Research on religion and death anxiety has produced many contradictory findings. These conflicting findings arise, in part, from inadequacies in the measurement of religion as well as problems with the way the data have been analyzed. The purpose of the current study is to develop and empirically evaluate a conceptual model that contains the following core hypotheses: (a) People who go to church more often will receive more spiritual support from fellow church members (spiritual support is assistance provided by coreligionists for the explicit purpose of increasing the religious beliefs and practices of the recipient). (b) Individuals who receive more spiritual support will be more likely to trust God. (c) Those who trust God more deeply will be more likely to feel forgiven by Him. (d) People who feel forgiven by God will experience less death anxiety. Findings from a recent nationwide survey provide support for each hypothesis.

PROGRAMA DE DOUTORADO SANDUÍCHE NO EXTERIOR
Esta tese é uma reflexão sobre a possibilidade de um discurso sobre a religiosidade a partir da morte de Deus. Procurei escavar interpretações a respeito da sentença Deus está morto!, presente nos aforismos 125 e 343, de A gaia ciência, de Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) e confrontei-as com as ressonâncias desta proclamação na obra do filósofo francês Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973). Sobre os sentidos interpretativos da assertiva nietzschiana, apresento três aspectos fundamentais do Deus assassinado, nomeadamente: (a) o Deus metafísico; (b) o Deus moral; (c) o Deus cristão. Os textos de Marcel analisados na tese apontam a acolhida e a ressignificação do vaticínio nietzschiano. Nessa acolhida, as noções de drama, situação, universal concreto, transcendência e intersubjetividade mereceram especial cuidado investigativo. Esta última, calcada na relação eu-tu, constitui-se como verdadeira condição de possibilidade de abertura ao outro enquanto mistério. A partir deste confronto, procurei oferecer uma síntese própria que não é nem nietzschianismo, nem marcelianismo. Uma vez que não se segue como necessário de nossa situação histórica, marcada pelo deicídio, a ilegitimidade da religião, perseverei em repensá-la, ainda que sob aspectos e configurações não usuais. Disto seguiu-se uma reinterpretação de aspectos vários, situados entre metafísica e religiosidade, bem como entre moralidade e religiosidade, o que levou a reflexão sobre alguns desdobramentos éticos e sócio-políticos aí envolvidos.
The present work sets forth a discussion on the possibility of a religious speech following the death of God. It was in my interest to dig for interpretations concerning Friederich Nietzsche s (1844-1900) statement found in The Gay Science s 125th and 343th aforisms - God is dead! - and to compare them to its echoes in Gabriel Marcel s (1889-1973) works. Upon the interpretative meanings to Nietzsche s statement, I present three fundamental aspects to the murdered God, namely: (a) the metaphysical God, (b) the moral God and (c) the christian God. The Marcelian texts analyzed here point out both the reception and ressignifications of Nietzsche s prediction. In this reception, the notions of drama, situation, concrete universe, transcendence and intersubjectivity deserved a very careful analysis. The latter, based on the I-thou relationship, became a real condition for an opening towards the others as some sort of mystery. From this confrontation, I tried to offer my own synthesis that is neither akin to Nietzscheism or Marcelism. Since the ilegitimacy of religion is not a necessary fact on our days, branded by the experience of this deicide, I strived to rethink it, albeit by non usual aspects and configurations. From that followed a reinterpretation of several aspects, situated between metaphysics and religiosity, as well as between morality and religiosity, which lead to the reflexion on some of the ethical and social-political developments that lie within the discussion.

Although the ‘death of God’ theology attracted considerable attention during the 1960s, in recent decades it has fallen into neglect. Nonetheless, the issues raised by the ‘death of God’ theology were important ones and it remains an interesting question whether the ‘death of God’ theologians were able to make substantial contributions to them. This thesis re-examines the work of the ‘death of God’ theologians. It argues that the popular view – that the ‘death of God’ theology represented a common tendency, or movement, towards atheism among certain prominent American Protestant theologians – is mistaken. Through a series of detailed studies of Thomas J.J. Altizer (chapters 3 and 4), William Hamilton (Chapter 5), Paul van Buren (Chapter 6), and Harvey Cox (Chapter 7), the thesis shows not only that the significance of the ‘death of God’ theologians has been widely misinterpreted, but that their work contains a number of features which have been under-emphasised or even overlooked. The aim of the thesis is to provide a more balanced contemporary reading of their work. The work of Altizer receives special attention and a case is made for the view that he should be read as a Protestant mystic of a peculiar sort.

In the short story Novella Greca, in her book: Fior di Passione, 1888, the author M. Serao narrates the true story of Calliope Stavro, the heroine (Calliopi Stavrou in Greek), in Leucade - Santa Maura (Lefkada - Agia Mavra in Greek), an island of the Ionian Sea, in 19th century Greece. At that time, the country was just freed from the Turkish occupation, trying to recover from more than 400 years of slavery and subjugation to the Ottoman Empire. Calliope Stavro represents the woman of her time, imprisoned in the small society of her island, suffocated, asphyxiated, disillusioned and unfulfilled. Thus, she decides to commit suicide not having a way out in her island, which although it is a naturally beautiful place due to its greenery, it is a barren rock �thrown� into the Ionian Sea without any promising future for its inhabitants. Serao realistically exposes the true story of the heroine�s female identity, whose death signifies her suffocation within the patriarchal society of her time. The writer presents the outlets of human existence, the small society of the island, the negative influence of the heroine�s microcosm, which mostly depends on the raisin trade, its production and export, with which almost all the males of the island are preoccupied, since it provided a profitable income in that time. Faced with the crushing reality of her life, the non-existence of love, no romance, male dominance, and indifference, even misogynism, she chooses death, she surrenders to her doomed destiny and the futility of existence, because she is not allowed to live a free life according to her will. Her fatal fall from Lefkata�s cape, where in ancient times there was a temple of god Apollo, god of music, light, and patron of the arts and divination, signifies the death of the gods of Olympus. Their place has been taken by a harsh reality, the revelation of the demands of the human soul, its desires, and its dead ends. Greece will need and still needs a long way to go to find the place it deserves in history, free from patriarchal structures, prejudices, and the impasses that they entail. The story of Calliope Stavro proves in practice the predicament of the female under the patriarchal standards of her era and the unsatisfied desires of the human psyche, which are sacrificed for the sake of survival, most times with unpredictable, unpleasant and unhappy results.

As the locus of the Nemean games, Ancient Nemea was an important Greek cult and festival center, especially during the Archaic period (6th–5th century BC). Examination of excavated faunal materials deriving from “sacred” and “secular” contexts at the site yields clues about the distribution of meat to gods (such as Zeus, the patron deity of the area), to heroes (in this case Opheltes, on whose legendary death the Nemean Games were founded), and to the mortal officials, spectators, and athletes participating in the events at Nemea. As regards “sacrificial” assemblages, most of which consisted of bone remains of burnt offerings as collected from altars and other ritual-type contexts, the data indicate a preference for sheep as the standard sacrificial animal, but show a definite preference for the hind limb sections of the left side in the case of sacrifice to the hero Opheltes, as opposed to the god Zeus. “Secular” deposits show different trends, such as the presence of unburnt bones, or the remains of wild animals and fish, taxa not typically sacrificed in Greek antiquity. Examination of zooarchaeological remains from various contexts at the site, at one level, and across other sites, at a larger level, helps develop a larger more integrated picture of animal use in ancient Greek cult practices.

Hagiographies of old Serbian literature speak of rulers as individuals chosen by God, for the benefit of the people and the country they will rule. Archbishop Danilo, writing about his contemporary, points out that King Milutin surpassed all his predecessors in terms of gender and position in the country. Apart from the typical elements - describing the good deeds of the king, as well as his imposing fundraising endeavors, the peculiarity of this life is reflected in the constant emphasis on God's help to the great king during military campaigns. Regardless of whether the initiator of the conflict was King Milutin himself or the attack on Serbian lands came from the other side, those who opposed the king were punished with a horrible death, thwarted in the endeavor or diplomatically deterred from the original plan. The help that comes from the metaphysical spaces of Good and Truth is at the same time a description of miracles, but the kind of miracle that is less talked about in medieval literature - when the intervention of the Lord punishes, in the already mentioned ways, those who chose the path of evil. Since every attack of others on the Serbian king and the Serbian land is clearly motivated by the invention of the dishonorable, placing King Milutin in opposition to such exponents of reality indirectly speaks of his godliness, correctness of his decisions and actions, but also his orientation towards eschatology.

Abstract Melanoma is one of the most common types of skin cancer that afflicts our society. Although melanoma accounts for 1% of the cases of skin cancer, due to its aggressiveness, it is responsible for most skin cancer-related deaths. Each year, approximately 132 000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, and just in USA an approximate of 7 230 people will die because of it. Early detection can lead to a significant reduction in melanoma death rates. Nowadays, there are various invasive and non-invasive detection methods of skin cancer. A type of non-invasive method uses an infrared thermal imaging camera, which can detect the difference in thermal behavior between healthy and malignant tissue during the thermal recovery process after a cooling stress applied to the skin. Such a thermal behavior can be simulated computationally, with a good approximation to reported case studies. This study proposes a numerical model that takes advantage of infrared thermal imaging to determine the effect of geometry and depth of the lesion with the cooling and recovery process using Design of Experiments (DoE). The results show that diameter and geometric shape of the lesion are the parameters that most influence the thermal response.

Abstract An equation of state model is presented, developed for an H2S-rich field, where the fluid type changes smoothly from gas to oil through a zone with a critical fluid and not through a classical gas-oil contact with a discontinuity in fluid properties. For use in connection with compositional reservoir simulation studies, a depth gradient model has been developed that provides a good representation of the compositional variation with depth, including the depth where the fluid type changes from gas to oil. The depth gradient model considers the influence of both gravity and the vertical temperature gradient on the distribution of the individual components in the fluid column. A depth gradient model that only considers gravity and ignores the temperature gradient will simulate an increasing H2S concentration with depth, while the fluid samples show that the H2S concentration decreases with increasing depth. When the effect of the temperature gradient is included, a good match is obtained of the development of fluid composition, saturation point and GOR with depth.

This study was a diagnostic research, so the content was decomposed according to PIRO : P: Patients diagnosed with sudden death; I: C-reactive protein; R: There is no gold standard for sudden death, and the definition of sudden death varies from literature to literature. The World Health Organization defines sudden death: "Patients who are normally healthy or seemingly healthy die suddenly due to natural diseases in an unexpectedly short period of time." In our study, sudden death is determined by the history, symptoms, physical examination and electrocardiogram results assesed by doctor. If death events were collected from the patients’ medical records, deaths coded using the International Classification of Diseases-9th Revision, codes 410 to 414 for non-SCD and 798.1 for SCD; or the International Classification of Diseases-10th Revision, codes I20 to I25 for non-SCD and I46 for SCD. All deaths registered as sudden deaths were confirmed in interviews with the patient’s physician or family members again. O: sudden death.

Longer life expectancy can affect individuals’ incentives to work, save and marry, net of any changes in their underlying health. We test this hypothesis by using the sudden arrival of a new treatment in 1995 that dramatically increased life expectancy for HIV-infected individuals. We compare the behavioural responses of HIV-infected individuals who were still in good health but who differed in their access to the new treatment. Those with access to treatment work substantially more, marry later, but do not save more. Our results highlight the importance of accounting for such incentive effects when valuing increases in life expectancy.

This report summarizes activities undertaken to support and ensure that the Illinois Department of Transportation utilizes the best demonstrated available technology for design and construction of full-depth hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements and HMA pavements on rubblized Portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP). To achieve this goal, the researchers reviewed pavement design and special provisions for full-depth asphalt and rubblization projects as well as full-depth asphalt and rubblization project performance via condition surveys and deflection measurements. They also modified design inputs as needed from the review of literature and responded to specific issues related to full-depth asphalt and rubblization design and construction. The researchers studied 32 rubblization projects on the interstate system and found this rehabilitation technique is providing good to excellent performance that exceeds design expectations. They provided input on proposed changes to full-depth hot-mix asphalt pavement on rubblized PCCP specifications as well as provided input on the RoadTec 1105e material transfer device. Analysis of traffic speed deflectometer data obtained on several hot-mix asphalt and rubblized pavements resulted in the development of analysis algorithms.

Review question / Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the natural pregnancy outcomes(IUP,REP) of ectopic pregnancy patients by comparing MTX versus surgery, MTX versus salpingostomy, MTX versus salpingectomy, salpingostomy versus salpingectomy, MTX versus expectant treatment. Condition being studied: Ectopic pregnancy(EP) remains one of the most common gynecological emergencies and a leading cause of maternal death in early pregnancy, Increase infertility and repeat ectopic pregnancy. Surgical treatment is considered the gold standard treatment, but with advances in early diagnosis, such as β -hCG levels and transvaginal ultrasound, EP can be diagnosed in the early stage, and the emergency operation rate and mortality rate of ectopic pregnancy are significantly reduced, and some patients can choose to expectant treatment or medical treatment, such as methotrexate (MTX). Naveed AK et al. suggests that expectant treatment is as safe and effective as MTX in EP patients with stable hemodynamic conditions and decreased or low β -hCG levels. The overall success rate of MTX is reported to be as high as 90% when choosing good indications. There is an increasing attention to reproductive outcomes for EP patients, especially for those who want to have a child, so it is crucial to clarify the impact of each treatment modality on natural pregnancy outcome.

In July 2021 the Southeast Coast Network conducted an assessment of water quality in the vicinity of Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores as part of the National Park Service Vital Signs Monitoring Program. Monitoring was conducted following methods developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the National Coastal Assessment Program (EPA 2010). Laboratory analysis measured chlorophyll a and total and dissolved concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous. Field measurements included water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. Water clarity, which requires a Secchi depth measurement, was obtained when possible. All measured parameters were rated as good, fair, or poor based on thresholds set by the EPA (2012). All measured parameters were rated as good, fair, or poor based on thresholds set by the EPA (2012). Water clarity was not calculated at all sites due to the shallow depth of the water in the sound. Of the sites where water clarity could be assessed (5 sites), four measured good and one fair. Sites that were too shallow to measure water clarity had water column conditions that did not preclude light from penetrating to the bottom of the water body so no ecological effects would be expected.Turbidity measurements ranged from 1.0 to 8.0 FNU (Formazin Nephelometric Units) and are good (i.e. < 25 NTU [Nephelometric Turbidity Units]) according to North Carolina Standards (NC Administrative Code 2019). Note that turbidity units of FNU and NTU are roughly equivalent. Chlorophyll a concentration was rated good at 29 sites (97%), and fair at one site (3%). Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration was good at all 30 sites (100%). Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration was good at all 30 sites (100%). Dissolved oxygen concentration (bottom) was rated good at all 30 sites (100%). A water-quality condition summary index was calculated for each site sampled at Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores based on the categorical assessments of chlorophyll a, DIN and DIP concentrations, dissolved oxygen, and water clarity. This summary index indicated good water-quality conditions at all thirty sites (100%). Based on the summary water-quality index rating, overall water-quality conditions at Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores during sampling in 2021 were good. For sediment, ecological condition was ranked as good at 30 sites (100%). As a result, no adverse impacts to benthic organisms due to sediment contamination are anticipated at any of the sampled sites. This ranking was assigned according to the 2010 Environmental Protection Agency, National Coastal Condition Assessment (NCCA) thresholds for sediment chemistry.

Ours is an age of pervasive political turbulence, and the scale of the challenge requires new thinking on politics as well as public ethics for our world. In Western countries, the specter of Islamophobia, alt-right populism, along with racialized violence has shaken public confidence in long-secure assumptions rooted in democracy, diversity, and citizenship. The tragic denouement of so many of the Arab uprisings together with the ascendance of apocalyptic extremists like Daesh and Boko Haram have caused an even greater sense of alarm in large parts of the Muslim-majority world. It is against this backdrop that M.A. Muqtedar Khan has written a book of breathtaking range and ethical beauty. The author explores the history and sociology of the Muslim world, both classic and contemporary. He does so, however, not merely to chronicle the phases of its development, but to explore just why the message of compassion, mercy, and ethical beauty so prominent in the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet came over time to be displaced by a narrow legalism that emphasized jurisprudence, punishment, and social control. In the modern era, Western Orientalists and Islamists alike have pushed the juridification and interpretive reification of Islamic ethical traditions even further. Each group has asserted that the essence of Islam lies in jurisprudence (fiqh), and both have tended to imagine this legal heritage on the model of Western positive law, according to which law is authorized, codified, and enforced by a leviathan state. “Reification of Shariah and equating of Islam and Shariah has a rather emaciating effect on Islam,” Khan rightly argues. It leads its proponents to overlook “the depth and heights of Islamic faith, mysticism, philosophy or even emotions such as divine love (Muhabba)” (13). As the sociologist of Islamic law, Sami Zubaida, has similarly observed, in all these developments one sees evidence, not of a traditionalist reassertion of Muslim values, but a “triumph of Western models” of religion and state (Zubaida 2003:135). To counteract these impoverishing trends, Khan presents a far-reaching analysis that “seeks to move away from the now failed vision of Islamic states without demanding radical secularization” (2). He does so by positioning himself squarely within the ethical and mystical legacy of the Qur’an and traditions of the Prophet. As the book’s title makes clear, the key to this effort of religious recovery is “the cosmology of Ihsan and the worldview of Al-Tasawwuf, the science of Islamic mysticism” (1-2). For Islamist activists whose models of Islam have more to do with contemporary identity politics than a deep reading of Islamic traditions, Khan’s foregrounding of Ihsan may seem unfamiliar or baffling. But one of the many achievements of this book is the skill with which it plumbs the depth of scripture, classical commentaries, and tasawwuf practices to recover and confirm the ethic that lies at their heart. “The Quran promises that God is with those who do beautiful things,” the author reminds us (Khan 2019:1). The concept of Ihsan appears 191 times in 175 verses in the Quran (110). The concept is given its richest elaboration, Khan explains, in the famous hadith of the Angel Gabriel. This tradition recounts that when Gabriel appeared before the Prophet he asked, “What is Ihsan?” Both Gabriel’s question and the Prophet’s response make clear that Ihsan is an ideal at the center of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet, and that it enjoins “perfection, goodness, to better, to do beautiful things and to do righteous deeds” (3). It is this cosmological ethic that Khan argues must be restored and implemented “to develop a political philosophy … that emphasizes love over law” (2). In its expansive exploration of Islamic ethics and civilization, Khan’s Islam and Good Governance will remind some readers of the late Shahab Ahmed’s remarkable book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic (Ahmed 2016). Both are works of impressive range and spiritual depth. But whereas Ahmed stood in the humanities wing of Islamic studies, Khan is an intellectual polymath who moves easily across the Islamic sciences, social theory, and comparative politics. He brings the full weight of his effort to conclusion with policy recommendations for how “to combine Sufism with political theory” (6), and to do so in a way that recommends specific “Islamic principles that encourage good governance, and politics in pursuit of goodness” (8).
