Streszczenie:
This doctoral thesis is a practice-led and corporate-grounded enquiry into the role of design research methods in a global technology company. The work aims to understand and communicate through a series of case studies how locally conducted participatory action research can be integrated into the processes of an in-house design team at the global NCR Corporation. It questions the current approaches taken in the design and development of consumer transaction technologies in the context of a global organisation and new markets. The thesis starts by introducing the reader to the global corporation in which the study is focused and author employed, the NCR Corporation. The contextual grounding of the corporate environment, its heritage, history and continued evolution will illustrate the dynamic yet traditional role design has played within the corporation. As a senior member of the Consumer Experience Design (Cx Design) team in the corporation the author is well placed to evaluate the role of design and how it can evolve. The immediate contextualisation is then followed by a broad examination of the literature in the field of design in a corporate culture, research methods and socially-led innovation. This will define the boundaries of interest and influence in the thesis. A participatory action research approach was taken to address the research questions. Informed by a series of hyperlocal and global community engagements framed and directed from within the corporate culture, the author defines an understanding of the levels of community engagement through design research. The resulting outputs are then applied within the context of the NCR Corporation where the impact and influence on such engagements can be understood. The author concludes that his contribution to new knowledge, the development of a Participatory Action Based Strategic Design Process, can be applied within a global technology company. The process adapts McNiff’s and Whitehead’s (2011) seven phases of action research reporting and Ravi Chhatpar’s strategic decision-making process. The thesis demonstrates the value and influence of design research methods in the design of consumer transaction technologies. The thesis provides an understanding of how design research methods have been applied in a corporate environment, how the insights are applied, and demonstrates how the research has influenced the author’s practice and therefore the wider Cx Design group.

Streszczenie:
The iTour Project is an empirical study of the design of online interactive animated tours (iTours), and establishes a knowledge base for technical communicators and new media designers working in this area. The key objectives of this research were to understand the features of effective iTours; to explore the processes and techniques of designing and testing effective iTours; and to establish new praxis in new media design for technical communication. Design artefacts resulted from six key activities including: (1) Sub-project 1- RMIT Multimedia Online documentation with basic animation; (2) Sub-project 2- Online @ RMIT Orientation with some iTour animation; (3) Third-party iTour analytical review to deconstruct iTours and determine key elements; (4) Sub-project 3- Online @ RMIT iTours; (5) iTour Guidelines; and (6) A second, more comprehensive third-party iTour analysis to test the Guidelines. The outcome of the research is encapsulated in a web site that binds the artefacts of design sub-projects with a set of Guidelines. These Guidelines form a conceptual, structural and operational framework for iTour designers, and draw on the knowledge established while designing and testing iTours, analysing third-party iTours, and researching comparative fields. These fields include technical communication; new media; web; usability design and testing; and, to a lesser extent, software design and testing. The Guidelines, in conjunction with the knowledge base, were developed to facilitate effective communication through iTours. Through this research, the design action case study was established as a hybrid research approach: design research and action research are blended; and knowledge is situated within, and derived from, a case study. In support of design research, the PDIOR design cycles have been specified and include these phases: plan; develop; implement; observe; and reflect. The PDIOR approach combines design research and action research in a cyclical mode to explore technical communication and new media activities. Finally, eleven principles for designing effective iTours emerged from this research project. Articulation of these principles, in addition to the Guidelines, contributes new knowledge in the field for technical communicators, new media designers and others, who wish to engage in iTour design.

Kaiser, Lena Katharina, i Anna Federika Würthner. "Keeping SaaS business clients loyal : An exploratory multi-case study on how to design loyalty initiatives". Thesis, Internationella Handelshögskolan, Jönköping University, IHH, Företagsekonomi, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-48974.

Streszczenie:
Business-to-business customer loyalty management is an essential and long-standing theme in business research and practice. Loyal clients are of great importance within Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), as the business model relies strongly on long-term business relationships, e.g. due to subscription models. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there is no study on how to design loyalty initiatives used in business-to-business SaaS relationships yet. Therefore, our thesis asks the question “How can loyalty initiatives be designed to improve the loyalty of SaaS business clients?”. By applying a qualitative research methodology with multi-case studies, we were able to investigate the status-quo of customer loyalty management by looking at the vendor side and then analysing the perception of loyalty initiatives, with respect to the client’s perspective. A broad number of in-depth empirical data was collected in semi-structured interviews conducted with employees of six SaaS vendor firms and seven of their clients. As we used an abductive approach, we were able to compare our findings with the existing literature and extend previous theory. Our interview findings were then clustered into eight dimensions, which were based on the customer lifecycle, and various initiatives have been assigned to them. All initiatives included several actions performed by the vendors, which were then classified into three categories, according to how important it was perceived by their clients. We concluded our research with the ‘Design Guide for Loyalty Initiatives’ that summarises our findings and provides an overview for SaaS vendors to review and adjust their initiatives. Hence, we deliver valuable insights for SaaS vendors to gain a deeper understanding of their clients’ needs and to, in turn, prioritise their performed loyalty actions and allocate their budget accordingly.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
There is currently an ongoing transition into more sustainable aviation. One of the sustainable alternatives to the conventional fossil-fueled aircraft is electric aviation. The research aim of the study could be divided into two parts. The first part was to identify the barriers to the development of electric aviation in Sweden. The second part was to ascertain if and, in that case, how the process to reach dominant design can be affected by the actors. Empirical data was mainly gathered through semi-structured interviews. In order to address the research aim, a theoretical framework built upon theories from both multi-level perspective and dominant design theory was used. There were barriers arising from Financial, Regulatory & Political, Business Model & Legitimacy, and Technical conditions. The theoretical analysis implied the existence of two socio-technical gates. These gates consist of collaboration and legitimacy aspects. Metaphorically passing through these gates would make overcoming the relevant barriers much easier. This would also align all elements of the transition, which makes it possible for the actors to affect the process of achieving dominant design.

This thesis explores online sociability practices in a discussion website for feminist activists in Central and Eastern Europe. It examines the constitution of identity, community and social action focusing on interactive, generic, technological, and discursive context of online communication. The project draws its methods from action research framework and virtual ethnography, and investigates key themes of the thesis through designing an online discussion forum and participating in its collective discussions. Its analytical strategy is informed by sociolinguistic approaches which perceive language as relational, dialogic and encompassing action. Drawing on a variety of theoretical frameworks, including Bakhtin's philosophy of language, speech act theory, contemporary approaches to genre studies, feminist theory and praxis debates, cyberfeminism and actor network theory, I analyze identity, community, and feminist action as sites of social action shaped by interactive exchanges, generic forms of communication, technology, and feminist discourse. On the one hand, I interrogate how commonsense/popular feminism constructs online feminist action and agency, and on the other how the textual/discursive/virtual context of the Internet challenges and has the potential to shift the understanding of these terms. I argue that on the new terrain of the Internet, speech and action have been reconfigured and that the modernist understanding of embodied action and self determined subjectivity that informs traditional action research as well as activist strategies has to shift. This thesis further argues that certain strands of radical feminism constitute a common rhetorical place through which the participants negotiate their identity, authority, the terms of membership and articulate action in an international and virtual speech community. It describes these 'common places' as idiomatic feminism and implies that they function as a metanarrative/ meta-political commonsense that crosses international borders. This thesis points to\vard the need to rethink questions of action and agency on the Internet and become more attuned to the rhetorical-material-discursive context of their production.

Educational projects offering an alternative to the traditional, formal system are increasing in number. Many hold ideals of participative learning and the development of personal autonomy but are also committed to a particular political vision. The interest of this case-study lies in the consideration of how such educational values may interact with a call to support and act upon a set of beliefs. This tension between open-ended educational work and directed action is a central problem in Paulo Freire's pedagogy. Freire talks of consciousness-raising as the process by which people become aware of the political implications of their personal situations. He advocates experience-based learning but also has an analysis of society which 'conscious' people are to realize. Conscientization, in these terms, is caught between a desire to have people take responsibility for their own learning and to teach a specific view of society. The learning process thus comes into conflict with the curriculum content with priority necessarily being given to one over the other. Freireian concepts such as dialogue, praxis and transformation are central to many alternative educational projects although they are frequently ill-defined, containing contradictions and creating confusion. This may be reflected in their organizational structures as well as in their outreach work. This study considers the relationships between learning and action, individuality and unity and equality and expertise so as to articulate the difficulties faced by the project under discussion. The aim of this study is not to provide a set of solutions for the project to adopt but rather to define areas of concern so that the project itself is better able to determine its own direction. The means by which these areas are uncovered and shared with interested parties is therefore of central importance. Thus the limits and possibilities of participant-observation as an evaluative approach are explored with particular interest in the setting up of the contract, the definition of the problem and the communication of the insights gained back to the project stakeholders. The project selected for this case-study is 'End Racism and Sexism through Education' (E.R.A.S.E.), a small, Cape Town based initiative.

Streszczenie:
Limited research has been conducted concerning the actual practice of health education in Victorian schools. This study investigates the health education curriculum at a large primary school in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The investigation involves a critical analysis of current practices in health education in the upper school through the development of a ‘small’ action research group. Data were gathered through document collection, questionnaires, interviews, discussions, diary and reflective journal entries. The action research group, consisting of the teacher-researcher and upper school teachers, developed, implemented and reflected upon units of work piloted with upper school students. Alternative approaches to health education were explored. The aim was to accommodate critically informed discourse amongst colleagues to promote self-reflective enquiry and facilitate improvements to existing pedagogic practices. During the course of the investigation, factors limiting and facilitating action research and curriculum change in health education, became evident. These included personal, practical, curriculum and organisational constraints operating externally and internally on the school and classroom environments. Despite these constraints, it was demonstrated in this study, that action research can contribute to the improvement of pedagogic practices in health education. Small ‘authentic’ action research projects may provide alternative internal professional development structures for teachers and consequently improve learning opportunities for students.

Spain’s rapid implementation of renewable energy has been described as a success but thegovernmental cost associated to this rapid implementation has grown significantly. The purposeof this report is to investigate Spain’s electricity market, its current situation and present it, usingthe Swedish system as a reference. The report commences with a presentation of the Spanish and the Swedish electricity markets, followed by a chapter where they are compared. The renewable electricity production and theassociated development during the last decade is one focus of the comparison. The other focus ishow the costs of the subsidy systems have evolved and how they are connected to the differentenergy sources. Two sources, wind and solar, receives a higher interest than the others.Wind power shows a strong development in electricity production and contributes to asignificant part of the Spanish electricity mix. The costs of subsidies connected to the windpower reflect the produced electricity. Wind power in Sweden has had a rapid development overthe last two years and the subsidies costs are aligned with the electricity production through theuse of a quota system. There are great differences between the two countries regarding solar power. Sweden has hardlyany, while Spain has a noticeable contribution of electricity from solar power to its electricitymix. Solar power has an even more noticeable share in the Spanish subsidy system. The highsubsidies to solar power, which have not followed the reduced investment costs of equipment inrecent years, have led to a high degree of participation which has led to soaring costs for thesystem. Spain’s subsidy system is based on fixed earnings and variable costs and in combinationwith higher than expected costs, an annual deficit between the earnings and cost has been createdfor the government. This yearly deficit has increased and the Spanish government is now in debtto the five largest energy suppliers. The Swedish subsidy system carries its own costs and theSwedish government does not have a financial risk associated with the system. This study shows that the Spanish subsidy system has been too generous towards solar powerwhich is a large part, but not the only one, to the country’s huge deficit and debt. Sweden, withits quota system constructed without fixed earnings, does not risk creating a debt similar toSpain’s. Spain’s large part of wind power and how the volatile power is regulated could be ofinterest for Sweden which aims to increase its share of wind power in the future. This study findthe answer to how Spain copes with its high share of intermittent power production in that itaccepts a lower efficiency in its gas turbines in order to regulate the power output. Sweden, acountry without a large share of gas in its electricity mix, but with a large share of hydro power, uses its hydro capacity to regulate volatility in electricity system. Prior studies have already beenmade in this area with the result that 30 TWh of electricity from wind power, more thanSweden’s goal for 2020 regarding wind power, would be possible to regulate with the presentsystem each year.

Packaging is a topic under debate and scrutiny in today’s society, due to its obvious environmental detriment – but also the business opportunities – tied to minimizing or even eliminating packaging. Therefore, two major Swedish companies have collaborated with KTH in order to investigate this field by using a pair of reading glasses as an example. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the applicability of sustainable packaging design practices and theories in a business case study, and also the value generated in the case study. The results were a review of five sustainable packaging design practices and theories in relation to the case study, and the design of a new packaging called ‘Toblerone’. The conclusion was that all five practices and theories were applicable to the business case study in theory, but in practice, two of them were not economically viable. The link between economic performance and environmental performance had a massive impact on setting the ambition level of this type of sustainability research. However, the economic value generated at the end of the case study was a whopping 720% increase in shipping efficiency, while environmental and social values needed further investigations.

Leavitt, Trenda Carter. "Alternative drainageway design: a case study analysis". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44968.

Streszczenie:

Numerous scholars are outlining design approaches to reweave natural and cultural landscapes together to restore and enhance the quality of both. Typically they identify the following exigent issues within the contemporary landscape which need solving: fragmented, dysfunctional ecosystems;1 low wildlife and plant diversity; resource consumptive design; divorce of the human/cultural environment from natural ecosystems; infrequent human interaction with the ecosystem; and lost landscape legibility and regional identity. Strategies to solve these issues are varied, however most strategies include the following: reestablish ecosystem balance and function; increase wildlife and plant diversity; enhance and promote regional identity and landscape legibility; reconnect human landscapes with ecosystems; promote human interaction with the ecosystem; use nature as a design model; and redefine aesthetics. Many writers suggest combining identified components within a single design scheme for successful amelioration of cultural and ecosystem damage.

Alternative drainageway design projects are typically concerned with ecosystem restoration, enhancement of regional identity features, and civic space design within public landscapes. As such, this design genre offers an idea] venue to actualize criteria outlined by scholars: restore ecosystem health, reconnect people to ecosystems, and promote regional identity. However many alternative drainageway design projects address only ecosystem restoration and ignore public space, while others address public space to the detriment of ecological balance. The potential of alternative drainageway design to address multiple issues at once is tremendous, yet are there existing projects which match demands set forth by scholars?

This thesis seeks to answer that question by critical evaluation of a series of built alternative drainageway design projects. Criteria identified by scholars in the literature review are used as a framework to critically analyze and topically discuss selected projects. Because the same set of criteria is shared by reputed scholars, the derived criteria serve as a pertinent benchmark to evaluate the projects. Discussion and comparative analysis illustrates whether the projects embody identified criteria and identify if any projects meet rigorous multiple demands framed by scholars. By critically analyzing and identifying successful, multiple-solution projects, this thesis provides germane information to develop a foundation for twenty-first century drainageway design. The derived framework offers clear stepping stones for designers, based upon current theory and built projects, to effectively address pressing cultural and environmental issues of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century landscape. The derived framework thus forwards a methodology to re-weave natural and cultural landscapes together for the benefit both.

This dissertation drives throughout packaging, private labels and copycatting literature and analyses a potential copycatting case study. For this purpose, an empirical quantitative study was carried out comparing four of the main competitors in the Energy Drink sector. The results confirmed that the case study Private Label was in fact attested as a copycat of the National Brand. Further, it demonstrated that packaging similarity has its impact in the consumers perception, as it creates between products an association that gives to the consumer the perception that both products have similar quality and offer the same benefits. This demonstrates the threat that private label copycatting may represent to national brands and the major influence of packaging on consumer behaviour and its significance to organizations.

Greenman, Andrew. "The architecture of cultural enterprise : a study of design reflexivity in action". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13993/.

Streszczenie:
The cultural industries have an increasingly important role to play in policies addressing the UK's present and future economic competitiveness. Researching how entrepreneurial activity leads to the creation and maintenance of cultural enterprises is central to understanding the value added by such organisations. The present research contributes to our understanding of these important issues. An ethnographic approach, which is defined here as a set of methods for conducting field work (e.g., participant observation and semi-structured interviews) and a methodology for textual representations of social activity, is adopted to explore design thinking in action. The study aims at developing existing analyses which claim that contemporary production is becoming more design intensive and therefore reliant upon individuals and organisations supplying knowledge about design. This heightened awareness about the value of design for business is defined as design reflexivity, although the term is not used to indicate an epochal shift in capitalist production. Instead, design thinking is represented as central to the modem institutionalisation of knowledge. By adopting the concept of identity work, the research addresses the importance of the role of the cultural entrepreneur to the contemporary organisation of work. Empirical material, comprised of interview transcripts and field notes, is examined to understand how research participants engaged with the role of owner-founder of a design business. By 'limiting' the research to individuals located in an inner-city area and the design sub-field of the cultural industries, the research presents localised interpretations of the typical process of cultural enterprise. The metaphor of architecture is adopted to describe the act of arranging the voices of research participants through the application of an analytical model comprised of three phases. This phased analysis is not over-privileged above the participants' accounts, but to organise empirical materials which show how research participants accounted for their engagement with contemporary role of the designer (articulation); the limitations and opportunities of place and time (emplacement) and the accumulation of economic wealth comprised of tangible and intangible property (entanglement). The research connects the research participant's entrepreneurial organisation of design reflexivity together with analyses of the centrality of reflexive knowledge to study one area of knowledge intensive contemporary production.

Streszczenie:
This thesis asks the following question: "how does race and ethnicity emerge in the daily practice of community organizers who work in low-income, multi-racial, multi-ethnic neighbourhoods?" Given that the concepts of race and ethnicity are understood to be social constructs, community organizing practice is analysed in this thesis in terms of its' constitutive role. By examining community organizing practice in one neighbourhood in Québec, Canada, I argue that issues of race and ethnicity are largely constructed in community organizing practice as distinct from relations of power. I demonstrate this construction of race and ethnicity using data gathered from 16 community organizers through interviews, textual analysis and observations. I analyse the data from three angles: first, actions regarding issues of race and ethnicity that are normalized (i.e. "possible"); second, actions regarding issues of race and ethnicity that are constrained (i.e. "not possible"); and, lastly, actions that are resistant to normalized and/or constrained practices, and that link race and ethnicity to power relations. In this way, I delineate Foucault's "field of action" (1982, p. 221) regarding race and ethnicity in neighbourhood community organizing and demonstrate how the structure of power in community organizing functions to render the connection between race and power largely invisible.

This thesis was undertaken to gain greater insights into ethnic collective action (ECA). A review of the literature revealed five gaps; a narrow definition of ECA, a failure to investigate ECA as an interactive process, a tendency to focus on external structures, a limited acknowledgement of the importance of internal heterogeneity and of intra-actions, and a lack of explanation of the role and importance of actors' worldviews. My research challenged the gaps by proposing that ECA is not only an outcome, but also part of an ongoing process. This thesis builds on elements of the theoretical approaches used by some earlier scholars. This study of ECA resulted from ethnographic fieldwork in Jordan for 10 months. My research focused on two case study groups, the Circassian and Dom. In addition, I gathered data about the setting and the interactions between Jordanian society, government and voluntary sector organisations (VSO), and the two case study groups. I argue that ethnography provided a methodological framework which allowed me to gain insights into how different factors interact and impact on ECA. This research makes empirical contributions concerning the situation of Circassians and Dom in Jordan as well as some general theoretical conclusions regarding ECA. The research revealed that ECA is a dynamic and complex process which is affected by numerous factors that do not directly impact on ECA processes, but instead it is the interaction and relationships between these factors that impact on ECA. The main factors involved in understanding the interactions that affect ECA were the level of inclusion extended by external actors to members of the two case study groups, state policies and programmes, the case study groups' levels of cohesion and leadership and the worldviews of external and internal actors.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation reports on a case study investigation of the organisational setting of the Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau (KHB) in Taiwan. It reports on my methodological contribution in doing my study in a particular way, namely, by making use of my position in the Harbour to help develop multi-views in relation to the future. I tried not to abuse my working position as a former manager of warehousing and my current position as a researcher to make definite recommendations for action~ but I wanted to create some options for thinking about future plans for privatisation of port activities through involving less power distance than is normally associated with planning in the Harbour. My study was not carried out by trying to operate in a neutral fashion. For instance, I clearly had an own involvement in raising questions in the interviews (individual and group) with participants and in the way I developed further questions during interviews and also carried information across interviews. I also tried to create some discussion on important issues that created high emotional responses for participants. I call my case study research, which was organised to be active in the hope to be of some benefit to participants, a special kind of case study. I reflect on the roles I played in the special case study in the dissertation. The dissertation also reports on the theoretical contribution that I think I have made in relation to some themes arising from the case study (cross-cultural learning, politics and development, and the relevance of systems thinking). It gives details on how these themes could be explored with reference to the case. I discuss the themes in relation to wider literature on the topics and I add my ideas.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Knowledge elicitation remains a fundamental feature of Knowledge Based Systems evolution. However, there is insufficient evidence to support the presumption that the knowledge elicitation philosophy is viable for design. Scant effort has been applied to research into techniques for design elicitation, and the nature of design is poorly considered. In particular, design tasks that involve visual design skills appear especially neglected. The scarcity of proven knowledge elicitation methods for design has not dampened the enthusiasm for "Intelligent" Computer Aided Design Systems. However, it is argued that design knowledge acquired from ad hoc, unsubstantiated and untested procedures, and knowledge that is undocumented and untested cannot be considered reliable. Indeed, it is extensively observed that a deficiency of intelligent performance exists in current ICAD systems, and the exigency for laudable design elicitation methods is prevalent Here, knowledge elicitation in design is promoted through a review of design and knowledge elicitation research literature. Design must be considered dissimilar to scientific problem solving, and the holistic nature of the task is an important characteristic. Further, the spatial, diagrammatical and drawing forms of communication, that are manifest in design, must be tackled. A method for the elicitation of design knowledge is proposed, and tested in the domain of page layout design. Computerised methods of knowledge acquisition currently lack the sophistication to expound the enigmas associated with design elicitation. It is concluded that the personal interview strategy is appropriate, in which the nature of the design task, and the visual and spatial components are equitably considered. The understanding of page layout design is demonstrated in a communicable report, and tested through an evaluation study. It is concluded that methodological principles of knowledge elicitation are appropriate to design, and a suitable method is outlined. The domain of page layout design illustrates that the techniques are successful, useful and practical.

Frantzi, Sofia. "Effectiveness of international environmental regimes : a case study of the Mediterranean Action Plan". Thesis, University of York, 2007. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9953/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Modern environmental problems are often so extensive that they do not respect national boundaries and cannot be managed by one country acting alone, so their management is attempted through regional or international agreements. The focus of academic research in international relations has been on issues associated with the challenge of achieving international cooperation, Le. on regime formation, and less attention has been paid to the actual effectiveness of implementation after. these' treaties come into force. Hence this thesis aims to investigate the issue of the effectiveness of international environmental regimes by looking at how effectiveness can be defined, and how it can be evaluated in a particular case. The main research question addressed in the thesis is 'What is environmental regime effectiveness and how is it evaluated?' The Mediterranean Action Plan I Barcelona Convention (MAP) was chosen as a case study because existing studies of its effectiveness present sharply contrasting views and, as a long established regime, it may have changed over time. ~xisting approaches to measuring effectiveness in the academic literature are characterised by a debate over institutional versus environmental effectiveness. It is argued that a complete theoretical framework would require inter alia evaluating both the institutional and environmental components of a regime, and also the interaction between them. A study using Q methodology reveals the existence of many discourses on MAP's effectiveness among practitioners. An examination of MAP's environmental effectiveness, shows that the environmental impact of regimes cannot be easily measured, and that the role of science in regime operation should be examined instead. The analysis of MAP's institutional effectiveness identifies a combination of qualitative criteria as determinants of institutional performance. Finally, an overall evaluation ofMAP based on the theoretical framework proposed in the thesis, shows a decline in its effectiveness compared to the early years of its operation. It is argued that it is the combination or trade-off of benefits in both environmental and political terms, that is the key to a regime's success.

This study reviews English teaching for second grader pupils in Finland. It focuses on the teacher’s role in children’s language learning and meaning making and the execution of sociocultural and ecological learning theories in an English classroom. In addition to sociocultural and ecological learning theories, the theoretical framework is based on earlier studies on language teaching and learning in a classroom setting and the national curriculum. The study is a case study conducted in an elementary school. The data was collected by observing an English lesson and interviewing the teacher. Three themes emerged in the analysis of the findings: learning through play, meaning making through multimodal resources, and guiding and providing affordances. The first two themes involve the methods and materials the teacher employs in teaching, and the last one reviews her role in the English lesson. The study sheds light on how the sociocultural and ecological learning theories and the national curriculum are visible in the three aspects found in the study

Streszczenie:
This thesis reports on a collaborative action research case study into the teaching of visual literacy to Grade 10 learners in a rural high school in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Visual literacy is one of the critical aspects that have been incorporated in the teaching of English First Additional Language as required by the National Curriculum Statement (Grade 10-12), which has been implemented in Grade 10 as from 2006. With the aim of improving learners’ performance in visual literacy I designed a visual literacy unit that consisted of lesson plans running over 7 periods in 10 school days. In implementing the unit the learners were first grouped and then exposed to visual grammar and visual texts and then they critically viewed such texts and designed their own. Data was collected daily in the form of individual learner journals, researcher’s journal/diary, and copies were kept of activities done by learners (individually or in groups). Also, two teachers were invited as non-participant observers to each visit a lesson. Learner focus groups were conducted and critical friends were interviewed, tape recorded and transcribed. A camera was used to take still photographs to show learner activities in groups and during group presentations. The data revealed that visual literacy could be taught meaningfully in a rural high school as the learners could identify, cut, paste and discuss elements of visual language and they finally designed their own advertisements in groups. In the analysis of data the following factors emerged as hindrances for successful teaching of visual literacy in a rural high school: lack of resources; learners’ lack of a foundation in visual literacy from Grades 7-9; and problems revolving around time management and pacing. As action research comes in spirals, this research represented the first one and the researcher found the study an eye opener and a foundation to build on in the second spiral (that is not part of this research).

This study explored how social aspects for stakeholder engagement are being addressed and incorporated in climate action plans (CAPs). This focus was chosen to address the knowledge gap in research on social conditions for climate action which has been found to provide barriers to achieving deep decarbonisation. The thesis conducted a case study of two cities, Copenhagen (Denmark) and Stockholm (Sweden). Each city’s CAP was analysed through a thematic document analysis that explored through what measures each city aim to achieve stakeholder engagement for local climate action.    Five overarching themes were identified through a literature review and used as an analysis framework: citizen engagement, private sector engagement, stakeholder collaboration, awareness development and advocacy. For both CAPs, the results showed an extensive variation for measures that contributed to each theme. The main findings were that measures should focus on developing collaborations, partnerships, networks, knowledge, awareness, skills, green procurement policies and stricter environmental regulations to support the level of stakeholder engagement needed for deep decarbonisation. Also, to focus on advocation measures, as well as measures aimed at developing knowledge and support to accelerate systematic change. In addition, it was found that cities need to focus on ensuring higher levels of equity and formalize extended citizen involvement for more inclusive and fair transitions. Findings also highlighted similarities and differences between the two CAPs, what lessons could be learned from these and connected these findings to how climate action could be further developed.

Streszczenie:
This research seeks to understand the perceptions of professionalism in education. In particular it focuses on the constructions of the space for professional action. A case study focuses on people, including teachers and non-teachers, who work in a special school for young people with SEBD. The perceptions of professionalism in education held by those in this case have been carefully listened to and analysed. Using an interpretive approach I have analysed data from interviews of members of the case. This reveals that a common language is used to describe professionalism but this is not commonly defined. There is an assumption that all share a common definition. In addition, other factors affect professional action. The experiences and life trajectories of the respondents are seen to colour and shape professional action. The construction of the space for professional action is problematic. There is a wide range of definition. The findings reveal that professionalism is complex and common language hides a wide spectrum of definition and meaning. Professionalism, as a concept, is often confused and misused. Foregrounding these confusions have contributed to the understanding of professionalism. There is tension between the constructions of professionalism. The person trying to enact professionalism in education has to interpret, sometimes incongruent, discourses and locate themselves within persuasive discourses. Awareness of these differences and tensions can help understand and allow them to make their own choices. The development of typologies as an analysis tool has been effective in understanding the space for professional action in this case. It is suggested that this might be used as a basis for professional discussion for others who are engaging in development in their own context. Professionalism in education is important as this impacts on the performance of each person and this performance effects the young people. It is argued that people trying to enact it should engage in professional discussion and agreement making to establish what is good and worthwhile in professionalism.

Streszczenie:
In this thesis I explore how to develop conservation action strategically for data-poor marine fishes. The dearth of information about populations, habitats and threats for many marine fishes makes it difficult to know how or where to initiate conservation strategies. My PhD research explores what type of information is essential for conservation management, and how it can be generated and applied for data-poor marine fishes. I use the case study of seahorses (Hippocampus spp), because they are notoriously understudied and yet their trade is regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). I further focus on Thailand, the largest exporter of seahorses, which has come under considerable international scrutiny. In my first two chapters I generated the spatial data that are vital to support conservation and management efforts. My results showed that using local knowledge to inform a presence / absence study, one that incorporated detection probabilities, was the most expedient way to produce the necessary spatial data. In my next two chapters I explored two approaches to understanding incidental capture of data-poor species in non-selective fishing gear. I found that vulnerability analysis yielded greater return on fewer data than data-poor fisheries stock assessment. However, data-poor fishery stock assessment made it possible to estimate stock status and revise management measures. For my fifth chapter, I applied findings from my previous chapters to meet CITES obligations, by assuming the role of a Thai government agent confronted with the external technical advice that I had generated. I found that implementation was most successful if I addressed three main questions: (1) What are the pressures on species?; (2) Is management in place to mitigate those pressures?; and (3) Are the species responding as hoped to management? My thesis highlights ways that management can move forward with limited data to address conservation issues for marine species. Some of these ways include valuing the use of local knowledge and using new advances in data-poor assessment methods in fisheries. Whenever fisheries are involved, conservationists need to respect the challenges that managers face in simultaneously seeking to protect wild species and meet human needs.

In-text activities are imbedded in selfstudy texts. Their construct is validated against appropriate instructional design and learning theories for active learning. A course team developed, implemented and piloted a Unisa course for mathematics teachers in South Africa. The results describe their professional development through action learning. The Tornado-approach affects teams in organisations. A team used participatory action research and action learning with rich descriptions to document the longitudinal case study of four action research cycles over eight years. Qualitative research involved a literature survey, notes, portfolios, mindmaps, letters, interviews, document analyses, and assessment results. Our action research demonstrates ways to implement a post-modern learning design in an industrialized· institution. The researcher applies action learning in professional development, in team management, and suggests models for successful/unsuccessful teams (tornado-effect).
