Streszczenie:
A new relationship between product designers and the users of products is emerging. It is now being realised that users have complex supra-functional needs, which include the emotional, spiritual, social, tribal aspects of the relationship between particular products and the user/consumer'. Users seek more than mere functionality. In order to meet these needs designers need to actively develop research methodologies that are specifically aimed at collecting design relevant data which includes the often difficult to grasp elements of the supra-functional. The comfort zone for many designers involves designing products for themselves (or people like themselves) when intuition and insight can be closely matched. In modern, international markets and with increasingly demanding consumers, such approaches are inadequate. However, it is possible for designers to become directly immersed in researching users' needs and experiences rather than rely on third party research which, whilst potentially valuable, does not enable the same intimacy and potential for growth of experience for the designer. This approach is termed empathic design research. It seeks to broaden designers' 'comfort zone' by expanding the number of people they can empathise with, broadening their 'empathic horizon'. This thesis presents a body of published work by the author that explores the position of design research in relation to the changing role of Industrial/Product designers. The thesis consists of an introductory paper that pulls together the various strands in the published work. Following this a set of ten journal papers, one refereed conference paper and three book chapters is presented. The work as a whole defines a number of research approaches that designers can employ to elicit and understand users' suprafunctional needs. The papers establish the evolving context of product design and the growing interest in User-centred Design in its various forms. They examine research approaches that extend beyond user observation, involvement and draw the designer into a more empathic contact with users to illuminate functional and supra-functional requirements. Designers must learn to 'get under the skin' of the user; to develop empathy with users from population groups very different from their own in terms of culture, age and ability. This empathic intimacy can result in data generation and insight with this evaluation becoming an integral part of the designing process. The changing role of the product designer, as well as the nature of the design research process, frames the argument for adopting an empathic design research model. Finally, the author explores the implications of this important paradigm shift for design education.

Streszczenie:
Research by design refers to the design of architectural research as an integral part of architectural design processes. In 1980s, it emerged as a third way in design research that was dominated until then by the methods of natural sciences and humanities. With this new formulation of design research, a methodological and epistemological transformation occurs, leading to the integration of practical knowledge into architectural research. The primary epistemological question transforms from knowing what design is and knowing how to design to knowing what through the act of design. The integration of the act of design in research transforms the status of design in design research from being an object of inquiry to being a research approach. In the literature on research by design, this transformation is often related with Donald Schö
n&rsquo
s conceptualization of &ldquo
reflective practice.&rdquo
The main discussion of reflective practice is primarily methodological rather than epistemological. Although it provides methodological insights, it is not sufficient to constitute an epistemological basis for research by design. Thus, the epistemological basis of research by design has not yet been adequately defined. In this study, the notion of &ldquo
reflective practice&rdquo
is investigated in a broader context relating it to its sources in the concepts of &ldquo
tacit knowledge&rdquo
and &ldquo
action research.&rdquo
A conceptual framework for research by design is constructed by relating these concepts with the discussions on research by design and with practical philosophy, the implications of which has remained rather uninvestigated in this context. Aristotle&rsquo
s elaboration of knowledge generation in action and the concept of phron&
#275
sis (practical knowledge, prudence, or practical wisdom) constitute the underpinning of this conceptual framework. The conceptual framework that is constructed on the basis of the key concepts in practical philosophy is discussed in the context of architectural design education. When architectural design education is formulated as a process of research by design within this framework, knowledge generated in the educational design processes promises not only to improve the particular educational context and architectural education but eventually to contribute to architectural knowledge.

Streszczenie:
Recent work using low-doses of ionising radiations, both in vitro and in ViVO, has suggested that the responses of biological systems in the region of less than 1 Gray may not be predicted by simple extrapolation from the responses at higher doses. Additional experiments, using high-LET radiations at doses of much less than one alpha particle traversal per cell nucleus, have shown responses in a greater number of cells than have received a radiation dose. These findings, and increased concern over the effects of the exposure of the general population to low-levels of background radiation, for example due to radon daughters in the lungs, have stimulated the investigation of the response of mammalian cells to ionising radiations in the extreme low-dose region. In all broad field exposures to particulate radiations at low-dose levels an inherent dose uncertainty exists due to random counting statistics. This dose variation produces a range of values for the measured biological effect within the irradiated population, therefore making the elucidation of the dose-effect relationship extremely difficult. The use of the microbeam irradiation technique will allow the delivery of a controlled number of particles to specific targets within an individual cell with a high degree of accuracy. This approach will considerably reduce the level of variation of biological effect within the irradiated cell population and will allow low-dose responses of cellular systems to be determined. In addition, the proposed high spatial resolution of the microbeam developed will allow the investigation of the distribution of radiation sensitivity within the cell, to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of radiation action. The target parameters for the microbeam at the Gray Laboratory are a spatial resolution of less than 1 urn and a detection efficiency of better than 99 %. The work of this thesis was to develop a method of collimation, in order to produce a microbeam of 3.5 MeV protons, and to develop a detector to be used in conjunction with the collimation system. In order to determine the optimum design of collimator necessary to produce a proton microbeam, a computer simulation based upon a Monte-Carlo simulation code, written by Dr S J Watts, was developed. This programme was then used to determine the optimum collimator length and the effects of misalignment and divergence of the incident proton beam upon the quality of the collimated beam produced. Designs for silicon collimators were produced, based upon the results of these simulations, and collimators were subsequently produced for us using techniques of micro-manufacturing developed in the semiconductor industry. Other collimator designs were also produced both in-house and commercially, using a range of materials. These collimators were tested to determine both the energy and spatial resolutions of the transmitted proton beam produced. The best results were obtained using 1.6 mm lengths of 1.5 µm diameter bore fused silica tubing. This system produced a collimated beam having a spatial resolution with 90 % of the transmitted beam lying within a diameter of 2.3 ± 0.9 µm and with an energy spectrum having 75 % of the transmitted protons within a Gaussian fit to the full-energy peak. Detection of the transmitted protons was achieved by the use of a scintillation transmission detector mounted over the exit aperture of the collimator. An approximately 10 urn thick ZnS(Ag) crystal was mounted between two 30 urn diameter optical fibres and the light emitted from the crystal transmitted along the fibres to two photomultiplier tubes. The signals from the tubes were analyzed, using coincidence counting techniques, by means of electronics designed by Dr B Vojnovic. The lowest counting inefficiencies obtained using this approach were a false positive count level of 0.8 ± 0.1 % and an uncounted proton level of 0.9 ± 0.3 %. The elements of collimation and detection were then combined in a rugged microbeam assembly, using a fused silica collimator having a bore diameter of 5 urn and a scintillator crystal having a thickness of - 15 µm. The microbeam produced by this initial assembly had a spatial resolution with 90 % of the transmitted protons lying within a diameter of 5.8 ± 1.6 µm, and counting inefficiencies of 0.27 ± 0.22 % and 1.7 ± 0.4 % for the levels of false positive and missed counts respectively. The detector system in this assembly achieves the design parameter of 99 % efficiency, however, the spatial resolution of the beam is not at the desired I urn level. The diameter of the microbeam beam produced is less than the nuclear diameter of many cell lines and so the beam may be used to good effect in the low-dose irradiation of single cells. In order to investigate the variation in sensitivity within a cell the spatial resolution of the beam would require improvement. Proposed methods by which this may be achieved are described.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is about defining participation in the context of fostering research cohesion in the field of Participatory Design. The systematic and incremental building of new knowledge is the process by which science and research is advanced. This process requires a certain type of cohesion in the way research is undertaken for new knowledge to be built from the knowledge provided by previous projects and research. To support this process and to foster research cohesion three conditions are necessary. These conditions are: common ground between practitioners, problem-space positioning, and adherence to clear research criteria. The challenge of fostering research cohesion in Participatory Design is apparent in at least four themes raised in the literature: the role of politics within Participatory Design epistemology, the role of participation, design with users, and the ability to translate theory into practice. These four thematic challenges frame the context which the research gap is situated. These themes are also further investigated and the research gap – a general lack of research cohesion – along with one avenue for addressing this gap – a clear and operationalizable definition for participation – are identified. The intended contribution of this thesis is to develop a framework and visual tool to address this research gap. In particular, an initial approximation for a clear and operationalizable definition for participation will be proposed such that it can be used within the field of Participatory Design to run projects and foster research cohesion. In pursuit of this contribution, a critical lens is developed and used to analyse some of the principles and practices of Participatory Design that are regarded as foundational. This lens addresses how to define participation in a way that adheres to basic principles of scientific rigour – namely, ensuring that the elements of a theory are operationalizable, falsifiable, generalizable, and useful, and it also treats participation as a construct rather than treating the notion of participation as a variable. A systematic analysis is performed using this lens on the principles and practices that are considered foundational within the field. From this analysis, three components of the participation construct – impact, influence, and agency – are identified. These components are then broken down into two constituent variables each (six in all) and represented visually. Impact is described as the relationship between the quality and use of information. Influence is described as the relationship between the amount and scope of decision making. Agency is described as the relationship between the motivation of the participant and the solidarity of the group. Thus, as a construct, participation is described as the relationship between a participant’s impact, influence, and agency. In the concluding section, the value of this participation construct is explored for its utility in enhancing project work and fostering research cohesion. Three items of potential value that emerge are: the creation of a visual tool through the representation of these six constituent variables in one image; the elaboration of a common language for researchers based on the six constituent variables identified; and the ability to systematically identify and remedy participation gaps throughout the life of the project. While future research exploring the applicability of the participation construct in real world projects is necessary, it is intended that this initial approximation of a participation construct in the form of the visual tool will serve as the basis for a cohesive and rigorous discussion about participation in Participatory Design.

Recent demand for applied knowledge within architectural practice has resulted in the proliferation of university based research groups. Given the role advanced degree programs play in educating architectural researchers, an opportunity exists to educate architects towards bridging the traditional gap between practice and academia, as well as addressing the dichotomy of research and teaching within the university. Traditionally, research methods from other disciplines are taught in an attempt to redress the research deficiencies of a professional education. This investigation begins with a different premise: the operations of design, central to an architect's intellectual and operational repertoire, should be the catalyst for developing research methods specific to architecture. Further, these methods should be accompanied by a knowledge base which expresses the operations of design. A modified educational paradigm consisting of methods, knowledge, and the building of abilities through 'thoughtful performances', structures an experimental curriculum. Each attribute becomes a dimension for substantiation and assessment. Student engagement and entanglement within this locus reveals the potential directions of design research education. The subsequent analyses of the student work indicates four major trends: Intersubjectivity the need for common understanding; Transparency- the effortless application of methods, Emergence- acknowledgment of form's evolution; and Apprentissage- French for learning which occurs from within apprenticeship. Given these attributes, and the subsequent imperative to redefine architectural research, we formulate a paradigmatic architectural researcher, the "Architect Scholar' and speculate on an educational program designed to foster these characteristics within students.

Streszczenie:
To learn the uncertainty of customer preference on the attribute of new product, usually a firm needs to do market research. Developing a product on an attribute which is less preferred by customer may lead to a failure. In addition, a firm used to take efforts to design the product. In recent years, we observed a new business model in which the firm does not take effort to design new product, nor does she do market research by herself. She provides rewards to attract outside designers to design new product. Some designers may take effort and design products based on their private information of customer preference. The firm receives designs with different quality and attribute, she chooses one to produce. By solving this game model, we get the equilibrium quality of the design offered by each designer based on their private cost parameter. And we obtain the following insights: When the market size is too small, the firm gives nothing to designers; when the market size is sufficiently big, the firm only gives reward to the designer whose design is produced; otherwise the firm gives both rewards to participated designers and the designer whose design is produced. We find that when the market size is big enough or the disutility is high enough, the new business model dominates the benchmark business model. When both the disutility and market size are small enough, the firm prefers the benchmark business model. And the relative attractiveness of new business model versus benchmark model keeps the same when the market size is small enough. The impact of extra reward on relative attractiveness of new business model versus benchmark model increases with extra reward. When the extra reward is high enough, the firm always prefers the new business model.

Streszczenie:
The issue of design quality in construction projects has long been a major concern for designprofessionals (Gann et al. 2003). The emphasis on improvement of processes in constructionin order to manage or reduce “cost, time and waste” in projects, at times has led to concernsthat the design of a building could become a matter of less importance due to such processimproving measures (Gann et al. 2003, p.319) “Design Quality” in architecture andconstruction is an ambiguous and “dynamic concept” in relation to its context, continuouslygoing through changes (Rönn 2010, p.48; Slaughter 2004).Quality itself is related to value and multiple definitions of it (Rönn 2010). It is often possiblefor both people and professionals to feel and experience design quality in buildings ratherintuitively, but to frame it in a recognizable manner has always proved challenging (Rönn2010). Essentially, human behavior apart from being influenced by the physical environmentis also influenced by the social context existing within the physical environment (Vischer2008).These challenges further extend to judgement, assessment and measurement of design quality, and setting out the relevant criteria for them (Rönn 2010, Slaughter 2004). Therefore, it’sdifficult for building designers, to structure design solutions that could guarantee theachievement of such ambiguous concept (Rönn 2010).

To ensure that research is recognized as potentially relevant and solid, by both academic field and society in general, it must demonstrate that it was developed with rigor and is liable to debate and verification. It is in this context that a robust research method becomes essential to successfully conduct a study. This study seeks to contribute with the Production Engineering community debating the need to adopt a method of research focused on the evolution of Design Science, showing its meaning and its ways of operation. For this study was used an approach based on theoretical and conceptual extensive literature review. From the literature review, was possible to assert that the concepts associated with the proposed methodological research on Design Science are relevant and applicable to Production Engineering. This dissertation presents a conceptual history about the Design Science and Design Science Research, the importance of defining the Classes of Problems and Artifacts generated from a research, and key steps to operationalize the Design Science Research. To deepen the understanding of the staff concerned, this study also proposes comparisons and analyzes on the Design Science and its relationship with the traditional sciences. Finally, the study discusses some attenttion points for the use and validation of Design Science Research.

Streszczenie:
Designers often look for inspiration in their environment when exploring possible solutions to a given problem. However, many studies have reported that external stimuli may constrain designers’ imagination and limit their exploration to similar solutions, a phenomenon described as design fixation. Inspiration and fixation effects are traditionally studied with a similar experimental paradigm, which has produced a complex web of findings and explanations. Yet, when analysing the experiments and their findings closely, it becomes clear that there is considerable variation in how studies are conducted and the results they produce. Such variation makes it difficult to formulate a general view of how external stimuli affect the design process, and to translate the research findings into education and practice. Moreover, it raises questions about the reliability and effectiveness of the traditional experimental method. This thesis reports on a collection of studies that examine how design inspiration and fixation research is done and how it can be improved. It explores the research area by reviewing the literature and analysing data from a workshop; describes the research method by scrutinising experiments and their procedures; and explains the variation in research findings by testing experimental procedures empirically and suggesting new interpretations. My main findings are that: abstract stimuli can inspire or fixate designers to different degrees depending on how explicitly the stimuli are represented; external stimuli can inhibit the exploration of ideas that would otherwise be explored; the effect of experimental instructions varies depending on how encouraging the instructions are; and the way participants represent and elaborate ideas can moderate fixation results. Whilst this thesis offers insights into design practice and education, its main contribution is to design research, where it represents a fundamental material for those who are new to inspiration and fixation research, and for those who are already expert.

Streszczenie:

This dissertation presents a case study of collaborative research through design with Floracaching, a gamified mobile application for citizen science biodiversity data collection. One contribution of this study is the articulation of collaborative research through design (CRtD), an approach that blends cooperative design approaches with the research through design methodology (RtD). Collaborative research through design is thus defined as an iterative process of cooperative design, where the collaborative vision of an ideal state is embedded in a design. Applying collaborative research through design with Floracaching illustrates how a number of cooperative techniques—especially contextual inquiry, prototyping, and focus groups—may be applied in a research through design setting. Four suggestions for collaborative research through design (recruit from a range of relevant backgrounds; take flexibility as a goal; enable independence and agency; and, choose techniques that support agreement or consensus) are offered to help others who wish to experiment with this new approach. Applying collaborative research through design to Floracaching yielded a new prototype of the application, accompanied by design annotations in the form of framing constructs for designing to support mobile, place-based citizen science activities. The prototype and framing constructs, which may inform other designers of similar citizen science technologies, are a second contribution of this research.

Designers take inspiration about the future in order to shape values for their design practice, especially whennew technologies are involved. Participatory design fiction is an approach that enables designers to reflectupon futures are created by non-designers. These narratives about technologies that come from nondesignersare valuable for designers in the industry as inspirational material. Nonetheless, the distancebetween the academic research and designers in the industry makes difficult the spreading of design fictionsproduced by non-designers.This thesis project explore the following: How might we design a digital infrastructure that integrates the enduser's imaginaries about new technologies as inspiration and material for reflection in the design industrypractice? As well as: How might we enable the design research community to share results of their participatory designfiction experiments with the design industry in ways that benefit both parts?I will present an investigation in the relations between the academic design researchers and the designpractitioners by the means of co-design workshops, interviews, virtual ethnography and iterative prototyping. The outcome is an infrastructure which takes advantage of the existing practices of the design community onTwitter. By investigating these social media dynamics, I intent to create a bridge between academia anddesign industry for enabling critical inspiration from participatory design fiction outcomes. The final prototypeis a Twitter account run by a bot which enables an autonomous collection of design fictions from nondesignersshared on Twitter by design researchers with designers from the industry.

Streszczenie:
The number of research for design methods is increasing every year, but existing literature reveals very little about the state of research in communication design in the South African context. It is not clear whether practitioners are implementing the methods, whether the methods are suitable to the South African context, or even whether practitioners are aware of the methods in the first place. This study is exploratory in nature and investigates three aspects of communication design practitioners’ relationship with current research for design methods: awareness, attitudes and aptitude. These three aspects are collectively referred to as ‘conversance’. The study briefly covers the etymology of research for design and the literature that is currently available from the South African industry. The literature review for the study is divided into two sections, the first investigating what research is and what constitutes acceptable scholarly research practices. The second part of the literature review establishes what the state of the art in research for design is and gives some idea of what good research for design practices look like, in the broader context of acceptable scholarly research practices. Four heterogeneous case companies are investigated in terms of their conversance with research for design methods, using a mixed methods embedded design. The field research data for these case studies is discussed separately, whereafter a cross-case analysis is conducted, to help guide the lines of inquiry in future research projects investigating research practices in the South African communication design industry. The study ends by making recommendations for further research, based on the outcomes.

Streszczenie:
Since the early 2000s, within the fields of Design and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) an emerging body of unconventional design work has exemplified and articulated alternative and oppositional functions of design. Examples of such functions include provocatively speculating about alternative futures (speculation), questioning the status quo (critique), and debating political issues (agonism). Prominent examples of alternative and oppositional design have originated within HCI. Others have been heavily discussed, adapted, and critiqued within HCI. Alternative and oppositional designs have been presented under various names: critical design, design fiction, adversarial design, reflective design, ludic design, speculative design… At this moment the list continues to grow while examples of such work proliferate. This work collectively demonstrates the potential for design to engage concerns and goals that pivot around themes of generating radical alternatives and creating productive political, cultural, and social opposition. This thesis argues that there is a body of unconventional design work that becomes cohesive and legible when held together by themes of oppositionality and alternatives, and operating throughout these designs is a technique which I term design resistance. This thesis presents two primary contributions. The first contribution is to isolate and elaborate resistance as a design technique at work across a range of alternative and oppositional designs. I articulate how design resistance works by analyzing a series of design exemplars drawn from HCI and adjacent areas of Design. The second contribution is to extend and refine the overarching technique of design resistance through two design case studies. These design case studies serve the dual function of offering additional insight into design resistance grounded in my own design practice while concretely demonstrating new knowledge relevant to specific domains and concerns within HCI, including sustainable energy consumption and critiques of digital consumer technologies. Together these contributions provide new knowledge for (1) understanding the rise of alternative and oppositional designs, the concerns they are working to engage, and the research gaps they are working to fill, and (2) how to practice alternative and oppositional forms of design using techniques of design resistance.

The main topics of illumination industry are the materials of light sources (incandescent, fluorescent lamp and LED, etc.), geometric shapes of lamps (parabola, ellipse, hyperbola, etc.), light guide and light tracing (direct illumination, indirect illumination, diffuse illumination, etc.). Light curve distributions differ for various LED usages, and LED product always need some auxiliary optical elements to modify light distribution for the lighting purpose, which is named secondary optical elements, such as reflectors, lens, fresnell etc. This research explores the relationship between optical reflector and LED light curve distribution, which constructs the rules for illumination design. Geometric and energetic model for design LED source reflectors were surveyed. First, the study includes LED emitting angular to find reflector open diameter and illuminating area. Reflectors of parabolic and hyperbolic shape models with different cut-off angles were created, and simulations of luminous flux, illuminance, luminous intensity distribution and light distribution were made by optical software. Finally, a better design was made and the LED sample was made for verification.

Transit map is a highly generalized thematic map, which presents route information in a simple and clear way. Transit map had been produced for more than a century, few academic research were focused on the design in a scientific approach. Based on the theory of map cognitive, communication and design, this research propose two important aims for transit map design, and also its main design factors. The two important aims are to establish spatial structure, and provide clear service information. Under the framework, this research analyzed a total of 181 metropolises. This research also selects three complicated transit maps. Through discussion of their systems' development and the design changes over a long period of time, this research hopes to gain a deeper understanding on these maps. London Underground, the first subway system in the world, developed topological transit maps. New York City Subway, the world largest subway system, presents a special case that it abandon topological map and design the map on a real space basis. Tokyo, as the world most populated metropolis, has unique characteristics such as the use of Chinese character, and multi-track system with cross-company operation. With analysis of these examples, the research will gain a deeper understanding of the transit map design. Through theories study and case analysis, this research propose a set of rules for transit map design, which would provide its users with clear and convenience information. This research also look into how these rules implement on Taipei's MRT system.

The purpose of this study is to design the tin can processing method, and to reduce the labor and also the processing time. In response to the automated operation, it will be updated for feeding, forming, and cutting. The design of the die will be incorporated into the forming and forming process. The automatic design method of the feeding will be matched so that the target of rapid processing and molding can be completed by one-time molding and cutting. Since the thin iron plate must be cut and then subjected to the feeding operation when it is being processed, an entire thin iron plate is first cut into strips of long thin iron plate. In order to speed up the processing speed, the automatic feeding method is changed from the single-axis feeding mode to the biaxial feeding mode to reduce the number of processing passes that the thin iron plate must be trimmed before being processed. Saving man-hours can also avoid handling safety problems during cutting and processing. This reduces the production cost and enhance the company's research. We try to improve development capabilities and to develop faster feeds by the way of the two-axis feed to improve original one-way feed. This makes it possible to achieve faster processing efficiency.

Comfortable ambient lighting, in addition to providing the basic needs of our daily lives, provides an efficient, safe and energy-efficient visual environment. Among all the factors affecting the quality of lighting, the most important factor is the light distribution curve characteristics of the lighting fixture. The light distribution curve and the light distribution data are very important for the lighting design. Lamp manufacturers should provide customers with light distribution or light distribution data for light sources or lamps, but many manufacturers do not have equipment similar to the light curve meter. Because a set of instruments is expensive and requires a large test space, the average company is not willing to buy, but for measuring light distribution data, the light curve meter is a must. For the purpose of designing a goniophotometer, this study compares the design of several mechanical structures with the current distribution of goniophotometers and improves the shortcomings of commercially available goniophotometers. In the adjustment of the luminosity center of the luminaire, a rotating mechanism that can adjust the angle is used to solve the problem, which not only improves the accuracy of the measurement, but also greatly reduces the time required for the luminaire to perform the light distribution measurement. Finally, in the measurement distance of the goniophotometer, this paper also proposes a method to shorten the measurement distance, which reduces the measurement distance, in addition to solving the space for the factory equipment, and the difference between the measurement distance data for shortening. Very little. The goniophotometer designed in this paper cooperates with the method of shortening the measurement distance to develop a space-saving cost-setting curve meter, which improves the technical level of the optical measurement system and greatly helps the domestic measurement industry.

This study mainly aims at products related to bicycles and their associated accessories with LOHAS cognitions. Owing to LOHAS, the bicycle cycling activity becomes popular again as it is environment-friendly and body-healthful. Therefore, the pleasure of cycling will be strengthened for bicyclers if it improves the sensation about physiology, psychology and spirit. And how to make cycling be a long term activity in one''s life is the key issue in this research. The research methods include the following steps. (1) Category 12 items of requirements after collecting LOHAS cognitions of subjects and requirements of bicycle activities by participant observations, interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, references and blogs of bicycler. (2) AIO (Activity, Interest, and Opinion) questionnaire is extracted from the context of requirements and is used for lifestyle measurement. Through the methods of factor analysis and cluster analysis, the cycling members can be classified into 5 groups, i.e. the life-enjoying group, the carbon-reduction fulfilling group, the performance-volunteering group, the cycling-pleasing group, and the leisure-implementing group, respectively. (3) The cycling-pleasing group is finally selected as the objective design subject through cluster analysis. By using the brainstorming design method, new design concepts were come out and further refined through the focus group interview and the brains trust check. (4) Establish “LohasShip” as the final confirmed product by experts check again and make the prototype. The concept of LohasShip will increase interaction for bicyclers and foster interest for children in biking to achieve the sustainable ideal. And the parent-child relationship of biking is the chief consideration of this design. To appropriately adopt the user’s opinions and expert’s suggestions made the design achieve better acceptance. Furthermore, the research methods used or proposed in the investigation may help the design activities for bicycle-related products.

Most of the previously published negative-differential-resistance circuits (NDR) are implemented by the resonant tunneling diode (RTD). These devices and circuits are Ⅲ-Ⅴ compound semiconductors, which are not compatible with the main stream of Si-based CMOS or SiGe-based BiCMOS process. In this thesis, We propose three new types NDR circuits, which are MOS-HBT-NDR, MOS-NDR and R-HBT-NDR. These NDR circuits not only have fold feature but also high modulation in I-V characteristic. However, these NDR circuit is completed of the Si-based MOS and SiGe-based HBT devices, it is convenient to combine with other devices and circuits to achieve the system-on a-chip (SoC). Compared to the traditional RTD-based multiple-peak circuit, our novel two-peak MOS-HBT-NDR owns high and adjustable PVCR characteristic. These phenomena provide flexible applications in multiple-valued memory design. We have demonstrated several methods to output the logic levels as we need. We have fabricated the MOS-NDR circuits based on the standard 0.35 慆 CMOS process. We also have demonstrated the Multi-Function logic gate based on the MOS-NDR circuits. This circuit of logic gate design is operated according to the principle of MOBILE theory. We have proposed a novel frequency divider using an NDR-based chaos circuit. This chaos circuit is based on the strong nonlinearity of an R-HBT-NDR circuit. We have researched the operation of the frequency divider circuit with respect to the input frequency, the bias voltage, input amplitude, and various input waveforms on the operation. A higher operation frequency is expected for this type of frequency divider.

A large set of inspection data has been generated and stored in a medical LIS (Libratory Information System), which would help doctors do researches in diagnosis so that the emergence of diseases would be prevented. In Taiwan, most of medical systems do not have a common code system, which causes difficulties in transmitting among medical computing systems either within a medical firm or in-between different medical firms. It is LOINC (Logical Observation Identifier Names and Codes) coding system which is a standard code commonly used in most of large medical firms in the States. By using LOINC, the work flow of data exchanging becomes more efficient. In this thesis, a system is designed for local medical firms to map and transform their existing data set into a LOINC compliant set. We attempt to provide a systematic and automatic system that helps local medical firms have a common code system for communication

The goal of this thesis is to design and fabricate a four degrees freedom underwater manipulator for small to midsize remotely operated vehicles. DC servo motors were used to actuate the manipulator joints such that the size and the necessary auxiliary components can be reduced. In terms of hardware design process, the selection of servo motors and their arrangement is the key to the overall performance of the manipulator. The design of any joint, including its location and fixture to the frame, is coupled with that of the neighboring joints such that the design itself is an iterative process. Proper choice of the torque and power of an actuator not only reduces its size but also ease the loading the joints proximal to the base. In this project, the water resistance between stationary and rotary interfaces are achieved by O-ring and mechanical seals respectively. A gripper, synthesized and analyzed with kinematic chain theory, was implemented with a single degree freedom six-bar linkage as the end-effector of the manipulator. Because the robot is designated to operate in underwater environment, the dynamics of the system is relative slow and insignificant. Therefore, the only the linearized kinematics of the manipulator is concerned, and the motion controller is implemented with Jacobian in Visual Basic. Under 50 Hz servo rate, gravity compensation is added for operation in the air, and in the water as well. For the operating speed limited to 20 mm/sec, the overall positioning error is confined to be less than 1 mm for all time.

This study aims to provide a sound knowledge about the motion controller, including the principle, method and procedure. The subjects of the interpreter, cutter compensation, acceleration control, interpolator, are discussed in the thesis. the portion of the interpreter which consists of the linked list stacks, it can simulate the BASIC-Like logical control, language and standard NC program and transforms the original NC program to a program which exclude compensation and cycle code . The interpreter also can expand the NC code, according to the job requirement. The portion of cutter compensation is to use method of coordinate rotation to simplify the procedure of the This will greatly benefit to those who want to calculate the compensation by using the computer design program. For the portion of the acceleration control, interpolator, they provide a simple and feasible manufacturing method and this is benefit to design and manufacture of the motion controller.

Face to the reducing of living area in modern urban environment now, flexible design is a consequential tendency in future house design. That also include Ho Chi Minh City_The rapidly developing city in Vietnam. In the research, we concluded some ways in flexible design by case studing on flexible space and furniture design, and refered to the theory of open building. We attempt to frame a design process for flexible house design. Finally, follow the method and process, we chose a real interior space in Ho Chi Minh City, and design an interior system that is capable of more than 5 variations for user.
