The Prague Quadrennial (PQ), the world’s largest exhibition of stage (performance) design, was held for the 13th time from 17-28 June 2015. This article outlines the historical development of PQ, from its “conceptual” beginnings in the 1930s and real beginnings in socialist Czechoslovakia, to the present day. Our focus is the variety of curatorial practices at PQ 2015 that perform the delicate process of “translation” of live performances into static exhibits and “mediation” between the stage (performing space) and the gallery (exhibition space), taking into account the transformations of the “art world” that is increasingly bringing those spaces together.

AbstractIndigenous curatorship has become an increasingly visible presence in the public sphere as part of the long process of North American Native people’s efforts to regain control over the representations and uses of their cultures in Western societies. Even though scholars consider this profession fundamental to Native American struggles for sovereignty, many do not have a clear understanding of what it involves. In the context of scarce scholarship on Indigenous curatorship, this qualitative study relies on interview and textual data to articulate Indigenous curators’ understandings of their work of preserving and promoting Indigenous knowledge. It emphasizes the uniqueness of Indigenous curatorship by mapping out this profession’s specific roles and responsibilities within the broader arena of museum curatorship. The study identifies two main directions Indigenous curators take in their work, namely activism and engagement of the public. Activism consists in Indigenous curators’ efforts to critique oppressive knowledge structures, raise awareness of controversial topics of public interest related to Indigeneity, and support Native artists and tribal communities. Engagement of the public refers to Indigenous curators’ strategies of involving source communities in the design of exhibits and diverse audiences in the interpretation of exhibitions.

This article highlights ethical issues that may arise in the relationship between curatorship applications and neuropsychology. In South Africa (SA), curatorship applications for the elderly diagnosed with dementia require substantiation from two medical professionals, one of whom should be a practising psychiatrist deemed competent to provide this. Concurrently, there is often a request for a psychologist to conduct a neuropsychological assessment and to produce a relevant report. The process may result in ethical issues at various stages of the assessment. The balance between protecting the patient’s rights v. freedom of autonomy becomes a central issue. Psychiatrists and psychologists are cautioned to adhere to best practices throughout the assessment, maintaining a critical and reflective stance. The limitations of cognitive assessment as a predictor of functionality should be considered. Furthermore, neuropsychological training in SA differs across institutions, resulting in variable practitioner competency. ‘Competency’ itself is an ambiguous legal term that may be interpreted variably. This article outlines the definitions and requirements of the curatorship process, as well as the role and limitations of neuropsychology, with emphasis on the ethical dilemmas that may arise.

Streszczenie:
Purpose: The article explores the intricate relationship between top management teams (TMTs), strategic HRM, and company performance. It investigates whether TMT attributes influence strategic HRM choices, ultimately contributing to improved company performance. The study introduces mediation models to unravel how two TMT strategic HRM choices mediate the relationship between TMT attributes and company performance. Design/Methodology/Approach: Conducting a nationwide study involving 150 Polish companies, the research collected data through surveys with 150 HR managers and 150 top managers. Statistical methods, including descriptive statistics, correlations, and regression analysis, were employed in the analytical framework to explore the hypothesized relationships. Findings: The study uncovers a positive correlation between TMT attributes and company performance. It identifies TMT emphasis on SHRM and curatorship of HR as pivotal mediators, showing that larger, diverse TMTs are inclined to prioritize gaining a competitive advantage through human resources, and address vulnerability challenges, positively impacting overall company performance. Research Limitations/Implications: Acknowledging limitations in the oversight of organizational processes, particularly translating top managers’ choices into company performance, the article highlights the need for further validation of the curatorship of HR measurement tools, and suggests incorporating objective financial data for comprehensive performance assessments in future research. Originality and Value: The study contributes valuable insights into the complex dynamics impacting company performance, examining key TMT attributes, and introducing the concept of “curatorship of human resources”. The novel perspective, alongside TMT emphasis on SHRM, proves pivotal in positively influencing overall performance, filling a significant gap in HRM literature.

This paper examines the 25th anniversary of Magiciens de la Terre, one of the twentieth century’s most controversial and ambitious exhibitions. The aim of this text is to call into question the assumption that this exhibition inaugurated a sort of new global confluence between so-called Western and Non-Western art. In order to do that, the paper addresses some of the curatorial projects, theories of (alter)modernity and globalist ideologies that gravitate around this exhibition. Our intention is to analyse the consequences of accepting that 1989 is the degree zero of the ‘spherical confluence’ of global art. For our purposes here, the papers defines this phenomenon as the ‘magiciens effect’: the premise that art became truly global in 1989, in Paris, due to Magiciens de la terre, and that the canonical hierarchies of modernity were dissolved in the process giving place to a post-asymmetric geo-aesthetic regime.

The information professional is gaining more and more space in the current information society. Information and communication technologies appear to facilitate the performance of work in the digital environment. With the increasing amount of information, either digitized or born digital, the care of digital objects has become urgent. Digital curation appears as an alternative in the care of digital objects, ensuring that they have a longer life and can be used. It is believed that activities related to digital curation have required constant updates and other competencies for the information professional. Therefore, we intend to know: what are the information professional's practices that contribute to digital curatorship? General Objective: To identify which types of information professionals perform activities related to digital curatorship. Specific objectives: to highlight the literatures that deal with the information professional in digital curatorship; to verify the necessary competences for the information professional to act as digital curator; to specify the similar and different aspects in the typologies of the information professional. Results: Most digital curators are librarian, archivist or museologist professionals, with master's degrees in the areas of librarianship, records management, archivists or in information science. Few specialize or have master's degrees in digital curation or data curation. Some of the activities that the digital curator performs include the following services: creating metadata; accessing, collecting and manipulating content; discarding; maintaining resources; developing policies and managing data plans and procedures for digital content. Conclusion: Digital curation is important to ensure the long life and integrity of the digital object, so organizations adapt to their reality, life cycle models to work with these digital objects. The specialized training for digital curators is directly linked to the areas of Librarianship and Information Science. This research highlights the type of information professional: the librarian, who most performs activities related to digital curation.

Currently, the curatorial approach is expanding its influence beyond the limitations of museums and art galleries, transforming the experiences and significance of our daily existence. That is embodied, for example, in the curatorial practices of music playlists. In making a music playlist there must be a sound curation process where the songs to listen to are selected and included in the music playlist. Accordingly, this study aims to describe how users of analog (mixtapes) and digital (Spotify playlist) music playlists conduct their music curation process and perceive the relationships behind them. The curation process is analyzed using curatorial and anthropological frameworks, which also attempt to provide a fascinating background on preference formation and the curation process. Qualitative data was collected from a virtual ethnographic approach, with observations and unstructured-semi-structured interviews—offline and online—of 19 informants aged 21–55 living in Yogyakarta and Bandung and a literature review. The data obtained through this study focuses on two outcomes. First, sociocultural circumstances provide the basis for preference formation in selecting, curating, and making music playlists. Second, the particulars of each user's music playlist are related to self-discovery and individual identity. As a result, sociocultural circumstances persuade music playlist users' habits that attach to the curation process.

Streszczenie:
This paper is derived from a talk delivered to the annual meeting of the Geological Curators' Group held in the Yorkshire Museum, York, on 6 December 1990. That meeting attempted to examine why geology had lost ground to archaeology in the popular imagination and how museum geologists might help geology to re-capture the initiative. I was invited to review briefly the heroic age of British geology and the nature of curatorship at that time to see what could be learned from the past which might interest curators trying now to promote geology against the competing attractions of archaeology. The talk was accordingly divided into two parts. Firstly, it tried to analyse the attractions of geology in Britain in the so-called 'Heroic Age' which was adorned by such brethren of the hammer as William Smith, Greenough, Buckland, Sedgwick, Murchison, Lyell and Darwin. Secondly, given the location of the meeting, it seemed worth while to look at the aims of curatorship pursued by one of those heroic geologists, John Phillips, Keeper of the Yorkshire Museum from 1826 to 1840 and its leading spirit until 1853 when he left York for Oxford. Parts of the talk leaned on my current research towards a biography of Phillips and on my recent analysis of his geological work in the 1820s (Morrell 1989).

Is it, should it be, the responsibility of an art librarian to document and collect ‘the now’? There are obvious pros and cons of this – the inevitable value-judgments, the expensive errors of unnecessary acquisition or omission, the labour involved, deviation from the institutional mission, etc. The author explores a personal journey through the acquisition of artists’ books and multiples, defending a role for the art librarian in the interstices of curatorship and the art world as it actually happens.

Streszczenie:
Virtual reality has become an important part of the work of curators, a space in which cultural codes are represented and transformed. The curator is transformed from keeper oftor is transformed from keeper of art into a researcher of culture. The curator himself is not an innocent bearer of a particular cultural tradition. At the present stage of the development of technology and network culture, the focus of curating has shifted to the production of art projects created considering the changes that have made virtuality a part of our daily practice. NFT art has become a controversial symptom of the new attitude towards virtual property. This is evidence of a new ethic and ideology of virtual copyright. If earlier an “event” was perceived as something unique, then in the age of the Internet it can be reproduced many times. Only the reaction to it at a particular moment in time is unique. This provokes repetitions and reconstructions of art projects of the past. The Internet turned out to be a platform where traditional museum and gallery institutions coexist in parallel and a new discourse is being formed. At the same time, the promotional, commercial function of curatorial projects is in demand. The immersive and multisensory projects open old debates about the role and value of art and explore the implications of the web’s influence on our culture and human psychology. Online curation is, in fact, a special cultural practice, since it is not context-free and responds to the Internet not only as a medium, but also as a technologically dependent, cultural, political and economic ecosystem that broadcasts cultural codes.

This article reflects upon the curatorial management process of the Xikrin ethnographic collection and proposes the importance of anthropological interest in the deepening collaboration amongst anthropologists, indigenous peoples and museums, with particular attention to the anthropological study of ethnographic collections. This is true for the anthropological study of objects (and their various meanings and interpretations by the social actors who utilize and appropriate them) and for the understanding of the formation and conservation of ethnographic collections (with their diverse motivations and contexts). Since this type of shared curatorial management style is only now spreading throughout Brazil, the experience is a timely opportunity to develop nuanced perspectives on the anthropological significance of ethnographic collections.

The Late African North African lamps of Terra Sigillata (African Red Slip Ware-ARS) are a category of objects which, alongside tableware, have acquired particular importance, not only for the volume of their production, but for their economic and commercial, iconographic and historical-religious implications. This article aims to present the development of fundamental research for the knowledge about the production and circulation of the ARS and in particular the lamps, taking as examples rich dialogues between the curatorial studies of museological collections and archaeological research that point the limits of the classical models of study of African ceramics and perform accurate reviews of dates, origins and contents of vessels, especially with archaeometric methods.

Streszczenie:
The article analyzes the current state of curatorship and curating from a historical, theoretical and practical perspective. The aim is to understand the origin and the nature of the justified critique facing the profession nowadays from art institutions, artists, as well as from curators themselves, while exploring the challenges faced. The key historical developments of the profession are retraced, which nonetheless always had, to a certain extent, to come to terms with the main stakeholders of the industry: the artist, exhibiting institutions and the public. The profession’s interwoven position is further studied through a variety of positive and normative accounts from curators as well as from academia. These accounts make it possible to evaluate a profession whose complexity is reflected in its various practices, functions and officiating venues. Based on the historical and theoretical analysis, the authors explore the current position of the curator in the art field, as well as problems and criticism faced. Among them, significant attention in the article is paid to the ethical problems arising from the cooperation of curators with artists, institutions and the public, as well as to the alarming convergence of the functions of independent and museum curator and to the partially negative impact of working conditions on the quality of work of these professionals. The authors come to the conclusion that curatorship, because of its specific emergence in the world of art, faces new challenges that cannot be fully resolved because they are unavoidably placed between stakeholders sharing mostly antagonistic values.
