Business angels dominate early-stage investment in firms, but research on their effects on firms is scarce and limited by sample selection. To address sample selection, we propose using population data and we develop an algorithm for identifying business angel investments in such data. We illustrate this novel approach by applying it to detailed and longitudinal total population data for individuals and firms in Sweden. In our application, we focus on a subset of business angels—active business angels who are themselves successful entrepreneurs with a profitable exit. We then study active business angels’ effects on firm performance, using population data. Employing a quasi-experimental estimator, we find that the business angels invest in firms that already perform above par. There is also a positive effect on subsequent growth compared with control firms. However, contrary to previous research on business angels, we cannot find any impact on firm survival. Overall, the paper underlines the need to address sample selection when studying business angels and suggests using population data for identification.

AbstractOur goal was to try and examine the degree to which the different Targums to the books of the Prophets-Targum Jonathan and the Toseftot Targum-do or do not represent a unified attitude to angels and the angelic world. There is no doubt that both TJ and the TTs take the existence of angels for granted; but it is equally clear that TJ adopts a more cautious, reserved, approach than the TTs. Indeed, the TTs are intensely curious about the supernal world. Despite the fact that they derive from a variety of sources and differ quite widely in their language and function, it is undeniable that fifteen of them display such an interest. Moreover, these fifteen instances constitute a representative sample of the different sources and are therefore adequate to indicate a trend shared by the Toseftot Targum as a whole.69 Moreover, I would say that the difference is not one of quantity alone, but also of substance-not only is the number of references larger, but their content is quite different. Unlike TJ to Prophets, the TTs furnish us with the names of no less than seven angels: Uriel, Gabriel, Metatron, Michael, Samael, Penuel and the Angel of Death. The number of groups or categories of angels mentioned in the TTs is also greater. While TJ mentions only such groups as "angels of fire," "angels of trembling," "heavenly angels" and "angels of wind," the TTs refer to still other groups: "cruel angels," "angels of wrath," "angels of peace" and "angels of fear" (in addition to those mentioned in TJ, which also appear in TTs). And such expressions as "his attendants" (smšwhy) or "officers" (srky¸) also occur in the TTs but not in TJ.

At the time of an initial public offering, shares in a firm are typically held by venture capitalists, insiders, corporate investors and angel investors. We examine the role of angel investors in the IPO process. We find that angel investors provide equity capital in industries venture capitalists are less likely to serve and that shareholders in angel backed IPO firms are more likely to sell their shares at the time of the offering. Where venture capital backed IPO firms have higher underpricing, angel backed IPO firms do not, implying that angels may be the preferred investors for early-stage firms.

Once the film industry moved to Los Angeles fiom the East Coast in the 1910s, Hollywood became the source of the negative stereotyping of Latinos in mainstream American cinema. This article argues that the anti-Mexican American discourse in Southern California during the motion picture industry’s formative years provided the social context for those derogatory film images. In doing so, the essay synthesizes two bodies of literature that rarely comment on one another: early Hollywood studio history and works treating the Mexican American experience in Southern California. Three main elements that shaped the anti-Mexican American discourse are discussed: (a) the ostracizing of Mexican Americans to East Los Angeles at the same time that movie companies were flocking to the opposite side of town; (b) the social, economic, and political climate that resulted in anti-Mexicano attitudes, and (c) the view of Mexico as a playground for the United States.

Research into an industrial sector reflecting principles of the emergent "network" model of production indicates that organized labour can play a positive role in post-Fordist Systems of industrial governance. Within the dynamic motion picture industry of British Columbia (B. C), organized labour was the key organizational factor in the birth and rapid expansion of the agglomeration ofsmall, specialized film production firms which has become a competitor for the coveted title of second largest film centre, after Los Angeles, in North America. In this process, B.C. film unions have become the dominant "actors " in forging collaborative relations between local production companies, between the sector and the state, and between the district and other film centers, so critical to the success of the network model.

Introduction. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a tricalcium-based silicate, dicalcium silicate matrix. Despite its good biologic properties, some clinicians still claim to have difficulties in handling MTA after its preparation due to its sandy consistency. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties and cytotoxicity of MTA Repair HP (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) compared with MTA Angelus (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil). Materials and Method. The properties assessed were particle size, setting time, flow, film thickness, radiopacity, water solubility, compressive strength, and cytotoxicity. Statistical analysis was performed considering p < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results. For radiopacity, water absorption and solubility MTA Repair HP were statistically similar to MTA Angelus. The MTA Angelus had statistically different film thickness values, higher than MTA Repair HP (p < 0.05). Besides, MTA Angelus showed a lower and statistically different compressive strength after 28 days than MTA Repair HP (p<0.05). Additionally, MTA Repair HP set more slowly (p < 0.05). Relative to cell viability, MTA Repair HP was statistically similar to MTA Angelus after 24 and 48 h in cell viability. Conclusions. The MTA Repair HP presented similar cell viability, lower film thickness, higher flow, setting time, and compressive strength values after 28 days than MTA Angelus. In general, the MTA Repair HP presented physicochemical and biological properties similar to the MTA Angelus.

LA Gang Tours went on its inaugural ride through Los Angeles in 2010. Black and Latino former gang members from South Los Angeles lead the bus tours, sharing personal stories of gang life with mostly white tourists. A popular critique of the tour is that it facilitates a tourist gaze. However, we argue that to focus on the tourist gaze misses a more pressing opportunity to examine the production of whiteness. We shift the focus to consider the bus’s movement and the power it exerts in transforming the spatial and temporal dynamics of South Los Angeles. Based on participant observation, ethnographic interviews, and discourse analysis of materials surrounding the tours, we found that the tour lays the figurative foundations for gentrifi cation and reconfi rms a white control of mobility in the neighborhood. Th is white control of mobility extends beyond Los Angeles to impact the lives of people of color throughout the United States.

It has been repeatedly stated that the lower Llanvirn Asaphus raniceps described by Dalman in 1827 and by Angelin in 1854 may represent two different species. This has forced us to live with the concepts of both A. raniceps Dalman and A. ‘raniceps’ sensu Angelin, and with a zone of A. ‘raniceps’ where A. raniceps is supposedly not present. However, new considerations based on large old and new collections have led to the firm conclusion that Angelin was correct in his identification of Dalman’s species. What has been regarded recently as the true Asaphus raniceps, at least by Tjernvik & Johansson in 1980 and by Nielsen in 1995, is instead identical with another generally misidentified species, Asaphus fallax Angelin 1854.

Motion picture production is currently carried out by small firms under contract to an independent producer rather than in large integrated firms, the major studios. In this paper the emergence of this vertically disintegrated industry is traced and its impact on the location of the motion picture industry is analyzed. Vertical disintegration has led to a reagglomeration of motion picture employment and establishments in Los Angeles, despite the dispersal of film shooting throughout the world. The processes that are shaping the present-day organization of motion pictures can be observed across a range of industries. An examination of these processes in motion pictures suggests that their association with reagglomeration in urban centers could have an important impact on patterns of urbanization.

This article considers how poetry features in Pasolini’s cinema. It argues that the manner in which Pasolini films poetry provides insight into his theory of an affinity between poetry and film, and into more general judgements concerning social reality. The article begins with an analysis of the final sequence of Salò (1975) where I argue that Ezra Pound’s poetry provides a soundtrack for the spectacle of torture in which the film’s libertines engage. Following this, I consider Pasolini’s 1965 text “The Cinema of Poetry” and use this text as a way of reading the role played by a copy of Rimbaud’s collected poems in Teorema ( Theorem, 1968). I then move to consider the relationship between oral recitation and text in Il decameron ( The Decameron, 1971) and Il fiore della mille e una notte ( The Arabian Nights, 1974). In doing this, I argue that one can observe a shift across these films whereby poetry and orality move from being a foundational moment for reciprocal community to being a vehicle for an ambiguous and violent fate. The article then considers the conspicuous presence of reading and writing within Salò before ending with a consideration of one scene towards the end of the film in which Pasolini appears to invest a recitation of the Gospel with a disruptive force that is otherwise lacking in his final film.

In this paper I present my personal reflections and knowledge of social work based on the film “The Angels’ Share” directed by Ken Loach and released in 2012. The movie is about young who cannot escape their criminal past. To avoid prison, they are sentenced to community service with an assigned social educator, Harry. He soon becomes their mentor, reintegrating them into socjety in a most curious way, introducing them to art and the world of whiskey. The message of this film goes beyond being hopeful, as it shows us the variability of social work, and how it consists of helping individuals, groups or communities to improve social functioning and create conditions, adapting to each situation by using the optimal resources for the individuals being the environment.

This article examines the growth and change of a southern California table grape firm, the George F. Johnston Company. Combining business, labor, and environmental history, it traces the company’s expansion from a semi-arid region just east of Los Angeles to the fully arid deserts of the Coachella and Imperial Valleys of California. The Johnston Company moved south and east into this more hostile environment to produce grapes out of the traditional season, beating the competition to market. In the process, it produced a racially stratified workforce and contributed to an ecological catastrophe. The Johnston case suggests that agricultural production pits capitalists in a triangular struggle over the moment of the harvest with nature and labor. This struggle is intensified by competitive dynamics that drive firms to expand or shift the timing of the productive process.

This study investigated the types of non-financial resources that private investors contribute to fledgling businesses, and reasons for providing these resources. The study is grounded in the resource-based theory of the firm (Penrose, 1959; Rumelt, 1984), and agency theory (Jensen and Meckling, 1976). In-depth interviews were conducted with 27 serial angel investors. Results documented in detail the types of non-financial resources that angels provide to new firms, including business ideas, top managers and network connections - as well as funds. We demonstrate that angles manage risk through a combination of techniques, which has as much to do with managing returns for the business as with managing agency risk. We also describe in detail distinct patterns of investment behavior among private investors, ranging from the dominant pattern of "partnership" with entrepreneurs to the rarer pattern of "passive" investing. Differences in patterns of investment behaviour appear to have significant implications for entrepreneurs seeking startup support from private investors. This study provides a starting point for development of a theory of resource provision and assembly for new firms.

<p><em><span lang="EN-US">Film is a medium for delivering messages through moving images. However, often in film narratives, there is a point of view of the dominance of male characters as subjects and active characters while women as passive characters or objects. Thus, women are often seen as a group that is vulnerable to violence, both sexual and symbolic violence. This article aimed to find a woman's point of view in Charlie's Angels, where women are seen as the dominant subject and not a vulnerable group. This research employed a descriptive-qualitative research method with primary and secondary data sources. The primary data was the Charlie's Angels film, while the secondary data was supporting documents such as books and articles. Data collection techniques employed documentation techniques. The data analysis technique applied Roland Barthes Semiotics to find denotations, connotations, and myths in film scenes to explore their meaning. In addition, this study used Tseelon's theory which states that in the film, there is a woman's point of view that rejects the notion that women are considered sexual objects formed from the point of view of men. The results of this study indicated that the Charlie's Angels film transparently applied a female perspective, made women's roles more dominant than men's, and negated the concept of women as sexual objects from the male point of view</span></em></p><p>Film merupakan media penyampai pesan melalui gambar bergerak. Namun, sering kali dalam narasi film, terdapat sudut pandang dominasi tokoh laki-laki sebagai subjek dan tokoh aktif, sementara perempuan sebagai tokoh pasif atau objek. Sehingga, perempuan seringkali dipandang sebagai kelompok yang rentan dengan kekerasan, baik kekerasan seksual maupun simbolik.<strong> </strong>Artikel ini bertujuan menemukan sudut pandang perempuan dalam film <em>Charlie’s Angels </em>yang mana perempuan dipandang sebagai subjek yang dominan dan bukanlah kelompok yang rentan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif-kualitatif dengan sumber data primer dan sekunder. Data primer yang digunakan ialah film <em>Charlie’s Angels</em>, sedangkan data sekunder berupa dokumen pendukung, seperti buku penunjang dan artikel. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data menggunakan Semiotika Roland Barthes untuk menemukan denotasi, konotasi, mitos dalam adegan-adegan film dalam teks, sehingga dapat digali maknanya. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan teori Tseelon yang menyatakan jika dalam film terdapat sudut pandang perempuan yang menolak adanya kepercayaan jika perempuan dianggap sebagai objek seksual yang dibentuk berdasar sudut pandang laki–laki. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa film <em>Charlie’s Angels </em>secara transparan menggunakan perspektif perempuan dan membuat peran perempuan menjadi lebih dominan daripada laki-laki, serta meniadakan konsep perempuan sebagai objek seksual dari sudut pandang laki-laki.</p>

In this paper the authors explore an integrated view of the relationship between location and industrial real-estate rents within decentralized metropolises. It is postulated that variations across space in industrial rents reflect spatial variations not only in productivity-enhancing firm amenities, but also in utility-bearing worker amenities and local institutional constraints on the supply of industrial space or land. To test for such influences, alternative empirical models employing 1990 industrial (production space) rents in Greater Los Angeles are estimated. Although firm amenities induce the strongest price effect, worker amenities and zoning constraints do play an important role in industrial pricing.

All these three divine religions agree on the existence of angels in general. As this is one of the six articles of faith of our true Islamic religion, and this is one of the most important article of faith in Judaism and Christianity too. Belief in angels is the most widely discussed doctrinal elements in the sacred books of all these religions. It is a matter of fact that all these three divine religions have a firm belief in the existence of angles but they differ only regarding their details such as their names, classes, descriptions, characteristics and actions. This article analyses and addresses the main question about angels in sematic and divine religions which is; how do the divine religions present angels and which are the similarities and differences between them.

This essay suggests that the postrevolutionary Mexican presence in Los Angeles profoundly influenced the emergence and consolidation of film and other media there. In the 1930s, Anglo Americans and Mexicans were in conflict and competition over how to use new forms of audio mass media such as radio and sound films. Mexican movie programmers and audiences in Los Angeles appropriated early sound films in ways that addressed immigrant concerns and contradicted emergent Hollywood norms of exhibition and spectatorship. Mainstream responses to such practices suggest that dominant uses of sound in film exercised an ideological police power that was ultimately aimed at symbolically containing Mexican dissent.

Co-investment funds – which invest alongside private investors, especially business angels – thereby leveraging their networks and experience and minimizing public sector transaction costs – are a recent approach by governments in various countries to address the early stage entrepreneurial funding gap which is perceived as a barrier to the ability of firms to scale-up. However, little literature exists on their operation, impact and effectiveness. This paper assesses the early operation of the UK’s Angel Co-investment Fund, established in 2011. Interview evidence from angels and business managers suggests that the Angel Co-investment Fund is improving the availability of finance by enabling firms to raise funding rounds of between £500,000 and £2 m, hence addressing some aspects of the broken finance escalator model. However, our evidence suggests that it is not yet impacting the supply side, either in terms of stimulating the formation of new angel groups or enhancing learning amongst less experienced angels. Some aspects of the operation of the investment process have attracted criticism from angels and entrepreneurs which need to be addressed. Nevertheless, there is sufficient evidence for positive impact to justify the scheme’s expansion.

In their letter members of the Confederation’s steering committee displayed a clear understanding of the history of Mexico’s struggle to exert some control over the content of Hollywood films.

The article focuses on his work in Los Angeles during two different periods of American culture and politics preceding and following World War ii (1931-35 and 1946-71), examining closely his contributions to Los Angeles Jewish and mainstream dance and theatre through an analysis of his choreographies for the stage and film as well as his teaching methodologies.

Fidelity is a controversial topic within adaptation studies, but one which continues to underscore analysis of film texts adapted from literature. The complex issues fidelity raises are again highlighted by the 2012 adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel On the Road by director Walter Salles. The film was praised by many for its authentic rendering of Kerouac’s novel. Others critiqued the adaptation, but still employed the framework of fidelity as the criterion by which the film was assessed. In this article, it is argued that Salles’s adaptation omitted elements that feature prominently within Kerouac’s text, namely the representation of the two central characters as angels. In advancing this argument, the intention is not to censure the film adaptation, but instead to highlight how the issue of the angel trope illustrates the imprecise nature of the concept of fidelity. The fact that Salles’s film was able to omit Kerouac’s angels and still be considered faithful to the source material indicates that frameworks of fidelity can be incomplete and open to interpretation. Yet at the same time, we cannot conduct such a discussion without employing fidelity as a framework. Thus, the concept remains useful when analysing adaptations from literature to film.

Reyner Banham (1922–88) is widely known for his numerous writings on the modern built environment, including the book Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies (1971). In the BBC television film Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles (Julian Cooper, 1972), he concretized his earlier insights about the importance of mobility in the Southern California metropolis by employing the proclivity of the cinematic medium to represent movement. While traditional notions of the urban icon commonly understand it as a static monument or landmark, in these two works Banham challenges the suitability of this view to a city as inflected by automobility as Los Angeles and proposes the motorway and the experience of driving as its most characteristic iconic forms.

In this paper the potential for electric vehicle production and the likely economic impacts of developing an electric vehicle industry in Los Angeles are examined. An historical overview of the automobile industry in Los Angeles suggests that a fully fledged automobile complex was never really developed. Rather, automotive firms have focused on the production of components for a variety of aftermarket and specialized uses. The small size of most auto firms and their custom orientation bodes well for the nascent electric vehicle industry. The region's industrial base, with the diverse range of products and labor skills offered, is well equipped to meet the needs of electric vehicle producers. After specifying a generic electric vehicle technology, input-output analysis is used to examine the employment effects of shifting production from conventional automobile technology to electric vehicles.

Abstract The criteria used to define Santa Ana winds (SAWs) are dependent upon both the impact of interest (e.g., catastrophic wildfires) and the location and/or time of day examined. We employ a comprehensive definition and methodology for constructing a climatological SAW time series from 1981 through 2016 for two Southern California regions, Los Angeles and San Diego. For both regions, we examine SAW climatology, distinguish SAW-associated synoptic-scale atmospheric patterns, and detect long-term, significant SAW trends. San Diego has 30% fewer SAW days compared to Los Angeles with 80% of SAW events starting in Los Angeles first. Further, 45% of San Diego SAW events are single-day events compared to 35% for Los Angeles. The longest duration event spanned 16 days for Los Angeles (27 November–12 December 1988) and 8 days for San Diego (9–16 January 2009). Although SAW-driven fires can be large and devastating, these types of fires occurred on only 6% and 5% of SAW days for the Los Angeles and San Diego regions, respectively. Finally, we find and investigate an extended period of elevated SAW day count occurring after 2005. This new climatology will allow us to produce month- and season-ahead forecasts of SAW days, which is useful for planning end-of-year staffing coverage by the local, state, and federal fire agencies.

On Saturday, April 13, 1946, an unremarkable headline on page 4 of the Los Angeles Tribune, one of the area's black weeklies, read, “Fontana tragedy was accident, Kenny reports after probe.” Without a credited byline, the article proceeds to deliver the facts of the case: on December 16, 1945, a suspicious fire broke out in the partially built home of O'Day Short, an African American, in the predominantly white suburb of Fontana, fifty miles east of Los Angeles. Mr. Short, his wife, and their two children perished in the fire. Robert W. Kenny, attorney general of California, investigated the incident after “protests of ‘whitewash’ from black organizations and sympathetic white groups,” aided by the San Bernardino County Court. The article reprinted the attorney general's formal statement: “There is no evidence that the fire was of incendiary origin or indicating the identity of any person or persons as the perpetrator of a crime; to the contrary, all evidence adduced supported the conclusion that the fire was accidental.” According to the article, “Kenny's report, besides officially clearing the case of arson, also dismissed the possibility of organized vigilante activity in Fontana with its terse concluding statement, ‘No evidence of such activity has been found.’”

In Belém, capital of Pará, he was joined by German anthropologist Peter Paul Hilbert (1914-1989) of the Goeldi Museum on an adventurous and creative expedition, culminating in a prize-winning art-documentary film and a life-long friendship between the two.

This short essay provides an introduction to the short-lived but influential magazine Women & Film, published in California between 1972 and 1975. Two graduate students, Siew-Hwa Beh (b. 1945) and Saundra Salyer (b. 1946), from the University of California, Los Angeles, and San Francisco State, respectively, were the founders of this pioneering publication devoted entirely to providing a feminist perspective on film. They set up the magazine in response to a collision between their radical leftist and feminist politics and their cinephilia. This essay contextualizes some examples, which are reproduced here, of the first issue's contents. It also sheds light on the eclectic and impassioned approach adopted by the magazine's editors and contributors, bolstered by accompanying excerpts and images.

ABSTRACT: Gabriel Navarro (1894–1950) was critic and entertainment editor for La Prensa (San Antonio) and La Opinión (Los Angeles) during the 1920s and 1930s. In an extensive body of film reviews, columns, and film-related fiction, Navarro considered questions of fandom, stardom, representation, and the racial hierarchies that structured the US film industry. He offered his readers behind-the-scenes accounts of Hollywood, advocated for Mexican immigrant audiences and talent, and argued for culturally sensitive representation. Navarro's work opens new ways of thinking about Latino/a/es in US film history and offers new perspectives on the historical relationships between mainstream media and marginalized audiences.

The 1961 independent film The Exiles is remarkable for many reasons. Nonprofessional Native actors played themselves, created their own dialogue, and developed the storyline, for example, and the film positions itself as documentary and ethnography in ways that validate these Native interventions. Although The Exiles is fundamentally a portrait of American Indian life in Los Angeles, readings from film and urban studies primarily focus on filmmaking technique. As a result of this critical focus, the film's significance in regard to the cultural agency and urban history of Native peoples becomes secondary, and urban Natives are erroneously depicted as anomalous as well. Looking closely at Yvonne Williams, the female Native protagonist, I find that the film embodies Native American survivance through capturing an urban experience that was controlled by Native people more than any other filmic representation up to that point. This article argues for the tremendous import of The Exiles by highlighting the ways in which it challenges expectations of modern Indian people.

The assertive aim of this study is to foster a conceptual adaptation model focused on two literary categories: the book and the film. Regarding the study’s discussion, eclecticism on film adaptation theories is applied to Dan Brown’s famous mystery Angels and Demons. The impacts of the Vatican, the Catholic Church, and parish animosity, which become entwined with history and Christianity, and the layers that augment the idea of Science, will be scrutinised in the aforementioned perspectives of content and form via textual and visual descriptions on the aesthetic frame. When the reader is subtly acquainted with the dichotomy of element-meaning and religion-science among the lines of the novel, the director builds a prolific link between the visuals in the film. People typically see Science and Religion to be in conflict nowadays. However, it is also simple to find researchers and theologians who think they should coexist because they believe Science is limited in its ability to address moral issues. Some even went a step further and believed two domains could constructively express their views, as Ron Howard’s adaptation of the book Angels and Demons envisions.
