This thesis began by studying how a temporary event could create permanent architecture and how that architecture could change an urban lifestyle. I chose the Olympics as the event and proposed that they be held in Washington D.C., a city of international prominence with a rich design history but a city that hasn't had a large scale urban redevelopment plan in over a century. I focused on the city east of the Capitol as I wanted to extend the monumental core created in the McMillan plan. I researched baroque design, Olympic planning, and even the original L'Enfant plan. The result of this research was unearthing some of the original L'Enfant design elements and incorporating them into a 21st century city by blending new design issues with the idea of a city designed around radial vistas with magnificent termini. I focused on two sites, the Olympic Torch and the Olympic Stadium. The Torch is situated as a terminus on a site that was intended to be mile marker zero for the country. Its design and importance make it a monument while still not impeding the views. The stadium was created to serve as a stadium for the people, allowing pedestrians outside to view and interact with the event inside. It is sunken so as not to obstruct views but it is spanned by arches that pierce the cityscape signifying its monumentality and appropriately ending the monumental axis started with the Lincoln Memorial on the western edge of the city.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivos: em primeiro lugar, arrolar, traduzir e analisar epigramas de Marcial em que a mulher é objeto de invectiva; em segundo lugar, visa a rastrear, na tradição anterior ao poeta, o tema da misoginia, desde Hesíodo, no célebre episódio de Pandora (Teogonia, vv. 570- 612), passando pelos poetas iâmbicos arcaicos (Arquíloco, Hipônax e Semônides), até o uso que poetas latinos, como Catulo, Horácio e Juvenal, fizeram do tema, entendido agora como tópos. Em terceiro lugar, o presente trabalho pretende observar de que maneira o epigrama, ou melhor, sua possibilidade invectiva, se apropriou da misoginia, adequando-a às características principais do gênero, a saber, brevidade e agudeza, e, finalmente, tentar demonstrar que o vitupério a mulheres em Marcial é regulado e percebido mediante práticas retóricas (como os progymnásmata) e alguns trópoi (como a écfrase), que à época do poeta participavam da formação educacional do cidadão. Nesse sentido, pretendemos estudar particularmente as relações que a invectiva mantém, nos epigramas de Marcial, com a construção de imagens viciosas de mulher e suas relações com o gênero epidítico.
The aims of the present work are first, to list, translate and analyse Martial\'s epigrams in which women are the object of invective; second, to try to investigate, in the former tradition, the theme of misogyny, both in Greece (from Hesiod, in the celebrated episode of Pandora (Teogony, vv. 570-612), to the archaic iambic poets, Archilochus, Hipponax and Semonides), and in Rome (how misogyny, as a tópos, is treatead by Catullus, Horace and Juvenal). In the third place, the present research intends to study in what manner epigram, or more precisely, its vituperative possibility, appropriated the theme of misogyny, adapting it to the main characteristics of the genre, such as conciseness and acuteness. Finally, we attempt to demonstrate that the vituperation against women, in Martial, is regulated and perceived through various rhetorical practices (such as the progymnásmata) and trópoi (such as ekphrasis) that at the poet\'s time were an important part of the citizen\'s education. Therein, we intend to study, in particular, the analogies that the invective maintain, in Martial\'s epigrams, non only with the construction of images in which women are corrupted, but also with the relationship between these images and the epidictic genre.

Cette étude porte sur la modélisation numérique du creusement de tunnels à l'aide de boucliers a front pressurise et notamment sur l'adaptation de la méthode du ramollissement, initialement mise au point pour le calcul, en coupe bidimensionnelle, de tunnels creuses à l'aide de procédés non mécanisés. La thèse est composée de 8 chapitres et comprend une étude bibliographique concernant le calcul des ouvrages souterrains, une analyse de la réponse du terrain a une pressurisation du front de taille à partir des calculs axisymétriques, la mise au point d'une méthode permettant de reproduire, dans un calcul plan, en coupe transversale, les effets mis en évidence en conditions axisymétriques et l'application de cette méthode a l'analyse d'un ouvrage instrumente dans le département du val de marne. Cet ouvrage a été équipe d'inclinomètres et d'extensomètres installes dans le terrain, ainsi que de témoins à cordes vibrantes disposes dans un anneau de revêtement. Les mesures ont permis d'analyser la réponse du massif encaissant et de l'ouvrage de soutènement au cours des différentes étapes de creusements. Le creusement de cet ouvrage a été simule à l'aide de la méthode de calcul développée dans le cadre de ce travail et les résultats de calculs confrontes a ceux donnes par les mesures

Lawrence's work has almost invevitably been read as an aesthetic production whereby one must eventually agree or disagree with his vision of "reality". Those who assume a formalist standard of taste often find that Lawrence "loses control" of his material; those who offer ideological apologies for his work argue that disruptions in the aesthetic plane are representative of an exploratory genius, often seen as the outstanding characteristic of literary modernism. Both approaches, explicitly or otherwise , rely on the ultimate sanction of the achieved image, transmuted by the author always in control of his material. Yet anyone who reads Lawrence with an eye to to what the "tale" says in addition to what the "teller" claims discovers that Lawrence is not in full control of his material, thought it cannot simply be argued, on aesthetic or linguistic criteria, that he is out of control. Rather, there exists a "third" state whereby Lawrence both writes and is written, gives us a message with one hand, yet retracts, as it were, with the other. Because this double-move is preeminently suited to the language of fiction, and because it appears in Lawrence's fiction with the greatest versatility and incisiveness, this dissertation analyzes six of his novels for their rhetorical significance, understood as both an organization of tropes and figures and as a system of persuasive doctrine. A new definition for allegory is proposed, the introductions of thematic and structural "blanks" is examined, and a spread of narrative delays are identified and discussed, all concerned with the central problem of writing novels that direct themselves to the resurrection of a pre-linguistic universe, yet ironically depend more and more upon writing to bring this about. Ideas drawn from Continental philosophy and recent critical theory are incorporated for support and instruction. Attention is also focused on Lawrence's revision processes, often with specific emphasis on unpublished manuscript material.

ENGLSIH ABSTRACT: This study is a political biography of D.F. Malan (1874–1959), the first of the apartheid-era Prime Ministers, and covers the years 1874 to 1954, when Malan retired from politics. It endeavours to provide a warts-and-all account of D.F. Malan which challenges prevalent myths and stereotypes surrounding his public persona and his political orientation. While the overwhelming focus is on Malan’s political career, special attention is paid to his personal life in order to paint a multi-faceted picture of his character. The biography is written in the form of a seamless narrative and employs a literary style of writing. It is based on archival research which utilised Malan’s private collection, as well as the private collections of his Nationalist contemporaries. Malan takes the centre stage at all times, as the biography focuses on his perceptions and experiences. Malan’s views regarding Afrikaner nationalism, which was his foremost political priority, are described, and are related to his views of British imperialism as well as other ideologies such as communism and totalitarianism. This study demonstrates that there is a notable link between Malan’s perceptions of race relations and his concerns about the poor white problem. It reveals that Malan’s racial policy was, to some extent, fluid, as were his views on South Africa’s constitutional position. Debates about South Africa’s links to Britain and the nature of the envisioned republic preoccupied Afrikaner nationalists throughout the first half of the twentieth century – and served as an outlet for regional and generational tensions within the movement. Malan’s clashes with nationalists such as Tielman Roos, J.B.M. Hertzog and J.G. Strijdom are highlighted as an indication of the internecine power struggles within the National Party (NP). By emphasising these complexities, this study seeks to contribute to a nuanced understanding of the South African past.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is politieke biografie van D.F. Malan (1874–1959), die eerste van die apartheid-era Eerste Ministers, en dek die jare 1874 tot 1954, toe Malan uit die politiek getree het. Dit poog om onversuikerde beeld van Malan te skets wat heersende mites en stereotipes aangaande sy openbare beeld en sy benadering tot die politiek uitdaag. Die fokus is hoofsaaklik op Malan se politieke loopbaan, maar besondere aandag word aan sy private lewe geskenk om sodoende veelsydige portret van sy karakter te skilder. Die biografie is in die vorm van naatlose narratief geskryf en maak van literêre skryfstyl gebruik. Dit is gebaseer op argivale navorsing, waartydens daar van D.F. Malan se privaat versameling gebruik gemaak is, sowel as die privaat versamelings van sy tydgenote. Malan is ten alle tye die sentrale figuur en die biografie fokus op sy persepsies en ervarings. Malan se denke oor Afrikaner nasionalisme, wat sy vernaamste prioriteit was, word beskryf en in verband gebring met sy opinie van Britse imperialisme, sowel as ander ideologieë soos kommunisme en totalitarisme. The Washington, D.C. Center for Filmmaking is placed in the middle of a growing area of different uses, on the block bordered by 8th, 9th G and H streets. Across G street, the old Patent Office now houses the national Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery. Churches, schools, and other buildings for study exist in the blocks directly surrounding the proposed buildings and the Martin Luther King Library. The Washington Convention Center and Techworld allow space for large exhibitions and trade shows. Also, office space and the shops and restaurants of Chinatown are just one block east. Access to the site by Metro is across G street at the Gallery Pace Metro stop. The Center for Filmmaking addresses the street with commercial store-fronts of shops or restaurants, accessible from the street as well as from the interior gathering space. The building attempts to embrace the framework of the city openly. The main entry into the gathering space is off the major street of the site, 9th Street. Service access is off of the least traveled street, 8th Street.

Deu-se o início do Império português do Orien-te, com a expansão de rotas comerciais para além dos negó-cios existentes no Norte de África e Guiné. O domínio dos Otomanos limitou as trocas comerciais de Veneza e Génova, permitindo aos portugueses estabelecer uma rota marítima praticamente limitada aos perigos do mar e na qual iria ligar directamente as regiões produtoras de especiarias aos seus mercados na Europa; os Otomanos viriam a ser os grandes adversários no mediterrâneo e mar vermelho. Já no reinado de D. Manuel e com Vasco da Gama na liderança da armada portuguesa, iniciou-se a Carreira da Índia (1497-1499). Washington. D.C.’s urban plan has been studied from Baroque and Parisian standpoints, amongst others. However, understanding Americas capital urban plan from a Kemelic perspective has rarely been attempted. The objective of this investigation was to examine Kemetic symbols within the urban plan, street layout, of Washington, D.C., and to add another, ancient African narrative to the way the city can be interpreted. This study is significant because it explores an overlooked, understudied, yet essential, contribution from an ancient African culture. Kemet. The theoretical framework employed in this research comes from Molefi Asante’s Afrocentricity theory. This theory was employed because it places African phenomena at the center of the research. Further, Afroccntricity, allowed for an expansion of the current conversation as it pertains to discussing the urban plan of Washington. In addition, a hermeneutical methodology was utilized to analyze particular maps, and ancient Kemetic papyri, to show how Kemetic symbols could be seen within the city’s uiban plan. Information was gathered from maps, hand-drawn maps, papyri, texts, and visits to the nation’s pital. The conclusions drawn from the analysis illustrate that there are Kemetic symbols found within the urban plan of Washington, D.C. Lastly, the research provides evidence that, from its inception, Washington, D.C. had Kemetic symbols incorporated into its urban plan: and that past and present builders may be aware of this Kemetic presence.

This thesis aims to provide a critical re-evaluation of politics and ideology in the work of D.H. Lawrence. The thesis brings a number of authors (including the Marquis de Sade, Robert Louis Stevenson, H. G. Wells and Raymond Chandler) into dialogue with Lawrence - fIrstly in order to interrogate Lawrentian assumptions, but also to relocate a writer often seen as being eccentric to literary circles and to society generally. My Introduction surveys two broad schools of Lawrence criticism: first, the 'Lawrentian' kind, which inspects Lawrence's fiction through an often uncritical appreciation of the non-fictional writings - his 'philosophy' - and consequently is often reduced to an echo of the primary material. While recognising, in the manner of my second, socialist school of criticism, Lawrence's philosophy as ideology, a challenge is also made to the conventional left-wing judgement that such ideology indicates Lawrence's political 'failure'. Chapters One and Two provide extended analyses of, respectively, the novels Women in Love and Kangaroo: the first of these novels sees Lawrentian individuals attempting to 'solve' the problem of an oppressive industrial society by escaping it; the second shows the shortcomings of the 'freedom' won by such a supposed escape. Examining the contradictions of Lawrence's individualism, I argue the case that these texts present a rich commentary upon the economic and social contradictions of capitalism. My third chapter takes a broader view of Lawrence's shorter, ironical and satirical works, and argues that an openly satirical mode allowed Lawrence to break free from his contradictory 'philosophy' and engage in a critical dialogue with his own work that is much more penetrating than any critique by his Lawrentian admirers. Finally, the conclusion looks at the persisting problem of the 'Lawrentian' attitude in Lawrence studies, and at the enduring significance of Lawrence to our postmodem world.

D.H. Lawrence's "leadership" novels, namely Aaron's Rod, Kangaroo and The Plumed Serpent, dealt with the ramifications of industrial civilization. This thesis uses a "Tofflerian" approach, drawing on the works of the futurist Alvin Toffler's "trilogy" of noted books on the rate, direction and consequences of "civilizational" change, Future Shock, The Third Wave and Powershift. This thesis argues that Lawrence recognizes the demise of the "love-urge" that had sustained civilization in Aaron's Rod; seeks and fails to find a solution in the political movements of his time in Kangaroo, demonstrating the impossibility of a modem solution to inherently modern problems; and in The Plumed Serpent, seeks an answer in a way of life apart from industrial civilization entirely.

This dissertation considers the extensive and multifaceted efforts by civil rights activists to fight racial discrimination and promote social and economic equality in the nation's capital city. It examines the prolonged battles District of Columbia activists waged to end segregation and discrimination and encourage integration and equality in public accommodations, schools, employment, housing, and voting rights over the course of the mid-twentieth century. As the nation's capital and seat of the federal government, Washington, D.C. represented a significant symbolic and strategic location for nationally-focused institutional campaigns; however, the District of Columbia's pervasive Jim Crow policies and significant black population meant the city also served as an important site for local grassroots activism. Civil rights groups, often comprised of interracial coalitions of residents, pioneered complex strategies that employed direct action protest, espoused political rhetoric, and engaged the federal establishment to challenge discrimination and promote justice. While federal officials expressed various positions on civil rights, from supportive to antagonistic, the complex, overlapping, and often competing jurisdictions of the federal state made deep-seated and long-lasting progress difficult.

This project also explores the complicated role of the state in promoting, obstructing, and institutionalizing civil rights programs in the city. Additionally, this dissertation analyzes these civil rights campaigns within the context of shifting social and political circumstances within the city and nation. As the city underwent massive demographic shifts with rural African Americans moving into the city and white residents moving out to the suburbs, civil rights activists responded with more aggressive campaigns focused on economic and political issues. While leaders of the burgeoning Southern civil rights movement concentrated on legal freedoms and individual rights, local efforts emphasized fairness and collective equality. Civil rights activists employed more aggressive rhetoric and more assertively demanded justice. Despite the turn toward a more militant tone, the men and women in Washington remained committed to the liberal ideal of making the city truly democratic. It was not their dedication to liberal ideals and solutions that impeded progress in the city, but rather the convoluted federal power structure in the city that impeded meaningful progress and hindered the movement toward full equality. As in most places, the legacy of the civil rights movement in Washington, D.C. remains ambiguous.

Modern aircraft are both bigger in some dimensions and smaller in others than previous generations of aircraft. With earlier airplanes we were able to centrally locate a data acquisition system and bring wires from all of the transducers to a central location. With more recent airplanes two factors have combined to make this impossible. First, each new program requires more transducers and thus more cables: it is no longer possible to bring that many wires to a single location. The other problem is that airplane wings and control surfaces have become thinner leaving less room for cables. To date we have been able to get around the problem by using physically small Data Acquisition Units (DAUs) that are distributed around the aircraft. However, it is now reaching the point where the space available in the airplane to run wires is becoming so limited that we need to use DAUs that have a small number of channels as well. What is being proposed is that the test community develop or adopt a standard that will allow systems to be built that look to the higher level elements of the system as a single DAU but in reality are composed of several small nodes that are distributed around the airplane and connected by some communications medium.

Permanent magnet brushless DC motors that have found wide application in high performance servo drives need absolute rotor position sensors. However, the cost of the position sensor limits the use of brush less DC motors for low performance applications such as automotive and home appliances. A sensorless starting scheme for brushless DC motors is studied in this thesis. A hardware implementation of the starting scheme has been instrumented. The modeling and simulation of the sensorless starting performance of brushless DC motors have been accomplished to gain the insight into the process. The experimental results confirm the theoretical prediction that the permanent magnet brush less DC motor can be started without a position sensor. The experimental setup with individual subsystems are described in detail.

Expansive parking lots, miles of asphalt, and traffic jams: this is what the modern sport stadia has come to represent. Does it have to be this way? What does the future of sports stadia hold? Can we build a stadium that is better integrated to the community around it? The stadium must become a major urban element again and it must engage the urban context. D.C. United, the most storied franchise in MLS history, needs a new home. Baltimore and other locations in Maryland would gladly welcome the Black-and-Red, but it is vital for them to remain within Washington, D.C. in a soccer specific stadium. An area of land on Buzzard Point has already been chosen for the future development of a new soccer specific stadium and is now waiting for city council approval. This thesis aims to explore a new type of urban stadium and a new stadium type as a bicycle destination at Buzzard Point. To explore a new type of urban stadium, it is vital to investigate the site's present features as well as investigate the projected future infrastructure development and real estate growth on the site. These future developments must remain throughout the design process because they will one day make up the stadium's urban context.

L’obiettivo di questo studio è gettare luce sul ruolo dell’argento nel IV secolo d.C., sulla sua circolazione e sul suo uso e si andrà alla ricerca del perché esso non sia più battuto con costanza e abbondanza. La prima parte del lavoro si concentrerà sulla creazione di un catalogo monetale che raccoglierà le serie coniate a partire da Costantino I fino a giungere a Valente, morto nel 378 d.C. durante la battaglia di Adrianopoli. Seguirà poi un commento per esteso della storia monetale del lasso di tempo preso in considerazione nel catalogo. Una terza parte verterà sull’analisi della nomenclatura dei nominali, sui termini “siliqua”, “miliarense” e i termini con cui nell’antichità si faceva riferimento ai pezzi in metallo bianco. Si procederà, poi, all’esame della circolazione e dell’uso dell’argento, ricercando dinamiche o scelte alla base della quasi “sparizione” di esso dal sistema monetale del IV secolo. This compares with the United States of America (USA) where, since 1961, every dental student receives formal instruction in Dental Assistant Utilisation (DAU) and, since 1973, Training in Expanded Auxiliary Management. In this treatise the history and development of “four-handed dentistry” is presented along with a literature review of the fundamental principles of DAU. The intial pilot programmes and the subsequent federally funded national DAU programme in the USA are analysed. Four undergraduate DAU programmes from the USA and the current graduate continuing education DAU programme at Westmead Hospital Dental Clinical School are examined. Finally, guidelines for the establishment and operation of a DAU programme are outlined. The aim of this treatise therefore, is to provide the necessary information for a thorough understanding of the fundamentals and philosophy of Dental Assistant Utilisation. This information is presented in the hope that at some stage in the future training in assistant utilisation would become an integral and important part of the undergraduate dental curriculum in Australia. s, nature is of great importance in the creation and representation of characters. Through their contact with nature, their characters experience self-realization as they reveal their hidden selves and as they find ties between their selves and nature. Resumo: Esta dissertação procura analisar de que maneira mulheres do Egito Romano buscavam os instrumentos legais para a manutenção de seus direitos. Neste sentido, foram analisadas oito petições, deliberadamente escolhidas, para demonstrar como as mulheres utilizavam-se de recursos retóricos para a garantia de seus direitos perante situações de violência. Além disso, estas petições também foram analisadas para pensar como estas mulheres buscavam a construção de suas próprias identidades a partir das narrativas dos papiros. Para que esta analise fosse possível, foi estabelecida uma discussão com questões acerca da vida das mulheres na Antiguidade, feminismo, gênero, pós-estruturalismo e agencia. Ao considerar estas questões teóricas, foi possível observar que as mulheres do Egito Romano eram dotadas de espaços de agencia e utilizavam estes espaços para que seus direitos fossem respeitados, demonstrando assim um processo complexo de uso dos jogos de poder presentes no contexto para que fossem respeitadas, contrapondo uma visão historiográfica que coloca as mulheres como submissas no mundo antigo. Abstract: This dissertation seeks to analyze how women from Roman Egypt sought legal instruments for the maintenance of their rights. I chose eight petitions to demonstrate how women used rhetorical resources to guarantee their rights in situations of violence. In addition, these petitions were also analyzed to discuss how these women sought to construct their own identities regarding the narratives of the papyri. The main focus is on women daily lives in antiquity and the theoretical support used is mainly on feminism, gender, poststructuralism, and agency. In considering these theoretical approaches, I was able to observe that women on Roman Egypt were endowed with agency and fought for their right and also rethink a historiographical view that places women as submissive in the ancient world. A survey ofthe phenomenon surrounding Daniel Goldhagen's Hitler's Willing Executioners. Goldhagen describes how "ordinary German" perpetrators, allegedly motivated primarily by a specifically German form of "eliminationist antisemitism," were responsible for the Holocaust. The book's contribution to the field of study has come not from its questionable scholarly merits, but from its ability to strike a resonating chord among public readership. Offering moralistic judgements, it has sought less to explain than to warn; in this sense it is more a work ofEthics than ofHistory. An examination is offered of the arguments ofthe book, the course ofthe controversy surrounding it, and its impact on the historiography of modern Germany, including the role of professional historians in society.

This study examines Lawrence's views of nature and their relations to perspectives drawn from Oriental traditions and philosophies. Many of Lawrence's non-Christian perspectives concerning the universe and man's relationship with nature bear strong affinities with Eastern thought systems, particularly his understanding of such fundamental matters as the enigma of nature, nature's duality and oneness, the mutual identity between man and nature, issues of god and evolution, mind and body, life and death, and sexuality, and concerns with intuition, spontaneity and primitivism. Lawrence met with hostility and prejudice from the literary world partly because some of his viewpoints were misread and misunderstood. However, they can be to a large degree explained and justified by traditional Oriental thought. In Lawrence's understanding of man's integrity and "living wholeness", we have his "indecent" proposition of sexuality, his "strange" assertion of blood consciousness and stress upon the solar plexus, his rejection of mind and intellect, and his preference for desire over ideology, and for primitivism over industrial materialism. These are views parallel to those of Taoism, though they also have their traces in the Western scientific readings which Lawrence was familiar with. Lawrence's transcendental attitude towards nature accounts for his extraordinary sensitivity to the natural world, and for his radical criticism of modern civilizations, sciences and the mechanical life, particularly in terms of financial motivation. The study of Lawrence's philosophy of nature suggests that Lawrence is an outstanding example of twentieth-century Romanticism. Furthermore, in Lawrence and in his work, we see a prominent figure in the development of a new environmental consciousness in literature.

In today's highly competitive global marketplace, organisations are under pressure to find new ways to minimize risk and maximize profits. Profits can increase by reducing the cost of inputs or increasing price of the outputs. Hence, procurement contributes by reducing the cost of inputs by sourcing materials at lower costs. Consequently, this creates a challenge to the buyer as supply risk issues are more likely to occur with lower cost sources that might include new suppliers or unreliable sources. Unfortunately, logistics planners, too, drive new initiatives intended to be cost effective such as "Just-in-Time" (JIT) manufacturing. This adds an additional challenge to the buyer of ensuring uninterrupted supply while the system has actually eroded the supply buffer that would have enabled achieving the goal of low cost supply at lower risk. Hence, supply managers have to deal with the ever-increasing challenges in pursuit of a balance between supply risk and lower cost of supplies while ensuring sustainable supplies. For these reasons, this study aims to develop an implementation plan for the supply risk management. The plan developed from a case study undertaken at Safripol, a large manufacturing chemical company located in Sasolburg, South Africa. The complete study of the implementation plan, from the literature to empirical studies, were conducted by various means, including a study of journals and procurement textbooks, analysis of the supply data of Safripol, an experiment of a proposed plan, and a survey. The literature study initially discusses various approaches suggested by other writers and finally concludes with a proposition of a seven-step process. The process starts with (1) human resource allocation, (2) supply base categorisation, (3) vulnerability assessment, (4) evaluation of the implication, (5) cost/benefit analysis, (6) risk treatment, and it finally ends with the strategic alignment (7). These steps address the major issues that are critical to successful implementation of supply risk management, particularly in large manufacturing companies like Safripol. However, the empirical study went further to investigate the application of the seven-step process. This involved commissioning of a multi-disciplinary team to review the process. The team applied the seven-step process in conducting a full assessment and evaluations of supply risks for four selected suppliers of specific material. The team composed of Safripol employees who are involved in the supply chain of the specific material reviewed. In addition, the analyses of the steps were captured, and stored in a tool developed in Excel worksheets. That enabled the process to be systematic, repeatable and easier to apply. Populated worksheets resulted in a formal knowledge resource database that will enable Safripol to manage supply risk plans and execute action plans in case of supply interruptions. Finally, the study indicated that the seven-step process is practical and applicable to Safripol. In addition, the study found that the process adds value in managing supply risks. Thus, the study achieved its goal of developing an implementation plan for supply risk management. However, the study concludes by providing future fields of study and recommendations in an effort to contribute further to development of supply risk management.

In this thesis, I seek to analyse the reproduction of elite mobilities through participation in Study Internship Programmes (SIP) in Washington D.C. SIPs are programmes for both American as well as international students that come to Washington and participate in a programme that combines an academic track on specific topics with an internship. These programmes can be seen as exemplars of a specialised form of neoliberal education in which middle-class students attempt to acquire mobility capital in the hope of accelerating their future careers. With the help of in-depth interviews and ethnographic methods, I have gathered data about the SIPs which were analysed via textual analysis. I conducted interviews with SIP-alumni, with current SIP-students as well as stakeholders in these programmes. As a theoretical framework, I have utilised a mobilities perspective, along with ideas on individualisation and cosmopolitan capital to develop a framework for study-internship research. I argue that students go to Washington to acquire mobility and cosmopolitan capital, as this might offer a competitive edge. I explore how SIPs affect and transform its participants, their career paths and mobilities, as well as the city of Washington D.C itself as a place. My research showcases the layered identities of the participants through their mobilities, and how their mobilities are connected to the city of Washington D.C., and the key institutions involved. The research also demonstrates that SIPs are indicative of broader career patterns and mobility decision-making among young people in the West. Furthermore, my research indicates how integral the images of Washington D.C. and career-narratives are to the reproduction of elites and to Washington D.C.'s image of power for the SIP-participants to represent their success and aspirations.

The recovery of metals from secondary resources is increasing to alleviate supply risks associated with primary sources. Thermal plasma is widely used for platinum group metal recovery from automotive catalysts, but the mixing of various catalyst types makes their processing difficult. It was found that it was possible to separate silicon carbide based catalysts from cordierite based catalysts by a combination of magnetic and electrostatic separation processes resulting in a cordierite fraction of over 98 % purity, which would result in a more consistent feed material to the plasma process enhancing metal recovery. The flexibility of plasma means that the operational conditions in the furnace can be controlled to suit the chemistry of less noble metals such as rhenium and drive gas phase reactions. The technology was used to recover platinum and rhenium from spent petrochemical catalysts via a novel pyrometallurgical process with over 98 % recovery efficiencies of both metals. The plasma process produces a large amount of slag as a by-product which can be used in higher value applications to avoid waste and improve business models. Plasma derived slag was shown to be an effective, low carbon cement replacement which can potentially obtain a market value of £50/tonne.
