Streszczenie:
This thesis proposes some enhancements of the control and communication aspects of the implementation of a National Plan in any developing country. A cybernetic model for the viable system is used following the approach developed by Beer. Weaknesses of typical current practice are identified and a hierarchical organization, based on the model, is suggested as an alternative, in which all the systems implementing and monitoring the N. P. are considered as one single system, making its functions easier to recognize. Deficiencies, which are characteristic of the situation of developing countries, are identified and remedies are suggested to increase effectiveness. The model provides for the cybernetic principle of freedom, allowing the creation of autonomous subsystems with their own computational needs. A distributed system using micros, databases, and national communication networks, is described, which provides the requirements for realizing the suggested organization, together with packaged software to compensate for missing experience and know-how. The proposals are made in the form of a comprehensive package whose built-in complexity (sophistication) is very high. It is still effective even with inexperienced users but can take full advantage of their developing knowledge. This thesis includes listings and sample runs of some portions of the package which, for purposes of demonstration, have been implemented in dBASE II and an 8080 assembly program on an Intertec Superbrain QD microcomputer.

Streszczenie:
This thesis develops the concept of anarchist cybernetics in an attempt to elaborate an understanding of the participatory and democratic forms of organisation that have characterised radical left-wing social movements in recent years. Bringing together Stafford Beer’s organisational cybernetics and the organisational approaches of both classical and contemporary anarchism, an argument is made for the value of an anarchist cybernetic perspective that goes beyond the managerialism cybernetics has long been associated with. Drawing on theoretical reflection and an empirical strategy of participatory political philosophy, the thesis examines contemporary social movement organisational practices through two lenses: control and communication. Articulating control as self-organisation, in line with cybernetic thought, an argument is made for finding a balance between, on the one hand, strategic identity and cohesion and, on the other, tactical autonomy. While anarchist and radical left activism often privileges individual autonomy, it is suggested here that too much autonomy or tactical flexibility can be as damaging to a social movement organisation as over-centralisation. Turning to communication, the thesis looks at social media, the focus of another kind of hype in recent activism, and identifies both the potentials and the problems of using social media platforms in anarchist and radical left organisation. Importantly, the thesis takes social media as information management systems and speculates on several core aspects of alternative social media that might be more suited to the kind of activism anarchist cybernetics helps elucidate. By introducing and expanding on the idea of anarchist cybernetics, the thesis provides an account of what anarchist organisations have been, what they are and what they could be.

Streszczenie:
This study introduces logistical media and considers one example of such--radar. Innis (1972; 1951), Mumford (1970; 1934), Carey (1988), Virilio (1997; 1989; 1986) and others are discussed as preparing an understanding of logistical media as subtle but powerful devices of cognitive, social, and political coordination that affect our experience of time and space. Radar is presented as significant because of its progressive-catastrophic potential. Radar was invented for national defense and to remotely survey the earth and its atmosphere, but it also allows new collisions with "others." American radar was primarily developed at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT during the 1940s. Historical objects, principally from the MIT Radiation Laboratory Historian's Office, are arranged and discussed according to Walter Benjamin's (1999) historical method. Benjamin theorized that historical debris can be arranged as a dialectical image or constellation that can momentarily disrupt our sense of chronological progress and denaturalize ideology. Benjamin described this disruption as the interruption of the present with the now. Radar is considered in terms of authoritarian modernity, and as contributing to a politics of distance, speed, angle, movement, and perception. Objects from radar history are marshaled to illuminate radar's pre-history, its use of feedback to identify and coordinate objects, and its susceptibility to error and disruption. Present understandings of the 9/11 attacks are challenged by the now of these objects, and an understanding of logistical media is furthered.

VitalSmarts® Crucial Conversations TM general program theory might be a possible countermeasure addressing organizational culture and communication factors affecting quality and safety. This practice inquiry reports: a VitalSmarts® Crucial Conversations TM general program logic model, a major medical center's Crucial Conversations TM historical implementation program logic model, a clinical exemplar central line associated blood stream infection program logic model; and, findings that describe the fidelity of the major medical center's Crucial Conversations TM historical implementation and clinical exemplar central line associated blood stream infection program logic model to the VitalSmarts® Crucial ConversationsTM general program logic model. The results demonstrated there was no fidelity between the major medical center's Crucial ConversationsTM program logic model and the VitalSmarts ®® Crucial ConversationsTM general program logic model. The clinical exemplar CLABSI program logic model and VitalSmarts® Crucial ConversationsTM general program logic model fidelity differed in intended outcomes. The results might suggest that program adaptability along with program fidelity are factors that influence program strength, and these factors must be uniquely balanced within organizational dynamics to realize intended outcomes. The formative evaluation and program logic model might be a feasible methodology and applicable tool for exploring quality and safety within complex adaptive systems, such as organizational culture, where constraints possibly could exclude more rigorous scientific methodologies until factors are more understood

Streszczenie:
Whether on paper, on site or mediating between both, means for reading and writing geometry have been central to architecture: the use of compasses and rulers, strings, pins, stakes or plumb-lines enabled the analysis and reproduction of congruent figures on different surfaces since antiquity, and from the renaissance onwards, the consistent planar representation of three-dimensional shapes by means of projective geometry. Tacitly through practice, or explicitly encoded in classical geometry, the operational syntaxes of drawing instruments, real or imaginary, have determined the geometric literacies regulating the production and instruction of architecture. But making marks on the surfaces of paper, stone or the ground has recently given way to the fundamentally different sequential operations of computers as the material basis of architectural inscription. Practices which have dominated architecture since antiquity make little sense in its current reading and writing systems.  This thesis examines technologies of digital inscription in a search for literacies equivalent to those of drawn geometry. It particularly looks at programming as a form of notation in close correspondence with its material basis as a technology, and its effects on architecture. It includes prototypes and experiments, graphics, algorithms and software, together with their descriptions and theoretical analyses. While the artefacts and texts respond to the different forms, styles, interests and objectives specific to the fields and contexts in which they have originated, their fundamental purpose is always to critique and propose ways of writing and reading architecture through programming, the rationale of the research and practice they stem from.

Multi-UAS teams often operate in ad-hoc communication networks where blind application of consensus algorithms perform poorly because of message intensive nature of such algorithms. Important messages can get lost due to interference or collisions with other messages, and the broadcasting of less important messages can limit the effective bandwidth available for the team. This thesis presents a novel algorithm - Communication-aware CBBA (CA-CBBA) that learns a cooperative communication policy for agents performing decentralized task allocation using consensus based bundle algorithm (CBBA) by accounting for these communication issues. In our approach, agents learn to use features, such as local communication graph density and value of their own messages, to both censor and schedule themselves amongst the other agents competing for shared communication medium. Experiments show that the learned communication policy enables more efficient utilization of the shared medium by prioritizing agents with important messages and more frequently censoring agents in denser parts of the network to alleviate the "hidden node problem." The approach is shown to lead to better task allocation outcomes with faster convergence time and conflict resolution rates compared to CBBA in communication-constrained environments. Policy learnt by agents trained on a specific team size and task number is shown to generalize to larger team sizes in task allocation problems with varying task numbers. To our knowledge, this is the first task allocation algorithm to co-design planning algorithm and communication protocol by incorporating communication constraints into the design process; resulting in better task allocation outcomes in communication-constrained environments.

Streszczenie:
At the same time as we are seeing ever increasing numbers of people actively using social networking sites, and growing evidence of increased participation in campaigning and digital activism, we are seeing a decline in democratic participation in the UK at both a national and local level. This thesis examines these two contrasting effects within the context of Local Government in the UK and explores what the impact might be at the neighbourhood level. The work discusses the influence of place based online activity on democratic decision-making Local Government and the ways in which traditional processes of decision-making, democratic participation and community engagement practice may need to change to reflect the upward pressure that is being exerted by citizen use of new technologies and adjust the way in which Local Government facilitates citizen participation in decision-making. The work develops the concept of Digital civic space as an alternative to eParticipation platforms and discusses how such spaces are being used to connect online activity with democratic processes at present and how present experience may be used to inform future developments. Employing an Action Research method, the research analyses three projects in order to examine the nature of the pre-existing participation online and the impact of creating online civic spaces to connect the participants both to each other and to local decision-makers. Design criteria are proposed which describe the necessary qualities of public-ness, openness, co-production, definition of place and identity and the thesis reaches conclusions as to how these criteria might better connect local resident with the democratic decision-making processes for their communities.

Meriano, Olivia. "Communication skills development after a drama program for children with social-pragmatic communication difficulties". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/59516.

Streszczenie:
The current study set out to describe a drama-based group intervention (InterAct) for children with social (pragmatic) communication difficulties and examine the outcomes, with a particular focus on methodologies suitable to measuring potential change. Those with difficulties in this area may have limitations in the skills that are important for achieving successful interactions with others. As a result, they are likely to struggle to develop and maintain meaningful relationships and are at a higher risk of being socially isolated or depressed. InterAct was conducted over 10 weeks and utilized scripting, storytelling and improvisation. The over- arching goals of the program were for the children to develop: (1) more effective social behaviour and interaction; (2) greater socio-emotional awareness of themselves and others, including skills in modulation of their own communication; and (3) more confidence in their communication abilities. Participants were between the ages of 6 and 9 years and had a range of conditions affecting social communication: autism spectrum disorder (ASD), complex developmental behaviour disorder, social anxiety and/or more global developmental delays (n=6). Because there is no consensus on how to evaluate social (pragmatic) communication, outcomes were assessed using a range of standardized tests and non-standard measures of social cognition and behaviour, including communication samples, a false-belief task, Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS: Kiresuk & Sherman, 1968), a parent-report questionnaire and participant interviews. Results suggest that some participants in the InterAct program showed gains in inferencing, flexible thinking and emotional embodiment, including improvement on a false- belief task. No change was observed for recognition of non-social emotions due to pre-program ceiling effects. Parents and participants indicated satisfaction with the program. Participant feedback indicated highlights in: (1) activities and games; (2) forming meaningful relationships; and (3) self-assurance. Additionally, gains were made in observed social communication, as measured by Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS). Overall, the findings show promising results for use of drama as a form of speech-language therapy for children with social skill deficits. This study discussed methodological considerations for future studies, including the potential for GAS to capture progress in social communication.

We have long assumed that being face to face is the best environment for social interaction. But is "being there" the best we can aspire to? One common approach to improving face-to-face contexts is to add new communication channels - a strategy often described as creating "backchannels." In my work, I use a series of novel complementary communication systems to show how adding communication platforms to collaborative situations can be useful while also arguing for a new conceptual model of a main stage and a side stage (in the Goffman sense) that contrasts with the traditional model of backchannels. I describe a series of projects that embody this approach and explore its limits. My work covers virtual world meetings and presentations, an audience interaction tool for large groups (backchan.nl), a tablet-based system for small group discussions (Tin Can), and a platform for connecting huge distributed audiences (ROAR). In each of these projects I trace my three major research themes: understanding how conversational grounding operates in these environments, how non-verbal actions complement text-based interaction, and how people make decisions about how to manage their attention in environments with multiple simultaneous communication channels.

Communication is vital in any workplace. However, as workers become less tied to their desktops and computers, the need to provide them with a flexible, easy to use, mobile method of communication becomes more necessary. This is particularly true in "non-traditional" workplaces like factories or hospitals. Cell phones, PDA's, and walkie-talkies provide the mobility and most are easy to use, however, they are not designed specifically with the workplace in mind and as a result, they do not adapt to a worker's changing environment. The Simphony communication system is a mobile, voice-controlled, voice communication system built on the iPaq (or any similar PDA) designed specifically for distributed workgroups. It uses the 802.11b network to transmit either synchronous or asynchronous voice data depending on the worker's environment or preference. The system allows for one-to-one or one-to-many communication with voice instant messages or synchronous audio. Simphony transitions between different communication styles as the communication becomes more frequent. When at least 3 voice instant messages are exchanged between two individuals or between an individual and a group, the system automatically transitions them into a synchronous audio chat. The Simphony interface looks much like an instant messaging client but is accessible by voice commands or by button presses on the PDA screen. Simphony allows users to define groups of individuals with whom they can communicate with simultaneously. When a group that a user is a member of becomes active, the user receives notification of the activity by hearing approximately 10 seconds of the audio from that group.
(cont.) If the user is currently in another conversation, she can decide to remain in her present conversation or switch to the newly active group. This thesis describes the design and implementation of the Simphony system and its various applications in different areas.

It has been almost two decades since the beginning of the web. This means that the web is no longer just a technology of the present, but also, a record of our past. Email, one of the original forms of social media, is even older than the web and contains a detailed description of our personal and professional history. This thesis explores the world of email communication by introducing Immersion, a tool build for the purposes to analyze and visualize the information hidden behind the digital traces of email activity, to help us reflect on our actions, learn something new, quantify it, and hopefully make us react and change our behavior. In closing, I look over the email overload problem and work-life balance trends by quantifying general email usage using a large real-world email dataset.

This thesis discusses the idea of machine as a communicative Other. Reconsidering the cybernetic understanding of the relationship between humans and machines, thinkers such as the French sociologist Bruno Latour propose a post-humanist ontology in which humans and nonhumans are socially leveled down. Based on this perspective, the idea that we should assign the designation of communicative Other to machines like the computer has recently gained strength in the field of communication. But there are other possible interpretations for the same phenomenon. Considered to be the forerunner of most of the critical perspectives of technological development, the phenomenology of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger seems to provide elements for the debate on this issue as well. Although established in the middle of the 20th century, and thus prior to the recent developments of technology, his thinking has supported several theoretical projects that aim at interpreting the current technological context, characterized by the deepening of the digitalization and computerization of human life. In view of this, this thesis discusses the following research problem: How can the idea of the machine as communicative Other be understood in the light of Martin Heidegger\'s phenomenology? The hypothesis is that, from this point of view, the ascription of the quality of communicative Other to the machine should be seen as a radicalized manifestation of the technological reductionism of the real undergoing the history of Western thought. The objective of this work is, therefore, to propose an alternative to the cybernetic interpretation based on the phenomenology of the German philosopher. In order to achieve that, the methodology adopted in this thesis is exclusively theoretical. Firstly, it presents the basics of this revised cybernetic perspective according to elementary texts by authors such as Bruno Latour and Arno Bammé and more specific representatives from the area of communication, such as Erick Felinto, André Lemos, Massimo di Felice and David Gunkel. The thesis then introduces the basic concepts of Heidegger\'s phenomenology, especially the meaning of being, based on seminal works by the author and interpreters such as Karl Leidlmair, Peter Trawny, Andreas Luckner and Dieter Mersch. In the next step, the thesis deals with Heidegger\'s understanding of technique and technology, relating it to the question of the meaning of being, supported also in the main works of the philosopher and the interpreters already mentioned, besides Günter Seubold. Based on these foundations, the thesis proposes a phenomenological conceptualization of the communicative Other, also in dialogue with the conceptions of alterity in Emmanuel Levinas and his interpreter Amit Pinchevsky, who explicitly discusses the relationship between the Other and communication. Through this methodology, the thesis aims to present an alternative interpretation to the cybernetic perspective regarding the question of the machine as communicative Other, thus contributing to the enrichment of the debate around this fundamental theme for the future of the area of communication.

In the past few years, the worldwide adoption of digital devices such as computers, cell phones, media players and personal organizers skyrocketed. Due to advances in networking and computation technologies, we now have the opportunity to allow our devices to communicate and collaborate with each other in order to create an entirely new set of distributed user-centric services. An example of a distributed service would be a cell phone that learns more about social communication patterns by communicating with an email client application. This thesis demonstrates how we could develop such a system. I built a telephone application that benefits from the exchange of context information with a personal information manager to help users prioritize calls and make better-informed decisions about them. The application is based on a lower level specification that serves as the foundation for the design of sensible distributed services.

This thesis studies the challenges of providing load balancing and fault-tolerant external links between ad-hoc multicast mesh networks. The work is the gateway component of a research platform called FluidVoice, a wireless audio communication system. This system consists of nodes forming a broadcast mesh based on 802.11. Some of these nodes called Stargates have the capability to communicate to the external world. The problem is that these gateways can fail or lose capacity unexpectedly. In this work we explore the ways to provide communications to the external world under unexpected gateway node failures, and variance of load. We propose and evaluate a distributed algorithm designed to form this robust and balanced interconnection. The algorithm is designed with robustness in mind, and takes into account failures in the outbound links as well as between the gateways, and it is focused to support real-time applications running over it. In this thesis we show that by adopting this algorithm, we can provide a reliable connection to the end-user even as gateways presence or capacity varies. The prototype version has about 20ms of additional transmission time in average, with an overhead of about 5% to 35% depending on the packet size, and a recovery time of 1 to 3 seconds. The redundant traffic generated in intermediate steps of the optimization problem can grow up proportionally to the number of participating gateway nodes, and reduces quickly to only the required amount of traffic.

This thesis presents ComTouch, a new device for enhancing interpersonal communication over distance through use of touch. The ComTouch approach investigates how the sense of touch can be remotely represented by means of a vibrotactile, or touch-and-vibration, interface. Touch has potential to improve existing remote communication by allowing tactile cues to augment the audio-visual information in real-time. The approach of ComTouch is to use this vibrotactile mapping for conveying the pressure exerted by each finger of the transmitter as patterns of vibration against the corresponding finger of the receiver. The implementation is a hand-held device that allows a user to transmit and receive patterns of vibration to and from a remote user. A pair of prototypes was built to allow exploration of remote communication using this vibrotactile mapping. The hypothesis is that the vibrotactile mapping can be used in remote communication of tactile gestures, or expressive uses of touch. User studies will be performed to gauge the information content of the signals transmitted and received using the vibrotactile device in remote communication. A report of the observed usages of the vibrotactile channel will be given. This research will allow us to identify patterns of tactile communication that may inform the design of new tactile communication devices, languages and methods.

How many times have you gone to the grocery store but left your shopping list on the refrigerator door? Wouldn't it be more efficient to have a reminder to buy groceries and the shopping list delivered to you when you were in the vicinity of the store? How many times have you suddenly thought of something you must do or have just had a great idea that you want to write down, or record, for future reference? Wouldn't it be useful to record that thought and be reminded of it when in the relevant place and time? Information delivery utopia would be to receive the exact amount of data we need (no more, no less), when and where we need it, and in a gratifying format, for example, in a pleasant voice or well-structured text. Although we are still far away from this goal, a partial solution to the information overload is to create systems which deliver timely information when the user is in the relevant context. This thesis describes comMotion, a context-aware communication system for a mobile or wearable computing platform. A behaviour-learning agent automatically learns the salient locations in the user's life. Once these places have been determined, location specific to-do lists, electronic Post-it notes or reminders, and subscription requested information can be delivered to the user at the right place and time. The user interacts with the system through a visual and/or speech interface.

Mobile communication markets are known for frequent innovations with potentially high network effects. The conceptual work in economics and innovation studies show how the growth pattern for innovations in such markets could vary depending on the competition and market characteristics. However, the empirical research within this field is limited. This thesis introduces a computer simulation model for analyzing the development, adoption and diffusion of innovations in a mobile market. The model is based on Agent-Based Computational Economics (ACE), and makes use of behavioral theory of firms, economics, and sociology, to leverage the theoretical understating of the diffusion of innovations. The results of the simulation runs on the developed simulation software show that the topologies of social networks have strong effects on diffusion. However, it is also found that in situations where several competing companies launch their innovations sequentially, a winner-takes-all outcome is the most likely when the actors are completely rational. Further, when the information in the market is imperfect, the topology of social networks can create equilibria where the market is shared between several providers. Finally, the variance in consumer characteristics affects both the rate and the outcome of innovation diffusion. The thesis reaffirms that computer simulation is an effective way to combine the sociological and economic theories of innovation diffusion. The results show that there is still a need for more research on the field to better understand why some innovations fail, while other succeed and becomes accepted in the market. The outcome of an innovation launch is shown to be affected by several factors, including timing, network structure, market noise, and consumer characteristics. By using the simulation model to study the influence of such factors in a specific market, service providers may improve their competitive power.

Mediated communication between public spaces is a relatively new concept. One current example of this interaction is video conferencing among people within the same organization. Large scale video-conferencing walls have begun to appear in public or semi-public areas, such as workplace lobbies and kitchens. These connections provide a link via audio and/or video to another public space within the organization. When placed in public or semi-public work spaces, they are often designed for casual encounters among people within that community. Thus far, communicating via these systems has not met expectations. Some drawbacks to such systems have been lack of privacy, gaze ambiguity, spatial incongruity, and fear of appearing too social in a work environment. In this thesis we explore a different goal and approach to linking public spaces. We are not creating a substitute for face-to-face interaction, but rather new modes of conversational and physical interaction within this blended space. This is accomplished through the introduction of what we are defining as a social catalyst. We address the need for designs best suited for linking public spaces and present a series of design criteria for incorporating mediated communication between public and semi-public spaces.

Artificial Intelligence (Al) has shown competence in helping people with complex cognitive decisions like air traffic control and playing chess. The goal of this work is to demonstrate that Al can help people with social decisions. In this work Artificial Intelligence of Social Networks is used to improve human-human communication, recognizing the social characteristics of human relations in order to achieve a more natural online communication interface. Can a computer learn to understand the value of communication? It is shown here that a first attempt at social context classification performs with almost 70% reliability. Could a computer use this to help a person relate to other people through technology? The addition of social context to an email interface is shown to have a positive effect in a user's online communication behavior. Email is a tool that people use practically every day, making an implicit statement about their relationships with other people, and providing an opportunity for a computer to learn about their social network. Furthermore, over the years people have come to utilize and depend on email more in their daily lives, but the tool has hardly changed to help people deal with the overwhelming amount of information. Many of the social cues that allow people to naturally function with their social network are not inherent or obvious in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). This work offers automatic social network analysis as a means to bring these cues to CMC and to foster the user's coherent understanding of the people and resources of their communication network.

This thesis describes the design of a novel modular acoustic communication device for underwater wireless communication. The ocean plays a vital role in the global climate system and biosphere, providing a wealth of biodiversity and resources. Human exploitation, pollutants, and contaminants have already impacted the deepest trenches of the ocean. Yet most of this impact remains invisible - the depth and breadth of the ocean, the opacity of water to light, and the lack of mass-deployable ocean instrumentation, mean that current observations are wildly under sampled in space and time. Even given suitable instruments, a major challenge remains: how to get the data home. Given the opacity of sea water to radio, and the complexity and expense of underwater cabling, audio communication is in may ways the low hanging fruit. Unfortunately, most commercial audio communication systems are both extremely expensive and more powerful than needed for many, if not most, monitoring requirements.
They are also proprietary, a frustrating barrier to development of novel devices. As a result, these off-the-shelf systems are ill-suited to the global multi-scale instrumentation challenges of the future. In what follows we document the design, development, and testing of a low-cost, high-efficiency, modular, and fully open-sourced acoustic communication system. This system is specifically intended for mass deployment, with particular emphasis on standardized hardware and software interfaces. Crucially, this design prioritizes cost and simplicity over performance - as such, this system does not aim to replace the current crop of commercially available systems, but rather to provide a new kind of tool specifically for scalable deployments of low-cost instruments.
Functionally, the system is composed of three core modules: a power management unit; a central processing unit; and a family of interchangeable acoustic transceiver units operating across a spectrum of transmission frequencies. The resulting design should be of valuable use to the scientific community, environmental agencies, citizen scientists, and anyone who needs to transport low-bandwidth data through the ocean at extremely low cost.

This research project applies feminist revisions of Habermas's theory of communicative action to evaluate levels of participation in individually-based development programs through the case study of one such program. Utilizing a triangulated methodology of participant observation, interviews, and discourse analysis, combined with considerations of feminist ethical issues, this research study examines the role of dialogue and "being heard" in the recovery and rehabilitation of women who used prostitution to feed chemical addiction. I utilize a "feminist communicative action" to evaluate a unique type of development program: one aimed at individual development. In addition, this project assesses the place of human communication, emotions, and community in the sustainability of such recovery programs.

Unified Communication and Collaboration (UCC) is a product offer that is the result of fixed and mobile networks convergence and the possibility of development of applications which are interoperable. Currently there are stand-alone products such as VoIP, VPN, Contact Center, Conferencing, Security Services, Email, IM, Presence and others which operate in silos and have complicated and difficult interoperability. In addition, applications are difficult to develop on top of this disparate infrastructure. The convergence of all communication networks on Internet Protocol (IP) and the emergence of more open software platforms have enabled a new paradigm- UCC - to emerge that will change how people communicate and collaborate. The purpose of this paper to analyze the impact of changing communication needs on vendors in general, with a specific emphasis on incumbent telecommunication carriers - network operators and service providers - so-called "telcos". It further illustrates a framework through which an incumbent telco can clearly identify an appropriate strategy for Unified Communication and Collaboration which utilizes its legacy strengths while moving towards innovation. In this paper, an analysis of publicly available data from research companies is performed; Unified Communication and Collaboration is fully defined; market drivers in large enterprise (often known as just Enterprise), and in small and medium business (also called SMB) are analyzed; competitive analysis of Unified Communication and Collaboration equipment vendors and carriers is illustrated; and an appropriate architecture for UCC is outlined. Special focus is given to incumbent telco's role, in comparison to equipment vendors, in the emerging Internet Protocol (IP) based communication technologies which are undergoing active diffusion.
(cont.) The result shows that carriers have more opportunity to capture value through hosted UCC in small and medium business (SMB) market as compared to large Enterprise. Existing hardware communication vendors are better positioned to get the major share of large Enterprise through software based customer premises equipment (CPE) UCC but carriers have an opportunity to provide software as a service (SAAS) services and to exploit their existing distribution channels.

Despite rapid technological advancement and improvement in network bandwidth, people still like to use text for remote communication. Simplicity, directness and anonymity make textual chat the most popular method of communication in the technology-mediated world. In face-to-face communication, people can use gestures, facial expressions, eye gaze and other body languages to alter, emphasize or strengthen their spoken words. Unfortunately, current textual platforms do not have a proper channel for these cues and signals. These non-linguistic cues are able to convey social and emotional information accompanied by the spoken words. I argue that a well-designed textual communication system can increase the expressiveness of text-based chat environments, and we need to have a better chat interface to improve our social interactions in the digital world. Cheiro is an exploration of user-centered gesture-based interfaces that enable expressive textual communication.
(cont.) My approach is to use common input devices, such as mouse or keyboard, as the gestural interface to amplify or change the tone and meaning of the text, and send non-linguistic signals using graphical elements and anthropomorphized kinetic typography. The goal of this thesis is to find an intuitive mapping between the user's gestural input and the graphically enhanced text output, which constructs a novel expressive textual communication platform.

This dissertation is about collaboration as an organizational practice that is communicatively constituted. Specifically, I examine how members of a team in an English language program located in a large southeastern university in the United States make sense of what they define as a collaborative work environment and materialize it in their meetings in spoken and written discourse, and in their mention and use of organizational artifacts. Though the study examines the practices of one organizational setting, the insights generated illuminate broader organizational and discourse dynamics and speak to important issues in the discipline of communication such as authority, leadership, organization sensemaking, materiality, and the role of texts in organizations. The data in this dissertation consists of spoken and written discourse. The spoken and written discourse data consist of 11 audiorecorded and transcribed meetings. To collect these data, I attended team meetings for a period of one year. I transcribed selected meeting data, and analyzed this data using a tool kit called discourse analysis. The written discourse data I examine is comprised of two documents: The Statement of Core Values and the Philosophy on Teamwork. My analysis shows how team members operating in a collaborative environment favor strategies that lead to consensus. These strategies include the use of politeness strategies such as the use of mitigating and inclusive language. Team members also use discursive strategies that demonstrate top down leadership and authority, albeit marked by indirectness. I offer practical recommendations for practice starting with the idea that collaboration does not have meaning outside of communication; collaboration means what the members of a discourse community say it means. I contend that discourse analysis can be a useful tool for organizational members as it can help them become mindful of the language they use and its constitutive force in the workplace. I also offer suggestions that can help organizations retroactively make sense of their organizational texts to ensure that they are accountable to others for what their organizations stand for.

College football has become an enormous aspect of American culture. The effects have permeated into the growing realm of social media, particularly Facebook. College football budgets and the salaries of the head coaches are higher than ever before, and they are only getting larger. Further research is necessary to study how public relations practitioners in college athletic departments can understand the link between social media and college football coaches. This study qualitatively analyzes the Facebook pages of the most dominant college football conference, the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The study analyzes if Facebook fans for each SEC football program view the head coaches as heroes, as well as gauge the scope and existence of Facebook fan comments that favorably or unfavorably reference the head coach. A qualitative content analysis of SEC football Facebook fan comments during the peak competition month of November answers these questions. This study shows that certain fans in the SEC, do indeed, view their head coach as a hero. The study also demonstrates the themes, particularly fan revolt against a losing head coach and the importance of rivalry games as it relates to positive and negative fan comments about the SEC head coaches. The effect of this study on the field of public relations is also discussed.

Globalization has caused firms to redefine regional strategies for distributed design and manufacturing into one of worldwide coordination and integration of resources in order to compete in the world market. This need to address customers and markets worldwide and to achieve a customer focus has led to restructuring of the organization, functions, activities and teams into globally dispersed entities. Globally dispersed teams are attractive because they promise benefits such as increased flexibility, responsiveness and lower costs factors critical to succeeding in this dynamic business environment. The major challenge facing product development and manufacturing organizations is to achieve high performing teams so that all the mentioned benefits can be realized. Globally dispersed teams not only face the challenges of traditional teams; their situation is usually further aggravated by a lack of personal contact, culture and language differences as a result of dispersion in space and time. These factors make communication both within and outside the team boundaries difficult and can negatively impact team performance. This thesis proposes that communication technology and multi-media capabilities can greatly enhance communication and organizational learning in the context of a globally dispersed team. Understanding which technologies and media solutions to apply in the face of culture, language and distance barriers in order to provide the most effective knowledge-sharing environment to support such a team is critical. By studying and analyzing the communication needs and media choices of dispersed product development teams and the impact of culture, language and distance differences on needs and choices, a method is proposed to design a communication environment and management strategies that reduce the effect of barriers and improve communications in globally dispersed teams.

When we encounter statistics too far removed from our personal experience, we sometimes find it difficult to imagine the real implications of that data. While we might understand the information logically, it can be hard to relate it to our immediate personal lives. In this thesis, I investigate a novel visual representation for such data, which I call Personification of Information. This alternative form of data visualization incorporates real people within the viewer's immediate physical or social environment as part of the representation. The goal of this visualization technique is to bring information that is otherwise perceived as distant and detached closer to the viewer. This design strategy is explored in three artistic projects, "What If the World were your n Facebook friends?", "Unification-A Case Study?" And "What Was the Media Lab Thinking About In The Year _ _ _ ?" They are complemented by two projects from other areas that investigate Personification as a design strategy to bring the abstract closer to the individual: "Omnivisu" uses Personification as an interface to architecture; "Giving Character to Characters" applies the strategy to augment digital typography with human expression. Additionally I formalize the findings of these projects as a set of generalized design parameters for Personification of Information.
