Streszczenie:
To a rapidly increasing degree, traditional organizational structures evolve in large parts of the world towards online business using modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities. For efficient applications of inter-organizational information systems, the alignment between business and ICT is a key factor. In this context, business analysis using business modelling can be regarded as a first step in designing economically sustainable e-business solutions. This thesis examines how business modeling can be used to improve e-business design. We examine how business stakeholder intentions and different objectives of business collaborations can be used to obtain an explorative business model that can be used as a basis for designing e-business solutions. The thesis proposes a set of artifacts for business modeling and e-service design. In regard to business modeling, we propose methods that consider internal aspects such as strategic intentions of actors and external aspects such as business collaborations among them. Considering stakeholder intentions, we introduce a method to design business models based on goal models. A set of templates for designing goal models and a set of transformation rules to obtain business models based on goal models are proposed. To further improve business models considering business collaborations, we suggest a classification of business transactions that considers underlying business objectives of business collaborations. Utilizing the suggested business transactions, we then propose a method to improve business modeling. Finally, we propose a method for designing e-services using business models. The methods suggested support business modelers as well as process and services designers in executing their tasks effectively. The methods have been assessed through applications in two cases.

Streszczenie:
With the widespread use of the Internet and its associated technologies, enterprises have to evolve in the way they are conducting business. 'e-business applications' refer to a new class of distributed applications that involves the Internet as a communication platform. Each e-business application supports the full automation of business processes that can span across multiple enterprises. For a given application domain that involves e-business application development, a number of design decisions that best fullfil stakeholders requirements have to be made. One important issue is the reuse of functionality which exists within legacy systems that can belong to one or more enterprises within the same domain. Most existing design approaches are inadequate in supporting the exploration of all design combinations. Moreover, there is little work on how to identify the best design decisions systematically for a given application domain. In this thesis we present a pattern-based approach that addresses the architectural design of e-business applications. We identify a number of architectural patterns whose instantiation on a given design problem correspond to different architectural design alternatives. We also identify models that enable the estimation of quality attributes for such alternatives. Then we investigate and utilise methods to select the best pattern for a given design problem. We also describe the process of generating the alternative architectures, estimating their qualities, and then ranking them with respect to any quality attribute or a combination of quality attributes. We validate this approach on a real life case study in the area of capital markets. The case study concerns realistic e-business applications that rely on existing legacy applications. The validation exercise has produced predictions which have been compared with actual design decisions that have been made. The thesis also proposes a framework for the systematic identification of architectural patterns. An additional set of architectural patterns and their impact on the case study are discussed. The main contribution of this thesis is in the identification of patterns and quality attributes models for the architectural design of e-business applications that aid in the systematic selection of the most appropriate architectural pattern for a given problem context.

Streszczenie:
Architecting e-business applications is a complex design activity. This is mainly due to the numerous architectural decisions to be made, including the selection of alternative technologies, software components, design strategies, patterns, standards, protocols, platforms, etc. Further complexities arise due to the fact that these alternatives often vary considerably in their support for different quality attributes. Moreover, there are often different groups of stakeholders involved, with each having their own quality goals and criteria. Furthermore, different architectural decisions often include interdependent alternatives, where the selection of one alternative for one particular decision impacts the selections to be made for alternatives from other different decisions. There have been several research efforts aiming at providing sufficient mechanisms and tools for facilitating the architectural evaluation and design process. These approaches, however, address architectural decisions in isolation, where they focus on evaluating a limited set of alternatives belonging to one architectural decision. This has been the primary motivation behind the development of the Architectural DEcision-Making Support (ADEMS) framework, which basically aims at supporting stakeholders and architects during the architectural decision-making process by helping them determining a suitable combination of architectural alternatives. ADEMS framework is an iterative process that leverages rigorous quantitative decision-making techniques available in the literature of Management Science, particularly Multiple Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) methods and Integer Programming (IP). Furthermore, due to the number of architectural decisions involved as well as the variety of available alternatives, the architecture design space is expected to be huge. For this purpose, a query language has been developed, known as the Architecture Query Language (AQL), to aid architects in exploring and analyzing the design space in further depth, and also in examining different ???what-if??? architectural scenarios. In addition, in order to support leveraging ADEMS framework, a support tool has been implemented for carrying out the sophisticated set of mathematical computations and comparisons of the large number of architectural combinations, which might otherwise be hard to conduct using manual techniques. The primary contribution of the tool is in its help to identify, evaluate, and rank all potential combinations of alternatives based on their satisfaction to quality preferences provided by the different stakeholders. Finally, to assess the feasibility of ADEMS, three different case studies have been conducted relating to the architectural evaluation of different e-business and enterprise applications. Results obtained for the three case studies were quite positive as they showed an acceptable accuracy level for the decisions recommended by ADEMS, and at a reasonable time and effort costs for the different system stakeholders.

Mobile web applications refer to web applications on mobile devices, aimed at personalizing, integrating, and discovering mobile contents in user contexts. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of mobile web applications by proposing a new taxonomy for mobile web applications, and conducting a business analysis in the field of mobile web applications. The thesis reviews the current surrounding environment for mobile web applications, namely, web 2.0 and 3.0, wireless communication technology, and Smartphone platform. The recent entry and success of Apple's iPhone greatly enhanced the public awareness of the Smartphone technology. Google's release of open-source Android platform and T-Mobile's deployment of Android-powered "Dream" Smartphone not only intensify the competition among suppliers, but also provide an open-source foundation for mobile web applications. This thesis introduces a new mobile web application taxonomy to systematically study the values and the groupings of the mobile web applications. By introducing features and categories, the taxonomy provides a framework so the related companies and businesses can be comparatively analyzed and summarized. Selected case companies are studied in the light of the taxonomy. The thesis discusses the key issues of mobile web aggregation, namely, mobile application development platform, context modeling, mobile user interface, mobile application logic, and mobile web aggregation strategy.
(cont.) "System Thinking" is applied to the management of mobile web application business. The market ecosystem, the value proposition, and the revenue model for mobile web application are described. The volume of information generated from enterprise applications is growing exponentially, and the cost of storage is decreasing rapidly. In addition, cloud-based applications, mobile devices and social networks are becoming relevant sources of unstructured data that provide essential information for strategic decisions making. Therefore, with time, enterprise databases will become more valuable for business but also much harder to integrate, process and analyze. Business Intelligence software was instrumental in helping organizations to analyze information and provide reports to support business decision-making. Accordingly, BI applications evolved as enterprise information grew, hardware-processing capacities developed, and storage cost is being reduced significantly. In this paper, we will analyze the current BI world market and compare it with the Chilean market, in order to come up with business plan recommendations for local developers and systems integrators interested in capitalizing the opportunities generated by the global BI software market consolidation.

The concept of replacing threads with flexible wires and sensors in a fabric to provide an underlying platform for integrating electronic components is known as e-textiles. This concept can be used to design applications involving different types of electronic components including sensors, digital signal processors, microcontrollers, color-changing fibers, and power sources. The adaptability of the textiles to the needs of the individual and the functionality of electronics can be integrated to provide unobtrusive, robust, and inexpensive clothing with novel features. This thesis focuses on the design of e-textiles for acoustic signal processing applications. This research examines challenges encountered when developing e-textile applications involving distributed arrays of microphones. A framework for designing such applications is presented. The design process and the performance analysis of two e-textiles, a large-scale beamforming fabric and a speech-processing vest, are presented.

With vast improvements in computational power, increased accessibility to big data, and rapid innovations in computing algorithms, the use of neural networks for both engineering and business purposes was met with a renewed interest beginning in early 2000s. Amidst substantial development, the Softplus and Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation functions were introduced in 2000 and 2001 respectively, with the latter emerging as the more popular choice of activation function in neural networks. Notably, the ReLU activation function maintains a high degree of gradient propagation while presenting greater model sparsity and computational efficiency over Softplus. As an alternative to the ReLU, a family of a modified Softplus activation function - the "Smoothing" activation function of the form g(z) = [mu] log(1 + e[superscript z/[mu]) has been proposed. Theoretically, the Smoothing activation function will leverage the high degree of gradient propagation and model simplicity characteristic of the ReLU function, while eliminating possible issues associated with the non-differentiability of ReLU about the origin. In this research, the performance of the Smoothing family of activation functions vis-à-vis the ReLU activation function will be examined.

Streszczenie:
Today a paradigm shift in the field of organisation and management theories is no longer disputed and the need to switch from the Command-and-Control to the Leaming Organisation Paradigm (LOP) in the area of organisational theory is well understood. However, it is less well appreciated that learning organisations cannot operate effectively if supported by centralised databases and tailor-made application programs. LOP emphasises adaptability, flexibility, participation and learning. It is important to understand that the changes in organisational and management strategies will not on their own be able to produce the desired effects unless they are supported by appropriate changes in organisational culture, and by effective information systems. This research demonstrates that conventional information system strategies and development methods are no longer adequate. Information system strategies must respond to these needs of the LOP and incorporate new information systems that are capable of evolving, adapting and responding to the constantly changing business environment. The desired adaptability, flexibility and agility in information systems for LOP can be achieved by exploiting the technologies of the Internet, World Wide Web, intelligent agents and intranets. This research establishes that there is a need for synergy between organisational structures and organisational information systems. To obtain this desired synergy it is essential that new information systems be designed as an integral part of the learning organisational structure itself. Complexity theory provides a new set of metaphors and a host of concepts for the understanding of organisations as complex adaptive systems. This research introduces the principles of Complex Adaptive Systems and draws on their significance for designing the information systems needed to support the new generation of learning organisations. The search for new models of information system strategies for today's dynamic world of business points to the 'swarm models' observed in Nature.

Streszczenie:
Software agents and multi-agent systems (MAS) have grown into a very active area of research and commercial development activity. There are many current emerging real-world applications spanning multitude of diverse domains. In the context of agents, ontology has been widely recognised for their significant benefits to interoperability, reusability, and both development and operational aspects of agent systems and applications. Ontology-based multi-agent systems (OBMAS) exploit these advantages in providing intelligent and semantically aware applications. In addressing the lack of support for ontology in existing methodologies for multi-agent development, this thesis proposes a design methodology for the building of such intelligent multi-agent applications called MOMA. This alternative approach focuses on the development of ontology as the driving force of the development process. By allowing the domain and characteristics of utilisation and experimentation to be dictated through ontology, researchers and domain experts can specify the agent application without any knowledge of agent design and lower level programming. Through the use of a structured ontology model and the use of integrated tools, this approach contributes towards the building of semantically aware intelligent applications for use by researchers and domain experts. MOMA is evaluated through case studies in two different domains: financial services and e-Health.

The primary purpose of this thesis was to design and develop a prototype e-commerce system where dynamic parameters are included in the decision-making process and execution of an online transaction. The system developed and implemented takes into account previous usage history, priority and associated engineering capabilities. The system was developed using three-tiered client server architecture. The interface was the Internet browser. The middle tiered web server was implemented using Active Server Pages, which form a link between the client system and other servers. A relational database management system formed the data component of the three-tiered architecture. It includes a capability for data warehousing which extracts needed information from the stored data of the customers as well as their orders. The system organizes and analyzes the data that is generated during a transaction to formulate a client's behavior model during and after a transaction. This is used for making decisions like pricing, order rescheduling during a client's forthcoming transaction. The system helps among other things to bring about predictability to a transaction execution process, which could be highly desirable in the current competitive scenario.

Streszczenie:
In commerce, user behaviour modelling is an important component of marketing and advertising. Personalization, a widely used feature of e-Commerce systems, is one aspect of such modelling. Current personalization systems require users to register in order to provide their services; and many of the personalization aspects offered are determined by requiring the user to fill extensive forms regarding their preferences. Although there are a few systems that provide automatic personalization, most focus on the link and content personalization only. Work done in user profiling and determining user models for marketing and commerce purposes have little emphasis on user personality; moreover, there has been a growing concern for privacy of information from the ever-growing online community. The objective of this thesis is to provide a model where the personality of the customer is used for personalization. A mechanism is proposed in which personalization does not require registration, the customer personality profile is determined implicitly, and the personalization module is updated dynamically while the customer browses the products. The design, implementation and testing of a bookstore using this model is presented; furthermore the system is coupled with a privacy component to present the concept of privacy-enhanced personalization of web pages.

This artwork reports on two different projects that were carried out during the three years of Doctor of the Philosophy course. In the first years a project regarding Capacitive Pressure Sensors Array for Aerodynamic Applications was developed in the Applied Aerodynamic research team of the Second Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna, Forlì, Italy, and in collaboration with the ARCES laboratories of the same university. Capacitive pressure sensors were designed and fabricated, investigating theoretically and experimentally the sensor’s mechanical and electrical behaviours by means of finite elements method simulations and by means of wind tunnel tests. During the design phase, the sensor figures of merit are considered and evaluated for specific aerodynamic applications. The aim of this work is the production of low cost MEMS-alternative devices suitable for a sensor network to be implemented in air data system. The last two year was dedicated to a project regarding Wireless Pressure Sensor Network for Nautical Applications. Aim of the developed sensor network is to sense the weak pressure field acting on the sail plan of a full batten sail by means of instrumented battens, providing a real time differential pressure map over the entire sail surface. The wireless sensor network and the sensing unit were designed, fabricated and tested in the faculty laboratories. A static non-linear coupled mechanical-electrostatic simulation, has been developed to predict the pressure versus capacitance static characteristic suitable for the transduction process and to tune the geometry of the transducer to reach the required resolution, sensitivity and time response in the appropriate full scale pressure input A time dependent viscoelastic error model has been inferred and developed by means of experimental data in order to model, predict and reduce the inaccuracy bound due to the viscolelastic phenomena affecting the Mylar® polyester film used for the sensor diaphragm. The development of the two above mentioned subjects are strictly related but presently separately in this artwork.

E-government should be at the heart of service delivery in developing countries if the life of citizens, especially the socially and economically marginalised, is to be improved. Often in developing contexts, citizens have been treated as recipients of such interventions, in a top-down approach from central governments, resulting in the non-use of such interventions. A situation of non-use of e-services results in wastage of the public fiscus. The extant literature points to a number of underlying causes of the problem. One such problem is the “Design-Reality Gap."

In addition, three new magnetic structures for the E-core SRM comprising two segmented stator cores or a monolithic stator core are proposed for good manufacturability, mechanically robustness, ease of assembly, and electromagnetic performance improvement. Each E-core stator in the segmented structure has three poles with two small poles at the ends having windings and a large center pole containing no copper windings. The common stator pole at the centers in the segmented E-core is shared by both phases during operation. Other benefits of the common poles contributing to performance enhancement are short flux paths, mostly flux-reversal-free-stator, constant minimum reluctance around air gap, and wide pole arc equal to one rotor pole pitch. Therefore, two additional common poles in the monolithic E-core configuration are able to significantly improve efficiency due to more positive torque and less core loss by the unique design. Using a full MEC analysis, the effect of the common-pole structure on torque enhancement is analytically verified. Efficiency estimated from the dynamic simulation is higher by 7% and 12% at 2000 rpm and by 3% and 7 % at 3000 rpm for the segmented and single-body SRMs, respectively, compared to a conventional SRM with four stator poles and two rotor poles. The new E-core SRMs are suitable for low-cost high-performance applications which are strongly cost competitive since all the new E-core SRMs have 20% cost savings on copper and the segmented E-core SRMs have 20% steel savings as well. Strong correlation between simulated and experimentally measured results validates the feasibility of the E-core common-pole structure and its performance. A simple step-by-step analytical design procedure suited for iterative optimization with small computational effort is developed with the information of the monolithic E-core SRM, and the proposed design approach can be applied for other SRM configurations as well. For investigating thermal characteristics in the two-phase single-body E-core SRM, the machine is modeled by a simplified lumped-parameter thermal network in which there are nine major parts of the motor assembly.

Streszczenie:
This work was based on the synthesis and characterization of innovative crystals for biomedical and technological applications. Different types of syntheses were developed in order to obtain crystals with high photocatalytic properties. A hydrothermal synthesis was also processed to correlate the chemical-physical characteristics with synthesis parameters obtaining synthesis of nanoparticles of titanium dioxide with different morphology, size and crystalline phase depending on the variation of the synthesis parameters. Also a synthesis in water at 80 °C temperature and low pressure was developed from which anatase containing a small percentage of brookite nanoparticles were obtained, presenting a high photocatalytic activity. These particles have been used to obtain the microcrystals formed by an inorganic core of hydroxyapatite surface covered by TiO2 nanoparticles. Micrometer material with higher photocatalytic has been produced. The same nanoparticles have been functionalized with resorcinol oxidized in order to increase the photocatalytic efficiency. Photodegradation test results have confirmed this increase. Finally, synthetic nanoparticles with a waterless synthesis using formic acid and octanol, through esterification "in situ" were synthesized. Nanoparticles superficially covered by carboxylic residues able to bind a wide range of molecules to obtain further photocatalytic properties were obtained.

Vehicular communications in Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are becoming more common and used nowadays. For this type of communications to work a standard was developed as an improvement from the Wi- Fi regular standard, the IEEE 802.11p, that works in the 5.9 GHz band. In order to allow the use of such communication systems, Power Ampli ers (PAs) are one of the most important parts of the RF frontends. They have to be as linear as possible to allow high transmission data rates and Spectrum Emission Mask (SEM) compliance. Linearity can be achieved through the correct selection of the transistor bias point or through predistortion. Since e ciency is also one of the main concerns for today's communication systems, predistortion is becoming a technique that is commonly used, avoiding an unnecessary back-o of the PA. In this thesis, the objective is to design and implement a PA that is compliant with the four power classes of the IEEE 802.11p standard: A, B, C and D, being D the most stringent one, which requires a highly linear ampli er. In order to achieve this goal, some theoretical concepts are explained during this thesis, regarding the standard and PA characteristics. The design and simulation are presented with several illustrations and results to sustain and describe all the work performed in a cohesive and simple way, from the PA design to the Digital Predistorter (PD) implementation. While for classes A, B and C the designed ampli er matches the speci cations, for class D a Digital PD was used. In the end of this document, the PA is tested with and without the PD, comparing both results and also doing the regular 1-tone tests for e ciency, gain and power output for the frequency of operation of the IEEE 802.11p standard. The first part of this thesis has focused on the construction of a twelve-phase asynchronous machine for More Electric Aircraft (MEA) applications. In fact, the aerospace world has found in electrification the way to improve the efficiency, reliability and maintainability of an aircraft. This idea leads to the aircraft a new management and distribution of electrical services. In this way is possible to remove or to reduce the hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic systems inside the aircraft. The second part of this dissertation is dedicated on the enhancement of the control range of matrix converters (MCs) operating with non-unity input power factor and, at the same time, on the reduction of the switching power losses. The analysis leads to the determination in closed form of a modulation strategy that features a control range, in terms of output voltage and input power factor, that is greater than that of the traditional strategies under the same operating conditions, and a reduction in the switching power losses.

Mass production of consumer products is both wasteful and limit the consumers' power to influence the design of what they are buying. When shopping for a product, the customer must choose between a range of specific products with limited variations. What if the customer could make all the design choices, creating and buying the product according to his or her own needs? A 3D product generator holding a configurable model of a product was created to replace static content in online stores and give creative power to customers. This work aimed at creating an effective 3D product generator by evaluating how users experience the design of and interaction with it, and finding general design goals when introducing interactive 3D content in static 2D environments. A prototype of a 3D product generator in a generic online storefront was implemented in two iterations, improving on and evaluating the design through usability testing. The evaluation of the final prototype suggested that the interface was indeed effective in both design and interaction. This work concludes that user feedback is crucial to creating a successful user experience, which in turn is important when creating interfaces for product configuration.

Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs) is an emergent technology for various application areas such as security and surveillance applications, traffic control, energy control, etc. Designing and developing applications using these technologies remain, however, a challenging task. Indeed, finding the relevant sensors and actuators, and combining them in a proper way in order to achieve a specific goal is not an easy task and requires several skills detained by different stakeholders. Moreover, sensor/actuator environments are inherently highly dynamic. Furthermore, current applications are in general tightly coupled to the underlying infrastructure which hampers their reuse and flexibility to changes. In this thesis, we present a process-oriented and service-based approach for supporting the development of adaptive WSAN applications. Our approach decouples between the application logic and its implementation. A design-time model is first specified, as a flow of activities, which is then deployed in a particular environment. Decoupling the application logic from its implementation enables on one hand to foster the reuse at the application level and on the other hand to adapt the same application to different environments and situations. To assist designers in specifying new WSAN applications, we propose two methods: 1)activity and orchestration reuse through data flows, and 2)activity recommendation through control flows. Moreover, the same recommendation technique enables providing fault-tolerant mechanism enabling a WSAN application to adapt to changes due to sensor failures or constraints violation. Our approach has been validated by realistic use cases that have been implemented in the context of the European project VITRO platform and the Zodianet platform

Streszczenie:
The PhD activity described in the document is part of the Microsatellite and Microsystem Laboratory of the II Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna. The main objective is the design and development of a GNSS receiver for the orbit determination of microsatellites in low earth orbit. The development starts from the electronic design and goes up to the implementation of the navigation algorithms, covering all the aspects that are involved in this type of applications. The use of GPS receivers for orbit determination is a consolidated application used in many space missions, but the development of the new GNSS system within few years, such as the European Galileo, the Chinese COMPASS and the Russian modernized GLONASS, proposes new challenges and offers new opportunities to increase the orbit determination performances. The evaluation of improvements coming from the new systems together with the implementation of a receiver that is compatible with at least one of the new systems, are the main activities of the PhD. The activities can be divided in three section: receiver requirements definition and prototype implementation, design and analysis of the GNSS signal tracking algorithms, and design and analysis of the navigation algorithms. The receiver prototype is based on a Virtex FPGA by Xilinx, and includes a PowerPC processor. The architecture follows the software defined radio paradigm, so most of signal processing is performed in software while only what is strictly necessary is done in hardware. The tracking algorithms are implemented as a combination of Phase Locked Loop and Frequency Locked Loop for the carrier, and Delay Locked Loop with variable bandwidth for the code. The navigation algorithm is based on the extended Kalman filter and includes an accurate LEO orbit model.

In this thesis Genetic Algorithm Optimisation Methods (GA) is studied and for the first time used to design high efficiency microwave class E power amplifiers (PAs) and associated load patch antennas. The difficulties of designing high efficiency PAs is that power transistors are highly non linear and classical design techniques only work for resistive loads. There are currently no high efficient and accurate procedures for design high efficiency PAs. To achieve simplified and accurate design procedure, GA and new design quadratic equations are introduced and applied. The performance analysis is based on linear switch models and non linear circuitry push-pull methods. The results of the analytical calculations and experimental verification showed that the power added efficiency (PAE) of the PAs mainly depend on the losses of the active device itself and are nearly independent on the losses of its harmonic networks. Hence, it has been proven that the cheap material PCB FR4 can be used to design high efficiency class E PAs and it also shown that low Q factor networks have only a minor effect on efficiency, allowing a wide bandwidth to be obtained. In additional, a new procedure for designing class E PAs is introduced and applied. The active device (ATF 34143) is used. Good agreement was obtained between predicted analyses and the simulation results (from Microwave Office (AWR) and Agilent ADS software). For the practical realization, class E PAs were fabricated and tested using PCB FR4. The practical results validate computer simulations and the PAE of the class E PAs are more than 71% and Gain is over 3.8 dB when input power (Pin) is equal to 14 dBm at 2 GHz.

This dissertation has as its starting point the concept of Comunicational Metropolis proposed by Massimo Canevacci, establishing a connection with the research of Lev Manovich, which explains an increasing influence of software in our society. Thus, taking these two pillars as a foundation, this research aims to understand the concept of a communicational metropolis that is emerging from the use of applications for mobile communication devices (smartphones). Mobile media has become a key part of this work since they provide mobility to the user who moves around physical spaces, promoting greater interaction with the local context and causing new communication and social dynamics. Data referenced within this thesis indicate that in a short period of time, almost all mobile handsets will be smartphones and will reconfigure once and for all the existing social practices. However, the metropolis observed in this study overcomes the communicational framework proposed, since it is also a creative, projectual, audiovisual and softwarized environment. In this context, a set of mobile applications exploring urban issues arise as a contemporary tool. In different ways, this tool dialogues with the multiple metropolis, from the design practices that daily occur in it, to the cultural transformations generated by this tool. In order to answer the research questions and to identify the changes that happened, Walter Benjamin’s character flâneur was used as a methodological resource that gave rise to the construction and analysis of 15 fragments extracted from a digital communicational metropolis observed through popular apps and its images. The intersection of these fragments highlighted peculiarities and dynamics that updated the understanding of a Communicational Metropolis, structuring it as a combination of its streets, avenues and dynamics caused by the apps. A combination of selfies and urban landscapes; check-ins and earned benefits; the established ‘smarphonization’ and the lack of predominant WiFi signal; getting lost and not ever getting lost; digital culture and media processes; models, habits and experiences; creativity and design; voices, media and messages; shares and devices; that is, a composition of mobile applications themselves and the communicational metropolis which they interact with.

The adoption of Blockchain technology looks promising in many areas. However, it is still a relatively new area of research, and implementations are not entirely free of challenges. This study focuses on the potential benefits of blockchain adoption in the public sector, with the potential to enhance democratic processes. Blockchain technology is, by design, apt at managing several significant challenges regarding communication and security in digital networks. This includes maintaining data integrity, enhancing security and privacy, and to mitigate fraud and manipulation. Possible issues that might arise when applied to the public sector is regarding law and regulation compliance. To cover the current state of the field, an exploratory literature review has been conducted. Among the results are several interesting blockchain projects around the world with emphasis on civic dialogue. Studying possible network architectures it appears that Hyperledger Fabric is the most prominent when it comes to implementations in the public sector. Based on this study, and on input from experts within the field, a proposed model that could be implemented and tested on a smaller scale is presented. The purpose is to record and track expenditures on public sector projects and make them available to the public.
