In order to know God, His nature, and His personification, use of various symbols can be helpful, which suggests the unification of two elements, namely the physical and spiritual ones. Acintya is the symbol or manifestation of God 's Omnipotence. It is the “unimaginable” that turns to be the “imaginable" through potraits, reliefs, or statues. All of these symbols are manifestation of the Acintya that takes the form of the dance of Shiva Nataraja, as the depiction of the Omnipotence of God, to bring in the actual symbol of the "Unthinkable " that have a meaning that people are in a situation where emotions religinya very close with God.</em></p>

Douglas Campbell’s recent work The Deliverance of God represents a major rereading of Paul’s letter to the Romans, especially its early chapters, and through this offers a broader reinterpretation of Pauline soteriology, deliberately set in dialogue with theological traditions, particularly those founded on forensic understandings of atonement. This article evaluates the key elements of Campbell’s argument, particularly (1) his depiction of Jewish soteriology (2) his suggestion that much of Rom. 1.18–3.20 utilizes the rhetorical device of ‘speech-in-character’, and therefore represents the opinion of Paul’s opponent rather than that of the apostle himself, and (3) his treatment of historical theology. The Deliverance of God is found to be stimulating and provocative at points, and to be a significant contribution to the field, but unconvincing in its major moves.

This paper reexamines African-American writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston’s presentation of the self in Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), generally considered one of the most important African-American novels of the twentieth century. Originally criticized by Hurston’s contemporaries as a retrograde folk portrait of African-American life, Their Eyes presents the oral narrative of Hurston’s protagonist, Janie, a woman surrounded by natural and social cycles. Building on the novel’s allusive title and the convergent Biblical and folkloric frameworks of the work, I trace the evolving concept of “God” throughout the novel as external forces continually shape and reshape Janie’s world for her, questioning whether she can retain any individual agency navigating through these cyclical, predetermined pathways. The redefined vision of the individual that emerges from this reading counters the criticism of Hurston’s contemporaries, as Janie herself assumes the role of “God” at the novel’s conclusion and gains the power to create her own cycles, free from external control. I thus argue that the novel transcends its supposed function as a depiction of the African-American self to make a broader, humanistic claim for the power of the individual, not contingent on social distinctions.

This article problematises the widespread assumption that the God of early Christianity is an invisible God. This assumption is found in both popular and academic discourse and often appeals to biblical critiques of divine images to make its case. Yet while Hebrew Bible scholars have recently questioned this axiomatic belief, New Testament scholars have yet to do the same. To address this oversight, this article first looks at divine images and idol polemic in the ancient world and then turns to Luke's depiction of divine images in the book of Acts as a test case. Here I demonstrate how Acts depicts God as a visible – and even embodied – being, while at the same time critiquing visual representations of the divine. With Acts, we find that not all Christians ‘imaged’ God as invisible.

A critical and mutually enriching conversation may be facilitated between Jürgen Moltmann's eschatology and some of the concerns of contemporary theologians of mission. In the service of greater theological clarity, the following essay suggests four distinct lines of inquiry: how Moltmann's understanding of an “eschatologically open future” challenges the modern doctrine of cause and effect; the importance of a Trinitarian depiction of God as a sending God; Moltmann's proposal for a robust, Christian theology of history; and the scope of God's salvation, particularly as it is related to Moltmann's complicated and creative panentheism.

ABSTRACTThe focus of this article is twofold. First, recognizing the influence of the mass media on the religious views of many undergraduate students, it examines the negative depiction of God in several popular American films and concludes that the image of God as absent, impotent and demonic ought to be addressed in the classroom. The second issue concerns the use of film in the classroom—both to encourage students to sharpen their understanding of contemporary theology, and to then use this theology as a basis for understanding and evaluating the religious messages carried by contemporary films. The films explored are What Dreams May Come, Dogma, The End of the Affair, The Rapture, and Stigmata.

The concept of God written in "Serat Kidungan Kawedhar" by Sunan Kalijaga is interesting enough to be studied by devotees of Javanese philosophy. Such as the concept of God written in this Serat, particularly regarding the existence of God as "Sangkan Paran" which makes this Serat needs to be reviewed and examined. There are two main problems in this study; concerning the concept of God as Sangkan Paraning Dumadi in the Serat Kidungan Kawedhar and the teachings of the concept of God in Serat Kidungan Kawedhar for todays people life. With a descriptive method, content analysis and verstehen, this research shows that God described in "Serat Kidungan Kawedhar" is called Hartati which is a form of God's manifestation within humans. While to ease the preaching of the messages, it named God by Sang Hyang Guru and Sang Hyang Hayyu. As the depiction of God "Ngadeg Pangawak Teja" which means standing upright with the light, or God is the light path for human life. This Serat is a hymn used by Sunan Kalijaga in Islamizing Java. Furthermore, it contains religious values regarding the seeking of God as a Creator and paths to be united towards God (manunggal marang Gusti). Moreover, Sunan Kalijaga also said in this Serat that humans must be able to understand themselves and their purposes of life by applying tepa slira and keep caring for God through Dhikr, because it will make people closer to God.

Streszczenie:
The Reformed tradition, following Zwingli and especially Calvin, excluded images from the churches. Calvin rejected the sacred images of his day as idolatrous on the grounds that they were treated as making God present, that the necessary distinction between God and God’s material creation was not maintained, and because an image, which rightly was to be mimetic of visible reality, could not truthfully depict God. Calvin approved the Renaissance notion of visual art as mimetic and he understood that artists’ abilities were gifts of God and were to be used rightly. He also had a very keenly developed visual aesthetic sense in relation to nature as the “mirror” of God’s glory. However, the strong human tendency towards idolatry before images, he believed, meant that it was not expedient to place any pictures in the churches. Reinterpretation of key biblical passages, particularly the first and second commandments (Calvin’s numbering), together with changes in the understanding of what constitutes visual art, of the relationships between words and visual images, and of the processes of interpretation and reception not only of texts but of all perceived reality, lead to a re-thinking of the issues. The biblical narrative with its theological insights can be interpreted into a visual language and used by the church as complementary to, but never replacing, biblical preaching and teaching in words. Attention to the visual aesthetic dimensions of the worship space is important to allow for this space to function as an invitation and call to worship. Its form, colour, light and adorning may give aesthetic delight, which leads to praise and thanksgiving, or it may provoke other response which helps people prepare to offer worship to God. The world and its people depicted in visual art/image may inform the praying of the church and the visual representation of the church (the saints) may provide congregations with an awareness of the breadth of the church at worship in heaven and on earth. In the present diversity of views about visual art and the work of the artist there is freedom for the artist to re-think the question of vocation and artists may find new opportunities for understanding and exercising their vocation not only in secular art establishments and the community but also in relation to the worship of the church.

This thesis analyzes the work of Vasily Shuksin, an actor, director and writer in the Soviet Union during the Khrushchev and early Brezhnev eras, roughly 1958-1974. Shukshin's short stories, in particular, are of great value to anyone interested in Soviet attitudes during this period. The research suggests that Shukshin's work represents a sort of underground history. While the writer's stories are fictional, the issues are very real. Much of Shukshin's work provided the means for discussion on important topics such as gender relationships, alcohol use, and religious worship.Under Communism, nearly all sources of information were unable to tell the truth about Soviet society, but Shukshin's depictions of Soviet life appear to present a truer picture of the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras. The author portrays women as "second class citizens" and often equates them with evil, while Shukshin's depictions of drunken males indicate that alcoholism was a serious problem in the Soviet Union. Finally, the author's religious symbolism provides evidence that Russian Orthodoxy was alive and well, despite a Communist government that continued to wage war against religion.

The depiction of exotic wild animals by British artists during the nineteenth century can be related to social issues dominant at the time, especially concerning evolution, questions of gender and Empire. Central to the argument of this thesis is that while wild animals exist in opposition to domestic ones, they are often anthropomorphised or used to represent negative human qualities. The wild animal offers a potent subject matter and, in the work of late eighteenth century artists, relates to the notion of the Sublime. Debate surrounding evolutionary theory clearly affected artists and the impact of Charles Darwin is considered. However, other scientific works of the period are also taken into account, as Darwin's theories cannot be seen as existing alone. Exotic animals formed a large part of entertainment during this period, thus the issue of how they are represented within this sphere will also be examined. Colonial exploration affected the portrayal of the wild animal, which is subsequently depicted as both hunted and hunter. Furthermore, the wild animal frequently adopts national significance; connotations of blood-lust and ferocity are easily transferred between human and animal. Mythological animals support the visual creation of separate male and female realms, as does the representation of animal products, which are used to cover the human body; fur and snakeskin offer a provocative addition to the nude figure. The nineteenth century saw the increased credibility of animal painting. Indeed, the exotic animal became a site of reflection upon which social concerns were projected. As a compelling visual symbol, depictions of the wild animal reveal much about Victorian society.

Extreme violence, which often results in murder, is a prominent theme in the American literary canon; therefore, it deserves a wider and more focused lens in the study of Twentieth-Century American literature. Murder and entertainment seldom coexist in canonical literature, but the very nature of the murder, foreign to many readers, consequently piques one’s curiosity, and demands special attention. The literary texts I have chosen to discuss are four novels and three plays. They all belong to the genre known in literature as ‘a crime novel or play.’ The murderers are easily identified, and their criminal acts have been carried out successfully, often with much forethought and detail. My focus has been to conduct a psychological study to highlight the impetus for the crime. Three basic themes have captured my attention: 1- Is the murder a sin or a crime? What is the role of religion in the lives of the accused? 2- Is it right to blame society for such horrendous acts? 3- How is the American Dream portrayed in these works? The closer we get to the end of the Twentieth-Century, the harder it is to detect an affirmative ending in the works of literature I have explored. The insatiable appetite for material consumption overshadows the pursuit of happiness, or, maybe happiness is defined by material wealth. The critical question is: can American society read the warning written on the wall?

This study highlights the stereotypical depictions of journalists in film using a narrative analysis of four major Hollywood productions, starting with All the President’s Men from 1976 through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2011. Its purpose is to highlight traits given to journalists in the movies and re-occuring themes in the portrayal of the media and the journalistic occupation. Differences and commonalities between the films are concluded in a discussion of ethics, personalities and the media’s self image. The paper can be seen as a contribution to the paradigm in which journalism in the movies is perceived at the moment. It offers a wide explanation to how the image of the journalist is conveyed to the public, an image that differs from how real life journalists go about in daily work life. This is essential, since most people never get to experience journalistic work in reality – but solely from popular culture – which distorts the perception of the media as the fourth estate.

In 1993, the church of Humor Monastery and six other churches from northern Moldavia (Romania) were classified as UNESCO Patrimony, due to their unique iconographical and architectural features. Built in the sixteenth-century, Humor Monastery became a rich and vital cultural religious center under the patronage of Prince Petru Rares of Moldavia. This center encouraged ecclesial architectural innovations, as well as an extraordinarily prolific program of frescoes, both internally and externally, expressing creativity beyond the canon of painting of the time. This dissertation focuses on understanding these architectural and iconographical innovations, in the light of the historical context that gave rise to this unique moment in Moldavian history, in the century following the Fall of Constantinople (1453). While the first part of the dissertation focuses on these historical circumstances, and more precisely on the impact of the patronage of Prince Rares, the second part of the research concentrates on the literary sources and the theology of a unique fresco series depicting the “Life of the Mother of God,” which has been painted on the walls of the gropnita (burial chamber) of Humor monastic church. The fresco series is an extraordinary example of the interaction between texts, the apocryphon Protogospel of James and the Synaxarion, and the iconographic narration of the “Life of the Mother of God.” Careful attention to the iconography of the Humor monastic church demonstrates the need for the correlation between text and icon, as well as the need for a correlation between theological studies, art and history. This methodological perspective will foster a richer appreciation of the abundant cultural and religious treasures of the Christian communities of Eastern Europe, both from a cultural as well as a specifically theological perspective as a further response to their prestigious recognition of being included in the UNESCO’s Patrimony in the closing decade of the twentieth - century.

Literature, films, and even the daily news often address war, an event that unfortunately has been a constant in modern society. Large scale, modern warfare with global involvement began with the First World War, and following the war, a global war literature boom occurred. Two bestselling novels whose anti-war themes still resound today, Im Westen nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front) by Erich Maria Remarque and Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, emerged from this sea of literature. Both of these novels focus on the pain that is inherent in warfare and its detrimental effects on society as well as on individual soldiers. The graphic imagery and anti-war sentiment that is present in these novels has generated controversy throughout their histories; however, the popularity of both works has prevailed, and Remarque and Trumbo’s novels remain two of the most referenced in academic disciplines as well as in popular culture. This thesis explores the long-lasting success of these two works as anti-war novels, as measured by initial sales and popularity as well as by a plethora of mass cultural adaptations.

This book focuses on God’s body in the New Testament. While there are various views in the New Testament regarding God’s body, this work argues that Luke-Acts stands out as an important example of a New Testament text that portrays God as visible and corporeal. According to Luke, God is a visible, concrete being who can take on a variety of different forms, as well as a being who is intimately intertwined with human fleshliness in the form of Jesus. In this way, the God of Israel does not adhere to the incorporeal deity of Platonic philosophy, especially as read through post-Enlightenment eyes. Luke’s portrayal of God instead finds more affinity with Greco-Roman traditions that conceive of the divine in corporeal terms, and above all, with the God found in the pages of Jewish Scripture. Moreover, Luke’s depiction of Jesus as an embodied being has both similarities and dissimilarities with Luke’s depiction of Israel’s God and points ahead to future controversies concerning Jesus’s divinity and humanity in the early church. Indeed, in Luke-Acts and beyond, questions concerning God’s body are intimately intertwined with Christology and shed light on how to understand Jesus’s own visible embodiment in relation to God.

On the mountain of Nemrut Dağı in the kingdom of Commagene, we have a first-century BC stele with a depiction of a king, Antiochus I, grasping the hand of a figure named ‘Apollo-Mithras-Helios-Hermes’. This image, and others from across the kingdom depicting a god named in this way, call upon a variety of iconographic and linguistic traditions that raise questions about the way conceptions of the divine could be selected, rationalized, and propagated. This act of comparing and combining religious traditions, often referred to as ‘syncretism’, allows us to think about what the use of the name Mithra suggests to us beyond the relatively simple transmission of a god. In turn, the discussion of the importance of iconographies and names associated with deities leads us to reflect on the nature of divinity in antiquity more generally.

This chapter demonstrates how—through a complicated chain of intermediary texts—the depiction of Satan's fall through Chaos in book 2, which invokes the myth of Icarus, and the Son's successful ride in the paternal chariot of God at the end of the War in Heaven in book 6, which rewrites the story of Phaethon, both trace back to the De rerum natura of Lucretius. They counter the Roman poet's depiction of an Epicurean cosmos ordered by chance and in a constant state of falling through an infinite void—the “vast vacuity” of Chaos. The myths of these highfliers who fall are further countered in Paradise Lost by the motif of poetic flight. The shaping power of poetry itself and the epic high style counteract the specter of a universe without bound and dimension, or of the shapelessness of Death; poetry raises the poet over his fallen condition.

Under the heading “The Religion of Beauty” Hegel treats the polytheism of ancient Greece. The Greek religion shares with Judaism the idea that the divine is a self-conscious entity, and thus both represent religions of spirit. However, for Judaism, God was an object of thought and not of sense, and for this reason there were no images or representations of Jehovah. By contrast, it is, according to Hegel, one of the fundamental aspects of the Greek gods that they are represented in art. The analysis in Chapter 9 focuses on Hegel’s interpretation of how the Olympian gods arose out of an earlier generation of nature gods. This account is reflected in Greek mythology itself in the depiction of the war of the gods given in Hesiod. For Hegel, this represents clear evidence that the conception of the divine starts with natural deities and moves to gods of spirit.

Approaches that ignore this more fundamental investigation risk presupposing stances that do not withstand scrutiny and perhaps would never have been endorsed if considered directly. In addition, approaches that ignore the issue of fundamentality often switch from one set of assumptions to another without noticing the change in perspective that results, giving rise to a chance of incoherence and to an approach that is theoretically disorderly and thus failing to as systematic and elegant as we would like. This work begins with the more basic question of where to begin thinking about God, where it is best to start the project of theology, in a way that offers some hope of a defensible metatheory, from which a complete theology, displaying the kind of theoretical elegance and structure we find in our best scientific and philosophical theories, can be developed.

AbstractThis chapter explores how “digging deep”, which stands for the active “search for” inconsistencies in asylum seekers’ narratives in asylum interviews, becomes the morally correct thing for decision-makers to do. Building on Eckert (The Bureaucratic Production of Difference. transcript, Bielefeld, pp. 7–26, 2020) I challenge the depiction of bureaucracies as anethical and amoral. Ethics I understand not in a normative, but rather in an empirical sense, as the common good the administration is oriented towards. The chapter brings to light how particularly through fairness—both as a procedural norm and ethical value—digging deep is established as a routine, professionally necessary and desirable practice, which is connected to decision-makers’ role as “protectors of the system”. I argue that digging deep actively generates the “liars” and “false refugees” it sets out to “uncover”, thereby reinforcing the perception that, indeed, there “are” many false refugees which, again, strengthens the office’s and individual decision-makers’ endeavours to identify and exclude them from asylum.

AbstractThe application of sociometry assessments and written psychodrama interventions within one-to-one social work settings is the focus of this chapter. Interventions covered include the social atom, the role atom, modified role atoms, clinical timelines, psychodramatic journaling, and psychodramatic letter writing. Step-by-step instructions are provided for clinicians new to these techniques. Practice examples and clinical processing are offered with depictions of the social atom and role atoms. These tools are presented individually with supporting theory but are often employed together or as a warm-up for a psychodrama enactment. Novice psychodramatists or those less experienced in action methods will find these approaches as a good starting point for beginning to integration sociometry and psychodramatic interventions into their clinical practice with individuals. Though these tools will be presented for individual work, they are also applicable tools for group work and community settings.

This chapter details the response of segregationists and conservatives to the civil rights movement. It describes the depiction of the movement as violent following the death of Andy Whately, the ostracization of white Southerners who sympathized with demands for justice, like Warren Fortson, and the establishment of private Christian schools in response to integration. In these actions, white conservatives reframed their resistance to racial justice in theological terms that would come to define the Religious Right.

Exploring the nature and attributes of God is akin to crossing a mountain horizon. Thus, alien concepts of God should be avoided to make room for exploring the deep contours of the attributes of God. This begins with seeing God as an agent and then carefully identifying a network of descriptions that cluster in a rough way around the goodness of God and the power of God. The relevant attributes constitute a realistic depiction of God; they also rule out skeptical accounts which emphasize the apophatic at the expense of the cataphatic dimensions of our language about God. Divine simplicity can only be adopted if suitably qualified. Taken as a whole the attributes provide fitting background material for treatment of miracles, anthropocentric liabilities, and deep trust in God.

This chapter brings together the previous two chapters by looking at how the ascended Jesus’s form is both epiphanic and embodied. It begins by discussing ancient accounts of heavenly ascent and how portrayals of human bodies entering (or not entering) heaven are linked to larger cosmological and anthropological views. The remainder of the chapter focuses on how Luke narrates Jesus’s ascension into heaven as an epiphany but also in a manner that suggests Jesus is taken up into heaven in bodily form. Throughout Acts, Luke depicts Jesus appearing to his followers in epiphanies, and he likewise depicts Jesus as a human who is located in heaven. With Luke’s depiction of Jesus in his ascended state, the greatest degree of overlap occurs between how humans visually experience Jesus and God. At the same time, Luke also conveys that bodies are worthy of the heavenly realm, since Jesus is a human in heaven.

In the beginning, Ovid’s depiction of Jupiter accords with the usual elegiac fare. There is a certain amount of rivalry, as Ovid fears Jupiter might steal his girl; some flippant one-upmanship, as Ovid drops Jupiter-cum-thunderbolt when his girlfriend locks her door; copious irony, as the praeceptor Amoris instructs his pupils to imitate Jupiter in perjuring themselves. Ovid particularly enjoys “correcting” his predecessor Propertius on certain points of Jovian theology. The great works written close to the time of Ovid’s exile add a bitter edge to this playfulness, revisiting elegiac scenarios with a dramatic shift in focalization. Jupiter’s rapes and the suffering they cause are a leitmotif of Ovid’s epic Metamorphoses. In the Fasti, Jupiter is subjected to complex manipulation, instructed, diminished, and reframed according to the poet’s wish-fulfilling fantasies. As Augustus transformed the Roman experience of time by modifying the calendar, so Ovid seizes control of the discourse by shaping the calendar to his own poetic ends. When the thunderbolt strikes, banishing him to the Black Sea, Ovid creates a Jovian/Augustan mythology all his own. Like the Metamorphoses and Fasti, the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto show two possibilities for Jupiter, yet the Tristia’s impression of the cruelly wrathful Thunderer predominates over the Ex Ponto’s possibility of revivifying rain. Most importantly, by figuring himself as the heroes and—especially—heroines persecuted by the autocratic ruler of the Olympian pantheon, Ovid defines his poetry and his very self as a work of artistically fruitful, politically hopeless opposition to the new “Jupiter.”

This chapter discusses Freud’s depiction of Moses as an absolute monarch in Moses and Monotheism. The argument is that the portrayal of Moses as a tyrannical ruler essentially obscures a much more nuanced representation of Moses in the bible, as introduced in the scene of the Burning Bush, where Moses was not domineering nor demanding, but rather, suffered under the imperious demands of God. The analysis of the interaction of Moses with God borrows several concepts from Agamben’s theory of potentiality to argue that in contrast to the despotic Moses of Freud, the biblical Moses symbolizes the human struggle for impotentiality and freedom.

This chapter examines the role of the Bastard, one of the gods in Lois McMaster Bujold’s ‘Worlds of the Five Gods’ series, and his contribution to her depiction of an inclusive Queer Theology. Drawing on the queer theology of Marcella Althaus-Reid, the chapter considers the distinctive set-up of the five-fold Quintarian pantheon that Bujold establishes, and how it creates and subverts dualistic ideas. The chapter provides close readings of interactions with the Bastard, particularly in Paladin of Souls and the ‘Penric and Desdemona’ series, where the Bastard is the patron god, and analyzes how the idea of the Queer God becomes essential to an inclusive dialogue within religious identity and society. The chapter demonstrates how these novels and novellas afford Bujold the opportunity to reflect upon many of the vital social functions performed by real religions throughout history while challenging those dualistic theological systems that remain prevalent, particularly in Western culture.

Chapter one uses one of the jewels of late-medieval illuminated art from the studio of Parisian illustrator Maître François – a depiction of the flight from Sodom in a fifteenth-century manuscript of Augustine’s City of God – as the occasion to reflect on the ferment of patristic and medieval practices of allegorical composition and reading. The panorama shows how the allegory’s rich variance promotes established midrashic and exegetical habits of looking at Lot’s wife in Jewish and Christian biblical tradition -- a pictorial digest of condemnatory judgments. At the same time, the miniature’s design shows how allegory’s close affinity with the interruptive energy of figural expression (biblical typology) discloses breaches in the compositional chains connecting text and meaning. In these dead spaces between the visible and the legible, Maître François’ depiction of the abortive flight opens onto a glancing intuition of an ethics of prudential hospitality founded neither in the sovereignty of the law nor the satisfactions of duty.

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems utilize solar thermal energy for the generation of electric power. This attribute makes it relatively easy to integrate CSP systems with fossil-fired power plants. The “solar-augment” of fossil power plants offers a lower cost and lower risk alternative to stand-alone solar plant construction. This study ranked the potential to add solar thermal energy to coal-fired and natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) plants found throughout 16 states in the southeast and southwest United States. Each generating unit was ranked in six categories to create an overall score ranging from Excellent to Not Considered. Separate analysis was performed for parabolic trough and power tower technologies due to the difference in the steam temperatures that each can generate. The study found a potential for over 11 GWe of parabolic trough and over 21 GWe of power tower capacity. Power towers offer more capacity and higher quality integration due to the greater steam temperatures that can be achieved. The best sites were in the sunny southwest, but all states had at least one site that ranked Good for augmentation. Effects of the penetration on microstructure of the Al plate and the material’s microstructural evolution are also illustrated through SEM. Important Physical features of the penetration phenomena are observed from the penetration tests. A good understanding of Al-Al penetration mechanism can therefore be achieved from the experimental study, along which a standard experimental procedure can be established for investigating plasticity mechanisms that govern engineering material penetration.

Abstract Turbine rim cavities require an adequate supply of cooling purge flow to prevent hot gas ingestion from overheating metal components beneath the gas path airfoils. Purge flow is typically introduced into rim cavities through a labyrinth seal at the inner diameter of the cavity, or through conduits in the metal walls of the rim cavity. This numerical study will focus on purge flow introduced through axial holes in the stationary side of a turbine realistic rim cavity. Three dimensional Unsteady Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes (URANS) CFD modeling is utilized to model of cavity sealing effectiveness as a function of axial purge flow rate. CFD modeling is compared with experimental data from the test turbine in the Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START). Results show good agreement with experimental data, especially at lower purge flow rates. Analytical depictions of the flow field setup in the rim cavity are provided, explaining trends observed in experimental data. Differences in sealing effectiveness trends between the upper and lower portions of the rim cavity are predicted by CFD modeling, adding insight to ingestion phenomena in turbine realistic rim cavities with complex geometry and flow leakage paths.

Database technologies are a core component of computing technology curricula. Their importance will only continue to expand as more and more data are retained in database systems. An effective database system is predicated on a good data model. Database design is the conceptualization of an underlying data model that progresses from identifying user requirements to graphically depicting those requirements and finally mapping the graphical models to a set of tables implemented in a physical database system. The abstract nature of much of database design makes it challenging to teach. This paper presents a set of software animations designed to support the teaching of database design concepts. Topic areas covered include mapping problem descriptions to Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams, mapping ER diagrams to tables, normalization and denormalization and comparison of various ER notation sets. The animations are fairly intuitive to use and are independent of any specific database text or product. They are intended to provide supplemental instructional support and also provide students with additional learning opportunities.

Jet fuels currently in use in the aviation industry are exclusively kerosene-based. However, potential problems regarding security of supply, climate change and increasing cost are becoming more significant, exacerbated by the rapidly growing demand from the aviation sector. Biofuels are considered one of the most suitable alternatives to petrochemical-based fuels in the aviation industry in the short to medium term, since blends of biofuel and kerosene provide a good balance of properties currently required from an aviation fuel. Experimental studies at a variety of stoichiometries using a flat flame burner with kerosene and kerosene/biofuel blends have been performed with product analysis by gas sampling and laser induced fluorescence detection of OH, CO and CO2. These studies have been complemented by modelling using the PREMIX module of Chemkin to provide insights into and to validate combined models describing the oxidation chemistry of surrogate fuels depicting kerosene, fatty acid methyl ester biofuels and Fischer-Tropsch derived fuels. Sensitivity analysis has identified important reactions within these schemes which where appropriate have been investigated by molecular modelling techniques available within GAUSSIAN 03.

The characteristics of a boundary layer from the semi-circular leading edge of a flat plate has been investigated for two levels of stream turbulence (Tu = 0.5% and 7.7%) in a low-speed wind tunnel. Measurements of velocity and surface pressure were made along with a planar PIV to visualize flow structures for varying turbulence levels at a Reynolds number of 25000 (based on the leading edge diameter). At low stream turbulence the measurements reveal flow undergoes separation in the vicinity of leading-edge with reattachment in the downstream. Velocity spectra illustrates that the separated shear layer is laminar up to 20% of separation length and then the perturbations are amplified in the second half attributing to breakdown and reattachment. It is also evident that the shear layer is inviscidly unstable and the predominant shedding frequency when normalised with respect to the momentum thickness at separation shows a good agreement with previous studies. The bubble length is highly susceptible to change in Tu depicting an attached layer which grows into a fully turbulent profile at high Tu. Here, the spectra for an attached layer depicts a turbulent-like flow with band of frequencies from the beginning.

Streszczenie:
The present study addresses a detailed experimental and numerical investigation on the impact of water dropletson smooth heated surfaces. High-speed infrared thermography is combined with high-speed imaging to couple the heat transfer and fluid dynamic processes occurring at droplet impact. Droplet spreading (e.g. spreading ratio) and detailed surface temperature fields are then evaluated in time and compared with the numerically predicted results. The numerical reproduction of the phenomena was conducted using an enhanced version of a VOF- based solver of OpenFOAM previously developed, which was further modified to account for conjugate heat transfer between the solid and fluid domains, focusing only on the sensible heat removed during droplet spreading. An excellent agreement is observed between the temporal evolution of the experimentally measured and the numerically predicted spreading factors (differences between the experimental and numerical values were always lower than 3.4%). The numerical and experimental dimensionless surface temperature profiles along the droplet radius were also in good agreement, depicting a maximum difference of 0.19. Deeper analysis coupling fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes was also performed, evidencing a strong correlation between maximum and minimum temperature values and heat transfer coefficients with the vorticity fields in the lamella, which lead to particular mixing processes in the boundary layer region. The correlation between the resulted temperature fields and the droplet dynamics was obtained by assuming a relation between the vorticity and the local heat transfer coefficient, in the first fluid cell i.e. near the liquid-solid interface. The two measured fields revealed that local maxima and minima in the vorticity corresponded to spatially shifted local minima and maxima in the heat transfer coefficient, at all stages of the droplet spreading. This was particularly clear in the rim region, which therefore should be considered in future droplet spreading models.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.5024

Streszczenie:
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is an industrially-important and widely used amorphous thermoplastic on which billions of dollars are spent annually in USA. Its applications cover impact-mitigation, infrastructural and laboratory piping systems, sports goods, musical instruments, automotive trim components and bumper bars, medical devices, enclosures, protective headgear, marine craft, luggage, domestic appliances, toys, consumer goods, edgings for industrial goods, etc. Its use to contain impact damage is primary; hence continued research in this area is warranted. The novelty and contribution of this work lies in its employment of more deeply insightful parameters and methods of characterization in acoustic emission and ultrasonics, as well as advanced optical microstructural characterization with sophisticated instrumentation, on one hand, and the wider correlations and conclusions now made possible by these means. In the work which this paper reports, the impact response behavior of ABS material under various levels of impact energy was investigated using results obtained from the mechanical test, and parameters obtained from non-destructive test methods such as Acoustic Emission (AE), Ultrasonics, and Optical Inspection. The ABS plates were impacted by a hemispherical steel projectile in a drop-weight impact tester. Two AE sensors were placed on the surfaces of ABS plates during the impact tests. After the impact tests were completed, ultrasonic C-Scan investigation of the damaged areas was also carried out, and sections were inspected under the microscope. Correlations between damage areas and various parameters of the non-destructive diagnostic test methods utilized were explored. ABS is one of the most highly impact-resistant materials utilized in industry. Its characterization under impact is therefore very important, in order to devise ways of enhancing properties that would make the material or structures made from it, better in service. In this work, plate samples of rectangular shape were subjected to central impacts from a spherical impactor released from various heights. It is of interest to know how the impact propagates through the plate thickness, and how the microstructure is affected from point to point, both laterally and depth-wise. The issues of energy transfer and dissipation are significant in terms of the effectiveness of the material as an impact deadener. Three non-destructive methods are utilized in this work for comprehensiveness and effectiveness. The AE approach is broadly divisible into two — classical, and transient. The former has dozens of descriptive parameters per each of the three dimensions, while the latter, which is based on the waveform and its several possible transforms, adds even many more possibilities. Thus, characterization in AE is particularly rich, and, when a sufficient number of appropriate parameters are utilized, has a very high probability of correctly depicting what is really going on in the material or structure under inspection. The ultrasonic scan reveals in color-code the variation of the material homogeneity throughout the scanned space, which, in each case, covered the whole plate. This normally provides a good picture of damage and its intensity variation in the test piece. The microstructure of selected parts of the test pieces before and after impact was inspected with a violet laser microscope. In this instrument, reflecting light from the white light source is detected with a color CCD camera. This camera obtains color information at the peak (focal point) detected with the laser light source on a pixel basis, thus enabling a real color examination, which SEMs cannot do. This instrument also uses a pin hole confocal optical system which enables high accuracy measurement and high definition examination by eliminating reflecting light from points other than the peak. The results obtained showed clear relationships between energy and geometrical and material metrics of damage through the damage zone and shed more light on possible pathways to the desired enhancement of impact resistance in this case.
