Pełny tekst źródłaConversational AI has received a growing interest in recent years from both the research community and the industry. Products have started to emerge (e.g. Amazon's Alexa, Google's Home, Apple's Siri) but performances of such systems are still far from human-likeness communication. As an example, conversation with the aforementioned systems is often limited to basic question-response interactions. Among all the reasons why people communicate, the exchange of information and the strengthening of social bound appeared to be the main ones. In dialogue research, the two aforementioned problems are well known and addressed using dialogue act classification and emotion/sentiment recognition. Those problems are made even more challenging as they involve spoken dialogues in contrast to written text. A spoken conversation is a complex and collective activity that has a specific dynamic and structure. Thus, there is a need to adapt both natural language processing and natural language understanding techniques which have been tailored for written texts as it does not share the same characteristics. This thesis focuses on methods for spoken dialogue understanding and specifically tackles the problem of spoken dialogues classification with a particular focus on dialogue act and emotion/sentiment labels. Our contributions can be divided into two parts: in the first part, we address the problem of automatically labelling English spoken dialogues. In this part, we start by formulating this problem as a translation problem which leads us to propose a seq2seq model for dialogue act classification. Then, our second contribution focuses on a scenario relying on small annotated datasets and involves both pre-training a hierarchical transformer encoder and proposing a new benchmark for evaluation. This first part addresses the problem of spoken language classification in monolingual (i.e. English) and monomodal (i.e. text) settings. However, spoken dialogue involves phenomena such as code-switching (when a speaker switch languages within a conversation) and relies on multiple channels to communicate (e.g.} audio or visual).Hence, the second part is dedicated to two extensions of the previous contributions in two settings: multilingual and multimodal. We first address the problem of dialogue act classification when multiple languages are involved and thus, we extend the two previous contributions to a multilingual scenario. In our last contribution, we explore a multimodal scenario and focus on the representation and fusion of modalities in the scope of emotion prediction

This work, which even the true friends or supporters of Rousseau have hesitated to publish because of its strangeness, has long been considered the document of Rousseau's paranoid delusion and was held at a distance by literary researchers. This was his status until the interventions of Michel Foucault and Jean-Marie Goulemot.Is it for this reason that the studies not only on their content, but also on their writing, their manuscripts and their editions do not advance at the same rate as his other works, in particular the Confessions? About Confessions, there are many studies on manuscripts and editions. In this thesis, it will be necessary to reconstitute the textual history of the Dialogues by effectively using not only his correspondence and the four manuscripts of the Dialogues, but also the Memoirs and the correspondences of the contemporaries. The ambition is threefold : to clarify the history of writing, to put the manuscripts in order and to continue the examination until the first edition of Geneva by his friends

This is the basic position of the present thesis, as applied to the teaching of Russian. After a survey of the existing works on dialogue in the Russian and French traditions, the thesis analyzes a large recorded corpus of spontaneous Russian dialogues and demonstrates concretely that in order to make use of it pedagogically it is necessary first to have a typology, both linguistic and pragmatic, of the dialogues. Finally the thesis examines, from this point of view, several existing handbooks, and formulates a certain number of concrete proposals whose aim is to achieve a real didactics of dialogue

Pełny tekst źródłaThis dissertation proposes to study six epistemic discourse markers (DMs) of spoken French and Italian, specialized in the dialogic operation that allows for accepting the truth-value of a propositional content proposed by an interlocutor and for grounding the propositional content in the common ground of the speakers.The originality of our research lays in our non aprioristic approach to the epistemic DMs of dialogue.Starting from a solid definition of the notions of DM, epistemicity and intersubjective negotiation, we collected a representative corpus of d’accord, mh, voilà in spoken French dialogues and ho capito, mh, esatto in spoken Italian dialogues. The corpus is composed of 60 epistemic occurrences per form, and takes into account several different speakers and contexts.The manual annotation process of the corpus revealed that the six DMs have a large and complex spectrum of functions, belonging to different levels of discourse structure.Accordingly, in the framework of a modular and corpus-driven approach, we tried to combine theoretical aspects, operationalization of theoretical choices in an annotation scheme, and analysis of the data.A comparison between the DMs of French and Italian, supported by statistical significance tests, finally showed the remarkable similarity, at the local and global levels of dialogue, between d’accord and ho capito, mh and mh, voilà and esatto

Four studies looked at the potential influence of the interaction modes (written/vocal), the users knowledge in MMD (beginners/advanced), the users knowledge in data processing (beginners/computer science specialist) and the difficulty level of the information retrieval tasks. The results show that collaboration : (1) is more important in vocal than in written mode ; (2 ) decreases when users acquire knowledge in MMD; (3) is very weak in people with good knowledge in computer science; and (4) becomes more important when the users need to acquire knowledge in an unknown situation. The grounding appears to be then an active and essential process in order to build the functional representation that is necessary for the adaptation and success of communication when facing new situations

For example, this is the case when human-machine interactions are concerned. Indeed, the machine has to deal with several sources of uncertainty to exhibit a consistent behaviour to the user. First, it has to deal with the different behaviours of the users and also with a change in the behaviour of a user when he gets used to the machine. Secondly, the communication between the user and the machine can be noisy, which makes the transfer of information more complicated. The objective is thus to deal with the different sources of uncertainty to show a consistent behaviour. Usually, dealing with uncertainties is performed by introducing models : models of the users, the task concerned or the decision. However, the accuracy of the solution depends on the accuracy of expert knowledge used to build the models. If machine learning, through reinforcement learning, has successfully avoided the use of model for the decision and removed \textit{ad hoc} knowledge about it, expert knowledge is still necessary. The thesis presented in this work is that some constraints related to human expertise can be slackened without a loss of generality related to the introduction of models

Pełny tekst źródłaThis research presents a morphosyntactical, intonational and gestural analysis of two phenomena inherent to spontaneous (not read) speech, namely decondensation and formulation. Drawing on the findings of previous studies, it seeks to elaborate interpretative hypotheses on the grounds of a corpus made of a 35-minute dialogue between two female friends from the Paris region. A complementary corpus (6 minutes of spontaneous narratives produced by two female inhabitants of Birkirkara (Malta), aged 23 and 82) was used to explore the decondensation phenomenon in spoken Maltese. In the first part of this thesis, a series of quantitative analyses on decondensation points out to certain tendencies, such as a massive presence of connectives and a frequency of occurrence of preambles that is inversely proportional to the number of their constituents. Differences between the two speakers have been noticed. A qualitative study shows that narrative sequences and certain coenunciative relations between the speakers are favourable to the occurrence of decondensation within the dialogue. The analysis of decondensation in Maltese suggests that this discursive phenomenon may not be exclusive to spoken French. The second part deals with formulation markers and looks closely at the behaviour of gaze and gesture during the occurrence of such markers. The majority of these markers in the corpus are not accompanied by gaze aversion from the speaker’s side. Formulation markers are also regularly accompanied by deictic gestures as well as gestures that show ongoing linguistic operations (capturing, cutting, shaping of successive referents)

Pełny tekst źródłaLaughter is a social vocalization universal across cultures and languages. It is ubiquitous in our dialogues and able to serve a wide range of functions. Laughter has been studied from several perspectives, but the classifications proposed are hard to integrate. Despite being crucial in our daily interaction, relatively little attention has been devoted to the study of laughter in conversation, attempting to model its sophisticated pragmatic use, neuro-correlates in perception and development in children. In the current thesis a new comprehensive framework for laughter analysis is proposed, crucially grounded in the assumption that laughter has propositional content, arguing for the need to distinguish different layers of analysis, similarly to the study of speech: form, positioning, semantics and pragmatics. A formal representation of laughter meaning is proposed and a multilingual corpus study (French, Chinese and English) is conducted in order to test the proposed framework and to deepen our understanding of laughter use in adult conversation. Preliminary investigations are conducted on the viability of a laughter form-function mapping based on acoustic features and on the neuro-correlates involved in the perception of laughter serving different functions in natural dialogue. Our results give rise to novel generalizations about the placement, alignment, semantics and function of laughter, stressing the high pragmatic skills involved in its production and perception. The development of the semantic and pragmatic use of laughter is observed in a longitudinal corpus study of 4 American-English child-mother pairs from 12 to 36 months of age. Results show that laughter use undergoes important development at each level analysed, which complies with what could be hypothesised on the base of phylogenetic data, and that laughter can be an effective means to track cognitive/communicative development, and potential difficulties or delays at a very early stage
