Ruud, Arild Engelsen. "Socio-cultural changes in rural West Bengal". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1995. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2449/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The emergence of broad rural support in West Bengal for the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) is here studied through the history (1960 to present) of two villages in Burdwan district. The focus is on the relationship between the dynamics of village politics and political and ideological changes of the larger polity. Village politics constitutes an important realm of informal rules for political action and public participation where popular perceptions of wider political events and cultural changes are created. The communist mobilization of the late 1960s followed from an informal alliance formed between sections of the educated (and politicized) middle-class peasantry and certain groups (castes) of poor. The middle-class peasantry drew inspiration from Bengal's high-status and literary but radicalized tradition. However, the establishment and dynamics of the alliance, at the local level, can only be understood within the normative framework of the village. The poor appeared previously as marginal to public exercise of village affairs, but were nonetheless able to manipulate resources available to them (numbers, assertion, norms) and thus achieve some leverage vis-a-vis village leaders dependent on man-support or "moral economy" sentiments for legitimacy. The interests of these groups of poor, particularly of the social or cultural kind since the material resources available were very limited, became crucial in the bonds village leaders sought to create to retain their support. Following on this practice, also the CPM's local party leadership, in the 1980s and 1990s, consistently confirmed social aspirations and status considerations. This leads to the conclusions that not only do communist movements too depend on considerations of social status, honours, and symbolic displays of respect but that the scope for change and the manner in which the communist movement can function at the local level derive from popular perceptions, formed and enacted in villages.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the mobile phone culture in Bangkok, Thailand, and the way mobile phone can be seen to represent an expression of modernity and cultural changes among Thai middle class teenagers at large. The idea of modernity has been explored in terms of Tween and Teen subcultures' incorporation of mobile phones to form and create their cultural identities as cool and modern in different social settings, such as homes, schools and department stores. The material data probes these social interactions in relation to the demographic and psychographic backgrounds of Thai teenagers, who employ cool brands to display their cool selves by using the generations of mobile phones technology to enhance their communicative patterns, blurring the boundaries of public and private spaces. The symbolic meanings of mobile phones i.e. necessity-luxury and fashion as symbols of modernity bring about social and cultural changes, as well as consumerism and leisure activities which can be showed as habitus. It further considered Thai teenagers' social relations alongside advertising representations elaborated issues of modernity to show to their consumption patterns and cultural identities. My ethnographic data suggests that the distinction Tween (9-14 years old) and Teen (15-18 years old) subcultures, and the university students use mobile phones as symbols of modernity to create their identities are relevant to fashion and social emulation among family and peer in terms of purchases, opinions, and activities. Thai teenagers perceived mobile phones as new of intimacy rather than merely as tools of connectivity, indicating social status and serving as means of seeking pleasure. New identities in terms of Gig and Deck Neaw subculture are elaborated to show how global interacts with local through their subcultures in ways that they incorporate fashionable mobile phones to form their new identities and deviant behaviours as resistance to traditional norm in Thai society.

Streszczenie:
Many family businesses will have to change owner during the coming years as those born in the 1940s will retire. Due to the fact that the younger generations follow their own pro-fessions and are not always interested in taking over the family business, complications may occur for the owner manager. In such cases the owners will have to take another action in passing over the company. The case of Jonsons Byggnads AB is a clear example of where the previous owner‟s sons followed their own passion of profession and were not interested to take over the family firm, which had been operating for around 50 years. This resulted in an external sale of the corporation to Fadi Babil, who today is the new sole owner of the company. This thesis will investigate how Jonsons Byggnads AB´s culture has been influenced by the external sale. What factors have changed within the company and why these changes oc-curred, are further discussed issues.A case study approach was chosen to achieve the purpose. Through a qualitative method an analysis will be implemented on the empirical data with the use of theoretical frame-work. The case concerns the corporate culture in Jonson‟s Byggnads AB. The empirical da-ta was collected through interviews and a survey. The results from the interviews and surveys showed that changes in Jonsons Byggnads AB‟s organizational culture have occurred. These changes have not harmed the company in any specific way although one can notice that the company is more focused on success and expansion of the company.

Young people are arguably facing complex life situations in their transition into adulthood and navigating their life trajectories in a highly individualised way. For youth in post-compulsory education, their training years have been extended, their years of dependency have increased and they have greater individual choice compared to previous youth generations. This study develops an understanding of the process of individualisation applied to youth in late modernity and explores it in relation to the neo-liberal climate. It compares the life situation of this youth generation with youth in the early 1960s, brought up with more predefined traditional conditions, cemented in traditional social structures. The processes that led to generational changes in the experiences of youth in the last forty-five years are examined, linked to structural transformations that influence subjective experiences. Specifically, the shifts of the conditions of youth in post-compulsory education are studied in relations to socio-economic, technological and cultural changes. This study discusses the Western Anglo-American model of changes in youths life experiences and examines how it (mis)fits in a more conservative Catholic Mediterranean setting. The research investigates conditions in Malta, an ex-colonial small island Mediterranean state, whose peculiarities include its delayed economic development compared to the Western setting. The core of the research comprises of primary data collection using in-depth, ethnographical interviews, with two generations of youth in different socio-historical context; those who experienced their youth in the early 1960s and youth in the late 2000s. This study concludes that the concept of individualisation does indeed illuminate the experiences of youth in late modernity especially when compared to the experiences of youth forty-five years ago. However the concept of individualisation is applied in a glocalised manner in line with the peculiarities of Malta that has lagged behind mainstream developments in Western Europe and still retained traditional features. Building on the individualisation concept, I use an empirically grounded concept of compromised choices to describe the increase in the bargaining of choice happening at different fronts in the life experiences of youth, especially in the life biography of women, choices in education and the job market and choices in consumption.

Streszczenie:
The world was shocked by the Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979 because it was unexpected and out of keeping with the deposed Shah's attempts at secular modernisation. This thesis attempts to make sociological sense of the implications of the Revolution for education in Iran in terms of ideological influences. The research reported in this thesis attempts to discover the nature of the social and cultural changes that occurred following the 1979 Revolution. Adapting Max Weber's interpretative approach, it focuses on the changing patterns of shared meanings and social relations in schools in one area of North West Iran. Taking a deliberately one-sided approach to educational change, this thesis isolates the impact of Islamic ideology on schools in the area where ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in 1995-96. Interviews, participant observation in schools, questionnaires and analysis of official documents were the chosen methods of research. The aim was to discover how Islamic ideology has been promulgated and how it has affected the day-to-day social relations of school teachers, pupils and administrators as well as their relations with parents and local authority officials. The main findings not only confirm the pervasiveness of Islamic ideology in Iranian schools but also document its influence over matters such as curriculum design and delivery, the segregation of the sexes in schools, and the teachers' conditions of work and professional development. Nevertheless, there is also evidence that the stated aims of educational reform were not always achieved and that some changes were ironic. The findings also showed that the recent history of change in Iranian schools calls for a flexible understanding of such notions as modernity, tradition, patrimonialism, and bureaucracy. Iran has certainly tried to modernise its educational system since 1979 but it has done so in ways which challenge much of the received wisdom about modernisation processes.

Streszczenie:
This project describes NASA's culture during two important time periods (1958-1972) and (1996-2004) and explains its relative fit with its system components-task, people, resources, and structure. The open-system model is used to explain how system components affect culture and how culture affects them. During the first period (1958- 1972), NASA was established and it landed the first man on the moon, a remarkable accomplishment given the advances in science and technology required to complete this mission. During the second period (1996-2004), the Columbia accident occurred, causing NASA's image to be tarnished and its credibility with key stakeholders to be compromised. To conduct this research, books, online resources, newspaper article, technical and investigative reports and theses provided the main sources of information. Project results indicate that culture alone is not the only contributory factor to NASA's performance. The space agency's technical culture closely aligned with system components enabled the organization to complete its moon-landing mission. However, NASA culture changed due to alterations in the system components. A misalignment between culture and its system components occurred during the second period, causing the Columbia accident. Therefore, the alignment between culture and other components is essential for NASA to perform its missions effectively. NASA leadership should monitor and assess this alignment to help prevent future mishaps.

Streszczenie:
This study investigates innovative sound sequences in Japanese. A relatively large number of phonological changes have occurred in the short period of time since WWII, mainly due to an influx of loanwords from English. However, innovative sound sequences have not been accepted in Japanese uniformly. This fact raises two questions. Why are some innovative sound sequences fully accepted in Japanese while others are still foreignisms? Why are certain sound sequences acceptable in one situation, but not so in others?Previous studies on innovative sound sequences in modern standard Japanese have tried to solve these problems by establishing innovative lexical strata, such as "Assimilated Foreign" and "Unassimilated Foreign." However, this study found that the distribution of innovative sound sequences is much more complex than previously believed. Furthermore, in many cases, the acceptance of innovative sound sequences is word-by-word or speaker-by-speaker. This suggests that the cause of the distribution of innovative sound sequences in Japanese is better described as an intricate interaction among various extra-grammatical factors, such as processes of borrowing, speakers' socioeconomic status, influence of English education, acoustic and articulatory phonetics, the writing system, and historical linguistic factors.

With the Urban Renewal Authority’s H18 redevelopment project, buildings within its project boundary, except those to be preserved, will be demolished and redeveloped. Since the study area is outside the project boundary, the street itself and hawker stalls on the street will continue exist. With the new structures and land use pattern behind, there will be impacts on the hawker stalls, the hawkers, as well as the Street Market. The outbreak of a serious fire incident at Fa Yuen Street on 30 Nov 2011 had called up the public concern on the fire risk induced by hawker stalls and its sustainability over time. By cultural mapping of the Cabinet-type fixed pitch on Graham Street Market, a heritage inventory is prepared for identification and analysis of the changes of hawker stalls as resulted from the above two transformative events. Further analysis on the sustainability of the hawker stalls and the Street Market has been made with consideration of historic cultural landscape approach in preservation of this hundreds year old Street Market.

This thesis aims to answer the following question: What impacts does exposure to different cultural lifestyles have on one’s own consumption behaviour and what factors influence these changes? Pizza, more specifically pizza consumption in Italy is used as a case study to answer this question. Here, the impacts exposure to this cultural lifestyle in Italy had on visitors is analysed. In order to model such behavioural implications, our research is first grounded on multiple theories: Sacred and Profane, Authenticity, Country of Origin, Subcultures of Consumption and Cultural Distance. Following this, a two-phased research is carried out, consisting of multiple interviews. Based on which, firstly after the first phase, the ‘sacred’ and ‘profane’ in relation to pizza is defined. Then finally, based on the other theories and the findings from the interviews in the second phase, a model that seeks to answer the research question is created.

Since the age of the Grand Tour at least, artists have travelled to foreign lands to make art that responds to and reflects their experiences. In the role of the ‘artist-tourist’ mode, the artist is a tourist who makes art as a result of touristic activities. In this exegesis, I will refer to my alter-ego ‘Captain Eric’, a character inspired equally by the mythology of my own heritage and by the urge to creatively re-interpret identity. Captain Eric is valuable as a character through whom I am able to operate as an artist-tourist using unconventional strategies to negotiate and critically reflect on cultural changes in the contemporary global landscape. I use this character to discuss two recent projects that took place in Indonesia and Finland where he functioned in the capacity of artist-tourist. This research explores how the artist-as-tourist may navigate through and operate effectively in the contemporary landscape of this rapidly changing globalised world where cultures are becoming increasingly hybridised.

As a result of their interactions and interdependencies with people, agroecosystems contribute to the creation of cultural ecosystem services (CES) such as rural identity, traditional knowledge, and ceremonies related to cultivation. However, global agroecosystems are currently undergoing vast land-use changes –such as intensive agriculture, land abandonment, and urbanization – which are influenced by economic, policy, and market forces. Along with these trends, environmental conflicts are emerging between stakeholders with differing interests in land areas. This dissertation holistically examines CES by critically studying how CES, in the light of relational values, are disrupted by land-use changes, and further identifying environmental conflicts arising from changes in CES. The study begins at the global level, then uses Bulgaria as a case study at both the regional level and community levels, with particular emphasis on rural policies. Results of the research indicate that agroecosystems provide multiple interrelated CES that constitute global agricultural heritage. Further, land-use changes have a significant impact on culture and tradition, mainly at the expense of farmers and rural communities, and therefore lead to open and latent forms of environmental conflict. In the Bulgarian case study, stakeholders’ evaluation of CES at both regional and farm levels indicate CES evaluation is often disrupted due to land-use changes. Moreover, concerns about CES at the community level can emerge as environmental conflicts that are expressed openly thorough demonstrations or protests, provided the community’s political power for environmental management is high. When the degree of power is low, such CES-related conflicts are latent, expressed with a high importance placed on rural identity. Indeed, this study shows environmental conflicts over agricultural land appropriation are intertwined with cultural forms of dispossession. On the basis of these findings, this dissertation argues global agricultural heritage is at risk of being lost due to land-use changes. More holistic land-use policies at different governance scales are needed that consider both the critical importance of local communities and the CES they co-create for preservation and nourishment of rural areas. Rural people and co-created CES play a fundamental role in defending ecosystem services distribution issues and promoting social, ecological, and economic well-being. Therefore, the participation of local stakeholders is important in land-use decision-making, and CES recognition in science and policy as pathways for the environmental preservation and social stability of marginalized rural areas.

Music is an ever-changing cultural reflection. It is deeply integrated into our society, ubiquitous in movies, television shows, restaurants, sport venues, churches and a plethora of other places. This thesis proposes that we consider the lyrics in popular music, as determined by Billboards Hot 100 chart, as a natural medium to analyze the changes in culture over the past half-century. Using this collection of lyrics, we analyze the change in relative frequency of individual words over time, and compare to works of literature. Furthermore, we use the ranking in the Top 100 as a metric with which to explore the relationship between usage of particular words and the popularity of the respective songs. We find that our data coincides with a previous hypothesis that the relative happiness of lyrics has decreased over time, and find that this also applies to the relative happiness of popular music.

Understanding the place is an important step in cultural heritage management. Conservation Plan of James Kerr, which was derived from the principles of Burra Charter, pointed out that in preparing conservation plan for a heritage place, we should start from understanding the place. This includes gathering both documentary and physical evidences for coordination and analysis before assessing and stating the significance of the heritage place. This information will eventually become part of the conservation plan. Understanding is a process. It first involves the identification of the landscape assets of the place. Without the background information of the place, the formulation of any conservation plan may not be able to reflect the cultural significance of the place. Thus, all conservation works should start with understanding the place. King George V Memorial Park (the Park) located between Hospital Road and High Street at Sai Ying Pun of Hong Kong Island is a very special place in the western part of Hong Kong. The place where the Park is located, evolutes with the urban development at Sai Ying Pun and eventually becomes the major cultural landscape of the district. To understanding the Park, it is important to understand the historical development of the place and how it evolves into the Park. The original setting and context of the place can still be found on site. Investigation of these traits may reveal the historical importance of the place and lead to the understanding of the changing cultural landscape there. The layout and masonry walls of the Park exhibit certain trait of military structures. Through investigation, the wall was found to be the remnant of an important medical complex in early Hong Kong. The wall may help in reconstructing the early medical history and the development in the district and also the whole territory. However, the historical background of the site was fading out and only a few character-defining elements could still be traced. With the information available, it is suggest5ed to re-define the heritage significance of the Park. With a clear understanding on the historical facts and background of the sites, it is hoped that proper conservation programme may be formulated to address the need.

ENGLISH: The South African government has a responsibility in the rendering of essential services to satisfy certain needs of the community. Public managers employed by the South African civil service ought to possess specific abilities and qualities to manage the civil service effectively in a rapidly changing environment. It is the responsibility of each public manager to manage the allocated organizational unit under his authority. Public managers may not conduct the administrative and public management activities in a random way. The normative guidelines of honouring the political supremacy, public accountability and responsibility, application of the administrative law, honouring community values, upholding high ethical norms, as well as social equality and justice should continuously be maintained by the public manager. The objective of this paper is to determine the role of the public manager in developing an organizational culture. The meaning of the word “organization”, “organizational development” and “organizational culture” has a direct influence on the objective of this paper and therefore these words have been clearly defined and explained. The civil service is dynamic and the departments are subjedt to change. This leads to re-organization, which in turn will influence the organizational culture. Organizations can not be reformed in a similar manner, and therefore, cultures vary among different organizations. Groups with strong subcultures may develop within the existing organizational culture and the public manager should utilize these subcultures to the advantage of the organization by establishing, for example, healthy competition among these groups. A “best” technique to manage an organizational culture does not exist, and each public manager should select a technique or combination of techniques appropriate to the specific situation. Public managers should convey a positive attitude towards the organizational culture and towards his/her subordinates. The public manager in the South African civil service functions in a milieu that holds many challenges. Environmental factors in the civil service constantly change, and changes in the political, social, economic and technological environments influence the organizational culture and has to be managed in such a way that it is advantageous to the organization and society. The changing environment, in which the South African Public Service operates, demands the management of an organizational culture. Public managers should develop a cultural awareness and realize that organizational, cultural and strategic change processes should be managed in order to reach the set objectives.

China’s society has been changing since 1979, when the open-door policy was implemented. Many great events in politics, economy and culture have brought lots of diversities to the Chinese younger generation who were born after 1979. These diversities have led to a cultural value change from collectivism to individualism among this generation (Cao, 2009; Sun & Wang, 2010; Moore, 2005). Cultivation analysis theory may be appropriate to explain this phenomenon as the open-door policy allowed American and European TV programs and other media products come into China. Effective advertising should cater to its audience in order to effectively persuade them to purchase its merchandise or service (Zhang & Harwood, 2004; Chang, 2006). If the cultural value of the Chinese younger generation has changed, it may be reflected in the commercial content of successful advertisers. This research conducted a content analysis of Chinese commercials, comparing the commercial contents in recent years to approximately ten years ago. It examined if the individualistic factors were more frequently showed in the commercials in recent years than approximately ten years ago, with the consideration to merchandise type and production place. Research results exhibited an increase of individualism revealing in Chinese commercials from approximately 2006 to 2016.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates the understanding and practices of contemporary Mongolian management since the 1990s. In particular, it focusses on the shared experiences of local managing practitioners in Mongolia by exploring the conceptions of a manager, management, and managerial roles from the participants’ perspective and the contextual influencing factors on their understanding. Since the 1990s Mongolia has undergone a series of cultural and institutional changes in relation to its political, economic and societal development. The country has fluctuated between having the fastest growing economy and the world’s worst performing currency. Mongolia itself has become the land of opportunity for many by attracting foreign direct investment, however, the knowledge of local management practice is as yet little understood as there have been no academic or empirical studies conducted in English before. Therefore, this research aims to build an understanding of the concept of management in Mongolia by examining the narratives of thirty five local managers in relation to their experiences during and after the socialist period. Moreover, it investigates the contextual influencing factors from practitioners’ perspectives with an ethnographic approach. This qualitative study draws on interviews with three groups of local managers in Mongolia, who are described as socialist-era, transitional-era and non-native managing practitioners. There are some similarities and differences amongst these identified groups, but each was distinguishable by their formal training, work ethic and management approach. Furthermore, this research found that the intertwining contextual factors of a nomadic cultural heritage, socialist legacy, and the pressures of the current economic and societal changes and political interference influence management thinking in equal measure in contemporary Mongolia. The importance of this study lies in its theoretical and empirical contributions. By evaluating the relationship between classical management literature and indigenous management concepts with a focus on the varieties of contextual factors, this study attempts to provide an original insight into non-Western management practices. It aims to extend the current theories of crossvergence, indigenous management studies, and understand the nature of managerial work in a cross-cultural context. By carrying out the first academic study to examine Mongolian management perspectives in English, it contributes empirically to global management knowledge, and to the local business community.

Streszczenie:
Apart from the obvious and visible effects on the economy and the physical environment, tourism can contribute to social and cultural changes in host societies. Many host communities put their hopes on tourism as an economic driver and development tool. However, it is still unclear whether tourism is more useful or harmful towards host destinations. It is obvious that international tourism would be a short pathway to make the transition from a traditional way of life to a modem form of society. Many studies show that destinations consider these changes positively in terms of modernisation and affluence. However, the interaction between two different cultures creates change processes over time, especially in an Eastern context where the modernisation process is Western in orientation. Prior studies on residents' attitudes and perceptions toward socio-cultural impacts of tourism identify various relationships. However, much less analysis has focused on the influence of cultural factors. Additionally, most previous studies focus on residents' attitudes and perceptions towards tourism development through quantitative surveys with cluster or factor analysis based on a limited range of predetermined attributes. Few studies explore the changes from an indigenous culture perspective. The aim of this research is to develop a better understanding of the residents of a Thai beach resort's attitudes towards tourism, in particular their perceptions of the socio-cultural impacts of tourism development and the associated behavioural changes in their society. Koh Samui was chosen for this investigation as it is a self-contained model of a beach resort development where there are sociocultural impacts. A constructivist paradigm approach was adopted. Consideration is given in the literature review and the methodology chapters to issues related to conducting research in the Thai context. Choosing qualitative research serves as a bridge, which can link theory, practice and deeper findings. This research employed participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The background of the local residents and local context in Koh Samui were explored as well as local residents' behaviour patterns and the interaction between them and tourists on a day to day basis. Following a period of immersion in the community, residents' and local authorities' perceptions and attitudes toward the socio-cultural impacts of tourism development in Koh Samui were investigated through semi-structured interviews. Isan migrant workers emerged from the data analysis as a key issue due to the fact that local people believed these migrant workers were responsible for the majority of socio-cultural impacts in Koh Samui including demographic changes, rise in crime, drug abuse, prostitution and AIDS infection, demonstration effects, and increased poverty and slums. Consequently, local people were offended by and fearful of Isan migrant workers. In addition, the analysis suggests that Isan migrant workers had adapted to more readily to tourist culture. Acculturation and social identity theory are explored to explain this situation. Social identity suggests that Isan migrant workers were out-group of Koh Samui as well as sense of belongingness as a self-esteem was a key answer to this adaptation in Isan migrant workers. Buddha's teaching and the Thai avoidance of confrontation are the main players in order to reflect on how Thai people cope with socio-cultural changes. The majority of local residents in Koh Samui are Buddhist and this has taught them to accept problems and learn how to live with them. A fundamental factor is an Eastern world view. In Koh Samui, it was necessary for local people to accept tourism and cope with socio-cultural changes in their community so as not to reject the apparent benefits of tourism. The findings illustrate many contexts in which local people are led by their cultural background to accept tourism. Following a crisis in local agriculture which was dependent on coconuts, tourism seemed to be the only way for local people to survive. It is, therefore, difficult for them to blame tourism as a cause of the main socio-cultural problems in their community. Therefore, they try to apportion blame elsewhere, in this case on the Isan migrants. Buddhism is followed by ninety-five percent of Thai people. It is undoubted that Buddhism has a strong influence on everyday life of Thai people, their society and culture. The implications of Thai cultural conditions and responses in the everyday life that were emerged from the analysis are discussed including Thai loose social structure, cool heart behaviour, the concept of Choei, face-saving and avoidance of confrontation, Boonkhun relationships, Kreng-jai value, Num-jai value, and brotherhood or helpful relationships. The importance of exploring an indigenous cultural perspective is discussed together with lessons that can be learned for tourism development and its socio-cultural impacts.

Since around 2011, Bongo Flava musicians use significantly more English in their lyrics than in the previous years, particularly in love songs. This article documents and describes this new trend and discusses the reasons for the change in language use. It reveals that the new development is indicative of a transformation of Bongo Flava towards pop, caused by changes in the domestic market on the one hand and by a growing outward-looking market orientation on the other. These changes are demanding new ways of constructing identities through the use of language

Streszczenie:
Aim: This thesis reconstructs vegetation dynamics at four key cave sites in the Western Mediterranean region (Taforalt Cave and Rhafas Cave in north-east Morocco, and Gorham's Cave and Vanguard Cave in Gibraltar), spanning the Last Interglacial-Glacial Period (c.130-13ka BP). Furthermore, it tests the hypothesis that climatic forcing played ~ major role in cultural transitions and possibly human extinction in the Late Pleistocene. Location: North-east Morocco and Gibraltar. Methods: Macroscopic charcoal, phytoliths, and charred seeds were analysed using qualitative and quantitative statistical methods. These were compared at intra-site, inter-site and inter-regional scales. Results: Results from north-east Morocco (spanning c.125- f3ka BP) suggest that local vegetation shifted on numerous occasions over the Last Glacial Period. MIS 5d-a and MIS4 vegetation was characterised by a decline in temperate Quercus deciduous and expansion in cool Cedrus atlantica, while MIS 3 and MIS 2 vegetation was largely dominated by Juniperus sp.lTetraclinis articulata, with phases of ecological stress characterised by the expansion of Pinus halepensis and Quercus evergreen. C3 grasses were dominant throughout the record. In contrast, results from Gibraltar (intermittently spanning c.130-25ka BP) ~ showed no significant changes in vegetation dynamics during this period, with (Q) vegetation dominated by Pinus pinea, with lesser frequencies of Pistacia sp., Juniperus sp., and Quercus sp. Main conclusions: This thesis provides the first evidence of Last InterglacialGlacial vegetation dynamics in north-east Morocco and Gibraltar. Results from Morocco seem to show a good association with proposed climatic variations during this time interval, while specific vegetation shifts were also broadly synchronous with cultural transitions. In contrast, the Gibraltar record suggests that vegetation remained quite stable throughout the Last Glacial Period. As such, this thesis supports the suggestion that Gibraltar was an environmental refuge during the Last Glacial Period.

This work aims to describe and to analyze the grammatical class of the adjectives in the Brazilian Portuguese and its respective changes of semantic loads, when they function as adnominal adjunct and appear before the subject. It was verified that the Brazilian normative grammars of Portuguese, as well as didactic books aiming the teaching of Portuguese for foreigners, in general, do not make reference to the semantic changes that occur within this grammatical class when it is placed before the subject. The theoretical basis of this dissertation focus, firstly, in the description of the grammatical class of the adjective in the theoretical and grammatical compendiums destined to the teaching of Portuguese for both Brazilians and foreigners. In a second part, the emphasis is given to the studies developed in Pragmatics, using the concepts of language and discourse, mainly through the light that is shed by the Philosophy of Language, and the Linguistic Anthropology that sees culture as a system of practices. Finally, the research deals with the analysis of the adjectives found in written texts samples, taken from advertisements or journalistic pieces, that demonstrate cultural aspects of the daily life in Brazil. The main contribution of this work is to provide to the PL2-E teaching professionals a deeper reflection about the teaching/learning process of the Portuguese grammar as a second language for foreigners.

At the heart of this exegesis is the city-bush gap and the rivalry and stereotypes that gap has generated. I acknowledge how and why our national identity evolved from the writing of the 1890s but I argue that most current artists, particularly novelists, have failed to incorporate the ongoing cultural, societal and industrial changes that have occurred since, particularly in the last thirty years. I assert that the majority of artists still refer to and draw inspiration from established, inaccurate myths and stereotypes rather than the bush and Australian characters of today. Through examining three texts, Kate Grenville's The Idea of Perfection (Picador, Sydney, 1999), Christos Tsiolkas's Loaded (Random House, Sydney, 1995) and Silences Long Gone (Picador, Sydney, 1998) by Anson Cameron, I also point out how most artists in general have failed to keep pace with changes in the bush city cross-culture. My exegesis attempts to give an account of some deficiencies in contemporary Australian literature. In the creative component of this project, Summer at Mount Hope (Duffy and Snellgrove, Sydney, 2005), I write, as did Anson Cameron in his book, Silences Long Gone, (Pan Macmillan, 1998) of a bush (in 1894) where city and bush rely on each other and technology pushes into the bush uniting city and bush, thus enhancing the economy, the cross cultural interdependence and advancing the commonality between the two. I replace stereotypical characters with less predictable characters whose traits sit easily in either bush or city culture and skew the Traditionalist role of bush and city.

Humans have an innate tendency to attach themselves to objects on their cultural landscape. After a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina, people seem to hold on to objects left behind by the disaster. This paper examines several of the concepts and reasons as to why attachments may have formed to objects left on New Orleans' landscape after Hurricane Katrina. I explored human reactions after a natural disaster, and discussed how memories, collective and individual, often lead to personal attachment to objects. In an attempt to get a better understanding of this phenomenon, 250 surveys were distributed to residents in the New Orleans metro area. The surveys were used as a tool to discover if attachments were formed and if so, what led to the attachment. The results from the survey revealed that 38% of the people surveyed formed an attachment to an object left by Hurricane Katrina.

The literature indicates that for indigenous peoples the environmental impacts of climate change and some proposed solutions threaten lifeways, subsistence, economic ventures, future growth, cultural survivability, rights, land ownership, and access to resources. However, limited understanding and awareness of the vulnerability and capacity of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and of climate change impacts at the local level affect climate policymaking, planning, and equity. Case studies with the Coquille and Hoopa Valley Indian tribes in the Pacific Northwest U.S. explore the key considerations in planning for climate change adaptation, particularly for cultural and natural resource resilience. Document analysis and semi-structured interviews offer insight on the risks the tribes face and the role of traditional and local knowledge and experience in planning for climate change adaptation. Conclusions offer information useful in planning for climate impacts, local-level climate adaptation research, and climate policy development at the local to global levels.

Streszczenie:
Historically centred in the European and Asiatic countries, the ornamental stone production is currently one of the most important sectors for the Portuguese economy. In fact, Portugal is today one of the leaders in the production of natural stone worldwide, namely in the limestone and marble exploitation. The production increment over the last several years is related with the high quality of the carbonated stones existing in the Portuguese territory together with the Portuguese experience in stone manufacture, acquired since ancient times. In this context, colour is one of the most important visible aspects of natural stone, for the construction/restoration of new buildings and/or for Cultural Heritage preservation. Therefore, colour and discolouration of stone is currently an important research topic for the scientific community, where the association stone-colour-microorganism is still unexploited. This PhD aimed to determine the causes that affect the colour of Portuguese marbles and limestones. Therefore, several lithotypes of natural stone with high relevance for the Portuguese natural stone industry and for Cultural Heritage assets were selected and studied. In order to characterise discolouration phenomena, the processes of natural stones’ weathering were assessed, and the microbiota thriving on the stones was determined. The microorganisms’ contribution for the stone discolouration phenomena was evaluated through the execution of artificial ageing assays, under controlled environment. The results obtained allowed to identify the main chromophore components of the Portuguese carbonated stones studied. It was also finding and determined that the colour change occurred on the blue limestone is achieved through the natural weathering of pyrite, and this mechanism is accelerated when microorganisms are present. Regarding the cultural heritage assets study, it was finding that colour alterations of the stone are caused mainly by chemical and biogenic actions; Resumo: Tradicionalmente centrada nos países Europeus e Asiáticos, a produção de Pedra Ornamental tem-se tornado num dos mais importantes setores da economia Portuguesa.

This dissertation explored changes in structure, governance, perception and practice within Florida's child welfare system over a ten-year period (2001-2011) inclusive of two concurrent, statewide reform efforts: the privatization of child welfare services and implementation of a Title IV-E Waiver Demonstration. Using an anthropological perspective and holistic approach, the child welfare system is presented as a type of meta-organizational culture inclusive of subsystems and subcultures which are all embedded in historical and socioeconomic context that involves alternations between child safety and family preservation approaches to care. Guided by a grounded theory approach to qualitative data analysis, content analysis of child welfare organization documents, child welfare stakeholder interview transcripts, community governance partner surveys, and observational field notes was performed. Findings are presented within a systems theory framework and include emphasis on (1) systems change as a nonlinear, evolving process that takes time to sustain real change, 2) externalities and emergencies, as well as response to crises as ever present influential factors impacting system change and the creation of shared meaning and perceptions of, 3) the challenges involved in aligning structural views on poverty with practice models that more often employ the idea that poverty is individual, 4) the merit of privatization for social services if the reform is designed to create a public private partnership inclusive of caring for all children and families in a community, and 5) the value of flexibility and variance in local system design in order to best match a community's needs and resources.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the patterns and determinants of the marriage postponement and fertility decline experienced by Iranian women during the last two decades of the twentieth century. The thesis accounts for temporal changes in the socio-economic context of marriage and childbearing (e.g. improvement in education, urbanisation, economic fluctuations, etc.) and examines the marriage timing and fertility patterns of the cohorts of women who contributed to the recent marriage and fertility changes in order to provide more insight into the demographic behaviour of women with specific life course experiences. A topic of specific interest is the variation between the ethnic groups in Iran. The findings suggest that the recent marriage postponement was related to improvements in women's education and restrictions in the availability of suitable spouses (marriage market), with the former being the only factor contributing to the marriage delay of consecutive (1971-75 and 1976-80) birth cohorts. The recent decline in the probability of second and third conceptions was related to improvements in women's educational level, reductions in child mortality, and improvements in children's enrolment in education. The contribution of son preference to the probability of conception of a second child and the specific impact of urbanisation and industrialisation on the recent marriage and fertility changes were also notable. Different socio-economic factors were found responsible for the decline in the probability of a second conception across consecutive cohorts. of women (those who became exposed to the risk of childbearing in 1986-90 and 1991-95), whereas cohort differences in the probability of a third conception was not generally related to socio-economic forces, probably reflecting a common preference for stopping at two children. The findings also highlight the role of cultural factors associated with ethnicity in shaping differential patterns of marriage timing and suggest that ethnic differences in fertility are strongly related to ethnic differences in socio-economic attributes.

Streszczenie:
The main argument of this dissertation is that languages and cultures overlap in the psyche of individuals. Participants are 468 Italian migrants residing in English-speaking countries. Specifically, the purpose is to investigate how language choice for expressing emotions, self-reported language dominance and self-perceptions when using the local language relate to migrants’ acculturation attitudes and personality. The analysis has been conducted using a mixed-method. Data has been gathered through a web-questionnaire and 5 follow-up interviews have been conducted in order to explore possible causes of statistical patterns. The web-survey was a combination of the Bilingualism and Emotions Questionnaire, the Vancouver Index of Acculturation and the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire. Findings confirmed that respondents’ linguistic attitudes towards Italian (L1) and English (LX) matched their orientation towards L1 culture and LX culture. Specifically, participants who reported frequent use of the L1 to express emotions and considered it a dominant language were strongly attached to L1 culture practices. Similarly, participants who reported regular use of the LX to express emotions and considered it a dominant language were strongly attached to LX culture practices. Statistical analysis indicated reciprocal effects between linguistic and cultural factors, where L1 and LX dimensions remained unconnected. Furthermore, migrants’ feelings of difference when using the LX were constrained by their sense of belonging to the LX culture. Personality traits differently linked to L1 and LX variables, where no trait was correlated with both. In particular, the traits Flexibility and Emotional Stability were negatively related to participants’ attachment to the heritage language and culture, whereas the traits Cultural Empathy, Social Initiative and Openmindedness were positively related to their attachment to the host language and culture. Reciprocal effects appeared between culturallinguistic aspects and personality traits, illustrating the linguistic and cultural hybridity of migrants and their psychological changes following migration.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceived changes in cultural, human, and social capital as a result of professional development. Research in the area of effective professional development is substantial. Similarly, the body of research on cultural, human, and social networks is extensive. This research is significant in that it aims to marry the body of research surrounding professional development and the bodies of research in cultural, human, and social capital. A case study approach was used to conduct an in-depth look at teachers' practices through teacher interviews and classroom observations. All teachers in the study participated in a high school level college-access program aimed at increasing the college-going rate of under-served youth. Further, each participant had at least three years' experience in the program. The research suggests that there may be a teacher typology even within a voluntary college preparatory program. This typology is not limited to the suggested categories of this study. Nor does this typology suggest that teachers are stagnant categories of this study. Nor does this typology suggest that teachers are stagnant within their assigned typology. Rather, the research suggests that there is a continuum of teacher ability with regards to implementation of practices and ideas around cultural, human, and social capital. Outcomes suggest that school administrators should examine their practices in monitoring and supporting the implementation of professional development. Further, school administrators should consider matching school reform initiative with teacher type. Recommendations for future research include expanding the research both within the college-preparatory program and with teachers not involved in a college-preparatory program. Future research may also want to analyze how professional development influences the development of other forms of capital.

Streszczenie:
This thesis considers the portrayal of uncertain or amateur encounters with new technologies in the late twentieth century. Focusing on fictional responses to the incipient technological and cultural changes wrought by the rise of the personal computer, I demonstrate how authors during this period drew on experiences of empowerment and uncertainty to convey the impact of a period of intense technological transition. From the increasing availability of word processing software in the 1980s to the exponential popularity of the “World Wide Web”, I explore how perceptions of an “information revolution” tended to emphasise the increasing speed, ease and expansiveness of global communications, while more doubtful commentators expressed anxieties about the pace and effects of technological change. Critical approaches to the cultural impact of computing technologies have tended to overlook the role played by perceptions of expertise and familiarity, and my thesis seeks to redress this by identifying a broad range of imagery, language and cultural references used to depict amateur or inexpert encounters with computing technologies. My interest in literary representations of amateur or marginalised users of computing technology reveals how the ease and speed of reading and writing promised by technological expertise can be countered by uncertainty arising from limited understanding of the complex processes involved. In a pre-smartphone age, the computer loomed as an object which was simultaneously baffling and enchanting, filled with potential but also obscure in its fundamental workings. Examining instances within experimental literary fiction and poetry which portray, imply, or respond to, encounters with personal computing, I demonstrate how individuals’ attempts to understand a technologically-inflected world can be described and enacted by the use of unusual narrative and poetic devices, where experimental literary strategies work to recreate the complex sensations associated with thrilling, difficult, or incomprehensible aspects of information technologies.

Migration is one of life events that may change lifestyle, including new cultural norms, language and community systems as well as dietary patterns. Changing dietary patterns from traditional eating patterns to those typical of a western lifestyle has been associated with increased risk of disease. Furthermore, new food use patterns develop through the rejection of traditional and the acceptance of culturally new food habits. The purpose of this study is to identify the food habits and meal patterns of Koreans living in Australia, and any relationship between length of residence and change in eating habits. The method used for this research was a self reported questionnaire, administered in an interview and 3 day food records. One hundred adults living in the Korean community in Sydney were surveyed. The collected data were coded and analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 10. Descriptive analyses, for example mean and standard deviation, were carried out to determine the respondents’ attitudes toward food habits. The personal information data were also analysed by SPSS using frequency tables to describe the study sample. The results indicated that food habits had no significant differences dependent upon length of residence. Food habits were slightly affected by availability of income, occupation and religious beliefs. Food consumption frequency showed increased meat and dairy products. However, the consumption of rice and fish products decreased.

From the observations of food consumption practices, being these considered as part of familial heritage and as consumption produces for rural tourism, this thesis analyses socio-cultural changes in the interaction context of visitors and hosts. These changes are comprehended based on the concept of cultural hybridism, which occurs when inherited customs of host population also become consumption produce for tourists, that is, when there is an interaction between visitors and hosts, a situation of cultures in contact. Yet, rural area is understood here as plural, in a multi functional perspective. It is in this situation that the aim is to understand, from the observation of food consumption practices, the perceptions of rural and the changes in lifestyle of rural families in the context of tourist interaction. The empirical data were taken from ethnographic research, making use of participant observations and semi structured interviews. The main focus was on the family, who owns the Fazenda do Amor Inn and on two other neighbor families, which keep with the first, besides kinship; purchasing, selling and exchange of the food served in the inn. The data analysis enabled a discussion about changes in the lifestyle from the interrelation between the family of Fazenda do Amor Inn and tourists. Thus, the results are discussed based on three categories related to the food consumption practices there; touristic food, city food and their own food. Moreover, food is considered familial heritage and also as a consumption produce which can not only straighten ties among kinship and among tourists, but can also be used as a distinction, highlighting the position of subjects in touristic gathering.

The landscape that results from wine-producing activities is the expression of human work upon a territory, where man prints his cultural identity and retains his history throughout time. The aim of this research is to investigate the changes in a historically producing landscape, placed in a certified wine-producing territory, “Vale dos Vinhedos” (Vineyards Valley) – Bento Gonçalves, RS and its gradual transformation process. This case study analyses this process showing how the increasing urbanization, determined by the also increasing land value, brings about a remarkable loss of cultural values of this same territory. In the light of History, the whole route of landscape transformation is discussed. This route begins when the first vines are planted during the Italian immigrants’ arrival to the region, continues with the initial urban settlements and reaches the current urbanization process, which sets new land value standards to the analyzed territory. This current transformation has been threatening years of historic legacy developed during the formation of this unique landscape. Alerting to this problem is also one of the objectives hear focused.
