Streszczenie:
The work presented in this dissertation investigates techniques for robot Learning from Demonstration (LFD). LFD is a well established approach where the robot is to learn from a set of demonstrations. The dissertation focuses on LFD where a human teacher demonstrates a behavior by controlling the robot via teleoperation. After demonstration, the robot should be able to reproduce the demonstrated behavior under varying conditions. In particular, the dissertation investigates techniques where previous behavioral knowledge is used as bias for generalization of demonstrations. The primary contribution of this work is the development and evaluation of a semi-reactive approach to LFD called Predictive Sequence Learning (PSL). PSL has many interesting properties applied as a learning algorithm for robots. Few assumptions are introduced and little task-specific configuration is needed. PSL can be seen as a variable-order Markov model that progressively builds up the ability to predict or simulate future sensory-motor events, given a history of past events. The knowledge base generated during learning can be used to control the robot, such that the demonstrated behavior is reproduced. The same knowledge base can also be used to recognize an on-going behavior by comparing predicted sensor states with actual observations. Behavior recognition is an important part of LFD, both as a way to communicate with the human user and as a technique that allows the robot to use previous knowledge as parts of new, more complex, controllers. In addition to the work on PSL, this dissertation provides a broad discussion on representation, recognition, and learning of robot behavior. LFD-related concepts such as demonstration, repetition, goal, and behavior are defined and analyzed, with focus on how bias is introduced by the use of behavior primitives. This analysis results in a formalism where LFD is described as transitions between information spaces. Assuming that the behavior recognition problem is partly solved, ways to deal with remaining ambiguities in the interpretation of a demonstration are proposed. The evaluation of PSL shows that the algorithm can efficiently learn and reproduce simple behaviors. The algorithm is able to generalize to previously unseen situations while maintaining the reactive properties of the system. As the complexity of the demonstrated behavior increases, knowledge of one part of the behavior sometimes interferes with knowledge of another parts. As a result, different situations with similar sensory-motor interactions are sometimes confused and the robot fails to reproduce the behavior. One way to handle these issues is to introduce a context layer that can support PSL by providing bias for predictions. Parts of the knowledge base that appear to fit the present context are highlighted, while other parts are inhibited. Which context should be active is continually re-evaluated using behavior recognition. This technique takes inspiration from several neurocomputational models that describe parts of the human brain as a hierarchical prediction system. With behavior recognition active, continually selecting the most suitable context for the present situation, the problem of knowledge interference is significantly reduced and the robot can successfully reproduce also more complex behaviors.

Children with Tourette Syndrome (CWTS) frequently exhibit a high prevalence of disfluent speech behaviors which are often labeled stuttering. The present study analyzed the fluency characteristics of CWTS, in comparison to children who stutter (CWS) and typically developing peers (TDP). It was predicted that CWTS would be less fluent than TDP but more fluent than CWS. A related purpose was to explore whether differences existed in the pattern of disfluencies demonstrated by these groups. To this end, it was predicted that CWTS would demonstrate significantly lower proportions of stuttering-like disfluencies than CWS and significantly higher proportions of stuttering-like disfluencies than TDP. Participants included eight CWTS, eight CWS and eight TDP. Speech samples, collected during a narrative story telling task, were analyzed to determine whether significant differences in the type and frequency of disfluencies were evident between the groups. Results revealed that CWTS were significantly more fluent than CWS and that CWTS produced significantly lower proportions of stuttering-like disfluencies than CWS. Although not statistically significant, CWTS were twice as disfluent as TDP and CWTS produced significantly higher proportions of stuttering-like disfluencies than TDP. These findings confirmed that CWTS present with an atypical disfluency pattern which can be differentiated from that of CWS and TDP based on the total disfluency level and the proportion of stuttering-like disfluencies.

analyze skill progression in MIT App Inventor, an open, online learning environment with over 4.7 million users and 14.9 million projects/apps created. My objective is to understand how people learn computational thinking concepts while creating mobile applications with App Inventor. In particular, I am interested in the relationship between the development of sophistication in using App Inventor functionality and the development of sophistication in using computational thinking concepts as learners create more apps. I take steps towards this objective by modeling the demonstrated sophistication of a user along two dimensions: breadth and depth of capability. Given a sample of 10,571 random users who have each created at least 20 projects, I analyze the relationship between demonstrating domain-specific skills by using App Inventor functionality and generalizable skills by using computational thinking concepts. I cluster similar users and compare differences in using computational concepts. My findings indicate a common pattern of expanding breadth of capability by using new skills over the first 10 projects, then developing depth of capability by using previously introduced skills to build more sophisticated apps. From analyzing the clustered users, I order computational concepts by perceived complexity. This concept complexity measure is relative to how users interact with components. I also identify differences in learning computational concepts using App Inventor when compared to learning with a text-based programming language such as Java. In particular, statements (produce action) and expressions (produce value) are separate blocks because they have different connections with other blocks in App Inventor's visual programming language. This may result in different perceptions of computational concepts when compared to perceptions from using a text-based programming language, as statements are used more frequently in App Inventor than expressions. This work has implications to enable future computer science curriculum to better leverage App Inventor's blocks-based programming language and events-based model to offer more personalized guidance and learning resources to those who learn App Inventor without an instructor.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to document the compositional process of the American composer, Rene Clausen (b. 1953). The writer conducted three days of interviews with Dr. Clausen to discuss his compositional process in selected choral works. The discussion included Clausen's "creative impetus," and "compositional approach" to the elements of text, harmony, rhythm, melody and texture. The writer examined Clausen's thirty-three published choral works. Three works representative of his choral output were selected: "All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord" (1981); "0 Vos Omnes" (1986); and "Whispers of Heavenly Death" (1993). These works were selected upon the composer's recommendation as pieces which are representative of his choral style.Clausen's "creative impetus," his musical influences and motivation, form what he terms "deep background." This material, some learned, but most absorbed through various musical experiences and influences, is placed into a "big bin" from which Clausen draws when making compositional decisions. The text is the genesis of Clausen's process. When selecting texts, Clausen looks for ones that will evoke certain colors, nuances, or images.Clausen's second step is to absorb the meaning of that text. During this important absorption process Clausen develops an idea of what the character of the piece will be.The third step is the emergent process: generating thoughts about thematic material, intermittent ideas, textures, and transitional material which will be presented. Clausen manipulates the elements of harmony, rhythm, melody and texture to express the forms and images present in the text.An examination of Clausen's compositional approach to the following elements was conducted: HarmonyClausen's approach is extended diatonicism with traditional harmonic movement leading toward goal oriented harmony.RhythmClausen uses a variety of rhythmic approaches to express the text: mixed and asymmetrical meter, free unmeasured rhythm, and dove-tailing sections rhythm and metered music. MelodyClausen's approach is based upon the parameters within which he is writing and on the imagery present in the text. TextureClausen's approach is based on two aspects: the level of difficulty or level for which the piece is written and the images expressed in the text.

Few musicians are familiar with the works of American composer, Horatio Parker (1863-1919), and those who know him likely are familiar only with his church music. This dissertation aims to bring attention to Parker and his secular choral output, specifically his cantatas. The author has chosen three representative examples of his dramatic secular works for choir and orchestra in order to examine the development of Parker's compositional style. They are The Ballad of a Knight and His Daughter (1884), Dream-King and His Love (1891), and A Star Song (1901). After a brief biography, the author pays particular attention to Parker's increasing use of thematic elements as well as the harmonic language and formal construction of the selected works. A course of development is demonstrated highlighting Parker's increasingly sophisticated use of themes and more chromatic harmonic language.

Streszczenie:

This study’s purpose is to explore grit attributes California urban school superintendents demonstrated. The literature review revealed 5 grit attributes: courage, conscientiousness, endurance toward long-term goals, optimism and resilience, and excellence over perfection. There is scant scholarly research connecting urban school superintendents to the 5 grit attributes and understanding grit’s 5 attributes school district leaders reflected is valuable to the industry and the profession.

This research implemented a qualitative methodology. Following an extensive review of the literature, a panel of experts developed and reviewed research questions to establish validity. The data collected were gathered from publicly available and accessible published texts regarding superintendents from 7 California urban school districts. Corresponding text from the data sources were reviewed and compared with the grit attributes in the theoretical framework in order to code for themes. The themes were reviewed for alignment to the 5 attributes of grit theory that formed this study’s conceptual framework. Limitations included that there was no interaction with superintendents in this study as only publicly available information served as data, and urban school districts in only 1 state were represented in this study.

Findings based on publicly accessed information revealed 15 practices of demonstrating grit in 5 categories: 2 practices demonstrating the attribute of courage; 3 practices demonstrating the attribute of conscientiousness; 5 practices demonstrating the attribute of endurance toward long-term goals; 3 practices demonstrating the attribute of optimism and resilience; and 2 practices demonstrating the attribute of excellence over perfection. In addition to correlating practices with the 5 attributes of grit theory, more than 70 authors supported the 4 theoretical components.

The results of the study provide information that can assist leaders, persons providing professional development, and policymakers in education. The data in this study support the relationship of the grit attributes as school superintendents in California urban settings demonstrated. This research adds to the literature regarding the disciplines of educational leadership, organizational leadership, and positive psychology in organizations, including topics related to persistence and resiliency studies. Additionally, the results of this study add to the existing body of literature specifically related to grit theories.

Streszczenie:
Nanopatterning of biomolecules on functionalized surfaces offers an excellent route for ultrasensitive protein immobilization, for interaction measurements, and for the fabrication of devices such as protein nanoarrays. An improved understanding of the physics and chemistry underlying the device properties and the recognition process is necessary for performance optimization. This is especially important for the recognition and immobilization of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), like the prion protein (PrP), a partial IDP, whose folding and stability may be influenced by local environment and confinement. Atomic force microscopy allows for both highly controllable nanolithography and for sensitive and accurate direct detection, via precise topographic measurements on ultra-flat surfaces, of protein interactions in a liquid environment, thus different environmental parameters affecting the biorecognition phenomenon can be investigated in situ. Using nanografting, a tip-induced lithographic technique, and an affinity immobilization strategy based on two different histidine tagged antibodies, with high nM affinity for two different regions of PrP, we successfully demonstrated the immobilization of recombinant mouse PrP onto nanostructured surfaces, in two different orientations. Clear discrimination of the two molecular orientations was shown by differential height (i.e. topographic) measurements, allowing for the estimation of binding parameters and the full characterization of the nanoscale biorecognition process. Our work opens the way to several high sensitivity diagnostic applications and, by controlling PrP orientation, allows for the investigation of unconventional interactions with partially folded proteins, and may serve as a platform for protein misfolding and refolding studies on PrP and other thermodynamically unstable, fibril forming, proteins.

Music Education
Ph.D.
The purpose of this research was to investigate how adults identify music behaviors of young children in play-based early childhood settings. The research questions were (1) Are there statistically significant effects of training, parental status, or direction condition on the number of individual musical acts identified by adults? (2) How does response latency vary based on training, parental status, and direction condition? (3) Of the music acts identified by the subjects, what types of music acts are identified as consensus acts (those identified by 75% of subjects or more within any three-second window)? and, (4) How do consensus acts differ with regard to type, frequency, and difficulty? Seventy-two adults (24 child development teachers, 24 early childhood music teachers, and 24 musicians) participated in the study. Of the 24 subjects in each group, half were parents, and half were nonparents. Subjects were randomly assigned equally to two direction conditions: Meaningful Direction Condition and Intentional Direction Condition. Subjects watched video of young children (five to fifteen months old) and adults interacting musically in a play-based early childhood setting. Subjects in the Meaningful Direction Condition pressed the space bar on a computer when they thought any child in the video demonstrated a meaningfully musical behavior; subjects in the Intentional Direction Condition pressed the space bar when they thought any child in the video demonstrated an intentionally musical behavior. When each subject pressed the space bar, a computer program recorded time stamp data. Subjects in the Early Childhood Music Teacher (ECMT) group identified significantly more music behaviors than subjects in the Child Development Teacher (CDT) group and the Musician group. There were no significant differences in the total number of music behaviors identified according to parental status or direction condition. Subjects in the ECMT group agreed statistically significantly more often than adults in the CDT group and the Musician group that behaviors demonstrated by children in the video were music behaviors. Adults in the Parent group agreed statistically significantly more often than adults in the Nonparent group that behaviors demonstrated by children in the video were music behaviors. When adults identify consensus acts, young children's music behaviors contain common features: beat-related movements and vocalizations. Adults in the ECMT group agreed significantly more often than adults in the CDT group and the Musician group that vocalizations demonstrated by young children were music behaviors. Adult ability to identify music behaviors as measured in this study is dependent upon musical training and experience, but not solely. Specialized early childhood music pedagogy may help adults identify behaviors (especially vocalizations) demonstrated by young children as music.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the behavior of a specific group of educational leaders, to determine the presence of masculine, feminine, and androgynous qualities, and to relate these specific qualities to their performance ratings. The researcher examined current literature relating to the concept of androgyny in several areas.;Method. The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) was administered to a sample of 59 school administrators from one school system. The scoring of the BSRI resulted in four separate categories: feminine, masculine, androgynous, and undifferentiated. The school system's evaluator provided a rating (exceptional, average, or weak) of the 59 principals in six areas. Six hypotheses were developed in relation to the purpose of the study: (1) A greater percentage of the female school principals will receive "androgynous" ratings on the Bem Sex-Role Inventory than will male school principals. (2) A greater percentage of the male school principals will receive "masculine" ratings on the BSRI than will female school principals; a greater percentage of the female school principals will receive "feminine" ratings on the BSRI than will male school principals. (3) More of the school principals who receive "undifferentiated" ratings on the BSRI will be males. (4) The school system's evaluator will rate the "masculine" school principals higher in building management and administrative procedures and policy than those who are "feminine" or "undifferentiated." (5) The school system's evaluator will rate the "feminine" school principals higher in public relations, staff relations, and personal qualities than those who are "masculine" or "undifferentiated." (6) The school system's evaluator will rate the "androgynous" school principals higher in building management, administrative procedures and policy, public relations, staff relations, personal qualities, and instructional program than those who are "masculine," "undifferentiated," or "feminine.".;Results. An analysis of the data formed the basis for conclusions and recommendations relating to differences between sex-role classifications and performance of duties as demonstrated by the formal evaluation procedure. The findings supported the first five hypotheses, although the "androgynous" administrators were not rated as high in those areas in which the "masculine" or "feminine" administrators excelled. Implications for future research were discussed.

Streszczenie:
The claustrum is a much neglected nucleus in the brain, whose fuction remains unknown to date. Yet, based on the extensive reciprocal connections it shares with virtually all functional regions of cortex, it most likely serves a far from meaningless purpose. Current hypotheses propose a role in perceptual binding by synchronization of cortical activity. These hypotheses come with a number of assumptions, such as a wide network of connections intrinsic to the claustrum. In this context, gap junctions have been suggested as a means to interconnect portions of the claustrim and to synchronize incoming cortical activity. Neuronal gap junctions have been shown to be involved in supporting synchronous activity and oscillations in areas such as the hippocampus, making them a feasible candidate for such a mechanism in the claustrum. While gap junctions have been described in many areas of the brain, they have not been observed in the claustrum prior to the present study. Set aginst this background, the presence of gap junctions in the claustrum was investigated in this thesis. To this end, an immunohistochemical approach was first used to localize the gap junction protein connexin 36. Once a protocol was established, a small population of connexin 36 expressin neurons was identified in the posterior half of the dorsomedial aspect of the ventral claustrum (also known as the endopiriform nucleus). However, no further labeling was observed throughout the rest of the claustrum. These results were supported by electron microscopy, as putative gap junctions were exclusively observed in an area corresponding to where connexin 36 expression was found. These results represent the first steps in confirming the presenceof the hypothesized gap junction network in the claustrum. Yet, it could be argued that their limited occurrence in both number and location are not entirely in line with current hypotheses predicting a wide gap junction network common to the entire claustrum.

Streszczenie:

There was need for additional research on humility leadership characteristics to provide clarity on employee charitable giving and volunteering at work in support of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The dissertation study attempted to relate a theoretical framework of humility to leaders demonstrating humility characteristics within a company that provides charitable giving and volunteering opportunities for employees. The problem addressed was the lack of full understanding of the correlation between leaders demonstrating humility characteristics and employee charitable giving and volunteering. A predictive research model was used for this quantitative study. The validated scale of humility was provided to employees of a northwestern Wisconsin company to rate leader-demonstrated humility characteristics on a 5-point Likert-type scale. Participants agreed or strongly agreed supervisors demonstrated each of the humility characteristics. Multiple regression analysis was performed to test the null hypotheses. Pearson correlations were performed to test correlations between the independent and dependent variables. Findings showed significant correlations between each of the characteristics and employee charitable giving; however, a combination of the six dimensions showed a weak correlation to employee giving. Correlations between two of the six characteristics and employee charitable volunteering were significant; the other four characteristics were not significant in correlation. Multiple regression was conducted to examine to what extent the humility characteristic variables predicted employee giving and volunteering. In combination, the six dimensions provided a very weak statistical correlation and did not significantly predict employee volunteering, r2 = .04, F(6, 226) = 1.35, p > .05. The combination of the six dimensions of the leadership humility characteristics did statistically significantly predict employee giving and it explained 9% of the variance of employee giving, r2 = .09, F(6, 226) = 3.60, p = .002. However, no single predictor was statistically significant, so the model is limited in terms of practical significance. Recommendations for future research include surveying employees of companies of varying size, geographical location, and culture. Focused analyses on gender or age might show different correlations and predictive outcomes. Likewise, a qualitative study might allow for additional information to be discovered. For practitioners, the rationale for this study was to analyze data that might benefit leaders of companies with CSR missions or of social welfare agencies. For researchers, the rationale for this study was to build on existing theory since the review of available literature revealed inconclusive data as to what consistently motivates employees to participate in charitable giving and volunteering at work.

Streszczenie:
One of the musical conductor's fundamental responsibilities is leading others to interpret and create music in a manner that was unfamiliar, unimagined, or inconceivable prior to the rehearsal experience. Regardless of the level or type of musical ensemble being conducted, each person within that ensemble possesses a unique perception of the musical, pedagogical, and stylistic elements, which must be compromised—if not completely abandoned in some instances—in the process of creating a cohesive musical ensemble. In addition to personal musical preparation and leadership, conductors are also responsible for leading, managing, and encouraging the carrying out of necessary administrative details that directly affect the desired musical product, such as resource management and staff development. This study begins by creating the general profile of an ideal leader based on theories common to numerous leadership and management scholars. Then, utilizing the established profile of the ideal leader, Robert Shaw's leadership behaviors and administrative practices were studied, documented, and organized into categories that correspond with those found in the profile of the ideal leader, providing an in-depth profile of Shaw's character, convictions, and competence, both as a human being and as a musician.Robert Shaw was not only an exceptional musician, but also an accomplished leader and manager of multifaceted musical organizations. As a result, Shaw's time was not only occupied with musical study and preparation, but he was equally aware of the administrative and organizational details necessary for the music to reach its highest potential. As is true with all successful leaders, Shaw delegated many duties and responsibilities to others, such as Nola Frink, Charles McKay, and Nick Jones. Even so, he maintained an acute awareness of the multitude of tasks being performed under his aegis. Also a vital leader within his local community, Shaw's leadership reached far beyond the realm of conducting. Frequently speaking in churches, social clubs, and graduation ceremonies, he was an activist for the arts, civil rights, and contemporary music throughout his life.

This thesis demonstrates that Calvin Coolidge applied a philosophy of limited government to his executive decisions concerning two domestic issues, Prohibition and agricultural policy. In both matters, various groups attempted to pressure Coolidge into permanently increasing the scope of the federal government's activities. Coolidge refused to comply with their demands and maintained his belief in the benefits of a federal government that limited itself to minimal activism by mediating the disputes of conflicting interest groups. Through both Prohibition and the agricultural problem, Coolidge exhibited his effectiveness in handling divisive political issues while maintaining his philosophy of limited government. Overall, this thesis contributes to the scholarly revisionism of Coolidge.

Students can often recognize words in print that they are not able to spell correctly. Despite a strong relationship between reading and spelling, students' performances on reading and spelling tasks often demonstrate significant differences in word accuracy and errors. The research investigated four aspects of spelling as developmental word knowledge. First, the research examined the third graders performances on a standardized spelling test and qualitative word knowledge inventory, and indicated that as students' spelling scores increased so did their word knowledge scores. Next, the study investigated the relationship of word knowledge development across four reading and spelling tasks. Using a repeated- measures design the third graders' performances and orthographic errors on an instructional - level, word knowledge inventory list were examined. An analysis of variance indicated that students' performances on the reading tasks were significantly better than their performances on the spelling tasks. A descriptive error analysis was employed to examine the developmental levels of the demonstrated errors across tasks and indicated that there was a significant task effect on the student's level of word knowledge. Further qualitative analysis of the reading and spelling errors of students revealed that the errors involved similar orthographic features across the tasks. Finally, the investigation explored the third grade teachers' rating of their students' spelling achievement and word knowledge. The data indicated that the ratings were significantly related to the students' actual performances in spelling achievement and word knowledge, but not adequate for instructional decisions. The findings suggested three pertinent considerations that need to be addressed in any analysis of reading and spelling errors. First, that the sample of reading and spelling errors needs to large enough be representative of their word knowledge development. Second, an error analysis that includes errors from different linguistic tasks, needs to consider the functional levels for each type of task. Further, the error analysis revealed that students use a combination of strategies, not only orthographic cues to both read and spell words.

Streszczenie:
In the collaborative integration of the components in Brazilian folk music language and of western art music style, Villa-Lobos' compositional style is unique in reflecting a self-defined method apart from the development of nineteenth century Nationalism. The purpose of this study is to identify the use of the Brazilian nationalistic elements in the music of the Brazilian art music composer Heitor Villa-Lobos as well as to examine his approach of the use of the representative components in his writing for clarinet. The choice of compositions included in this document focuses on the three chamber music works with clarinet in the set of the Chôros: Chôros No. 2 (1924), Chôros, No. 7 (1924), and Quintette en forme de chôros (1928). The Chôros was chosen because these compositions exhibit the maturity of Villa-Lobos' writing style of Brazilian nationalistic language. This study also discusses the historical background of traditional choro music as a prominent style in Brazilian popular music during the 1920s and analyzes how this genre influenced the set of Villa-Lobos' Chôros.

Streszczenie:
Graph theory is a mathematical study of objects and their pairwise relations, known as nodes and edges respectively. The birth of graph theory is often considered to take place in 1736 when the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler tried to solve a routing problem involving seven bridges of Königsberg in Prussia. In more recent times, graph theory has caught the attention of companies from all types of industries due to its power of modelling and analysing exceptionally large networks. This thesis investigates the usage of graph theory in the energy sector for a utility company, in particular Fortum whose activities consist of, but not limited to, production and distribution of electricity and heat. The output of the thesis is a wide overview of graph-theoretic concepts and their practical applications, as well as a study of a use-case where some concepts are put into deeper analysis. The chosen use-case within the scope of this thesis is feature selection - a process for reducing the number of features, also known as input variables, typically before a regression model is built to avoid overfitting and increase model interpretability. Five graph-based feature selection methods with different points of view are studied. Experiments are conducted on realistic data sets with many features to verify the legitimacy of the methods. One of the data sets is owned by Fortum and used for forecasting the electricity price, among other important quantities. The obtained results look promising according to several evaluation metrics and can be used by Fortum as a support tool to develop prediction models. In general, a utility company can likely take advantage graph theory in many ways and add value to their business with enriched mathematical knowledge.

[Thomas] Vernon Griffiths (1894-1985) was one of five Englishmen appointed to influential positions in New Zealand music education during the 1920s. As Britons, Griffiths and his colleagues believed it to be appropriate to preach and practise the ideas and methods in which they themselves had been schooled, given that New Zealand was, until post-1945, firmly aligned to the “mother country”, Britain. Indeed, Britain was the prototype of the parental model in all aspects of life, including music education, as systems of thought and actual customs were transported to New Zealand and were reinforced within the Dominion. During his working life in New Zealand (1927-1961), Vernon Griffiths was appointed to positions of importance in New Zealand music education. What, then, were the actual ideas and beliefs that he expressed? How did they emerge in practical form? In what ways did he address the specific needs of the Dominion which he viewed as a culturally-developing country? Questions such as these lie behind this study of Vernon Griffiths' philosophies, using the materials preserved by Griffiths in his collected papers to determine the ideas and beliefs he held as essential in his personal philosophy during the thirty-five years of his career. Vernon Griffiths' own writings and appropriate materials from his papers are evaluated within three broad themes - music in life, music in education and music in New Zealand. To provide background and context, the opening chapters commence with a review of the literature pertaining to Griffiths, including assessments of his character, attitudes and contribution to music education, and brief descriptions of the journal Music in New Zealand, his book An experiment in school music-making, recorded sound archives and the primary source material - the Vernon Griffiths Papers. This is followed by a biographical account which furnishes details of his life, from his birth in England in 1894 and his arrival in the Dominion in February 1927, to his eventual retirement in 1961. The various sources of his "inspiration" are examined, and the educational contexts from which he emerged and into which he entered and to which he contributed are outlined in order to place him and his work as a music educator into context. While the focus of this study is an attempt to construct Vernon Griffiths' own philosophy based on his own writings and statements, the concluding chapter compares his philosophy to a model of the universals of music education and highlights the points of concurrence between the two systems. A postscript provides a summary of views of a sample of Vernon Griffiths' former students and practitioners as to his influence on their work in music and music education.

Streszczenie:

The costs associated with attending a community college have increased over the years, not unlike most sectors within higher education (Mitchell & Leachman, 2015). As such, community college students often find borrowing student loans a necessity in order to seek the academic credential they intend (McKinney & Backscheider Burridge, 2015). In recent years, it is community college students who stop or drop out without completing an academic credential, with little increased earning potential, who are at high risk of defaulting on their student loan balance (McKinney & Backscheider Burridge, 2015). While enrolled in college, these students are at-risk for completing a degree and demonstrate risky borrowing behaviors along the way, both a recipe for increased default and a life less improved, contrary to the promise of higher education (Mettler, 2014). There is little research on the perceptions of students who represent the community college student loan borrower (Cho, Xu, & Kiss, 2015); therefore, this qualitative study was designed to investigate the perceptions of the participants regarding their academic progress and their obligations to their federal loans as viewed through the lens of student choice (Perna, 2006). Interviews with student loan borrowers at a Midwest community college were conducted. The students in this study discussed their perceptions and understandings, and multiple themes emerged as issues with which they were confronted. Overall, the findings imply changes to the structure and delivery of information necessary for student loan borrowers needs modifying. These findings imply students experience a disconnect between information presented to them and recall of the information when asked. Taken as a whole, these findings may be useful to practitioners and policy makers as student loan borrowing behaviors are examined.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Abstract Purpose This study is designed to determine whether managed care has had an influence on the number and distribution of procedures with demonstrated volume and outcome endogeneity in Florida healthcare markets; in addition, methods are developed to determine which measures of managed care activity best predict the impact of managed care on surgical procedure utiliation. Rationale A shift in surgical procedure volume on the basis of preferred provider arrangements has the potential to redistribute surgical procedures within hospital markets. The surgical procedures for which such a distribution could have the greatest impact on population health are those for which the volume of cases performed has a strong inverse influence on the outcomes observed. A shift in high risk surgical procedures to low volume hospitals could potentially reduce the number of cases performed at high volume centers and increase cases at low volume centers, adversely impacting quality in both. Methods A retrospective population based cohort design is used to capitalize on the variability among Florida metropolitan statistical areas between 1995 and 1999, a period which captured the full business life cycle of managed care plans in Florida. Multiple regression models are used to measure the impact of changes in managed care activity as measured by penetration, index of competition and consolidation on the change in the number and distribution of seven procedures for which volume is associated with patient outcome, controlling for socio-demographic and market factors known to influence surgical procedure utilization. Difference scores derived for each of the model variables were used to measure change from the baseline in 1995 to 1999. Post hoc analysis of the count data models was performed using the cases from all study years in a log linear generalized estimating equation to provide validation of the difference score approach. Key Findings Study procedure volume increased over the period, and remained a consistent proportion of the total inpatient surgical procedure volume. Procedure rate remained stable over the study period with substantial small area variation. Change in managed care concentration was consistently and negatively associated with procedure volume at both the MSA (&betaâ&beta = -19.67; p = 0.0489) and hospital level (&betaâ&beta = -4.088; p = 0.0027).Change in the total population and the number of specialty surgeons had a substantial, consistent and positive relationship to change in procedure volume at both the market and hospital level. The change in the index of competition was positively associated with change in hospital market share (&betaâ&beta = 0.1005; p = 0.05); whereas, neither change in managed care penetration nor change in managed care index of competition was predictive of change in procedure volume at the market level. The managed care variables were not correlated when difference scores were tested providing evidence that the managed care variables measure different constructs and behave differently. Implications As markets for managed care became more concentrated, the number of surgical procedures with volume and outcome endogeneity declined; the specific reasons for the observed decline require additional study. Competitive managed care markets have a favorable impact on hospital market share for these high risk, high margin procedures. Studies of managed care require consideration of the stage of managed care development in order to understand its influence and the use of difference scores as a method to measure change over time has substantial potential for the study of health care markets.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the emerging field of electronic distance education CEDE) so as to improve and enhance the delivery of educational programs utilizing EDE. The study was conducted at Utah State University, using an EDE-method (COM-NET) as the research setting. Thirty-seven instructors taught 45 courses over the COM-NET system from Fall quarter, 1985 through Summer quarter, 1986. The design of this study was based upon simple correlation coefficient matrices and the subsequent prediction models of multiple regression analysis. Contextual data were gathered from a solicited instructor self-reporting instrument. The objective was to identify potential relationships between teaching styles and instructional utilities employed on student satisfaction and student performance in an EDE-based learning system. Teaching style data were gathered using the Gregorc Style Delineator (GSD). Instructional utilities data were gathered using the Instructional Utilities Inventory (IUI). Student satisfaction was measured using the USU course evaluation form and student performance assessments were made by using mean grades for those courses taught via COM-NET during the time period of concern in this study. The Abstract/Random teaching style had an effect on student satisfaction. Discovery techniques had an effect on student performance. The Abstract/Random and the Abstract/Sequential teaching styles utilized abstract devices. Instructors were generally enthusiastic about their COM-NET teaching experience. The need for improved on-campus administrative awareness and support in terms of released time and money were identified as measures to improve the system. Instructional flexibility was stressed as important. The COM-NET students performed as well as on-campus students, due in part to their maturity and experiences. It was concluded that instructional presentations have a significant effect on student outcomes. Given the emerging EDE methods more study is necessary to determine precise instructional procedures which result in improved student performances when learning via an EDE system.
