À medida que a escala e o âmbito das empresas multinacionais continuam a expandir-se, cada vez mais empresas chinesas entram no mercado português. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, as diferenças culturais entre países, regiões e nacionalidades criaram conflitos culturais, o que significa que um desafio central para as empresas e gestores empresariais. Uma vez que cultura e economia são interdependentes e inseparáveis, é necessário prestar mais atenção às diferenças culturais, e estratégias adequadas de gestão de conflitos culturais poderiam resolver as possíveis perdas causadas pelas diferenças culturais. Portanto, esta dissertação utiliza o caso de uma empresa chinesa de aquisição - Bison Bank em Portugal, utiliza a metodologia de investigação qualitativa para analisar o impacto da cultura nacional do país anfitrião na sua cultura organizacional e as implicações desta influência na gestão transcultural.
As the scale and scope of multinational corporations continue to expand, more and more Chinese companies enter the Portuguese market. But at the same time, cultural differences between countries, regions and nationalities have created cultural conflicts, which means that a central challenge for companies and business managers. Since culture and economy are interdependent and inseparable, it is necessary to pay more attention to cultural differences, and proper management strategies of cultural conflicts could solve the possible losses caused by cultural differences. Therefore, this dissertation uses the case of a Chinese acquisition company - Bison Bank in Portugal, uses the qualitative research methodology to analyze the impact of the host country's national culture on its organizational culture and the implications of this influence on cross-cultural management.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Multicultural conflicts pervade our world and have sparked considerable debate about their possible resolution. We argue that how culture is conceptualized is crucial to the continued dialogue about multicultural conflicts. Specifically, we argue that approaches that argue for the protection of cultures run into significant problems if they do not employ a conception of cultures as delineated entities. However, we also hold that the notion that cultures cannot be distinct in any way, does very little to contribute to dialogue. From the very beginning, it excludes the notion of a culture that is to be protected and thus stops the dialogue there and then. To be true to the principle of audi ad alteram partem, approaches to multicultural conflicts must conceive of an alternative model, provided that such a model is logically possible. This may provide the dialogue with a much needed point of common understanding from which to proceed. Accordingly, we develop a model of culture whereby it is possible to delineate cultures. In this model, a culture can be delineable in a manner analogous to how we delineate persons. Our model of personal delineation suggests a dual structure whereby a trivial personal boundary contains a unity of conflict within the person. In persons, this unity of conflict lies in the relationship between the “I” and repressed meanings. This relationship must be characterised by self-referential decisions and the capacity to make self-referential decisions is central to our definition of personal autonomy. In cultures, we argue that multicultural conflicts provide the necessary conditions that enable us to conceptualize trivial boundaries in cultures in terms of the communicative relationships between members of a particular culture. Multicultural conflicts prompt self-categorizations by individuals and such self-categorizations are made in terms of group membership. Though all members may not agree as to who belongs to the culture and who does not, the claims made about membership serve to differentiate the communicative relationships inside the culture from those outside it. Furthermore, we show that, inside this trivial boundary, a unity of conflict analogous to the one found in personal autonomy, can be exhibited by cultures. We show how a culture, through its institutions, particularly through an institutionalised exit possibility, 1) may exhibit self-reference and 2) relate to a source of authority in the same way as a person does when making selfreferential decisions. In this regard, we argue that institutionalised exit possibilities embody adherence to the consensus vs. power criterion, according to which the dominant account of a culture is achieved through consensus, as opposed to through the exertion of power. Furthermore, we argue that with a strong analogy between cultures’ and personal delineation, it becomes reasonable to extend concepts we usually apply to persons, such as fairness, attachment and viability, so that they can also apply to cultures. We show that the application of these concepts clarifies certain current multicultural issues. The application of theses concepts also leads to the development of a decision making process to deal with multicultural issues.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Multikulturele konflikte kom wêreldwyd voor en het reeds aansienlike debat oor die resolusie van sodanige konflik ontlok. Ons voer aan dat hoe kultuur gekonseptualiseer word, besonder belangrik is vir die voorgesette dialoog oor multikulturele konflikte. Meer spesifiek voer ons aan dat benaderings wat vir die beskerming van kulture argumenteer, beduidende probleme ondervind indien dit nie `n konsepsie van kulture as delinieerbare entiteite gebruik nie. Die gedagte dat kulture nie op enige manier afgebaken kan word nie, dra egter ook weinig by tot dialoog. Dit sluit van meet af die gedagte dat kulture beskerm moet word, uit en staak dus die dialoog daar en dan. Ten einde getrou te wees aan die beginsel van audi ad alteram partem, moet benaderings tot multikulturele konflik `n alternatiewe model van kultuur bedink, mits so `n model logies moontlik is. Die toepassing van hierdie begrippe verbeter ons begrip van sekere huidige multikulturele kwessies en lei ook tot die ontwikkeling van `n besluitnemingsproses vir multikulturele kwessies.

In the past two decades, a variety of policy frameworks have been designed worldwide for the protection and stewardship of cultural landscapes. While the National Park Service (NPS) in United States has developed a system of preparing Cultural Landscape Inventories and Reports (CLI & CLR) to address sites under their administration, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has its own criteria for designating cultural landscapes within an international forum. This document attempts to outline and critically analyze these two approaches with the aim of exploring their applicability to the Indian milieu. The ultimate aim of the research is to attempt the formulation of a methodological framework for the implementation of cultural landscape preservation in India. This is achieved by first exploring endemic Indian notions about time, space, nature and culture, followed by the proposal of a few key concepts or broad recommendations that should, in my opinion, guide any cultural landscape preservation efforts in the Indian context. This is supported by a discussion of a few best practices at sites both in India and worldwide where appropriate solutions were sought. Lessons from these as well as the analysis of the NPS and UNESCO models together give rise to a methodological framework form initiating cultural landscape preservation in India.

The work deals with the current burning issue of cultural differences. These issues relate to the expression of culture and one's home country within the mediums of the Internet and online communication. Based on the research of previous studies, this work aims to demonstrate the influence of cultural dimensions in web design and content. In a sample of the largest beer producers in the Czech Republic, Japan and Great Britain supplemented with the largest international brewing companies are analyzed components which characterize cultural differences. The main scope of this study is based on assumptions and theories according to G. Hofstede and E. T. Hall. It thus demonstrates the influence of culture and dimensions -- Collectivism/Individualism, Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, High/Low Context, Masculinity/Femininity, Time Orientation and Colour symbolism. It is recommended that companies pay more attention to the cultural adaption of web communication, which can bring more clarity and attractiveness, and also a higher added value to the customer himself.

The loss in translation between languages has long been debated, and a current issue within Translation Studies is that of the cultural aspect. Using two opposing concepts by Lawrence Venuti; domestication that is used to assimilate the source culture into the target culture, and foreignization that is used to preserve and highlight the foreign culture in the target text, this paper examines how culture is transferred in literary translation between English and Swedish. In order to establish which strategies are used, data consisting of 30 passages from the American novel Dead Until Dark (2001), and the corresponding passages in two different Swedish translations of it, is analysed linguistically. While the first translation is found to show no marked preference for either strategy, the second translation uses domestication thrice as often as foreignization. However, both translations use domestication in 9 out of 10 examples in the category ‘Figurative use of language’, which suggests a marked difficulty in preserving the source culture while translating metaphorical language. The analysis also shows a difference in the way the strategies are employed, suggesting a further division of the strategies into ‘passive’ and ‘active’. The author calls for further research on the effect of such a division.

Nations sharing similar historical, linguistic, and social backgrounds tend to cluster around the same cultural values systems. However, changing socioenvironmental conditions drive cultural values systems to change over time. This study compared changing cultural values in Poland in the postcommunist era with values in the Czech Republic and Slovenia, using factorial ANOVA of published data from the European Values Survey and World Values Survey. The hypotheses were: (a) cultural values in Poland have moved from traditionalist values toward secularism; (b) Poland's rate of cultural values movement was more moderate than either the Czech Republic or Slovenia; and (c) the higher degree of religiousness in Poland mirrored the slower rate of movement toward secularism. The study participants were 20,038 adults from the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovenia. Findings showed 10 of 19 cultural values in Poland showed moderate movement toward secularism, confirming that traditional cultural values in Poland had decreased. However, the findings also showed cultural migration in Poland preserved strong traditional family and religious values despite the influence of far reaching social, economic, and political changes. This study revealed two important points: (a) as cultural values within groups of nations change, cultural values in similar clusters of nations tend to move in the same direction, and (b) deeply held traditional values tend to preserve the differentiation between nations, even as process of cultural values change continues.

This study examines the cross-cultural impact on parenting orientations of Indian families raising their children in Finland. In order to study the impact of Finnish culture on Indian parenting, parenting orientations of Finnish and Indian families living in Finland were studied. The parenting practices and associated cultural values and beliefs were studied intergenerationally and cross-culturally. Hall’s (1989) Cultural Iceberg Model is used to look at the visible and invisible aspects of a culture and its relation with parenting practices. Parenting philosophies with respect to the support and encouragement in learning process, parental control, academic aspirations, gender perspective and cultural beliefs were the specified areas that were explored. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on 4 Finnish and 5 Indian parents, who have at least one child of age 7 and onward. Phenomenology was used as a qualitative research method. The research findings show that Indian parents, who were raised in a traditional-patriarch social hierarchy in India, are raising their children in Finland by providing them partial autonomy, encouragement and support, taking active interest in their lives, promoting them to be independent and preparing them for the future. Indian parents have accepted the cultural differences of Finnish culture in their lives but the root values of Indian-ness are not comprised upon. This can be observed when their parenting practices include moral values, extra protectiveness and restricting their children on the interrelationships with the opposite sex. The acceptance of cultural differences by Indian parents are reflected in their changed methods of discipline, less hierarchical and open communication, introducing a range of hobbies to their children and making an active effort to connect to their children. No gender biases have been noticed in the parenting practices of Indian and Finnish parents. The amount of academic pressure by parents is less as compared to India but the expectations from children to succeed and opt for a noble profession is eminent. The term ‘third culture kids’ have been used for the children of the Indian parents, who are being raised in Finnish society. The study showed cross-cultural effect on these third culture kids, who have different worldviews, than their parents and identify themselves as a global citizen rather than embracing either Indian or Finnish identity. Parenting orientations of Finnish families depicted two-way communication, supporting children to pursue individual interests and enough liberty on children’s pathways. Their parenting and social values of individual identity has a strong impact on Indian children as well who are raised here. The strong foundation of Finnish society is based on some of the moral values like ‘Sisu’ meaning Perseverance and Dedication, Trust, Honesty and Punctuality. The author trusts that this study and the research findings would be beneficial for further research in the related areas.

Native Indian Cultural Centres have grown out of the on-going struggle for native self-determination and are rapidly becoming a focus for native cultural revitalization. This thesis investigates the evolution of two Northwest Coast native Indian cultural centres--the 'Ksan Village and the Makah Cultural and Research Centre (MCRC)—through each stage of development, outlining the historical, cultural, economic and social context, the form and function of conceptual development and the planned and unplanned processes involved in building and operating each centre. Analysis has indicated that 'Ksan and the MCRC have evolved as a response to local cultural and economic pressures and opportunities and have been funded primarily on the basis of economic rather than cultural viability. Six factors were found to be collectively sufficient to promote the successful development of each cultural centre: local cultural knowledge, social mobilization, local project relevance, native Indian control, access to resources and common motivational ground. The relationship between native Indians and non-native specialists is changing. Native people are no longer allowing non-native specialists to define their culture and interpret their heritage and 'Ksan and the MCRC have positively re-inforced that change. The development of native Indian cultural centres has provided an important step in the on-going native struggle for self-determination by providing a focus and/or forum for native cultural identity and is likely to continue in the future.

Music signal analysis is a research field concerning the extraction of meaningful information from musical audio signals. This thesis analyses the music signals from the note-level to the song-level in a bottom-up manner and situates the research in two Music information retrieval (MIR) problems: audio onset detection (AOD) and music structural segmentation (MSS). Most MIR tools are developed for and evaluated on Western music with specific musical knowledge encoded. This thesis approaches the investigated tasks from a cross-cultural perspective by developing audio features and algorithms applicable for both Western and non-Western genres. Two Chinese Jingju databases are collected to facilitate respectively the AOD and MSS tasks investigated. New features and algorithms for AOD are presented relying on fusion techniques. We show that fusion can significantly improve the performance of the constituent baseline AOD algorithms. A large-scale parameter analysis is carried out to identify the relations between system configurations and the musical properties of different music types. Novel audio features are developed to summarise music timbre, harmony and rhythm for its structural description. The new features serve as effective alternatives to commonly used ones, showing comparable performance on existing datasets, and surpass them on the Jingju dataset. A new segmentation algorithm is presented which effectively captures the structural characteristics of Jingju. By evaluating the presented audio features and different segmentation algorithms incorporating different structural principles for the investigated music types, this thesis also identifies the underlying relations between audio features, segmentation methods and music genres in the scenario of music structural analysis.

This thesis focuses on the articulation in music of human worldviews, and the social contexts in which they emerge. It suggests that people project various forms of social reality through symbolic systems which operate dynamically to maintain and recreate cultural patterns. The symbolic system investigated in support of this suggestion is that constituted by Venda guitar songs. In the performance of these songs, social reality emerges in a combination of symbolic forms: verbal, musical and somatic. The combination of these symbolic forms serves as a medium for individual self-awareness basic to the establishment of social reality and identity, and the drive for social power and legitimacy. A study of these symbolic forms and their performance indicates that musicians invoke the potential of communal music to increase social support for certain principles on which survival strategies in a turbulently changing society might be based. The discourse of Venda guitar songs incorporates modes of popular expression and consciousness, and thus attempts to invoke states of intensified emotion to promote these survival strategies. Performance occasions emerge as a focus for community orientation and the exploration of social networks. They promote stabilizing social and economic interaction, and serve as a basis for moral and cooperative action. Social reality also emerges in musical style, which is treated as the audible articulation of human thought and emotion. Stylistic choices are treated as integral to the conceptualization of contemporary existence. A study of these choices reveals varying degrees of cultural resistance and assimilation, ranging from musical styles which are essentially rooted in traditional social patterns, to styles which integrate traditional and adopted musical elements as articulations of changing self-perceptions, social aspirations, and quests for new social identity.

The focus of the research is a cultural analysis of continuity and change at a heavy engineering plant of a multinational manufacturing corporation from the mid 1960's to the early 1990's. Substantively, the dissertation offers some views on the diffusion and institutionalisation of models of organisation, of managing, and of progress by exploring the genesis and impact of a particular model of organisation-making and cultural change (that of total quality) in the case-study plant. The fate of this managerial reform is explained with the help of historical and ethnographic data and by constructing an institutional model of the plant's symbolic environment. It is argued that a more complex mapping of culture and cultural change is required than is currently portrayed in the literature so that the relationship between cultural and organisational boundaries becomes part of the research problem rather than an (often implicit) input to the research design. Concerns about how to model and represent the plant and about which data and voices are to be considered valid constitute the main methodological debates. The dissertation aims to offer some methodological contribution to cultural analysis by providing accounts of three cycles of research activity. It is proposed that movement between these perspectives and their multi-method research practices is a way of juxtaposing micro and macro interpretations of organisation life and acknowledging issues of structure and agency.

L’objectif de cette recherche est d’évaluer les propriétés psychométriques du Test d’Intelligence Emotionnelle de Mayer-Salovey-Caruso (MSCEIT), du Questionnaire des Traits d’Intelligence Emotionnelle (TEIQue), et du Test d’auto-évaluation d’Intelligence Emotionnelle (SREIT) dans un contexte comparatif interculturel comprenant des étudiants collectivistes Pakistanais (culture Orientale) et des étudiants individualistes Français (culture Occidentale). Les résultats de cette étude ont démontré que les participants de la culture française ont eu une meilleure performance par rapport aux participants pakistanais au MSCEIT mais pas au TEIQue et au SREIT. Les analyses d’échantillons multiples ont révélé des structures factorielles invariantes du MSCEIT, du TEIQue, et du SREIT à travers les deux cultures. Concernant la validité discriminante, l’auto-évaluation de l’IE, mesurée par le SREIT et le TEIQue, et les mesures de performance de l’IE, évaluées par le MSCEIT, n’ont pas démontré une forte corrélation dans les deux cultures. En autre, les résultats au MSCEIT, au TEIQue, et au SREIT n’ont pas démontré le lien avec l’intelligence cognitive dans les deux cultures. Des corrélations faibles à modérées ont été observées entre les mesures de l’IE et les dimensions de personnalité Big Five. Enfin, les mesures de l’IE se sont révélées indépendantes de styles de communication. Concernant la validité convergente des mesures d’auto-évaluation de l’IE, les résultats au TEIQue ont montré une forte corrélation avec le SREIT dans les deux cultures. En ce qui concerne la validité incrémentale, après un contrôle statistique des dimensions de personnalité Big Five et la capacité cognitive, le MSCEIT et le SREIT n’ont pas démontré le lien avec la satisfaction de vie, l’affect positif, l’affect négatif, et la détresse psychologique dans les deux cultures. En revanche, les facteurs du TEIQue ont expliqué une part significative de la variance dans les variables dépendantes après avoir contrôlé pour les dimensions de personnalité Big Five et l’intelligence cognitive. Cependant, des analyses plus approfondies ont révélé que ces associations ont été en grande partie attribuées au facteur du bien-être du TEIQue. Enfin, les femmes ont montré de meilleurs résultats que les hommes au MSCEIT mais pas au TEIQue et au SREIT dans les deux cultures. En résumé, les résultats de cette étude fournissent les preuves pour validité factorielle, discriminante, et convergente de ces mesures de l’intelligence émotionnelles dans les deux cultures. Toutefois, les résultats concernant la validité incrémentale de ces mesures se sont avérés moins prometteurs que prévu
Despite the rather large literature concerning emotional intelligence, the vast majority of studies concerning development and validation of emotional intelligence scales have been done in the Western countries. Hence, a major limitation in this literature is its decidedly Western focus. The aim of this research was to assess the psychometric properties of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT), the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue), and the Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SREIT) in a cross-cultural comparative context involving the collectivist Pakistani (Eastern culture) and the individualist French (Western culture) students. Results of this study showed that participants from the French culture scored higher than participants from the Pakistani sample on the MSCEIT but not on the TEIQue and the SREIT. Multi-sample analyses revealed that the MSCEIT, the TEIQue, and the SREIT factor structures remained invariant across both cultures. Regarding discriminant validity, in both cultures, self-ratings of emotional intelligence, as assessed by the SREIT and the TEIQue, and performance measure of emotional intelligence, as assessed by the MSCEIT, were not strongly correlated. Furthermore, in both cultures, scores on the MSCEIT, the TEIQue, and the SREIT revealed to be unrelated to cognitive intelligence and communication styles. Finally, low to moderate correlations were observed between the EI measures and the Big Five personality dimensions. Regarding convergent validity of the self-report EI measures, in both cultures the scores on the TEIQue strongly correlated with the scores on the SREIT. With regard to incremental validity, in both cultures, after statistically controlling for the Big Five personality dimensions and cognitive ability, the MSCEIT and the SREIT revealed to be unrelated to satisfaction with life, positive affect, negative affect, and psychological distress. In contrast, the TEIQue factors accounted for a significant amount of variance in outcome variables after controlling for the Big Five personality dimensions and the cognitive intelligence. However, further analyses revealed that the associations were mainly because of the TEIQue’s well-being factor. Finally, in both cultures, females scored higher than males on the MSCEIT but not on the TEIQue and the SREIT. In sum, the results of this study provide evidence for the factorial, discriminant, and convergent validity of these emotional intelligence measures in both cultures. However, results regarding incremental validity of these measures are less promising than anticipated

By examining activist and advocacy efforts aimed at youth, this research brings to light how LGBT organizations use campaigns to articulate identity and, conversely, how LGBT youth articulate notions of identity. Through the lens of the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit activist organization, this dissertation uses in-depth interviews with organizational members and chat-based interviews with LGBT youth to study the meanings participants brought to the campaign.

Strategic communication has been instrumental in construction of LGBT as a cohesive collective identity and has played a vital role in the early stages of the gay rights movement. This research demonstrates how contemporary LGBT advocacy, through strategic communication, works to shape understandings of LGBT youth.

Instead of focusing on the Internet as a democratic space that equalizes power differentials between an organization and its publics, this study shows that the construction of identity is the result of a dynamic process between producers and consumers in which power is localized and does not simply belong to an organization or its public.

This research challenges the Internet as a democratic space and demonstrates that identity is a discursive struggle over meaning that is bound up in the intimate dance between producers and consumers of a campaign. In contrast to functionalist understandings of public relations that privileges the organization, this dissertation contends that a cultural-economic approach focuses on the processes of communication. A cultural-economic approach gives voice to the diverse audiences of a communication campaign and addresses the role communication plays as a discursive force that influences the construction of identities.

The central contention of this thesis, and its original contribution to the subject area, is that the recent development of civilian intelligence analysis in Scottish policing presents a challenge to an otherwise hegemonic ‘cop culture’ in police intelligence work. In advancing this argument this thesis develops the existing literature by recognising that academic research to date on ‘police culture’ has focused almost exclusively on the cultures of sworn police officers, and particularly those ‘cops’ engaged in ‘frontline’ policing. Civilian police staff groups have been excluded from existing cultural accounts, despite their long-established position in many police forces, particularly those in Scotland. Drawing upon five years of qualitative sociological fieldwork, and taking inspiration from the theory and research of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this thesis highlights how civilian intelligence analysts – as office-based, young, predominantly female and embodying a new ‘academic’ knowledge that is divorced from experience – have become increasingly essential to the effective functioning of intelligence-led policing. The integration of civilian intelligence analysis into police intelligence work in Scotland, however, is inhibited by the persistent hegemony of a cop culture that privileges masculinity, physicality, solidarity, cynicism and, above all, the experiential knowledge that the ‘crime-fighting’ cop has gained from policing ‘the streets’. The cultural challenge of civilian intelligence analysis, emerging from within wider processes of civilianisation and pluralisation, has provoked a patriarchal response from police officers. This response is characterised by masculine domination and the exertion of symbolic violence within the wider ideological construction of the ‘police family’. This patriarchal response has also contributed to the infantilisation of the intelligence analyst in Scottish policing, as a concomitant form of cultural control. The interplay of these processes of cultural challenge and control contributes to a phenomenon of cultural dissonance – a sense of difference, discord and disharmony – between police officers and intelligence analysts. This cultural dissonance is sustained in everyday practice through the perpetuation and persistence of a ‘them and us’ culture between these groups. This thesis concludes by exploring the future of intelligence analysis in the context of profound and on-going organisational reform, and in doing so identifies recent processes of de-civilianisation in Scottish policing. Although intelligence analysis has remained relatively insulated from de-civilianisation to date, fieldwork disclosed how there has emerged disquiet about the potential diversification of the intelligence analyst role and concern for the future position of the intelligence analyst in Scottish policing as it enters a new phase in its distinctive development.

Can machine learning algorithms be trained to recognise beauty in music? To what extent is human recognition of beauty in music cultural, or crosscultural? Music is prevalent in all human cultures. Music information retrieval is a growing eld in which computational techniques have been applied to many musical problems such as genre recognition and measuring musical similarity. Computational ethnomusicology is rarer because the acquisition of non-Western music is di cult. Beauty in music has been little investigated with scienti c methods, though there are some examples on which this thesis builds. The e ect of timbral and 12-step chroma audio features, and a wide variety of di erent machine learning algorithms techniques were tested, with the combination of all the MARSYAS features and Support Vector Machines performing well. Predicting beauty was rst investigated with a small Last.fm set and later with a larger world music survey with Singaporean participants. Beauty was predicted based on a small selection of Last.fm tags with good accuracy. Beauty ratings from the survey, conducted in Singapore, were predictable by machine learning using similar methods. Predicting the geographical origin of world music from audio features was attempted. Some promising results emerged, and novel methods for predicting points on the surface of the Earth were developed. An investigation into the link between beauty ratings and location was conducted. The Singaporean beauty ratings were predicted from audio content, geographic content and a combination of both, showing strong correlations between longitude, distance, and timbral features with the beauty ratings, which were statistically very closely linked with distance from Singapore. From this beauty in music is concluded to be culturally related and timbre is shown to be a good pointer to cultural differences.

Education does not take place in a vacuum, it is a terrain where conflicting ideologies compete and relations of power are inscribed. Despite, however, the accumulation of studies illustrating the social and political nature of schooling, sociological work concerned with educational computing is in short supply; with few exceptions, sociologists of education have not directly addressed educational computing. The development of IT in education in the last two decades has been largely uncritical and the field has been dominated by technocentric approaches. This thesis is an effort to develop a sociological language for understanding educational computing and suggests that the introduction and use of IT in education should be situated within its social, political and cultural context. Appropriating ideas from the sociology of education, sociology of technology and cultural studies, the thesis uses a cultural circuit analysis of Logo progran1I11ing language as a case-study in the sociology of culture in order to illustrate some of the ways in which the introduction of new technologies in education may interplay with the maintenance and/or transformation of existing power relations. The first part of the thesis raises questions that strive to situate technological products -and particularly computers in education- within a sociological paradigm. It establishes four main arguments that run through the whole study: • that most existing accounts of IT in education are inadequate; • that sociology of education and cultural studies can -and should- add to our social perspectives on the use of IT in education; • that technological artefacts used in education are socially constructed and can be analysed in terms of a "circuit of cultural production"; • that we could demonstrate the utility of such a model by running it through the development and implementation of a major IT phenomenon, that is Logo. In the second part of the thesis, analysis is divided in five parts (five analytically distinct "moments"). Through reconstructed accounts of participants and secondary sources, analysis of "moment" 1 (production) demonstrates the contingent and unstable nature of Logo as constantly changing and developing technology in the context of the decision-making processes. Analysis of "moment" 2 (text) discusses Logo as a "text", its "philosophy" for education, and the embodiment of its epistemological principles in the technical design of the language. Analysis of "moment" 3 (marketing/economics) discusses the role of marketing, politics, and economics in the development and evolution of Logo; it illustrates that the activities of mediators like government departments and the microcomputer industrial lobby were crucial to the modification and redevelopment of Logo beyond the context of its initial development. Analysis of "moment" 4 (context) situates the introduction of Logo to mainstream schools within its social and political context suggesting that the disintegration of "progressive" education largely constituted the context for the "decline" of Logo during the process of restructuring of formal education in the late 1970s and 1980s. Against this background, analysis of "moment" 5 (consumption) discusses the ways in which Logo was received in the educational arena and was implicated in the politics of educational innovation, looking into the place that Logo occupied within the institutional and organisational cultures of mainstream schools. Finally, based on the discussion of Logo as a case-study and the findings thereof, the thesis summarises the main analytic and methodological messages and points to directions for further research.

Project Risk Management (PRM) has become an important tool supporting project success. Many project organizations have now gained benefits from employing the concept. The problem with RPM practice lies in the effectiveness of the implementation process. This brings to the study of a soft aspect of project risk management. The most effective way to implement the PRM concept in an organization is to tune the PRM process in accordance with organizational culture and practice. This would bring some level of difficulty where a PRM process was to be applied in a place where values, norms and practice are different to the place where it originated. In this study, the researcher examines the influence of culture and compares it with PRM practice. The study seeks to investigate the social dynamics in Tbailand, a country whose risk management lags behind that of Western economies and whose cultural characteristics differ significant from Western nations. First the researcher reviews the literature on PRM process in order to understand its principle and processes. The study of PRM implementation and its behavioral aspect of also conducted. The study led to the extraction of PRM values. These values help to enhance understanding of PRM practice and managerial practice required to support effectiveness in the PRM process. In order to gain an understanding of cultural difference, Hofstede's framework is employed to serve as a tool to analyse Thai culture. The social impact is then analysed by the discussion of the effect of Hofstede' dimensions of PRM values. The study is based on a qualitative paradigm trying to understand the effect of Thai culture on management practice. It results in three research methods substantiate each other. The case study is to provide understanding of the effects of Thai culture in a real life context. The interviews give the perspective of Thai project managers towards risk and risk management principle. The workshop is to investigate Thai managers' response to the risk management process. The researcher presents a cultural analysis of Thailand and discusses the effect of cultural factors on the PRM values within Thai management practice. The researcher concludes with a discussion of the effect of Thai culture on PRM practice. The findings of this research support that in order for PRM to be adopted in places where culture is different to Western norms, it is important to investigate and gain an understanding of a particular culture prior to commencing PRM adoption programmes.

The overall aim of this study is to analyse the cultural representation in fictional texts in three English as a Foreign Language (EFL) coursebooks written for the English 5 course in Swedish upper secondary school. The three coursebooks are Blueprint A 3.0, Pick & Mix 1, and Solid Gold 1. The study was conducted in order to compare and discuss the portrayal and representation of cultures of the English-speaking world. The method used consists of a combination of the two-stage model constructed by McDonough et al. (2013) and a qualitative content analysis. The three coursebooks were analysed through the theoretical framework of postcolonial theory. The results show that American culture is represented to a higher extent than any other culture in the included fictional works. Because of the discrepancy in representation, American culture was portrayed through various societal issues, living conditions, and cultural features. However, many other cultures of the English-speaking world were barely represented at all. Furthermore, the results show that cultures such as Indian or Irish are not included in all the coursebooks. The lack of fictional texts representing cultures of Africa included in the coursebooks further shows the discrepancy and specific focus on certain parts of the English-speaking world. Solid Gold 1 was the only one of the three coursebooks which included fictional texts discussing all cultures highlighted. Although there is a notable difference in the representation of cultures, and the number of times certain cultures are mentioned, the analysis shows that the coursebooks create many opportunities, through fictional texts, for students to learn about societal issues, cultural features, and living conditions in parts of the world where English is used, meeting the requirements of the Swedish curriculum.

The English language has become an international language and is globally used as a lingua franca. Therefore, there has been a shift in English-language education toward teaching English as an interna-tional language (EIL). Teaching from the EIL paradigm means that English is seen as an international language used in communication by people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. As the approach to English-language education changes from the traditional native-speaker, target country context, so does the role of culture within English-language teaching. The aim of this thesis is to in-vestigate and analyse cultural representations in two Swedish EFL textbooks used in upper-secondary school to see how they correspond with the EIL paradigm. This is done by focusing on the geograph-ical origin of the cultural content as well as looking at what kinds of culture are represented in the textbooks. A content analysis of the textbooks is conducted, using Kachru’s Concentric Circles of English as the model for the analysis of the geographical origin. Horibe’s model of the three different kinds of culture in EIL is the model used for coding the second part of the analysis. The results of the analysis show that culture of target countries and "Culture as social custom" dominate the cultural content of the textbook. Thus, although there are some indications that the EIL paradigm has influ-enced the textbooks, the traditional approach to culture in language teaching still prevails in the ana-lysed textbooks. Because of the relatively small sample included in the thesis, further studies need to be conducted in order to make conclusions regarding the Swedish context as a whole.

This research examines the entrenchment of Islamic cultures in Malaysia’s political system and society. The study contends that the state is involved directly in the composition of cultures through its power structure. The study begins with an initial question of 'how Islamic ideology has been embedded in the socio-political context'. As Islam is not the only practising religion; another question to be explored is 'what interpretation do people give to the construction and practices of Islam'. With the aim to extend the current research treatment of Malaysia’s Islamic revivalism and Islamisation project, this study focuses on the cultural implications and experiences of Islam. Since most research deals with the broader role of Islam in Malaysian politics, the cultural implications and experiences of the religion in society has not been specifically or substantively addressed and has led to the peripheral notion of Islam. This study uses an individual interview approach and focus group discussions on exploring the experiences of the research participants with regard to the phenomenon under investigation. Participants from three categories – government authority, media practitioner, and ordinary people – were approached with the general assumption that they could provide from general to specific information related to the key research questions. An abbreviated version of grounded theory using a constructivist-interpretivist paradigm is adopted to explore the lived experiences of individuals who witness, experience, and involve in the ways in which Islam has been constructed, preserved, contested, or resisted in the society. Based on the framework built from the grounded theory analysis, the research shows Islam as one of the ideological hegemony that strengthens the state's power in governing Malaysian society. In so doing, the state assembles many important institutions and mobilises them as its cultural producers to shape the understanding and practice of Islam at the political level. The study also reveals, when religious consciousness has increased, the Islamisation projects are no longer a mere political rivalry and state’s manipulation of power but more towards fulfilling the community's need for stronger Islam. From Gramscian notion, the state promotes values that are in congruence with the people’s interest to retain its hegemony. This has moulded the culture and lifestyle of the Muslim in Malaysia through the visibility of Islamic practices as compared to other religions. However, it is learned from the data, some Islamic rules and practices have put ethnic relations into complex situations. The identification of Malay and Islam has led to the portrayal of other ethnic groups as the ‘other’. Too much emphasis on Islam (us) has side-lined other religious practices (other). In conclusion, these results negate the view that Islam holds a subservient position as claimed by a few studies. Finally, the research suggests other areas that could be explored using the same framework.

This thesis sets out to explore, describe, quantify, and visualise uncertainty in a cultural informatics context, with a focus on archaeological reconstructions. For quite some time, archaeologists and heritage experts have been criticising the often toorealistic appearance of three-dimensional reconstructions. They have been highlighting one of the unique features of archaeology: the information we have on our heritage will always be incomplete. This incompleteness should be reflected in digitised reconstructions of the past. This criticism is the driving force behind this thesis. The research examines archaeological theory and inferential process and provides insight into computer visualisation. It describes how these two areas, of archaeology and computer graphics, have formed a useful, but often tumultuous, relationship through the years. By examining the uncertainty background of disciplines such as GIS, medicine, and law, the thesis postulates that archaeological visualisation, in order to mature, must move towards archaeological knowledge visualisation. Three sequential areas are proposed through this thesis for the initial exploration of archaeological uncertainty: identification, quantification and modelling. The main contributions of the thesis lie in those three areas. Firstly, through the innovative design, distribution, and analysis of a questionnaire, the thesis identifies the importance of uncertainty in archaeological interpretation and discovers potential preferences among different evidence types. Secondly, the thesis uniquely analyses and evaluates, in relation to archaeological uncertainty, three different belief quantification models. The varying ways that these mathematical models work, are also evaluated through simulated experiments. Comparison of results indicates significant convergence between the models. Thirdly, a novel approach to archaeological uncertainty and evidence conflict visualisation is presented, influenced by information visualisation schemes. Lastly, suggestions for future semantic extensions to this research are presented through the design and development of new plugins to a search engine.

This analysis deals with the difficulties in translating a medical text from English into Swedish. As primary source, I have used a British textbook about geriatrics called Nursing Older People which is aimed at university students of nursing. The selected chapter is called Person-centred dementia care written by the authors Sue Davies, Barry Aveyard and Ian J. Norman. The translation difficulties have involved terminology and cultural aspects. This analysis shows how these problems were tackled by studying different translation theories, such as Munday (2001) who refers to Koller’s theory about equivalence and Vinay & Darbelnet’s model of direct translation and oblique translation as well as Ingo (2007) who accounts for text sort conventions.

The terminological problems involved choosing the most appropriate term for describing diagnosis, diseases, body organs and symptoms. There was a wide variety of terms from old Graeco-Latin terms to English terms coined in the 1990s. Other terms were related to the international field of epidemiology as well as the organisation of care for the elderly, based on the Swedish Social Services Act. A suitable choice was possible by considering aspects like frequent usage of field specific words and collocations in parallel texts.

The cultural aspects involved cultural references such as differences between Sweden and the UK as for national institutions and organisations. The solution was to find a cultural equivalent or, when this was not possible, explain the term in a footnote.

Teachers often tell anecdotes about children or classroom events. Such accounts are regarded as oral narratives of personal experience which are a natural part of teacher-to-teacher talk in occupational culture. In this thesis, models of narrative analysis are reviewed from the disciplines of sociology and sociolinguistics, psychology, literature and anthropology. In the empirical work, nearly one thousand narratives told by primary teachers were elicited in interviews or recorded in teachers' meetings. These are analysed in terms of their content and tellers' perspectives, both of which are considered elements of teachers' culture. Through narrative analysis a picture of primary teaching is built up, as portrayed by teachers. Particular narrative themes focussed upon include children who stand out, breakthroughs in learning, teachers' planning and teachers' experiences of disaster, humour and 'awkward' parents. Based on the analysis of these themes a number of models of teachers' cultural perspectives are suggested. The study proposes that narrative analysis can be used to study the cultural perspectives of occupational groups, in this case of teachers.

The Cultural Geography (CG) Model is a multi-agent discrete event simulation developed by TRAC-Monterey. It provides a framework to study the effects of operations in Irregular Warfare, by modeling behavior and interactions of populations. The model is based on social science theories; in particular, agent decision-making algorithms are built on Exploration Learning (EL) and Recognition-Primed Decision (RPD), and trust between entities is modeled to increase realism of interactions. This study analyzed the effects of these components on behavior and scenario outcome. It aimed to identify potential approaches for simplification of the model, and improve traceability and understanding of entity actions. The effect of using EL/RPD with/without trust was tested in basic stand-alone scenarios to assess its impact in isolation on entities perception of civil security. Further testing also investigated the influence on entity behavior in the context of obtaining resources from infrastructure nodes. The findings indicated that choice of decision-making methods did not significantly change scenario outcome, but variance across replications was greater when both EL and RPD were used. Trust was found to delay the rate of change in population stance due to interactions, but did not affect overall outcome if given sufficient time to reach steady state.

The sample includes a widely diverse employee population of males and females of various ethnicities. The sample also includes employees who work in various positions ranging from clerical positions to management level positions. Potentially, each of these employees will be confronted with ethical dilemmas at sometime in their daily work environment. This dissertation will examine the moral maturity levels of the survey participants and the impact of age, gender, race, and education. This research study uses the Defining Issues Test (DIT), which is one of the most widely used instruments in the field of moral psychology and is known for its overall reliability and objectivity.

After studying hundreds of Saudi children's books, I decided to keep eighty of them to represent my selection. My main focus in this study is the literary and cultural characteristics of Saudi children's books. Thus, this study is based on two questions: What are the literary characteristics of Saudi children's books? and What are the cultural characteristics of Saudi children's books? I used the content analysis approach to answer both questions. Content analysis means the use of a theory or theme to analyze a text or a series of texts. The theory or theme is used as an analytical device, the main focus being analysis of the text rather than development of theory. In order to answer the question about the literary characteristics of Saudi children's books, I studied the seven most common literary elements found in textbooks of children's literature. A literary analysis chart was developed representing character, plot, setting, theme, point of view, style and tone. After analyzing the selected books literarily, I found that only a small number of the selected books use techniques of the literary elements to attract the readers. The majority of the books represent the false nature of flat characters and are written to instruct and educate children rather than entertain them. Illustrations do not add much to the written text in the majority of books; thus the majority of the books are illustrated books rather than picturebooks. A cultural analysis chart was developed from the readings and the interviews about Saudi culture. Three major categories represent the Saudi culture for this study: religion, family and childhood. After doing the cultural analysis for the selected books I found that there are many misrepresentations of the Saudi culture in most of the books indicating a lack of careful study of the culture. There is a separation between religious and nonreligious books, women have traditional roles in most of the books, and children are portrayed as either ideal or stupid in the majority of the books. Moreover, the landscape and/or the clothes of characters in most of the books are misrepresented.

Inserido nas inverstigações coletivas do Grupo de Estudos em Análise do Discurso de Araraquara (GEADA), o projeto visa a explorar as articulações entre discurso, história e linguagens na construção de posições de sujeito que devem ser assumidas pelos espectadores das grandes mídias e que consequentemente vão gerar grupos de pertencimento em torno de identidades sociais pré-construídas e difundidas por essas mídias. Para tanto, tomamos como corpus o seriado Glee, produzido e transmitido pelo conglomerado midiático Fox Home Entertainment, e partindo dos pressupostos teóricos da Análise do Discurso fundamentada nos trabalhos de Michel Pêcheux e Michel Foucault, buscamos desenvolver uma aventura teórica em que se demonstra como a construção dessas identidades se dá por meio de práticas discursivas que articulam saberes e poderes que subjetivam os indivíduos e os inserem em uma ordem do discurso. Procuramos evidenciar também que na atual configuração tecnológica-midiática, não basta, para desenvolver um estudo desse caráter, concentrar o olhar do pesquisador em uma única plataforma de mídia (como os episódios televisivos, no caso de Glee), mas considerando o caráter de acontecimento discursivo do objeto analisado e o fato de vivermos hoje na era da transmídia, é necessário correr esse olhar pelas diversas plataformas e materiais midiáticos a que esse objeto se estende: livros, filmes, DVDs, reality shows, etc.

KFC and McDonald’s are two representatives of American fast food brands who are operating in China.Considering the cultural differences between American and Chinese culture, whether and how they adaptthemselves to the Chinese culture caught the authors’ attention. This thesis aimed to explore the culturaladaptation patterns of these two brands, and find out what factors contribute to a successful culturaladaptation model from customers’ perspective.In order to find the answer, the authors based this study on academic theories and studies together withobjective information of KFC and McDonald’s, and carried on a survey based on Chinese market. Aftercombining empirical findings and analysis, two models were derived for KFC and McDonald’srespectively. After the analysis, this thesis also discussed implication and limitation of the results, andsuggestion for future study was presented.
