Streszczenie:
Recently short word-length (normally 1 bit or bits) processing has become a promising technique. However, there are unresolved issues in sigma-delta modulation, which is the basis for 1b/2b systems. These issues hindered the full adoption of single-bit techniues in industry. Among these problems is the stability of high-order modulators and the limit cycle behaviour. More importantly, there is no adaptive LMS structure of any kind in 1b/2b domain. The challenge in this problem is the harsh quantization that prevents straightforward LMS application. In this thesis, the focus has been made on three axes: designing new single-bit DSP applications, proposing novel approaches for stability analysis, and tacking the unresolved problems of 1b/2b adaptive filtering. Two structures for 1b digital comb filtering are proposed. A ternary DC blocker structure is also presented and performance is tested. We also proposed a single-bit multiplierless DC-blocking structure. The s tability of a single-bit high-order signma-delta modulator is studied under dc inputs. A new approach for stability analysis is proposed based on analogy with PLL analysis. Finally we succeeded in designing 1b/2b Wiener-like filtering and introduced (for the first time) three 1b/2b adaptive schemes.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this research has been to develop an agent based protection and reconfiguration scheme for power electronic building block based (PEBB) DC distribution systems. One of the foremost applications would be in the new zonal DC distribution on naval ships. The research involves the design of an agent based protection scheme which uses the PEBBs for current limiting and circuit breaking purposes. Considerations are given to reduce the system downtime under fault conditions, allow proper coordination and provide backup protection. The research also involves the design of a reconfiguration management scheme based on collaborative agents. The collaboration ensures that the reconfiguration is achieved at a global level, enhancing the system survivability under the conditions of multiple faults and damages. The coordination ensures that only the faulted part of the system is isolated and the reconfiguration makes sure that the power to the healthy part of the system is supplied continuously. The reconfiguration management also performs load shedding if the generation does not meet the load demand of the reconfigured system due to a fault or damage in the generator.

Streszczenie:
The U.S. Navy has developed in their ships, and is continually improving, electric propulsion, ship service power, and electric loads. The latest topology under design is the integrated power system (IPS). The IPS entails the all electric ship concept with electric propulsion, direct current (DC) distribution, and modular technology. In the all electric ship concept, ship propulsion and ship service loads are powered by alternating current (AC) generation. For the IPS, power electronics conversion is to be utilized to convert alternating current (AC) generation to direct current (DC) distribution. As state-of-the-art power electronics, the Navy plans to use power electronic building blocks (PEBB) technology in its IPS. A U.S. naval shipboard power system is required to be a highly reconfigurable system to enhance its survivability and reliability. Reconfiguration is a change in the shipboard power system state for various reasons such as new topology, changing missions and emergencies. It was decided to study the behavior of a PEBB-based integrated shipboard power system during reconfiguration. Since no real time operation data was available, the problem was studied through the simulation of reconfiguration scenarios on a scaled-down computer model of an IPS in MATLAB. Reconfiguration scenarios were determined and staged, and an AC/DC power system stability assessment methodology was applied by decoupling the IPS test system around an intrazonal bus. The coupled system of the test IPS, consisted of two dynamic 4160 VAC generators, two rectifiers, two DC-DC converters between the rectifiers' output looped bus and the downstream intrazonal 775V busses, inverters, buck converters, AC loads and DC loads. There was modeling of excitation perturbations which introduced errors in the assessment of the stability requiring an approximation analysis. The study found that the DC bus of interest was stable for all nine reconfiguration scenarios staged, but it found that other busses were not stable for two of the scenarios. The study further found that lower stability margins occurred at lower frequencies of about 1Hz for stable scenarios. It concluded that there were tangible benefits to advancing the shipboard power system architecture to the IPS topology because of the good stability results.

Streszczenie:
Power electronics building blocks (PEBBs) are standardized building blocks used to integrate power electronics systems. The PEBB approach can achieve low cost, high redundancy, high reliability, high flexibility and easy maintenance for large-scale power electronics systems. This thesis presents the implementation of a 100kW PEBB-based soft-switched bus regulator for an 800V DC distributed power system. The zero current transition (ZCT) soft-switching technique is used to improve the performance of the bus regulator by minimizing switching loss and improving overall efficiency. PEBB modules and a digital control building block are the subsystems of the DC bus regulator. This thesis addresses the design issues at subsystem and system levels. These include: operational principles and design of ZCT PEBB modules; design and implementation of the digital control block, based on DSP and EPLD; and modeling and control design of the DC bus regulator. There are several considerations when using the ZCT soft-switching technique in three-phase applications: the timing of the auxiliary switch gate signals must be arranged differently; there are low-frequency harmonics caused by the pulse width limits; and there is high thermal stress on the resonant capacitors. These issues are resolved by utilizing the sensed phase current information and the design freedom in the PWM modulator. A PWM modulation technique is proposed that can considerably reduce the switching events and further remove the associated loss while keeping THD low. Reduced switching events alleviate the thermal issue of the resonant capacitors. The same modulation technique can avoid the low-frequency harmonics caused by the pulse width limits and double the sampling frequency. The phase current information is used to deal with the control timing issue of the auxiliary switches and to control the three-phase soft-switching operation in order to achieve better efficiency. Additionally, the phase current information is used to implement dead time compensation to reduce THD. The soft-switched DC bus regulator has been tested up to a 100kW power level with 20kHz switching frequency. Experimental results demonstrate that high performance of the DC bus regulator is accomplished in terms of wide control bandwidth, low THD, unity power factor, high efficiency and high power density.

Streszczenie:
The city with its urban density, infrastructure, and cultural, social and educational opportunities can be a desirable place to live for all - regardless of age, income or background. The city of today has changed considerably from the city of the 19th century. Neither is it the city of the future. However, it has great potential to anticipate to the challenges we will face in the future. It is a place that constantly changes. It is a living organism! This constant change is a challenge for architects to develop concepts and design-solutions that can react to shifting uses, zoning requirements, and dweller habits. The constant alteration of lifestyle, residential and commercial use, as well as job-related needs demands a high flexibity and adaptability in architecture and urban planning. Today's life is fast and unpredictable. Other contemporary issues such as sustainabilty or climate change are becoming key issues of today's discussion - in society, in the media and in world policy. Architects - responsible for our built environment - have to find innovative solutions to such ever-changing problems within their profession - within architecture. How can a concept, project or building be designed or constructed to anticipate those future needs, and what are the limits? To explore these questions and many more that followed I chose a site in midtown Washington DC. My thesis project includes 23 townhouses with partial retail, incorporated along an alley in the interior of a city block. The new development is integrated into the existing structure.

Streszczenie:
The basic Power Electronics Building Block (PEBB) configurations are identified and conceptual PEBB modules are constructed and tested. Using the INCA (Inductance Calculator) parasitic extraction and the Saber circuit simulation software, the microscopic relationships between the parasitics of the packaging layout and their circuit electrical effects are cross-examined. The PEBB module with advanced packaging techniques is characterized in comparison with the wire-bond module. The soft-switching techniques are evaluated for PEBB applications. The Zero-Current-Transition (ZCT) is proved better because the parasitics in the power current flow path are absorbed into the resonant soft-switching operation. This makes the PEBBs insensitive to system integration. Based on the building block concept, the discrete and large signal average models are developed for simulation, design, and analysis of large-scale PEBB-based systems. New average models are developed for half-bridge PEBB module and Space Vector Modulation (SVM). These models keep the exact information of the discontinuous SVM and the common mode component of the three-phase system. They can be used to construct the computer models of a power electronics system the same as the modularized hardware and perform time domain simulations with very fast speed. Further more, even though the system is modeled based on modularized concept on the ABC coordinates, it can be used to perform small signal analysis on the DQ coordinates as well. Based on the developed models, the system-level interactions in integrated systems are investigated. Three interaction scenarios are presented: (1) the zero-sequence circulation current in paralleled three-phase rectifiers caused by the interleaved discontinuous SVM, (2) the load and source interactions caused by unbalanced load and small signal impedance overlap, and (3) the combined common mode noise caused by both front-end PWM rectifiers and load inverters. The interaction phenomena and mitigation methods are demonstrated through hardware testbed system. The concept of dc bus conditioning is proposed. The bus conditioner is a bi-directional dc/dc converter programmed as a current controlled current source, which shunts the large signal ac current, which otherwise goes to the dc bus, into an isolated energy storage component. In addition to alleviate the source and load interactions, it increases the load impedance/decreases the bus impedance and provides more stability margins to the distribution system. The dc bus conditioner concept and its functions are demonstrated through system simulation and preliminary hardware experiment.

Streszczenie:
In this report, an optical wireless multiple-input multiple-output communication system employing intensity-modulation direct-detection is considered. The performance of direct current offset space-time block codes (DC-STBC) is studied in terms of pairwise error probability (PEP). It is shown that among the class of DC-STBCs, the worst case PEP corresponding to the minimum distance between two codewords is minimized by repetition coding (RC), under both electrical and optical individual power constraints. It follows that among all DC-STBCs, RC is optimal in terms of worst-case PEP for static channels and also for varying channels under any turbulence statistics. This result agrees with previously published numerical results showing the superiority of RC in such systems. It also agrees with previously published analytic results on this topic under log-normal turbulence and further extends it to arbitrary turbulence statistics. This shows the redundancy of the time-dimension of the DCSTBC in this system. This result is further extended to sum power constraints with static and turbulent channels, where it is also shown that the time dimension is redundant, and the optimal DC-STBC has a spatial beamforming structure. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the difference in performance for systems with different numbers of receiving apertures and different throughput.
