of marginality, these women developed as protofeminist writers, interrogating the traditional female gender role and constructing radical critiques of normative ideas in fiction and poetry in ways that resisted the male Beats' general subordination of women and that anticipated the feminist movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. A project of recovery and criticism, The Girl Gang provides literary biographies that explore how each writer's experience as a marginalized female writer within an otherwise countercultural community affected the development of her work; it also analyzes a range of works (published and unpublished texts from various genres, written from the early 1950s through the turn of the twenty-first century) in order to illustrate how each writer distinctively employs and revises mainstream and Beat literary and cultural conventions. The dissertation's critical analyses examine each writer's engagement in various literary, cultural, and social discourses, drawing attention to their incisive and provocative treatment of thematic issues that are central to the postwar countercultural critique of hegemonic norms --including fundamental Beat questions of identity, authenticity, and subjectivity-- and that are developed through experimentation with literary conventions. Ultimately, The Girl Gang argues that the literary achievements of the New York City women Beats collectively reconceptualize the prevailing notion of the Beat community and canon.

In a number of didactic and sapiential works of the Middle Ages, the animal is used as a representation of the prince and his entourage. The animal is sometimes a filter, sometimes a mask, looking at the princely courts by more or less involved authors. They find in the animal the most expressive tool to expose some values or to denounce some behaviours. Our study is based on a variety of sources, mainly the Calila et Dimna composed in Castile in the middle of the 13th century for the Infante Alfonso (future Alfonso X); the analysis includes a study of the Calila et Dimna textual path: what are the differences between Indian (Panchatantra), Persian, Arabic (Kalila wa Dimna), Hebrew, Castilian and Latin (Jean de Capoue and Raymond de Béziers) versions ? The study is supported by a comparison between some Indian, Persian and Arabic texts offering a thematic relevance in the animal world with this treatise. Latin and French (Roman de Renart, Roman de Fauvel secondarily) texts complete the corpus. We are also wondering about the Greco-Latin antique fable influence on the treatise (Esope, Avianus), concerning the choice of the animals and their characteristics. The modes of transmission to the Occident of other texts that followed parallel ways (Sandbar, Secret des Secrets, Roman des Sept Sages de Rome) are reviewed. We will be wondering whether the Calila et Dimna was not, as le Roman de Renart or le Roman de Fauvel, the caricature of a certain curial milieu that contemporary readers had no difficulty to recognise; Both the Arabic and the Castilian version of the treatise are concerned, on the understanding that each successive translator contextualised this vision of court. We will seek to understand the function and the mechanisms of these animal masks: beyond the complex bestiary, which will be thoroughly analysed, how and to what extent the animal is used as a filter for political criticism, how it constitutes the mirror of a court life, and what are the reflected images of the courtiers ? What animals are chosen (depending on the version) to embody one courtier or another ? Which moral precepts, character traits or symbolic values, each « humanised » animal is transmitting ? Why use animals ? Are they there to amuse princes or to allow the authors to tell more than they could with human heroes ? Is the animal a mask or a mirror ?

This thesis examines the use of religious metaphor as it applies to food in two literary works by Diana Abu-Jaber. First, The Language of Baklava, a culinary memoir published in 2005, reveals aspects of cultural identity and memory through food and metaphor. Second, Abu-Jabers most recent novel, Birds of Paradise, explores complex family relationships enacted through metaphor. The analyses of textual representations of food rely on a theoretical framework that includes a cultural anthropological perspective, as well as a rhetorical perspective, and uses textual analysis to examine metaphor and food narratives in literature.

Streszczenie:
abstract: The comparative study of the poetics of landscape of the Argentinian poet Diana Bellessi in Sur (1998) and the U.S. poet Mary Oliver in What Do We Know (2002) reveal how each writer acknowledges discourse and perception as means to bridge the nature/culture dichotomy and to unsettle the American landscape from cultural and epistemological assumptions that perpetuate the disconnection with matter. While Bellessi re–signifies the historical and cultural landscape drawn by European colonization in order to establish a dialogue with the voices of the past related to a present–day quest to reconnect with nature, Oliver articulates an ontological and phenomenological expression to reformulate prevailing notions of cognizing materiality aiming to overcome the culture/nature divide. I therefore examine the interrelationship between perception, language and nature in Bellessi’s and Oliver’s poetic works by deploying Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological theory of perception into material feminist theoretical works by Karen Barad and Susan Hekman. In so doing, I demonstrate how both poets act on language to forge a non–dualistic expression that, in allowing matter as an agentic force that relates with humans in dynamics of mutual impact and intra–activity, entails a phenomenological and onto–epistemological approach to ground language in materiality and produce ethical discursive practices to relate with nature. I argue that Bellessi’s and Oliver’s approach toward nature proves as necessary in the articulation of efforts leading to overcome the nature/culture dichotomy and thus, to address ecological and environmental concerns.

American society has been described as a melting pot of different peoples of multiple nationalities with various cultures coming together to form a nation. The history of America depicts a continent that was sparsely populated by the Indian tribes of America who are the original residents of the continent and whose autonomy has been jeopardized. The social dominance and identity of the different ethno-racial groups in the American society can be attributed to the time of their arrival in America and their numbers as well, giving a stronger social position to those who arrived earlier: The question of priority has been the biggest challenge to the minority groups that came to America later, and whose numbers are still low compared to other communities. Thus, they have tended to be made to feel like outsiders in a country to where their ancestors came and were buried. One minority group that has suffered the stigma of not being easily accepted in the American social fabric is the plural and diversified Arab-American community.

Within the scope of recent work on cultural transfer, Robert Dion devoted a book (L’Allemagne de Liberté: sur la germanophilie des intellectuels québécois, 2007) observing that several contributors of Quebec journal Liberté expressed a perception of Germany mostly tinged with the concept of fascination. In the wake of this study which focuses on articles and essays published in Liberté and concerning Germany, the present thesis provides an in depth analysis of short stories and novels, written by three collaborators from the journal: Diane-Monique Daviau, Yvon Rivard and Pierre Turgeon. Featuring rather extensive references to Germany, their texts offer a perception of the “Other” which can, from the point of view of intercultural studies, be considered in the perspective of an “encounter” between cultures. It is therefore the relationship with the German language, geographical territory, history and literature which we endeavour to characterize, seeking not only to appreciate and describe the nature of the relationship to “otherness”, but also to briefly discuss the formal consequences of a literary staging of the “Other” – polyphonic practices, types of intertextual processes, etc. This thesis presents innovative thinking on the themes of exile, decentring and migration in contemporary Quebec literature. It links the German framework to the self-investigation performed by the Daviau, Rivard and Turgeon protagonists, revealing that in their personal search, these characters acknowledge their own precariousness, and, in certain cases, a “legacy of poverty” (Yvon Rivard) – two omnipresent themes in Quebec literature.

The present thesis seeks to address, in a reading of the text Le bain de Diane by Pierre Klossowski, the specific modalities through which literature aims to understand the complex ties between concepts of 'immanence' and 'transcendence'. To do so, I begin by introducing the concepts necessary for such an undertaking ⎯ reading authors such as Plato, Apuleius, Pierre Hadot, Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault, all of whom have contributed to the concept of the 'demon' as described in Klossowski’s work ⎯ and by introducing the concept of 'simulacrum', a key concept in Klossowsi’s writing. By tracing the creation and representation of these concepts in various texts and then identifying them in Le bain de Diane, I attempt to demonstrate the importance of literary figuration in our complex relationship with concepts of the 'sensitive' and the 'suprasensitive'.

Using unwoven fragments, pieces of the past, of the present and even dreams for the future, Les rubans bleus’s narrator reflects on the meaning of the different women in her life. Thus, she attemps to sew the lineage from which she came and to weed a story that will stay frayed. The different women encountered structure the reattached narrative, bringing together like a quilt, in a heterogenous manner, the memories of an “I”. In the narrative Ma mère et Gainsbourg by Diane-Monique Daviau, the omnipresent pattern of the dress constitutes an envelop for the psyche that allows an imaginary continuum between a mother and a daughter, the narrator. She describes this dress as having holes in it. The reoccurence of this dress in the text prefigures the absence that is felt by the daughter as she mourns her mother. The narrator puts forth the many holes in the dress through gaps which read like silences and emptiness between the mother and daughter. These snags in the dress imprinted on the narrator’s identity and founded a “burdon-heritage” that the narrator wears, and shares in her book. With her writing, she invites the reader to a slow passage through the mourning process (Anzieu, Delvaux, Green, Harel). The latter presents itself as the thread with which the narrator will sew the pieces of her life together, which in turn will allow for a better fit pertaining to the figure of the absent-mother, and from there, to her own identity. Hence, the narrator ties together childhood memories, dreams and reflections about loss and emptiness, like a patchwork, giving form to her text, that of a mourning dress.

Streszczenie:
Trees, as threshold beings, effectively blur the line between the real world and fantastical alternate worlds, and destabilise traditional binary classification systems that distinguish humanity, and Culture, from Nature. Though the presence of trees is often peripheral to the main narrative action, their representation is necessary within the fantasy trope. Their consistent inclusion within fantasy texts of the twentieth century demonstrates an enduring arboreal legacy that cannot be disregarded in its contemporary relevance, whether they are represented individually or in collective forests. The purpose of my dissertation is to conduct a study of various prominent fantasy texts of the twentieth century, including the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Robert Holdstock, Diana Wynne Jones, Natalie Babbitt, and J.K. Rowling. In scrutinising these texts, and drawing on insights offered by liminal, ecocritical, ecofeminist, mythological and psychological theorists, I identify the primary function of trees within fantasy narratives as liminal: what Victor Turner identifies as a ‘betwixt and between’ state (1991:95) where binaries are suspended in favour of embracing potentiality. This liminality is constituted by three central dimensions: the ecological, the mythological, and the psychological. Each dimension informs the relationship between the arboreal as grounded in reality, and represented in fantasy. Trees, as literary and cinematic arboreal totems are positioned within fantasy narratives in such a way as to emphasise an underlying call to bio-conservatorship, to enable a connection to a larger scope of cultural expectation, and to act as a means through which human self-awareness is developed.

The aim of this essay was to understand the thematic and discursive aspects of some literary chronicles of two Cape-Verdean authors, Dina Salústio and Daniel Medina and to prove the humanitarian and pedagogical aspects of the their writings. At first we did a study of theoretical contents about Portuguese chronicles with the aim to survey aspects concerning the evolution of this style throughout time, since the Middle Ages until Contemporary Era, always in a pragmatic perspective and we have discussed the characteristics which formed the style with emphasis on subjectivity, versatility, objectivity, style between oral and literary, everyday life and dialogism. Then, in methodological terms we opted to convoke the ethos of Amossy and Maingueneau to study the writings. Secondly, through ten Cape-Verdean literary chronicles, being five from each author we went on with the critical analysis from which we confirmed, from a thematic analysis, a humanitarian and pedagogical concern, once we noticed some troubles with problems concerning the idiosyncrasy of the Cape-Verdean people, such as the loss of values in terms of education and instruction whether in the bosom of the family or at school, a concern with the underprivileged, where we highlight orphan children whose parents are alive, the abandon of mental sick people and children who live in the streets, premature pregnancy, juvenile prostitution among others. The way the writers of chronicles positioned themselves concerning the approach of the themes allowed us to project the discursive ethos in these two sensitive personalities, sober and committed with the noble values which affect the human being. The same way, we have realized as relevant aspects of the writings, subjectivity, individuality and discursive personality, brevity, the dialog in a free indirect style, everyday life and literature combined with some rhetorical resources which allow us to verify the serious and ironic tones of the subjects which deal with thematic matters.
