Streszczenie:
By the mid-19th century, in order to combat the threat of colonisation by western powers, the Thai king and the country’s social elite decided to adopt and implement western notions and technology as a superior ways to develop Thailand into a civilised nation, since it was believed that a new modern image of Thai cultural identity would help the country to be regarded as equal to Europe. At the same time, traditional Thai beliefs – especially the values of ‘pure’ Buddhism – were left behind as they were seen to be entirely different from the new western notions. Ever since then westernised modes of thinking have been supported by several generations of Thai rulers through a series of examples of imposed ‘top-down’ planning. This inappropriate and failed harmonisation of modern culture with Thai tradition, a process which is increasingly influenced by globalisation, has resulted in a contemporary cultural crisis that creates many problems in different aspects of the Thai built environment. The objective of this doctoral study is therefore to observe the results of these cross-cultural conflicts, and to find new ways to use architectural design to focus on a different approach from the westernised notions embodied in globalisation. The ideals of eco-Buddhism and of localised, ‘bottom-up’ planning – together with architectural participation by local people – thus become the inspirational ideas behind this study. The framework of the thesis chooses to investigate two different dimensions of the cultural conflicts caused by unsuccessful hybridisation in Thailand: firstly, the extreme physical changes to the built environment caused by the western influences; and secondly, the specific Thai pheonmena that illustrate the negative impact of cultural hybridisation on the mentality of local people. The cities of Bangkok and Chiang Mai have thus been chosen as the two main case studies because each exemplifies particular problems. This thesis, as a PhD by Design will propose various small-scale architectural projects which are expressed differently according to their background problems. These often simple projects – seen as ‘small changes’ introduced by architects – are presented in the hope that their impacts would then be scaled up through local participation and the latent creativities of the residents of these urban areas in Thailand’s two main cities.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is inspired by the experience of living in two places that both have distinctive cultures. Architecture being a form of culture motivated me to enter the school of architecture. After 6 years of study, this paper attempts to answer my initial concerns on architecture and culture. For me it is very important to understand what the relationship between architecture and culture and how they influence each other. How does one present culture and tradition in the design of architecture? How can architecture represent cultural identity in a foreign context, in a more respectful way? Can architecture become the platform to connect people with distinct cultural backgrounds? Last but not least, in the contemporary city of Cape Town, what is the multi-cultural intervention that one can create for immigrants, in this case, the Chinese community in South Africa? These are the essential questions that I want to discuss and investigate in my thesis. There are three sections in this paper. The first is an introduction to Chinese culture and its national identity, looking at traditional Chinese architecture and philosophies behind their making. The courtyard house will be studied as an example. Furthermore, contemporary Chinese architecture that looks at new approaches to representing the modern Chinese identity will be discussed. The second part explores spatial and urban manifestation in Chinese cities - how urban space affects one's cultural behavior. I will look at typical conditions of Chinatown and its architectural characteristic in the foreign context, including the new Chinatown in Johannesburg. In the last chapter, the paper will bring forward my thoughts through design development on site selection, programme and concept. I explored the subject of architecture and identity of nation and the way that cultural identity can be represented through architecture. I questioned how this can be translated into architecture when making its national image into a foreign country.

Dominant theories of aboriginal rights articulate the relation between rights and identity in terms of a logic which treats identity as an irreducible good and rights as the instrumental means of its protection. However, identity claims and legal claims emerge in our use of language. Identity and the institutions in which identities are expressed and experienced are constituted in speech. A close analysis reveals the degree to which law and identity are a systemic imbrication of normative claims characterized by an innate indeterminacy. This indeterminacy renders all rights and identity claims contingent on their reception and validation by others.

Streszczenie:
This thesis addresses the problematic issues of the relationship between artefacts and collective identity in the study of the past. It examines how one current strand of contemporary archaeological theory attempts to recover the truth of the identities of peoples in the past, by utilising a form of interpretation derived from semiotics and idealism, to 'read' their artefactual traces. The conception of cultural identity utilised by contextualism (post-processualism) is re-examined in three ways.;Firstly, the central concepts of these approaches are critically examined in terms of their dependence on, and constitution in, contemporary theoretical discourse, utilising an approach influenced by the strategies of the post-structuralist authors which post-processualism has itself enlisted in support of its interpretative approaches.;Secondly, the practices and concepts which support current archaeological conceptions of cultural identity are re-examined in an historical account of their emergence and transformation since the Renaissance derived from the archaeological and genealogical strategies of Michel Foucault. This demonstrates the extent to which conceptions of the identities of the peoples of the past, from those of Antiquarians to contemporary archaeological theorists, have consistently been projections, or reconstruction, of contemporary views of identity. This seeks to show that such conceptions are historically determined and specific whilst claiming to transcend and recover history.;Thirdly, current archaeological conceptions of cultural identity are juxtaposed against an account of the forms of cultural identification in the contemporary Indian communities of Leicester. This is undertaken in order to demonstrate the cultural specificity of archaeological notions of cultural identity. The implication of this critique is the acknowledgement that descriptions of past cultures are constructions incorporating artefacts within a theorised framework which includes conceptions of identity. These conceptions and accounts of past cultures are artefacts produced in the present, not recoveries of a 'real' past.

This thesis investigates the interconnections between constructions of Scottish national cultural identity, cultural practices, cultural products and cultural policy. It analyzes dance in Scotland as its primary example of cultural practice and cultural product, using it as a window through which to explore meanings constructed around the category of Scotland by both artistic practitioners and policymakers. These groups help to set a symbolic as well as a material context in which cultural consumption and production takes place. The meanings inscribed in cultural products, practices and policy may contest each other or reinforce each other and are often organised around familiar tropes within history, tradition and geography. The research utilises qualitative methods in order to explore the layers of complexity which operate through culture as a signifying system. It draws from two primary sets of data. The first includes transcripts, coded and analysed, of twenty in-depth semi-structured interviews with members of the dance and performing arts community in Scotland. The second includes an analysis of all the cultural policy documents produced by the Scottish Executive since devolution, as well as a wide variety of historical and other secondary data. Existing secondary source material is contextualised and contested by both the voices of the interview participants as well as mediated accounts drawn from the Scottish press. It is found that post-devolution versions of Scottish identity have become, if anything, more complex in the face of greater political autonomy from London. The policymakers demonstrate this through a slow and careful implementation of cultural policy initiatives demonstrative of both assumed and aspirational versions of Scotland, which are tied to instrumental uses of culture and protecting the union. The dance community grapple with this through their own critical cultural products and practices which feed back into the ongoing national conversation. The thesis therefore locates dance within Scottish cultural practice and policy generally, and that wider theme within the overarching question of Scottish identity.

Streszczenie:
This is the first holistic study of English cross-dressed performers. It will situate drag performers within their cultural context in order to establish how their concerns, motivations, employment, communities, friendships, self-perception and artistic ambitions impact on their performances. Furthermore, it utilises performance and ethnographic analysis of a number of artistes to demonstrate how modern drag politicises communities and forms an accessible critique of social roles. Furthermore, it aims to reunite Queer Theory with the realities of its effects on society. The first chapter establishes the study’s position within the overarching framework of Queer Theory. A troupe of drag performers are examined in light of Judith Butler’s theories of performativity to elucidate how the social aspects of gender can be developed. Then, Kate Bornstein’s work is used to illustrate how individuals can use these identities as a conscious method of self-development. Following this, the second chapter explores the social role drag performers have, sometimes inadvertently, chosen. Developing the theories of the interrelationship between belief, LGBTQ sexuality and otherness purported by Kate Bornstein, it asserts the educational and social role that can be taken by drag performers. The third chapter focuses on the messages that these LGTBQ shaman (a theory developed from Laurence Senelick’s work) convey to their community via performance. Case studies illustrate how the performers tailor their acts to politicise their often apathetic audiences. This work is extrapolated in the fourth chapter, which focuses on the community-wide Pride Parade performances. The Rabelaisian carnivalesque is used to argue that the carnivals encourage the audience to review their gender development, revitalising the culture. Finally, the fifth chapter demonstrates how these differing theoretical strands enable televised drag performance to challenge censure by questioning ‘otherness’ itself. This is achieved with reference to horror theory, camp and the performances of Danny La Rue, amongst others, and the cultural impact of the programme Little Britain (2003). The thesis demonstrates that drag is, in fact, a dialogue that can engage and politicise mainstream culture.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation investigates the role of architecture in the emergence of community identity with specific reference to the spontaneous surfacing and expansion of informal settlements within the South African context and the need for fundamental public service infrastructure provision. The aim is to understand and illustrate the significance of contextual infrastructure provision as catalyst in the emergence of social and cultural networks. In analysing the current innovative survival strategies induced by the community themselves, a theoretical premise will be established regarding the implications of an "African urbanist" approach to infrastructure and means of applying it in design. The current rate of urbanization within the South African context has resulted in several human settlements expanding organically, attempting to meet the increasing housing demands whilst neglecting the provision of platforms for various interwoven layers of urban fabric and public services. These platforms are integral in the shaping of cultural and community identity. The intent of the proposal is to provide an interface between the public and the built fabric that serves the needs of, as well as enhances the quotidian praxis within the Eastern Mamelodi precinct. The proposal intends to disclose an existing cultural language and identity by establishing physical loci that host and exhibit quotidian social practices unique to Mamelodi. Through theoretical and contextual enquiry the study provides an understanding of the role as well as the necessity of infrastructure architecture manifested into an appropriate solution which will facilitate the corroboration of a unique cultural identity.

Streszczenie:
Identity can be changed and reconstructed. Thus, it is seen as capable of supporting dynamic changes in real life through the transformation of practices and the articulation of social relations. This study examines how the reconstruction of identity of place is affected by culture and cultural production, and is an unfixed, unfinished and varying process that affects both the place and society. Particularly concomitant with shifts of power, the reconstruction attempts to impose one group’s values over those of other groups in cultural life and social transformation. Despite forming only one‐fifth of the population of the Indonesian city of Pekanbaru, Malay people have emerged as a group who have held important positions in both local government and urban society since 2000. This makes Pekanbaru city an intriguing research case. After more than a decade, the implementation of the group’s has led to visible changes in the city. This can be seen in the use of Malay architectural motifs on buildings, and the introduction of ‘new’ traditions to establish the madani city, which develops physically, socially and in the spirit of Malayness. By using a qualitative approach, this study investigates the influence of Malay culture in Pekanbaru city. The field data can be grouped into three types: physical evidence, people’s interpretations, and archive data collected using a range of methods such as observation, semi‐structured interviews, testimonies, and group discussions. The data are analysed and interpreted within an iterative process to expand understanding of the processes of reconstructing identity. Thus, this study affirms a wide range of thought about connections between the culture and identity of place which is identified through architecture and sociocultural change in urban society. In turn, this study offers particular insights into how identity on the margins becomes an exclusive set of collective identities.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Over the last decades Britain´s ethnic minorities have successfully established themselves in a multicultural society. In particular, Indian – Hindu communities generally improved their social and economic situation. In this context, the third generation of British Indians is now growing up. In contrast to the previous generation of the Indian diaspora, these children grow up in an established ethnic community, which learned to retain its religion, traditions and culture in a foreign environment. At the same time, these children are part of the multicultural British society. Based on the academic discussion about the second generation of immigrated ethnic communities, when the youth often suffered from cultural differences, racism and discrimination and therefore rejected aspects of their culture of origin, this paper assumes that the loss of the culture of origin further increases in the third generation. This thesis follows the main theories about the connection between generation and integration. It is believed that the preference of western culture influences the personal, ethnic and cultural identity of young people. This leads to the rejection of traditional bonds. Before introducing this thesis various theoretical concepts are discussed which are inevitable for the comprehension of the diasporic situation in which British Indian youngsters grow up. As part of the worldwide Asian Indian diaspora Indian families in Britain maintain manifold links to Indian communities in various countries. Particularly, the link to India plays a decisive role; the subcontinent is referred to as an abstract homeland, especially by the first generation. While the grandparents strongly adhere to their Indian culture and Hindu religion, the second generation already generated cultural change. In this process various cultural values of the Indian ethnic community have been questioned and modified. Further, the second generation pushed the integration into the British society by giving up the dependence on the ethnic network. This paper is based on a hybrid and fluent definition of culture. This definition also applies to the underlying understanding of identity and ethnicity. Due to migration, cultural contact and the multilocality of the diaspora, diasporic and post-diasporic identities and cultures are characterized by hybridity, heterogeneity, fragmentation and flexibility. Particularly, in the younger generation – though dependent on a number of social and structural factors - cultural change and mixture happen; in this process new ethnicities and identities evolve. In the second and third part of this paper the thesis of loss of culture of origin is refuted on the basis of findings from empirical research. British - Indian youngsters in London have been questioned for the study. Half of the youngsters are related to a sampradaya, a Hindu sect. This enables the author to compare youngsters who do not belong to a particular religious group with those who are included into a religious and / or ethnic community through a sampradaya. The analysis of the findings which are based on qualitative and quantitative social research shows that the young people have great interest in their culture of origin and that they aim to maintain this culture in the diaspora. They identify as Indian and are proud of their cultural differences. In this, they differ from the second generation. In contrast to the generation of their grandparents the Indian identity of the third generation is not based on nostalgic memories. They confirm and emphasize their postdiasporic difference in a western multicultural society. The findings from the survey hereby exceed the thesis from Hansen’s theory about the rediscovery of the culture of origin in the third generation. The comparison of both groups shows that in the context of the differentiation of postmodern and postcolonial communities also ethnic groups become increasingly differentiated. Therefore, the Indian heritage and culture does not play the same role for every young British Indian.

Cultural competence and working with diversity are concepts which refer to the ability of professionals to work with individuals from minority groups. Furthermore, these concepts are receiving increased interest from mental health fields and services are expected to practice in a culturally competent manner. The predominant aims of this thesis were therefore to examine whether mental health professionals were equipped to respond to the needs of the increasingly diverse society in the UK; and to explore whether the dominant models used. in mental health services were effective in working with all individuals. To achieve the first aim, a qualitative review was conducted to explore whether cultural competence was being practiced in the clinical psychology profession. It subsequently argued the need for training in this area within clinical psychology doctorate courses. Additionally, a phenomenological qualitative study explored the experiences of individuals with religious and spiritual beliefs to see whether CBT was an effective approach. The findings from both the review and research paper suggest that although discourses about working with diversity are increasing, cultural competence is lacking. Specifically, the views of the participants in the research study wished for their identity to be explored in therapy, a view which was corroborated by many minority group individuals in the review. Furthermore it was both acknowledged and emphasised that individual differences can exist within any individual and difference should not only be recognised but explored also. It was therefore concluded that mental health professionals, including clinical psychologists' need to receive training in how to practice with cultural competence. Suggestions were made to develop this area to enable practitioner' to see that any individual may reflect a minority group identity.

This research has as objective to propose recommendations for design education in Amazonas, parting from the concept of cultural identity. By using a qualitative approach, through bibliographic research and the focal group technique, the investigation had for guidelines two discursive strands: one theoretical an the other empiric. In the theoretical strand there are discussions about categories of modern rationality as well as modernization and their implications for comprehending cultural identity, in the scope of design education in Amazonas. About the empirical aspect and parting from the focal groups accomplished, registries of concepts about cultural identity are found, and then read under a critical perspective which comes from the idea of social emancipation. The data obtained provided subsidies for indicating educational, methodological and epistemological principles to be observed in the context of design education in Amazonas, aiming at the attainment of contextualized educational processes, such processes also being based in the sociocultural specificities of this portion of Brazil.

Ethnic identity can be subject to both passive and overt review, which has the potential to cause traumatic fracture of identity. I am a second generation American-Puerto Rican, which can be defined as a person born in the United States of native Puerto Rican ancestry. Personal identity is constructed in part via social and linguistic associations that work with, and against, the cohesive development of an individual’s claim to his or her identity. From the standpoint of a non-fluent Spanish speaker of Puerto Rican descent, I analyze the connection between place, language, and in particular, face-to-face communication, as these aspects come together in developing/disassembling identity. The major focus of this thesis concerns the power of the face as a point of (mis)recognition between people, the site in which a confrontation of identity takes place, in conjunction with spoken language.

The face is the essential locus on the body for recognizing that the person before you is indeed a person; from that point forth, identity is revealed and awareness of subjectivity constructed. Stuart Hall discussed the construction of identity through the concepts of the enlightened subject, the sociological subject, and the post-modern subject. I will be referring to an individual’s identity in terms of these three models, while focusing on ethnic and cultural associations. It should be understood that in my discussion of face, “face” is not comprised solely of what rests above one’s shoulders; rather, the concept incorporates the entirety of an individual’s physical representation. I will question the ways in which language shapes identity, and how culture(s) and society reinforce it. I will also explore the conflict that unfolds when one is denied ownership of the identity that one has established as true. This analysis incorporates philosophy and cultural theory, including, but not limited to: Emmanuel Levinas’ “Face of the Other,” which professes that we must not inflict conceptual violence on the face of the person standing before us; additionally, Gloria Anzaldúa’s theory of the ethnic face and haciendo cara (making face), which states that minorities (women in particular) must construct layers of masks in order to adapt, and to deflect persecution.

Language defines the borders of “face,” and urges us to construct a binary of correct and incorrect, true and false. However, a person’s identity cannot be false, because subjectivity exists beyond language. In the context of this thesis, I re-frame the individual’s frustrations with misrecognition of ethnic identity, through my focus on face and fluency, or lack thereof, in a particular spoken language. Through my video practice, I have forged a new pathway to explore these dualities. In a self-revelatory process, this project guides the viewer through a mixed media visualization of ethnic authentication and judgment.

Though more recent Asian American representation in media has been lauded, the majority of portrayals have been considered to be stereotypical misrepresentations. Because negative media representations can have a detrimental impact on people's self-concepts and their views of others, it is important to understand how Asian Americans are representing their own identities online. In order to understand how Asian Americans are negotiating their own ethnic, racial, and national identities online, constant comparative analysis was employed to examine patterns and themes in the visual and textual communication of Asian American Instagram posts. Their cultural identities were communicated as a cultural blending, which included the use of Asian, American/Western, and Asian American cultural values, products, and behaviors. Together, these factors provided insight into the construction and communication of a multilayered identity, mirroring the process of the communication theory of identity. This study indicates that multicultural identity analysis can be applied to visual texts and Instagram can provide more fluid, authentic representations of identity despite its inability to account for internal multicultural identity conflict. Further, not only are values, products, and behaviors components of culture, but they are also facets of identity that can be portrayed visually.

“Je est un autre” is an interactive installation, aiming to represent cultural identity through multimedia art. In this dissertation I ask: How can we represent identity? The present text raises the key theoretical concepts that sustain this artistic creation, discussing the definition of identity, and how this identity may be translated into artistic creation. The dissertation establishes a research process, based on “Material Thinking”, a method for rationalizing over the materials used in the creative process. This dissertation presents a conceptual proto-methodological solution for representing collective identity, through a reflection of individual identity and presenting a solution for the use of structure against itself. It takes into account the different actors that take part in the representation process and the relationship between language and reality, through the contributions of Derrida and Semiotics.

The drastic changes in Thai life since the 1980s, led by the impact of globalisation and economic growth, has made the Thai people to become more aware of the concepts of nationhood and cultural/national identity or "Thai-ness", especially through the form of cultural activities including visual art. The fear of losing national identity has led to the revival of traditional art, namely "neo-traditional Thai Art". This style is strongly supported by the government and is regarded as the mainstream of the Thai art scene since it has been the most effective catalyst for arousing patriotism and creating a sense of Thai unity. - Thai-centrism is promoted by artists and art instructors as a necessary means to distinguish national characteristics from the influence of Western art styles. Consequently, modern and contemporary Thai art is geared toward the conservative value of national identity. The assumption is that such art should reflect characteristics that are uniquely Thai. Yet, globalisation also gives some Thai artists, who are the subject of this thesis, confidence as the new internationalism opens up a wide range of opportunities. This thesis presents the work of distinctive avantgarde/ contemporary Thai artists, particularly Montien Boonma, Manit . Sriwanichpoom, Michael Shoawanasai, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Navin Rawanchaikul. They struggle against the dominance of traditional styles and the professional hierarchy, yet are challenged to make distinctive contributions to contemporary Thai art. Thai-ness is defined and redefined in many contemporary contexts, despite the government's favouring neo-traditional art. While neo-traditional Thai art is favoured at home, neo-traditional artists have not really succeeded on the international art scene, even though they have exhibited in major museums around Asia. On . the other hand, avantgarde/ contemporary Thai artists, who always struggle to survive at home, have been selected by foreign curators, who had • developed an appreciation for cutting-edge/ experimental Thai artistic expression to participate in many prestigious international platforms.

Immigrants’ and their descendants’ assimilations are old issues in the economic literature. However, they have mainly been investigated in terms of immigration economic efficiency and discriminations. At the same time, cultural assimilation is a recurrent issue in the public debate and particularly through the concepts of national and cultural identity. The identity theory came out in economics more than a decade ago. It allowed improving the understanding of individuals’ decisions when they define themselves by their belonging to one or more groups to which behaving norms are attached. Thanks to this theory, we explore to what extent cultural identity, seen as the expression of immigrants’ cultural assimilation, allows improving the understanding of socioeconomic inequalities. We first highlight the importance of the family context and the educational attainment for the professional outcomes of first and second generations of immigrants. Then, we analyze the formation of the cultural identity. If ethnic identity diminishes with time since arrival in the host country, it also depends on the way it is measured. We exhibit a negative influence of ethnic identity on employment and voting participation but neutral on the wage level. Finally, thanks to a laboratory controlled experiment, we verify in a more general framework the significant role of group identity on individual behaviors

Cultural influences on educational achievement were explored in this study of Chinese university students. Academic choices, goals, and performance in relation to family background, ethnic identity, and cultural socialization were ascertained through semi-structure interviews and questionnaires. The sample of thirty-two McGill University students represented a cross section of majors, and were selected into groups based on length of residency in Canada. Data from university records, which showed the evolution of Chinese enrollment and achievement patterns over the last three decades, provided the historical context for the interviews. Major themes regarding family and ethnic identity emerged which suggest that educational ambitions may be socioeconomically motivated, and rooted in an ethnic minority's aspiration for upward mobility. However, the key facilitator of educational success is a strong home background and family system, which was able to promote and enforce a single-minded pursuit of education.

A cross-cultural examination of a selected group of Indian and American adolescents was conducted to understand the influence of cultural expectations, gender, and identity on adolescents' niche-building behavior. For the purpose of the present study, adolescents' niche was limited to their bedrooms. Data were collected from 285 American adolescents of which 151 were females and 134 were males. The Indian sample consisted of 198 adolescents of whom 75 were females, 118 were males, and 5 adolescents who did not mention their gender. Participants from both cultures were from eighth and ninth grades, with an age range of 12.17 to 16.50 years. The results of the study showed that adolescents' niche-building behavior differed based on culture, gender, and identity. Indian adolescents possessed/desired a greater variety of electronic equipment, furniture, and decorative items in their bedrooms as compared to their American counterparts. Females had/desired a larger variety of items in their bedrooms as compared to males. Females had/desired more relationship items like pictures of family members and make-up accessories in their bedrooms, whereas males had/desired more instrumental items like athletic equipment or sporting goods. Interestingly, more females than males had/desired pictures of themselves that reflected "who they were." A higher percentage of diffused/avoidant adolescents had/desired items and possessions in their bedrooms as compared to achieved/moratorium or foreclosed adolescents. Achieved/moratorium as well as diffused/avoidant adolescents were more likely to have/desire computers, internet access, globes or maps in their bedrooms as compared to foreclosed adolescents who were more likely to have/desire religious items. Interaction effects showed that Indian females were mostly likely to have/desire possessions in their bedrooms followed by American females, Indian males, and American males.

Given increasing global migration and the importance of positive cross-cultural relations across national borders, this dissertation offers an interdisciplinary exploration of identity formation in migration that employs theological, psychological, and sociological lenses. To this end, I consider the views of three interlocutors—Drs. Miroslav Volf, Jenny Hyun Chung Pak, and Stanley Hauerwas—to form the theoretical basis for an initial theology of Christian identity (Chapter 6). Additionally, my contemporary social research data examines the social construction of religious, ethnic, and national identities among foreign-born evangelical migrants who entered the United States to pursue advanced academic studies and graduated in the years from 1983 to 2013. From an interviewed sample of eighteen graduates and a surveyed sample of 405 graduates, I investigate how these participants understood their identities in their migration experiences. My primary research question is: How does one’s personal religious faith relate to one’s identity construction in international migration? The data from these samples confirm previous claims that identities are both fixed and fluid and suggest that, when compared to other personal identities, faith is primary in identity construction. I present my findings on the relationship between religion and the construction of personal identity, the relationship between religion and personal migration patterns, the negotiation of multiple identities among an educated migrant population, and the relationship between migration and individual identity (Chapter 8). I combine this theoretical and social research to offer an initial theology of Christian identity in migration, the primary conclusion of which is that migration is integral to the formation of Christian identity (Chapter 9). Finally, in conclusion, I submit the implications of my conclusions for community organisations and educational institutions.

The study examined relations between a cross-cultural geographically mobile childhood and adult cultural identity, attachment to cross-cultural identities (CCIs) and self-esteem. CCIs are loosely defined identities (e.g., third culture kids [TCKs], military brats, missionary kids) that describe some individuals' childhood cross-cultural experience. The 475 participants spent at least two years before age 18 in a culture different from their parents' and completed an online survey including childhood cross-cultural experiences, Cultural Homelessness Criteria, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Self Label Identity Measure (SLIM) that captured strength of affirmation, belonging and commitment to any CCI. Cultural homelessness (CH) was related to lower self-esteem; higher SLIM scores was related to higher self-esteem and lower CH. TCKs reported lower self-esteem than non-TCKs and older participants experienced less CH and higher self-esteem. SLIM scores buffered the CH-self-esteem relationship, whereas a TCK CCI and having more cross-culturally experienced social networks did not.

The city of Sao Luiz do Paraitinga, located in the Paraiba Valley, State of Sao Paulo, in the first days of calendar year 2010, was hit by the biggest flood in its history. The waters of the river Paraitinga rose about twelve meters above its usual riverbed, causing destruction of a great portion of the architectural heritage and causing several damages to the affected population. The process of reconstruction of the city had the local culture in a leading role since in various situations the government and agencies responsible for national heritage preser-vation were forced to review pre-designed projects and contemplate the identity of that community as an essential goal. In order to study this leadership of popular culture in the process of rebuilding São Luiz do Paraitinga, I first brought up the significance that memory and expressions of pop-ular culture have for the identity of the town. Directly involved in the process, which was also my object of study, I collected rich documentation that along with my experience jus-tified the analysis presented. In that analysis, I highlight the main role that peoples life-style played in different moments which are linked to the tragedy that occurred, to the ac-tions taken to return to normality and to the reconstruction of what had been destroyed. The experience brought significant contributions, not only to the people of Sao Luiz do Paraitinga, but also to the understanding of situations resultant from disasters that change the living conditions in cities, completely transforming its daily routines as well as the practices of governmental and collective agencies and the population.

The present thesis was begun in October 1996, with the aim of exploring the relationship between Cyprus television and aspects of the national and cultural identity of Cyprus youth. The thesis consists of seven chapters in all, which can be summarized as follows: In the first chapter, a survey of the historical, political and media realities in Cyprus establishes the ground for the present study, while in the second chapter, a literature review presents the writings on culture and identity, media theories and their development, with a discussion of important theoretical concepts and perspectives, like Cultural Studies, identity theory, globalisation versus localisation, postmodernism with its fragmentation and concepts of "otherness," as well as the relationship of all these concepts to Cyprus realities. A review of the relationship between television and media research to young audiences — internationally and locally - and a final discussion of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, ends Chapter two, foregrounding, at the same time, the third chapter on Methodology. The choice of the mixed paradigm — quantitative (statistical) and qualitative (Text and Discourse analysis of television programmes, and interviews and group discussions with the sample) is discussed, explained and documented in the third chapter. The fourth chapter consists of the presentation, statistical correlation and discussion of the results from the Statistical Field Survey, which rendered insights into the sample's attitudes and mapped the ground for the next two stages — the Programme analysis and the Interviews, by offering cues and clues for these stages. The fifth chapter presents a textual and discourse analysis of the first five programmes leading the sample's preference list in the Field Survey, while chapter six discusses the interviews and group discussions which were both cross-fertilized by the results of the Statistical Survey and the Programme Analysis. Finally, in the seventh chapter the conclusions from the Research are discussed in the light of the initial aims and goals of the study and suggestions are made for future research which can both derive from, and continue to add to the issues which have been investigated in the present project. The present Research Study did not aim at validating or corroborating one or more hypotheses, as it used a mixed paradigm with different methodological approaches, which could not, as a result render thoroughly congruent or consistent results. It did seek, however, through the use of its progressive, longitudinal research model conducted at different time periods, to empirically draw to the surface, as consistently and extensively as possible, answers to the goals and aims established initially in the thesis, which answers have rendered complementary conclusions throughout the stages of the cross-paradigm used.

While the differences in health between cultures co-existing in the same country have been well researched, there has been insufficient attention paid to the definition of culture used in these studies. Typically the ethnicity of an individual has been determined along biological lines or by the country of origin. However, the culture with which an individual identifies may not be so clear: an individual may identify with a number of cultures, from the social group with whom they socialise, to the religion they follow. Measuring the degree to which an individual identifies with a particular culture (their cultural identity), would allow an assessment of how membership in that culture influences health outcomes. The present study investigated the relationship between the cultural identity (CI) of Māori and their health. The main hypothesis was that a higher CI would be positively correlated with better health. The relationships between demographic factors (e.g. age, gender, & socio-economic status (SES)), CI, and a number of health indicators (self rated health, smoking behaviour, alcohol consumption, & exercise/sporting behaviours) were also examined. The sample used in the present study (767 adult Māori) was a subset of the data collected the Te Hoe Nuku Roa Māori profiles project. The development of a CI measure incorporated seven cultural indicators: Whakapapa (ancestry), Marae Participation, Whanaū associations (extended family), Whenua Tipu (ancestral land), contact with Māori people, Use of te Reo (Māori language), and kai (food preferences). A series of hierarchical linear regressions found that CI was not directly related to health indicators in the present study. There were weak interactions between CI, age, and smoking behaviour; CI, home ownership, and involvement in sport; and age, Crowding and involvement in sport. Additional findings were that more Sporting Involvement/exercise was moderately correlated with improved health, and there was a weak relationship between CI and SES. It was speculated that the lack of significant findings may be due to a difference in the quality of participants’ CI: The CI measure did not distinguish between those who learn their culture and those who live their culture (each group tending to be in differing social and economic positions). Recommendations from the study were: Further validation of the CI measure, and assessment of the distribution of CI over urban/rural areas, SES and age; additional research into the relationship between young Māori smokers and their CI; assessing how the level of Sporting Involvement varies across the social and economic realities of Māori; and the development of appropriate measures utilising the whanaū/household as the unit of analysis.

Streszczenie:
In 1945, Leipzig was indeed the place to see the whole world, or at least all facets of the Second World War and its aftermath. The historic town centre of this city in the very heart of Germany had been largely destroyed in the first complete firestorm that the British bombing squads accomplished in December 1943. In total, 38 bombing raids on the city left large parts completely in ruins, including all cultural venues, dozens of churches, more than eighty percent of the trade fair buildings and forty percent of housing. Yet, Leipzig's military production survived intact, and the air armament factories went on producing right until the end of the war with the help of slave labour, namely some 20,000 concentration camp inmates, kept in the vicinity of Leipzig at Abtnaundorf, a satellite camp of Buchenwald.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the problems engendered by ongoing Western dominance in the field of francophone African publishing, with specific reference to Guinea and Senegal. This dominance raises complex issues of power, authority and voice that are familiar tropes in postcolonial analyses, but this thesis seeks to re-place such questions in a wider context, looking at the current material circumstances of the publishing industry and “socially contaminated” instances such as international donor funding and national language policy as a perspective. This allows the links between the two rather distinct fields of the cultural and the commercial to be explored.  The guiding theme is a critique of the argument for full indigenisation or africanisation of African publishing, a debate which is based on questions of language, critical authority and identity.  The thesis seeks to cut through the inevitable polemics raised by the dominance of Western publishers in African publishing, to clearly identify the problems thrown up by this imbalance, and to explore the ramifications for ‘African literature’.
