Streszczenie:
Pasambahan is one of well-known spoken discourse in Minangkabau. It is a medium for demonstrating speaking skills between the spokesperson of the host and the guests in several traditional events in Minangkabau. This research seems important to reveal the existence of symptoms of cohesion and semantic coherence in pasambahan discourse in Minangkabau ceremonies. Therefore, this present research aimed to find out the cohesive devices of the coherence relationship and the ways to achieve coherence in pasambahan. These two problems will be examined in terms of discourse analysis. Halliday and Hasan (1979) and Oshima and Hogue (2006) are reviewed to identify their claims about cohesion and coherence and apply them in pasambahan. The document review technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods, is employed in the study. The data in the form text of pasambahan were taken from written source, that is, pasambahan makan minum ‘Pasambahan done before starting the banquet’ taken from Minangkabau Panitahan Adat Alur book by Jamilus Jamin (2006). The results show that as a discourse, pasambahan shows symptoms of cohesion and coherence. The text coherence is achieved in several ways, namely (1) reiteration of key words, (2) the use of consistent pronoun, (3) the use of conjunction, and (4) arranging ideas in chronological order Ways 1 to 3 show a big role of cohesive devices in achieving text coherence, that is, the pattern of coherence that emerges is the coherence marked by linguistics units. Hence, it is an explicit relationship. Some marke rs found are repetition, synonymy, antonymy, pronoun, and conjunction. The coherence relationship can occur between words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. However, the way 4 shows the symptoms of coherence achieved without lingual markers (implicit), meaning that coherence is achieved through semantic relationships between sentences forming the text.

This review of articles follows the methodology of H. Snyder (2019) and based on a study that was a collection, analysis and comparison of relevant publications in the field of UNESCO cultural heritage studies over the past five years by quantitative methods in the Web of Science and Scopus repositories. The scientometric analysis made by means of the VOSviewer_1.6.16_ exe CitNetExplorer_1.0.0_exe programs made it possible to distinguish the most relevant and cited articles in a vast array of publications the most relevant and cited articles, verified by the scientific community, focused the attention of scientists on semantic “nodes”, that is, values that guide social practices. The undertaken study shows that the concepts of UNESCO heritage, and identity in connection with heritage, are not limited to the traditional framework of ethnos and governance, but include a wide range of social, natural and personal conditions, the study of which is of great theoretical and practical significance. The study of the actors involved, including natural and technical non-humans, makes it possible to take more effective conservation policies in the context of natural and environmental changes, world heritage management policies, identity policies in relation to place and heritage, reduce the distance between the “managers” of heritage and those for whom it is being managed, residents close to the heritage, civil society representatives who identify with the groups re-gathering around the heritage.

The article provides a discourse-analysis of the contemporary conflict over the preservation of Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments. The main participants in this conflict are 10 interest groups, which are reassembled each time in the process of articulating the discourse of their group. These actors are: UNESCO, local and federal governments, businesses, urban conservationists, residents and existing physical heritage. The article considers the dispositive of discourses that supports group formation and group identity. The results found are presented visually and graphically. From the media and social networks, the case of the destruction of the heritage is reconstructed and the discourse of city defenders is considered. The conflict of discourses and new types of antagonisms associated with different ones are reconstructed: the regime of affects, the visualization of the city, the development of the objective environment, the instruments of social action, and representation in the media and social networks. The article is intended for those interested in discursive analysis, actor-network theory, affect theory, world heritage, visualization of space, media, identity, and urbanism.

The article concerns dynamic aspects of scientific discourse understood as a domain of communication subject to cultural influences. The problem, inspired by Michel Foucault’s concept of archaeology of scientific reason, is presented through the ex- ample of alchemy, a specific phenomenon co-creating a scientific discourse both in the past and in the present. The relation of science with its discursive aspect (in various ways) with the past, and thus also with memory is undeniable, no matter how you consider the issue. This relation also affects the perception of science as such and scientific discourses, which is still an interesting field of observation. The discourse(s) on alchemy and its very status in the universe of communication confirm the dynamics of science and the discourses belonging to or co-constituting it, but in no way do they confirm the thesis of the teleological (in the sense of improving development) history of communication, including scientific communication.

In Australian public discourse food multiculturalism has been celebrated as a sign of the country’s openness to migrant cultures. Yet, as we show in this article, this apparent celebration of Australia’s ethnically diverse foodscape has emerged alongside a virulent culinary xenophobia at the level of public discourse. In particular, we identify how fears about Asian immigration are often expressed in a distaste for foreign food in the Australian media and official discourse. First, we demonstrate how an advertising campaign jointly funded by government and Australian industry deployed a xenophobic fear of contamination to encourage consumers to avoid food imports and buy Australian foods instead. We then look at how newspaper and television coverage of food poisoning in restaurants and food courts suggests a link between ethnicity and contamination. This analysis of a range of public attitudes to “foreign” foodstuffs highlights that the mainstream enjoyment of ethnic cuisines is not a panacea for long-standing xenophobic discourses.

There are relatively few studies that explore the interdisciplinarity between electronic literature and digital humanities research methods. The present paper addresses this lack by combining close reading and distant reading methodologies to analyze networks of cultural discourses in a corpus of 30 Latin American e-lit works published from 1995 to 2020. To conduct the research, three network graphs were created using Gephi, an open-source software for the exploration and analysis of network visualizations. The graphs study the following relations between the e-lit works and the cultural discourses: the frequency of primary, secondary and tertiary discourses, the degree of multi-discourse, and the degree of cultural discourse co-occurrence. The results show the appearance of unexpected discourse variations and new co-occurrence patterns, the benefits of network graphs for revealing e-lit works’ families, and the potential use of data visualization techniques to study e-lit databases. Overall, the paper demonstrates the utility of digital humanities research methods to further examine electronic literature materials.

Abstract Despite the intention for precision and accuracy, legal discourse is oftentimes complex, archaic and ambiguous - which gives rise to contentious interpretation. Moreover, little or no attention is paid to the cultural dimension of legal discourse, which plays a critical role in the translation and interpretation of legal texts, as well as in the application of law. This paper endeavours to illustrate the impact the culture, or, more precisely, legal culture has on the way legal texts are construed or translated and to present problems which arise in the interpretation, translation and application of law as a result of cultural diversities

This corpus-based study examines first-person verbs in Methods sections in English and Spanish. Quantitative analysis was based on rhetorical Move categories and qualitative analysis on linguistic profiles (collocation, colligation, semantic preference and semantic prosody). Both the English and Spanish subcorpora had more texts without first-person verbs than with this verb form. However, in the texts with this feature, the frequency was significantly higher in Spanish and the distribution of the rhetorical Moves associated with the first-person forms was also significantly different. The qualitative analysis revealed that in the English texts, the first-person signals the reasoned choice of a non-standard procedure (32 tokens) compared to only seven standard procedures, whereas in the Spanish texts the distribution was even (25 and 26 tokens, respectively). The results support cross-cultural differences in discourse functions that have implications for both translation and academic writing in cross-cultural contexts.

Streszczenie:
The article deals with the problem of lingua-cultural peculiarities of tourism discourse, contrastive analysis of English and Georgian tourism-related vocabulary and terminology, and outlook of teaching tourism discourse to students or people who are interested in the field of tourism. Tourism discourse is an independent type of discourse that has a specific addressee and it refers to communication among people who do not belong to a specific social or cultural group or language community. Therefore, our main focus will be addressed to reveal language peculiarities of English and Georgian tourism discourse to make the teaching process easier for any group of people who are interested in understanding the specific terms and expressions used in the texts. Revealing lingua-cultural differences and similarities between the chosen English and Georgian texts contributes to a better understanding of various cultures and traditions. Thus, the paper aims to research the vocabulary and terminology of the tourism discourse and to select the appropriate terminology for teaching tourism-related texts considering their lingua-cultural peculiarities. The research based on contrastive analysis of English and Georgian tourism-related texts shows that in professional and academic tourism discourses certain terms and special vocabulary are observed, in public tourism discourse - evaluative vocabulary and emotional connotations prevail. Lingua-cultural analysis of the tourism-related English and Georgian texts showed that they are characterized by an abundance of borrowed words and lacunas, although the use of idioms is rare. The conclusions drawn in the paper contribute to the further research of tourism texts. In addition, it should be noted that the work is interdisciplinary, and it will be useful not only for specialists working in the tourism industry but for philologists and teachers teaching English to students qualifying in tourism..

Streszczenie:
At the moments of bifurcations, random social factors prevail, ensuring the multivariance of social development. The socio-cultural processes taking place in society represent a complex self-organizing system. Socio-cultural changes occur when the previous ordering of social ties does not guarantee the effectiveness of the functioning of the system. The article is devoted to the analysis of various points of view on the socio-cultural process and its determinants. It is shown that society, as a self-rganizing system, constantly changes regimes, implements variability at different social levels. Socio-cultural changes lead to the transformation of society in its morphology, the creation of social forms and structures. Their determinants are mass actions of people. The interpretation of the socio-cultural process reflects the evolution of socio-philosophical thinking. In most approaches, researchers were based on the belief that the laws of the social world are similar to the laws of nature, that society dominates the individual. One of the main features of socio-cultural processes, since they belong to a wide class of self-organization processes, is that they do not have a permanent structure over time and that the changes occurring in them are mostly spontaneous and only partially depend on external influences.

Vytautas Magnus UniversityThis paper analyses the development of post-war Japan’s cultural diplomacy since 1945, dividing it into four stages. It raises questions about what government institutions have been conducting cultural diplomacy, what the main international challenges have been, what communication tools have been used, and what kind of cultural discourses were prevalent during a particular stage. Special emphasis is put on the division of traditional versus popular cultural discourses within the cultural diplomacy of Japan, mainly concentrating on the important shift in this aspect that occurred at the beginning of the 21st century. This shift was marked by the government’s increasing shift towards popular culture discourse and the deliberate exploitation of that to promote Japan in the world.

In this light, architects are perceived as active agents continually contributing models of national identity through architectural forms, expressions, materials, and narratives.

The discourse of Cultural China, formerly initiated by Tu Wei-ming two decades ago when China was at the crossroads, has played some major functions. First, it has affirmed the Chinese cultural identity. Furthermore, it offers an alternative lens for reading China in a non-ideological manner. Third, it has offered an alternative model of economic development which is sustainable. Finally, it has offered an alternative model for sustaining humanity. However, given the historic limitations of the concept of Cultural China such as stasis and homogeneity, the discourse of Cultural China should be transformed by a new concept such as Chiglobalization. Chiglobalization, an active global campaign of communication about Chinese culture, would hopefully integrate both the Eastern and the Western cultures into the cultural foundation and texture of the global village.

The bond between a driver and his truck has been the subject of many famous films. If not actual adoration of the vehicle, it certainly is the destiny shared between a living human and a running machine, both heading for a common destination. Who and what else can replace this bond? Here, we see the truck bearing decorations, bumper sticks, script, and pictures of animate and inanimate objects all reflecting the taste and psyche of the driver. This study aims to introduce a thematic analysis into this picturesque look of over a thousand trucks with specific focus on scripts borne by trailers based on the assumption that content of scripts would be representing inner worlds of truck drivers. Photographed as well as internet-based data related to vehicles provided the source for this study. Scripts were thematised, and categorized observing nationality of origin of license plates. With its findings, the study yields valuable results regarding values and beliefs truck drivers of different nationalities hold to themselves. A variety of psychological profiles, harboring feelings such as sadness, joy, dejection, rejection, love, disappointments, anger, vengeance, etc., all expressed through scripts was also surfaced in this study.

However, the focus of the interview is on the core concepts of ‘discourse networks’, ‘the military-industrial complex’, and ‘technology’, arguably the three central themes of Kittler’s work to date. As the title of the interview indicates, the idea of ‘cultural mathematics’ is also considered important in this account of Kittler’s particular contribution to social and cultural theory, although this and related notions are critically appraised together with an assessment of their theoretical, social and cultural impact.

AbstractThe paper addresses the problem of Russian-Ukrainian asymmetric relations as revealed in the struggle of two discourses—the discourse of imperial dominance and the discourse of national/nationalistic resistance and liberation. Critical discourse analysis is applied to deconstruct the imperial discourse as a major obstacle for the normalization of Russian-Ukrainian relations. Postcoloniality is suggested as a desirable condition for both Russian and Ukrainian cultures to achieve internal freedom and eliminate colonial stereotypes and anti-colonial mobilization, respectively.

Streszczenie:
The discourse of the Yemeni TV broadcasters has undergone major changes since the Arab Spring in 2011. Moreover, since the outbreak of Civil War in 2015, this discourse has been diverse and has become a clear reflection of the contexts in which it is produced. This article analyses Yemeni media discourse by analysing the titles of news reports published on YouTube by five Yemeni TV channels belonging to five diversified discourses in terms of political, ideological, cultural and social orientation. The article adopts discourse framing as a methodological tool, with which we can address media discourse and thus reveal its social, political and cultural contexts. The article concludes that Yemeni TV broadcasters’ discourse depends on a limited number of keywords that have a cognitive and cultural balance in Yemeni society, words originally taken from cultural, religious and social backgrounds in the collective memory of Yemen. Knowing these keywords can be employed in different dimensions. While it can contribute to developing the recipient awareness, it can also help to raise the degree of professionalism in media performance in Yemen, especially in the stage of peace-building and post-war.

Streszczenie:
Discourse is the common sense language that represents the society, culture, social groups, group behaviours, socio-cultural identities and political ideologies. It signifies communication as a whole. Media gives space for people’s voices in its programs and publications. In the same way, media is a common representative of the voices of all the ethnic communities regardless of majority or minority in its true principle. However, the languages and voices of all ethnic communities have not been represented in the discourse of government media in Nepal. In such a situation, this research aimed to; examine the representation of ethnic-minority languages in the discourses of government media of Nepal; critically assess the socio-cultural and political cognitions of the ethnic-minorities throughout the discourses in those media, and; identify the various identities constructed by the speakers of ethnic-minority languages through the discourses in government media. The finding of the study shows that our of 125 languages spoken in Nepal only 22 ethnic languages are represented in the discourse of Nepalese government media and the ethnic minority felt themselves being included within the national discourse when they found their discourses being represented in public media.

The academic literature contains an increasing quantity of references to Smart Heritage. These references are at the intersection of the smart city and heritage disciplines and primarily within informative, interpretative, and governance applications. The literature indicates the future expansion of the Smart Heritage discourse into additional applications as researchers apply smart technology to more complex cultural environments. The Smart Heritage discourse signals an advancement in the literature beyond Digital Heritage and Virtual Heritage discourses as Smart Heritage pivots on the active curatorship of heritage experiences by automated and autonomous technologies, rather than technology as a passive digital tool for human-curated experiences. The article comprehensively reviews the emergent Smart Heritage discourse for the first time in the academic literature, and then offers a contemporary definition that considers the literature to date. The review and definition draw on literature across the contributing disciplines to understand the discourse’s development and current state. The article finds that Smart Heritage is an independent discourse that intertwines the autonomous and automatic capabilities and innovation of smart technologies with the contextual and subjective interpretation of the past. Smart Heritage is likely the future vanguard for research between the technology and heritage disciplines.

The translation equivalence between龍/lung and dragon as well as夷/i and barbarian embodies the way of discourse power competition between China and the United Kingdom of Great Britain with different discourse pedigrees and discourse systems. The translation equivalence between龍/lung and dragon was constructed by means of mutation and discourse rewriting, and the political implication and cultural value of龍/lung in Chinese context were ablated. The equivalence between 夷/i and barbarian in the English context was established through the translation manipulation of the British, and the meaning of夷/i was separated from the Chinese historical context forcibly. The British operated discourse mutation on core Chinese political discourses via translation manipulation to weaken the subjectivity of China and bring China into the modern international discourse system dominated by the West, providing support for the expansion and colonization of British imperial discourse. This research provides reference for dealing with the cultural characteristics and universality, and the relationship between subject and object of discourse in the translation of contemporary Chinese discourse.

Streszczenie:
The article considers the place and role of discourse in human life. The basis for this is the im- portance of language and speech as one of the leading features of humanity. Thanks to language, a person’s own reality is formed, which has a semantic character. Four dimensions of the effect of speech in the constitution of the human world are identified. These are: the function of se- mantic productivity and reliability of speech; function of organization and accumulation of ex- perience; the function of normativity of human life; personalization function. The acquisition of the discourse format by speech is associated with the assertion of significance and substantiation of the validity of judgments. These qualities of discursive practices are inseparable from their normative effect. If speech as such is dominated by the effect of communication and statements, the discourse is primarily a semantic ordering of reality. It always creates, transforms or cancels a certain semantic order. The thesis on the growing role of discursive practices in the contempo- rary world is substantiated. This is due to the epoch-making changes in human life, namely the end of the era of production. The whole history of human civilization can be represented as the development of production (from the invention of the production mode of economy in the form of the Neolithic revolution). The end of the era of production means at the same time the actu- alization of the great historical task of man’s appeal to himself, to his own nature and organic ability to live. Taking care of yourself, not the conditions of existence (external goods) will be a priority for human development in the near historical perspective. However, this reorientation of human existence is confronted with the contradictory impact of virtualization of reality for man, which entails changes in the classical vocation of discourse. In this regard, the effect of discourses in the highly powerful information environment of today is analyzed, which is becoming the leading force of global reality in the form of information power.
