AbstractIllegal wild capture fisheries undermine crustacean (e.g., crabs, lobsters, and swimming crabs) stock and their habitats. In a search for a new approach to the fisheries issues, this paper aims to explain why the illegal fishing for crustacean species still exists in Indonesia. It focuses on analyzing a set of practices in crustacean production and consumption. Banyuwangi (Indonesia) was the case study area of the conducted fieldwork. The method applied semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The design of research enabled the researcher to study daily fishing, purchasing, and processing. These practices determined the exploitation of crustacean species in the sea. This paper shows that the current fishing, purchasing, and processing of crabs, swimming crabs, and lobsters played a vital role in constructing the habit of illegal fishing. When the catch prohibition rules heavily focused on the wild capture fisheries in the sea, the local intermediaries and processors innovated their purchasing and processing to obtain crustacean species incessantly. Such an innovation was in response to the crustacean scarcity problems. (1) In swimming crab mini-plants, processors diversified their processed swimming crab products. The crab product diversification allowed them to process swimming crabs in all sizes. (2) The local intermediaries gave fishermen binding loans. Fishermen paid back the loans by supplying the crustacean species to the loan givers. (3) The existence of processing and purchasing stimulated fishermen to harvest every last crustacean species. Even though such crustacean fishing was illegal, it contributed to the livelihoods of fishermen, local intermediaries, and processors. This paper makes a research contribution to the use of social practice theory in fisheries issues. It gives a novel research approach to the habit of illegal fishing problems.

Mangroves support coastal fisheries, particularly by providing nurseries for juvenile fish. However, much remains unknown about the fish and crustacean communities in mangroves and about the lifecycles and behaviours of individual species. This study is the first to describe the fish and crustacean communities in the Vanga mangrove ecosystem, the largest mangrove forest and the most important marine fisheries landing site in southern Kenya. Using fyke nets, 14 mangrove creek sites were sampled once every 3 months during spring tides, between September 2015 and September 2017. The sampling period covered the north east (NEM) and south east (SEM) monsoon seasons. A total of 1,879 fishes and 1,132 crustaceans were caught, represented by 59 and 16 species, respectively. Over 95 % of the fishes caught were juveniles with 50 % of both fish and crustacean species being of commercial importance. About 70 % of the catch was dominated by only 6 fish species with Yarica hyalosoma and Acropoma japonicum contributing 44 % of the total abundance. Penaeus semisulcatus and Penaeus indicus dominated the crustaceans. Fish abundances differed significantly between seasons, with the SEM catches almost three times higher than those in the NEM, while crustaceans displayed no clear seasonality. The study documents for the first time the fish and crustacean communities in Vanga mangroves and confirms their importance as juvenile habitat for commercial species. The importance of mangrove and near mangrove habitat as nursery habitat for both fish and crustaceans emphasizes the need for conservation particularly of seaward edges

Streszczenie:
Several approaches toward development of stock and recruitment models for exploited crustacean populations are reviewed. Such approaches include modifications of classical stock–recruitment models, or ones more directly related to crustacean biology. The latter are believed to offer the most promise for practical application. Standard yield per recruit models using continuous growth functions have been applied to crustacean stocks, but moult increment – frequency versions of yield per recruit calculations better reflect the discrete growth in crustaceans and changes in growth on maturity. They can be extrapolated easily to calculate fecundity per recruit and assess the impact of exploitation on spawning potential. Simple, semiquantitative approaches, such as life history tables, promote investigation of hypotheses of growth, mortality, maturity/fecundity, and harvesting strategy on management, but like yield per recruit models, cannot easily take into account density-dependent recruitment. We may look forward to the development of models that take into account the nature of crustacean life histories, reflecting the need for cross-scheduling of growth and reproduction in environmentally limiting conditions. Modelling life history processes in biological time units related to moult cycle duration, and cross-converting to real time for consideration of the fisheries component, should offer a notable simplification of the modelling process. The existence of several "choices" for an individual crustacean at different points in the moulting/reproduction cycles makes cohort models cumbersome and seems to require the adoption of a stochastic approach, for instance Markov-related processes, which better take into account complexities of biology and fishery-related processes. For many crustaceans, recruitment is believed to be subject to a "bottleneck" somewhere subsequent to the early larval stages, and identification of the species niche for postlarval stages could be of great practical importance for management and stock enhancement. The concept of the fractal surface as a postlarval and juvenile habitat is suggested as a promising approach, and an expression for natural mortality at size is derived for obligate crevice dwellers on a fractal surface. In relatively few circumstances for Crustacea have density-dependent factors been demonstrated in the field as affecting spawning success and the survival to recruitment of postlarval and juvenile stages. Recruit survival appears to be dominated by environmental conditions that vary significantly; seasonal timing of larval release depending on environmental change from year to year. Short-cutting the investigation of precise impacts of stock density, fishing effort, and environment on recruitment can be achieved using production models, delayed recruitment models, models with autoregressive terms, or production models using mortality rates, where effort definition is difficult and catchability a function of behaviour and environnment. The overriding influence of environment on recruitment success is illustrated for both short- and long-lived species in the tropics and northern latitudes, and this is especially true for high unit value Crustacea resources whose heavily exploited fisheries generally operate at low spawning stock sizes. Fluctuating predator density, or other multispecies interactions, affect recruitment and available number of niches, and modelling of trophic relationships has promise. The range of possible models corresponds to various degrees of refinement of the data base, and the importance of biotic, abiotic, and geographical factors in controlling crustacean recruitment is stressed. Also of fundamental importance are the economics of exploitation of species with a high and elastic demand, which results in high actual and latent levels of effort, fisheries heavily dependent on incoming year-classes, and serious problems in maintaining exploitation rates at reasonable levels.

Abstract Crustacean vitellogenesis is a process that involves Vitellin, produced via endoproteolysis of its precursor, which is designated as Vitellogenin (Vtg). The Vtg gene, mRNA and protein regulation involve several environmental factors and physiological processes, including gonadal maturation and moult stages, among others. Once the Vtg gene, mRNAs and protein are obtained, it is possible to establish the relationship between the elements that participate in their regulation, which could either be species-specific, or tissue-specific. This work is a systematic analysis that compares the similarities and differences of Vtg genes, mRNA and Vtg between the crustacean species reported in databases with respect to that obtained from the transcriptome of Callinectes arcuatus, C. toxotes, Penaeus stylirostris and P. vannamei obtained with MiSeq sequencing technology from Illumina. Those analyses confirm that the Vtg obtained from selected species will serve to understand the process of vitellogenesis in crustaceans that is important for fisheries and aquaculture.

The reproductive performance of commercially important crustaceans may be considerably affected by symbiotic nemertean egg predators and parasitic castrators. Because these parasites commonly affect only females or feminize males, they may be protected by management practices that protect females. To manage a parasitized stock, we suggest that strategies should vary depending on the recruitment dynamics of both host and parasite. For a certain spatial scale, recruitment to a population may be "open" or "closed" depending on the behavior of planktonic larvae, the duration of these planktonic stages, and the flush rate of the environment of the adult host. Both hosts and parasites may have open or closed larval recruitment. We developed mathematical models to investigate the impact of protection of females on a hypothetical fishery for different combinations of host and parasite recruitment dynamics. The models suggest that the common practice of releasing females is not advantageous when a fishery is affected by a parasite. Retaining females in the catch is preferable in most cases. Treating or culling infected females may be advisable when host recruitment is closed.

Streszczenie:
The fundamental biological issue for fisheries management is undoubtedly the prevention of recruitment overfishing, i.e. to prevent the spawning stock from being depleted by fishing to a level where it significantly reduces the abundance of recruits. However, for many important fisheries, particularly crustacean fisheries, the stock-recruitment relationship (SRR) is not known. In many cases, research on recruitment has concentrated on short-term studies of recruitment processes to the exclusion of research into the SRR which requires development of long term databases. This paper examines techniques required to model the SRR, using case studies from Western Australian crustacean fisheries. Outlines of potential problems such as errors and biases in the measurement of stock and recruitment indices, the time series nature of the data, and lack of stationarity in the data, are given with possible solutions. Environmental effects, which can greatly influence the abundance of recruits, may need to be determined before the underlying SRR can be seen. Some of the advantages and possible disadvantages of incorporating environmental variables in the SRR are examined. A thorough assessment of SRRs also involves a study of the impact of fishing on the stock and the effect of stochastic variation using simulations. The evaluation of the SRR requires a multi-disciplinary approach which includes the fields of biology, environment, economics, population dynamics and statistics.

The present study provides an account of an experimental survey aiming at the evaluation of the catchability of the striped soldier shrimp, Plesionika edwardsii, using semi-floating shrimp traps off the Algarve coast (southern Portugal). Currently, this species is not targeted by the crustacean bottom trawl fleet, and preliminary results on product value suggest that this may become an economically viable new fishery. Preliminary results suggest that this fishery could contribute to the diversification of fixed gears of low environmental impact targeting deep-water crustaceans, in agreement with the objectives of both the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the reformed Common Fisheries Policy. However, potential spatial conflicts with trawling, the unknown size of the resource and a necessary precautionary approach may limit the number of licences that can be granted.

New information on the marine parasitic crustaceans from the Campeche coast, Gulf of Mexico (GoM), can improve our baseline knowledge of the ecology of both the host and parasite by providing, for example, parameters of infection. Such knowledge is especially important for fish farming, so that appropriate quarantine measures can be established. Our aim was to morphologically identify the parasitic crustaceans infecting puffer fish of commercial importance in the coastal zone of Campeche, Mexico. We provide new information on four known species of parasitic crustaceans from 92 specimens representing five species of tetraodontid fish. The parasitic crustaceans Argulus sp. (Branchiura, Argulidae), Caligus haemulonis (Caligidae), Pseudochondracanthus diceraus (Chondracanthidae), and Taeniacanthus lagocephali (Taeniacanthidae) (all Copepoda) were found on Lagocephalus laevigatus, Sphoeroides nephelus, S. parvus, S. spengleri, and S. testudineus. This study revealed the occurrence of P. diceraus, which is of importance in aquaculture, on Sphoeroides annulatus in the Mexican Pacific. Additionally, our results and other documentary records provide the first evidence of the interoceanic occurrence of the same parasitic crustacean species in the south-southwest of Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, our study provides valuable information on the biodiversity of parasitic crustaceans present in the GoM on puffer fish which are of great commercial importance for human consumption, fisheries, and aquaculture.

The deep-water rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846) is one of the Decapod crustacean species that is targeted by coastal and deep-sea demersal fisheries in the western Mediterranean, in the Algerian west coast in particular. Despite its socio-economic importance and commercial interest across the country, there were only few studies focusing on its biology and ecology and no species development plan has been drawn up for now. Our study of the rose shrimp diet was based on the analysis of the faunistic composition of the ingested prey. Seasonal sampling was carried out at Beni Saf port (western Algeria) during 2018-2019, from landings from inshore trawling fisheries. A total of 641 individuals were analyzed, while taking account of males and females and size classes. Results of stomach content analyzes showed a wide range of benthic and endobenthic species. Crustacea are the preferred prey (F=77.69%), followed by Foraminifera, Annelida Polychaeta, and Mollusca with respective frequencies of (77.22%, 58.50% and 52.73%). Radiolaria, Porifera and Echinodermata represent a less important part in the diet of this species and constitute accidental prey, whose frequency is less than 10%. Benthic organisms with silt ingest the plant and various debris, which are the secondary prey with an average frequency of 14.81%.

Decapod crustacean fisheries play a crucial role on the northwestern Mediterranean coast due to their high commercial value. Although knowledge of larval ecology and recruitment dynamics of these species is essential to establish a sustainable fisheries management, they are still poorly known. In this paper, we describe the composition, abundance and distribution of decapod crustacean larvae in the submarine canyon off Blanes (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) during summer thermal stratification conditions. Samples were collected in September 2011 with a multi-net system and a 60-cm bongo net at 22 stations with bottom depths of between 100 and 1800 m. A total of 635 larvae from 60 genera were identified. The most relevant taxa were Aristeus antennatus (7.93 individuals/1000 m3), the family Sergestidae (7.24) and Alpheus glaber (6.78). These three taxa were dominant ( > 20% of total decapod larvae) at more than half of the stations. Decapod larval communities were found to be richer and more diverse at the canyon head, a finding which could be explained by the higher retention rates when compared with the upstream and downstream walls and the canyon axis.

This study comprises and compares epibenthic samples of the marine crustacean decapod megafauna, taken with a beam trawl at numerous stations in the German Exclusive Economic Zone of the North Sea in the years 1987, 1990, 2007 and 2013. All decapod crustacean species were recorded quantitatively. An overview of the decapod faunal composition with respect to changes in space, species and abundance with time is given. A time-dependent decrease of rare and often northern species at the research area is obvious, as a result of an increase of some dominant species concentrating in coastal areas. In 2013, a more uniform species composition seems to have developed. Decapod species and abundance depletions may be influenced by many factors, among them also climate change and fisheries.

FLEXSELECT is a simple counter-herding device that aims at reducing the bycatch of fish by scaring them away from the trawl path without affecting the catches of the target species. FLEXSELECT was tested in the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) directed trawl fishery, as this includes bycatch of both roundfish and flatfish. Length-based data were collected for Nephrops, four roundfish species (cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus), and hake (Merluccius merluccius)), and two flatfish species (plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and lemon sole (Microstomus kitt)), and length-based catch comparisons were performed. No significant effect on the target species, Nephrops, was detected, whereas a reduction of 39% (CI: 29%–46%) was obtained for the overall number of fish. Catches of all the six fish species examined were significantly reduced by FLEXSELECT, with the efficiency varying considerably among species and over length classes. No significant diel differences were found for either roundfish or flatfish species. FLEXSELECT prevents bycatch species from interacting with the trawl, thus most likely enhancing their survival and fitness. Moreover, its fast attachment system makes FLEXSELECT a flexible tool, adaptable to different fisheries and catch goals.

Recent studies in the Colombian Caribbean Sea describe the potential for a new deep-sea crustacean fishery between 200 a 550-m depth. In order to support appropriate management plans for their sustainable utilization, the goal of the present study was to identify the catch composition and to detect general trends in the bathymetric distribution of the main four biological categories (crustaceans, teleostean, chondrichthyes and molluscs), in relation to depth strata. A total catch per unit area of 8,759 ind. km-2 and 226 kg km-2 was reported and the major contribution was supported by teleostean fish (89 species; 62% abundance and 73% of total biomass), dominating the depth stratum 200-300 m, followed by crustaceans (36% and 22%, respectively) for deeper waters (> 500 m). Most important species were the fish Coelorinchus caelorhincus (20.2 ind. km-2; 16.7 kg km-2) and the crustaceans Penaeopsis serrata (579 ind. km-2, 7% of the total abundance) and Pleoticus robustus (12.6 kg km-2, 6% of the total biomass). The information obtained is part of a base line required to describing the potential effects of deep-sea fisheries on the ecosystem and supporting future decisions about use, management and conservation of deep resources for this region.

In the context of applying the precautionary approach to fisheries management, much of the current attention on developing reference points has been focussed on finfish species. However, at present the largest marine fisheries in Canada in terms of landings and value are those for invertebrate species. A workshop on reference points for invertebrate fisheries was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from 2 to 5 December 2002 to address the particular needs of fisheries on this diverse group of species. Seven of the papers presented at that workshop were published as a group in this issue of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Science. Reproduction and recruitment were identified by all of these papers as key elements of population resilience and productivity that needed to be monitored in some way. The monitoring of reproductive capacity should be extended to aspects important in the mating systems, such as local densities, spatial patterns of age–size structure, and spatial and temporal patterns of breeding areas for broadcast spawners with poorly mobile or sessile adults. Similarly, such monitoring would also include female and male size and the number of female reproductive opportunities for crustacean species with copulating adults.

Decapod crustaceans are a diverse group englobing several species of commercial and ecological interest. In the Mediterranean Sea, decapod crustacean fisheries are among the most profitable, although in many cases their early life stages are poorly known. In this study, we tackle the composition and diversity patterns of the decapod larval communities along the eastern Spanish Mediterranean coast. Zooplankton sampling was carried out in surface waters at 101 stations from July 20th to August 31st 2016, over bottom depths between 90 and 1840 m. All shrimp larvae were identified to the lowest possible taxonomical level, and larvae from Anomura, Achelata and Brachyura were left at infraorder level. No larvae of Astacidea or Polychelida were found. The total zooplankton volume was estimated. A total of 20,022 decapod crustacean larvae were identified, focusing on shrimp taxa (suborder Dendrobranchiata and infraorder Caridea). Both zooplankton volume and decapod larval density values were higher in the northern part of the studied area, cut by deep submarine canyons. After assessing the diversity parameters of the decapod larval community, we present the summer mesoscale larval distribution of several species of commercial interest such as the caramote prawn (Penaeus kerathurus) or the deep-water rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris). The northern submarine canyons are dominated by the presence of Penaeoidea, being the deep-sea shrimp Aristeus antennatus the dominant species in the community in this area, while the Sergestoidea are more abundant in the southern zone. This is the largest-scale study on decapod larvae mesoscale distribution in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract Sustainability of fisheries extends beyond environmental aspects. Broad information is today sought for decision-making and by many stakeholders. Here, a framework recently developed to comprehensively report on sustainability issues relevant to fisheries, the Australian Fisheries Healthcheck, was used to compare five crustacean trawl fisheries from Australia and Europe. Indicators covered 51 different aspects of sustainability in 24 sub-categories related to ecological, economic, social and ethical, governance, and external (e.g. climate, contaminants) dimensions. We found that data availability did not vary greatly between fisheries, but the indicator outcomes did. Furthermore, while environmental sustainability has received most attention in assessments to date, the associated indicators had the least publicly available data. Another finding was that eco-certification and high performance on several governance indicators did not necessarily equate to sustainability. For future international comparisons, challenges include identifying comparable and cost-effective metrics for indicators derived from different data collection strategies. Commencing holistic reporting on broader sustainability is important since the data provided (i) are sought by stakeholders; (ii) enable improved availability of empirical data for research on the effectiveness of different governance modes; (iii) can illustrate trade-offs between different dimensions of sustainability, and (iv) build trust in the fishery system as producers of sustainable food.

Detailed information on the growth and survival of small, juvenile crustaceans during the earliest part of their benthic life is rare. Tagging crustaceans is difficult; external tags can be lost during moulting, negatively effect growth, and owing to their size can only be used in larger (>50 mm carapace length) (sub)adult individuals. To evaluate the suitability of small internal, coded micro wire tags (<1 mm) to mark marron, Cherax tenuimanus, a laboratory trial was conducted to compare growth and survival of juvenile (<20 mm orbital-carapace length) marked and unmarked marron. After 394 days no significant differences in growth or survival were observed between tagged and control groups. Mortality was high (~80%) but similar between both treatments. Tag loss, ~12% between Day 1 and Day 54, appeared to be confined to the first post-tag moult. No further tag loss was observed during the remaining 340 days of the experiment. Mark–recapture programs could provide the first detailed estimates of growth and survival of C. tenuimanus under natural conditions, enhancing the sustainable management of the declining recreational marron fishery. The present study illustrates the potential usefulness of coded micro wire tags as a tool in crustacean biology and fisheries management.

Abstract For EU member states to meet the requirements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the reformed Common Fisheries Policy, it will be necessary to improve data collection related to many fisheries that are at present subject to relatively little monitoring or scientific research. This study evaluated the use of on-board camera systems to collect data from Cancer pagurus and Homarus gammarus fisheries. We evaluated the reliability of the hardware and its ability to collect images of sufficient accuracy and precision compared with using on-board observers. Fishers and on-board observers passed animals removed from traps across a defined area. The relationship between the in situ and predicted measurements of carapace length of lobsters or carapace width (CW) of crabs was investigated. The mean difference between the predicted and real crab measurements was −0.853 mm with a standard error of 0.378 mm. Suggesting that the model tends to underestimate the real CW slightly. The mean difference between predicted and real data for lobsters was 0.085 mm with a standard error of 0.208 mm. Sex allocation for crabs based on video images was 100% accurate. All male lobsters were correctly assigned. For lobsters >86 mm in length, the correct female sex allocation was 100% accurate. For smaller lobsters, the accuracy of sex allocation decreased to a low of 51% in lobsters <70 mm. Camera systems were found to be a suitable method for collecting data on the size and sex of crabs and lobsters. The error attributable to using video data rather than manual measurement was less than 3 mm, which is sufficient to detect growth increments in these species. The requirements to collect basic species data are increasing and the ability to do so without on-board observers will reduce the cost implications of these requirements. Future computer automation of image extraction and measurements will increase the application of video systems for data collection.

Abstract Punt, A. E., Huang, T., and Maunder, M. N. 2013. Review of integrated size-structured models for stock assessment of hard-to-age crustacean and mollusc species. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70:16–33. Crustaceans and molluscs such as crabs, rock lobsters, prawns, abalone, and oysters constitute large and valuable fisheries. However, assessments of these species are hampered because they cannot be production aged, in contrast to many teleosts. The major data sources for these species, in addition to catch and abundance index data, are the size compositions of the catches and of any fishery-independent indices. Assessments of such species have been conducted using age-based methods of stock assessment, as well as surplus production models. However, size-structured methods are now preferred because they can make full use of size-composition data, are able to integrate multiple sources of data, and produce the types of outputs which are needed for management purposes. An advantage of size-based models over age-based models is that all processes can be size-based, and these processes can modify the (unmodelled) size-at-age distribution. We review these methods, highlighting the choices that need to be made when developing integrated size-structured stock assessments, the data sources which are typically available and how they are used for parameter estimation, and contrast a number of such assessments worldwide.

A study on the catch composition and diversity of cast net fisheries was conducted between May and August, 2017 in the New Calabar River, Rivers state, using cast net of varying mesh sizes (1.5mm and 2.5mm). Fish samples were collected from three sampling stations, viz. Station1- Aluu, Station 2- Choba and Station 3- Iwofe. The fish species recorded comprised of 26 species under 11 families, and one decapod crustacean. The three most abundant species were; Coptodon guineensis (25.11%), Coptodon zilli (18.56%) both from the Cichlidae family, and Penaeus nitialis (10.90%) from the Penaeidae family, while the least abundant species was Liza grandisquamis (0.13%) from the Mugilidae family. The diversity indices showed that station 2 recorded the highest number of species (21) while station 1 recorded the lowest with (12) species. Simpson’s indexes of diversity, Simpson’s reciprocal index, Shannon- weiner index, and Pielou’s evenness index, were estimated. This study serves as a base line data which will assist relevant bodies in the management and conservation of fisheries resources in the New Calabar River. It is therefore recommended that for an improved and sustainable exploitation and management of fisheries resources of the New Calabar River, proper monitoring and management for fish stock must be done.J. Abstract Fish hydrolysate contains hydrolyzed protein which comprised of peptides and free amino acids that are easily digested and absorbed by fish. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of fish hydrolysate in improving feed efficiency and growth of coral trout. Five experimental diets were formulated to contain 47% protein and 12% lipid with different sources and levels of fish hydrolysate. Diet-1 and diet-2 were added with crustacean hydrolysate at 2% and 4% levels, respectively. Whereas diet-3 and diet-4 were supplemented with 2% and 4% of tuna hydrolysate. Diet-5 was formulated without fish hydrolysate supplementation (control). The diets were prepared as dry pellet with 3 mm diameter. Coral trout juveniles were produced in the hatchery of Institute for Mariculture Research and Fisheries Extension (IMRAFE), Gondol-Bali with the average body weight of 7.6 ± 0.9 g. The juveniles were maintained in 15 fiber tanks, 400L in volume, with a density of 40 fish/tank. The experiment was designed with a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments (different diets) and 3 replications for each treatment. The fish were fed the experimantal diets three times every day at satiation level for 84 days of feeding experiment. Results of the experiment showed that increased supplementation of fish hydrolysate from 2% to 4% in diet tended to improve fish growth performance. However, the best growth performance, in term of weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR), was obtained in fish fed diet supplemented with 4% crustacean hydrolysate. This growth performance was significantly higher than of the other treatments (P<0.05). The best feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were also obtained in fish fed diet supplemented with 4% crustacean hydrolysate. The results of the present study showed that supplementation of 4% crustacean hydrolysate in diet effectively improved the growth and feed efficiency of coral trout.

Estuarine waters are heavily influenced by catchment land use and run-off, and acid sulfate soils directly affect both dissolved oxygen (DO) and aluminium concentrations. This can affect harvested species (including benthic crustaceans) and can have concomitant effects on their productivity. In this study we evaluated the effects of hypoxia (DO concentrations <2mgL–1) on eastern school prawn (Metapenaeus macleayi) under enhanced and ambient aluminium concentrations (mean±s.d., 0.112±0.009 and 0.015±0.002mgL–1 respectively). There was a significant increase in survival with increasing DO and LC50 was ~0.9mgL–1, although survival decreased at higher DO concentrations in the presence of enhanced aluminium concentrations. Total fatty acid and amino acid concentrations were significantly greater in prawns subjected to hypoxia, regardless of aluminium exposure. Docosahexaenoic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid and behenic acid (fatty acids) and leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine and asparagine (amino acids) contributed to differences in fatty and amino acid profiles among treatments. Hypoxia and aluminium concentrations in nursery habitats of south-eastern Australian estuaries can exceed the conditions evaluated, and could thus affect survival of M. macleayi. More generally, these results have implications for other crustacean species in estuaries that drain coastal flood plains, and the fisheries that rely on them.

Abstract Primary crustacean cell culture was introduced in the 1960s, but to date limited cell lines have been established. Skogsbergia lerneri is a myodocopid ostracod, which has a body enclosed within a thin, durable, transparent bivalved carapace, through which the eye can see. The epidermal layer lines the inner surface of the carapace and is responsible for carapace synthesis. The purpose of the present study was to develop an in vitro epidermal tissue and cell culture method for S. lerneri. First, an optimal environment for the viability of this epidermal tissue was ascertained, while maintaining its cell proliferative capacity. Next, a microdissection technique to remove the epidermal layer for explant culture was established and finally, a cell dissociation method for epidermal cell culture was determined. Maintenance of sterility, cell viability and proliferation were key throughout these processes. This novel approach for viable S. lerneri epidermal tissue and cell culture augments our understanding of crustacean cell biology and the complex biosynthesis of the ostracod carapace. In addition, these techniques have great potential in the fields of biomaterial manufacture, the military and fisheries, for example, in vitro toxicity testing.

Baited trap or pot fisheries are considered to have relatively few wider ecosystem effects on the marine environment, particularly when compared with towed mobile fishing gear. However, this assumption is rarely tested in the field. This study aimed to determine the composition of non-target species that occur in crustacean pots and to assess spatial and temporal differences in catches in the waters around the Isle of Man, Irish Sea. The data were collected using fishery independent surveys and a questionnaire study. Based on fishery independent surveys, a total of five taxonomic groups and 43 species occurred as by-catch. The dominant by-catch species was velvet crab Necora puber. The by-catch per unit effort (BPUE) for all of the non-target species was low particularly in comparison to towed bottom gear fisheries around the Isle of Man. BPUE of species composition varied considerably between different locations around the Isle of Man. The results of both the fishery independent and questionnaire data suggested that the by-catch rates varied with season with peak BPUE occurring in spring which then declined into autumn and winter. By-catch composition did not decrease significantly with an increasing target species catch. Overall, by-catch was low relative to target species catch which may be partially attributable to the use of escape panels in pot fisheries in the Isle of Man.

An Australia-wide assessment of ~1000 estuaries and embayments undertaken by the National Land and Water Resources Audit of 1997–2002 indicated that ~30% were modified to some degree. The most highly degraded were in New South Wales, where ~40% were classified as ‘extensively modified’ and <10% were ‘near pristine’. Since that review, urban populations have continued to grow rapidly, and increasing pressures for industrial and agricultural development in the coastal zone have resulted in ongoing degradation of Australia's estuaries and embayments. This degradation has had serious effects on biodiversity, and commercial and recreational fishing. A business case is developed that shows that an Australia-wide investment of AU$350 million into repair will be returned in less than 5 years. This return is merely from improved productivity of commercial fisheries of a limited number of fish, shellfish and crustacean species. Estuary repair represents an outstanding return on investment, possibly far greater than most of Australia's previous environmental repair initiatives and with clearly demonstrated outcomes across the Australian food and services economies.

Abstract The coastal regency of Aceh Jaya has great potential resources in marine and fisheries, agriculture-plantation-animal farming, forestry, minerals-mining, tourism, processing industry, and renewable energy. However, significant challenges arise regarding selecting these potentials with the principle of sustainability: encouraging economic development, being accountable and socially accepted, and having an ecological perspective as a short to medium plan to accelerate economic growth. This study has identified the leading sectors with the most potential resources for the basis of development priority of Aceh Jaya nearly two decades after the 2004’s tsunami. The research was conducted in nine districts in Aceh Jaya Regency. Data is processed through Market Analysis, Gap Analysis, Stakeholder and Institutional Analysis, and Sectoral Analysis. These analyses identified eight sectors with each superior product for the development acceleration of Aceh Jaya. Those sectors and the products are agriculture (rice), capture fisheries (tuna, skipjack, mackerel tuna, and crustacean), aquaculture (giant-tiger prawn, tilapia, and lobster), animal farming (cattle, buffalo, goat, duck), forestry (agarwood, dragonblood, and rattan), tourism (Geureutee, Reusam Island), mineral (coal), industry (prawn cracker, shredded catfish, soybean, patchouli oil, and biogas).

The penaeid shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri is the second most important species of crustacean in Brazilian fisheries. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen are chemical proxies to provide quantitative information about the consumer isotopic niche, which is associated with its feeding ecology and ecological niche in the environment. This study evaluated the niche dimensions of X. kroyeri from different stocks through stable isotopes determinations. Shrimps were sampled in four fishing areas from southeastern Brazil (Vitória and Anchieta, in Espírito Santo State, and Atafona and Farol de São Tomé, in Rio de Janeiro State). The stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were determined in the abdominal muscle. Quantitative metrics of the isotopic niche estimated the trophic diversity and trophic redundancy among stocks. Shrimp stocks from Espírito Santo State had highest trophic diversity, indicating greater variety of food sources and wider utilization of the available food sources. The shrimps from Rio de Janeiro State had highest trophic redundancy, revealing a more homogeneous dietary pattern. The isotopic niche approach allowed the discrimination of X. kroyeri stocks distributed in southeastern Brazil, and the results will be helpful to assist fisheries management.

Streszczenie:
Fisheries biologists have greatly altered the natural distribution of the crustacean Mysis relicta by introducing it into many lakes in both North America and Scandinavia to serve as a supplementary food source for fish. The original concept of Mysis as a deepwater benthic organism which remains isolated in the profundal zone of lakes needs to be modified to include its downstream dispersal capabilities. After introduction to a lake, Mysis will probably eventually reach all lakes in the downstream watershed. Recent studies indicate that rates of increase of introduced Mysis populations probably depend on available food and temperature. As well, introduced populations have been shown to modify benthic, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish communities. Most Mysis introductions have taken place without consideration of general criteria suggested for introduced species.

Abstract Favaro, B., Duff, S. D., and Côté, I. M. 2013. A trap with a twist: evaluating a bycatch reduction device to prevent rockfish capture in crustacean traps. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70:114–122. Bycatch, or the incidental capture of non-target species, occurs in fisheries around the world, with often detrimental ecological consequences. Bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) that increase catch specificity have been used successfully in some fisheries, and the development of such devices remains an important component of the global effort to reduce bycatch rates. We tested novel devices designed to exclude juvenile rockfish (Sebastes spp.) from traps used to catch spot prawns (Pandalus platyceros), a commercially important species in British Columbia, Canada. The devices included reductions in trap opening sizes and novel bent-tunnel openings. Reducing trap opening size did not affect bycatch rates of rockfish or other non-target fish species. In contrast, bent-tunnel BRDs eliminated rockfish bycatch, and two of the bent-tunnel variants also excluded other fish species. However, prawn catch rates were reduced in all modified gear, and large prawns were often excluded more than small prawns. Videos recorded in situ revealed that prawn attempts to enter traps took longer and were more likely to fail in BRD-equipped than in unmodified traps. We conclude that bent-tunnel BRDs have the potential to be useful, but improvements are needed to increase prawn catch to levels similar to that of unmodified traps.

Streszczenie:
Aim: The fisheries resources of Mandovi Estuary, along the central west coast of India were analysed for taxonomic, functional, feeding and population aspects and also to record and prepare an inventory on fish and shellfish species. Methodology: Finfish and shellfish taxa were monitored for four years (2016 to 2020) through surveys in small and regional markets, fishermen surveys, fishing gear samplings, telephonic interviews and photographs. Results: A total of 318 taxa are counted comprising of 169 (53.1%) demersal, 71 (22.3%) pelagic fish, 37 (11.6%), molluscan and 41 (12.9%) crustacean species. The community was dominated by marine immigrants and the freshwater types contributed least to the composition. In the inventory, majority of the resources were of commercial value and this category contributed 70% of total documented species. Even though detailed analyses were required, nearly 2% of the fauna appeared to be endemic to the region. Further, more than 30% species listed were data deficient. Out of 318 species, 10% were unknown in the Mandovi estuary. Interpretation: This data set comprehensively documents the finfish and shellfish diversity of Mandovi estuary from 2016 to 2020. The type of fish assemblage is briefly discussed focusing on the management of these resources in the estuary.
