David Harvey gehört seit fast zwei Jahrzehnten zu den einflußreichsten Theoretikern der »Neuen Stadtforschung«*. Bekannt geworden als Autor eines Lehrbuchs der positivistischen Geographie (Harvey, 1969), wurde er zum enfant terrible dieser traditionalistischen Disziplin, als er in Social Justice and the City (1973 erstmals einen marxistischen Ansatz wählte (cf.Badcock; 1984). Dieses Buch ist dann auch in der Folge wegen seiner explosiven Wirkung innerhalb der Geographie oft als sein wichtigstes angesehen worden. Verglichen mit späteren Schriften Harveys war Social Justice and the City eine zögerliche Annäherung an eine materialistische Position in der Geographie. Seine Entwicklung von einer liberal-humanistischen zu einer marxistischen Perspektive, die er noch als mögliche Varianten einer Lösung der sozialen Frage im räumlichen System der Stadt nebeneinander stehen läßt, organisiert die Struktur des Buches. Harveys Positionen ähnelten denen des französischen Marxisten Lefebvre, hoben sich jedoch von der strukturalistisch-althusserianischen Vorgehensweise Manuel Castells' ab, der in den 70er Jahren die Standards in der marxistischen Stadttheorie setzte.

This text discusses and explains the relation between the urban crisis today and the antivalue in respect to the conceptual framework by David Harvey, a well-known British geographer. He approaches this theme in many of his books, including ‘Marx, capital and the madness of economic reason’, published in Brazil, in 2018. This text uses this book as a starting point for the discussion of how the contemporary world, which is increasingly urban, is dominated by the Empire of antivalue, especially in the form of a growing debt. The antivalue, in the form of capital holder of interest, plays a crucial role in the accumulation of capital, articulating production, circulation and realization of commodities, promoting and facilitating the geographical movement of capital and the transfer of capital between economic circuits and cycles of production. However, debt is the favorite form of antivalue under capitalism today. In addition to being supported and granted by the State in a variety of ways, including through public debt, debt imprisons all economic agents in perpetual servitude. Debt follows the tendency of continuous production of value and surplus value under capitalism, a movement that Harvey calls bad infinity. Antivalue in its form of debt is also called fetishism of capital, which defines the contradictory situation in which money alone seems to have the magic powers to create more money. The consequences of growing debt to the urban crisis go beyond the necessity of solving fiscal problems of the State. The need to produce value and surplus value, in addition to the service of the debt generates urban spaces marked by gentrification and segregation. In sum, the text discusses the urban crisis today in the context of the domination by the financial-real estate complex, basing the discussion on Marx’s theory of value and the concept of antivalue, as presented by David Harvey.

This paper confronts the distinction between an immanent eternity and a transcendent one with David Harvey’s concept of time-space compression, trying to show that this author, from a Nietzschean analysis of his considerations about the post-modem condition, makes use of a traditional conceptual apparatus to evaluate that condition. So we place the Harveyan concept of time-space compression in a transcendent eternity, which is still conformed to the tradition, according to our interpretation of Nietzsche.

A economia mundial vivencia um período de recessão, em que há baixo dinamismo e crescimento insignificante da atividade produtiva. Tal cenário é proveniente da crise financeira global de 2008, que em decorrência da configuração do sistema financeiro internacional, se espalhou de forma sistêmica para o lado real da economia mundial. Além de suas especificidades, e com exceção de seu escopo e sua gravidade, a presente crise econômica não se difere das últimas crises que atingiram o globo nos últimos trinta anos. Decorrente da junção de dois capitais altamente especulativos, o capital financeiro e o capital imobiliário, essa crise tem origem na luta incessante do capital em buscar alternativas de valorização dados os limites inerentes à sua natureza, ou seja, ao tentar evitar que o capital passe por períodos de desvalorizações (crise), surgem mecanismos alternativos que alongam e adiam esse destino, mas que ao mesmo tempo atuam no sentido de elevar a gravidade e a complexidade dessas crises. Assim sendo, o objetivo do presente trabalho é interpretar a crise econômica atual através da perspectiva marxista de David Harvey e de seu arcabouço teórico, tentando esclarecer e identificar sua origem e suas consequências para a ordem econômica vigente e para o atual padrão de desenvolvimento

A dissertação procura compreender o fenômeno da financeirização no âmbito do capitalismo contemporâneo. Uma série de transformações iniciadas nos anos 1970 assinalou o declínio do regime de acumulação fordista e a provável emergência de uma nova fase do capitalismo. Sua característica fundamental consiste em um movimento de financeirização, decorrente em parte de mudanças desenvolvidas na esfera financeira. Seus traços mais destacados são o aumento exponencial das transações, tanto em termos absolutos como em relação às atividades produtivas; a liberalização e desregulamentação de mercados e das atividades financeiras em todo o mundo; o surgimento de novos agentes e instituições ligados às finanças. Processo este que desembocou no aumento da importância do capital financeiro nos circuitos de valorização. O caráter recente deste fenômeno ainda não permitiu que fossem estabelecidos consensos teóricos sobre a questão. Por conta disso, a dissertação debruça-se sobre as obras de dois pensadores marxistas, François Chesnais e David Harvey, buscando estabelecer semelhanças, diferenças e, sobretudo, as complementaridades de suas contribuições. A escolha de Chesnais se impõe pelo papel destacado que o assunto ocupa em sua obra. Harvey, por sua vez, concede primazia à discussão das relações das finanças com os demais aspectos que caracterizam o capitalismo na atualidade.
The dissertation seeks to understand the phenomenon of \"financialization\" under contemporary capitalism. A series of transformations started in the 1970s which began out the decline of the \"Fordist\" regime of accumulation and the possible emergence of a new phase of capitalism. Its key feature is a movement of \"financialization\", which results in part from changes in the financial sphere. Its distinctive aspects are the exponential increase in transactions, both in absolute terms and in comparison to productive activities; liberalization and deregulation of financial markets and activities around the world; the emergence of new actors and institutions related to finance. This process led to an increased importance of financial capital in the circuits of valorization. This new moment has not yet allowed to establish a theoretical consensus on the issue. For this reason, the dissertation focuses on the works of two Marxist thinkers, François Chesnais and David Harvey, seeking to establish similarities, differences and, above all, complementarities of their contributions. Choosing Chesnais is imposed due to the prominent role the subject occupies in his work. Harvey, in turn, prioritizes the discussion of relations between finance and other aspects of capitalism today.

This research, while centered upon capital development, will concentrate its efforts on explaining the urgent contingencies behind its destructive aspects.

If capitalism in order to advance must destroy the past, what are the sources and effects of this inexorable tension between creation and destruction? Moreover, what are the principles of this contradictory logic that determines destruction in order to make progress?

This research will not investigate the totality of the destructive history behind capitalism. The time frame in analysis only covers the emergence of neo-liberalism at the beginning of the 1970s until today. This particular choice responds to the fact that neo-liberalism in itself is a strong example of the more destructive aspects of capitalist practice. I will not focus this research on a particular place, or a particular society. Instead, I will treat the topic from two theoretical perspectives, Joseph Schumpeterâ s notion of creative destruction and David Harveyâ s theory of geographical uneven development, along with his theorization of the spatial/temporal fix. Questions of space and development associated with capital will also integrate this research.

What this research will show is that the inexorable confluence between creation and destruction in capitalist practices to counter the overwhelming perspective of capitalism, as a progressive force in social terms, is an eminently political task that requires, not only imagination, but also, the necessary connection between apparent unconnected issues in order to unravel the perplexities of contemporary political and social thought.

Hyllie, a large scaled urban development project in the Southern of Malmö, hopes to contribute to Malmö Municipality’s goal to be the worlds greatest in sustainable development year of 2020. The city of Malmö together with 20-something developers are building at the urban development area and by now the area is full of large scaled buildings and the pile of construction permits for a new modern bathhouse and offices, cultural centers, hotels and thousands of homes are constantly increasing. Just because of all the large-scale investments in this area, I examine the cultural aspects of urban planning in Hyllie in this paper. By studying the struggle for meaning and how it is negotiated between the municipality and commercial entities through a cultural analysis tool build mostly with geographer David Harvey’s theories about a transformation in urban governance from managerialism to entrepreneurialism, I come to the conclusion that the city of Malmö is leaning towards a planning strategies where the focus is on economic growth. As the post-industrial society is highly digitalized offering constant access to information I also look at how the media reports on the creation of meaning in new Hyllie. A transformation is revealed, showing that media year after year becomes less critical and even starts to contribute to the image of Hyllie as the city of Malmö and developers want.

This practice-led research examines ideas surrounding the interpretation of place; the representation and experience of place are explored in my practice and throughout the thesis. The practice and thesis develop an interdependent relationship where one informs the other and each provides a critical platform whereby existing beliefs are brought into question and new ideas emerge. During the research period the practice is tested against different circumstances in a variety of situations and novel responses are generated. The thesis critically analyses approaches to interpreting place through a number of formats and a variety of sources. Both practice and theory are examined through peer-reviewed conference papers, artist-in-residence programmes and publications allowing new ideas to be explored and scrutinized by the academy. A working method that recognizes the importance and usefulness of serendipity and sagacity is established, bringing together my practice and the theoretical scope of the research. My primary focus is to understand and develop critical responses to the experience and representation of place within the realm of contemporary art practice. The work of W.G. Sebald and the secondary literature surrounding his work plays a significant role in providing ways of dealing with the entanglement of knowledge. Period Drama is both the name of an artwork and the name I have given to a conference paper. Both explore the convoluted and complex methods involved in realizing a site-specific work that challenges fiercely-held beliefs about place. My intention throughout the research has been to examine a variety of approaches that explore the representation and experience of place within contemporary art practice. Prominent within this examination has been the highlighting of the need to belong to a particular place and the sense of displacement generated when this need to belong is challenged or the nature of this connection is questioned.

Notre thèse de maîtrise en histoire de la philosophie s’intéresse au débat esthétique, sociologique, politique et philosophique qu’a suscité l’apparition de la notion de « postmoderne ». Plus précisément, nous nous penchons sur l’intervention marxiste anglo-américaine dans ce débat au cours des années 1980 à travers l’examen de trois auteurs — Marshall Berman, Fredric Jameson et David Harvey — qui y ont contribué de manière significative. Afin de lever le voile de la confusion quant aux diverses significations attachées au champ lexical de « postmoderne », nous aurons recours au concept heuristique de la « question postmoderne » qui permet de distinguer trois niveaux de signification — culturel-esthétique, théorie du changement social, philosophico-historique —, mais aussi de les rassembler et de discuter du « postmoderne » dans sa généralité. La réponse marxiste à la question postmoderne fut hautement dépendante des interventions de Daniel Bell et Jean-François Lyotard et leur présence dans ce travail permettra de comprendre le contexte intellectuel et conceptuel avec, notamment, la nature de la transition entre le modernisme et le postmodernisme esthétiques, l’émergence d’une société postindustrielle et l’idée d’une postmodernité comme crise de légitimation des métarécits de la modernité. Nous examinons de quelle manière Berman, Jameson et Harvey ont traité de la question postmoderne dans leurs écrits s’étendant du début des années 1980 à la fin de cette décennie. L’on pourra voir que ce marxisme anglo-américain ne s’oppose pas de prime abord aux notions de « postmodernisme » ou de « postmodernité », bien qu’il craigne les illusions idéologiques qui accompagnent ces notions et tendent à obscurcir le rôle joué par le capitalisme dans les transformations sociales et culturelles.

This thesis contains a detailed academic analysis of the complete rise and fall of Christopher Skase and his Qintex group mirage. It uses David Harvey's 'Condition of Postmodernity' to locate the collapse within the Australian political economic context of the period (1974-1989). It does so in order to answer questions about why and how the mirage developed, why and how it failed, and why Skase became the scapegoat for the Australian corporate excesses of the 1980s. I take a multi-disciplinary approach and consider corporate collapse, corporate regulation and the role of accounting, and corporate deviance.

O artigo toma o conceito de utopismo dialético apresentado por David Harvey no livro Espaços de Esperança para propor a pesquisa etnográfica com os citadinos nos espaços de convivência social localizados na Via Light, em Nova Iguaçu, como processos de sociabilidade em formas espaciais. O tema da pesquisa tem como foco os lugares de convivência social que produzem a intensificação do desenvolvimento geográfico desigual em termos de padrão e de perspectivas de vida, no sentido de refletir sobre as culturas emudecidas na contemporaneidade. Defende-se a ideia de que a pesquisa nos espaços de convivência social pode produzir a materialização do utopismo do processo social, promovendo o político da amizade, tendo como apoio as contribuições teóricas da filosofia de Agamben e de Foucault. The article takes the concept of dialectical utopianism presented in the book by David Harvey Spaces of Hope to propose ethnographic research with the townspeople in social living spaces located on Via Light in Nova Iguaçu, as processes in spatial forms of sociability. The theme of the research focuses on the places of social interaction that produce the intensification of uneven geographical development in terms of standard of living and prospects in order to reflect on the contemporary cultures muted. It defends the idea that research in the areas of social interaction can produce the materialization of social utopianism of process, promoting political friendship, having as support the theoretical contributions of philosophy of Agamben and Foucault

Este artigo analisa a possibilidade de investigar o meio ambiente urbano através de um passeio pela Via Light, na cidade de Nova Iguaçu, escolhida como elemento de referência e que funciona como rastro que enuncia a globalização. Este passeio pela cidade consiste em colher as imagens que ilustram os seus espaços de abandono, caridade, pobreza, crescimento urbano, investimentos públicos e outros para nos aproximarmos da reflexão acerca do utopismo dialético apresentado por David Harvey no livro Espaços de Esperança. A realização da construção da Via Light em Nova Iguaçu servirá como uma travessia, permitindo-nos investigar o objeto da pesquisa: processos de sociabilidade nos espaços construídos na Via Light para a convivência social, a fim de captar os desafios da contemporaneidade na materialização do utopismo. This paper analyzes the possibility to investigate the urban environment through a stroll down Via Light in the city of Nova Iguaçu, chosen as the reference element and act as trail which states globalization. This city tour is to collect the images that illustrate their spaces of abandonment, charity, poverty, urban growth, public investment and others to approach the reflection of the dialectical utopianism presented in the book by David Harvey Spaces of Hope. The completion of the construction of Via Light in Nova Iguaçu will serve as a crossing, allowing us to investigate the object of research: processes of sociability in built in Via Light for social cohesion in order to capture the challenges of the contemporary embodiment of utopianism

Busca-se concretizar esta reflexão a partir da relação entre os espaços construídos na Via Light, em Nova Iguaçu, e o tempo de sua construção. Cityspace has been the topic of urban and cultural studies for at least two decades and has opened a variety of ways to approach the city, from historical and cultural perspectives to socio-geographical, economic, religious, literary, postmodernist, post-colonial and, more recently, geo-critical ones. The article looks at the European and American city from the 1970s to the present through the lenses offered by the theoretical approaches by Edward Soja, David Harvey, Michel Foucault, Frederick Jameson, Bertrand Westphal, Manuel Castells, among others, while highlighting the specific characteristics of cityspace and citizenship, the use and misuse of living and imagined spaces in the period mentioned above. The shift from the modern city to the postmodern metropolis and global megalopolis has entailed essential changes in the views on cityspace both from the architectural perspective and from the city dweller’s perception of space in the city. How these changes have affected our lives and what the city of the future will look like are two core questions this article attempts to answer.

Esta presentación analiza la implicación de la experiencia urbana en la obra del artista afroamericano David Hammons, como artista referente en el contexto del arte afroamericano y como figura influyente en el arte contemporáneo internacional, mediante el análisis de algunas de sus intervenciones mas destacadas en el espacio urbano a partir los años ochenta: Human Pegs Pole Dreams, Bottle Trees, Higher Goals, Path Free y C#. La interacción de sus intervenciones urbanas con las tradiciones rituales procedentes de África en el contexto urbano de Harlem. Las correlaciones con el conjunto de actuaciones que definen lo urbano y su conexión con los referentes de la cultura urbana afroamericana: narrativas ocultas, problemática social, así como la indagación en elementos culturales propios del contexto afroamericano in barrio de Harlem. Relación de sus propuestas artísticas con la música de Jelly Roll Morton y con la idea de criollización cultural propuesta por Edouard Glissant.

Proponemos el análisis de la obra “Mirror” de David Hammons, para demostrar como el tapado de la obra de arte continúa siendo una estrategia crítica de antivisualidad frente a la sobre abundancia de imágenes. Éste es un análisis y una interpretación que forma parte de un trabajo más extenso que desarrollamos sobre las prácticas antivisuales en la contemporaneidad. David Hammons (U.S.A., 1943). En su trabajo, negar la posibilidad de ver y provocar la curiosidad es una de las estrategias que utiliza el artista a través de su obra. Un artista que comenzó burlándose del mercado cuando al principio de su carrera vendía durante el invierno de Harlem bolas de nieve como obras de arte. Comprometido con los derechos civiles, su trabajo reflexiona sobre las experiencias de la vida afroamericana y el papel que juega en la sociedad americana. En el artículo describimos y analizamos el conjunto de la serie mirrors (espejos) y la ponemos en relación a una destacada trayectoria donde performance, pintura, escultura, y toda clase de prácticas artísticas son utilizadas para provocar la curiosidad en el espectador. Analizamos la serie que aparece en la fotografía superior para revelar como frente a la eficacia e inmediatez con la que el sistema del arte y el sistema en general categoriza, digiere y canibaliza los acontecimientos, la negación sostenida se convierte en un valor añadido para las obras de arte. Sólo hay que pensar en el contexto en el que nos movemos con las políticas de visibilidad, donde si las redes de vigilancia se multiplican y los individuos abiertamente nos exponemos al mundo, cualquier muestra de ocultación es tomada como un acto de rebeldía. Interpretar el concepto de tapado de la imagen heredado de sus pinturas ocultas o pinturas de lona (Kool Aids) nos ayuda a establecer relaciones con otras obras de la antivisualidad y la ocultación como estrategia de cuestionamiento. Terminamos con unas conclusiones que nos permiten afirmar que estas estrategias presentes en éste y en otros artistas logran mantener expectante la mirada del visitante de forma que más allá de su antivisualidad sus obras en realidad logran que nos detengamos y pensemos más allá de lo que se muestra. Peach and nectarine production worldwide is increasing; however consumption is flat or declining because of the inconsistent eating quality experienced by consumers. The main factor for this inconsistent quality is mealiness or woolliness, a form of chilling injury that develops following shipping periods in the global fruit market today. Our research groups have devised various postharvest methods to prolong storage life, including controlled atmosphere and delayed storage; however, these treatments only delay mealiness. Mealiness texture results from disruption of the normal ripening process involving disassembly of cell wall material, and creates a soft fruit texture that is dry and grainy instead of juicy and smooth. Solving this problem is a prerequisite for increasing the demand for fresh peach and nectarine. Two approaches were used to reveal genes and their associated biochemical processes that can confer resistance to mealiness or wooliness. At the Volcani Center, Israel, a nectarine cultivar and the peach cultivar (isogenetic materials) from which the nectarine cultivar spontaneously arose, and at the Kearney Agricultural Center of UC Davis, USA, a peach population that segregates for quantitative resistance to mealiness was used for dissecting the genetic components of mealiness development. During our project we have conducted research integrating the information from phenotypic, biochemical and gene expression studies, proposed possible candidate genes and SNPs-QTLs mapping that are involved in reducing peach mealiness susceptibility. Numerous genes related to ethylene biosynthesis and its signal transduction, cell wall structure and metabolism, stress response, different transcription factor families were detected as being differentially accumulated in the cold-treated samples of these sensitive and less sensitive genotypes. The ability to produce ethylene and keep active genes involved in ethylene signaling, GTP-binding protein, EIN-3 binding protein and an ethylene receptor and activation of ethyleneresponsive fruit ripening genes during cold storage provided greater resistance to CI. Interestingly, in the functional category of genes differentially expressed at harvest, less chilling sensitive cultivar had more genes in categories related to antioxidant and heat sock proteins/chaperones that may help fruit to adapt to low temperature stress. The specific objectives of the proposed research were to: characterize the phenotypes and cell wall components of the two resistant systems in response to mealiness- inducing conditions; identify commonalities and specific differences in cell wall proteins and the transcriptome that are associated with low mealiness incidence; integrate the information from phenotypic, biochemical, and gene expression studies to identify candidate genes that are involved in reducing mealiness susceptibility; locate these genes in the Prunus genome; and associate the genes with genomic regions conferring quantitative genetic variation for mealiness resistance. By doing this we will locate genetic markers for mealiness development, essential tools for selection of mealiness resistant peach lines with improved fruit storability and quality. In our research, QTLs have been located in our peach SNPs map, and proposed candidate genes obtained from the integrated result of phenotypic, biochemical and gene expression analysis are being identified in our QTLs as an approach searching for consistent assistant markers for peach breeding programs.
