Streszczenie:
Over recent years, the interest in the study of subjective well-being (SWB) has increased more and more. One of the main discussions among academics and policy makers is whether SWB may be correlated with the level of both relative and absolute level of income. Subjective well-being measures are gaining popularity as a proxy of utility, even though its relationship with income is still unclear. In his seminal work, (Easterlin1974) basically pointed out that there is no relation between average income of a country and its level of happiness. Nevertheless, other influential works by (Sacks2013, Stevenson2008) argued that the correlation exists, it follows a linear-log relationship and moreover there is no evidence of a satiation point. The primary goal of this dissertation is to study more in depth the relationship between income and subjective well-being, in particular with life satisfaction and happiness, trying to challenge both `schools of thought'. Furthermore, in contrast with theories of `happy degrowth', I try to show the importance of economic growth and prosperity in determining happiness, and more in general human well-being.

Neri, Marta <1995&gt. "Fashion e-commerce: a study of the elements determining the profitability of an online sale channel within the fashion industry". Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/20650.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
E-commerce has been the subject of a massive growth in the course of the last decade, with the fashion industry being one the the main beneficiary of this growth, being the largest B2C eCommerce market segment with a market size estimated at US$752.5 billion in 2020 and a growth compound rate of 9.1% per year. In such a context, fashion e-commerce is easily identifiable as one of the most profitable sectors globally, but at the same time one of the most competitive as well. This thesis starts with a review of the history and the roots of the modern e-commerce website, goes on outlining a theoretical framework touching e-commerce definitions, e-commerce types, e-commerce main benefits compared to other sale channels. It then proceeds exposing a detailed practical framework of how an e-commerce is composed, what are the current main e-commerce platforms and their peculiarities, and what are the main fashion e-commerce trend strategies and best practices. Finally, the aim of the thesis is to study empirically, through the somministration of online questionnaires, which are the leading key success factors for a profitable e-commerce in the fashion industry, with a particular focus on whether the most successful factors in generating purchase intention are related to the quality and the ease of use of the website or the marketing and communication activities that the brands carry out around their e-commerce websites. Involvement with the product category is used as the moderator element influencing the studied correlations.

Del, Fabbro Giorgia <1997&gt. "Sustainable fashion and the role of personality traits in determining the Purchase likelihood and the Willingness to Pay for sustainable apparel". Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/21217.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Sustainability has become a global and important issue, as a consequence of the environmental degradation that can be tracked back to the industrial revolution. States, firms and individuals must take actions in order to avoid environmental catastrophes, by creating and respecting new laws, changing the production system and adopting different consumption behaviors. In ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, the fashion industry is one of the most important players, since it is sadly known to be characterised by high water usage, pollution, labour issues in developing countries and the difficulty of recycling fashion products which eventually finish in landfills or are incinerated. The concept of sustainable fashion was introduced for the first time during the sixties when fashion consumers started to reflect on the repercussions of their consumption behaviour on the environment. This study adds to the topic of sustainable fashion, in particular to the sustainable apparel consumption behavior. The aim is to prove the relationship between the individual’s personality traits and the purchase likelihood and willingness to pay for sustainable apparel. The personality traits examined are impulsivity, localism, need for uniqueness and frugality, with the additional purpose to test the moderation effect of anxiety on the relationship between impulsivity and purchase likelihood/ WTP and the influence of cynicism in moderating the relation of frugality with purchase likelihood and WTP for sustainable apparel. The hypotheses have been tested through a quantitative research model; the answers have been collected by means of a questionnaire involving a sample of 100 people. The hypothesized relationships have been tested through partial least squares structural equation modeling technique. The results reveal that cynicism and need for uniqueness have a significant impact on purchase likelihood and willingness to pay. The findings of this study are a contribution to the analysis of purchasing behavior and willingness to pay for sustainable apparel; they may help marketers in planning targeted strategies and methods to increase sales. Despite of the increasing interest in sustainable fashion characterizing the last few years, this argument is still new and little known to a large part of the population, as this research demonstrates. This study, compared to others who deal with the purchasing likelihood or willingness to pay for sustainable fashion, analyze empirically some specific personality traits. Impulsivity, localism, need for uniqueness, frugality, anxiety and cynicism have been specifically taken into consideration because it has been scientifically proven that they describe a consumer concerned about the environment and/or a fashion addict buyer. By testing and evaluating the hypotheses it is possible to identify which are (or are not), the characteristics of a typical sustainable fashion consumer and increase the awareness on this important topic.

The analysis of three companies that have jointly considered the technical and the social systems while designing and implementing the new digital technologies shows how and to what extent the Socio-Technical Systems (STS) principles are nowadays adopted, thereby indicating the possibility that the STS theory can (re) become central in both theory and managerial practices. Thereby we propose an ‘actualized’ sociotechnical design approach, capable in aligning an organization to the rapid and radical change that come along with the digitalization and indicate that the application of STS-informed design methods, such as Agile and Design Thinking, oriented more to action and intervention, mirroring the actual act of designing in a dynamic way, but also offer organizations the opportunity to embrace a broader stakeholder base.

Streszczenie:
After having discussed how agreement can determine Case in Chapter 4, this chapter moves on to discuss how Case can determine (and restrict) agreement. In many languages, the verb can only agree with arguments without overt case-marking. In others, accusative or dative arguments can agree as well. The distribution of agreement and case-marking is highly systematic, which has led researchers to propose that if a language allows agreement with any argument, this must include arguments without case-marking. It is shown that this analysis can capture such generalizations and extend them to the domain of ditransitive clauses, as well. This provides further evidence for analyses of Case as hierarchically organized sets of features, and shows that the framework argued for can make testable predictions.

Streszczenie:
Chapter 1 illustrates the importance of means of transportation in the development of international law, and the modern relevance of transit of energy via pipelines in this respect. The chapter sets the framework and method used in the study. Key concepts (transit, energy, and pipelines) and the scope of application of the treaties (ratione loci and ratione materiae) examined in the study are explained. It explains the rules of treaty interpretation that are used in the study for determining the scope and content of obligations regarding transit of energy, for identifying the nature of these obligations with a view to establishing standing to invoke international responsibility in case of their breach, and for determining the relationship between treaty rules and customary international law. It focuses on the role of subsequent agreements and practice, which is extensively used in this study as a means of treaty interpretation. The elements of an internationally wrongful act are then discussed. Emphasis is placed on attribution of conduct of private entities, and on the dual function of countermeasures under the law of international responsibility.

Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) are a necessary ingredient in the calculation of cross sections at collider experiments with hadron beams. This chapter explores the techniques of determining the PDFs and their uncertainties, based on global analyses of data sets arising from a variety of hard-scattering processes. PDFs are determined at leading order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order, with the corresponding orders of hard coefficients and evolution. Differences in the PDFs of different orders, and in their uncertainties, are described. Combinations of PDFs from different global fitting groups are discussed, and several useful tools for comparisons of PDFs are described.

[Gelfond and Lifschitz, 1991] introduced simple disjunctive logic programs and defined the answer set semantics called GL-semantics. We observed that the requirement of GL-semantics, i.e., an answer set should be a minimal model of the GL-reduct may be too strong and exclude some answer sets that would be reasonably acceptable. To address this, we present a novel and more permissive semantics, called determining inference semantics.

In 2013, Executive Order 13642, Making Open and Machine Readable the New Default for Government Information (GPO 2013), and associated policies issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB 2013) mandated that all data be made public by default unless those data are protected from release by one or more authorities. Staff at all National Park Service (NPS) units where the Inventory & Monitoring Division conducts activities identified resources that warrant some level of data protection, and default rules to be used when disseminating information about those resources. In nearly all cases, information about taxa on the federal list of taxa with conservation status (USFWS 2019) were identified as taxa about which data must be protected from public release. This report documents the creation of a standard dataset of federally protected taxa for each NPS unit to use in developing public-access versions of inventory & monitoring data sets developed by the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program.

An abridged version of this technical report has been submitted to KR 2000. Matching of concepts against patterns is a new inference task in Description Logics, which was originally motivated by applications of the CLASSIC system. Consequently, the work on this problem was until now mostly concerned with sublanguages of the Classic language, which does not allow for existential restrictions. Motivated by an application in chemical process engineering, which requires a description language with existential restrictions, this paper investigates the matching problem in Description Logics with existential restrictions. It turns out that existential restrictions make matching more complex in two respects. First, whereas matching in sublanguages of CLASSIC is polynomial, deciding the existence of matchers is an NP-complete problem in the presence of existential restrictions. Second, whereas in sublanguages of Classic solvable matching problems have a unique least matcher, this is not the case for languages with existential restrictions. Thus, it is not a priori clear which of the (possibly infinitely many) matchers should be returned by a matching algorithm. After determining the complexity of the decision problem, the present paper first investigates the question of what are 'interesting' sets of matchers, and then describes algorithms for computing these sets for the languages EL (which allows for conjunction and existential restrictions) and ALE (which additionally allows for value restrictions, primitive negation, and the bottom concept).

Streszczenie:
The research problem. Understanding of insect reproduction has been critical to the design of insect pest control strategies including disruptions of mate-finding, courtship and sperm transfer by male insects. It is well known that males transfer proteins to females during mating that profoundly affect female reproductive physiology, but little is known about the molecular basis of female mating response and no attempts have yet been made to interfere with female post-mating responses that directly bear on the efficacy of fertilization. The female reproductive tract provides a crucial environment for the events of fertilization yet thus far those events and the role of the female tract in influencing them are poorly understood. For this project, we have chosen to focus on the lower reproductive tract because it is the site of two processes critical to reproduction: sperm management (storage, maintenance, and release from storage) and fertilization. E,fforts during this project period centered on the elucidation of mating responses in the female lower reproductive tract The central goals of this project were: 1. To identify mating-responsive genes in the female lower reproductive tract using DNA microarray technology. 2. In parallel, to identify mating-responsive genes in these tissues using proteomic assays (2D gels and LC-MS/MS techniques). 3. To integrate proteomic and genomic analyses of reproductive tract gene expression to identify significant genes for functional analysis. Our main achievements were: 1. Identification of mating-responsive genes in the female lower reproductive tract. We identified 539 mating-responsive genes using genomic and proteomic approaches. This analysis revealed a shift from gene silencing to gene activation soon after mating and a peak in differential gene expression at 6 hours post-mating. In addition, comparison of the two datasets revealed an expression pattern consistent with the model that important reproductive proteins are pre-programmed for synthesis prior to mating. This work was published in Mack et al. (2006). Validation experiments using real-time PCR techniques suggest that microarray assays provide a conservativestimate of the true transcriptional activity in reproductive tissues. 2.lntegration of proteomics and genomics data sets. We compared the expression profiles from DNA microarray data with the proteins identified in our proteomic experiments. Although comparing the two data sets poses analyical challenges, it provides a more complete view of gene expression as well as insights into how specific genes may be regulated. This work was published in Mack et al. (2006). 3. Development of primary reproductive tract cell cultures. We developed primary cell cultures of dispersed reproductive tract cell types and determined conditions for organ culture of the entire reproductive tract. This work will allow us to rapidly screen mating-responsive genes for a variety of reproductive-tract specifi c functions. Scientific and agricultural significance. Together, these studies have defined the genetic response to mating in a part of the female reproductive tract that is critical for successful fertllization and have identified alarge set of mating-responsive genes. This work is the first to combine both genomic and proteomic approaches in determining female mating response in these tissues and has provided important insights into insect reproductive behavior.

Pipeline personnel are routinely asked to evaluate whether excavated corrosion features are active or inactive. To date, no industry guidance has been developed that can be referenced by field personnel when making this assessment. It is recognized that many factors can influence a corrosion status evaluation and that no method, procedure, or process will provide 100% accuracy. The objective of the project was to build a technically defensible set of methods and procedures to classify corrosion features by anomaly type and status as active, inactive or cannot be determined, based on visual inspection and relatively simple field tools and equipment. Such procedures will bring consistency to the industry and will greatly benefit efforts to establish re-assessment intervals and improve preventive and mitigative measures based on technical procedures. A field manual that will help field personnel identify different types of corrosion scenarios has been developed.

This paper presents the framework and methodology for the economic valuation of the knowledge-based economy in five Latin American (LA) countries, namely Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru and the Dominican Republic, for which a new database (IDB-Ivie, 2020) has recently been released. It uses an alternative approach to measuring the knowledge intensity of economies as to those based on the aggregation of industries according to selected indicators such as research and development (R&D) expenditure or labor force skills. Instead, we follow an economic approach rooted in the growth accounting methodology, determining the contribution of each individual factor of production (capital and labor) according to the prices of the services it provides. This methodology will be applied to the above-mentioned LA countries, and to the United States and Spain, which are used as benchmarks. Data are available for the period 1995-2016.

Grumet, Rebecca, Rafael Perl-Treves i Jack Staub. Ethylene Mediated Regulation of Cucumis Reproduction - from Sex Expression to Fruit Set. United States Department of Agriculture, luty 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2010.7696533.bard.

Streszczenie:
Reproductive development is a critical determinant of agricultural yield. For species with unisexual flowers, floral secualdifferentation adds additional complexity, that can influenec productivity. The hormone ethylene has long, been known to play a primary role in sex determination in the Cucumis species cucumber (C. sativus) and melon (C. melo). Our objectives were to: (1) Determine critical sites of ethylene production and perception for sex determination; (2) Identify additional ethylene related genes associated with sex expression; and (3) Examine the role of environment ami prior fruit set on sex expression, pistillate flower maturation, and fruit set. We made progress in each of these areas. (1) Transgenic melon produced with the Arabidopsis dominant negative ethylene perception mutant gene, etrl-1, under the control of floral primordia targeted promoters [AP3 (petal and stamen) and CRC (carpel and nectary)], showed that ethylene perception by the stamen primordia, rather than carpel primordia, is critical for carpel development at the time of sex determination. Transgenic melons also were produced with the ethylene production enzyme gene. ACS, encoding l-aminocyclopropane-lcarboylate synthase, fused to the AP3 or CRC promoters. Consistent with the etr1-1 results, CRC::ACS did not increase femaleness; however, AP3::ACS reduced or eliminated male flower production. The effects of AP3:ACS were stronger than those of 35S::ACS plants, demonstratin g the importance of targeted expression, while avoiding disadvantages of constitutive ethylene production. (2) Linkage analysis coupled with SNP discovery was per formed on ethylene and floral development genes in cucumber populations segregating for the three major sex genes. A break-through towards cloning the cucumber M gene occurred when the melon andromonoecious gene (a), an ACS gene, was cloned in 2008. Both cucumber M and melon a suppress stamen development in pistillate flowers. We hypothesized that cucumber M could be orthologous to melon a, and found that mutations in CsACS2 co-segregated perfectly with the M gene. We also sought to identify miRNA molecules associated with sex determination. miRNA159, whose target in Arabidopsis is GAMYB[a transcription factor gene mediating response to10 gibberellin (GA)], was more highly expressed in young female buds than male. Since GA promotes maleness in cucumber, a micro RNA that counteracts GAMYB could promote femaleness. miRNA157, which in other plants targets transcription factors involved in flower development , was expressed in young male buds and mature flower anthers. (3) Gene expression profiling showed that ethylene-, senescence-, stress- and ubiquitin-related genes were up-regulated in senescing and inhibited fruits, while those undergoing successful fruit set up-regulated photosynthesis, respiration and metabolic genes. Melon plants can change sex expression in response to environmental conditions, leading to changes in yield potential. Unique melon lines with varying sex expression were developed and evaluated in the field in Hancock, Wisconsin . Environmental changes during the growing season influenced sex expression in highly inbred melon lines. Collectively these results are of significance for understanding regulation of sex expression. The fact that both cucumber sex loci identified so far (F and M) encode isoforms of the same ethylene synthesis enzyme, underscores the importance of ethylene as the main sex determining hormone in cucumber. The targeting studies give insight into developmental switch points and suggest a means to develop lines with earlier carpel-bearing flower production and fruit set. These results are of significance for understanding regulation of sex expression to facilitate shorter growing seasons and earlier time to market. Field results provide information for development of management strategies for commercial production of melon cultivars with different sex expression characteristics during fruit production.

Streszczenie:
A study of the remaining rotor life of gas turbines (or combustion turbines) used in the oil and gas industry was performed by Gas Turbine Materials Associates (GTMA). The study focused upon analytical methods of determining the remaining rotor life using a reduced data set, where not all of the operating data is known. As part of this study, a survey of oil and gas users was performed on their rotor life. An analytical model and methodology for determining the remaining rotor life was developed. This model and methodology was applied to the GE MS5002 gas turbine. By using this model for a PRCI member, the life of a rotor was safely extended for 100,000 hours beyond its design life. GTMA estimated that this PRCI member saved approximately $1,000,000 from this one application, and that repeated applications of the model for this, and other, PRCI members would save well over $10,000,000. The results of this work should also be applicable to other gas turbines, including those used by electric utilities, IPPs, and other industrial operators.
